MESSAGE FROM THE SLD PRESIDENT: MORGAN ALLAIN, FRANKLIN SUPPLY
A WILLINGNESS TO ADAPT Change - a topic that is often brought up and discussed in the Southern Leadership Division (SLD). In an industry that is constantly evolving, change is inevitable. Although the COVID-19 pandemic is an obstacle we likely would have never predicted, I believe our openness to change and willingness to adapt has helped the SLD face the past year with resilience. One of the main changes implemented by the SLD in 2020 was postponing our November meeting which was originally planned to take place in Grand Rapids, MI and choosing to have our annual SLD Business Resource Meeting virtually. During our virtual meeting, The Southern’s President, Marty Howell held a thoughtful dialogue which ultimately gave our participants lots of insights on the industry and leadership. We also welcomed another familiar face, Terry McKenna. Terry tackled the topics of new leadership roles, responsibilities and responses needed to be successful in the ever-changing world/industry we are faced with today. Additionally, Altria sponsored Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion expert Risha Grant, who delivered an incredibly insightful and eye-opening presentation on the topic of unconscious biases and DEI in the workplace. Her session included strategies and tactics companies can utilize to create a culture of inclusivity in the workplace. Earlier this year, the SLD was proud to launch the Greg Martin Legacy Virtual Education series, providing Southern members with more educational opportunities. The three-part series will take place throughout the year and will cover topics ranging from leadership development to branding. I would like to personally thank Terry McKenna for sharing his expertise for the series. Looking forward, the SLD plans to meet in person for our 2021 November meeting in Grand Rapids, MI. This meeting will be packed with great education, networking and tours that are sure to enhance our knowledge of our industry as a whole. I look forward to seeing you in November!
