f there was a theme for this issue it would be sponsorship! It has been a long time since I have been able to “brag” about the sponsors in women’s golf and this issue shows that the tide is turning. It is obviously easier to attract sponsors to a sport when the players are succeeding and are attracting a lot of coverage both locally and internationally. Lee-Anne Pace started this phenomenon last year with her five successive victories and completed the season being the first South African to win the Order of Merit on the Ladies European Tour (LET). It is however, important to point out that Ashleigh Simon finished in fourteenth position which is also a great achievement and she is the South African who has made headlines early in the 2011 season with a win in the Portugal Ladies Open. With a total of seven SA ladies playing on the LET this season, the most we have ever had, we are following in the men’s footsteps and becoming a force to be reckoned with on the International Tours. Players like Stacy Bregman and Tandi Cuningham finished just outside the Top 50, with Tandi in a playoff for the title in India at the end of last season. Morgana Robbertze has her full LET card and with some fundraising ventures and good finishes, she hopes to be able to play more events this season. Laurette Maritz has become a stalwart of the LET
and with her custom designed African print attire, she is truly “proudly South African” and is a favourite in many of the countries the tour passes through. Connie Chen is our youngster and the SA rookie on tour. Connie has only played three events so far and already has two top 40 finishes. This is a lady to watch for many years to come. As you read through this issue, take note of companies like SWAGG and Subaru, who are the latest brands to support our girls. It is important for us amateur lady golfers to show these companies that we value their commitment to the sport, as that is the only way to encourage further investment. Ultimately, we would like to see the revival of a local tour, giving us the opportunity to watch our local lasses and some of the best players in the world, playing right here in SA. Almost every event has a sponsor linked to it, so get out and do your bit to support. Whether you choose a cause like the Sanlam Cancer Challenge or attend one of the Peugeot Series events as a beginner or enter your children to play in one of the Glacier Junior Series, show the sponsors of the sport that we are as dedicated to following their events as they are to sponsoring them. Speaking of “following”……the advent of social media has to be the primary life changing experience of our modern era. It allows us to bring the
whole world not only onto our doorstep, but right into our hand. I have created a Twitter account and promise to keep you updated on the results of our girls on Tour, as well as sponsor information, events and of course which courses we are playing and which resorts we are visiting. So if you are a “Tweeter” follow @SAWomanGolfer and be the first to know everything about women’s golf in SA. Last but certainly not least, it is our 4th BIRTHDAY ISSUE!! “Happy Birthday to us” and a BIG THANK YOU to all the people who have contributed over the past four years. My Creative Team – you guys ROCK and make each issue look better and better. To my loyal and supportive advertisers – without you, we would not have a magazine. To my editorial contributors (names listed below) – thank you for making my job such a pleasure. Cheers! Here’s to many more years!! See you in due course!

Lookingover Back the years By Shelley Galliver
I
t is hard to believe that the magazine has been around for four years already and although it seems young in terms of business, it has had to face a number of challenges over the past few years, including a recession which has crippled many larger publications. So I thought it was apt to look back over the years; not to highlight the struggles, but rather to remind you of the highs and jaw-dropping moments in women’s golf. Who can forget the announcement that South Africa would host the first ever Women’s World Cup of Golf, following the vision of two women, who were able to secure this amazing tournament. Held at Fancourt in George the first year, prior to the magazines existence, I can still remember the buzz of excitement as all my Jo’Burg friends got online to book air tickets and accommodation. Never before had we seen the best lady players in the world visiting our shores. Over the next few years, names like Annika Sorenstam, Laura Davies, Trish Johnson, Ji-Yai Shin, Julieta Granada, Ai Miyazato and Juli Inkster were soon to become well known within the South African golfing fraternity, as we watched these players live. For those who couldn’t be there in person, there was all day live TV coverage, something no other women’s golf event had managed to achieve. After starting the magazine, I remember the thrill of being able to interact with the players and personalities attending the tournament at Sun City, where it was held for the next three years. Each year the tournament got bigger and better and people marked it in their calendars way ahead of the time. One of the most memorable moments was watching the final group coming down the 18th in 2008 (remembering that for this tournament the nines were reversed, so this is ordinarily the 9th hole). The Koreans who had led for most of the tournament had dropped two shots behind the Philippines after 4 extraordinary birdies in a row. Having to attack the Par 5 in two, for an eagle opportunity to force a play off, Ji-Yai Shin
stronger. Development was also benefiting and the target of having 2014 previously disadvantaged handicapped golfers, seemed more than a realistic goal. The value of the sport has not decreased and I am confident that as companies recover from a tough economic environment, we will indeed see women’s golf back up where it deserves to be. There is a desperate need to revive our local tour and give all the up and coming young stars a “blooding” ground to get used to competing at this level. This would also give us the opportunity to watch our own top players and the chance to attract international players back to South Africa. There is even the option of having a co-sanctioned event with the Ladies European
(who was then ranked 9th in the World) hit the approach shot which she pushed right. Miraculously the ball ricocheted off a rock in the water hazard and landed on the green 30-feet from the pin. But the Philippines, Dorothy Delasin, sank a 15foot birdie putt to seal their victory. With the publicity around women’s golf on the increase, we also saw an expanded local Ladies African Tour with four events played during the month of March. With the promotion of South Africa around the world as a result of the World Cup, we saw an influx of international players competing on the local tour. With fantastic weather, great courses and the chance of

But it was the fact that our local girls Lee-Anne Pace, Ashleigh Simon, Stacy Bregman and Tandi Cunningham were winning despite this international competition, which highlighted our depth of talent in this country. This tour gave our ladies a solid grounding for competing on an international platform, where today they are all performing admirably. Sponsors were flooding into the game and getting “bang for their buck”. Women’s golf could not have been

Ashleigh Simon
secures second professional victory Ladies European Tour
S
outh African Ashleigh Simon claimed the ISPS Handa Portugal Ladies Open by three shots after carding a brilliant five under par 67 in windy conditions at CampoReal Resort and Spa near Lisbon. The Johannesburg 22-year-old dislodged veteran Gwladys Nocera atop the leader board with eight birdies and three bogeys on a warm final day in the municipality of Torres Vedras. Simon took command after she went to the turn in three-under 33, to move four ahead of overnight leader Nocera. She carded two bogeys and four birdies coming home for a back nine total of two under 34 to finish on 16 under par overall. It was her second victory on the Iberian Peninsula, her only other victory coming at the 2007 Catalonia Ladies Masters in Spain, shortly after turning professional at the age of 18 almost exactly four years ago. Her best finish this season had been a tie for seventh at the Lalla Meryem Cup
in Morocco. “It’s been four years since my last win and this one feels very special because I’ve been working for a long time. It shows that all the work is starting to pay off now and I hope it can continue.” She thanked her boyfriend and caddie David Buhai, her coach and her fitness trainer for their part in her victory. Runner-up Nocera, who began the day with a one stroke advantage, had a nightmare start to the final round and was out in 38 with four bogeys and an eagle on the front nine. She recovered well with birdies on each of the closing three holes for a one under par 71 after the strong winds of the morning had calmed down. Nocera said: “I started off not really good; it was really windy and I put a ball in the water with the second shot on number one; I took a bogey on number two. I put another ball in the water on eight, so that was way too many mistakes

and I didn’t make a single putt so I gave away so many things and Ashleigh played really well. I’m happy to finish second but if I want to win I have to not make mistakes.” The recent Turkish Airlines Ladies Open winner Christel Boeljon of the Netherlands finished third on nine under par after a final round of 72. Italian Diana Luna, who shot 73, finished tied fourth with Frenchwoman Virginie Lagoutte-Clement, who posted 74. South African Stacy Lee Bregman and England’s Georgina Simpson were a shot further back in joint sixth. We asked Stacy about her week, “I really enjoyed Portugal. It is funny how you can have weeks where you feel like you just don’t have to prepare as hard and Portugal was one of those weeks. I was very happy with my 6th position.” South African youngster Connie Chen who is in her rookie year on tour, finished in T38 position.

How does it feel to be the Portugal Open champion? It’s a bit surreal right now. Obviously I’m very happy. I’m sure it will sink in later. Any nerves? I was surprisingly not as nervous as I thought I would be. I went into the day knowing I was one behind and the conditions were very difficult this morning, a lot of wind. I knew I just had to play my own game. I started off with a birdie, which was a good thing. I kept steady and wasn’t really watching the leader boards or worrying about what Gwladys was doing. I was six ahead with three to play and then I dropped 16 and Gwladys birdied so all of a sudden it went to four. Then after the birdie on 17 and the drive down 18, I knew that it was mine. How were you feeling on 18? I was pretty relaxed. I was laughing already. I had my mates in the background ready with the champagne and water and it was nice to be able to have a four shot cushion and if I didn’t make the birdie it wasn’t a huge problem, so it was a great feeling.
How do you feel and what does it mean? It’s a huge honour to win any Ladies European Tour event. I think that the climate is so similar to South Africa’s so I felt comfortable here the whole week. It’s been an absolutely great week. Goals for the future? I think I’ll have to re-think them. Next week we’re playing in Germany and I finished third there last year. I enjoy that golf course so I’ll try and win next week. Right now, I’ve got seven more weeks
know what score I was on so I was very focused. 66, 67, 67 so very consistent. It’s been four years since my last win and this one feels very special because I’ve been working for a long time. It shows that all the work is starting to pay off now and I hope it can continue. I think it’s my best score ever in a tournament so I’m very happy. How will you celebrate? I’m staying with my friends so we’ll probably have a barbecue and take it all in. A long time since your last win? It’s been a rough two and a half years before last year. I was playing in America and then last year I came back to Europe and changed coaches. We knew it would all finally pay off and it did.
It was basically exactly four years ago since I last won and I was 18 at the time, very young; and I’ve been working hard for about a year and a half now, so it feels very rewarding
Played LPGA 2008-2009? 2008 I had conditional status and in 2009 I had full status but I was injured for about two and a half months. To keep my tour card was difficult so I had
What does this mean to you? It was basically exactly four years ago since I last won and I was 18 at the time, very young; and I’ve been working hard for about a year and a half now, so it feels very rewarding. I get to play the Evian, which is what you always try to get into and I’m guaranteed for the British. For my career I think it’s great. What did you do well? I just stuck to my own game. I went out there and played the course every day. We had different conditions every day, but I think my short game really saved me. I putted well and when I had to make the up and downs I did. Were there people that helped you? My coach back home; Douglas Wood. I’ve been working with him for just over a year now and we’ve worked so hard to get my swing to where it is. My biokinetics man, Garth Milne. I’ve got just so many people back home that there are too many to thank, but these are two very important people that have got me to where I am.
so I’ll get though and re-set my goals. How did you play? I played really well the whole week and didn’t let my head get away. I didn’t
to re-group and get back to basics. I’m happy to play in Europe. Right now we have many tournaments to play and it’s getting better and better. Last year I finished 11th.

