SUCCESS STORY

Melanie Mero, 13. Community Friendly Space Promoter in Montecristi - Manabí

I didn’t know whether to be a promoter or not. I decided to do it because I like children, I like to work with them, teach them and I like the Friendly Space. I see that there are many girls and boys here and they have nothing to do at home. They like to be here. I’m happy, I like what I do.

OUR FUNDING NEEDS

RECOVERING OPPORTUNITIES FOR THE MOST VULNERABLE PEOPLE IN MANABÍ FOR A DIGNIFIED LIFE AFTER THE ECUADOR EARTHQUAKE

THE RIGHT TO LIVE A LIFE FREE OF VIOLENCE FOR WOMEN, GIRLS AND ADOLESCENTS IN VULNERABLE SITUATIONS IN THE NORTHERN BORDER AREAS

?

JUSTIFICATION

?

The areas around the northern border, traditionally a migration zone, see high rates of human trafficking and 48% rate of gender-based violence. The main victims are women and girls. These women, children and adolescents do not have access to the protection system or justice.

GOAL To improve protection and access to justice for women and girls in situations of violence.

IMPACT 550 women, girls and adolescents

JUSTIFICATION Due to the earthquake, the livelihoods and income sources for families have been greatly affected. 30% of local industries have suffered and the unemployment rate has climbed to 56%, 68% among women. 40% of women in Manabí do not receive income. Many of them are single women with children (25%) and, because of the earthquake, they lost their homes and jobs. Combined with pre-existing vulnerability in the area, the displacement, social breakdown, as well as the loss and/or the collapse of community networks following the earthquake, have led to increased risks for children, adolescents and women.

2,800 men, adolescents and boys
