he Norwegian Government and the entire Norwegian maritime cluster welcome you to Norway the first week in June 2013. The Nor-Shipping event is a melting pot of people from more than 80 countries and the exhibition area contains an impressive 22,000 square meters of maritime technology. The maritime sector is a key sector in Norway. The value created in this cluster constituted 5.3 percent of the national GDP in 2011 and one in 25 people have the cluster as its main source of occupation. The environmental agenda and international regulations are starting to make a significant economic impact on the shipping industry and offer business opportunities to yards, suppliers and classification societies. I believe that sustainable growth will be the focus area in the years to come. The Nor-Shipping trade fair is an opportunity to get a view of the development in technology and design. The High North is one of the priorities for the Norwegian Government. While embracing new opportunities for increased activities in these areas, we must ensure, through cooperation and joint action, that these new developments do not jeopardize the future of this region and its environment. The Norwegian Government will present a renewed maritime strategy this spring. The strategy will continue the focus on environment, research and innovation and of course competence. The government and the industry have made a joint effort to identify the focus areas for the future. Our common goal is to create a sustainable maritime industry. I cordially welcome you to Norway and to the great experience of Nor-Shipping 2013. Nor-Shipping includes world-class conferences and provides an extraordinary arena for professional networking that lays the ground for fruitful business opportunities for the maritime industry.

That`s because our industry attracts talent. But we are simultaneously an industry subject to fierce global competition for talent. We are engaging stakeholders and key players to take a closer look at an industry that performs such an important role worldwide.
We began to ask “What’s next?” during Nor-Shipping 2011. The standing-room only audience at that year’s Opening Conference listened attentively as industry heavyweights and rising stars shared their insights and visions for the future, creating an active discussion. In 2013, we continue the conversation, exploring the industry’s future via our conferences and the other value-added events that complement the exhibition.
he maritime industry is known for its ability to seize opportunities and adapt to new challenges. Our industry is international by nature. Nor-Shipping is therefore an important arena where we can exchange ideas, insights, opinions and lessons learned. Together we represent an entire world of business opportunities. Our industry has always explored answers to the important question: What`s next?
A major event during the Nor-Shipping 2013 week will be the International Chamber of Shipping (ICS) Annual General Meeting, hosted by the Norwegian Shipowners’ Association. ICS is the principal international trade association and employers’ organization for merchant ship operators, representing all sectors and trades and about 80 percent of the world merchant fleet. The President of ICS, Masamichi Morooka, will also be speaking at the Nor-Shipping Opening Conference. You will find that Nor-Shipping is not only a trade fair. This arena will gather delegates and exhibitors with the widest and deepest global knowledge and experience of our industry. Ocean Talent Camp at Nor-Shipping offers an experience-oriented exhibition in close collaboration with the Norwegian maritime cluster. It will be a time to share information, generate ideas and investigate new business opportunities. I hope this week will be rewarding, both in terms of business and pleasure. It gives me great pleasure to welcome the international maritime industry to Nor-Shipping 2013.
he maritime industry goes from cycle to cycle, living with uncertainty. This makes “What’s next?” a relevant question – and one that gets interesting responses. Expect it to be prominent during Nor-Shipping 2013.
The necessity to look to the future is not just relevant for our stakeholders but also for Nor-Shipping. During our 50-year history, we have developed from a niche shipbuilding exhibition into a weeklong industry-wide event with conferences, professional networking gatherings and countless other activities – with the exhibition at the center of it all. You will experience many new initiatives this year. These include: “Innovation Park”, where small, innovative Norwegian companies present themselves; “Venture”, a matchmaking arena for investors and capital-hungry companies; “Nor-Shipping Forum”, where shipowners meet in a more intimate setting; and “Nor-Shipping Island”, a common arena for many of the event week’s social activities. While our visitors come from around 80 countries, the Norwegian maritime cluster’s strong presence at Nor-Shipping remains an attraction for our international delegates. Not only does Norway have one of the most complete maritime clusters in the world, but according to recently released research, it now also has the world’s largest orderbook. We look forward to welcoming you to Nor-Shipping 2013.
welcome! N
or-Shipping is the leading maritime event week. Our topquality exhibition, high-level conferences and prime networking opportunities attract the international maritime industry to Oslo every other year.
This, the 24th Nor-Shipping, is not only the largest such event this year in
Scandinavia, but also in Europe. One of the reasons it is a “don’t miss” for so many is that all of our visitors are maritime professionals. Our link to Norwegian shipowners and offshore industry is also seen as a plus. This publication is meant to be a useful guide for planning your visit to Nor-Shipping 2013. Returning
visitors will discover new arenas for networking and idea exchange, as well as an added focus on innovation and maritime finance. The diversity of the event week should be readily visible in these pages – if you are in the maritime industry, then Nor-Shipping will undoubtedly have something to offer you. Join us!

