WELCOME Autumn is always a great time of year, with a slight chill in the air and the nights drawing in, but it seems to have came round so quickly this year - probably due to the fact that so many special events happened this year in Scotland - it just seems like yesterday that we were in the middle of a great summer, but now we are beginning to see Christmas related items nudging their way through the shelves! With the temperature dipping, it’s the time of the year when we start to get our homes ready for the colder months - this is a great time to get your boiler checked before it is constantly on during the Winter - we have a variety of trusted plumbing and heating companies within the directory. You can find all of these in our index on page 62.
If you have any community news or information that you would like to share, please get in touch and remember to mention the Directory when using any of the local businesses who are advertising with us. Until the next issue.

'Strictly' Comes to Bearsden & Milngavie! It's time to put on your dancing shoes, even if you can't dance. Bearsden and Milngavie are going 'Strictly' mad! If you want to get fit fast, lose those unwanted pounds and have more fun than you can believe doing it, here's some great news for you. 'Strictly Come Dancing' dance stars Natalie Lowe and Ian Waite have teamed up with six time world champion swimmer Mark Foster, a former Strictly contestant and an expert in fitness and conditioning, to produce a unique dance and fitness programme – 'FitSteps'. Instructor Eilidh Lanzani (A local resident) has been personally trained by strictly stars Natalie Lowe and Ian Waite on how to deliver their unique fitsteps programme. They have combined, the best known and most popular Latin and Ballroom dances with proven fitness techniques, to develop a dance/fitness programme that is capable of delivering fast fitness results, with a heap of fun thrown in! The mix of graceful Ballroom steps and up tempo Latin dances creates a workout that tones and sculpts the whole body, burning up to a staggering 600 calories in one 45-minute session.
Eilidh tells us “It was fantastic to recognise the steps that I had been desperate to do since Strictly Come Dancing first came to television. What's also exciting about it is you're learning a skill as we teach the basic foundation of ballroom and Latin A m e r i c a n dancing.” And for anyone who's thinking, 'But I can't dance' or 'I don't have anyone to dance with', there's no excuse – you don't have to be able to dance and you don't need a partner! You just have to want to get fit and have fun. Eilidh is running classes every (Eilidh with Natalie & Ian) Saturday morning and Wednesday night. More information is on the advert below or simply call Eilidh for more information on: 07795 593 982.

MUSIC NEW RELEASES
Pink Floyd: The Endless River It’s their first new album in 20 years! Produced by Gilmour, Phil Manzanera, Martin "Youth" Glover, and Andy Jackson. The tracklist is divided into four sides to "invoke the album listening experience," according to a press release. It's mostly instrumental, with one song, "Louder Than Words", featuring lyrics by Polly Samson. The album is a tribute to Rick Wright “Whose keyboards are at the heart of the Pink Floyd sound.” reads a statement released by the band. The record will not feature original Pink Floyd bassist Roger Waters, who left the band in 1985. Speaking last year, drummer Nick Mason revealed that he would be interested in a full band reunion, but was not certain it will ever materialise.
Foo Fighters: Sonic Highways They have sold more than 25 million albums since 1995, including three UK Number 1’s. Their new album which was recorded in eight different cities with a different ‘local legend’ featured on each song, Sonic Highways, is the follow up to Wasting Light from 2011. Needless to say, the fans have been craving more ever since, and now they’re getting a mouthful. This album is instantly recognisable as Foo Fighters, but there's something deeper and more musical to it," Grohl said in a statement. "I think that these cities and these people influenced us to stretch out and explore new territory, without losing our ‘sound'." Despite sharing a name with Grohl's upcoming documentary, the album is not a soundtrack of that HBO series. We can’t wait to get our hands on it!
Prince: Art Official Age During the '80s, he emerged as one of the most singular talents of the rock & roll era, capable of seamlessly tying together pop, funk, folk, and rock. Not only did he release a series of groundbreaking albums; he toured frequently, produced albums and wrote songs for many other artists, and recorded hundreds of songs. It's now been five years since Prince put out a new record, but now however - In true Prince fashion, he has just given us not one, but two extraordinary albums that express the incredible range and depth of his talent. Art Official Age is being billed as "classic Prince", since it was produced, arranged, composed and performed by the musician (alongside singersongwriter Joshua Welton). The album reportedly contains a mix of soul, R&B and funk and well worth the wait.

