GUATEMALA Save the Children, in partnership with local actors, implements programs that benefit the most deprived indigenous households to ensure the fulfillment of children’s rights. Our programs focus on improving education, health & nutrition, child protection and child poverty, as well as support families to improve their resilience.

AREAS OF INTERVENTION

OUR WORK Education: we work with national stakeholders to increase investment in education, especially bilingual education.We work to improve access to quality bilingual education in over 400 rural schools in the Western Highlands of Guatemala. Where, with partners, we train teachers, parents and school directors to ensure high quality basic education services for children.The main focus of our education program is to improve learning, especially through strengthening literacy, and promoting the development of life skills through an active, inclusive, bilingual and participatory methodology.

Child Protection: we are working to ensure children have appropriate care in community-based settings, are protected from physical and humiliating punishment in school and at home. We strengthen child protection systems for children living in violent and exploitative environments.We work to ensure the protection of children with disabilities, migrant children and victims of trafficking, exploitation and violence. Child Rights Governance: we work in coordination with national and local governments to improve accountability for compliance with Children’s Rights.We also encourage the participation of children and adolescents in the development of new policies and laws, to guarantee the compliance of the institutions responsible for the fulfillment of their rights by monitoring and demanding child rights and advocating to increase public investment for children and adolescents.

2016 OUTREACH

Child Poverty: we work with poor, rural families in the Western Highlands implementing an economic growth model which helps local farmers to improve the quantity and quality of crops so as to provide more nutritious foods for their family, as well as increase their income to reach markets, 4,555,556 people. 2,268,056 children and 1,391,533 adults create association of producers, increase access to credit, promotion of sustainable agricultural production practices, improved animal husbandry techniques, and management of natural resources. Programmatic areas: Health and Nutrition: we aim to improve the nutritional status of pregnant and lactating women and children under 2 years of age in rural settings.We focus on improving rural household consumption of nutritious food and providing means for households to produce food, change behaviors and adopt better, improved health and diet practices.

Risk Management and Emergency Response: one of our priorities is to protect children against any form of abuse. Guatemala is vulnerable to natural disasters and climate change, so we conduct trainings in risk management and natural disaster response at local level where we elaborate prevention plans and encourage their implementation ensuring the inclusion of protection principles.

CHILD SENSITIVE AGRICULTURE

GOAL GOAL To increase agricultural incomes for small farmers and their families in the Western Highlands, while improving nutrition outcomes for children rising agricultural productivity, diversifying income generation alternatives, expanding access to markets, and increasing production and nutrition through climate-smart agriculture practices.

To prevent unnecessary family separation in adolescents ages 15 to 24, especially poor and indigenous adolescents in the Western Highlands, by responding to their social and economic aspirations providing them with market-based employment skills and self-employment opportunities they need to make the most of their potential and increase their income generation.

PSYCHOSOCIAL CARE DURING CRISIS

GOAL

GOAL To prevent the migration of unaccompanied children and adolescents and to prevent the violation of their rights during the migration process by protecting and promoting their rights.

IMPACT 125 civil-society leaders 125 representatives from institutions offering protection and social services 575,497 beneficiaries reached through a campaign to raise awareness about the risks associated to the migration developed in Guatemala City and 4 departments.
