PUTTING ALIGNMENT IS KEY Do you feel like your putting stroke is perfect but you’re missing too many putts? Then you’re among the majority of golfers who don’t square the putter face perfectly at address; and if you’re not aiming where you think you are the chances of your ball finding the hole are greatly diminished. To increase your odds of squaring the putter face follow this easy routine. Once you’ve addressed the ball, stand up straight and extend your arms upward until the putter face is at eye level, then set it square (this works more effectively because your eyes tend to fall offline when you bend over at address) Maintain this grip and lower the putter back down to the ball; there’s your line . Once you’re properly aligned its then time to choose the line, and if you’re having problems in this area just remember these four basic facts:

SUMMER OR WINTER? THE FRENCH ALPS The French Alps are famous for their winter ski season, but during the summer this dramatic and scenic area offers even more to do. But let's focus on the popular winter season. Many people who have never skied are put off by the idea of going somewhere even colder than the UK during the winter months. However, the cold in the Alps is not like the damp, grey winters we get at home. The air is generally dry and, of course, rain falls as snow so the bone-chilling dampness you might be used to doesn't exist. The sun shines on most days which, with the reflection on the snow, makes for really bright and often surprisingly warm conditions. The mountain restaurants have roaring fires and are well insulated. Clothes Like many sports, it will be necessary to have a range of clothes and equipment before you get on the slopes. Although it is possible to buy technical and very expensive skiwear, you can actually get away with one or two good pieces, and use normal clothes for the rest. The Alps don't actually get that cold particularly if you choose a lower resort (e.g. Portes de Soleil). Even in December and early January when the temperatures

may stay well below freezing all day, adopting good underclothes then several outer layers of normal clothes with a good quality jacket will keep you very warm. By the time you get to the end of February you will be shedding all those extra layers anyway. If you are taking children, definitely buy secondhand from your local paper or from EBay. However gloves are probably the one thing worth paying more for, and good sunglasses and goggles are essential too. Equipment You can hire boots and skis/snowboards in the resort. If you are only going for one week each year, you simply won't get the return on your investment if you buy, and lugging skis through an airport is a real hassle. Many low-cost airlines will charge you extra for ski carriage, and then you'll have the additional cost of annual maintenance when you return. Most hire shops offer very good quality and well-maintained ski equipment. Getting there Many of the low-cost airlines run extra routes during the ski season, and if you book early enough flights for under ÂŁ60 a head are easily obtained, often flying from local airports.

Alternatively - if this is your first time - you could look at doing a package. However watch out for the transfer times as it can be a long coach journey from the airport. Accommodation Hotels are more prevalent in the upmarket areas and can be very expensive. In family resorts you will have two main choices: a catered chalet, or a self-catering. Apartment or chalet Catered chalets include your morning food, afternoon tea and cakes and an evening meal often including wine. The chef usually has one night off each week allowing you the opportunity to try a local restaurant. For convenience, economy and sociability catered chalets are a very popular choice, allowing you maximum skiing time. However you will have to work to their timetable and if you like a lazy start you will m i s s breakfast a n d probably have to make your own way to the slopes.

April and around Easter - is one of the best times to go and quite underrated. It will be warm, and although the melting snow may mean you have to finish by around 3pm, it's generally quiet so you'll get maximum skiing time up till then. Don't forget to check your travel insurance policy to ensure that you have winter sports coverage. Being rescued from the mountains is very expensive. If you arrive in resort and realise you are not covered however, you can ask for insurance to be included in your lift ticket. There is something truly magical about snow whatever your age, and the combination of bright sunshine, deep blue skies, roaring fires and an exhilarating sport make for a real lift in your spirits during the long British winter.

Apartments and chalets give more flexibility and particularly for those with very young children, may be a better option. However much of the French accommodation is small so unless you are on a particularly tight budget rent something with more beds than you need so that you get the extra living space. When to go/when to avoid The ski lifts open the week before Christmas (conditions permitting). The week before Christmas is quiet, but the Christmas and New Year week is very busy and can be chilly. Also the snow conditions are unreliable at this time: in 2006 there was very little snow, yet in 2007 they had the best start to the season in 10 years. January is a particularly good time: accommodation is cheaper, slopes are quieter, and the snow conditions are usually excellent. Be realistic about what you can afford to pay and map out a repayment plan. If the numbers don’t add up, look at your options. Cut your costs Look at your bank statement. Where is your cash going? Where can you make savings? Look into switching energy providers, assessing your mortgage package, cutting up store cards, selling some belongings, perhaps down-grading to a more economic car. Even the little things like sacrificing those mid-morning trips to the coffee shop can make a massive difference.

