WELCOME

A warm welcome awaits any visitor who wishes to come to a course with over 100 years of history, situated at the highest point in Blackpool with stunning views (on clear days!) of the Lake District Hills, the Bowland Fells, sunset over the Isle of Man and across to the hills of North Wales. Relax in the clubhouse after an enjoyable game and reflect on your round – it is possible to see every fairway, and no less than 17 of the 18 greens from the clubhouse windows - such was the brilliance of the course designer, one H S Colt.

We maintain and uphold the traditions of a club with such a chequered history, whilst moving into the modern era. The club offers 5, 6 or 7 day memberships whilst acknowledging the years of loyalty of our Seniors Section. Involved in the running of the club are a Club Managing Secretary, a Course Manager and the services of an in-house caterer and Professional. Our course is of such high quality as to have been used as an Open Qualifier, and has hosted the Lancashire Open for over 13 successive years. We have been chosen on numerous occasions

to hold major Charity Days, and welcome many regular returning . visiting societies. The Clubhouse is used for a wide variety of club functions, including the Summer, Winter and New Year’s Eve Balls, for the monthly entertainment nights, for kalooki, snooker and quiz evenings, and for members’ private celebration parties. We also invite outside visitors to use our facilities for presentations, for weddings, funerals and birthdays.

BLACKPOOL NORTH SHORE GOLF CLUB : 7

HISTORY

Blackpool North Shore Golf Club . was formed in 1904 following a . meeting called by Mr R H Mabbott, . a local hotelier. Mr Mabbott, together with a group . of like-minded individuals, identified . an area of 62 acres around The Knowle and found it to be suitable for a 9-hole golf course. Progress was fast, and at the first AGM one year later it was reported that the course was open, playing magnificently, had already been extended to 18 holes and had a membership of 250 gentlemen and 33 ladies. Arthur F. Reid,

a former Swiss Open champion, was named the club’s first professional. A thatched cottage in Cornwall Avenue was used as the first clubhouse, though a more permanent arrangement ensued with the building of the clubhouse at 62 Cornwall Avenue until a move to its present home in 1928. The old clubhouse is still in existence and used as a Deaf Institute, with its north-facing elevation originally opening up on to the 18th green. The club remained as a tenant to several landowners, the main one being John Stirling Ainsworth of Cleator, with

some parcels of land being sub-let to local farmers for grazing sheep and cattle. However, continued pressure to release more land for building as Blackpool grew in the early 1920s resulted in the epoch-making decision to construct a new course and clubhouse centred on the highest point in Blackpool on Knowle Hill. HS (Harry Shapland) Colt was chosen as the architect in preference to James Braid, at a fee of a mere £200, with construction budgeted to be £3,500, and a further £10,000 earmarked for the erection of our present day www.bnsgc.com

clubhouse. The new course opened . in 1927 and the clubhouse in July . of 1928. Colt was one of the leading designers of his day and there are many courses around the world that are lasting reminders of his genius, among them the New Course at Sunningdale, . Rye and the East and West Courses . at Wentworth. In his book “Some Essays on Golf Club Architecture,” he declared: “My course will endure a lasting record of my craft and my love of my work.” No-one at Blackpool North Shore Golf Club would

contradict those sentiments. During the Second World War most of the “back nine” was taken over for military purposes or for the growing of crops and sheep grazing. Blackpool Borough became the new landlords in 1926 to coincide with the construction of Devonshire Road, and the annual rent was set at £750. With various reviews and lease extensions this arrangement continued until the mid-1990s. The club then made the major decision to purchase the clubhouse and the surrounding land and to take on the course on a .

120-year lease at the price of £1 million, thereby securing the future of golf . at BNSGC. In 2004, we celebrated by becoming the 429th golf club in England to reach our centenary. Improvements have been made to the clubhouse since then as well into its second century North Shore strives to provide the best facilities both on the course and off for its members.

THE COURSE

The course at Blackpool North Shore . is among the best in the region and has in the past staged Open Championship qualifying when the tournament . proper has been held at Royal Lytham. It has also hosted the James Brearley Lancashire Open for more than . a decade. North Shore is a classic HS Colt design, using the natural contours and lie of the land to create a challenging but invigorating test for every standard . of golfer. When designing one of his masterpieces, Colt always held dear ten principles

from which he rarely deviated and our course is no different. These are:

5 Include a “blind approach shot at least once in the round.

1 There ought to be two starting points, both near to the Clubhouse.

6 The most interesting courses are of distances between 5,800 and 6,300 yards in length.

2 There must be one, and preferably two, putting greens adjacent to . the Clubhouse. 3 The first hole ought to be long, and fairly easy, in order to get players away from the first tee quickly and not hold up play. 4 There ought to be a strong finishing hole.

