MUSIC NEW RELEASES Lady Gaga - Artpop Gaga fans have been eagerly awaiting new music from their favorite avantgarde performer with bated breath. Gaga collaborates with producers new and old on the 15-track LP, including RedOne, Paul "DJ White Shadow" Blair, David Guetta, Will.I.Am and Anton "Zedd" Zaslavski. The album's array of producing and DJ talent provides the disk with a range of new sounds for fans, yet staying true to the singer's dance-pop roots. On "ARTPOP," Gaga takes her music and artistry into a wild, and new direction, differing vastly from the star's wildly successful 2011 album "Born This Way" and its predecessors, "The Fame" and "The Fame Monster." The album's overall tone is decidedly less serious than the anthem-driven "Born This Way," however, it still touches on themes regarding self worth, love and empowerment.
The Killers - Direct Hits The Killers are back! 'Direct Hits' encompasses the band's biggest hits to date and also 2 new, never-before-heard tracks. The Killers have sold over 20 million albums worldwide, headlined festivals across the globe, performed at The White House, and picked up numerous awards. Each of The Killers four studio albums has yielded some of the most amazing songs of the last decade. In celebration of their first decade together, The Killers release 'Direct Hits'. A collection of singles from their four albums, plus two brand new songs, the album begins with the band's breakthrough hit - and further singles, 'Somebody Told Me', 'Smile Like You Mean It', and 'All These Things That I've Done'. 'For Reasons Unknown' via 'Sam's Town' singles, and the massive 2008 hit, 'Human' along with last years stunning 'Battle Born' album singles. A brace of brand new songs completes the set with new single 'Shot At The Night' recorded with M83's Anthony Gonzales and 'Just Another Girl'.
Robbie Williams - Swings Both Ways With a staggering 57 million album sales and 11 million singles sold, Robbie Williams has been breaking records over the course of his whole career and with this new record he has gone back to the big-band era for his tenth studio album. Robbie first released a swing album over ten years ago, and now he is at it again. Robbie, who turns 40 next year, sounds relaxed and controlled on an album of solo efforts and duets with Lily Allen, Michael Bublé, Kelly Clarkson, Olly Murs and Rufus Wainwright. ‘I always knew I’d do another swing album, and now is the perfect time. I’m enjoying showbiz and I’m enjoying my life. This album is a loving glance back to a period I feel a strong affinity with.’ says Robbie. Sure to be a number 1 album at Christmas and will find its way into many present lists this year.

HEALTH DETOXING AND FASTING - THE FACTS BEHIND THE FADS
January. Dark days plus lots of ‘fancy food’ and alcohol have made us feel fat and sludgy. But the shiny new calendar on the wall promises a fresh start. So, bombarded with more dietary information than ever, and ears ringing with those buzz words - ‘detoxing’ and ‘fasting’ - we rush out to spend our gift vouchers on books about ultimate diets and detox plans. But will they really make us healthier or slimmer? Detoxing There are numerous ‘detox diets’ that either tell you to restrict or eliminate foods for a certain period, or advocate eating just one type of super food to flush you clean. But many experts say that the idea you are full of toxins is a myth; your body already has the tools it needs to detoxify itself - the kidneys, liver, colon and skin - which all work together to remove unwanted substances from our system. If they are working correctly there is no need for us to detox ourselves through diet (or massage and colonic irrigation). Much of the detox hype sounds seductively plausible. When we’re told that our bodies are full of undesirable substances that reduce our immunity, slow our metabolism and make us retain water and weight, of course we’re horrified - and convinced we need to get rid of them as quickly as possible. But there is no solid evidence of the need for detox, or its benefits, and the British Dietetic Association has pronounced the
concept ‘irrational and unscientific’. Many detox gurus claim that the headaches, fatigue and other symptoms you may experience after a few days on a detox diet are caused by toxins, which are now released and coursing round your bloodstream before finally being flushed out. In reality, experts say these kinds of symptoms are caused by your body reacting badly to sudden deprivation of something your body is a little too used to such as caffeine, sugar or alcohol (and we don’t need a plan to know we should moderate our intake of those). Fasting Fasting - intentionally going without food - is not new. People have been fasting for religious reasons for thousands of years and there are long held beliefs that it can improve various medical conditions and general health. Many of the recent trendy fasting schemes don’t really ask you to fast at all - just to restrict your food intake on certain days or for a short period of time, claiming this makes you healthier, slimmer and even makes you live longer. There’s often some overlap with detox concepts. Does it work? Experts say you may lose a lot of weight at first, but it can be hard to maintain as you are not

fundamentally changing the way you eat. There does seem to be a connection between calorie consumption and lifespan but whether fasting gives the same results as daily moderation has yet to be proved. The dangers and downsides Dramatically reducing your calories, especially suddenly, can make you feel very ill. Cutting out or drastically reducing certain food groups can mean you lack vital nutrients. It’s pretty anti-social refusing invites on your diet days, and that in itself makes it difficult to maintain. However if having a couple of semi-fasting days a week doesn’t make you feel ill and you don’t compensate by eating unhealthily on the other days, there’s no harm doing it. So what should I do? Eat a healthy and varied diet - Choose natural foods. The more manufacturing involved in producing a product, the less likely it is to be healthy. Eat plenty of vegetables of different colours, moderate amounts of fruit and lean protein. Cut out sugar - Sugar disrupts your natural appetite control and is known to be highly addictive. Artificial sweeteners may have no calories, but it still feeds the