TRAVEL TWO MUST VISIT PLACES IN AMERICA
.
Orlando, Florida This is a fantastic, fun city with many places to check out and things to do. Orlando is known as the largest family entertainment center on the planet. Probably most widely known is Walt Disney World featuring the Magic Kingdom where you can shake hands with Mickey, dine in Cinderella's Castle or perhaps get married with Mickey Mouse and Minnie Mouse as your attendants. The whole park is wonderful and you will surely have fun with the clowns at Cirque du Soleil's La Nouba. Safari is also an excellent adventure when you visit Animal Kingdom. Take in the Epcot Center and tour the world in "Under a Mile". Design and experience your own ride, hang glide above California's redwood forests, ride in a "clamobile" with Nemo and his awesome friends, or launch into space!! Go to Universal Studios and fight against aliens, see a "volcano' erupt, view your favorite movies come to life, and so much more. Of course, a holiday to Orlando, without going to Seaworld, is nearly impossible. You can ride the
breathtaking Mantra rollercoaster or feel a sense of weightlessness on the Omaka Rocka. Discover the lost city of Atlantis, touch a stingray, and maybe see a dolphin mother and her calves. It really is great fun to eat in the Sharks Underwater Grill and view the mighty predators. There are a selection of side trips to take. For instance visit the Kennedy Space Center and perhaps dine with an astronaut, train like an astronaut, or maybe see a rocket launch. Nearby you can also go whale watching. Back in Orlando, shop your heart out at The Mall at Millenia or for golfers, there are more than 176 golf courses! You can, also watch the NBA Orlando Magic play basketball. Then take a breath, get back to the Magic Kingdom and watch the nightly fireworks. While enjoying your trip to Orlando, it is so nice to stay in one of many Kissimmee Villas, of which there are several. Many are close to Walt Disney World and/or within short driving distances of bars, shops, restaurants, and golf courses. Some include pools, tennis courts and children's play areas and more.

Printing and Leaflet Distribution Grand Canyon National Park The Grand Canyon National Park in Arizona, features, craggy cliffs, and smaller canyons, it is essentially the most breathtaking natural wonders on the planet. The Grand Canyon National Park is considered the jewel of America's National Parks. Visiting early in the year when cooler and desert flowers are blooming is the best time for you to visit. Summertime can be unbearably hot. Paved, accessible trails give you a way to walk between Grand Canyon Village as well as the South Kaibab Trailhead, two completely different areas of the Grand Canyon.. They are far enough apart, that it really is difficult to visit both on a single trip, but that provides a person a reason to check out again. Not that a reason to check out this glorious site is needed! More people check out the South rim, as it is easily accessible, has the most panoramic views, and offers more services. But the North Rim is charming as the cooler temperatures help the growth of the lovely wildflowers and also the trees are thick. The Canyon has a glass, horse-shoe shaped skywalk with a great view where visitors will likely have the feeling of vertigo. The Grand Canyon is just too very wonderful to miss when travelling in America.

MOTORING BEST 4X4S With rugged looks, commanding view of the road and the ability to get you out of some sticky situations, a 4x4 makes sense for lots of drivers. From mummies collecting at the school gates to business owners who need a reliable working vehicle, there’s plenty of choice in the off-road category. What’ more the latest crop of pumped-up SUVs also offer clever technology, luxurious interior sand don’t have to cost the earth. Here we take a look at five of our favourites for you to put a new reg plate on.
Nissan Qashqai Price: From £17,595 The Nissan Qashqai has recently been revampedgiving it fresh looks to keep it firmly placed in the top 10 best-selling cars in the UK chart. It’s a compact SUV that’s easy to live with every day, affordable and extremely comfortable. The new exterior design tweaks look superb, it’s wonderfully refined and the interior is packed with helpful new technology. With plenty of engine choice it’s hard to beat. Dacia Duster Price: From £9,495 The budget brand offers no-nonsense, affordable and practical cars - and the Duster is our pick of the range. With chunky off-road styling, genuine 4x4 capability and prices that wouldn’t look out of place in a cash and carry it’s certainly worth a look. Think more functional than luxury, with the base spec coming without a radio and air-con. We’d say for the top-of-the-range model that’ll still be less than most hatchbacks.
BMW X3 Price: From £30,990 The BMW X3 is the little brother to the Range Roverrivaling X5, but don’t let that you put you off. It’s got the cache of that blue and white propeller badge on the bonnet, is beautifully trimmed and is built for comfort. Some say the styling isn’t as sharp as it needs to be, but with plenty of spec and low running costs it’s well worth a look.