COURSE REVIEW
Arabella Hotel and Spa AND a magnificent 18 Hole Golf Course! By Shelley Galliver
When I was invited to the Arabella Hotel and Spa to do a course review and spend some time in the luxurious hotel, with a visit to the Spa, I couldn’t book my air ticket fast enough!
I
was lucky to have stayed in the hotel once before, but it was just over four years ago, and since then I had played the course once during our annual golf tour last year, which took us down to the Western Cape. But I had never had the opportunity to review the course before which believe it or not, makes you consider so much more during your round than you would ordinarily. In fact, do yourself a favour and next time you play a course try and imagine having to relay your experience to numerous people afterwards – and not about how you played but about the course. Consider the layout, the scenery and sur-
rounds, the course condition, the flow and the location of tee-boxes to assess whether it is a lady friendly design. If it is a great course, you leave with a new found respect for the designer and the green keeper and no matter the score, it will be a firm favourite forever more. Arabella is just such a course, and as I take you through some highlights of the 18 holes you will understand why. Arrive the right way When arriving at Arabella, even if you are only there to play golf, send your clubs round the side of the hotel – but walk through the hotel and

catch the lift down to the ground floor. Outside the lift reception area, the architectural design of the hotel gives you the most amazing views with glass frontage on both sides of the building. One side gives you a stunning outlook over the 18th, 10th and the 1st hole, bordered by the Bot River Lagoon, while the other side has you longing for a dip in the enticing hotel pool that has water cascading down the rock waterfall feature. Beginning your round The word “experience” is often mentioned when it comes to visiting
Highlights of the Course One of the things that stood out is that the entire course is literally manicured, it looks like it came out of a “golf salon”. The fairways, especially around the greens are mowed with precision, the bunkers are raked to perfection and the greens, are in pristine condition. It is only the presence of natural fynbos and other indigenous flora that gives the course “a wild side”. The views from almost every hole are spectacular, with either the Bot River Lagoon or the majestic Kogelberg Mountains featuring prominently in the surrounds. One of the mountain ranges, that looks like a lady lying on her back, has affectionately been named “Lady Arabella” by the locals. The course designed by Peter Matkovich, has been ranked as the number one course in the Western Cape region on numerous occasions and is always in the top ten in the country and de-
servedly so. A few outstanding holes deserve a mention, although most of the holes rely on a solid and accurate drive. The 1st hole is a tough little uphill Par 4, that without a well positioned drive, can make it a difficult approach shot and a tough par. The downhill 5th hole Par three, guarded by a deep front bunker, has many a player miscalculating the distance to the green. Walking away with a par on this hole can be seen as a victory. The 8th Hole has been named as one of the best Par 5 holes in the country. Your drive is out towards the mountains and the lagoon in the
of a hole. Likewise the finishing hole on the back nine, the stunning Par 5 18th, has to be one of the best finishing holes in the country. Apart from running parallel to the lagoon, it is bunkered down the right-hand side and between a drainage trench, bunkers and foliage on the left; accuracy of every shot is key. The green is tucked away around a dogleg to the right making it difficult to get to in two. This tough last hole is best played with a safety first approach. A par is a good score, but play the hole cleverly and you may just be lucky to take home a birdie.
One of the things that stood out is that the entire course is literally manicured, it looks like it came out of a “golf salon”. distance, with a sloping fairway that will assist your run if you land in the right area. With a water hazard to the right and bunkered all the way up the left, to an almost island green, your second shot will be a difficult approach if you are going for it in two. Laying up onto the fairway and getting to the green in three is the safer play. This still gives you a good opportunity for a birdie or a par, but you have to play the hole strategically and strike the ball well. My favourite hole on the course is the Par 4, 9th hole. From the ladies tee box, it is 239m to the front of the green. So if you are a good driver of the ball, you can take the “tiger line” over the fynbos bordering the lagoon and put yourself in position for an eagle. I am proud to say I was on the green for one, but sadly missed the eagle putt and had to settle for a birdie. It is a great challenge
There is something unique about most of the holes and I could go on and on, but I would rather say go and experience it for yourself, you won’t be sorry. With winter upon us, it is the ideal time for South Africans to treat themselves and visit Arabella Hotel and Spa as they have fantastic winter packages including accommodation, golf and spa. The resident Pro, is Golf Hall of Famer Alison Sheard. Alison who was a 9 times winner of the SA Open and also a British Ladies Open Champion, is always on hand to assist you with your game. I recommend a lesson with this legend if staying in the hotel. I was lucky enough to play my 18 holes with Alison, which was a real treat for me and probably the reason I played well. She just inspires confidence and her knowledge of the course was a real help as well.

golfing establishments and takes into account not only the condition of the course, but your whole golfing journey from the time you park your car to when you drive out of the gate at the end of the round. I can honestly say that the staff at Arabella Golf Club rank among the best in the country. You are met at the car and your clubs are taken care of; if you book a cart they are loaded and even get a bit of a clean before you set out. The staff are helpful and friendly, and if you are staying for a few days, they will be happy to lock your clubs up for you and for each tee time you have booked, your clean clubs will be ready and waiting. You can also get your golf shoes cleaned after each round. It makes you play better golf, wearing clean shoes. From the moment you arrive, you are treated like a VIP.
COURSE REVIEW
The Arabella Hotel It goes without saying that the accommodation is first class. The rooms are spacious, with plenty of cupboard space, a stunning open plan bathroom bedroom design and if you are like me and enjoy winding down with a bit of TV before bed, there is a great selection of channels. What sets one hotel apart from another are the facilities and activities that they offer. ATM – There is an ATM on the premises which is great if you need cash and don’t want to leave the property. Children’s Play Area / Childminding Services – Balou’s play den is a safe and supervised area for children between the ages of 5 and 12. Open seven days a week, Balou’s offers jungle gyms, books, arts & crafts, videos and video games, puzzles and more. So you can play a round of golf or spend the morning in the Spa, with the peace of mind in knowing that your children are having fun and being well cared for. Fitness Centre – Located in the Arabella Spa, this well equipped facility ensures that you can maintain your physical fitness while on holiday. The hair salon, library, swimming pool area, Putt-Putt course and tennis courts are just some of the facilities at
your disposal. The Arabella Spa With 16 treatment rooms, catering for both single and couples treatments, the spa offers a wide variety of therapeutic, regenerative and luxurious facial and body treatments. Incorporating a philosophy of the healing power of touch to bring about relaxation, improved immunity and general wellbeing, the spa also has a heated hydro pool, a sauna and a steam room which are open to all hotel guests, even if you are not having a spa treatment. The Spa offers a treatment which is unique to Arabella called The African Rainforest Experience. After an extensive upgrade of the Spa, this treatment is covered in a 15 step process, alternating hot and cold water treatments that signal to the body to detoxify. The hot processes warm the body, relax the muscles and open your pores, while the cold cools the body, improves circulation and stimulates the expulsion of toxins and lymphatic drainage. Ultimately you will find yourself in the Candle Room, rehydrating and feeling very relaxed; you can fall asleep on one of the comfortable beds. This room is also available to all Spa guests, to
encourage people to extend their stay in at Spa. Restaurants and Bars Laguna Lounge – the ideal relaxed environment to grab a coffee during the day. They also have a sushi menu from lunch till late, which is irresistible. Laughing Waters Pool Bar – Where better to enjoy a cocktail on a hot summers day than next to the pool? Christobals Cigar Bar – Leather couches, a roaring fire and dramatic views of the lagoon; the perfect spot to unwind after a long day or in the winter evenings. Premiére Restaurant – “Cape Coastal Cuisine” in this fine dining establishment, with a good bottle of wine, could be the ideal evening spent with a loved one. Barnabas Bar – The perfect place to meet friends, watch some sport or just have a sundowner overlooking the manicured gardens with the mountain range in the background. Jamani Restaurant – A reflection of South Africa’s love affair with good food and wine. The best comfort food restaurant based on traditional South African faire. Ideal for all day casual dining. The breakfast buffet is also served in this facility.

For those who prefer to stay ashore, quad biking, mountain biking and abseiling are all located in close proximity. As part of the World Heritage Site Cape Floral Kingdom, the region is rich in fynbos and offers many walking and hiking experiences and also makes it a bird-watchers’ paradise. Others may be looking for less energy expending activities; the wine routes are also within a half an hour’s drive from Arabella Hotel and Spa. The Western Cape is one of the most famous and productive regions for wine production, not to mention picturesque. I was lucky enough to visit Creation Wine Estate located 18km from the town of Hermanus. It is an intimate estate that markets their wines through food pairings. an accompaniment to good food and have done extensive research into their menus to bring the best out of their wine. Owned and managed by wine makers who “cut their teeth” in the industry in Switzerland, they have managed to produce some unique blends that were previously thought to be impossible in this region. My favourite was the Syrah, a red blend wine which is fairly easy drinking. I am always looking for a red that you can drink at lunch and I found it in this wine. The Hemel-en-Aarde valley is home to numerous wine estates and an ideal outing, even if the weather is not ideal; when a raging fire and fine wine can only make it a perfect day. Hermanus also has numerous restaurants and shopping is a treat with interesting local art, jewellery, pottery and crafts to choose from.

