Welcome To Wrangaton Golf Club We are a friendly club on the southern slopes of Dartmoor in glorious Devon, unique for being truly a course of two halves.
hedgerows and dense woodland ... it really is like playing two courses for the price of one.
The front nine is very much a moorland setting, with fabulous views of Dartmoor and across typically lush countryside to the sea, just 10 miles away. There are no bunkers or trees on this part of the course, unlike the back nine, which is real parkland, with fairways hemmed in by

We are pleased to discuss any queries or suggestions, and look forward to seeing you very soon.
Although it is a members club, run by the members for the
Wrangaton Golf Club I Welcome I 5
History One of the oldest golf clubs in Devon, Wrangaton was founded in 1895 and is situated on the southern slopes of Dartmoor, between Ivybridge and South Brent, in the parish of Ugborough.
covered in thick gorse and bracken, which was cleared using scythes, while rocks were removed from the fairways. Founding members paid ÂŁ1 in annual subs, or ÂŁ1 and 10 shillings for families.
Originally known as South Devon Golf Club, it adopted the name Wrangaton in 1922.
Before the clubhouse was built visitors to the original nine-hole course would sign in at a small shed where they would leave money in an honesty box. There was also a hitching rail where players could tether their horses, and in 1938 fences were erected around the greens to protect the putting surfaces from grazing
The land was given by Elizabeth and Beatrice Carew after it was inherited by them from their father, Sir Walter Palk Carew, a local landowner. In 1895 the moorland was
ponies, cattle and sheep. An additional nine parkland holes were opened in 1991, making the unique 18-hole course of today. Wrangaton has been a challenge of character and patience to the golfer since its earliest days, and it does help to have a sense of perspective ... plus a sense of humour, of course, as it can be difficult on cold and windy days, as well as a sheer joy when the sun is out and the scenery is simply stunning to behold.
Wrangaton Golf Club I History I 7
Playing Golf At Wrangaton This is a unique experience, for a number of reasons. There’s the location, for a start, at the edge of Dartmoor, which means the golf course encompasses the rugged moorland and also the “in-country” surrounding it, so playing at Wrangaton really does give you the best of both worlds. On your way around the course you will see the bleak granite landscape with its many famous tors and the contrasting typically English pastoral scenes of the Devon countryside. Then in the near distance you’re
reminded of the beaches where holidaymakers flock every year to sample the sub-tropical microclimate of the English Riviera. The flora and fauna add to the experience, with sheep and the occasional Dartmoor pony roaming the course, and the stunning scenery ever-changing according to the seasons. And every single round of golf here involves two distinctly different challenges, from the more open moorland stretch to the much tighter parkland loop, where accuracy is essential.
It’s a course that’s playable for pretty much everyone, but also somewhere that will almost certainly help you become a better player because of the different challenges that it presents. Visitors come back time and again not just for the views, fine food or friendly welcome (although all these things count for a lot) ... but also because they want to master the course, a feat which can be eminently achievable when the weather is good, yet is so much more satisfying when the wind gets up.

About Our Course There are tougher tests of golf, although there are also many courses that will seem like a stroll in the park after you’ve played Wrangaton.
you surely don’t want to spend valuable time looking for your ball in knee-deep rough, or constantly hitting provisionals as your tee shots find trouble.
But we doubt very much you’ll find anywhere that’s as enjoyable as our little piece of paradise in the beautiful Devon countryside.
Wrangaton is what a good golf course ought to be ... challenging yet fair.
After all, who wants to spend their golfing life slogging round an ultra-long championship course that’s set up for the pros?
Play well and you’ll probably score well. Play less well, however, and you’ll still come off the last green with a smile on your face.
It may be all right for the players you see on TV (although even sometimes they struggle), but
Golf at its best is about many things ... healthy rivalry, sporting behaviour, spending time in the
fresh air, exercise and, most of all, enjoyment. We believe, and so do our hundreds of satisfied members, that Wrangaton is a testing yet thoroughly enjoyable golf course ... we hope you’ll agree.
Wrangaton Golf Club I About Our Course I 11
Haven For Wildlife It is thought that Dartmoor sheep have been part of this fantastic landscape since prehistoric times. There are two native breeds, White Face and Greyface, but the most common is the Scotch Blackface. The Dartmoor pony, the symbol of the National Park Authority, is a hardy breed, easily identifiable by its relatively small head, large
wide-set eyes, alert ears and strong, stocky build. Dartmoor ponies are not entirely wild. Although they are free to roam wherever they wish, all ponies on Dartmoor are owned and protected by Dartmoor Commoners. Should you meet one on your way round the golf course, remember it is illegal to feed them.
The ponies are blessed with excellent stamina and over the centuries have been used as working animals, literally beasts of burden for local tin miners and quarry workers. This part of Devon is famous for its flora as well as its fauna. In spring, look out for primroses and daffodils, then violets and bluebells slightly later in the

