his is the season where classic designs team up with modern cuts and bold new details. Suits regain their deserving status in your wardrobe while taking on a new persona with modernized trims and details. Plaid is back – whether in small or large-taking center stage in suit fabrics while stylized floral prints bolster the shirts. Earth tones in a range of colors, grays and dark blue tones that channel navy dominate the color palette of the new season. The hero piece this year is definitely the coat. Long or short, wool and cashmere coats come in camel and teal colors; sometimes even in a herringbone pattern. Turtlenecks replace shirts inside jackets and dress coats as the popular choice, leading the way to a more relaxed look as temperatures drop. Enjoy the same relaxed attitude as shoes and boots with thicker rubber soles, beanie hats and caps remain as popular as ever. Once again, Sayki elegantly interprets all the seasonal trends for the active, modern gentleman who likes to travel and live a fashionable lifestyle. Inspired by the timeless style of the urban dresser, the collections highlight microprints in plaid and herringbone while offering a wide variety of monochromatic options. Another collection is inspired by the street and brings color and other street style codes into your wardrobe-if being the center of attention is your preference, we won’t disappoint. Finally, your evening look will be inspired by the 70s style dress jackets, with even the simplest cuts feature prominent design details. Our travel pages take us to Japan in this issue where we uncover the culinary delights of Kyoto. We’re sure you’ll want to add this rising star on your bucket list for places to visit. We wish you a season filled with style and travel.

DO YOU KNOW THESE WINTER SPORTS?

They’re dazzling to watch but some of these winter sports are quite obscure—in fact their names a mystery to the most of us.

Curling

Played in an ice rink that is 42 meters long and 4.3 meters wide, curling is a sport in which players slide stones on ice with the help of their special shoes and brooms. The goal is to have two teams, each with four players, compete against each other for the highest score while sliding granite stones that each weigh 19.96 kilograms. The players use strategic and hurried broom strokes curling the stone to the end line and try to accomplish this in 10 rounds. Invented by the Scottish, curling dates back to the 16th century and won Olympic sport status in 1924. It is also known as chess on ice due to its strategic moves necessary for the win.

Fast and easy

Thanks to the Nonda Zus HD, you can now bring your own music into any car, regardless of model or make. Whether you subscribe to a popular music service or carry around your personal collection, you can blast your own tunes through the car speakers either with a USB or Bluetooth connection. Skeleton is an individual winter sliding sport in which a person rides small sled down a frozen track while lying face down. Originating at an 1882 sledding course in Switzerland, the sport was popularized quickly and recognized as an Olympic sport in 1926. One of the key restrictions of skeleton is that the athlete can’t warm up the metal blades prior to sledding in order to increase speed. The key requirement is that the competitor has to be on the skeleton fully when crossing the finish line.

Biatlon

The sleigh race where teammates make timed runs down narrow, twisting iced tracks is called bobsled or bobsleigh. Teams of four compete inside a 3,8 meter sleigh that weighs 220 kilograms while teams of two choose 2.7 meter sleighs that weigh 160 kilograms. In addition to the high-tech sleigh, the required equipment includes a helmet, protective goggles, kneepads and elbow pads. The teammates have to work in harmony before and during takeoff in order to ensure that they don’t rock the sleigh too much and hurt their speed.

Biathlon is a winter sport that combines cross-country skiing and rifle shooting. Rooted in the military traditions of 18th century Scandinavia, today’s biathlon games include individual, sprint, relay, pursuit and mass start divisions. All taking place on crosscountry skiing tracks, the competition values speed as well as accuracy in shooting. Established as an Olympic sport in 1960 for men and 1992 for women, biathlon is also now a summer sport where cross-country skiing is replaced with cross-country running.