The offshore shipping industry plays an increasing role in the global maritime world, as demonstrated by the international interest in Nor-Shipping’s first Agenda Offshore conference. A meeting place for oil companies and the offshore shipowners and players on whom they are dependent to meet their targets remains just as relevant today. It is natural that such an event be held in Norway – home to the world’s second largest fleet of offshore vessels. We gather industry leaders for keynote presentations and thought-provoking roundtable discussions about pushing the boundaries into new geographic areas and industry segments.
PwC invites you to a seminar covering a series of topics important to many Nor-Shipping delegates. Their experts will share insight about: tax optimization, predictability and compliance challenges; business integrity in a complex, international environment; and what makes the Oslo stock exchange the right choice for shipping and energy companies.

Innovation, Norwegian style At the Nor-Shipping 2013 exhibition, Norwegian maritime companies will be in the spotlight at Innovation Park. Produced by the Norwegian governmental organization Innovation Norway, the Park aims to support small, innovative companies. “This will give them exposure to the international maritime community that they would not otherwise be able to achieve on an individual basis,” says Jan Børre Rydningen of Innovation Norway.
Located in Hall T and part of the extended Norwegian Maritime Exporters pavilion, Innovation Park is expected to present some 10 companies on about 100 square meters. The concept was tested for energy companies at the international energy event ONS in 2012. It could well prove to also be a popular and affordable way to exhibit for small maritime companies. •

opening conference june o4 2o13
Embracing change Visionary leaders who embrace change will survive the tough times facing the shipping industry by seizing opportunities offered by fuel-efficient ship design, LNG, smarter use of new technology and growth markets. Many of these visionaries will be speaking at Nor-Shipping, giving us the inside story.
O
ne such visionary leader is Andreas Sohmen-Pao, a keynote speaker at the Opening Conference’s “Changemakers” roundtable. The CEO of BW Maritime and BW Gas, part of the world leading BW Group, was born into one of the shipping industry’s most distinguished families. Oxford and Harvard educated Sohmen-Pao worked at Goldman Sachs before transitioning into his family’s shipping operation. Now a global industry leader in his own right, his views are listened to closely, especially on the ongoing debate about the role of the “old” world of Scandinavia, Europe and the United States as shipping moves east to Asia.
Sohmen-Pao is an advocate of shipping becoming part of the sustainability equation; cheap freight has been a primary factor in stimulating the excessive consumption and mobility that has become the new normal. While shipping is the most carbon efficient way of moving goods, ocean transportation is nevertheless a significant contributor to global emissions. Sohmen-Pao said recently in Singapore that the industry must “look aggressively for efficiencies and sustainability opportunities”, optimize existing ships and actively support new technologies that address fuel management and sustainability issues. fueled by lng New emission rules are making natural gas the best “green” option for the industry, a huge advantage for BW Gas, one of the largest independent owners and operators of LNG carriers. A European Commission Directive passed at the end of 2012 reduces the maximum sulphur 18 Nor-Shipping
content of marine fuels from 3.5 percent to 0.5 percent by January 2020. In some very fragile ecosystems, such as the Baltic Sea and the North Sea, the maximum sulphur content will be reduced to 0.1 percent already in 2015. DNV CEO Henrik O. Madsen, part of the “Changemakers” roundtable, is a strong advocate of LNG. DNV, which has been active in the LNG industry since the 1960s, is involved in more than one third of ongoing LNG projects and classifies more than one fifth of the LNG carrier fleet on order. growth markets Another visionary leader who will address what’s in store for the maritime industry is the widely respected Claus V. Hemmingsen, previously stationed in Hong Kong and Singapore for Maersk Line and now CEO of Maersk Drilling, part of the A.P. Moller - Maersk Group, which owns one of the world’s largest shipping companies. As a member of the Group’s Executive Board with overall responsibility for Maersk Supply Service, Maersk Tankers, SVITZER and Maersk FPSO, Hemmingsen runs a virtual empire. “The Maersk Group is investing a lot of money in growing our business. A lot of these investments are in growth markets,” Hemmingsen said in a posting on the company’s website. Maersk Drilling alone needs about 3,000 new people in the next five years to sustain its growth. Hemmingsen is also Head of the Maersk Sustainability Council. “The beautiful thing about the industries that we are in is that when we reduce
the CO2 emissions, when we increase our fuel efficiency, we also increase productivity and we increase efficiency so it’s actually a win-win situation for everybody,” he says. asian voice Masamichi Morooka, a senior executive with Nippon Yusen Kabushiki Kaisha (NYK) and Chairman of the International Chamber of Shipping (ICS) – a leading shipowner lobby group – will add an influential Asian voice to the Opening Conference. As ICS Chairman, he has pledged to focus on eliminating piracy and reducing CO2 emissions, and on the aftermath of the Costa Concordia tragedy. Dr. Ali Obaid Al-Yabhouni, the UAE Governor for OPEC and Alternate Chairman of the OPEC Board of Governors, will provide an entirely different perspective as a senior tanker executive and OPEC delegate. Given the current malaise in ship finance, many will also be listening attentively to Kristin H. Holth, Head of the Shipping, Offshore and Logistics’ division of DNB – Norway’s largest bank and a world leader in the ship financing sector. The future of the maritime industry will depend on how visionary leaders increase margins, cut better deals and move further ahead. But, in the end, shipping is about the markets. “If China’s growth really starts to accelerate again, along with the rest of Asia, and the U.S. and Europe move out of crisis, shipping could yet glimpse another era of success,” says TradeWinds Editor-in-Chief Julian Bray. •