Jeep Grand Cherokee Price: From £37,705 With fresh new looks straight out of Stateside, the Jeep brings a slice of American Pie to a sometimes-bland car category. Beefy looks match its proportions and it’s certainly recognisable on the roads with an imposing stance. Packed with technology, a sumptuous interior and a surprisingly economic 2.0-litre engine choice, the Grand Cherokee is a leftfield choice that shouldn’t be ignored.
Mitsubishi Outlander Price: From £23,984 With an innovative plug-in hybrid variant that can do 30 miles on pure electric, combined with a combustion engine for longer journeys, the Outlander is carving a niche in the SUV market. Ok, so the looks won’t set the world on fire, but it’s well-made, extremely capable off road and is comfortable to drive. With very competitive pricing thrown into the mix, you really should try an Outlander.

CINEMA GONE GIRL
Gone Girl is David Fincher’s adaptation of Gillian Flynn’s best seller, it is a gripping, twisty-turny psychological thriller starring Ben Affleck as Nick Dunne and Rosamund Pike as Amy Elliot Dunne. On the day of their 5th wedding anniversary, Nick's wife, Amy disappears out of nowhere. Nick comes home from work to find a crime scene inside his home. Signs of a struggle, and blood wiped from the kitchen floor, suggest she was abducted, possibly murdered. Amy is nowhere to be found. What happened? Surely not the good-natured and cooperative husband, so eager to please the detectives and the helpful locals couldn't have had anything to do with it? Or, maybe he's just playing the role of the good-natured and cooperative husband. It’s not long before Nick becomes number one suspect as the lead investigators have uncovered the cracks in this loving marriage: The duress started when it uncovers that Amy and Nick were heard arguing the
night before and then word of his affair gets around. Also the evidence is all right there in colored ink, in Amy's journal. She wrote in it for years, sharing her uncensored thoughts about the couple's sexy courtship and their most bitter arguments. She never once told her husband about it, but she narrates the details for us via flashbacks. Amy’s diary left a record of a devoted wife’s growing suspicions and gnawing fear of her swine of a spouse, as well as the first clue in a brandnew treasure hunt. Nick now must juggle three uncomfortable roles: villain, victim and sleuth. The movie weaves in an inspired maze of twists, only for them to all lead to a complex meditation on marriage with a muddled ending, however David Fincher and Gillian Flynn's intelligent storytelling throughout this fantastic journey will keep you at the edge of your seat from start to finish. The soundtrack and score is also very intense and haunting, and has huge impact on the film.