The Overberg Region When planning a holiday, it is always important to know what to do in the area. For this reason, we took the time to investigate the Overberg region. The Cape Overberg is known as The Whale Coast, with pristine beaches, ideal for swimming or surfing or even just soaking up the sun. A range of activities can be organised by the concierge at the hotel, the most popular being whale watching. Arabella Hotel and Spa is situated close to Hermanus, internationally recognised as the world’s whale watching capital. Between June and November, the Southern Right Whales visit these shores to calf and mate and can often be seen close to shore. Alternatively, you can book a boat trip with a licensed whale watching operator. At nearby Gansbaai, a well known Great White Shark area, shark cage diving is an

A Boost for sa Professional women’s golf By Natalie Van Blerk

Morgana Robbertze
omen’s Professional Golf in South Africa has recently received a much needed boost thanks to a handful of individuals and companies who have pledged their support for our very talented players! One such player is Morgana Robbertze, who received a cheque for R25 096 from Cloud9Golf, raised at Robbertze’s golf day held at Jack Creek Golf Estate. These funds will assist Robbertze with the means to continue to represent SA on the Ladies European Tour and realise her dreams. Having just landed that morning from a successful tournament in Morocco, an elated Robbertze was very grateful for the effort by all. “I am extremely thankful to Cloud9Golf and their team for giving up their time to arrange such a successful day, the hosts who came to the party, Jackal Creek and my sponsors Mizuno, Rudi’s Project, Subaru and the golfing public who played on the day. “ The golf day also led to two new apparel sponsorships that have just been announced by SWAGG for both Robbertze and the talented Tandi Cuningham, who is also playing on the LET. Sean Shomang, CEO of SWAGG, played in the golf day with Robbertze and commented: “Golf takes dedication, passion and commitment to master. The ladies who play professionally lack none of these qualities which makes them as good as the male professionals who play on tour. Our brand is about attitude and Morgana and Tandi display this in bucket loads. We are excited to sponsor them and hope this is the beginning of bringing focus back to the lady’s circuit. We will leverage the relationships we have to make this dream for these stars a reality.” Cuningham was also excited about the support SWAGG is giving to woman's golf. “I look forward to being an ambassador of SWAGG’s brand and woman's professional golf. They have a very classic and chic product that I know I can wear confidently. The clothing also encapsulates a funky yet relaxed style which is nicely aligned to my personality.” Shelley Galliver, editor of SA Woman Golfer is very upbeat about the support which has come at the right time, given that South African women’s professional golf has never been stronger than it is at the moment. “We currently have seven players featuring on the Ladies European Tour, with Lee-Anne Pace having won the Order of Merit at the end of last year. It is the perfect opportunity for corporate investment into the ladies and into women’s golf on the local platform. If they are willing to invest they will create massive brand awareness, not only in South Africa but globally.” Jun/Jul/Aug 2011

Supporting Women’s Golf By Shelley Galliver
I
t is so encouraging when large consumer brands recognise the value of getting involved in women’s golf and supporting one of our lady professional golfers, Morgana Robbertze. We spoke to Grant Bowering, Brand and Marketing Manager for Subaru Southern Africa, about their brand and market objectives in South Africa. “Subaru has evolved as a brand in Southern Africa since coming to our shores in the early 90s when it had a predominantly male following and by implication, purchase as well. With greater choice of product since then, and a focus on our SUV offerings, we now see a greater number of families and female buyers of our brand and our focus is strengthening this position.” We asked Grant why Subaru has chosen to get involved in women’s golf? “Traditional Subaru owners spend time researching their products prior to purchase and make informed choices. They do not want a vehicle to simply get from A to B, but are rather pedantic about ensuring that the vehicle meets all their criteria, often needing the car to perform in different ways for different situations. This could be likened to the playability of the same golf course on different days or in different conditions. We also saw a synergy with the way golfers choose their equipment and clothing. Golf is a lifestyle,
as is the Subaru brand. Over the years, the vehicles have become more luxurious and stylish; a more refined drive all round. We also know that Subaru has gained more of a female focus; they are the decision makers when it comes to purchasing and are the ones driving our cars.” How does Morgana feel about the sponsorship? “A prominent brand like Subaru is supporting not only me, but women’s golf. I have a very optimistic view of the future with a brand like Subaru getting involved for the next year. I believe it will lead to more corporates seeing the value in supporting the ladies playing on the leading golf tours around the world! Perhaps it may bring about a resurgence of the local tour, which would be wonderful! A fresh look at the opportunities available in women’s golf might just be what we need in SA.” And the car? “I am so delighted that I made contact with Subaru and they decided to sponsor me! It is almost surreal and I didn’t quite believe it till I got to their offices and saw the branded car with my name on it. I think it only really sank in when I went back a couple of days later to collect it! I remember thinking…. PINCH ME, I AM DRIVING AN AWESOME SUBARU CAR THAT HAS BEEN SPONSORED! The branding on the car is probably the most eye catching
I have seen. It is funky and fresh and I love driving it around, because it gets so much attention. Subaru went out of their way to brand it fittingly and I must say the effort paid off! Thank you Subaru!” Morgana is now driving a Subaru Outback 2.0 Diesel All-wheel Drive. “It is an awesome drive and the boot space and the finishes in the car are unbelievable! It’s smooth, has all the bells and whistles and plenty of little spaces for all my goodies, golf and otherwise. Being one of the safest cars on the road, it keeps my precious cargo (my golf clubs) safe. It is also easy to see why Subaru is one of the leaders in its segment for service and customer satisfaction, as the dealings I have had with them have been effortless. I now understand why people become so loyal to one car brand, I can’t see myself ever moving away from Subaru, now that I have had the pleasure of driving one.” How does Grant believe Morgana will take the brand forward in the golfing segment? “In Morgana we recognised flair and dynamic ability. She epitomises a Subaru owner and driver. They are people who are passionate about their hobbies, lifestyle and family. Morgana exudes all these attributes and we see her as a fitting ambassador for our product.”

CATCH UP COLUMN
Catch By Lesley Copeman
The Need for Personalities
F
irstly, let me say a very big Happy 4th Birthday to Shelley and her team at SA Woman Golfer. In this economic climate it is a fantastic achievement to start up a magazine – especially one in a niche market and to keep it going. Well done and I wish you many more happy years. I would like to talk about the entertainment value in golf. Let’s face it – professional sport is a show and one has to make the watching of it really exciting. There are many other sports and entertainment all fighting for the same leisure dollar. In order to excite the public you have to have “stars” and they have to have charisma. Like all modern day writers I turned to Google to get the dictionary definition of charisma (my Oxford English Dictionary is somewhere in my house gathering dust) and of course Google in turn leads me to Wikipedia. Wikipedia has the following to say: The term charisma has two meanings: 1) compelling attractiveness or charm that can inspire devotion in others 2) a divinely conferred power or talent It is the first definition that will be used in this column. Why am I talking about charisma? As I write, Sevriano Ballesteros has just recently lost his battle against brain cancer. How sad and he was far too young. It was close to home for me as we are of a similar age and I grew up watching Seve on TV, pumping his fist on sinking a really long or important putt, punching shots out of ridiculous positions and having the crowds absolutely devoted to him. Some sportsmen just “have it”. Seve certainly had charisma and he changed European golf once he burst on to the scene. Other male golfers that naturally “have it” are: Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus, Gary Player, Lee Trevino, Tiger Woods, Greg Norman, Tom Watson and Ernie Els, to name a few. On the ladies scene Nancy Lopez, Annika Sorrenstam, Sally Little, Helen Alfredson and Laura Davies spring to mind. These guys and girls just have a certain ‘presence’. People just want to follow them. It is essential that the tours do have personalities with charisma as this is the lifeblood of marketing the tour. You only have to look at the viewership figures when Tiger Woods does not play or when Annika was not in the field. Players have to have something that makes them stand out from the crowd. Ian Poulter and Paula Creamer do it with their clothing. Paula is known as the Pink
22

Panther – everything about her is pink – from her clothes, shoes, golf bag right down to her wood covers. It also helps of course that she is a looker. Natalie Gulbis also makes a statement with her bold and sometimes brash appearance. Laura Davies simply has an imposing presence and hits the ball so far it is ridiculous. She wears a size 11 shoe – which is enough to make her different to others. Part of enjoying sport is taking sides and favouring certain players. Let’s face it we all love it when a South African wins – hence my lack of sleep when Charl Swartzel won the US Masters. This is why it is always good to have players that dominate a field. Every time a great is in the field he/she is always mentioned as a favourite. The LPGA tour went through a period when the Asians were completely dominating the tour. And it was a different one every week – and although they are fantastic players (the Koreans) I would think Americans find it hard to identify with any one of them. Don’t get me wrong – they are fantastic golfers but most of them seem to come from the same mould – quiet, determined and emotionless. The pattern has changed a little lately, and whilst there are still some Asians – namely Yani Tseng, Ji Yai Shin and Ai Miyazoto (remember her from the Japanese team that won the inaugural Women’s World Cup of Golf) dominating the LPGA, they do have charisma and are multiple winners. South African golf is particularly lucky in that we have a few good men (and women) flying our flag – Gary Player, Ernie Els, Retief Goosen, Charl Swartzel, Trevor Immelman, Nick Price (let’s claim him even though he is Zimbabwean), Sally Little, Lee-Anne Pace (five time a winner in 2010 on the LET), Laurette Maritz, Alison Sheard and a host of other great players. Although it is always good to have the underdog win an event and to see new talent emerge, there is a huge need for ‘stars’ to emerge on the golf tours. I pick a movie to watch if the cast is good. Put Meryl Streep, Robert de Nero, Al Pacino in a movie and even if the critics have slammed it, I will pay good money to see the film. It is after all the ‘names’ that sell the Tour and bring in sponsors.