What’s next? The maritime industry has had its share of game-changing events. Accurately forecasting the next one and its resulting impact can yield significant reward. Will new sources of oil and gas, policies unique to China or the opening of the Arctic passageway turn the industry in a different direction? What will be the impact of rising fuel costs or environmental regulations? International shipowners and trendmakers make and debate their predictions.

The changemakers Forward-thinking leaders spearhead change, pushing the industry forward. This transformation can come from industry players who cooperate even with their competitors to create innovative answers to common issues. At the same time, others choose to go it alone. Regulators, politicians and technology companies also play key roles. As international challenges demand international solutions, we bring leaders from around the world from each of these groups together to inform and inspire us at Nor-Shipping.

the offshore shipping conference june o5 2o13
Helge Lund CEO, Statoil
Pushing the borders When Helge Lund, CEO of Statoil, and Andy Brown, the Upstream International Director of Royal Dutch Shell plc, speak at Agenda Offshore, the maritime industry, which is increasingly dependent on the offshore sector for its income, will be listening attentively.
D
eveloping offshore basins in harsh environments and ever deeper waters around the world – whether in the Gulf of Mexico or off Brazil, West Africa or Norway – will take technical know-how, opening up a goldmine for the technology and equipment suppliers servicing oil and gas companies. That is of course not a new discovery for the maritime industry – the offshore sector accounted for 54 percent of global investments in new vessels in 2012, according to Clarkson Research Services. The Shell-operated Perdido project in the Gulf of Mexico – the world’s deepest offshore oil 24 Nor-Shipping
drilling and production platform – is a good example of international cooperation between the oil and gas industry and its suppliers. It took thousands of men and women from 48 countries and contractors from five continents – including Technip, Kiewit, FMC Technologies and Heerema Marine Contractors – to design, build and assemble the platform. Statoil is one driving force in offshore frontiers. It ranks number two in the world based on the number of subsea wells and is the world’s largest operator at depths greater than 100 meters. Statoil is exploring the Arctic region –
where few parts of the world present a harsher environment – with increased fervor. maritime moves offshore The offshore sector is also becoming increasingly important to the maritime cluster in Norway. The country is home to the world’s second-largest and most modern offshore fleet. Norway’s orderbook, comprising 326 vessels, was worth $36.1 billion last year, the largest of any nation, according to Clarkson. Many of these are sophisticated offshore vessels that are involved in all petroleum activities from seismic surveying to production.
Andy Brown
Upstream International Director, Royal Dutch Shell
But it has not always been easy. Norwegian shipowners, many of whom have humble roots in small fishing communities along the country’s coast, have had to reinvent themselves and come up with innovation designs and products, whether that has meant building specialized vessels for the oil and gas industry or for offshore wind installations. Norway’s family-owned Ulstein Group has been in business for nearly 100 years; the company has seen its fair share of cyclical ups and downs. Success has partly come from looking for new opportunities during difficult times. It was during the previous downtown that Ulstein created the X-bow, Gunvor Ulstein, CEO of Ulstein Group and Managing Director of Ulstein Shipping AS, said in an interview with local Norwegian newspaper Sunnmørsposten in February. The X-BOW® hull line design allows for higher transit speed in adverse weather conditions, as well as enhanced fuel economics. Much of the activity at the surface of the sea is moving subsea, Ulstein noted. Statoil is, for example, targeting four technology areas where it has a competitive advantage and a long track record of “making the impossible possible”, Margareth Øvrum, Executive Vice President for Technology, Projects and Drilling at Statoil, said on the company’s website. One of these areas is realizing subsea compression by 2015 and completing a “subsea factory” by 2020.
“Our technology advances would not have been possible without the solutions developed by an innovative and dynamic supplier industry [...]” Margareth Øvrum
Executive Vice President for Technology, Projects and Drilling at Statoil
“Our technology advances would not have been possible without the solutions developed by an innovative and dynamic supplier industry, as well as by universities and research institutes. In order to succeed in our four prioritized technology areas, we require new solutions and closer cooperation with our suppliers, national and international research milieus, and other partners,” Øvrum said. Exploring the oceans As the ocean space is explored, both geographical and industry borders are pushed. Waves and wind, wild and cultivated food, minerals, oil and gas resources – all call for the maritime cluster to reinvent itself yet again. The ocean space race has begun.
Coastal and ocean-based industries will look for synergies across traditional sectors and in the new and broader category – Ocean Industries – where highly specialized companies and technology experts can benefit from more applications, bigger markets and new opportunities. Norway’s maritime companies can yet again push the borders by reinventing themselves as ocean industry experts. •

the offshore shipping conference june o5 2o13 The offshore shipping industry plays an increasing role in the global maritime world, as demonstrated by the international interest in Nor-Shipping’s first Agenda Offshore conference. A meeting place for oil companies and the offshore shipowners and players on whom they are dependent to meet their targets remains just as relevant today. It is natural that such an event be held in Norway — home to the world’s second largest fleet of offshore vessels.

the new frontiers The potential of new frontier acreages in ultra deep waters and Arctic areas creates huge demand for offshore shipping services to support their upstream activities. In many ways, the maritime offshore industry and the oil and gas companies are each other’s most important resource and partner, involved in the entire value chain. Oil company leaders actively exploring new frontiers tell their story – where are they looking for oil and gas, what challenges are they facing? How must the maritime industry respond? ocean Space technology A steady rise in population and global prosperity has encouraged mankind to look to the ocean space to meet growing demand for resources. Exciting technologies have enabled mankind access to new sources of energy, from hydrocarbon fields deep below the seabed to wind and solar farms on the surface. Where will the next area of growth be for the offshore maritime segment? How can different stakeholders work together to develop technologies to access the ocean space in a safe and responsible way? Nor-Shipping welcomes some pioneers of Ocean Space Technology for a lively discussion and debate on the future of offshore.