season. In summer it’s the wild flowers that bring colour, and in the autumn there’s ling and heather brightening up not just the golf course but surrounding fields, the “in-country” that skirts the rugged moor. Wrangaton Golf Club, which celebrated its centenary in
1995, owns the land on which the course lies, although the moorland nine lies within Dartmoor National Park (founded in 1951) and the club has granted right of way for walkers and riders to cross the fairways to gain access to the beautiful moor beyond.
Non-golfers like to say the game is a good walk spoiled ... they’re completely wrong, of course, but here at Wrangaton the walk is very much an added bonus.

16 I Take the Course Tour I Wrangaton Golf Club
Take The Course Tour Hole One (par 4, index 16, 303 yards from the white tees) An inviting first shot off the tee to ease you in is followed by a second requiring precision ... anything left, long or short will make it difficult to score par, while anything on the green right of the pin means a tricky two-putt. Hole Two (par 4, index 4, 386 yards) Often played into the prevailing wind, there’s a stream in front of the long green for added difficulty. You’ll need two good shots to reach in regulation, so if you’re not that long off the
tee you may decide to lay up just short for a pitch and putt.
and the slope should take your ball back to the pin.
Hole Three (par 4, index 10, 364 yards) With out of bounds all down the left, and a fairway that slopes from the right, you’re best advised to aim right off the tee ... and then again when you’re going for a green with a slope that side which carries the ball down towards the hole.
Hole Five (par 4, index 8, 363 yards) Accuracy is essential on this relatively short but tricky hole. From the elevated tee you’ll see out of bounds and water left ... and gorse right. The green is guarded by water front and right, so make sure to take enough club.
Hole Four (par 3, index 18, 164 yards) Statistically the easiest hole on the course, but it’s uphill so you may want to club up by one, or maybe two. Aim left of the flag
Hole Six (par 4, index 2, 348 yards) Uphill all the way, the secondhardest hole may not look long on paper, but it requires two lusty blows and a degree of accuracy,