INTERIORS GIVE YOUR WALLS A FACELIFT Not a fan of wallpaper but bored with paint? Use your imagination and ingenuity to create all sorts of interesting decorative effects on your walls, says interiors expert Katherine Sorrell Terrific tiles Hard-wearing, long-lasting, easy to clean and potentially highly decorative, tiles are often overlooked as a wallcovering other than for the inevitable bathroom or kitchen splashback. Yet they are available in as great a variety of colours and patterns as wallpaper, and can have just as much impact. They can be super-shiny or matt and understated; sleek and machine-made or wobbly, rustic and hand-made; even and smooth, or knobbly and textured; even digitally printed with your own designs. Something to suit every style. Why not consider tiled walls for hallways, conservatories, laundry rooms and utility rooms? Given their fabulous decorative potential, they may also work as part of a living area, too. Just how a tiled area looks - whether it’s a whole wall or a small splashback - depends on a variety of factors. Their colour, pattern and texture are most important, of course, but size (from huge slabs to tiny mosaic) matters, too, while shape also plays a part. While most tiles are square or rectangular, other shapes are available, and can create complex patterns that have enormous impact. Your chosen layout also makes a difference, whether it’s a simple grid, an offset design
(also known as brick bond), herringbone, pinwheel or random. Will you add borders or mix two or more patterns? How wide apart will your tiles be spaced? And what colour grout will you choose? Tiling may not be as simple as it first seems but it can certainly be rewarding. Timber panelling Wood panelling keeps heat in and noises out, and is great for disguising wonky walls and. More than that, though, it has fabulous warmth and character. Choose fielded panelling for classic feel, or simple tongue and groove for that cosy, country look. Leave natural or paint to co-ordinate with the rest of the room - it’s up to you. Mirror A wall (or a portion of it) covered with a sheet of mirror will reflect light around and instantly make the room seem bigger. The larger the mirror, the thicker it needs to be, so it’s often a good idea to get professional help to attach it securely. Polished plaster A centuries-old Italian technique, also known as Venetian plaster, involves applying several thin coats of plaster and polishing with wax. The finished result boasts a lovely depth of colour and can resemble marble, stone or suede.
Different types of tiles Ceramic: relatively inexpensive, don’t need sealing or polishing and are easily wiped clean. Porcelain: heavier and harder-wearing than ceramic, and can often be used outdoors as well as inside. Surface effects include natural stone, metals, concrete, fabric, wood and leather. Glass: clear, frosted and coloured, and have a lovely, translucent appearance. Mosaics: small ceramic, glass, stone, metal or even shell tiles, usually supplied on a backing sheet and employed for small areas of decorative effect. Natural stone: includes limestone, marble, granite and slate. Can be porous, so check whether they need to be sealed before use. Fabric Choose your fabric, line it, stretch it, and staple it to battens fixed to the walls. There’s no way around it: this traditional technique is expensive. It looks amazing, however, and is helpful in insulating against cold and noise. Composites and laminates They may seem dull, but in fact sheets of plastic laminate or solid composite have decorative potential. As they are waterproof and require few joins, they make an especially good choice for bathrooms.
Cork Cork sheets and tiles offer many appealing qualities, from being warm and soft to the touch to having insulating and soundproofing benefits. What’s more, they are highly environmentallyfriendly. A range of modern colours, patterns and textures is available. Sheet metal Fancy an unusual wall installation? Then opt for sheets of metal, steel, copper or aluminium. Finishes include different textures, laser-cut designs or even designer rust and, depending on their patina and arrangement, the end result could be either overtly industrial or sleek and upmarket.
Leather Costly but eye-catching and incredibly luxurious, leather-clad walls possess enormous character, while their patina, like that of a quality shoe, will develop over time. Apparently, they are even sound and fire-retardant.

BEAUTY PROBLEM SOLVING SKIN CARE Flawless, radiant, glowing skin is the key to looking naturally beautiful, so forget covering-up with foundation and instead, start treating your lingering skin issues with the help of our problem-solving guide. Adult Acne You might think that acne ends when your teenage years are over, but many women - and men - suffer well into their adult life. Fortunately there’s plenty that can be done to clear up those pesky pimples. Treat it Yourself Thoroughly cleanse your skin twice a day - using an oil free cleanser - to ensure that you remove every trace of make-up and oil. Treat individual spots with concentrated tea-tree oil, just make sure that you apply it neatly on the area you are treating to avoid irritating surrounding skin. Targeted products that reduce excess oils should be part of your routine. Proactiv do a really good range for acne-prone skin. When you are covering spots, use a medicated concealer so that you not only get the camouflage you want but a convenient treatment too. A more unusual, non-topical treatment for acne that many swear by, is to change your pillow and the case to ones made of bamboo fibres rather than cotton. It’s said that cotton and polycotton absorb acne-causing bacteria and bamboo fibres don’t. Even if you don’t use a bamboo pillowcase, you should wash your cotton pillowcase every couple of days. Visit the Salon There are so many salon treatments available for acne sufferers, as well as treatments that help to reduce the
appearance of the scarring associated with the condition. You’ll also get a professional opinion and a customised plan to improve your skin. Facials are a great once or twice a week treatment that will decongest your skin. Omnilux Blue is a popular salon treatment that uses a spectrally blue light source to clear and control acne and kill spot-causing bacteria on the skin. Microdermabrasion is useful for removing acne scarring. Open Pores Enlarged pores can look unsightly, so treat the problem before they ruin your complexion. Treat it Yourself Regular deep cleansing masks will help you to draw out impurities and eliminate excess oil. Use products that are designed to minimise the look of your pores - Benefit’s POREfessional and Clinique’s Pore Refining Solutions range are great. Visit the Salon Micro-dermabrasion and a series of glycolic peels work to dissolve the top layers of the skin, thus shrinking pores and ridding the skin of trapped dirt. continued on page38

