CHILTERN FOREST GOLF CLUB

perfect venue for societies and organisations looking to arrange a golf day. Whatever level of golfing experience you require, the club’s management committee and staff will make sure that every need is fully catered for. There is an active social side to Chiltern Forest, and our members are never short of entertainment with a wide variety of events being enjoyed at the club throughout the year. Our stunning setting and outstanding service are an enticing combination that makes us an

ideal location for functions such as weddings and birthday parties. On behalf of the management committee, members and staff, may I offer our warmest welcome. We all look forward to you enjoying your golf at what has been described as “The Jewel in the Chilterns”.

A BRIEF HISTORY 07 It is believed that golf was played on our land over 100 years ago, when most of the Halton area was owned by Alfred de Rothschild, one of the three fabulously wealthy brothers who settled in the area. At this time the course was just six holes.

the facilities required for a ‘proper’ golf club.

During 1984 the Club negotiated the purchase of additional land from the Forestry Commission - this land is now our 3rd, 13th, 14th, 15th and 16th holes. The ‘square’ (formed by the 2nd, Shortly after the First World War 6th, 4th and 12th holes) was the land was acquired by the developed to construct the 5th War Office as a training camp and 7th holes, and, importantly, for the fledgling RAF. During the land was generously donated by Second World War, the famous Mr Wren Stewart, our friendly professional Henry Cotton was neighbouring farmer and former stationed at RAF Halton and at this Club President. It was his land time he added three further holes that now provides our 10th and and made other improvements to 11th holes and without Wren’s the course. generosity, Chiltern Forest Golf Club could not have become an In the 1950s local residents were 18-hole course. allowed to play the course at a cost of 6d payable at the camp guardhouse before play. The number of locals playing gradually increased and eventually they formed their own club at the course. The first clubhouse was a modest affair consisting of a wooden hut just beside what is now the first tee. Its concrete base is still there and it gives an idea of its small size! In 1977 a new clubhouse was constructed, including changing rooms and all

A BRIEF HISTORY 09 On a hot July day in 1992 a Pro-Celebrity competition took place to mark the occasion, officially opening our course as 18 holes. After much discussion, work started in 1998 on extending the clubhouse. The new layout of the building includes a larger dining and lounge area, improved changing facilities, better catering area and a dedicated professional’s shop. Recent major works have included completely rebuilding the 18th green, which had a tendency to become waterlogged after prolonged rainfall. Two new bunkers have been installed to the right of the first green, one of which is a good earner for the Captain’s Charity! In 2006 there was major extension work to the greenkeepers’ facilities for improved storage and accommodation. The club and course are constantly improving and this remains the case with a rolling five-year plan. The course has certainly changed - the original Rothschild layout included a par-6 hole with the tee on the site of our present clubhouse and the hole finishing on the site of our first green.

PLAYING GOLF 11

CHILTERN FOREST GOLF CLUB

As a private members’ club, Chiltern Forest prides itself on catering for all golfing needs. Competitions are held on a regular basis for all our membership categories and abilities. In addition, we have a number of club teams playing both formal and informal

matches against other local clubs, including our men’s scratch side, men’s handicap side, ladies teams, and various mixed and senior matches. We are also proud of the fact that members can have access to the course without having to book a tee time. Coupled to the numerous “roll-ups” that occur throughout the week, it means that even on your own you will never struggle to find a partner for a game. In addition, our “Buddy” scheme for new members – where an existing member looks after a new member in his or her first few months – ensures that you will be fully welcomed and integrated into the club. Of course we are not a club that allows only members to play. We actively welcome the casual player and those who wish to arrange a society or corporate golf day. A range of green fees and society packages is available and you are encouraged to view either the separate section on societies, visit our website www.chilternforest.co.uk, or contact the secretary for details.