can, off the top of my head, think of a number of friends who can be found at the casino on a Friday night and then on the tee-box on the Saturday or Sunday morning. Yes, I am talking to you! So when I was invited by the Caledon Casino to join their Duke of Edinburgh event at Arabella Golf Club, I jumped at the chance. Although we have been covering the event for the past two years, I had not yet had the opportunity to play in what has been called “South Africa’s most prestigious amateur golf tournament”. Having seen how few women were in the field, I asked myself, where are all these gaming ladies and why aren’t they queuing up to book their spot. The organisation and attention to detail is superb. The gift box, which contains only top quality items, is already a “win”. The carts are ready and waiting, with
our names on them – making you feel like a “gold card VIP”. And best of all, you know that the money contributed is going towards local charities to make a better life for those less fortunate than ourselves. Furthermore more, if you play well and you hit the “jackpot”, a trip to the home of golf, playing against competitors from around the world AND ....... dinner with the Duke himself, Prince Phillip. This is an experience that most golfers can only dream about. For those of you who are thinking, I am not really a gambler, you have no excuse as this is a golfing event and secondly, every one is a gambler, especially golfers. Do you lay up or go for the green….it’s a gamble, but the reward of birdie or eagle is enticing. Do you take a driver or 3-wood off the tee, to a narrowing fairway….its a gamble. And don’t for one minute think this is just on the course;
Dan Nicholl and Breyton Paulse on their way to the tee
we are faced with choices on a daily if not hourly basis, where we weigh up the options and choose what we think will give us a favourable outcome. I can tell you, choosing to play in the Duke of Edinburgh, win or lose, is a favourable outcome! The day consists of two competitions – an individual stable ford event and a four ball alliance event. The individual winner each of the regional events is then invited to the national final and stands inline to win the trip. The four ball alliance competition adds some team camaraderie and there are also great prizes up for grabs. It is a shotgun start and this is key to one of the most exciting aspects to the day. Each team is given a handheld device for entering their hole by hole scores. Since each team is adding their scores in real time, the device is also loaded with both the Individual and

temperament). Stepping onto the 14th tee, still in 2nd position, one shot off the leader, all I needed was consistency and one good hole. My pep talk to myself clearly didn’t work. I proceeded to hook my tee shot off left, over-shoot the green on the chip and ended up with a neat circle around the maximum shots for the hole, falling from 2nd to 5th. “That’s ok, I can pull it back with a birdie on 15”…… another ring. Falling from 5th to 11th.
Play well and you hit the “jackpot”; a trip to the home of golf, playing against competitors from around the world and dinner with the Duke himself, Prince Phillip. I can tell you choosing to play in the Duke Of Edinburgh, win or lose, is a favourable outcome! to knock the other team off the podium. Turning at halfway, we were confident but the 10th hole saw our team struggle for points and we dropped from 2nd to 6th position. Unfortunately we would not manage to get back near the top, as our second nine saw us fall further and further back, finally finishing in 13th position. But it was my individual fall from glory that had me questioning whether I had any BMT (big match
“Three holes to play, three birdies, a lot to ask, but I can only try.” You guessed it, my third ring in a row – looked like I was drawing the Olympic rings on my score card. Falling from 11th to 15th. Although I cracked under the pressure, it was exhilarating being able to see what was happening throughout the field in real time. The dinner and prize-giving was held at The Caledon. It was only then that I

realised how prominent the field of players had been. With Dan Nicholl as the MC, you know you are in for a fun night, as long as you are not on the receiving end of his fantastic sense of humour. The butt of most of his jokes was Marius Schoeman, South African Sevens player and Breyton Paulse, a South African rugby legend. Werner Greef and Rassie Erasmus are just some of the other rugby greats that were in the room. I did notice that none of them received any of the golfing prizes, but there again; they too could have had a few bad holes. It was the perfect end to an incredible day. reetings once again from the ‘Ladies European Tour’. It is always a pleasure to catch up with you the readers, and give you an insight on what is happening... on the inside. This year we have a record 48 new rookies, which I believe is a growing trend that will continue for years to come! The catalyst for this is the proffessionally glamourous reputation that the ‘Tour’ has garnered over the years with the lady golfers ‘Dressing for Success’! Ensuring that they both look and play the part. Clothing companies clamour to sponsor the Professionals for the simple fact that they are healthy, in great shape

and are a tremendous walking advertisement of their products. I remember when I was growing up, Gary Player and Nancy Lopez....... were both a great example to me of being healthy, fit and consistently classy. To be successful in anything, you need to have a good work ethic, be dedicated to achieving your goals, and never be influenced by others in deviating from your chosen course. Do what is right, not what is easy. Remember to have a check-list ensuring that you are moving positively towards to your goals - never becoming complacent and losing track of your progress. Great leaders are constantly learning, progressing and evolving, because

they all make mistakes. It is only in learning from those mistakes that we can progress and become successful. Success is not based on the amount of money or things accumulated; it is based on the lessons learned and the people that are influenced positively along your journey. Just as much as we would all like to ‘Dress for Success’, remember that beauty starts on the inside! Good luck with your goals this year!! Stay positive, healthy and classy. Work through the hard times, and only measure your success through your own progress and not the progress of others. HAPPY GOLFING!!

Schwartzel inspires Williams’ win at Sanlam Women’s SA Amateur By Lali Stander

im Williams lauded 2011 Masters Champion Charl Schwartzel for inspiring her successful title defence at the Sanlam Women’s SA Amateur Stroke Play Championship. The country’s number one ranked amateur trailed by three going into the final round. Williams said she took a page out of Schwartzel’s book to rise above two disappointing rounds. “Last night I was thinking about the way Charl came from behind to win,” explained Williams. “I struggled with the putter in the first two rounds and I let the frustration get to me on Monday. I lost my cool and it cost me dearly. Charl has managed to stay calm and patient and his putts started to drop. I told myself that is exactly how I needed to approach today.” Williams fought her way to a masterful four-under-par 68 to seal her second successive stroke play title with an emphatic four stroke victory. Her winning total of four-under-par 212 was four shots better than local favourite Bertine Strauss, who carded a 73. Monique Smit slipped into third on two over 218 with a closing 74 while

“It’s quite an honour; it’s a great group of ladies to be amongst.” Strauss was disappointed to finish in the runner-up spot, but said, given her long absence from the game, that second is better than nothing. “I don’t mind losing to Kim because she played a spectacular round,” said Strauss. “The course was really tough to navigate today and she managed to do what we couldn’t, which is to get the putter going.” Golf prodigy Woo-Ju Son had a stronghold on the B-Division from the very first hole and the pint-sized 10-year-old from Bryanston Golf Club completed her winning march with the same precision. Son, a 10-handicapper, outplayed her peers and players up to four times her age. She carded two successive 85s to enter the final round with a six stroke lead and tidied up her victory with a final round 88, beating 40-something Wilna Bredenhann, a 10-handicapper from Namibia, by six shots. Shawnelle de Lange, a 13-year-old from Koster, carded rounds of 91-85-93 to finish third. Although Son never really came under pressure from her challengers, it was a measure of the young prodigy’s single mindedness that she felt she could have done a lot better. “I wanted to win by at least nine or 10 shots,” moaned Son. “I’m happy with the victory but I am disappointed with my scores. My goal at the start of the week was to win the B-Division, so I’m glad I was able to achieve that.”
joint overnight leaders Iliska Verwey and Nobuhle Dlamini signed for 78s to tie for fourth on one over. Williams knew going into the final round that she needed a good start, and back-to-back birdies on the opening holes set her on the right track. “I needed a start like that to get me back into the mix,” said Williams. “I stuck them both quite stiff. On the first hole I hit a seven-iron in, four foot from the hole. At the second, I had a gap-wedge in my hand and left it two foot from the hole. It was nice to get a fast start and get my name back up there on the leaderboard.” Williams dipped to four under with birdies at the fourth and sixth, but gave one back at the ninth and sacrificed another at the eleventh. “I had a couple of silly bogeys around the turn,” said Williams. “I didn’t look at the leaderboards and I had no idea what was happening in the match behind me.“ “I just told myself to just keep my head down, stay patient, grind it out and put the pressure on the girls behind me. Coming in I had another couple of birdies, so it turned out to be a nice, calm day.” Williams was also thrilled to learn that she had joined just a handful of players with back-to-back victories at the Sanlam Women’s SA Stroke Play championship. Alison Sheard won the championship in 1974 and 1975, and again in 1978 and 1979. Tanica van As triumphed in 2002 and 2003 and Ashleigh Simon dominated the tournament from 2004 to 2007.

MATCHPLAY:
Verwey claims Sanlam Women’s SA Amateur
Iliska Verwey and Nobuhle Dlamini
I
liska Verwey underlined her growing potential when she won an enthralling 34-hole marathon against Swaziland’s Nobuhle Dlamini to claim the Sanlam Women’s SA Amateur Match Play Championship title. The WGSA number two was delighted to lift the Match Play trophy just days after letting the Stroke Play championship slip. “It was a great way to cap off the week,” said the newly minted champion. “Winning the Match Play has taken the sting right out of throwing the Stroke Play away.” The 22-year-old Eastern Cape golfer had led the first two rounds of the stroke play championship but couldn’t maintain the focus to challenge Kim Williams, who successfully defended her title. But in the Match Play, Verwey found a way to push the envelope all the way to the winner’s circle. “Any time you play match play it is really tough on your mind. It’s just an emotional rollercoaster you go through each and every match. “Today was especially hard because Nobby really challenged hard. The match was an incredible tussle. She never let up and every time I got my nose in front, she lifted her game. “It all changed for me going down the last 11 holes. I knew I had to dig deep because only birdies would do it

Iliska Verwey and I was able to deliver. “Winning on this stage has been my dream ever since I started playing. To come back after such a disappointing season last year and turn things around like this, is incredible.” Three up through the first eight holes, Dlamini had the match well in hand, but Verwey managed to square the match at the 17th hole. The Eastern Cape golfer had a chance to swing the momentum in her favour after Dlamini’s drive at the 18th landed among the trees and her approach flew the green. A superb chip to a couple of inches from the 2009 champion’s unnerved Verwey, who rushed a 3-foot birdie putt past the hole. When the duel for the biggest prize on the Women’s Amateur Circuit resumed after lunch, it took Verwey another nine holes to swing the match in her favour. She won the 20th, but Dlamini reeled her in at the 22nd and held on through the next hole. Verwey squared the match again at the 24th, lurched ahead with a birdie at the par-five eighth, but Dlamini responded with a birdie of own to square the match again. “I think I hit fifth gear after the turn, when I realised I’d have to knock in some birdies to win,” said Verwey. She holed an 18-footer for birdie at the 29th,

won the 30th with a par and knocked in an 8-footer for birdie at the 31st to go three up. A 15-foot birdie putt at the 32nd moved her four clear, but Dlamini fought back with a birdie at the 33rd to cut her lead to three. Birdies for both players at the par-five 16th saw Verwey close out for a 3 and 2 victory. “That’s the way match play goes,” said Verwey. “It takes the kind of strategy that you don’t use in a strokeplay tournament. Winning this title is tangible proof of how much my mindset has improved. Winning this means everything to me.” In the Championship Plate division, Tiffany Avern-Taplin defeated local favourite Sune du Plooy 5 and 4 to lift the SALGU Trophy. Namibian Wilna Bredenhann held on to beat Rustenburg Golf Club Ladies captain Thelma Dippenaar at the last hole for the B-Division title, while Maggi du Toit downed Nicole Fourie 4 and 3 to win the A-Division Flight. Sammy Barber came from three down to win the B-Division Flight from unheralded six-handicapper, Magda Kruger. The 15-year-old from Pretoria only started playing golf 20 months ago. She held the lead until the 29th hole but Barber finished with three pars and a birdie to win 3 and 1.