habit. Watch your carbohydrates - Your body processes carbs differently to protein and fat and many professionals now believe that Dr Robert Atkins was right. Besides potatoes, bread and cereal are pretty tasteless without added fat or sugar and that alone can cause you to take in more calories than you intended. Cut out or reduce alcohol - Most experts agree that a little does no harm (but wine rather than beer), but stick to the unit limits of 2 per day for women and 3 per day for men. Remember these are limits, not targets! Drink water - Hopefully we all now know this doesn’t mean drinking 8 glasses per day. But ensure your intake is not all caffeinated. Too many hot drinks often mean you overindulge on milk without realising it. Water is the most natural and the best fluid. Lose weight safely Most of us eat too much and there is evidence linking over-consumption of calories with reduced life-span and premature ageing, although the mechanism isn’t clear yet. Eat healthy ‘real’ foods, eat only when you are genuinely hungry and don’t eat too much. Your aim should be to change your eating habits permanently, not just to shift a few pounds.

TRAVEL LA TANIA SKI RESORT FOR WINTER FUN
When you're considering where to go to hit the slopes on a holiday this winter, look no further than the lovely La Tania ski resort area in the eastern part of France. Great transport links make it simple to get to the La Tania ski resort and get straight onto the pistes without delay. Originally developed for the Albertville Olympics of 1992, the resort has thrived ever since. Located at 1,400 metres above sea level, the quaint, traffic-free village has everything you need for a successful winter sports holiday. With the feel of a small town community, you'll get to know some familiar faces. The gondola that serves the village takes visitors up into the mountains where they can choose to take one of the three pistes back into the village, or connect with other lifts to take them to pistes in the surrounding area. What the resort offers With the twelve-person gondola giving skiers access to the many varied and interesting routes in the surrounding areas, the La Tania ski resort is a great place to be based. If you are just getting started in the sport, take advantage of the learners' slopes to get your ski-legs. If you want some instruction you are definitely in the right place, as the resort boasts two ski schools:
Magic in Motion and the Scole du ski Français, which is the largest in all of France. With links to the huge Three Valleys ski system, there is something for everyone. If you are a bit more experienced, you can head over to the excellent slopes of MÊribel or Courchevel. All together there are over 2,500 hectares of groomed slopes with 600 kilometres in length. Not only does the area boast a host of excellent pistes, it also has 200 lifts to ensure people keep moving, and 1,500 snow cannons to make sure the slopes are in tip-top condition. For those who are a bit more adventurous and want to really test their ability with off-piste opportunities, there is something at the La Tania ski resort for you as well. In addition to the massive number of groomed pistes, there are a good variety of off-piste slopes to navigate as well. These are not for beginners and should only be skied with an experienced guide who knows the area well. One such challenge is the amusingly named Plumber's Crack, a popular off piste trail above the Col de Loze. The Courchevel Free Ride competition is held here and it promises to be both trying and exhilarating. It's definitely worth a go if you're an off-piste aficionado.

CINEMA THE BUTLER
It’s hard to watch The Butler and not fast-forward to the awards speeches that are no doubt set to follow. Everything from the subject, to the cast, to its director’s history, screams for serious attention. The new film from American director Lee Daniels pays homeage to a real-life, long serving member of the White House staff. It’s as much about radicalisation, civil rights and US history. In many ways, it will be well deserved. Loosely based on the life of real US presidential servant Eugene Allen, The Butler stars the always-excellent Forest Whitaker as Cecil Gaines, an eyewitness to 34 years of political history.
While one of his sons (Elijah Kelley’s Charlie) goes off to Vietnam, the other (David Oyelowo’s Louis) pops up in key moments in US black history, from the Freedom Rides of the early ’60s, through his friendship with Martin Luther King and the Black Panther movement. (In real life, Allen had one son, not involved in any of the above.) Perhaps Daniels’ real strength is in his risky casting choices. In his world Mariah Carey doesn’t wear makeup, Lenny Kravitz can act, Jane Fonda is a Republican icon, Oprah Winfrey is a chain-smoking drunk and Cuba Gooding Jr. is once again in an Oscar-hopeful movie.
Raised in a pre-Civil Rights Deep South before moving to Washington DC, Cecil, then a child, watched as his father was shot by bigoted locals following the brutal rape of his mother.
Yet somehow it all works, The Butler serving up major talent in relatively small roles – the likes of Vanessa Redgrave, Robin Williams, John Cusack and Alan Rickman also flit through – keeping up the quality in passing moments.
As he rises from cotton picker to the confidante of half a dozen presidents, ultimately to witness the first black man to be voted leader of the free world, his story is contrasted with that of the American Civil Rights Movement through the eyes of his children.
Then there’s Whitaker, steadfast, still, understated, commanding your attention, managing to be presidential himself in an ostensibly subservient role. Definitely recommended, provided you don’t get too excited.