ABOUT OUR COURSE 13

Ranked as one of Buckinghamshire’s favourite courses, Chiltern Forest is definitely worth a visit. Although the course is only 5,760 yards long off the white tees, don’t be fooled! It plays every yard of that due to the hilly nature of the course. Try reaching the par 4 9th in two shots; your approach shot to the 16th green is all uphill, so you will need to carry it the whole way. Don’t think that you can merely take a driver and a short iron to the greens of our par 4s; if

you are off-line then the chances are you will playing your second shot sideways out of the trees. An enjoyable and challenging par 70, this is a true test of golf for players of all abilities, with stunning scenery to match. Our greenkeeping staff work hard to present a course that is in excellent condition throughout the year. We challenge you to find a better “year round” golf course in the area, as we are extremely fortunate to have a chalkbase soil that drains superbly in the wetter months, but retains moisture in the drier ones.

CHILTERN FOREST GOLF CLUB

The club’s commitment to continually improving the course is shown by our investment in the latest greenkeeping equipment and methods, and the continued improvement to our layout by our rolling development programme. Never satisfied with being outstanding, it is the never-ending pursuit of perfection that drives us and makes us the club of choice for the discerning golfer. We are sure that once you have experienced Chiltern Forest Golf Club you will agree that it is indeed a “Jewel in the Chilterns” and will be back to play it again and again.

A HAVEN FOR WILDLIFE 15 We have a huge variety of interesting plants and wildlife all over our course. Muntjac, a small species of deer originally imported from China as ornamental animals, can be frequently seen darting across some fairways, particularly the 4th and the 12th. Fallow deer can occasionally be sighted early in the morning. Three types of woodpecker are in abundance and pheasant frequently

wander the course. In May and June these fiercely territorial birds ‘face up’ to each other and provide a spectacular and noisy display. Many other species of birds are found, including the tiny Goldcrest, Britain’s smallest bird, and the rarely-seen Firecrest (well known in nearby Wendover Woods). During spring many of the banks are covered with primroses, which give way to cowslips and oxslips

CHILTERN FOREST GOLF CLUB

in May time. More importantly, there are many areas where pink and purple pyramid orchids exist - these flower in early June. Also the much rarer bee and fly orchids grow in certain areas. A glance down at your scorecard may not always give you that warm glowing feeling inside, but Mother Nature never disappoints!

TAKE THE COURSE TOUR 17

If you have never played Chiltern Forest before you are in for a treat. Make the most of your trip by learning about some of the pitfalls that lie in wait and how to avoid them as you follow our course tour courtesy of Simon Perks, our PGA Professional.

Hole 2 (Daniel’s Trudge) 355 yards, par 4 A great-looking hole across the valley. A tee shot up the left to leave an approach to a green that slopes towards you. Guard against hitting your ball past the flag as this will leave you a quick putt back.

Hole 1 (The Cornfield) 253 yards, par 4 An easily reachable par 4 for the aggressive tee shot. But danger lurks with three well-placed bunkers and a green that runs away from you. The ideal play is to play short and rely on a chip and a putt.

Hole 3 (Deer Crossing) 170 yards, par 3 A super par 3 where a shot to the right will filter the ball back onto the green. Beware of the left side as the ball will finish in the forest if the green is missed.

CHILTERN FOREST GOLF CLUB

Hole 4 (The Beeches) 476 yards, par 4 A good par 5 where a tee shot on the left half of the fairway will gather right. This will leave you with the option of either a lay up guarding against the bunkers protecting the green or attack the flag. Hole 5 (Mentmore) 313 yards, par 4 A good short par 4 where finding the fairway is a must. This will leave an approach to a bunkerless raised green that is subtly undulating.

TAKE THE COURSE TOUR 19 Hole 6 (Dingle’s Dell) 306 yards, par 4 A good birdie chance where the brave can drive the green but beware, as the forest lurks for the wayward. The other option is to play short and wedge onto a difficult green. Hole 7 (The Yews) 341 yards, par 4 A tricky dog leg that doesn’t really pay to be too long off the tee. The ideal line is to hug the trees to the left and let the ball use the slope to find the centre of the fairway. This will leave a downhill approach where over the green is not where you want to go.