with a fairway sloping down to a stream on the left. There are great views from a green which is tricky and slick if you’re putting downhill.
is essential with trouble lying in wait both left and right. Aim to leave your second short so you’re not faced with a difficult downhill putt.
Hole Seven (par 4, index 12, 431 yards) Soak in the breathtaking scenery of the South Hams from the tee, then allow for the sloping fairway and left to right green, maybe taking one club less than you think for the approach shot.
Hole 11 (par 5, stroke 3, 514 yards) Look out for the old quarry on the right of the fairway. Get a good drive away and expect a tough decision ... do you go for a narrow green with a tight entrance, or lay up short of the second hedge and then pitch up and putt out for par?
Hole Eight (par 5, index 6, 506 yards) A difficult par four from the yellows, but a five-shot challenge for most from the white and ladies’ tees. Aim for the middle of the fairway ... and the right part of the two-tier green, or else you’ll be facing a tricky putt or two ... or even more. Hole Nine (par 4, index 14, 308 yards) The tee shot from an elevated tee is a welcoming one, not least for the wonderful views. Long hitters may reach the green, but mere mortals should aim to land their pitch on the front half, and avoid the little pond to the left. Hole 10 (par 4, index 13, 299 yards) A gentle par four, but accuracy
Hole 12 (par 3, index 9, 212 yards) A lovely downhill par three, quite straightforward really, but overshooting the green may make it hard to get up and down. Hole 13 (par 4, index 15, 302 yards) A short par four with out of bounds right and a green with subtle borrows that is one of the quickest on the course. Hole 14 (par 3, index 7, 204 yards) Probably the hardest par three, with trouble all around, most of it short of the green, so make sure to take enough club, even
though that will most likely leave you with a testing downhill putt. Hole 15 (par 4, index 1, 413 yards) After a bracing uphill walk to the tee, prepare yourself for the hardest hole at Wrangaton. It’s uphill, so for most will play more like a par five, with lots of trouble around the green and a quick green with a big break. Hole 16 (par 4, index 11, 361 yards) There’s danger either side of the fairway, so once again it’s important to be accurate off the tee. If you are, though, and don’t get too greedy, this is one of the most likely birdie opportunities. Hole 17 (par 3, index 17, 127 yards) A nice little par three, which plays to its true length, this is another birdie chance, with the only real problems being bunkers short left and right. Hole 18 (par 4, index 5, 388 yards) This tough closing hole can be a real card-wrecker in competitions. It’s uphill, and you will have to reload if you go too far right. Once again, the putting surface is slick, so it’s best to hit the right part of the green.

Pro Shop Stuart Barrett, our PGA Professional, formerly at Dartmouth Golf and Country Club, has been with us for nearly two years now, while Pro Shop Assistant Andy Searle, a Level One golf coach, has been a member at Wrangaton for 16 years, since he was 10, and has worked in the pro shop for the past 10 years. The shop stocks products from most of the leading manufacturers at very competitive prices, with demo clubs in most current ranges, so you can try before you buy. We offer to price match on certain items and deal with leading brands such as Wilson, Footjoy, Titleist and Mizuno. All your golfing requirements can be found here ... and if you cannot find what you are looking for, we can usually supply your needs within two to three working days. What adds to the retail therapy, though, is the expert knowledge
that Stuart and Andy can offer ... they know the game inside out, and they can help you decide what’s best for you. Wrangaton also has a well-fitted workshop, inside the teaching facility, where we can carry out repairs to damaged clubs or adjust clubs to suit your swing, again at very competitive prices.
ball markers, sun protection (this is Devon after all), socks, soft drinks and chocolate bars to sustain you on the way round our wonderful course. The pro shop is open seven days a week year-round, and nonmembers are very welcome.
Whether your clubs need regripping or re-shafting, or whether you want an expert to check your lofts and lies using the latest technology, this is the place to come. If you need your clubs regripped, or that trusty old seveniron needs a new shaft, please visit the pro shop and our team will look to complete the job within 24 hours. But a good pro shop is about much more than offering the right kit or repairs. Bags, gloves, trolleys, shoes, clubs and clothes (including wet weather gear) are all important, but we think of the little things too, like tee pegs,

Practice Facilities One of the best things about being a member of a golf club is the knowledge that you can nip along whenever you feel like it and work on improving your game. The practice facilities at Wrangaton include an area where you can hit longer shots and work on your driver and long irons ... it’s always a satisfying feeling to see a ball arc against the sky, soaring through the air into the far distance. But remember the old saying
“drive for show, putt for dough”, so you may want to spend more time on the putting green, perfecting those tricky little fourfooters ... after all, whether you hit the ball 300 yards or three inches, it still counts as one shot. And there’s also an area where you can fine-tune your chipping and bunker play. You’ll be amazed at how quickly your handicap will fall once you master the short game ... if you can get up and down from the edge of the green instead of
leaving your ball snagged in the rough stuff the number of shots it takes you to get round will simply fall away. Also try to picture yourself making a “sandy save”, playing out of the bunker, getting the ball close to the pin and then holing the putt. You can do it if you really want to ... as the great Gary Player (or was it, as some claim, Arnold Palmer?) said: “It’s strange, the more I practise, the luckier I get.”