What is Myofascial Release? Myofascial Release (from myo, muscle, and fascia, band) is a unique approach to manual therapy pioneered by US physiotherapist John Barnes. At its simplest, MFR involves gentle stretching of tight, painful areas in the client's body using slow, sustained pressure or subtle traction. At its most profound, it reaches deep beneath these superficial restrictions to unwind the body's unconscious holding patterns which, though we may not know it, are often the root cause of our dis-ease. Fascia forms a continuous 3D web throughout the body, providing a framework of support for the skeleton, muscles, organs, nerves and blood vessels. Without fascia to hold us up we would collapse in a heap. A healthy fascial system is relaxed and resilient, acting as our body's shock absorber. After injury, however and injury can be both physical and emotional - our fascia begins to tighten and harden in the areas affected. Over time, as the body tries to compensate for these restrictions, it creates further imbalance and tension at sites ever more distant from that of the original trauma. Thus a problem which originated in the

knee/hip could eventually cause pain in the shoulder/neck, and vice versa. Research suggests that the body remembers everything that happens to it and stores that information in the fascial tissue. These subconscious memories of past experience may be associated with postural positions, actions or emotions. The body/mind is also capable of creating habits and bracing patterns to protect us from physical and/or emotional pain and discomfort. While these holding patterns are essential short-term coping mechanisms they can persist into the longer term, resulting in a new set of problems for the body. MFR practitioners seek out underlying patterns of fascial restriction and follow them to source. We do not treat by numbers. No two clients are identical, even if they present with apparently identical problems. Find the pain, yes - but look elsewhere for the cause. For more information on how MFR can help promote health and wellbeing, contact Jane Meek, MFR practitioner, on 07759 182236.

Myofascial release (MFR) uses gentle pressure and traction to unlock restrictions in the body’s fascial system or connective tissue. MFR tracks these restrictions to source, addressing the root cause of a problem rather than just the symptoms.

INTERIORS SIX WAYS TO MAKE MONEY FROM YOUR HOME Forget cash in the attic there’s money in every brick, stone or tile of your house, and even in the garden and garage. Katherine Sorrell explains how to make pounds from your property. 1. Rent a room One in ten homeowners now earns extra cash by letting a spare room to a lodger, according to Santander. You can also rent to commuters, Mondays to Fridays. How much can I make? Average weekly rent from a lodger is around £90, says spareroom.co.uk. Pros - You can make up to £4,250 a year tax-free under the Government’s Rent a Room scheme. A good lodger can be a friend, share the housework and keep an eye on the place when you’re away. Cons - A bad lodger can be a nightmare - in your space, may not pay the rent and hard to remove. Home insurance may go up. Need to know - Obtain references, and have a written agreement about rent, bills and how the house is shared. www.landlordzone.co.uk is a good source of information. You may need permission from your mortgage lender and, if you have one, your leaseholder. Tenants should obtain permission to rent a spare room from the landlord. 2. Be a host for language students Many English language schools, and some universities, need ‘host’ families for their students, to provide a bedroom and meals and make them feel at home. It’s often just for a week or so, but sometimes longer. How much can I make? - From around £100 per student per week, before expenses. Pros - A great way to learn about other cultures and meet interesting people, and they’re not with you for long.
Cons - Not a reliable, yearround income. Need to know - Tell your home contents insurer. Obtain a written contract with the language school. 3. Run a B&B Worth considering if you have a spare room or two and live in a desirable area. How much can I make? Depends on location, number of rooms, quality of accommodation and food. About £35 per room per night is a minimum. Pros - Meet interesting people. Open for guests when it suits you. Cons - Early starts and lots of cooking and cleaning. Upfront costs to convert your home. Then there’s marketing, insurance and bookkeeping. Need to know - You may need planning permission, or alterations to meet building regulations. Tell your mortgage lender. Don’t be overly optimistic: start by aiming for a 35-40% occupancy rate. 4. Rent your parking space Rent your drive or garage to a commuter, people attending the theatre or a sports event. Advertise in the local paper or online. How much can I make? You could earn more than £200 a month, depending on your proximity to offices, train/tube stations, stadiums and so on, and what local parking and restrictions there are. Pros - Extra money for very little effort. Cons - Getting rid of someone who stops paying but continues to park could be tricky. Need to know - You can’t rent out a resident permit holder space, and tenants with a parking space can’t rent it out. Draw up a simple contract, tell your home insurer, and check that the parker has insurance in case he damages your property while behind the wheel.

5. Rent out the whole house You could move out of your property (live with family or friends, or rent somewhere cheap) and turn it into a holiday home in the summer. If you live near a venue for sporting events or festivals you could rent it out to visitors. Or you could even rent it to long-term tenants. How much can I make? Depends on the size and location of your house: a twobed Cornish cottage, for example, should make more than £500 a week in the summer. Pros - Good money. Cons - Cost of decorating and maintenance. Lots of organisation, from clearing out the house and marketing, to dealing with changeovers. Need to know - Obtain public
liability insurance and comply with fire regulations. Tell your insurer and declare your income to the taxman. 6. Be a movie location Your home could be a star. All sorts of properties are used, from council flats to country estates. How much can I make? From about £500 per day for stills photography to £2,500 for a bigbudget movie. Pros - Interesting and excellent money. Cons - Not a reliable source of income. Could be lots of disruption, and neighbours may object. Need to know - Most demand is for large houses with good parking within the M25. Signing up with an agency is free, but you’ll pay a commission.