Milia Those annoying hard, white blemishes - that look like little beads under the skin - can be hard to get rid of, so prevention is definitely better than cure. Treat it Yourself Regular and thorough exfoliation is key to stopping milia from forming in the first place, but if you’ve got them and you want to treat them at home, then invest in a facial sauna. Using a facial sauna for 10-15 minutes every day helps to unclog pores and loosen dirt, debris and dead skin cells on the skin. You can then use a self-heating, exfoliating mini-peel treatment to help break down the milia even more. Visit the Salon Chemical peels work really well to treat this problem, especially the Priori Advanced AHA peel.
Treat it at Home Protect your skin as much as possible, especially if you spend a lot of time outdoors - always use a high-factor sun-protection cream. Neutralise redness and disguise the problem using a green tinted primer under your foundation. Visit the Salon Intense Pulsed Light and Laser Intense Pulsed Light systems are useful in eliminating broken veins and reducing redness. By the use of brief pulses of laser light to destroy smaller blood vessels, the veins will seal. As this means they no longer have blood flowing through them, they won’t look red.
Red Cheeks Redness in your cheeks - caused by spider veins or broken capillaries - can make you feel very selfconscious when going make-up free. Caused by factors like hormonal changes in the body, exposure to harsh weather conditions and UV rays, as well as alcohol consumption, means toning-down the redness can be hard work.

Extending your way to a greater sale value
As the housing market continues its recovery, the National Association of Estate Agents (NAEA) reveals the home extensions most likely to add property ahead of sale. Research conducted as part of NAEA’s latest monthly housing market report revealed that almost half (49%) of estate agents say adding an extra bedroom usually by converting loft space is the best way of adding value to a property. While an additional bedroom fundamentally changes the description of a property, other less drastic changes can also have significant, positive effects of value according to agents.
Research shows that bedrooms and kitchens are seen as the most sensible areas for expansion, and this certainly rings true when a property comes on to the market. The number of bedrooms is usually the first criteria house hunters select, therefor if it’s possible to add an additional bedroom, there can be an immediate effect on price. Remember that securing the necessary consents is an absolute must before any work starts, and any unapproved work can have a significant impact on resale value. To get the best advice on extending, always seek professional advice from your local architectural practice.
Over a third (34%) said that enlarging a kitchen was the best way to boost the price of a property. Beyond these two key changes, opinion was somewhat divided across the country. 4% said that adding a conservatory would add the most value, 3% recommended converting an existing garage into living space. Extensions have the dual benefit of increasing available space within a property, and crucially has the potential to significantly increase value when the time comes to sell. GARDENING PLANTING TREES AND SHRUBS This is a great time of year to get planting - the soil is still holding a bit of warmth from the late summer and is now more moist and provides good conditions for roots to develop, spread and establish. Trees, shrubs and woody climbers in particular are often a very good buy at this time of year so take a look at your garden and see what you could add, or perhaps consider removing that plant which has never quite done what y ou hoped….and replace it with something new. Planting trees and shrubs is certainly not difficult, but it is one of those gardening tasks about which ideas seem to change regularly and it can be confusing if you read widely differing opinions and ideas. So what should you be doing if you have just decided to add a few trees to your garden? A good planting hole or pit is essential, and you should make sure that it is several inches (or better still more) larger than the current spread of the roots of the tree or shrub that you are about to plant. For years the advice has been that plenty of bulky organic matter should be incorporated in to the hole and the mixture with which you back fill it. Investigations now suggest that this may not necessarily be the best way of going about things: make the planting hole too ‘cosy’ and the tree’s roots may be inclined to stay in the hole and not venture out in to the surrounding soil. In a heavy clay soil a planting hole full of compost may also end up acting as a sump, so when the soil is wet the compost draws more moisture in to the hole, resulting in waterlogged roots and maybe even death. All very logical, but then I would also suggest that if you garden on a very sandy, poor soil, a well-prepared
planting pit (the bigger the better) which includes bulky organic matter such as garden compost will help to reduce the risk of drying out, and increase the chances of the tree growing away well. Similarly, provided the organic matter is incorporated over a good enough sized area on a heavy soil, I think it does help to improve aeration and drainage around tree roots, especially if you incorporate some grit too. Well rotted manure (ideally from a known source), garden compost and proprietary bagged compost are all useful in planting holes and if it is largely an improvement in soil texture which you are after, then home-made leafmould is great too, and you can even use the compost from this summer’s patio tubs and planters (provided you are sure that it is free from vine weevil grubs). Next, to tease or not to tease the roots? I’m a teaser every time, having seen thousands of trees fail because their pot-bound roots never moved out in to the soil properly, if at all. Planting depth is important too, so do make sure that you cover the roots, and only the roots, with soil. Even the compost level in the pot is often too deep, so start from scratch if necessary. Laying a straight cane over the top of the planting hole will help you to gauge the correct depth more easily.

