Top tips For intelligent selling
Four senses People like to see it, smell it, taste it, or touch it before they buy it. We understand that it can sometimes be hard to sell the duty free from the carts, but you do have opportunities to up sell. It’s good to think about the customers senses to help them make a decision. 28

Smell
We all know that customers get to see visual delight that is our brochure, but they might also want to see the physical product in front of them. Most of the items we sell onboard are in boxes where the product is displayed through a window. For example most of our jewellery items have windows in which people can see the item before they buy it. Jewellery items cannot be opened for customers to try on. This is because some have multiple parts which can go missing which causes damage to the product. A cart top display is also a lovely way to draw customers to our products and let them know that the duty free service has started.
As you probably know, we can’t let customers smell the perfume as this means damaging the product. At our product roadshows we like to display samples of every fragrance we sell so crew can smell them. We also give out small samples for you to take with you. Next time, make sure you take some to keep in your crew bag so that you can let customers smell them onboard to help them make their decision. It is also good to try and describe the scent, for example “This fragrance is floral and sweet”, or “This one is a spicy fragrance that lasts long on the skin”.
Taste
Touch
This one is quite difficult to achieve but one thing that would work is alcohol. Think of the alcohol and spirits we offer in the brochure. Some of these are also available to drink on the flight during the drinks service. Why not let the customer know that we sell it onboard whilst you are serving them their drink? This gives them the tasting experience and might prompt them to buy a bottle.
There are items that customers do have the chance to touch and try on. It is ok for you to open watches and sunglasses as customers are not likely to buy these items before they try them on first.