72 Hole
Team Championship By Paddy Goodwin
G
auteng North A (Daisies) picked up the Swiss Team Trophy for the second consecutive year when they won the WGSA 72 Hole Teams Championship played at Langebaan Golf Estate in the Boland this week. They had previously won this stroke play event when it was played on home turf in 2008 at Wingate Park and 2010 at Graceland in Mpumalanga. Henriëtte Frylinck anchored the team with her scores counting in all four rounds - 77, 68, 71, 72 to finish on level par 288 and was a worthy winner of the individual Governor’s Trophy. Team members Kim Williams and Nobuhle Dlamini each contributed two scores in this event, in which two of the three scores count in each round. North West A’s team of Bertine Strauss, Nicole Becker and Bonita Bredenhann, winners in 2009 at East London, was runner-up, followed by Southern Cape A, who counted out Mpumalanga A. The Southern Cape team included Sandra Winter, Iliska Verwey and Nicole Loesch. Iliska and Nicole returned to SA at the end of 2010, having studied at colleges in the USA. Following their promotion to the A Division last year,
Mpumalanga’s Izel Pieters, Alana van Greuning and Rochelle Brooks did very well to finish tied third with Southern Cape. North West B gained promotion to the A Division when they picked up the Challenge Trophy by winning the B division. Suné du Plooy anchored the team with scores of 78, 77, 74, 78 (307) and young Mae Cornforth, playing in her first provincial tournament and the experienced Elru Botha were the other two members of the team. Runners-up were Southern Cape B’s Maggie du Toit, Stephanie Perkins and Anezel Zylstra. In third position were Gauteng C’s Chevonne Botha, Larissa Ras and Simoné Burger. Henriëtte Frylinck (77) was one back from Bertine Strauss and Izel Pieters (76) after round one when gale force winds and rain made conditions extremely difficult and scores were high. However her four-under 68 in round two put her ahead and she maintained her lead to win the individual event by five strokes on level par from Bertine Strauss, +5 and Kim Williams, +8. WGSA President Cynthia Rayner announced the South African team to The Spirit – a biennial event which will take place from
2 to 5 November at Whispering Pines, Texas. The team is Iliska Verwey and Kim Williams and they will be accompanied by two men selected by the SA Golf Association. She also announced a junior team to play in the Harder German Junior Championship from 2 – 4 August in Heddesheim, Germany, and the Girl’s British Open Amateur to be played at Gullane Golf Club in the UK from 8 – 12 August. The team is Lara Weinstein, Izel Pieters and Michaela Fletcher. The South African team to represent South Africa at the Astor Trophy (formerly the 5 Nations Commonwealth Tournament) departs on 5 June and the weather conditions experienced at Langebaan this week should stand them in good stead for traditional British coastal weather. The team is Non-Playing Captain Sandra Winter, Tiffany Avern-Taplin, Henriëtte Frylinck, Bertine Strauss, Iliska Verwey and Kim Williams. They will be accompanied by coach Val Holland and Manager Cynthia Rayner. The next event on the WGSA national calendar is the Nomads SA Girls; Championships to be played at Orkney Golf Club from 26 to 28 June.

Sally lends a Little magic
to Glacier Junior Series
By Lali Stander
These days South Africa’s most celebrated female golfer, Sally Little, dedicates much of her time to supporting junior golf around the world. She looks forward to hosting her second Glacier Junior Series event at Royal Cape Golf Club on 4 July 2011.
E
xactly 40 years ago, South Africans held their breath when a young Sally Little left for the United States to pursue her dream of playing on the Ladies PGA Tour. They needn’t have worried. Over the next three decades, Little carved out a little history of her own as the country’s most celebrated female golfer. Having won more than a dozen national and regional amateur titles here at home, the 18-year-old quickly made her mark by winning the LPGA Tour’s Rookie of the Year honours. In her time abroad, Little consistently ranked in the top five in the world. She collected 15 LPGA Tour titles, two Majors - the LPGA Championship in 1981 and the Du Maurier Classic (Canadian Open) in 1988 - and won the Nabisco Championship, which became a major just a year after she secured the title. But after Little had hung up her clubs, women’s golf in South Africa suffered a bleak period. While the men’s circuit produced major winners in Ernie Els, Retief Goosen, Trevor Immelman, Charl Schwartzel

Sally Little and Louis Oosthuizen in the last few decades, it took more than 20 years for the country’s next female golfer to really shine on the international stage. Lee-Anne Pace established herself as one of South African’s leading talents when she won five titles in Europe and claimed the Henderson Money list as the top earning golfer on the Ladies European Tour last year. But Little says there are many future stars in the wings, eager to follow Pace. “I don’t believe we will have to wait that long again,” said Little. “Kim Williams, Iliska Verwey and Bertine Strauss will almost certainly follow in Lee-Anne’s footsteps. Ashleigh Simon has overcome her injuries and got back on the winning track with her victory in Portugal. “But there is also huge potential in the junior ranks and this is where we really have to show our support and give the juniors as many opportunities as possible. “The Glacier Junior Series is one of the best initiatives in the country to develop our young players and give them a solid platform to gain experience.”
Jun/Jul/Aug 2011
Although golf remains central to Little’s life, competitive golf has taken a backseat for now and Little has thrown her weight and expertise behind junior golf. She serves on the board of trustees of the Raymond Ackerman Golf Academy and can often be found interacting with the students at the academy and range at Clovellly Golf Club. She also serves on the Advisory Council of the Duke of York’s Young Champion Series, an annual competition held in the United Kingdom in which the youth from more than 20 countries compete for bursaries to the Wellington College in London. “Just like the Duke of York series, the Glacier Junior Series strives to unearth young talent,” she said. “I feel very privileged to lend my name and reputation to this worthwhile cause. It is imperative for junior golfers to be exposed to tournament procedures and the pressure of competitive golf and the Glacier Junior Series provides this competitive experience in the most professional manner.”
A
pair of 10-year-olds is raising a lot of eyebrows among the more than 50 girls that have entered events on the Glacier Junior Series to date. Those who follow Kaiyuree Moodley were not surprised when she won the C-Division at the Ivano Ficalbi Tournament at Gardener Ross Golf Estate in March. Not even when she gave the boys quite a scare when she narrowly lost to Ezra Rower at the Charl Schwartzel event at Maccauvlei in April. After all, Moodley has won more than 20 titles in her short career and finished fourth overall when she represented South Africa at the US Kids European Championship. And thanks to the Glacier Junior Series, the pintsized sparkplug from Bryanston Golf believes she’ll do even better when she goes back to Scotland for the US Kids European Championship at the end of May. “The Glacier Junior Series has given me a lot of confidence,” she said. “They are real competitions. We play the full length of the golf course and you have to bring your A-Game. Every one in the series is playing to win and the experience of winning at Gardener Ross showed me I really can do it. I’m taking that feeling with me to Scotland..” Fellow Bryanston Golf Club amateur, Woo-Ju Son competes in the B-Division. Son is still hunting her first win on the Glacier Junior Series, but the 10-handicapper believes it’s just a matter of time. “It’s more difficult because the boys and girls play the same tournament, but I have definitely become a better competitor through this series,” she said. “I believe that if I can continue to grow, the
victory will come when I’m ready.” She proved her growing stature with a B-Division victory in the Sanlam Women’s SA Amateur Stroke Play Championship at Rustenburg Golf Club in April. She also cleaned up in the prizes by winning Best Gross score for all three days and Best Net on two of the three competition days. And, like Moodley, she hopes to use her Glacier Junior Series experience to win the Girls 10 division at the US Kids Golf World Championship in the USA in August. “I hope I can take everything I’ve learned and come back a winner,” said Son, who beat other nine-year-olds from across the world for the Girls Under-9 title at U.S. Kids Golf European Championships in Scotland last year.
I could measure myself against the other players.” “First I was surprised, because it was a really well organised tournament, like really professional. The competition was very tough and I had to work hard for my score. I like the fact that the Glacier Junior Series events are open to everyone. It gives all the country’s amateurs a chance to compete and to challenge themselves; I’m definitely going to try to win one of these, so I can have a crack at the big prize. To compete in the prestigious Orange Bowl Junior Invitational in Florida, that’s a big one.”
Park Wants To Shoot For Florida
T
he Glacier Junior Series is all about giving amateur golfers a platform to compete and to gain competitive experience, but for Gauteng golfer Carrie Park, it is also about testing yourself against the best in South Africa. The 14-year-old from Brixton has only played in one event this season, but she scored the Best Net result in the A-Division at Gardener Ross on the day and now she is inspired to claim a spot in the final. “I had a lot of events on the women’s amateur circuit this year, but you tend to get comfortable when you play against the same players in every tournament. So, when I got the chance, I entered the event at Gardener Ross so