Are there tasks or activities they struggle with or have stopped doing? Don't reach a conclusion too quickly though!
It can be overwhelming, wondering where to start when first considering care for a loved one You don't have to wait for a crisis or an illness to happen before you start looking for support. It could simply be that a loved one is growing older and needs a little help. Planning ahead and introducing a little support, like help with shopping errands, light housekeeping and companionship - someone to have a friendly chat with, can really help prevent other problems developing. A rule of thumb is that by the time you're 40 your parents will be approaching 70. It's a good time to start thinking about raising the topic. Here are a few tips to help you.
Start observing your loved one with an open mind.
Start a conversation - sooner the better. Don't wait until you've hit a crisis. Discuss and ask for their opinions. If they acknowledge that things are a little harder now you can explore solutions together. If on the other hand they don't think there's a problem then use what you've observed as examples. Forget baby talk - Don't use patronising tones or disrespectful language. It will only make them feel more resistant and less willing to communicate. Maximise their independence - Move forward to a wholesome solution that maintains and maximises your loved ones independence, as much as possible and don’t be afraid to ask for help. At Home Instead, we have more information that covers when and how to start raising the topic and the best ways to approach it in a sensitive manner. BEAUTY BREAK YOUR BAD HABITS It’s the start of another new year, which means that there has never been a better time to leave your bad beauty habits in the past. If you are guilty of any of our top 5, then you will need to act fast to break them in time for 2014. Bad Beauty Habit 1 - Sleeping with your make-up on Never - no matter how tired you are - go to bed with any trace of make-up still on your face. Mascara that hasn’t been removed will quickly dry-out your eyelashes, making them brittle and weak. Last night’s foundation will clog your pores, leaving you prone to nasty break-outs. The Solution - Establish a cleansing routine Make cleansing your face a top priority. Dedicate 15 minutes in the evening to your skin: cleanse, tone, moisturise and apply your face and eye creams. Always keep a pack of cleansing wipes next to your bed, so that if you do return home after a big night out and skip the routine, you can still attempt to remove some of your make-up. Bad Beauty Habit 2 - Using heat stylers on your hair everyday If you straighten, curl or blow dry your hair every day you will be causing damage to your tresses that could result in split ends, dried-out lengths and tired, dulllooking locks.
The Solution - Try something new Try a new style - maybe sweep your hair up, or use hair accessories to attain a different look. Find the right products to cater to your needs; if you want straight lengths then use a specially formulated straightening shampoo and conditioner. You don’t have to say goodbye to your much-loved heat styler altogether. Instead, you should ensure that you use it more sparingly and don’t forget to spritz your hair
with a good quality heat protecting product first. Bad Beauty Habit 3 - Using make-up that is past its best Some plead ignorance, others say they can’t let go, but whatever excuse you have for not throwing that ancient mascara away won’t cut it when you hear the truth about out-of-date make-up. Although your cosmetics look innocent enough, after being opened they offer a perfect breeding ground for bacteria. And over time, if you don’t keep a careful eye on your products, you can end up suffering from some seriously nasty eye infections, skin irritations and blemishes. The Solution - Regularly clear-out your make-up bag Mascaras, liquid eyeliners and lip glosses should be thrown away every 3 or 4 months. Foundation is ok for around 12 months, as are lipsticks and eyeshadows.
To advertise call Scott or Natalie on 0141 945 4210 or email: info@sbdirectory.co.uk
37
Bad Beauty Habit 4 - Stuck in a make-up rut You’ve been applying your make-up in the same way for as long as you can remember. You haven’t updated the colour of your cosmetics for many years and you’ll only ever buy certain products. It sounds like you’re stuck in a make-up rut. The Solution - Seek a professional opinion The easiest way to break this bad beauty habit is to seek some professional help. Visit any one of the top beauty counters in your favourite department store and ask for a make-over. Most consultants will be more than happy to help you find a new look and often this service is completely free, although you will most likely be encouraged to try some of their latest products.
The Solution - Pay a visit to the salon You can’t beat professionally sculpted brows. Whether you choose to have them waxed, tweezed or plucked, your beautician will assess your needs and leave them looking perfect. January is filled with New Year resolutions, so make 2014 the year you dump your beauty bad habits for good.
Bad Beauty Habit 5 - Overlooking your eyebrows Over-plucked brows are as bad as over-grown brows; many women make mistakes when it comes to one of their most important facial features. Eyebrows serve as a frame for your eyes and by creating the right shape you can instantly lift your face, draw attention to your eyes and look altogether younger and more beautiful.

FINANCE HOW TO COMPLAIN AND MAKE MONEY
Good Outcome from Bad Service When you purchase something, whether it’s a holiday or a hat, you are entering into a contract of exchange. This means that the seller has agreed to meet your 'statutory rights'. If these are not met or you’re not happy with the service, you can make a complaint. What a lot of people don’t realise is that there’s nothing to stop you asking for compensation, either in the form of money or goods. Complain about goods and services Under the Sale of Goods Act 1979, shops must provide goods which are of satisfactory quality, as described, fit for purpose and last a reasonable length of time. They must provide services which are carried out with reasonable care and skill within a reasonable time and at a decent cost. The way to complain about bad goods or services is: Step 1: Make a complaint in person or over the phone as soon as possible. Inform them that you know your statutory rights as a consumer. Step 2: If you don’t receive a satisfactory response, complain in writing to the head office. Ask for compensation for your time and effort (suggest an amount of money) as well as having your item mended or replaced. Send letters by recorded delivery to keep proof of your complaint. Step 3: If you still aren’t satisfied, write again and be persistent. Those who write a third time usually receive at least some of what they’ve asked for.
Complain about train tickets You can be compensated between half and your entire ticket price if a train is delayed for more than half an hour (depending on the cause of the delay). Not all train operators have the same policy but the National Rail Conditions of Carriage are the underlying rules for train travel in Britain and have minimum compensation regulations. How to do it: Step 1: Write to the train operator. Forms are available from the ticket office, their website or from www.traindelays.co.uk. Step 2: Take your complaint further. If you’re unhappy with the response from National Rail, you can seek independent passenger representation from www.passengerfocus.org.uk Claims will need to be made within 28 days and the original ticket must be sent with your complaint. Compensation is usually paid in rail vouchers. Complain about insurance companies and financial services. If you’re unhappy about the service you have received from a financial company, it’s easier to complain than it used to be. Step 1: Complain directly to the company in writing, explaining why you're not happy and what you want the business to do in return. Send copies of paperwork and keep a record of your correspondence. Make sure you complain as soon as things go wrong.