Leaders get down to business The chance to clinch deals, share business insights and network with their peers in the shipping industry is what attracts high-profile players to Nor-Shipping every second year.
W
hether it’s top executives exchanging ideas at a VIP lunch or big names like John Fredriksen discussing his latest IPO at the Brazilian stand, shipping honchos are there in force. And as Nor-Shipping 2013 approaches, shipping executives are preparing to make the most of the opportunity to rub shoulders with their colleagues. As Sabyasachi Hajara, Chairman and Managing Director of state-owned Shipping Corporation of India, says: “The fact that Nor-Shipping 2011, which was held during a slowdown in global shipping, attracted so many participants shows what an important meeting place and forum it is for world shipping today.” long-term impact Some relationships forged at Nor-Shipping can have far-reaching effects. Sevan Marine’s Arne Smedal and Teekay Corporation’s Peter Evensen met during Nor-Shipping 2011. They worked throughout the following summer on a business 28 Nor-Shipping
model that would help save Sevan Marine, which was struggling with high debt. That autumn, Sevan Marine announced an agreement for financial restructuring and an industrial partnership with Teekay Corporation.
José Sérgio Gabrielli, who was Petrobras’s CEO at the time, met 10 industry leaders at a VIP lunch during the last Nor-Shipping. As Nor-Shipping Director Vidar Pederstad says, “This sort of thing is good for the industry. It’s a great
opportunity for executives who don’t normally get the chance to meet to do so in a relaxed atmosphere.” Gabrielli also had an informal meeting with John Fredriksen and his right-hand man, Tor Olav Trøim, at the Petrobras exhibition stand, thanks to the matchmaking skills of former Seadrill director Pål Nordgreen. Nordgreen, who has 30 years of experience in the offshore industry, particularly in the Brazilian market, knew Gabrielli was at Nor-Shipping to speak about the development of Brazilian deep water fields, the need for rigs, OSVs and FPSOs, as well as local content demands. He also knew that Fredriksen-controlled Seadrill, which has several ultra-deep water units in Brazil, was, at the time, looking to spin off its Brazilian operations into a separate listed company, Seabras. These three would definitely have had a lot to talk about, which is why “a general chat” was arranged between them at the Petrobras stand. According to Nordgreen, the trio discussed Seadrill’s interests in Brazil, including for LNG terminals and OSVs, the pending Seadrill IPO on the Sao Paulo Stock Exchange, as well local costs. Last year, shortly after Gabrielli stepped down as CEO, Seadrill announced a delay in the planned listing of Seabras to work on structural changes to the IPO following its dialogue with Petrobras. In a press statement, Seadrill said it was looking at “several opportunities to increase Seabras’s activities” prior to the IPO and was establishing a separate organization to support this. Clearly Fredriksen and Petrobras have had a lot to talk about since that initial meeting. The IPO is now set to take place during the middle of this year.