When I worked for the Royal Horticultural Society at Wisley my job as Plant Pathologist entailed looking at thousands of dead and dying plants each year - it was scary to see just how many trees and shrubs failed to thrive or just died because they had not been correctly planted. There is no doubt that excessively deep planting and entangled and pot-bound roots were the main cause of all that plant suffering, so do take the time to get it right. Then of course there is staking. I suggest only doing this with large trees, apples on very dwarfing rootstocks or if the site is extremely windy as a tree will get tougher and more resilient if given a chance to move around slightly and so form a strong trunk. If you do stake, short stakes at an angle are now regarded as best, and do use a good quality tree tie, properly fitted so that the tree’s bark is not chaffed. Finally, remember that aftercare is essential, regular thorough waterings will be needed during dry weather, especially for the first couple of years after planting. If
you don’t get the aftercare right, both the plant and all that time and effort (and enthusiasm) can easily be lost. HEALTH WHAT IS DIABETES AND CAN YOU AVOID IT? 14th November is World D i a b e t e s D a y, w h e n organisations around the world work to raise diabetes awareness. But recent scare stories in the media mean most of us in the UK are aware of diabetes; we’re just not always clear on the details or what we can do to avoid developing it. It’s all about the Insulin Insulin is a hormone produced in the pancreas to regulate our blood sugar levels, ensuring the glucose we ingest enters our body’s cells where we can use it. Diabetes occurs when the pancreas fails to produce enough insulin or fails to produce it at all - allowing unused glucose to build up. There are two main types of diabetes: Type 1 and Type 2. Type 1 Diabetes Around 1 in 300 people in the UK suffer from Type 1 diabetes, caused by the pancreas failing to produce insulin. It often develops in a matter of days or weeks and usually appears in children and young adults, which is why it’s often called ‘early onset’ or ‘juvenile’ diabetes. It’s also called ‘insulin-dependent’ diabetes, as the treatment is regular insulin injections which you normally administer yourself. A healthy lifestyle is important in controlling Type 1 diabetes too. Causes: usually autoimmune malfunction - antibodies attack insulin-producing cells. Sometimes inflammation or surgical removal of the pancreas Symptoms: Fatigue, weight loss, increased urination and thirst. Am I at risk? Type 1 diabetes isn’t hereditary, but there is a genetic link - your risk rises to 6 in 100 if a parent or sibling has Type 1. Unfortunately, at present the triggers of Type 1 aren’t fully understood and it can’t be prevented.
Type 2 Diabetes Type 2 is far more common, and on the rise in the UK, where around 5% of over-65s are diabetic. It usually develops in people over 40, and you won’t normally need insulin - which is why it’s also known as ‘late onset’, ‘maturity onset’ or ‘noninsulin dependent’ diabetes. Often it can be controlled by maintaining a healthy lifestyle, but some people may need medication to help stabilise their blood sugar levels. Type 2 diabetes occurs when either your pancreas doesn’t produce enough insulin, or when your cells become resistant to insulin and can’t use it properly. Sometimes it’s caused by a combination of these factors. It tends to develops over time, unlike Type 1, and symptoms may be mild to begin with and gradually worsen. Causes: It’s unclear what specifically causes Type 2 diabetes, but a number of factors can contribute towards developing it: ethnicity (it’s more prevalent in people of South Asian, Black African and African Caribbean, and they may develop it earlier), age, excess weight (particularly around the waist) and genetic elements (again, risk increases if a parent of sibling suffers from Type 2). Symptoms: Fatigue, weight loss, increased urination and thirst. Am I at risk? To assess if you’re at risk, you can use Diabetes UK’s handy questionnaire at http://riskscore.diabetes.org.uk/type2risk/ Gestational Diabetes Around 5% of pregnant women develop gestational diabetes, which is due to increased blood glucose levels - too high for insulin to cope with efficiently. It can usually be controlled through diet and exercise and disappears after birth, but it does increase the risk of developing Type 2 diabetes.