7 There ought to be four par-three holes. 8 It is preferable that each par 3 faces a different point of the compass. 9 There ought to be a good range of teeing grounds to vary hole lengths. 10 Par-4 holes ought always to be beyond the reach of a perfectlystruck long drive, so as to need a second shot to the green. www.bnsgc.com

BLACKPOOL NORTH SHORE GOLF CLUB : 13

Colt considered long grass to be a better hazard than cops, hedgerows and gorse and what we see today in the view from the Clubhouse as a “big field” is due to his particular desire to create a fair contest out on the course. The course measures 6,444 yards off the white medals tees and 6,318 from the visitors’ yellow tees, both to a par of 71, and 5,657 yards from the Ladies’ red tees (par 73). The Standard Scratch Score is identical to par no matter where you tee from, an indication of a very good all-round test of golf.

There is continual investment and total commitment here at North Shore . to provide the best golfing . experience possible. One such example has been the installation of a full greens tees and approaches irrigation system supplied through John Deere. This replaced the club’s previous ageing, and very basic, greens watering system and now extends to full tee irrigation as well as fairway approaches. This provides our Course Manager with the tools to further maintain and

improve the playing surfaces at . North Shore to his very high standards. So how best to enjoy your round and compile a scorecard to be proud of? Accuracy and a good short game is the key to scoring well, according to Andrew Richardson, the Club’s Professional. “I suppose the short game is key anywhere,” Andrew says. “But because we don’t have any trees or not too much water the rough is always quite long, and obviously it is challenging when it’s windy, as we are very exposed to the open bay”. www.bnsgc.com

BLACKPOOL NORTH SHORE GOLF CLUB : 17

“The greens are highly rated by the Pros who play here in the James Brearley Lancashire Open, they always comment on how good they are and how they are the best they have played on all year. They are always very quick and because they are undulating on certain holes and obviously with the wind factor as well they do become very tricky.” Everyone has their own favourite holes, for Andrew the par-3 7th and the . testing closing hole are among those . he most enjoys. Of the 7th, he says: “The actual direction of the hole heads towards the sea so

it’s always playing into the prevailing wind. It’s a par three that measures off the back tees 175 yards. Although it’s a downhill shot, the green is slightly raised like the old postage stamp at Troon. So you either hit the green or miss it into a bunker or down the bank and you’ve got a tough short game shot. It’s a very narrow green, very long, well protected by five deep bunkers. Playing from the 7th tee, the difference one day to the next may be as much as 5 clubs. It’s really challenging, depending on the . day you play it.”

As for the 18th: “It is a long par 4, all the way uphill and has two pits in front of the green (as the members fondly call them) and therefore if you don’t hit a good second shot you are in one of the pits and then can’t see the green or the top of the flag. Particularly if you have a good scorecard going it’s a tough finishing hole to make sure you finish that scorecard off. Many people playing that hole have had three or four shots in hand and then blown it. Even when you come over those pits you’ve got five bunkers protecting the green, for me it’s one of the hardest par fours in the area.” www.bnsgc.com

PRACTICE FACILITIES

Golfers looking to be the best players they can possibly be, need certain things. Talent never hurts, of course, but anyone with a grasp of the fundamentals can have realistic expectations of lowering their handicap. Tuition from a qualified instructor is essential to work on facets of the game that are proving problematical, but those words of wisdom can easily be forgotten if they are not ingrained so that they become second nature. Having been taught the theory, it is then down to the individual having the dedication to practise and access to

the facilities to be able to so. If you can supply the former, the latter is available in abundance to members of the club. There is a vast practice area in the middle of the course alongside the . 15th hole for working on the long game with the opportunity to hit from turf all year round. Short game practice is equally well catered for, with a chipping green about 30 yards from the clubhouse, just across the car park. Here it is possible to work on one’s game even in inclement weather, with an area of artificial turf protected by the roof of the

club’s academy providing some . cover from the elements. Bunker . shots can also be practised on to . the chipping green. There is an excellent putting green by the first tee and practice nets just to the right of the chipping green, perfect for those short of time looking to get warmed up before starting their round.

AFFILIATE MEMBERSHIP

Affiliate Membership is aimed at golfers who do not have an association with any particular golf club, but enjoy playing at various courses throughout the year. MEMBERS’ GOLF

The club currently has some 450 playing members, supplemented by juniors, affiliates and social categories, catering for those who want regular weekly competitions to experience . the thrill of winning and seeing their names on the board, to members who just want the occasional nine holes . with friends. In addition, social golf is available and in the summer, mixed greensomes, Texas scrambles and Club Days are organised which are very enjoyable and a little . less competitive.

The men tend to play their club competitions on a Saturday and the ladies on a Thursday and there are midweek competitions for all members to enter throughout the season. BNSGC teams play in the Scratch, Handicaps, Seniors and Junior Leagues against the other Fylde clubs. The Ladies compete against local clubs in the Scratch, Handicap, Bronze and Vets divisions. It is in these games that the EGU and LGU handicap system, monitored by our own computerised records by . the Handicaps Committee, makes .

for fair competition. The trophies on offer to club members, both male and female, during the season are numerous. One of the most noteworthy for men is the Scratch Medal, in effect a trophy for the Club Championship, which is played over . 36 holes.