They will look at your complaint and see if it’s appropriate to compensate you. However in most cases they will try and avoid this so be persistent. Be patient though as a business is allowed to take up to eight weeks to resolve the complaint itself. Step 2: If you disagree, you can ask the Financial Ombudsman Service (FOS) www.financialombudsman.org.uk to look at your case for free. FOS are an independent industry watchdog which resolves individual complaints that consumers and financial organisations aren't able to resolve themselves. They have upheld 49% of car insurance complaints and 61% of warranty complaints in favour of the consumer in the last year alone, so you have a chance. Claim back PPI Millions of people across the country have been missold Payment Protection Insurance (PPI) and have claimed back thousands of pounds in compensation. The average payout for PPI is now £2,750 per person and the highest payout to date has reached nearly £65,000. PPI is a form of insurance designed to compensate you

if you lose your income due to sickness, an accident or redundancy. Banks and lenders sold the insurance to people who didn’t need it or were not eligible to claim. If you think you’ve been mis-sold PPI you can claim back the money yourself free of charge rather than go through a claims company who will take 30% or more of your compensation win. Step 1: Gather your paperwork and details and make a formal complaint to your bank or lender. You can download the forms from the Citizens Advice Bureau, www.adviceguide.org.uk. Step 2: If the bank or lender does not resolve your complaint, you can refer it for free to the FOS via their website or by calling 0800 0234 567 (or 0300 123 9123 from a mobile). Fun Fact: About 34m PPI policies have been sold since 2001, with almost £14bn so far set aside by the banks and building societies in compensation.

MOTORS BENTLEY - FLYING SPUR
Individuals of high net worth are currently spoilt for choice when it comes to picking a luxurious four-door saloon to transport them to important business meetings and the occasional cruise to Monaco. But two British marques remain the go-to guys when it comes to exquisite craftsmanship and superlative drives... One is a certain Rolls-Royce and the other is Bentley, which just so happens to have a brand new Flying Spur in showrooms. What is it? An updated version of the luxurious Flying Spur that was first unveiled to the world in 2005. Many hours have been spent working on a new identity for the model that doesn’t shy too far away from the iconic yet understated lines of a Bentley but adds a modern edge to keep it abreast with rivals from the UK and Germany. The levels of sumptuous, handcrafted detail remain amongst some of the best in the world but an injection of new technology aims to appease the slightly younger, more gadget-savvy buyer. What’s under the bonnet? The same almighty 6-litre twin-turbocharged W12 unit that can be found in the outgoing model but with a few technological tweaks that reduce fuel consumption by
13.5 per cent and boost performance figures. Top speed is now 200mph, with Bentley marketing the monster as ‘the world’s fastest saloon’. That claim becomes quite apparent when the right pedal is pinned to the carpet as, despite weighing nearly three tonnes, it can despatch the 0-60mph sprint in just 4.3 seconds. After listening to feedback from customers, Bentley has slaved tirelessly to decrease the encroaching grumble of the mighty W12, so noise in the cabin has decreased by an impressive 40 per cent. What’s the spec like? A basic Flying Spur will set you back £140,900 so naturally specification is going to be on the generous side but, if one goes wild with the options list, prices can easily tickle the £170,000 mark. Basic W12 models come with opulent, 14-way adjustable seats, multi-zone climate control, rear-seat entertainment units and swathes of hand-stitched leather and natural wood veneers. A W12 Mulliner version, that includes bespoke interior hide colours, diamond quilting on the seats, embroidered Bentley logos on the seats and sporty drilled alloy pedals and knurled gear lever, is available at a premium. To give an indication of the extent of possible luxurious specifications, the options list includes a lamb’s wool boot carpet at the cost of £600.