Increase your income Are you due a pay rise? Have a word with your boss if you think so. Are you paying too much tax? Are you entitled to benefits or tax credits? Do you have children living with you of a working age who can contribute? What about a second job? Perhaps you could start letting a room in your house? Prioritise your debts Work out who you need to pay first. It’s best to pay all your creditors a small amount, rather than a lot to just one they will be more helpful if you show that you are trying to sort the problem out rather than not paying at all. Consolidate If you are paying sky-high credit card rates which eat up your repayments in interest, look for a bank loan or card with a better rate but only from a reputable source! DRIVING THROUGH THE YEARS A recent survey of motorists found that nearly half of them were unable to answer questions on the Highway Code. This handbook has been in existence for nearly eighty years and has undergone numerous changes over time. Driving rules were a lot easier in the past, but the casualty rates were higher than they are today. In the early days of motoring in Britain there was no driving test, so people often taught themselves to drive or received simple training from friends or colleagues and there were virtually no road regulations. By 1930 a few basic laws were introduced including a minimum driving age of 17. The first Highway Code book was published in 1931 and its eighteen pages contained detailed instructions for drivers of horse-drawn vehicles. They were advised to rotate the whip over their head then point it to the left or right depending on the direction they intended to turn. This first edition contained absolutely no information on using car mirrors, indicators didn’t exist and drivers were advised to beep their horn before overtaking to warn the car in front. However, there was a lengthy section explaining the various hand signals that drivers and policemen should use when directing traffic. It wasn’t until May 1975 that demonstrating arm signals was dropped from the driving test. Interestingly, speed limits were in force long before cars were invented. The 1865 Locomotive Act was designed for steam-driven traction engines and the speed limit was set at 4 mph on rural roads and 2 mph in urban areas. A man carrying a red flag was required to walk some way ahead to warn people that a ‘self powered vehicle’ was approaching. This flagman was also used for a few years in the early days of motor vehicles until the speed of the car became too fast for it to be practical. The first speeding ticket and a one shilling fine was issued in 1896 to a man driving at 8 mph in a 2 mph zone. The red flag rule ended in 1896 and was widely celebrated with motorists participating in the ‘emancipation run’ from London to Brighton; an event still repeated annually as the famous veteran

car rally. It wasn’t until 1935 that driving tests were made compulsory and the requirements of this first test were just these: eyesight test, questions on the Highway Code, “General Driving", emergency stop, arm signals, reverse left and turn in the road. There were no official testing centres and examiners met their candidates at a railway station or other designated spot. Testing was suspended for the duration of World War 2 and restarted in November 1946. During the Suez crisis of 1956 driving tests were also cancelled until April 1957 and have continued uninterrupted ever since. Now, not only has the driving test become more complicated, fewer people are passing. To ensure success, make sure you take the time to revise and thoroughly learn the Highway Code and take proper lessons with a qualified instructor. Happy motoring!

KIA SPORTAGE Meet the Sportage, a Kia that costs £20,777. We can hear that sucking of air through teeth from here and we agree: Yes, that does sound a bit rich. But before you dismiss it out of hand, you need to know the manufacturer has form here. Take Kia’s recently launched Sortento SUV as an example. The BMW X5sized model is selling out in the top-of-the-range K3 specification and that costs nearly £30,000. Suddenly the Sportage doesn’t look so over-priced… It helps that the new Sportage is a stunner though it’s the first model completely penned by former Audi designer Peter Schreyer, and it shows. What a job he’s done! From every angle the Sportage looks great the front is purposeful with LED daytime running lights catching your eye, the side profile slopes with sashes and cuts in the right places and those alloy wheels, with black inserts, really are gorgeous. The First Edition Sportage is available in just the one flavour: 2.0-litre CRDi with 4WD. That diesel unit is good for 134bhp and produces 320Nm of torque. It’s pretty clean too, emitting 156g/km and returning 47mpg

on the combined cycle. On the road our test car did feel a little wheezy as the revs rose, but the low down grunt was impressive. It hits 60mph in 10.9 seconds with the manual gearbox and will go on to 112mph. That six-speed box is pretty decent compared to rivals, the Peugeot 3008’s shift is like stirring a bowl of soup in comparison with the Kia set-up precise and pleasantly notchy. Steering is well weighted, but can feel a little devoid of feedback at motorway speeds. We’re not so keen on the pedals though they’re angled high and have a tendency to make your shin muscles ache. Inside the quality of materials has come on leaps and bounds from Kias of old. The seats although a little short on thigh support are comfortable on long distance journeys, the controls for the stereo and dual zone climate control are easy to operate and the dash layout is fresh and clean.

The First Edition comes with aux-in for your iPod, a USB slot for other MP3 players and there’s built-in Bluetooth for handsfree calling with voice command system. There’s even a reversing camera with screen built in to the rear-view mirror that works wonderfully. On the road, it feels like a big car the driving position is pretty lofty, but despite this there’s surprisingly little room inside. The driving position is cosy and that sloping roof makes it feel like there’s little headroom. It’s also a little on the loud side road roar from those big 18-inch alloys is quite high and we’re surprised it rides as hard as it does. You expect a 4x4 compact SUV like this to soak up the bumps more, but it’s actually quite jarring. Still the plus side is handling in the bends the Sportage doesn’t roll like rivals when pushed.

The Fish Stop is an award winning fish and chip shop situated in Baljaffray, Bearsden; run by husband and wife team John and Joyce. On July 4 the fish stop celebrated 5 years of trading. This year is also the 150 year birthday of the humble fish and chip. The Fish Stop launched its full Gluten and Wheat Free menu on Sunday, 6th June 2010. After this, the full menu is available every Sunday and Monday evening unlike other chip shops that have their full menu only on certain Saturdays of the month.