Pre-Diabetes Pre-diabetes is a warning sign. You’re suffering from impaired glucose tolerance (when your normally healthy-range sugar levels rise after eating) and often impaired fasting glycaemia too. While your blood sugar levels aren’t quite high enough for a Type 2 diagnosis, they’re above normal and you’re at significant risk of developing it. Reducing your Type 2 diabetes risk Diabetes UK estimates that around 80% of Type 2 diabetes cases could be prevented or at least delayed with a healthy lifestyle, so to reduce your risk: Snack right: Think fresh and fruity! Choose fruit, raw vegetables, nuts and low fat, low sugar dairy products - and stay away from salty, fatty snacks and sugary treats. Eat right: Make sure you include fruit, vegetables, carbohydrates and protein in your diet every day. Choose raw fruit and vegetables, wholegrain carbohydrates and lean protein such as fish and pulses whenever you can. Try to eat small, regular meals to stabilise your blood sugar and make sure your portion size is appropriate for your age, size and gender.
Drink right: Stay hydrated and keep within the recommended daily and weekly alcohol limits: for women this is 2-3 units per day, 14 per week and for men, 3-4 units per day, 21 units per week. Exercise right: Find an exercise you enjoy and try to fit in at least 2 hours of exercise per week. This doesn’t need to be in one chunk, or even two - fit in s h o r t e r sessions (a walk or short routine from an exercise DVD, for instance) where you can. Some diabetics go on to develop complications that affect their eyes, kidneys, heart, nerves or feet, so it’s worth doing all you can to reduce your diabetes risk. By Alison Runham

Monkey Music and Your Baby Monkey Music’s award winning pre-school music classes introduce babies and young children to music in a way they can easily understand and enjoy – and it’s brilliant fun for both children and adults! The specialist teachers who are carefully chosen for their natural ability to communicate with and entertain young children, gently encourage social and musical skills within a fun, stimulating and friendly environment. Classes are carefully structured to encourage progressive learning and freedom of expression, and children are grouped in small classes according to their age. There are many benefits of introducing music to very young children, particularly when teaching within a group. Early exposure to singing, listening to and
playing music can really help develop a whole range of educational skills. Language and numerical skills flourish through action songs and rhymes; fine motor skills are refined through playing hand held percussion instruments, while an awareness of space and one another is developed through movement. It’s amazing to watch each child’s confidence and self-esteem grow, as their involvement in the group increases!
This term, due to popular demand, new classes are starting on Wednesday afternoons in Woodhill Evangelical Church, Bishopbriggs and on Thursday mornings in Lenzie Union Church. The best way to drain a wet garden. Do you have a garden or outside space that you can never use as a result of poor drainage or lack of drainage? Is the ground constantly wet and soggy underfoot, with high levels of water retention after rain? Then AQUATERRA EUROPE has a solution that will give you back your outdoor space. PASSIVE CAPILLARY DRAINAGE (PCD) was designed and developed in the USA originally for the sports turf market and as part of our ongoing development has now been adapted by AQUATERRA for the residential market in the UK. PCD can be installed without the entire affected area being excavated and upon completion the garden is ready for use straight away. A typical installation can be completed in 3-4 days, including drainage connections and turfing where appropriate. Call AQUATERRA today for more information.