Any rivals? The Flying Spur will always face fierce competition from the Rolls-Royce Ghost, a car whose badge arguably carries more gravitas amongst discerning customers,
but also an equally eye-watering price tag. Bentley also cites the likes of BMW and Mercedes as key rivals as well as the sportier luxury saloons such as the Maserati Gran Turismo and the Aston Martin Rapide. Land Rover is also making waves in the luxury market with the Range Rover - a vehicle that is just as comfortable as the Spur but can also tackle a mountainside if the mood takes. What’s it like to drive? Effortless power is the name of the game here, the big Bentley whisking its occupants to high speeds without those inside the leathery cocoon knowing any different. The suspension does a great job of wafting over cracks and bumps through town and manages to steam roller any imperfections in motorway surfaces - it’s an absolute joy to be driven in. But the real surprise comes when you actually slide behind the wheel and take control of the Spur. It feels big and heavy but not in a negative way, the car encourages a sensible driving style around town but the well-judged steering lightens up at slow speeds, making tight roads and tricky roundabouts a breeze to navigate. Firm up the suspension, slip the gear lever into sport mode and the twisting A-road becomes a fairground ride. It’s in no way a Lamborghini but the three-tonne cruiser handles with little body roll through corners and blistering pace on the straights. According to those who sell these machines, 90 per cent of Bentley owners drive themselves and we can see why. The verdict It is very difficult to find fault with such an expensive vehicle that is lavished with Bentley levels of attention to detail and there is no denying this is one very
beautiful, very accomplished machine. Slight niggles would surround the additional tech elements with many of the menu screens proving fiddly and unintuitive. The Bluetooth phone connection requires too many stages to operate fully and we struggled with the on-board WiFi. Eagle-eyed customers may also notice that a large amount of technology is carried over from other models in the Volkswagen group and those parting with £160,000 probably don’t want the Sat Nav from a Skoda. Tech aside, it is classic Bentley, boasting understated yet elegant looks, impressive power and interior comfort that is hard to find anywhere else. HEALTH AVOID A FESTIVE HANGOVER
December 31, New Years Eve. What are your plans for tonight? Perhaps like millions of others around the globe, your wanting to ring in the New Year by having a few drinks with friends and loved ones. Unfortunately, you have to work in the am. Should you just deal with a hangover or is there a cure? Whether or not you consider yourself a seasoned drinker or someone that only indulges once in a while, we all suffer the same consequence. "The Hangover". I'm not here to tell you to drink plenty of water before you pass out. Rather, I'd like to pass on a few tips that may lessen tomorrows migraine. EAT BEFORE YOU DRINK We've all went out drinking on an empty stomach before, but why do you think it is so important to fuel up before heading out? Having a full stomach before you start drinking aids in absorbing alcohol which in turn slows the rate of intoxication. Slowing down intoxication means alcohol is not getting in to the blood stream as rapidly, which can reduce the chance of a hangover. Foods high in starch like pasta and bread are the best to consume before a planned night out. MULTI-VITAMINS B-COMPLEX Vitamin B-12 is probably one of the best defenses for helping the headache. B-12 aids in de-toxifying the
body, not just during but after drinking as well. And really, is there a downside to giving your body some much needed supplements such as vitamins? STAY HYDRATED A beer as well as a spirit contain approximately one ounce of alcohol. The human body can process about one ounce of alcohol every hour. For us seasoned drinkers one beer per hour just wont cut it. At times, it is not hard to push 3 maybe 4 beers down within that time span. It is extremely good practice to have a couple drinks, have a water and repeat. This will not only slow you down and re-hydrate you but it also serves one other important purpose. Alcohol is a diuretic increases the flow of urine- which means water is lost from your kidneys and not reabsorbed back into the bloodstream. Therefore the best water to alcohol ratio would be 1:1. COLDER THE BETTER Liquids are absorbed into the body at room temperature. Therefore a warm beer would obviously be absorbed much faster than a cold one. Which is pointless to say, I'm sure most of us don't like to sit down and enjoy a warm beer on a hot day. YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR Cheaper spirits and beers are going to contain a lot

more impurities than the more costly liquors. Darker beers and rums also tend to harbor more impurities. The body has a much harder time breaking these impurities down so in essence, the lighter the drink the lighter the hangover. ASPIRIN BEFORE BED? NOT A GREAT IDEA When combined with alcohol aspirin can irritate your stomach causing ulcers and bleeding problems. As though you didn't damage it enough the night before. Lots of water or isotonic drinks before you pass out is key. Isotonic drinks are great because they replenish the body of lost nutrients and electrolytes. CONSUME PLENTY OF ANTIOXIDANTS TOMATOES? Believe it or not tomatoes are high in vitamins B & C. These are the body’s primary antioxidant nutrient. This is why virgin caesars, bloody marys and pizza can be great hangover remedies. Tomatoes are also high in potassium, a mineral that is lost while urinating and contributes to the DT's that your feeling. Bananas, V8, tomato juice, and fresh strawberries are very enriched with antioxidants and are all excellent choices to consume the dreaded day after.

THE MORNING AFTER You obviously don't want to wake up or even open your eyes for that matter. That's a good thing. Sleep as late as possible... it is one of the best known cures. Like I had to tell you. Your head is pounding because of the extreme dehydration your body is suffering. This is no different than how you would feel if you were stranded on a desert island. The outer covering of your brain "dura matter" shrinks and causes extreme headaches. What about all the water I drank yesterday? Remember, alcohol is a diuretic you probably urinated the majority of it out of your body. Your aches and pains should subside as soon as you replenish yourself with more. There is probably never going to be a one hundred percent cure for a hangover, so the best thing you can do is try to stay on the preventative side of things. Eat before going out. Take multivitamins and B-12 supplements, stay as hydrated as possible, drink cold higher end liquors, and consume plenty of antioxidants. If all else fails there is always the infamous "hair of the dog" just wake up and keep on drinking. Remember, this is only a temporary solution to the problem and the dog is bound to bite back. Most likely twice as hard!

