GUATEMALA At Save the Children in Guatemala, together with local allies, we implement programs which benefit the most excluded indigenous families to ensure the fulfillment of child rights. Our programmes focus on improving education, health and nutrition, child protection and child poverty, as well as resilience of families.

AREAS OF INTERVENTION

OUR WORK Education: we implement advocacy actions to increase investment into Intercultural Bilingual Education and work with national allies to train teachers in the use of such educational models.The main focus of our education program is to improve literacy skills of children in 6 departments of Guatemala; currently in 383 schools.We also invest in healthy school education to improve school performance of children. Protection: we participate in coalitions with civil society to modify and improve legislation on child protection.We are working to ensure that children receive appropriate care in all their community spaces, i.e. to protect them from physical and humiliating punishment at school and at home.We work with adolescents, parents, teachers and local authorities to build a culture of peace in schools and expand opportunities for youth. Child Rights Governance: we cooperate with national and local governments to strengthen accountability regarding child rights.We promote the participation of children and adolescents in the development of new policies and laws to guarantee that institutions comply with child rights.We do so through monitoring, demanding child rights and advocacy to increase public investment for children and adolescents.

Child Poverty: we work with the poorest and most rural families on the occidental plateau, implementing a model for economic growth which helps farmers to improve the quantity and cuality of their crops, which allow them to improve the diet of their families while also increasing their income.We also support the creation of producers’ associations, access to credit, sustainable production practices, livestock techniques and natural resource management.

Health and Nutrition: we aim to improve the nutrition of pregnant and breastfeeding women, and children under the age of 5 in rural areas.We promote the consumption of nutritive foods in rural homes and provide homes with inputs to produce their own food, change behaviors and adopt better food practices. We strive to improve the quality of health services by strengthening the capacities of health personnel in both clinical care and management, particularly regarding neonatal and infant care.

Ana, 18, joined Save the Children’s delegation to the UN to present the Alternative Report on the Rights of the Child.

My job was to bring the voices of children and adolescents from Guatemala to the United Nations Committee on the Rights of the Child. I presented the different problems which affect our rights and integrity, and recommended strategies to improve the situation.

FINANCING NEEDS JOB OPPORTUNITIES FOR YOUTH (YO-SE) FRIENDLY AGRICULTURE FOR CHILDREN

GOAL To prevent unnecessary separation of youth between 15 and 24 years from their families, particularly from poor indigenous families of the Western Plateau.. We respond to their social and economic aspirations by providing access to the job market and opportunities for self-employment to make the most of their potential and increase their income.

GOAL To increase the income of small farmers and their families on the Western Plateau to improve the nutrition of their children, increase agricultural productivity, diversify means of income generation, and broaden market access.

4,000 youth between 15 and 24 years. Strengthening skills through vocational school to help the indigenous youth improve their employability, vocational skills and find and keep employment and/or start a successful small business.

PROTECTION OF MIGRANT CHILDREN AND ADOLESCENTS

PSYCHOSOCIAL CARE DURING TIMES OF CRISIS

GOAL Prevent unaccompanied migration of children and adolescents and impede the violation of their rights while migrating, through child protection and promotion of their rights.

IMPACT

Increase access to reliable, relevant and timely psychosocial support during times of crisis for adolescents between 13 and 19 years who live in areas with high violence rates.

IMPACT

550 children and adolescents from 5 departaments. 125 civil-society leaders 125 representatives of institutions offer protection and social services. 575,000 beneficiaries reached through a sensitization campaign on risks associated with migration in Guatemala City and 4 departments.
