ABOUT EDUSA Education South Africa (EduSA) is the national association of quality English language centres throughout South Africa. We are committed to developing and guiding the growth of our members and the entire English language travel industry within the country. EduSA sets out to ensure that members meet or exceed the guaranteed standards of professionalism and quality by offering continuous guidance and support. South Africa steadily paved its way into the EFL industry, and as the growth within the sector suggests, is becoming increasingly popular. This growth has witnessed proliferation of English language centres offering English language tuition and accompanying services. EduSA serves as an association which adheres to international industry standards and commits to helping develop all its members. EduSA is a sub-sector of SAYTC (South African Youth and Travel Confederation) which represents all sectors of the youth travel industry within South Africa. SAYTC has since become part of SATSA (Southern Africa Tourism Services Association), thus providing EduSA members the opportunity and voice to highlight the contribution of our sector to the growth of tourism in our beautiful country.
ENSURING QUALITY STANDARDS All EduSA centres agree to undergo the EduSA on-site language centre inspection and maintain the standards stipulated therein. Language centres must pass the inspection in order to qualify for membership. Inspection criteria include: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. 8.

FULL MEMBER The full membership inspection is a comprehensive review which requires that each school’s business model, as well as their academic and social programmes meet the full membership criteria. The following aspects are inspected in detail: facilities, staff contracts, courses offered, services offered, centre and staff management, administration, policies and procedures, accommodation, host profiles, student welfare, legal requirements, teaching methodology and curriculum overview. Teacher observations also take place. All full members are re-inspected every three years.
ASSOCIATE MEMBER EduSA has introduced its permanent associate membership tier in response to the needs of certain incubator members. Instead of applying for full membership, schools have the opportunity to apply for associate membership status if they fulfil all academic and administrative quality requirements of the full membership inspection, but do not offer ancillary services such as social programmes and accommodation. An associate membership application requires the special permission of the EduSA Executive Committee and is only granted under exceptional circumstances. Re-inspection for associate membership takes place every three years. Associate members may apply for an upgrade to full membership status at any time.
INCUBATOR MEMBER Once an English language school in South Africa has been in operation for two years, it may apply for incubator membership. The following aspects are observed and analysed during the introductory inspection: academic organisation, administration, school facilities and legal requirements. Once an incubator member, schools must apply for full membership within two years.

FROM OUR STUDENTS South Africa is a great country to study English in. Students at EduSA language centres have shared their stories of special experiences learning English in South Africa.
Joseph D.R. Congo Studied in Cape Town
“My favourite class was Business English, because not only did we learn a lot about business communication, but we also had interesting debates. Sharing and defending opinions is a good way to improve your English! There was a school rule that I really liked: English Only. When you are in the building, you have to speak English to each other. I think this is very useful for students, because if you keep talking in your mother tongue, you will not improve very quickly. Another great thing about the school were the extra-curricular activities they provided. Twice a week, on Wednesdays and on Fridays, they arranged excursions. These included things like fun activities and sightseeing. For example, one Friday we went on the Red Bus Tour. It has not only been my host family, but also the school staff who treated me very kindly during my stay. All the people I met were sociable and helpful. During my lunch break at school, for example, I usually ate at restaurants, and I became friends with many of the waiters. They were always very happy to talk to me and recommend new places to go and things to do. This was one of the best surprises of Cape Town for me; to see how professionally people behave here and how well they treat their customers.”