FROM THE BIG SCREEN TO THE CITY STREETS

Leading busy lives colored with bright lights, cameras, thriving businesses and relationships, these screen stars prefer key pieces from the Sayki Collection to customize their personal style. RYAN SERHANT OLIVER TREVANA

We caught up with Oliver Trevana on the streets of New York, steps away from the Sayki store on Madison Avenue. Having just wrapped filming The Rising Hawk, an action movie about the Mongolian advance on the Carpathian mountains set in the 13th century, the famous British actor and host was captured by Hollywood photographer Randall Slavin, whose worked has appeared in magazines like Vanity Fair and GQ. Dressed head to toe in the upcoming Sayki Collection, Trevana is best known for having interviewed hundreds of celebrities and musicians for Young Hollywood, The Hollywood Report and JustJared.com. While he was originally trained as an actor and continues to act in movies, dividing his time between Los Angeles and the UK, he says he was literally pushed on to the red carpet to interview a celebrity one day and has not stopped ever since. On this busy actor’s bucket list: taking a trip to space!

Ryan Serhant has discerning taste. And it is this taste that makes him stand out among other real estate agents in the highly competitive luxury market in New York City. Like Trevana, Serhant was also trained as an actor and started his career in New York on the popular daytime drama As the World Turns. Now he’s the star of Bravo Channel’s Million Dollar Listing New York and has proven that success is earned with hard work, and not simply achieved. Fans of the show celebrated when Serhant married Emilia Bechrakis, who now appears on the show with him, and are now questioning the charming couple about how they plan to grow their family. Recently, Serhant appeared on the cover of Resident magazine in a blue Sayki suit and answered questions not only about his successful career and but also his thoughts on having children.

Trends

A LOOK AT THE SEASON One of the most important trends in the 2018-19 Fall/Winter season is the return of knit layers and faux fur details. Strong plaids and abstract florals are the trends in prints that stand out. Wool pants are a wardrobe staple this Fall/Winter season, while shoes maintain thick soles, and heads, caps and knit hats. Floral prints take on an abstract role this winter. Monochrome transitions affect the way flowers and leaf forms are stylized and showcased in prints. In certain instances, the outcome is a marbleized look-especially when the abstract print is in the trendy gray and earth tones of the season.

The plaid is extremely versatile-both at home on the Scottish highlands, as well as in punk rock. Featured in both small and large prints this season, the plaid has one important rule: don’t mix them up. If you’re pairing plaid with another color/texture, try and pick pieces in solids, without competing prints. That way your favorite plaid will have a chance to shine.

Automobile Singer 911

THE BEST OF THE CO OL CAR REPLICAS AND REPRODUCTIONS

Based On: Air-Cooled Porsche 911 The Skinny: The air-cooled 911s were the original Porsches that garnered love and affection the world over. Unlike many of the companies whose wares grace this list, Singer doesn't make bodies for modern parts, they tune existing cars to the point of perfection. Everybody who has driven a Singer 911 has given it rave reviews.

The car that is currently in your garage may very well be the last one you drive that is fuel-powered. In fact, you might have already transitioned into a fully electric car. Our future is filled with electric or other fuel-alternative cars—we may not even be steering the wheel soon as self-driving cars become the norm.

30

At the same time, many of us feel something when we see a classic car, often hoping that we could be the one driving it down the highway with its top down. Then again classic cars are not only expensive, especially when they achieve antique status, but they are also difficult to maintain, often leading to costly repairs with difficult to find parts. You want a stylish ride—we get it. Why not, then, drive something that looks like a vintage Ferrari or Porsche instead of having to pay a fortune for one?

Cal Spyder II

Based On: 1958 Ferrari 250 GT California Spyder The Skinny: The famous John Hughes character Ferris Bueller made the California Spyder famous for a generation of fun-loving young men but the current vintage price tag hovers around $10.4 million, not an easy purchase to stomach. Luckily Cal Spyder II is here to fulfill your fantasies.

31

EXTRA EXTRA…

Another option is restoring and upgrading your old Porsche 911 into the classic car of the future. Dutch company Voitures Extravert replaces your engine with electric powertrains to make it futurefriendly. The company calls its electric 911 the Quintessenza but only plans to build a few cars every year. By 2020, they hope to be building 3 cars per month so you may want to reserve your spot now to make sure to save your space in line.

BECK 356 Speedster

Based On: 1948 Porsche 356 Speedster The Skinny: The 356 Speedster was Porsche' first car so no wonder it has a global following and a hefty price tag. The Beck 356 Speedster is the perfect alternative using as many accurate parts as possible. And you get air conditioning with it too!