GARDENING
KITCHENS FOR LIVING
SOWING TIME texture. However, if you are using multi-purpose compost, you’ll need to either break up any lumps carefully with your hands or sieve it.
January is almost here and it’s the perfect time to start sowing seeds in trays and pots. But how do you make sure that yours germinate then produce seedlings and plants which thrive? A shopping list for first time sowers should be: Good quality seed and cuttings compost. This will be finer in texture and easier to sow seeds in than multipurpose compost. Some seed half-trays, about 5” x 8”. A heated propagator, a clear propagator lid to go over the trays or a small unheated propagator. This will ensure that young plants don’t dry out or are subjected to temperature fluctuations. A dibber to make it easy to transplant the seedlings into a new home. If you’re budget conscious, you can always use a pencil. Some small pots into which you can transplant the seedlings and allow them to grow to full sized plants. If you buy seed and cuttings compost it’s rarely necessary to sieve it as it has a very fine and even
Depending on the types of seeds you have chosen, you will need to sow them at different depths. Some seeds are tiny and are best scattered over the surface. If they’re very small and difficult to handle, then I find it best to mix the seeds with a large quantity of dry horticultural sand. This makes it much easier to spread them thinly and evenly over the surface and makes them less inclined to suffer from damping off. Other seeds are best sown in drills; make sure you use the suggested depth. Once the seeds are in place, in most cases you need to cover them with compost to the required depth. A few seeds actually germinate best if allowed access to daylight and therefore need to be sown on the surface. With these it’s advisable to cover the surface of the tray with cling film to stop it drying out too rapidly and causing erratic germination. I like to put the seeds in place and then moisten the compost. Rather than use a watering can which can displace the seeds, place the seed trays in a sink or tray containing about 1cm of water and allow the compost to soak up the water. Once the compost is just moist you should stand the trays in a position where any excess water can drain off freely. Then, if necessary, put the trays in a heated propagator.

When it comes to watering the seeds, use mains water as water butts often harbour some of the diseasecausing organisms which cause damping off, the fatal condition where the seedlings appear to suddenly flop and keel over. Provided your compost is sterilised and you use mains water and clean trays, damping off is much less likely to be a problem. Next, label the trays carefully using a pen which is not water soluble. It’s easy to forget which is which or for the trays to become muddled up. Always watch the seed trays carefully and check them regularly to ensure that the compost is adequately moist. Once the majority of the seedlings have appeared, it’s usually not long before you need to prick them out. Generally this is carried out when the first true leaves appear. When the seedling first comes above ground you will see the ‘seed leaves’ which are relatively sturdy looking and rounded in shape. Then above this come the first true leaves which are typical of that particular plant. When pricking out, handle the seedlings very carefully, never by their stems or true leaves, but always by the
COL OUR F E N C E
seed leaves. Before you start to ease them out, make sure that the compost is adequately moist, so that the roots move readily without damage and that you have already prepared pots for transfer. To avoid rotting, always transplant seedlings so that they are at the same depth as they were in the seed tray. If you find that your seedlings have become rather leggy and drawn, this is usually because they’re not receiving enough natural light; move the trays onto a south or west facing windowsill and perhaps place some tinfoil covered cardboard around the back of the tray to reflect in some extra daylight. If you have a greenhouse then seedlings are much less likely to become leggy.

TECH GUIDE FIT FOR PURPOSE
Gadgets that give you a handle on your health A gadget a day keeps the doctor away: according to a recent survey, one-third of people believe that using health and fitness gadgets have made them healthier and reduced the number of times they’ve needed to visit the doctor. Health and fitness gadgets are big business, whether it’s trendy fitness trackers such as the Nike FuelBand (£129) and the Fitbit Force (pricing tbc, but likely to be similar) or more serious devices such as blood glucose meters and body composition analysers. As tech becomes smarter, smaller and cheaper, DIY health monitoring has never been easier or more affordable.
understand charts and tables to help you spot patterns. That’s not all you can monitor. A trip to Maplin or Amazon uncovers all kinds of health monitoring gadgets, including blood pressure monitors that can upload data to your PC (around £39), finger pulse oximeters (£27) and fully digital heart rate monitors (around £29), and you can also buy bathroom scales that analyse your body composition: for around £30 you can pick up scales that can tell you not just how heavy or light you are, but what your BMI (Body Mass Index) is and what percentage of your body is made of fat. Scales such as the Omron BF508 also have a guest mode, so visitors won’t see your vital statistics.
Diabetics need to monitor their glucose levels regularly, and there are lots of gadgets designed to help, such as the Lifescan One Touch UltraMini (around £33) and the Bayer Contour NEXT USB (£29.99). Both devices enable you to analyse your blood glucose levels and can store the results - 50 in the case of the UltraMini and 2,000 with the Contour NEXT. The latter device can also plug into your computer to create easy-to-
Using health monitors has become something of a craze, and it even has a name: Quantified Self, or QS for short. Devotees use gadgets to monitor pretty much everything, so they’ll invest in Wi-Fi scales such as the Withings Smart Body Analyzer (£129), which monitors weight, fat, heart rate and even air quality, and which automatically uploads that data to your personal health website.

They’ll also wear devices such as the Jawbone Up (£99), a bracelet that’s designed to be worn 24/7 and which records the steps you take, the activity you undertake and even your sleeping patterns. The accompanying software enables you to add additional information such as your food and drink intake, and it translates all of that data into graphs and charts so you can see how well you’re doing and track your progress towards goals, such as losing weight, running faster or just being out and about more. Many such gadgets also enable you to share your progress on social networks such as Facebook and Twitter. Devices such as the Jawbone Up, Nike FuelBand and Fitbit Force are designed to work with smartphones, using low-power radio signals to share data with compatible apps. That’s a growing market, and stacks of firms are jumping on the bandwagon: 60beat offers the £29 BLUE heart rate monitor for iPhone and iPad users, AliveCore has a £170 heart monitor for iPhone 5 users and there are various connected blood glucose monitors, pulse monitors and fitness trackers for both iOS and Android. While the various devices differ, they all have the same idea in common: by recording the data, they enable you (or your doctor) to have a much better picture of your health.