Hole 8 (The Badger) 160 yards, par 3 A steeply uphill par 3 to a postage stamp of a green. Play plenty of club for your tee shot as this hole plays far longer than the yardage suggests. Hole 9 (Aston Hill) 424 yards, par 4 A drive to the left of the bunker will leave a long approach to a green that slopes from right to left. This is a long par 4 that will, most of the time, play as a par 5.

CHILTERN FOREST GOLF CLUB

Hole 10 (Stewart’s Field) 379 yards, par 4 A straightforward downhill par 4 where you need to guard against the out of bounds to the left. This will leave a shot where you can either pitch short and run it in or pitch it up if you are feeling brave. Hole 11 (Donkey Field) 313 yards, par 4 There are two option for this tee shot, either play to the left side of the fairway and the ball will run right, or the bigger hitters will have a go at the green, which is below and behind the large tree in the centre.

TAKE THE COURSE TOUR 21

Hole 13 (Long Covert) 354 yards, par 4 A good drive up the left-hand side will open the raised two-tier green up for a second shot that will play little longer than the yardage. The trees to the right of the green have a habit of grabbing and pulling your ball into them, so beware! Hole 14 (The Firs) 355 yards, par 4 Hole 12 (The Warren) Your drive doesn’t need to be too 536 yards, par 5 long as the fairway runs away from A great par 5 that plays a little longer you and narrows the further you than the yardage suggests. Be aware hit it. The green slopes from front that the green slopes from right to to back so be careful not to play left and can leave an impossible putt too short. The back of the green is if positioned wrongly. a good option.

CHILTERN FOREST GOLF CLUB

Hole 15 (Forest Walk) 120 yards, par 3 A good short par 3 where, as at the last, the green slopes from front to back. So again, the back of the green is a good plan of attack. Hole 16 (O’er The Top) 374 yards, par 4 A tough par 4 where the best option is to position your ball on the fairway approximately level with the lone tree on the righthand side. Be aware of the out of bounds to the left. This will leave a difficult blind uphill shot to the green with a lone bunker well to the right.

TAKE THE COURSE TOUR 23

Hole 17 (Cotton’s Folly) 216 yards, par 3 A really tough par 3 where sometimes a bogey is a good score. You will need to hug the bank on the left with your tee shot, hoping it won’t get stuck there. The green slopes from left to right. The bunker is not the place where you want to play from.

Hole 18 (High Green) 315 yards, par 4 You can either take on the bunker on the left, but the better option is to lay up short and to the right side of the split-level fairway. This will leave an approach to a long, raised green where club selection is all important.

TUITION 29

CHILTERN FOREST GOLF CLUB

With a greater understanding of your strengths and weaknesses you can better assess how to realise your own potential and enjoy the personal satisfaction that comes from its achievement. Goal-setting in golf, as in life, can be richly rewarding. Our professional staff are available seven days a week for individual or group lessons for all ages and abilities. We offer simple, easy-to-understand instruction tailored to the individual player’s needs, with video available if required. We deliver top advice on technique and, importantly, course management to players of all standards. Golf can be a difficult game to master, you only have to watch the touring pros on television that play the game for a living to have this view confirmed. What chance, then, the casual player who has so many other demands on his or her time? It may not be possible to break par on a regular basis, but professional tuition, combined with dedication and practice, can lead to a significant improvement in performance.

At Chiltern Forest we are keen to encourage younger players to take up the game and Simon Perks, our head professional, offers a tailored package of lessons at discounted rates, which teaches youngsters all aspects of the game; chipping, pitching and putting, driving, iron shots plus course etiquette. For more information or to speak to our professional staff call the Pro Shop on 01296 631267 (option 2).

PRACTICE FACILITIES 31 Excellent instruction is nothing without the facilities to put those newly-learnt skills into action, working on them until they become second nature. Here, again, Chiltern Forest scores highly for the conscientious golfer looking to maximise their potential and lower their handicap to become the best they can possibly be. The club’s practice facilities are open to members and those taking lessons at the club. There is a pitching green of around 130 yards close to the second tee where members can take their own balls and work on their wedge game.

