COLOMBIA Save the Children works in the most marginalized and remote areas of Colombia. We develop innovative, effective and scalable models that allow children and adolescents to survive, learn and be protected from any risk or threat.Taking on important challenges, we reach the most excluded children who are affected by armed conflict, poverty, disasters and other forms of violence.

AREAS OF INTERVENTION

OUR WORK Education: we work to guarantee the right to an inclusive and quality education, especially for the most excluded children affected by armed conflict. We do this by implementing strategies to improve teaching in the classroom, and to integrate gender equity and ethno-educational approaches in the schools. We work with the Secretariats of Education to ensure that strategies are sustainable and replicable. Child Poverty: we generate social and economic opportunities to achieve lasting transformations for a life free of poverty. We promote sustainable livelihoods to ensure socio-economic stability for the most vulnerable families, thus improving their quality of life through income generation. We also seek to build children, adolescents, and youths´ capacities to help their successful transition to work life. Protection: our actions focus on comprehensive protection for children and adolescents. We work to prevent physical and psychological damage caused by violence, neglect and abuse. In communities affected by disasters and armed conflict, we implement strategies for integrated risk management and create safe and protective environments in educational institutions and the community to prevent and mitigate the consequences of conflict. We also implement pedagogical and communication strategies to mobilize communities and strengthen their understanding and integral management of risks. Health and nutrition: we work to improve the health of vulnerable children and adolescents by promoting practices and habits in hygiene, water, basic sanitation and nutrition in schools. Among families and communities, we promote healthy lifestyles that contribute to improving adults and children’s quality of life and well-being. Child Rights Governance: we work with national and local governments to ensure compliance with the Convention on the Rights of the Child and to ensure public investment for children and adolescents. We also work to strengthen the capacities of policy makers on accountability for children and adolescents´ rights. We also support networks and civil-society groups and promote their participation in policy processes concerning children.

OUR DONORS SUCCESS STORY

Katherin and Julián, participants in our project “Improvement of infrastructure for drinking water and sanitation” in Bolívar, Cauca.

I used to drink untreated water because I knew less about the consequences. Now I drink boiled or filtered water; I am more aware (…) It was fun to socialize in an environment outside of school, where we learned how to improve our quality of life and had fun.