Panamericana 300 SL Gullwing Based On: 1954 Mercedes-Benz 300SL The Skinny: Gullwings were invented for the 1954 SL300 in order to accommodate a very stiff racing chassis, since then, they have been sought after for generations of classic car lovers. The 300SL itself, the race-winning, awe-inspiring icon that it is, is on the must-have list of any classic car connoisseur. Gullwing America has created this beautiful replica to harness the powerful style of the original while offering modern comfort, speed and technology—a new classic that is here to stay.

Eagle Speedster

Based On: 1961 Jaguar E-Type The Skinny: Enzo Ferrari once said that the Jaguar E-type was "the most beautiful car ever made." Who are we to argue? We'd rather just start saving up for an Eagle Speedster, that takes the looks of the classic Jag and infuses it with modern performance engineering. We think Enzo Ferrari would approve.

10 NEW IDEAS TO BO OST YOUR ICON STATUS

Bring back the Grandpa sweater: When #dadbod became a thing and polo shirts paired with belted chinos made a comeback, we should have known that this day would come as well. No joke – the grandpa sweater is ready to take the stage in this season’s menswear including its one-of-a-kind and mesmerizing patterns. Blame Ryan Gosling, who reportedly boasts the largest grandpa sweater collection in the world. Feel free to scour vintage shops and online boutiques if you wish to add an original piece to your collection. If not, you’ll find a wide variety of knit patterns in Sayki’s Autumn/Winter 18-19 collection as well.

Venture into your portable home – and it’s NOT a yurt: Speaking of your home… did you ever think it could be portable? Inspired by the success of AirBnB and WeWork, creators of WeLive allow you to “own” your own living space in New York and Washington, without actually having to sign a lease, purchase a deed or even decorate the space. You share everything with the “We” community where mailrooms and laundry rooms double as bars and your neighbors are like-minded people who usually share your life sensibilities. Every unit comes decorated, with beds, couches, towels, linens and all the technology you could want. The full-time concierge and housekeeping team are there to make your life even easier, while the mobile app allows you access WeWork and WeLive community events as well as interact with a global We community of 100,000 members.

Power up your pet-parent game: Listen up—he’s not only a man’s best friend, but also needs his own napping nook, or snack bowl, or treat dispenser, or sun porch. We don’t know whether it was the custom designed pet show home Cloud by Zaha Hadid Architects or the growing need for stylish pet furniture and accessories, but when IKEA gets in the game, you know the trend is here to stay. In fact, IKEA’s line of pet paraphernalia named Lurvig is one of many new launches aimed at making our cats and dogs more comfortable at home. And you thought you could get away with getting your dog a new collar this season – it’s time to update his throw pillows as well!

3

Reimagine your personal space with Wabi-sabi: If you like a good behind-the-scenes or unfiltered look at life, try to bring this philosophy home with the upward trending Wabi-sabi. No, this is not another Eastern principle that tells you how to arrange your furniture. Instead, it’s a Japanese aesthetic that highlights the importance of warmth and beauty of everyday objects, despite their apparent flaws. Of course, you start any good transformation with decluttering – Wabi-sabi requires that you get rid of all the “junk” and reimagine your personal space with pieces that come from nature – natural woods, stones and plants are must-have additions. Your renewed motto might as well be “Less stuff, more memories.” The goal is to find the perfect balance between what is needed and what makes you feel good. DIY furniture and accessories take center stage. Vintage frames showcasing black and white photos of your grandparents, imperfect pottery, a custom-built side table made from reclaimed wood you collected…

5

Embrace the 90s with a vengeance: We all love a good 90s comeback – after all the military style of the decade is a favorite in power suits and outerwear, in both form and color. When the style codes of an era make a comeback in all its former glory, however, we all take special notice. The fanny pack is back; so are “ugly” sneakers. Designers of high-end brands are rebelling against the full-on sartorial looks and making us think again of the protest pieces of days gone. Shoulders are wider too, and pants, they are a-changing. It is no longer uncommon to see a suit jacket paired with a pair of sweatpants. Take inspiration from John F. Kennedy Jr.’s personalized looks from the 90s – at the very least, you’ll want to wear your caps backwards.