HEALTH TOP TEN TIPS FOR TIP TOP TOES
1. Inspect your feet daily. This is one of the most important foot care tips because it can detect changes and problems may be prevented. If you have any signs of trauma like redness or blisters, cuts, cracks swelling or color changes you should have these assessed by a podiatrist immediately. Using a mirror can help you see all areas on the bottoms of your feet, particularly if you have problems with mobility. 2. If the shoe fits? Advice like this may seem like common sense but there are many people out there who wear the wrong size or style of shoe. This can later cause a
lot of problems with your feet. Be certain that your shoes fit with room to wiggle your toes. Always look and feel inside your shoes before putting them on, especially if you have diabetes. This is in case there are any foreign objects there, such as gravel, that could cause sores or irritation which could lead to complex problems. Always wear clean and well-fitting socks. 3. Toe the line Wash your feet everyday and make sure that you dry them thoroughly paying particular attention between the toes. Making sure you have dried between the toes will minimise the risk of cracks in the skin and secondary fungal infection. Over time your feet will feel and look much better. 4. Nail Care Always cut your nails straight across and then smooth the edges with an emery board or nail file. If reaching your nails comfortably is a problem, have your podiatrist do this for you. This will also provide an opportunity for an overall foot check. 5. PLEASE! Do not self-treat Always see a podiatrist for corns, callus or ingrown toenails. Do not attempt to selftreat these conditions. Self treatment can often lead to secondary infections or delays in healing. 6. Prevent Cracking Having dry skin on your feet is common. Applying cream daily will help prevent dry skin from cracking but avoid putting cream between your toes. Cream in the crevices can make skin more susceptible to infection. Creams which contain urea will be much more effective in treating dry skin.

7. Keep the blood flowing Gentle daily exercise can help with circulation problems. Using the muscles in your lower leg activates what is known as the ‘muscle pump’ which helps return blood back up the leg. If you experience cramping of your calves while walking you must discuss this with your podiatrist. Lower leg cramping can be a sign of intermittent claudication, which is one of the first signs of impaired circulation. 8. Keeping it moderate Protect your feet from extremes in temperature. Keep bath water temperate in the 85-90 F degree range (30-32 C). If you have diabetes or know that you have neuropathy, you may not be able to feel if the water is too hot, and you could suffer serious burns. Never use heating pads or hot water bottles if you have loss of sensation of your feet. Protect your feet from temperatures that are too cold if you already know you have a circulation problem. Prolonged exposure to cold can decrease circulation in your feet even more. 9. Pump it up Ask your healthcare professional about an exercise program that's right for you. If you need advice on the right footwear for your chosen activity your podiatrist will be able to explain the differences and help you choose from the vast range of shoes out there. The right shoe for the job is vital to reduce the risk of problems. 10. Last and definitely not least It's so important to practice preventative care like the tips listed here, every day. If you notice anything that does not look normal please arrange an assessment with your podiatrist immediately. Prevention is always better than cure, so discuss any concerns regarding your feet with your podiatrist. The Podiatrist will explain why your feet are the way they are, what you can do to prevent injury and keep you comfortable for longer. BOOKS COLD ENOUGH FOR SNOW
Tom Jones once sang ‘Baby, it’s Cold Outside’, so as December descends, why not curl up in front of the fire with our selection of books that will chill you to the bone…one way or another! KingSnow Falling on Cedars David Guterson With his hauntingly beautiful descriptions of the wild nature of America’s Pacific Northwest, Guterson’s story of a murder soon reveals itself to be one of a complex love triangle. It’s 1954 and well-respected local fisherman, Carl Heine is found dead in one of his own fishing nets. Local Japanese-American, Kabuo Miyamoto is accused of killing him. In the grip of a terrible snowstorm, the town of San Piedro is forced into dealing with its recent history, and a wave of AntiJapanese sentiment following World War 2. To complicate the matter, the local newspaper reporter is in love with Kabuo’s wife. If the snow falls and covers everything, is all forgotten?.
The Spy Who Came in from the Cold, John le Carré Spymaster le Carré’s thriller has stood the test of time with reading audiences continuing to be gripped by the powerful combination of love and betrayal that would leave Daniel Craig running crying to his mummy. Set in 1960s Berlin, spy Alex Leamas is basically ready to throw in the towel. Of course, ‘one final assignment’ always spells disaster ahead. Is this really a case of ‘mission impossible’ and will he live to walk away?
Cold Mountain, Charles Frazier This is the story of two people: injured Civil War veteran Inman, and Ada, the woman who waits for him. To reach her, Inman must leave his hospital bed and walk the long way home to Cold Mountain. Of course, his epic journey means he encounters many a strange character along the way. Ada, meanwhile, has her own internal struggles to contend with as she battles with her upbringing and the future that Cold Mountain represents. This brilliant and beautifully-written book is one everyone should read at least once in their lifetime. You’ll be transported, without ever leaving your armchair.
Into Thin Air, John Krakauer Sometimes the most extraordinary stories we read are those that are true. This is certainly the case in Krakauer’s account of 24 hours of hell at the top of Mount Everest. With photos documenting the scale of the ‘murderous storm’ that bore down on Krakauer and his fellow climbers, it’s clear to see why five lost their lives. Dealing with the guilt that comes from surviving such a disaster whilst others didn’t, Krakauer’s writing is incredibly compelling and the retelling of the 1996 disaster will leave you gasping.
