Setting standards, ensuring quality
From our students South Africa is a great country to study English in. Students at EduSA language centres have shared their stories of special experiences learning English in South Africa.
Joseph D.R. Congo Studied English in Cape Town
My favourite class was Business English, because not only did we learn a lot about business communication, but we also had interesting debates. Sharing and defending opinions is a good way to improve your English! There was a school rule that I really liked: English Only. When you are in the building, you have to speak English to each other. I think this is very useful for students, because if you keep talking in your mother tongue, you will not improve very quickly. Another great thing about the school were the extracurricular activities they provided. Twice a week, on Wednesdays and on Fridays, they arranged excursions. These included things like fun activities and sightseeing. For example, one Friday we went on the Red Bus Tour. It has not only been my host family, but also the school staff who treated me very kindly during my stay. All the people I met were sociable and helpful. During my lunch break at school, for example, I usually ate at restaurants, and I became friends with many of the waiters. They were always very happy to talk to me and recommend new places to go and things to do. This was one of the best surprises of Cape Town for me; to see how professionally people behave here and how well they treat their customers.
Vanessa D.R.Congo Studied English in Johannesburg
Firstly, teachers were lovely and helped me to learn and improve daily. Secondly, I was staying with a South African host family and I’ve found a nice family. They were lovely and friendly parents, their kids too. Johannesburg is a beautiful city, there are many interesting places like museums, zoo, art galleries, cinema. I had a chance to go there with my host family in my free time. As people say that Johannesburg isn’t a safe place. But there are some safe places like Braamfontein where many students live. I’ve even seen a difference in the way of learning about cultures.
Simone Italy Studied English in Johannesburg
I spent three months working and studying English in Johannesburg, and I had a great time. During the week I used to improve my English at the school in the morning; I started my course as Intermediary and I finished as Upper Intermediary – something I can be proud of. I will probably start a Business course when I go back there, which I am planning to! I just had the opportunity to go with my English course students to Melville, and went to Maboneng’s market on Sunday with a group of friends. One of the things that I liked most about Jo’burg is the diversity of the people, restaurants and activities that you can meet and do in your free time.
Hannah & Martin Switzerland Studied English in Jeffreys Bay
We stayed in J-Bay for the whole of August 2015. We went to four hours of school in the morning. It was very nice to be in a small class so the teacher always had enough time to answer and explain all our questions. The head teacher, was always around if we had problems or questions. We did a lot of different activities. We went bungee jumping 216m down from a bridge. We also went to the waterfall for cliff jumping and swimming, beach horse riding, to a football match in Port Elizabeth (Kaizer chiefs vs PE – Chippa United) and we went to the Tsitsikamma National Park. Of course we used the opportunity to take a lot of surf lessons in the afternoon. We slept in a room with a bathroom and a big balcony with a beautiful view on the beach. Sometimes we saw dolphins from our bed. We enjoyed the time at the language school it was a good experience. We will miss this time.

About EduSA Education South Africa (EduSA) is the national association of quality English language centres in South Africa. It is committed to developing and guiding the growth of the English language travel industry in South Africa and ensuring that its members meet or exceed guaranteed minimum standards of professionalism and quality. Over the past decade South Africa has increasingly entered into the EFL industry, and has become an extremely popular destination for English Language Travellers. As a result there has been a sharp increase in the number of English language centres offering English language tuition and accompanying services. In order to provide guidance and a common voice for these centres, the idea of a language centre association was proposed and ELTASA was formed in 2003, which in 2009 became EduSA. The youth travel industry in South Africa was in the process of establishing a new association which represents every area of youth travel in the destination – accommodation, volunteers and internships, transport and tours, and education. The new body is aligned with and based on the current WYSTC model. It is known as SAYTC – South African Youth and Travel Confederation. EduSA (Education South Africa) is a sub-sector of SAYTC that incorporates all language centres, educational institutions, youth exchange programmes and summer schools.
Ensuring quality standards All EduSA centres agree to undergo the EduSA On-site Language Centre Inspection and maintain the standards stipulated therein. Language Centres must pass the inspection in order to qualify for membership. Inspection criteria include: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. 8.

full member Incubator Members must apply for Full Membership with EduSA within two years from the initial membership. The Full Membership inspection is a comprehensive inspection which requires internal business assessment to meet the Full Membership criteria. The following business aspects are inspected in detail: facilities, staff, courses, services, management, administration, accommodation, student welfare, legal requirements, as well as classroom observations. All Full Members are re-inspected every 3 years.
associate member EduSA has introduced its permanent Associate Membership tier in response to the needs of certain Incubator Members. Instead of applying for Full Membership, schools have the opportunity to apply for Associate Membership status if they fulfill all academic, administrative and estate quality requirements of the Full Membership inspection, but do not offer ancillary services such as social programmes and accommodation. An Associate Membership application requires the special permission of the EduSA Executive Committee and is only granted under exceptional circumstances. Re-inspection for Associate Membership takes place every 3 years. Associate Members may apply for an upgrade to Full Membership status at any time.
incubator member An English language school in South Africa that has been in operation for at least two years may apply for Incubator Membership. The following aspects are observed and analysed during the introductory inspection: academic organisation, administration, school facilities and legal requirements. Once an Incubator Member, schools must apply for Full Membership within two years.