nor-shipping FORUM Also set to take place mid-2013 – on June 5 during Nor-Shipping week – is the Nor-Shipping Forum, a gathering of shipowners that will be held for the first time. CNN analyst Todd Benjamin will moderate the two-hour invitation-only discussion, which will be followed by mingling and a dinner buffet. The venue is the fashionable The Thief hotel in Tjuvholmen, Oslo’s waterfront district. “Industry leaders will have a golden opportunity to meet with partners and competitors in an intimate setting to discuss the issues they consider important – rather than those set by a conference organizer,” says Pederstad.

Maritime matchmaking During its more than 50-year history, Nor-Shipping has raised the bar to attract – time after time – the cream of the international maritime industry to Oslo. This year, for the first time, Nor-Shipping is creating a matchmaking arena where investors and growth companies in ocean industries can meet to make and seal deals.

ndustries that are dependent on the ocean are diverse and on the rise. Shipping and offshore energy as well as fisheries and seafood are sectors included in what we have chosen to call Ocean Industries. We are using our oceans to harvest food and generate energy in new ways. At the same time, opportunities are being created through new commercial shipping routes and new areas for mineral, oil and gas exploration.
Add to this the fact that two-thirds of the Earth’s surface is covered by water – and we haven’t explored our oceans nearly as much as the land that covers the remaining one-third. According to the World Ocean Council, the need to better document and monitor the ocean has never been greater, and improved and expanded information will clearly benefit science, government, society and business alike. Ocean industries set to grow There is a strong business case for investing in ocean-dependent companies because of their growth potential in global markets. As part of Norway’s maritime cluster, technology companies will benefit from collaboration to develop synergies and economies of scale. That’s why Nor-Shipping is providing a chance for investors and ocean-dependent companies to meet face-to-face. The initial focus will be on growth companies – start-ups, spin-offs and high-growth gazelle companies – in offshore shipping and the maritime industry.
“The number of newly established companies demonstrates the growth potential of the ocean industries sector,” says Erik W. Jakobsen, Managing Partner of Menon Business Economics. A total of 212 new ocean industry companies were registered in Norway in 2010 and 2011. The industry also includes a number of high growth companies. In fact, 258 companies with revenues of more than NOK 20 million in 2011 more than tripled their total revenues from 2009 to 2011 – from NOK 22.7 billion to NOK 77.7 billion, according to Jakobsen. Oslo leads in maritime finance Oslo is well suited to host this maritime matchmaking event. Investors can look to the city as a stable island in the midst of a turbulent global investment universe, and many Norwegian suppliers have both a strong international profile and technology focus. The capital city is also an ocean industry expert on the investment side and the maritime world’s leading maritime finance center, according to a report by Menon Business Economics. Oslo takes the lead based on high scores from experts and leading indicators, with the number of maritime firms on the Oslo stock exchange and the shipping banks weighing in heavily. DNB, Norway’s largest financial services group, is one of the world’s leading shipping banks, while Stockholm-based Nordea, a leading player in international shipping finance, has located its main center of competence for shipping, offshore and oil services in Oslo. •