Subaru Outback……..uniquely moving!
W
ith Morgana Robbertze having been sponsored a Subaru Outback 2.0 Diesel All-Wheel Drive, I thought it appropriate to test drive this model, in order to give you an in depth analysis of what the vehicle has to offer. I have never had the opportunity of driving a Subaru of any kind before, so the whole experience was a new one for me. The Outback is classed as an XUV or a cross-over utility vehicle and it could not be more aptly described. Aesthetically, it will not only appeal to the traditional SUV buyer, but also to those who prefer more of a sporty sedan, as it fits neatly between the two. It looks hard-hitting enough to tame the roughest terrain, but also domesticated for a trip to the children’s school. One of the first things that struck
40

me about the vehicle was the SPACE. This is an ideal family car and certainly the ideal golfing car. With a retractable boot cover, you could easily fit four golf bags into the boot below the divider and should you have luggage as well, retract the cover and you and three friends could be off for a golfing weekend with all your clubs and luggage in the boot with still more than ample seating and leg room for the passengers. And if you are moving house, because this is the only time I could think you would need more boot space, the seats fold in a 60/40 split configuration. The interior of the vehicle is luxurious, with leather upholstery and upmarket aluminium finishes. The sound system is incredible, with the versatility of a 6-CD front loader shuttle and an AUX point in the console to connect your iPod. Also in the
middle console is a 12V power point for charging your iPod or any other device which can run off 12V power. With a sub-division, it is large enough to easily hold sunglasses, CDs, lip ice, cream, chewing gum, house keys and all the other things us ladies like to have on-hand while driving. There are other compartments in the doors and dashboard and a glove compartment, so there is certainly no lack of storage space. The driver’s seat is exceptionally comfortable and has electronic adjustors. The vehicle is able to store two seating positions, so one for hubby and one for you! There is nothing worse than trying to get your seat back to the “usual” position after someone else has driven your car. I find myself adjusting at every robot for at least a day. This is another thing Subaru has taken care of for you.
While driving, the leather steering feels great underhand and has all the touch controls for the radio, phone (as the car comes standard with Bluetooth, so pairing with any of the smart phones today is as easy as 1-2-3) and cruise control settings, to avoid those speeding fines on the open road. This 2.0 turbo-diesel engine is certainly quick and the drive is remarkably smooth. I was impressed with the acceleration from a starting point but once you are in sixth gear, with the smoothness of the drive, you don’t realise how fast you are actually going. At this point, it seems fitting to mention that the Subaru Outback is also well equipped from a safety perspective, with 7 airbags, of which one is located behind the drivers knees. A first for Subaru and something I had not come across with other manufacturers before. With ABS braking systems, advanced suspension design, a ringshaped reinforcement frame with crumple zones and all sorts of other features, the Outback is definitely “safe and sound”. Subaru calls it “passive safety equipment” and that’s just it - I don’t want to see it, I

just want to know that it will work should I ever need it. The consumption on the engine is excellent, with it averaging 6.5L per 100kms and with the current price of fuel; this is definitely worth taking into consideration. Subaru is also doing its part for the planet. The CO2 emissions from

This model comes standard with a 6-speed manual gearbox and if I had to find one criticism of the vehicle, it would be that there isn’t an automatic or “steptronic” version available. Living in Jo’burg, although these days it seems other regions are getting just as bad, we sit in traffic and with the torque and kW output of the engine, the option of an automatic gearbox for stop start driving, would be an added advantage. You really have the best of all options rolled up into one vehicle, the Subaru Outback. I cannot wait to get the opportunity to investigate the rest of the Subaru range, which over the years has grown and flourished. If the Outback is anything to go by, Subaru will soon be one of the leaders in the luxury car market.

he Paramedics are doing everything in their ability to keep Allison alive... Yes, we are talking golf course stuff. This is not an episode from ER or Grey’s Anatomy. We always remember to have balls, tees and money for the 19th hole. But who ever thinks of their lives…?? Let’s rewind a bit. “OUCH…!!!!!” shouts Allison. Unbeknown to Kate, Allison is highly allergic to bees and anaphylaxis is seconds away. What to do, what do we need, what does our basic first aid kit require? A few of the common accidents or emergencies you might encounter on any golf course can be managed. There are obviously hundreds of possible scenarios, but I’ll be touching on the most serious ones. When you glance over the list, you might think, this writer has missed the plot. Guys and girls, this is real life stuff. By the time you’ve read through it intently, I’m sure that you’ll all be inspired to attend a CPR course. But let me start with the basics. In any Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR), the acronym HHH and ABC will change your life.
Hazards, Hello, Help The principle here is that if there is, for example, a live electrical wire, and your friend has just been electrocuted, but has fallen into the water, then you are NEXT at risk. Always first make sure the scenario is safe. Then follows HELLO, implying that if your friend answers, they are currently in the clear. If not, then their airway is compromised and you need to help. HELP means, if you are alone, you phone an emergency number, put the phone on speaker phone, and then attend to your friend. If you have other people around, ask them to phone, while you attend to your friend. This brings me to another very important point. KNOW the numbers for South Africa’s emergency teams. But that does not only count for South Africa. Should you be travelling overseas, make sure you obtain their relevant numbers.
50

Jun/Jul/Aug 2011
In South Africa, the following numbers might help: ER24 for all your medical emergencies: 084 124 The Flying Squad and Police Services: 10111 National Ambulance Services: 10177
Following your HHH will be the Airway, Breathing, Circulation (ABC) of CPR. In short, according to the latest protocol from the AHA (American Heart Association) a hands only approach is the best. When someone looks like they are not breathing, start with chest compressions. You should try to perform 100 chest compressions in 1 minute. Place one hand on top of the other, and your fingers in between each other. Use the base of your hand and press over the centre of the person’s chest. DO NOT PRESS OVER THEIR STOMACH. Aim to depress the chest about 2cm. (Please note that this is for the lay person. Should you be a trained professional, then please do as you have been taught.)
Here are a couple of scenarios:
1) Choking You are standing on the tee box, and Sharon has just taken a bite from her Lunch Bar but bursts out laughing after you’ve just swung right over your ball. The next moment she places both her hands on her throat and starts making funny noises. No, Sharon is not teasing…Sharon is choking. OK, so what do you do?
Firstly, ask her to give vigorous coughs. If this does not dislodge the object, then you need to attempt the Heimlich Manoeuvre. Stand turned slightly sideways and behind the person, with your one leg in front of the other, holding the person against your hip. Make a fist with your one hand, place the other hand over the first and place them just above the person’s navel. With an INWARD and UPWARD thrust, try to dislodge the object. People, you are attempting to save someone’s life. Don’t be gentle!! If this does not work, then your last resort is slapping the person between the shoulder blades. Should the person lose consciousness, commence compressions.
2) Heart attack / Sudden Cardiac Arrest This is the biggest killer on a golf course. Why? Because the average age for a golfer is older than in any other sport. It’s a sport played out in the heat, leading to severe exhaustion and accompanied by possible smoking and drinking. The rate for survival decreases with every 1 minute that defibrillation is postponed. Thus, if it takes you 5 minutes to get your friend to the clubhouse, then their chance of survival has decreased by 50%. Basically your partner will complain of sudden nausea, grab their chest, experience SEVERE chest pain (not mild, SEVERE), start sweating and then they will collapse due to circulatory compromise. If your partner passes out and stops breathing, immediately start compressions and phone for help!! You might save a life! Also, always make sure you carry 300mg of Aspirin in your First Aid Kit. If you suspect someone is having a heart attack, give it to them immediately!!
3) Hypoglycaemia Know your playing partners. Any person, but especially a diabetic, stands the chance of their sugar levels dropping too low. The important thing is to notice it early and treat it. They will become COLD and CLAMMY, and might appear confused. They might also deny feeling like that, but you NEED to make them drink a Coke.
4) Snake Bite It’s important not to place yourself in harm’s way. Please try and identify
the snake or just make a mental note of what it looked like. Do NOT tie off the limb, suck out the venom, put ice on the wound, or any of the old-wives-tales you have heard. Lightly bandage the wound and phone for help.
5) Severe Allergic Reaction with resultant Anaphylaxis This is the most likely one to catch you off guard. In the case of a severe reaction, your throat can close up in seconds. Should you have a known allergy, then you MUST carry a valid “Epipen” or an ampoule of adrenalin with a syringe at all times. Tell anybody who is playing with you where you keep it and what to do with it!
So what does a basic First Aid Kit contain? This list has been compiled from the kit that is available from ER 24. From here C on you can build a more extensive kit if M needed. • Antiseptic solution Y • Plaster CM • Gauze • Mouth to mouth piece MY • Enos CY • Scissors CMY • Tweezers • Safety pins K • Bandages • Burn shield • Panado • Antihistamine To order your kit, send an email containing the following code: WG02/2011 to Marketing@er24.co.za Guys and girls, the most important point I am trying to make in all of this is, BE AWARE! The biggest problem with golf is that your closest help is anywhere between 1 and 5 holes away… at the clubhouse. And no paramedic, ambulance or any help will get to you in time. YOU are your playing partner’s best chance of survival. Please enquire about a CPR course in your area. We are all at risk! It’s far better to do something, than to do nothing at all. If you’re fearful that your knowledge or abilities aren’t 100 percent complete, remember - the difference between your doing something and doing nothing could be someone’s life.

