Save the Children’s Presence in Occupied Palestinian Territories Above: The Occupied Palestinian Territory (OPT) has experienced more than 60 years of conflict, which has created the world’s largest refugee population. Approximately 42% of Palestinian children in the OPT are refugees and poverty, conflict, violence and fear are a daily reality for many of them. In 2009 Save the Children contributed to the development of an Emergency Preparedness Plan (EPP) and Mechanism in collaboration with other relevant humanitarian actors. With approximately $200,000 USD from Italian Cooperation Office, over 4,000 children and over 9,000 community members directly benefited from our DRR program.

Preparedness At least 8,000 children and their families living in areas of armed conflict in Khoza’a and Qarara received an EPP and Mechanism by working in collaboration with other relevant humanitarian actors. We establish Sub-Committees for Emergencies within the Local Committees. This plan was developed through consultations with members of communities at risk and international and local organizations such as ICRC, PRCS, MSF, Medical Relief, UNICEF and UNRWA. The EPP information was distributed by local committees in the communities of Khoza’a and Qarara. The brochures on the plan described activities and persons of reference. Meetings with families living in areas most at risk were organised during which the contents and meaning of the plan were explained.

Child Protection & DRR A mechanism for child protection in disasters in Khoza’a and Qarara was created in order for prevention and intervention services for children most at risk. Children and adults and 10 civil society organizations in Khoza’a and Qarara have gained better knowledge and understanding of issues relating to DRR, human rights and child protection.

Health & DRR Children in Khoza’a and Qarara that were victims of violence, exploitation, abandonment or abuse have received psychological, health and/or legal support through a robust one referral system in times of disaster.