some of its maritime heritage. Now a bustling business and residential area, it is also the location for many of Oslo’s maritime services companies.
Long ago, Tjuvholmen (literally “thieves peninsula”) was known for its shady characters and dealings. Today, through the Fjord City urban renewal program, it has become an epicenter for contemporary art, high-class restaurants and exclusive urban living at the water’s edge.
As “thick as thieves” Tjuvholmen’s history is also reflected in the aptly named new design hotel The Thief, one of Nor-Shipping’s main accommodation and event venues. Consequently, you could be forgiven for suggesting that our guests on Tjuvholmen will be as “thick as thieves”.

Nor-Shipping and YoungShip team up to engage with young comets and future newcomers to the shipping world.
A
ttracting young talent —and keeping it —is crucial for the maritime industry’s future. Young industry professionals from around the world are an integral part of the Nor-Shipping community, and this will be more visible than ever at this year’s events. Nor-Shipping 2013 has a strong focus on next-generation leaders and future recruits to the maritime industry. The foundation for this is Young@NorShipping, a series of events we are cohosting with YoungShip, the fast-growing international non-profit network for young maritime professionals. “Nor-Shipping is determined to help the industry attract and retain young talent from around the world by providing an arena where our future leaders can network with both peers and mentors. We will continue not only to give them a seat at the table, but also to encourage their active involvement throughout NorShipping week,” explains Nor-Shipping Director Vidar Pederstad. Dream Team To develop Nor-Shipping as an arena for both young industry professionals and potential recruits, we began cooperating with YoungShip in 2005. In 2011 we initiated a strategic partnership, beginning with the co-hosting of the public showcase event Nor-Shipping Campus.
34 Nor-Shipping
Vidar Pederstad called Campus an “important first step in enhancing the industry’s image that connected with bright young minds and succeeded in bringing shipping to the people.” The success of the partnership has resulted in a closer collaboration in 2013 that exploits both partners’ strengths: YoungShip focusing on coordination and implementation while Nor-Shipping takes care of marketing and funding. YoungShip Oslo Chair Torkel Ugland called the agreement, which runs up to Nor-Shipping 2017, “a testimony to Nor-Shipping taking the next generation seriously and acknowledging YoungShip’s growing importance in the maritime industry.” Action-packed Events The Young@Nor-Shipping program includes kick-off socials, a next generation leadership seminar, a student program and a young politician debate. Although a venture night and law & legal event will be held at Oslo’s City Hall Square, most of the events will be held on Nor-Shipping Island at Tjuvholmen, also allowing the younger generation to rub elbows with industry players staying on “the Island”. Industry recruiting will be well served by the Ocean Talent Camp: an exhibition that links shipping with the oil and gas sectors, and another location where the young professionals will be out in force.
Maritime Women & Young Entrepreneurs Sometimes seen from the outside as an old-boy’s network, shipping offers exciting opportunities for both men and women. Recruiting young aspiring women is key for the development of a modern, profitable and competitive global maritime industry. Organized by YoungShip, the Maritime Women Conference, a showcase of what the industry has to offer young women, is another element of the Young@NorShipping program. Finally, the newly established Young Entrepreneur Award will highlight youthful entrepreneurial zeal. Open to nominees from all segments of the industry, it will honor an under 40-year-old professional who has founded a successful company that addresses challenges or provides solutions in a new way. In addition to receiving the award in front of a prominent industry audience at a Nor-Shipping conference, the winner will be given a free display area at the Nor-Shipping exhibition’s Innovation & Venture theme park and advice and evaluation from a venture company. To keep up with the latest on the Young@ Nor-Shipping front, follow YoungShip and Nor-Shipping on Twitter and Facebook. •