Perfect Angle! By Garth Milne garth@wannabeachampion.com
O
ne of the most important factors in the golf swing is the ability to return the club to a square position when striking the ball. This will result in a consistent ball strike every time. The key factor that allows you to do this is ‘spine angle’. When you see a teaching pro or a TV analyst assessing a pro’s swing, they will almost always draw a line showing the spine angle. You will note how the golfer maintains this angle throughout their swing. This is the single most important factor that separates pros from amateurs. The muscles responsible for this are the muscles of the back, stomach and glutes, collectively known as the Core. Improving the function of these muscles will help you to attain and maintain a consistent spine angle. The ‘Windmill’ exercise in the previous issue of SAWG focussed on this factor – if you have been doing it properly, you should have noticed the difference. The key is to work hard at keeping your spine straight when you are on the range. You may find
52
sa woman golfer
that you get tired very quickly and you back may even ache the day afterwards. This indicates that you have insufficient strength in your stomach and glutes, but particularly in your back. As such, we will now introduce exercises that focus on strengthening your core muscles, so as to improve your spine angle, creating a more consistent ball strike. In order to do this we’ve incorporated the Swiss Ball into some of the exercises. If you want to improve the functioning of your stabilisation system, why not train in an unstable environment! When choosing a Swiss Ball at the gym or from a sporting goods store, make sure that it is the right size for you. Firstly make sure that the ball is properly inflated (you should only be able to push down about 5 cm into the ball). Now sit on the ball and check that your knees are at 90˚ or just above. Do not train with a ball that is not the right size for you, or under-inflated. This can lead to you not completing the exercise correctly, thereby not getting the benefit from it!

Stability Exercises
Plank: Start by lying face down on a mat with your elbows tucked in and your forearms parallel. Now rise up onto your knees and lift your torso until your hips are the same height as your shoulders. Draw your navel in and keep your back straight. Now straighten your knees and come up onto your toes. Do not sag in your lower back. Hold this position for 15-20 seconds. Repeat 3 times.
Bridge Bum Drops
Cobra:
Swiss Ball Superman:
Start by sitting on the ball. Now roll out on the ball until your shoulders and head are on the ball. Have your knees at 90˚ and hips up! Now fold down dropping your butt to the floor. Think – ‘knees to chest, chest to knees’. Stop just above the floor and then squeeze your glutes to return to the top. Repeat 15 times. Then roll back up on the ball until you are back in the sitting position. Note: try not to use your hands to assist you when rolling out and up on the ball.
Lying face down with your hands at your sides, palms up, raise your chest off the floor but keep your nose pointing down. Now hover you hands off the floor and turn your palms out with your thumbs up. Squeeze your scapulae (shoulder blades) together. Keep your feet on the floor. Progress to using the Swiss Ball as shown. Hold for 15-20 seconds. Repeat 3 times.
Lie over the top of the ball so that your navel is in the middle of the ball. Have even weight on hands and feet. Now raise your one arm and opposite leg until horizontal. Keep both straight. Hold for 5 seconds. Alternate sides, for 10 reps.
Again the key points to remember are: • • • •
Move slowly and maintain control of the movement. Draw your navel in to engage your core properly throughout the exercise. Perform the exercise whilst you can keep good form. Don’t compromise the quality of the exercise by trying to get too many reps in or holding for too long. Incorporate these exercises into your regular gym program and perform them early on in your workout. This will ensure that you are still ‘fresh’ and will maintain good from throughout. These exercises will improve your anatomical positioning every time you strike the ball. Be conscious of your spine angle, work on it at the range and soon you’ll be hitting the ball with greater consistency – the holy grail of the swing.

Handicaps and Scoring
T
he South African Golf Handicapping System (updated February 2011) provides the guidelines to the Unions of the South African Golf Association (SAGA), Women’s Golf South Africa (WGSA) and their member clubs. Any player wishing to compete in a golf competition at an affiliated club must have an official handicap. A player can only obtain a handicap if the player is a registered member of a golf club. How is the handicap calculated? A handicap is calculated with the ten best adjusted gross scores of the last 20 rounds played. A nine hole score must now be entered for handicap purposes. A new member player may also obtain a handicap from the committee with five rounds of golf completed.
How do you score for a round?
Entering Score
56
sa woman golfer
The 18 holes on a golf course are rated 1 to 18 with the most difficult hole rated 1 on the course. The handicap of a player is allocated on the basis of the difficulty of the hole. A player with a 17 handicap will not receive a stroke on the stroke 18 hole of a golf course.
Any player wishing to compete in a golf competition at an affiliated club must have an official handicap. A player is entitled to enter a score of one more than the par of the hole plus the number of handicap strokes a player is entitled to on the hole. Let us look at the following examples; Three players handicapped 8, 24 and 36 are playing the par 4 ninth hole with a rating of 12. The maximum scores the respective players are entitled to is • 5 for the 8 handicap (no handicap stroke is received on this hole + 1) • 6 for the 24 handicap (one handicap stroke is received on this hole + 1) • 7 for the 36 handicap (two handicap stroke is received on this hole + 1)
Jun/Jul/Aug 2011
These maximum scores for handicapping purposes are referred to as the adjusted gross. This means that the score for the competition may be more (in the case of an individual stroke play competition) than the adjusted gross for handicapping purposes. A player is required to enter scores for all rounds played and not only for competition rounds, but the scores of match play rounds may not be entered for handicapping purposes. Competitions in which completion of every hole is not required, as for instance with a better ball stableford, a putt of a partner may be conceded because her partner already scored better points. In this instance, the score for the player whose putt has been conceded will be the number of strokes played plus one stroke for the concession. A player must enter a score for a round or nine holes played within 72 hours after the event. What is the course rating? The other factor required to compute a handicap is the course rating. The course rating is a comparison between courses of their lengths, altitude and the playability by a scratch golfer (0 handicap). The course rating is subtracted from the adjusted gross score to enter a score for handicapping purposes.
The committee is responsible for the addition of scores and application of the handicap recorded on the score card. Identifying the ball
A Scorecard
In any round of a handicap competition, the competitor must ensure that her handicap is recorded on her score card before it is returned to the Committee. At the completion of the round, the marker must sign the score card and hand it to the competitor. The competitor must check her score for correctness, score the card herself and return the card to the committee as soon as possible. Players are advised to confirm and record the score of each hole immediately after the completion of a hole, but without delaying play!
Marking the Ball
A couple of years ago the rules changed so that a player is now required to lift her ball for identification in the hazard, thereby removing the exemption from penalty for playing an incorrect ball in a hazard. It is always to the players advantage to play with a ball properly marked for identification purposes!
(True or False) 1. The rating of a hole indicates the difficulty of the hole in relation to the rest of the golf course. 2. It is compulsory to enter a nine hole score for handicapping purposes. 3. If a player returns a score for any hole higher than actually taken, the score as returned stands. 4. The marker does not have to sign the score card of a competitor provided she hands in the score card personally to the committee. 5. The committee is responsible for the addition of scores and application of the handicap recorded on the score card. 6. A player is disqualified if no handicap is recorded on the score card. 7. A player is disqualified for not entering the stableford points next to the score for the hole in the case of a stableford competition. 8. A player is entitled to enter a score of two more than the par of the hole plus the number of handicap strokes a player is entitled to on the hole. 9. The penalty for playing the wrong ball in a bunker is two strokes. 10. The adjusted gross score of a player is 90 on a par 72 golf course with a course rating of 70. The handicap differential for this round is 20. Answers: 1. True 2. True 3. True 4. False 5. True 6. True 7. False 8. False (One More) 9. True 10. True
Golf is played, for the most part, without the supervision of a referee or umpire. The game relies on the integrity of the individual to show consideration for other players and to abide by the Rules. All players should conduct themselves in a disciplined manner, demonstrating courtesy and sportsmanship at all times, irrespective of how competitive they may be. This is the spirit of the game of golf.

guru
By Gail Smirthwaite – Golf Confidence Coach
It is never too late to improve your handicap or your scorecard!
A
s we take a nostalgic look back over the years, we thought it might be interesting to follow that theme when it comes to your game of golf. Many of you will have been playing golf for some years now and will have created many beliefs around how you play your game and ultimately the limits of your abilities. Often, when we have been playing for a while we do not think to stop and reflect on some of the beliefs we have created about how we play. These negative thoughts on our abilities tend to creep up on us over time. Perhaps a particularly bad game or a repeated poor shot and we are firmly stuck with the belief that we can no longer play well. The good news is that the limiting beliefs we create about our golfing abilities can be changed; the first step is to recognise that we are our own worst enemy when it comes to limiting ourselves and our abilities, and the second step is to choose to change any belief that is not moving us forwards but keeping us stuck in poor play. What we believe we are capable of will ultimately define the end results, no matter how good we are. You only have to watch the professionals who can play remarkably well, but when their mental game goes so does their scorecard! Of course I cannot promise that a positive belief in your ability alone will enable you to win that important tournament or get your handicap into single figures this season, but I can guarantee if you believe that you won’t win or improve your play, you definitely will not!

Unfortunately negative thinking is 100% effective, and although positive thinking will give you the best possible chance to succeed, you will still need those playing skills to help provide the whole package. It is important to remember that if you do feel confident and calm. you are far more likely to perform better than in a state of negativity and stress. Golf is a game that relies on a relaxed and
I cannot promise that a positive belief in your ability alone will enable you to win that important tournament or get your handicap into single figures this season, but I can guarantee that if you believe that you won’t win or improve your play you definitely will not! confident state in order for you to play well. There really is no down side to believing in yourself and your abilities, but what we tend to do over time is to start to play in our comfort zone and believe that we are not capable in playing any better.
Often people turn up to play with only minutes to get onto the first tee; this can only set you up for a somewhat rushed and potentially stressful start to your game. It is important for you to give yourself time when you arrive at the course to warm up both physically and mentally. The best warm up routine varies for each person. The most important thing to remember is to actually have some down time and DO a repeatable warm-up routine in the first place as the mind loves repetition.
REMEMBER:
When it comes to your mental preparations you should become very aware of your own negative self-talk as your sub-conscious mind is predisposed to help you to be right! It is there to ensure that what you think becomes your actions; your sub-conscious mind works equally well with either negative or positive thinking. Always focus on EXACTLY where you want your shot to land and always visualise it happening as part of your pre-shot routine. Your actions will always follow what you last visualise, so make sure your sub-conscious is clear on your intentions and it will help your actions to follow suit. On no account think about any hazards, take them totally out of your mental play and learn to focus only on where you want to go. I guarantee that if you repeat exactly the same preshot routine for each and every shot, and you learn to focus on the perfect landing during your pre-shot routine, that the consistency in your game and your scorecard will improve massively. Finally, it is important to remember that each shot in golf represents a brand new opportunity to play well, so do not allow your past shots to define your future scorecard.

heila got home from her Sunday round of golf later than usual and was very tired. “Bad day at the course?” her husband asked. “Everything was going fine,” she said. “Then Moira had a heart attack and died on the 10th tee.” “Oh, that’s awful!” “You’re not kidding. For the whole back nine it was hit the ball, drag Moira, hit the ball, drag Moira.”
our favourite pics Natalie van Blerk – after teeing off, shows that she “possibly” hit her tee downwards to tee up a big clump of dirt on the top of the tee Our Editor – searching for her ball on the ground when it bounced into a lateral hazard….. was then to find it perched on the top of a bush. “Baseball Driver” invented shot ensued.

