El Salvador After recurring floods and other natural disaster have struck El Salvador, many lives have been lost and communities are attempting to re-build their livelihoods year after year. There is an urgent need to review processes to date and propose innovative, low-cost solution for communities who are at risk. With funding from USAID, Save the Children introduced “Building resilient communities through increased knowledge, practices and coordination in disaster risk preparedness, mitigation and improved health practices” in partnership with two local NGOs, FUSALPRODESE and FUSALMO. Save the Children provided communities and local governments with the information and resources that allowed them to mitigate the negative impact of future disasters by ensuring locally-voiced solutions were incorporated into municipal and national plans and their implementation. Save the Children and its partners integrated health information and interventions into disaster risk reduction activities with a special focus on the most vulnerable groups that are often overlooked in both preparation and in response to emergencies.