This is a great way to meet people and improve your game. It is also important to play the game in the right way and the right spirit, and by taking part in competitions you will learn not only to play by the rules (there aren’t that many, and most are simply common sense) but also about the etiquette of golf.
Competitions include Strokeplay, where the total number of shots you take makes up your score; Stableford, where you score points depending on your handicap and the degree of difficulty of the various holes; and Matchplay, where you and a partner will compete against another pair.

Golf For All Some golf clubs don’t particularly welcome women, others might look down on youngsters ... but not here at Wrangaton, where everyone is welcome. There are around 500 members, including a vibrant Veterans (over 55) section, with about 50 regulars, a strong Juniors set-up, for any budding Tiger Woods (and Annika Sorenstams) out there, and a thriving Ladies section. The different sections have their own regular competitions, offering members the opportunity to play competitively with people
from their own peer group. This is especially good for newer members as it helps put them at ease, as their playing partners will share similar experiences and lend a sympathetic ear out on the course and over lunch back in the comfort of the clubhouse. There is at least one competition every weekend throughout the main season, but there are also roll-ups every Wednesday throughout the year, which means that members can meet new people and strike up new friendships ... roll-ups really are
the perfect way to combine the social and competitive sides of the sport. And as well as playing against each other within their various sections, members at Wrangaton also get plenty of opportunities to mix, with men and women and young and not so young getting together either out on the course or in the clubhouse ... the game truly is a great leveller, where the different generations and genders meet on equal terms and no one is judged on what they do or where they come from.

Bar & Catering Catering manager Chrissy Paine has been at Wrangaton for 12 years, and works alongside her entrusted team. They prepare home-made and home-cooked food and, as keen golfers themselves, know just what golfers want when they come in off the course. The clubhouse is famous far and wide as a friendly place, where good food doesn’t cost a fortune and fine dining is invariably accompanied with conversation and laughter. The daily specials board is a popular feature and usually includes popular dishes such as cottage pie, curry, fish and chips and traditional Sunday roast lunches. Maybe you’re in a hurry or not that hungry? The menu also features lighter meals or snacks, including baguettes, soups and sandwiches. If the weather’s chilly, then Chrissy will probably cook up a warming, filling stew ... and the club stocks a variety of beers and
guest ales, not least from the local St Austell Brewery. The Conservatory Restaurant looks out over the beautiful South Hams landscape, making it the perfect place for post-round relaxation for members, guests and visitors alike. It’s also ideal for a traditional golfer’s breakfast, or a quiet coffee with friends. Chrissy says she enjoys going to work each and every day (“It’s such a beautiful place to be, and the people here are so friendly”), a view that’s shared by her very many satisfied customers ... and members at neighbouring golf clubs who always look forward to playing at Wrangaton, not just because of the quality golf course but also the top-quality post-match meals. Social Functions We have an active social scene at Wrangaton, with regular events such as the legendary quiz nights, hosted by secretary/ manager Bob Clark, who joined the club in August 2008, and manages the staff and all aspects of the day to day running of the club. Bob plays golf at Wrangaton as often as time allows, and is more than happy to discuss special offers for societies, green fees for visitors and how to become
a member, plus corporate and charity day opportunities. The club is popular with members as a venue for birthday or anniversary parties, and Christmas is always a special time at Wrangaton, when everyone dresses up to the nines ... it can be quite a shock when you’ve spent all year seeing someone wearing a woolly hat and waterproof trousers to suddenly bump into them on the dance floor in their very finest finery.
Make new friends, or spend quality time with your best mates ... golf is a very sociable game, and Wrangaton is proud to be a friendly and social place. It’s not stuffy or exclusive, but warm and inclusive, as all the best golf clubs are ... what happens out on the course is an important part of belonging to a golf club, but the après-golf is what makes it even more special.