south africa South Africa is one of the most diverse and enchanting countries in the world. A combination of landscapes, people, history and culture offer visitors a unique and inspiring experience. English is one of South Africa’s official languages and is the main language for business and the media. South Africa is a great place to learn to speak English and there are a number of English language schools in beautiful and interesting places. Over the past decade South Africa has increasingly entered into the EFL industry, and has become an extremely popular destination for English language students. EduSA language centres are located in three of South Africa’s provinces: Western Cape, Eastern Cape and Gauteng.

Cape Town, a port city on South Africa’s southwest coast, is a city alive with possibilities. Rich in SOUTH AFRICA history and natural beauty, the Mother City, as it is commonly known is a melting pot of cultures and as such, offers its visitors tastes, sounds and feelings that can be found nowhere else in the EASTERN CAPE world. This is the gateway to South Africa’s Western WESTERN CAPE Cape province, an area of natural beauty, culture Port Elizabeth Cape Town and adventure. Jeffreys Bay

Cape Town was first established as a European supply outpost, but the city has come a long way since those heady days and has become a favourite destination for travellers. With the city’s natural beauty, wide array of activities on offer and residents that welcome visitors with open arms, that’s hardly a surprise.
enticing cities. One of the most beautiful places on earth, the Mother City and surrounding areas continues to draw the world to its warm embrace, whether it is those seeking adventure and new experiences or merely just a well-deserved break.
The Western Cape has a history as rich as it is diverse, and Cape Town is a tantalising and heady mix of cultures, blended in a tumultuous past, to create one of the world’s most cosmopolitan and

particularly rare waterbirds. Here one can visit Cheetah Outreach, where one can view these elegant animals and learn about African wildlife. A sumptuous farmer’s market takes place at Paardevlei on Saturday mornings.
The heritage of this wondrous city is unmatched and its story can be found in any number of museums and heritage sites around the city. From Rhodes Memorial, which sits along the slopes of Devil’s Peak, in remembrance of the city’s colonial past, to the emotional and torrid history of Robben Island and District Six, Cape Town’s tale is equally one of tragedy and heartache, inspiration and triumph.
The Cape Winelands region is renowned for its quality of wine, and a trip through the storied Cape Winelands, home to most of South Africa’s premier wine estates, is one that no lover of the grape can afford to miss. Further outside of Cape Town, Stellenbosch, Franschhoek and Paarl are perhaps better known, but push on a bit further into the interior of the Western Cape and you will also be rewarded with the beauty of more rural areas such as Montagu and Robertson, which are equally rich in wine, food and culture, as well as majestic landscapes.
Beyond the borders of the city limits, lies the equally captivating world of the Cape Winelands with the scenic town of Somerset West on its doorstep. Established in 1822, Somerset West is on the eastern edge of the Cape Town metropole and a short drive to the long white beaches of False Bay, the yacht harbour of Gordon’s Bay and the Helderberg Nature Reserve.
With so much on offer, is it any wonder that the Western Cape continues to welcome the world to its doorstep?
Surrounded by orchards, farmlands and vineyards, Somerset West lies between the Helderberg and Hottentots Holland mountain ranges. The beautiful Helderberg Nature Reserve is one of the main attractions of the area, famous for its wild proteas, bird life and small mammals, as well as numerous walks that showcase the natural beauty of the reserve. To the northwest of Somerset West you’ll find Paardevlei – a small lake that attracts a wide variety of birds,