Golf teetimes for travellers

G
S
reat news for travellers who like to golf is that if they fancy a dream round at Pinnacle Point or other selected courses across South Africa, they can visit www.golfteetimes.co.za to secure a tee-time and save up to 60% on the cost of their rounds. The website provides golfers with the opportunity to play a variety of courses and is ideal for last minute types who don’t have time to phone around to find an opening. The site, which partners with courses in the Western Cape, KwaZulu-Natal, Gauteng and the Garden Route, is the first South African site to offer live tee booking at discounted rates - giving golfers the choice of where and when to play and at what price. lt went live in October 2010 and the growing number of courses listed includes Pinnacle Point, Randpark, Mowbray, Stellenbosch and Cotswold Downs. The website earns commission from the partner courses so golfers do not have to pay joining or booking fees. They simply pay the rate listed – irrespective of whether they belong to an affiliated club or are an overseas visitor. There is clearly a market for the service as the sister site in the UK contributed over £2 million in green fee revenue to golf clubs in 2009. So it’s great news for golfers and the many struggling golf courses across South Africa.

Tee Off for the Sanlam Cancer Charity Drive
outh Africa’s amateur golfers have thrown their support behind this year’s Sanlam Cancer Challenge, with golf clubs from around the country – from Springbok to Tweefontein to Silver Lakes – teeing off in this year’s Challenge. The primary aim of South Africa's largest amateur sporting event is to raise funds for the Cancer Association of South Africa through donations and entry fees paid by the golfers who participate in the event. This year nearly 2 600 golfers have already taken part in the 63 club competitions hosted around the country to date. And the members of Prince Albert Golf Club have already made an impact. “We are a small club and with only 10 members competing in this year’s Sanlam Cancer Challenge, we realised that the R600 entry fee would not help much in the pursuit of this year’s target,” explained Das Olivier, the former club secretary of Prince Albert Golf Club. “So we improvised.” The club initiated cake sales, an auction, individual donations and ticket sales to a dinner for 120 people and raised R13 000 for the fight against cancer. “Our wives baked and donated cakes, which were bought for up to R800 and then donated back to the auction,” Olivier explained. “Farmers donated anything from sheep to sausages. In fact, most of the food for the dinner was donated or sponsored, so our overheads were minimal.” The Sanlam Cancer Challenge annually draws tens of thousands of entrants and has contributed more than R23-million in the battle against cancer since 1993. “To me, the efforts of Prince Albert Golf Club epitomises the spirit of the Sanlam Cancer Challenge,” said Gary van Loggerenberg, Sanlam Sponsorship Manager. “The golfing community is one of CANSA’s strongest allies. The members at Prince Albert have not only set the bar for other golf clubs around the country, but they’ve shown how a community can pull together and join in the fight against cancer.” The 2010 Sanlam Cancer Challenge drew a total of 37 000 golfers and raised R2.5 million for CANSA. “We had approximately 800 club competitions and 32 regional finals,” said Van Loggerenberg. “We hope to both increase the number of entrants and exceed the R2.5 million raised last year.” The club competitions will run until the end of July and the winners will qualify for the regional finals, from August to September. The regional winners will travel to Sun City to compete in the 36-hole National Finals in October on the spectacular fairways of the Gary Player Country Club and Lost City Golf Course. Visit www.sanlamcancerchallenge.co.za, find a course near you and book to support this fantastic initiative.

AGTA is raising the flag for South African golf tourism across the world. The South African Golf Tourism Association’s (SAGTA) main goal is that of marketing South Africa as one of the world’s great golfing destinations both locally and internationally. It is the first time a national body has been created to represent the interests of an industry worth approximately R60bn globally per year – and with the support of South African Tourism, this bodes well for the success of SAGTA. One of the main drivers for the creation of the organisation was South Africa receiving Golf Destination of the Year 2011 for the African, Indian Ocean and Gulf States from the International Association of Golf Tour Operators (IAGTO) in Spain in November 2010 at the annual International Golf Travel Market. Thabiso Magodielo, Executive Director of Legend Lodges, Hotels & Resorts, is the Chairman of SAGTA and comments: “Despite South Africa being generally recognized by many as a great destination, the golf industry has never spoken with one voice, with one agenda under one banner – until now.
We are excited to unite and promote Golf Destination South Africa to bring in substantially more feet to our beautiful country.” South African Tourism is extremely positive about the formation of this organization and has given SAGTA their full support with attendance and presentation at both launches by Ian Utermohlen, Global Manager Marketing and Advertising. Utermohlen comments: “South African Tourism is absolutely delighted with the formation of SAGTA and very appreciative of the initiative, passion and drive shown by those in the South African golf fraternity who have brought this association to life. Our world-class golf offering is a major positive in this regard and the spontaneous formation of a body such as SAGTA is an invaluable addition to supporting our work in meeting the national tourism objectives. It is only with the support and expertise of all stakeholders in the golfing fraternity that we will continue to deliver excellence in golfing experiences. “ For more information or to join SAGTA, please visit the website on www.sagta.co.za or contact Natalie van Blerk from GEMC on natalievblerk@ gemcmarketing.co.za or 082 805 6643.

Laurette Maritz’s
11th Hole-In-One In 2011 On The 11th Hole at The ‘Turkish Ladies Open’
A
t the start of our 2011 ‘Ladies European Tour’ golf season, Laurette decided that one of her goals this year was to have her 11th hole-in-one. During the first round of the ‘Turkish Ladies Open’ on the 11th hole, Laurette hit a superb 5 iron that went STRAIGHT into the hole without a bounce!! Quite magnificent!! South African Laurette Maritz enjoyed an auspicious start when she made her 11th ever hole-in-one at the 147-yard par-three 11th hole. “At the beginning of the season
I said: 2011, number 11, but that was the last thing on my mind and I was just trying to make a good swing,” said Maritz, who made her last ace just before the 2008 Women’s World Cup of Golf. This time, she used a five-iron to hit the flag stick at full force before watching her ball disappear straight down the hole, without even touching the sides. The Ladies European Tour’s Chief Rules Official Marc Vande Broek remarked: “I’ve never seen a hole in one like that and I’ve seen quite a lot!

aving raised R542 870.05 in 2010 for the PinkDrive breast cancer initiative, Cloud9Golf, M-NET Cares and Liberty Medical Scheme have committed to the “Drive for the Cause” campaign in 2011. With education and breast cancer initiatives forming the core of all three companies, 2011 sees the birth of a 2nd initiative and with the support of the golfing community in South Africa and corporate companies, it is their collective goal to raise R1 000 000 this year. The 2010 campaign was a resounding success thanks to Cloud9Golf’s ongoing drive with various golf clubs hosting ambassador days; Cloud9Golf sponsors and partners as well as M-NET Cares and Liberty Medical Scheme. This great foundation has enabled the companies to set their sights on even
greater contributions in 2011, taking the M-NET Cares “Drive for the Cause” Campaign to new heights. Two beneficiaries have been chosen for 2011, namely the PinkDrive supporting Breast Cancer awareness as well as the M-NET Naledi Children’s Literacy project. Cloud9Golf have been involved in various fund raising initiatives throughout the years, collectively raising over R1 million since the company started in 2004. Gina Read, owner of Cloud9Golf comments: “We have supported a broad spectrum of charities and causes over the years that have been close to our hearts. For 2011 the Cloud9Golf team is fully behind the MNET Cares ‘Drive for the Cause’ breast cancer campaign as well as contributing to children’s education and our goal has been
set to raise R1 million in 2011 alone!” Cloud9Golf appeals to golfers to get involved and make a difference whilst playing the game they love! This can be achieved by encouraging your golf clubs or corporate company golf days to host a fun filled Ambassador Golf Day in 2011 and also enrolling in the National Final being played at Randpark Golf Club on 8 November 2011. Read comments, “Everyone can play their part in breast cancer awareness through Playing Golf, Spreading the Message and Driving for the Cause! ast year Marjet and Rory Young took over the reigns at the Livingstone Royal Golf & Country Club and the gracious Edwardian clubhouse, which dates back as far as 1908, is slowly but surely returning to its former glory. Situated about 20 minutes from the Victoria Falls, the club-house and the park land golf course began restoration work in 2005. Well known course designer Peter Matkovich redesigned the 18 hole par 72 course, which reopened in May 2007. Beautiful old trees border the fairways and greens and provide shade for the clubhouse.
In 1925 Prince Edward, then Prince of Wales, was also hosted by the Club. Marjet and Rory, whose grandfather was the first golf pro at the Livingstone Royal Golf Club, have added a gym and a pool to the complex, where regular aerobics, yoga and swimming classes take place. Tennis courts are in the final planning stages, along with a children’s animal farm on the spacious grounds. With Elephant Hills on the other side of the Falls, the area makes for a wonderful African golfing experience. For more information email: info@lrgcc.com.
In November 1910, His Royal Highness the Duke of Connaught and his wife Princess Louise Margaret of Prussia visited Livingstone. The Duchess of Connaught donated the Challenge Cup to the Club for the Mixed Foursome Competition. A few decades ago the clubhouse fell into disrepair and the Cup went missing, only to be returned recently by Moses Mwami, who worked as a caretaker for over 30 years and who took it upon himself to safeguard the Cup for all those years. It is now proudly displayed in the restaurant, together with 24 other historic cups and shields.