8

Discover new destinations: Known for its wilderness and protected parks, the isolated island state of Tasmania off the coast of Australia is now an open-air museum, and its capital, Hobart a major tourism destination thanks to David Walsh’s Museum of Old and New Art (MONA.) MONA is Australia’s largest private museum and houses one of the most controversial private collections of modern art and antiquities in the world. Described by Walsh as a “subversive adult Disneyland,” the collection includes Egyptian mummies and thought-provoking contemporary art. The site also includes the Moorilla winery and vineyard, a cellar door and wine bar, as well as restaurant. With the MONA FOMA, the Festival of Music and Art, in January and the DARK MOFO in June, both curated by Walsh, Hobart is also home to year-round showcases of many art forms, including light and sound installations as well as dance and theater performances, with artists like Ryoji Ikeda and John Cale making an appearance.

4

Become a coffee connoisseur: If you’re a coffee lover, then you’re probably familiar with a growing trend – mapping out the world’s variety of coffee beans and taste-testing them in unique experiences. Countries like El Salvador, Burundi and Nicaragua are some of the up-and-comers that have stood apart when it comes to producing unique-tasting beans. Explore your local city to find a brewer who also shares the art of sourcing, roasting and serving coffee— like Kronotrop and Petra Coffee in Istanbul. Did you know for example that New York’s Laughing Man Coffee, of Hugh Jackman fame, was inspired by a trip the actor took to Ethiopia in 1999? Jackman even produced a film about the coffee bean grower Dukale, who was the reason the famed artist decided to invest in a chain of ethical coffee shops upon his return. Learn the story behind the coffee beans – becoming an expert on coffee beans is a shortcut to becoming a true icon this season.

7

Find your inner Mozart – under water: What else did you expect from a generation that writes its own rules and has the power to make everything old seem new again. The millennials took over the music scene a while back but now they are taking over your local pool too! And that local pool may very well be an underground cistern or a historical hammam. Make sure you pack a swimsuit in every bag you make; you never know when the opportunity will arise to attend a major music event at an underground pool party. Luxury hotels in cities like Istanbul and Phuket have already carved out spaces to accommodate this growing trend – you can listen to your own playlist, with the help of underwater earpods, while doing laps for your daily exercise. The first breakout band of the underwater music scene: Between Music, a five-person band from Denmark.8

Reclaim your Wes Anderson: You need to know what Wes Anderson is doing, at all times, period. To ensure icon status, one artist has to always be in your everyday vernacular: Wes Anderson. The stories he tells, the characters he creates, his obsession with symmetry, his signature color palettes are all a part of his enduring charisma. His latest addition to popular culture is Isle of Dogs, a stop-motion film due to be released in Spring 2019. In the meantime, you can visit a new exhibition curated by Anderson and popular costume designer, illustrator and writer Juman Malouf. Set to open in Vienna’s Kunsthistoriches Museum, followed by an appearance at Fondazione Prada, the exhibition will feature antiques from the Greco-Roman period, musical instruments and wide variety of war paraphernalia, including sleds. Other recent Wes Anderson gems you may want to chase this season are The Wes Anderson Collection: Bad Dads book and the @accidentallywesanderson Instagram feed.

Sign up for the latest technology: When it comes to our television sets, we are now considering more than just resolution. We live in a world where monitors can be rolled up and boast maximum portability (thank you LG!) and micro-LED screens can literally build walls (thank you Samsung!) Next up on our must-have list: MARS, a pair of Clova AI-supported Bluetooth earbuds, which enable real-time, in-ear translation. The noise-cancelling headphone of the year? Bang & Olufsen’s over-the-ear Beoplay H9 of course. Sony’s adorable robot dog is also back but this time more intelligent, connected and agile. AIBO’s onboard camera allows it to act as a mobile webcam, but don’t worry, he’s still highly pettable. And finally, something that turns exercise into a video game: Black Box VR is building the gym of the future using the HTC Vive, motion-tracking controllers and specially designed workout equipment. With locations in your neighborhood, you will soon be able to strap into a game, work out and compete with your fellow gamers on the leaderboard.