An Ocean of Talent
A campaign aiming to recruit the brightest talents is among a series of initiatives focused on the “Ocean Industries” of shipping, offshore and aquaculture.
T
hese three industries have more in common than the fact that they derive their expertise and livelihoods from the oceans. Another mutual factor is their struggle to recruit enough new talent to secure future growth. Ocean Talent Camp 2013, or OTC, is part of a long-term Norwegian recruiting initiative that aims to address this challenge. OTC will be launched at Oslo’s City Hall Square on June 3-7, in parallel with Nor-Shipping 2013. Building on the success of a similar 2011 initiative, Nor-Shipping Campus, OTC is similarly not for students alone: politicians and the general public will also get a warm welcome. “It’s important to have a long-term plan for securing
36 Nor-Shipping
the talent you need in the future and also to engage with the political stakeholders that create the incentives necessary for Norwegian industry to compete for international talent,” says Nor-Shipping Director Vidar Pederstad. “Growth and innovation slow down when an industry doesn’t have a steady stream of competent employees.” ATTRACTING TALENT So what’s the secret to engaging young minds and getting them interested in industries that they get much less exposure to than sectors like the media and IT? The OTC recipe is to connect with 8th, 9th and 10th graders, introducing Ocean Industries material into a school curriculum module on career guidance and sweetening this with a five-day “Talent Camp”.
“We recognize that students decide their educational direction before they go to high school,” says Pederstad. “With Ocean Talent Camp, we aim to have an early influence on that choice.” Offering plenty of interactive, hands-on activities located on and around hi-tech exhibitor stands from the entire maritime value chain, OTC will host daily drop-in events for school classes from the greater Oslo area. The thousands of pupils and hundreds of teachers visiting OTC will already have been introduced to an educational support package and have gotten tasks to complete during their visit. Back in the classroom, they will be able to work on projects, films and competitions based on their experiences at the camp.

OCEAN INDUSTRY TALENTS Ocean Talent Camp comes under the umbrella of Ocean Industry Talents, a reputation-building initiative involving Norwegian “ocean industries”, universities and colleges of higher education. The initiative aims to promote three inter-related and key Norwegian industries – offshore energy, shipping and aquaculture – to the Norwegian public, media and authorities, as well as young potential recruits. Ocean Industry Talents itself feeds into a national identity campaign that will be launched during Nor-Shipping 2013. This aims to promote Norway’s broad maritime competence and to secure its position as a global Ocean Industry Expert. •

A sizzling hot party The BBQ event is always one of the most popular events during Nor-Shipping week. Expect no less in 2013.
S
ince 1989, Nor Shipping has hosted a BBQ party during the exhibition. At first a relatively small, intimate affair, it has grown to become a sold-out highlight of the Nor-Shipping week, with some 2,500 attending. Well known as an excellent networking opportunity, the event attracts top people from every segment of the industry – from executives to journalists, exhibitors to politicians – for a casual, outdoors “serve-yourself” dinner. The guests mix and mingle as they are treated to tasty food and drink in a relaxed, social setting. Nor-Shipping veterans and first timers alike can easily make and renew contacts. The 2013 event, to be held on June 4, will be no exception. Following tradition, it will be hosted on the grounds of Det Norske Veritas’ (DNV) headquarters in Høvik, just outside Oslo. Several
free connection shuttle buses are available (see page 40 for details). A welcome by the Norwegian Seamen’s choir and a Dixie band concert will add to the festive tone. Norway’s Largest catered event According to the event’s caterers, the Nor-Shipping BBQ is the largest event of its kind in Norway. Twelve cooks prepare about 750 kilos of food, including lamb, spare ribs, salmon, shrimp and fish kebabs, while 25 waiters typically serve some 3,450 glasses of beer and 1,050 bottles of wine.
• Spanish meatballs and chorizo on a skewer, served with estragon aioli • Smoked salmon with scrambled eggs, gravlax and roast salmon with sour cream and summer salad • Country chicken stuffed with basil, tomatoes and mozzarella cheese. Bulgur salad with herbal and yoghurt dressing • Halibut steamed in white wine and scampi on a skewer, served with salsa verde sauce and jasmine rice • Assorted sausages. Tomato and onion salad, house potato salad and garnishing • Deep-sea prawns, Engelsvik prawns, marinated calamari and crawfish-tail salad • Scampi Asian style, mussels and King crab Dessert • Petit four, mini chocolate cake and chocolate in a cup with ganache • Mini-tartlet lemon cream and cumquats • Fruit skewer with strawberries and pineapple • Mini mon amour glass • Assorted mousses