Simone Italy Studied in Johannesburg
“I spent three months working and studying English in Johannesburg, and I had a great time. During the week I used to improve my English at the school in the morning. I started my course as Intermediary and I finished as Upper Intermediary – something I am proud of. I will probably start a Business course when I go back there, which I am planning to! I went with my English course students to Melville and to Maboneng’s market on Sunday with a group of friends. One of the things that I liked most about Joburg is the different types of people, restaurants and activities that you can meet and do in your free time.”
Vanessa D.R.Congo Studied in Johannesburg
“Firstly, teachers were lovely and helped me to learn and improve daily. Secondly, I was staying with a South African host family and I’ve found a nice family. They were lovely and friendly parents, their kids too. Johannesburg is a beautiful city, there are many interesting places like museums, zoo, art galleries, cinema. I had a chance to go there with my host family in my free time. As people say that Johannesburg isn’t a safe place. But there are some safe places like Braamfontein where many students live. I’ve even seen a difference in the way of learning about cultures.“
SOUTH AFRICA South Africa is one of the most unforgettable and enchanting countries in the world. It truly lives up to being called a “Rainbow Nation”. The breath-taking array of landscapes, warm people, intricate history and diverse culture offer visitors a unique and inspiring experience. English, one of South Africa’s official languages, is the main language for business and media. Various factors make South Africa a great place to learn to speak English: locals have an easily understandable clear accent, affordability, wonderful weather, to name but a few. There are English language schools spread across some of the most beautiful and interesting parts of South Africa. Our language centres are located in three of our provinces: Western Cape, Eastern Cape and Gauteng.

WESTERN CAPE The award-winning city of Cape Town is a city alive with possibilities. Rich in history and natural beauty, the Mother City, as it is affectionately known, is a melting pot of cultures, offering its visitors tastes, sounds and feelings that can be found nowhere else in the world. Cape Town was first established as a European supply outpost but has come a long way since those heady days and has become a favourite destination for millions of travellers annually. It is the gateway to South Africa’s Western Cape province, an area of exquisite natural beauty, filled with adventure.
Taking the cable car or hiking up to the top of Table Mountain is a “must-do” in Cape Town. The history of this wondrous city is unmatched. Its story can be found in any number of museums and heritage sites dotted around the city. From Rhodes Memorial, which sits along the slopes of Devil’s Peak, in remembrance of the city’s colonial past, to the terrible history of Robben Island and District Six. Cape Town’s tale is equally one of tragedy and heartache, inspiration and triumph.
In summer, the city’s many beaches are packed with both locals and foreigners. The western and eastern coastlines of the province are a favourite for those seeking something more extreme. Shark cage diving, surfing, bungee jumping and skydiving are just some of the adrenaline-fuelled activities on offer. Beyond the borders of the city limits lies the equally captivating world of the Cape Winelands, with the scenic town of Somerset West on its doorstep.
Established in 1822, Somerset West lies between the Helderberg and Hottentots Holland mountain ranges. The beautiful Helderberg Nature Reserve is one of the main attractions of the area, famous for its wild proteas, bird life and small mammals, as well as numerous walks that showcase the natural beauty of the reserve. The Cape Winelands region is internationally renowned for the quality and flavour of its wine. A trip through this area is one that no lover of the grape can afford to miss. Besides Somerset West, the regions of Stellenbosch, Franschhoek and Paarl are well known. Push on a bit further into the interior of the Western Cape and you will be rewarded with the beauty of more rural areas such as Montagu and Robertson, which are equally rich in wine, food, culture and majestic landscapes. With so much on offer, is it any wonder that the Western Cape continues to welcome the world to its doorstep?

KNOW YOUR CAPES
Cape Point is a dramatic and scenic promontory at the southeast corner of the Cape Peninsula. It is part of the Table Mountain National Park. The old lighthouse on the point is a popular viewpoint.
The Cape of Good Hope marks the point where a ship begins to travel more eastward than southward. It is historically significant as the rounding of the cape in 1488 by explorer Bartolomeu Dias was a milestone in Portuguese attempts establish a trade route to the East. It is part of the Table Mountain National Park.
Cape Agulhas is the geographic southern tip of the African continent and the beginning of the dividing line between the Atlantic and Indian Oceans. A marker indicates the official dividing line. It is 170 kilometres (105 mi) southeast of Cape Town, close to the town of L’Agulhas.