The green next to the car park beside the first tee is available for practising short chip shots. It also has a practice bunker, perfect for those who wish to incorporate the words “sand save” into their golfing vocabulary. There is an excellent putting green located right outside the Pro Shop which is perfect for familiarising yourself with the speed of the greens so you don’t have to worry about those costly three-putts during your round.

CHILTERN FOREST GOLF CLUB

For those who find time is at a premium, there are two practice net close to the chipping green, affording the opportunity to warm up before beginning a round.

SPIRIT OF COMPETITION 39 The ability to test one’s prowess in the sporting arena against one’s peers is for many one of the principal reasons in joining a club. Chiltern Forest fully satisfies on that score (as it does in many other facets) by providing numerous competitions throughout the year. Play against other clubs, play against friends, play for silverware, play for fun, the opportunities are boundless. Play as much as you choose and learn about your golf game (and your character!) in pressure situations. Here is a taste of what is on offer to members: Men • Monthly Medals: Every month there is at least one qualifying competition; Stableford format in the winter months, November to March - strokeplay format April to October. • Majors: These are seasonal pairs competitions, e.g. Spring or Summer Prize and Clubhouse Trophy. They are played using different formats, such as foursomes, greensomes and sometimes better-ball Stableford.

• Knockout Match Play: There are several summer singles knockout competitions for different categories of handicap. From October to April there is a Winter League pairs knockout. • Club Matches: A chance to play against other clubs in the area, both home and away. • Non-Diary Competitions: If you fancy a less formal game, there are various morning “swindle” groups. The most popular is the one on Saturday (and Sunday) mornings. A great chance to meet others and cards are drawn to ensure a good mix. • Seniors: Over 55s meet every Tuesday and Thursday mornings. Once a month they run a medal for handicap purposes. All are welcome, regardless of age. Ladies • Monthly Medals/Stablefords: Ladies have LGU medal (strokeplay) and Stableford competitions throughout the year. They take place on Mondays and Saturdays.

LADIES’ SECTION 41

The Ladies’ Section at Chiltern Forest is a friendly, active group of ladies of all ages, who enjoy their golf and who play regularly in competitions, matches, mixed events and socially. They also enjoy the opportunities to get together and make good use of the club’s catering facilities. At Chiltern Forest, unlike many other clubs, ladies’ competitions take place on both Saturdays and Mondays, so ladies with work or family commitments can always get a competitive round of golf. Monthly medals and monthly

Stablefords are played on both Saturdays and Mondays, and the majority of the numerous major competitions also take place on Saturdays, including the Ladies Championship - a 36-hole event played over Saturday and Sunday. Additionally, we have various knock-out and eclectic competitions which can take place at any time. In addition to our formal competitions, there are ‘roll-ups’ on Saturdays and Mondays when there is no competition scheduled. There are also league fixtures against

CHILTERN FOREST GOLF CLUB

other clubs. At Chiltern Forest the opportunity to play for your club is always there - there is no ‘elite’ squad and if you volunteer to play you will have a good chance of being selected. We are very welcoming to new members so, if you are thinking about joining a golf club in the area, contact the General Manager, Neil Clayton (01923 631267), . and arrange to come and see the course and meet a member of the Ladies Committee.

JUNIOR GOLFERS 42 The benefits of golf to young people are many. It can result in the forging of new friendships, fuel a sporting passion that can last a lifetime or even bring out physical or mental attributes that have previously gone undiscovered. At Chiltern Forest, we know our juniors are our senior members of the future and without them we would ultimately have no club. For this reason we champion our

younger players and this is an area which we are actively looking to promote and grow over the coming years. Juniors can benefit from very attractive membership rates and with Simon Perks, our Head PGA Golf Professional, you could not be in better hands. Simon runs one-to-one and group coaching for juniors and is the perfect person to help young golfers get the most

from their game. Junior improvement programmes can be created to suit the needs and aspirations of each individual and there are also beginner classes aimed at teaching children the basics to enable them to get out and enjoy the game as quickly as possible.