eastern cape Wild, untamed & beautiful South Africa’s ‘wild’ province, the Eastern Cape features expanses of untouched beach, semi-desert plains, mountains and true wilderness areas. This was Nelson Mandela’s home province, and the region chosen for the first large-scale settlement of English-speaking people in Africa, who left a rich legacy of English education and culture. The area offers a range of attractions Addo Elephant National Park, with the densest elephant population in the world, beautiful beaches, the endless views of the Karoo and the cliffs and forests of Tsitsikamma. With a rich cultural history, warm, welcoming people, and a seemingly endless list of activities, the Eastern Cape has much to offer travellers. The area has warm, temperate summers, while winters are mild and pleasant. Bask on golden sandy beaches, bungee-jump or abseil, hike the rugged coastline, wilderness areas or the mountains, learn to surf in our Indian Ocean waves, windsurf or kiteboard, sandboard on some of the biggest dunefields in the world, explore wildlife in a number of national and private parks, gaze at stars you’ve never seen before in our clear night skies, dive in our bays or simply drive across our endless semidesert plains, and enjoy the feeling of freedom.
The metro offers excellent access to education facilities. With a university, aviation schools, a language school and various colleges, there is something for everyone.
The province offers great opportunities to enjoy an authentic South African experience; where else can you enjoy breakfast in a five star beachfront hotel in the morning and spend the same night in a traditional Xhosa hut deep in rural Africa?
Jeffreys Bay Jeffreys Bay, situated just 80 km from Port Elizabeth on the Garden Route, is well-known all over the world for surfing, hosting the annual World ASP surfing contest in July every year. The town also offers excellent surf clothing shopping selling brands such as Billabong, Quiksilver and Ripcurl.
Nelson Mandela Bay/Port Elizabeth Nelson Mandela Bay, named after former South African president and Nobel Peace Prize winner, Nelson Rholihlahla Mandela, comprises of Port Elizabeth, Uitenhage and Despatch. Situated on the south-eastern tip of Africa, the Bay boasts 40 km of magnificent golden beaches washed by the warm water of the Indian Ocean. These beautiful beaches, along with the city’s excellent accommodation facilities, lure thousands of visitors to our shores annually. Nelson Mandela Bay offers a broad range of attractions, from history and heritage, eco-tourism, beaches, entertainment and shopping, business and wildlife viewing. With a population of 1.3 million people, the metro is a melting pot of cultures as it was in this region that Khoisan, Xhosa, English, Dutch and German people first met in South Africa.

Experience the splendour, the beauty, the spirit, the freedom, the wildlife, the culture and the friendliness of Nelson Mandela Bay. A warm welcome awaits you!
Its temperate climate and excellent wave and water conditions make Jeffreys a destination of choice for those wanting to learn to surf and try sandboarding or stand-up paddling.
Jeffreys offers excellent whale and dolphin watching, whether from the beach or boat-based, as well as easy access to wildlife & nature reserves just an hour away. Horseriding on our beaches is an amazing experience, and a walking township tour offers a wealth of cultural information and history.
An array of restaurants and coffee shops offers the tastes of our local cuisine and seafood feasts, as well as foreign flare. Local and popular music, jazz bands and other entertainment can be heard in any of the pubs around the town.
GAUTENG Gauteng, one of the nine provinces of South Africa, is a heterogeneous province that embodies a variety of cultures, and is considered South Africa’s cultural and business hub where opportunities and dreams are made. Being the smallest province in South Africa, accounting for only 1,5% of the land area, it is highly urbanised and has the largest population of any other province in the country.
mineral wealth. It is situated at a high-altitude and is home to the scenic Magaliesberg and Witwatersberg mountain ranges. The Dinokeng Game Reserve, is only an hour’s drive from Johannesburg, and is where you will be able to see the ‘’Big 5” roaming wild and free. There is also an abundance of parks and botanical gardens sprinkled throughout the province.
Gauteng has a rich cultural history dating back to 1886, when gold was first discovered in the region. The province’s name is actually derived from the Afrikaans word ‘’goud’’ which means gold, and the Sotho-Tswana locative suffix ‘-ng’. It is known in Sesotho as the ‘’Place of Gold’’.
Taxis are the cheapest form of transport in Gauteng, and offer a disordered, informal transport system to the masses. These small-scale bus services, often unmarked, operate with neither a timetable nor any formal stops. Gauteng has a developed road infrastructure and routes are usually well indicated on various sign-posts. The bus system ‘’Rea Vaya’’, which means ‘’we are going’’ in Sesotho, is another popular reliable means of public transport in Gauteng. The province also boasts a state-ofthe-art rail network, the Gautrain, which connects Pretoria and Johannesburg, as well as OR Tambo International Airport and Sandton.
Visit Gold Reef City in Gauteng where you can experience a gold tour through the variety of museums, giving you a peak into what life was like in Johannesburg in the 19th Century. There, you can also descend 75 metres underground on a tour of a mine and then enjoy a gold-pouring demonstration. Cullinan, another popular historical destination in Gauteng, is where the world’s largest diamond ever mined was found. Various tours are available around Cullinan within the mining area and around town, where you still see beautifully preserved Edwardian period buildings of that era.
A number of languages are spoken in Gauteng, mainly English, Afrikaans, IsiZulu and Sesotho. British English, as opposed to American English, is used in the education system in the province, and in South Africa. This makes Gauteng a popular destination for foreign language students to visit and improve their English language skills.
For those of you interested in human evolution and how our ancestors subsisted, then The Cradle of Humankind, which is now a World Heritage Site, is another Gauteng location that should not be missed. We are very fortunate in Gauteng to have a delightfully mild climate. It is said that Gauteng has the world’s best climates with summer days that are warm and wind free, and winter days that are crisp, clear and not too cold. This allows many of Gauteng’s residents to enjoy the outdoors right through the year, where picnicking and outdoor sports are popular. The unique geography of this province offers a combination of natural beauty and