GAUTENG Gauteng, the smallest of the nine provinces of South Africa, is a wonderfully diverse area that embodies a variety of cultures and is considered South Africa’s business hub. This is where opportunities and dreams are made. Despite its size, Gauteng is highly urbanised and has the largest population of any province in the country. Gauteng has a rich cultural history dating back to 1886, when gold was first discovered in the region. The province’s name is actually derived from the Afrikaans word ‘goud’ which means gold, and the Sotho-Tswana locative suffix ‘-ng’. It is known in Sesotho as the ‘Place of Gold’. At attractions like Gold Reef City, an amusement park built on an old gold mine, you can experience a gold tour through a variety of museums, giving you some idea of what life was like in Johannesburg in the 19th Century. The staff adorn costumes from the 1880’s, you can descend 75 metres underground into a mine and then enjoy a gold-pouring demonstration. While Johannesburg (also affectionately known as Joburg or Jozi) is the largest city in Gauteng, Pretoria, another major city is the country’s administrative capital. The two cities are only an hour apart by road and are connected by the Gautrain, an 80km commuter rail system which is linked to Johannesburg’s OR Tambo International Airport as well.
Pretoria is known as Jacaranda City after the numerous trees that colour the city purple each spring.
Gauteng has delightfully mild weather all year round. It is said to be one of the world’s best climates with summer days that are warm and wind free, and winter days that are crisp, clear and not too cold. This allows Gauteng’s residents to enjoy the outdoors throughout the year, making picnicking and outdoor sports popular for young and old alike.
8
For those of interested in human evolution and how our ancestors subsisted, The Cradle of Humankind, which is now a World Heritage Site, is another Gauteng location that should not be missed.
The Apartheid Museum is Joburg’s number 1 attraction on TripAdvisor. It shows what life was like for South Africans under the apartheid system through dramatic photographs, videos, press clips, personal belongings and moving stories. The unique geography of this province offers a combination of natural beauty and mineral wealth. It is situated at a high altitude and is home to the scenic Magaliesberg and Witwatersberg mountain ranges. The Dinokeng Game Reserve
is only an hour’s drive from Johannesburg, where you will be able to see the ‘Big 5’ (lions, leopards, buffalo, elephants and rhinos) roaming wild and free. There is also an abundance of parks and botanical gardens throughout the province.

EASTERN CAPE South Africa’s ‘wild’ province, the Eastern Cape features expanses of untouched beach, semi-desert plains, mountains and true wilderness areas. Priding itself as Nelson Mandela’s home province, the region was chosen for the first large-scale settlement of English-speaking people in Africa. The area offers a range of attractions – the famous Addo Elephant National Park, hosting the densest elephant population in the world, the haunting and enchanted Karoo desert, as well as the cliffs and thick forests of the Tsitsikamma. With a rich cultural history, warm, welcoming people, and a seemingly endless list of activities, the Eastern Cape has much to offer travellers. The area has warm, temperate summers while winters are mild and pleasant.
Situated on the south-eastern tip of Africa, the Bay boasts 40 km of beaches washed by the warm water of the Indian Ocean. These beautiful beaches, along with the city of Port Elizabeth’s excellent accommodation facilities, lure thousands of visitors annually.
Here travellers can bask on golden sandy beaches, bungee-jump or abseil, hike the rugged coastline, learn to surf in the warm Indian Ocean waves or sandboard on some of the biggest dunes in the world. The Eastern Cape offers you a sense of freedom few other places in the world can. Where else can you enjoy breakfast in a five-star, beachfront hotel and spend that same night in a traditional Xhosa hut with African villagers? Nelson Mandela Bay, named after former South African president and Nobel Peace Prize winner, Nelson Mandela, comprises of Port Elizabeth, Uitenhage and Despatch.
Addo Elephant National Park is an hour’s drive from Nelson Mandela Bay and is home to the Big 7 - elephant, rhino, buffalo, lion, leopard, Humpback whale and Great White shark. Nelson Mandela Bay plays host to a range of attractions, from history and heritage, ecotourism, entertainment and shopping to business and wildlife viewing. It was in this region that Khoisan, Xhosa, English, Dutch and German people first met in South Africa.
At 216 metres above the Bloukrans River, the bungee jump at Bloukrans Bridge is one of the highest in the world.