Travel Activity: The Philosopher’s Path

Kyoto is a walker’s city, its classical architecture easily explored on foot. There are many options for the visitor in Kyoto but the cherry blossom walks are a must in the Spring. On the Philosopher’s Path tour, you’ll be able to both enjoy the cherry blossoms that line the canal in the Higashiyama district and also discover dazzling temples along the way.

WHY SHOULD YOU VISIT KYOTO?

72

T

Once the capital of Japan, Kyoto boasts more Michelin starred restaurants than fast food joints, while artfully blending formal traditions with innovations of the modern world. Travelers around the world are adding this city to their bucket list. Şebnem Denktaş

he travel agents call Kyoto the city the Japanese go to, to see the real Japan… It is a city that has been able to preserve its rich history and traditions through thousands of years, while maintaining a full presence in today’s world (it is the birthplace of Nintendo after all.) And it is the presence of this duality that has made Kyoto a popular tourist destination in recent years. Paralyzed for a period after the 2011 earthquake and almost closed to visitors, it has risen from its ashes thanks to important investments from hotel chains like the Ritz-Carlton. Its cobblestoned streets lead the way to numerous classical temples and Zen gardens as Kyoto deservingly welcomes visitors with its unparalleled surprises throughout the year. Located on Honshu Island, Kyoto was once the capital if Imperial Japan. Decorated with Buddhist temples, imperial palaces, Shinto (the traditional religion of Japan) shrines, antique gardens and traditional wooden houses, the city has always differed from its competitors. Its architecture is not the only thing that makes Kyoto different. It is also known by travelers for kaiseki dining, considered the haute cuisine of Japan, and geisha, the female entertainers found in the Gion district. So what should be on your Kyoto itinerary? We researched the most authentic experiences for you.

Nature: Arashiyama Bamboo Forest

A must-see natural wonder in Kyoto… A place to truly experience the beauty of light and the effects of the forest on a person’s mental state.

To Note

There is direct flights from Istanbul to Osaka, after which you can reach Kyoto through a 30-minute train ride. The best time to visit the city is between April-June and September-November.

Culture: Geishas of Gion

This is where traditional Kyoto still lives… You can slip into the daily lives of beautiful geishas, attending a traditional tea ceremony they lead, which will surely be one of the most unforgettable experiences of your Kyoto visit.

Philosophy's Walk

Eat-Drink: Pontocho Street

Hotel: Hoshinoya Kyoto

Our hotel recommendations also include the Four Seasons Hotel Kyoto, The Ritz-Carlton Kyoto and the Suirian, A Luxury Collection Hotel Kyoto; however, the Hoshinoya Kyoto tops the list if you prefer a more boutiquehotel experience. This 25-room wonder is nestled inside a forest up the Hozugawa river and can only be reached by motorboat.

Daigoji and Kiyomizu-dera Temple

Nanzenji Temple

Packed with street food, restaurants as well as fine dining options, Pontocho Street is the highlight of the vibrant nightlife district of Kyoto. If you wish to try one of the 100+ Michelinstarred restaurants in Kyoto, we recommend Hyotei with its three stars, luckily situated inside the Nanzenji Temple, an architecture that dates back to the 17th century. Another favorite is three-starred family establishment Nakamura, with its focus on kaiseki dining, and the singlestarred Ajiro, globally famous for its traditional Buddhist vegetarian menu.

Temple: Daigoji and Kiyomizu-dera

Fushimi Inari

Shrine: Fushimi Inari An architectural masterpiece with its prominent place in history, the Fushimi Inari Shrine is known for its red gates leading up to Inari mountain and is the most famous Shinto shrine in Kyoto. It’s also the best place to taste best sake.

There are more than 1600 temples in Kyoto. One of the oldest and most beautiful Buddhist temples on the list is Daigoji, providing unparalleled and ever-changing vistas for the avid photographer, through the seasons. Kiyomizu-dera is another temple, erected in 780, and stands apart from the others as the temple dedicated to compassion. Both are recognized UNESCO World Heritage sites.