TECH GUIDE THE BEST CHRISTMAS GADGETS FOR HIM Buying gadgets can be tricky: if you’re buying for a grown-up there’s a very good chance that they’ve already bought the gadgets they want. But don’t despair, because it turns out that there are lots of gadget-related gifts you can buy for the man who has everything. A good place to start is with a case. You can spend hundreds if you want something from a name designer, but firms such as Tuff-Luv make really nice vintage leather Kindle cases for around £40. And of course you can get leather cases for other devices such as laptops and tablets too. If he hasn’t already got a tablet, there are plenty of alternatives to the all-conquering iPad and iPad Mini. Amazon’s Kindle Fire HD (£89) is good for ebooks and movies, and a range of affordable Windows 8 tablets have been launched by the likes of Asus, Acer and Toshiba, all below £200.
If he fancies himself as the next Jamie Oliver, Belkin’s Chef Stand and Wand (£29) is a smart gift idea. It’s a tablet stand designed specifically for the kitchen, enabling him to see the recipe (or the tutorial videos if
he’s using cooking apps or YouTube) without getting it covered in food. If he’s more of an outdoor cooking type, iGrill’s range of smartphone-connected thermometers (from around £34.99) give him a new toy to play with while he’s burning burgers. One of the more unusual new gadgets we’ve seen is the PlayBulb, a bluetooth speaker that’s also an LED light bulb. The £59 device is controlled via an iPhone and Android app that enables you play music and, er, turn the light on and off. For sporty types there are stacks of gadget gifts, such as the Fitbit Flex activity tracker (£75), the Zepp motion sensor for tennis players (£129), Garmin’s Forerunner GPS watches (£89) and the TomTom Multi-Sport GPS Watch (£149). If you really want to delight a gadget fan, this year’s hot technology is the smartwatch - of which LG’s G Watch R is one of the nicest. The price hadn’t been announced as we went to press but the Androidcompatible smartwatch is likely to be keenly priced not least because Apple has its own smartwatch, which is likely to be a big seller this Christmas.

If he’s already shelled out for a smart watch, how about a drone? Parrot’s AR.Drone 2.0 (£224) is a smartphone-controlled quadricopter, a flying drone that can stream high definition video back to the owner’s phone or tablet. There are drones to suit all budgets, from the £36 Quadricopter X4 to drones costing more than £600. Many bigger drones are designed to carry GoPro cameras, which are small high definition cameras that strapped to bike helmets, to remote controlled cars and even to musical instruments. Expect to pay from around £199. You don’t have to spend lots of money for a great gadget gift, though. The excellent Aeropress coffee maker produces brews that rival the world’s most expensive coffee machines, and you can pick one up brand new - for around £25. can be attached to almost anything. Our current favourite video, a YouTube hit, was made by strapping a GoPro to a dog’s collar and then letting it sprint down to the beach for a swim, but we’ve seen GoPros

RECIPE CULLEN SKINK Cullen Skink is one of our most popular dishes at The Fintry Inn. This soup is a traditional Scottish soup from the town of Cullen. The word 'Skink' is a Scots word for a shin, knuckle or hough of beef - which has developed the secondary meaning of a soup. It is good and hearty - perfect now the nights are drawing in. Serves 6 Ingredients: 500g smoked haddock, skin on A bay leaf Small bunch of Thyme Knob of butter 1 onion, peeled and finely chopped 1 leek, washed and sliced 2 medium floury potatoes, peeled, cut into cubes 400ml Fish stock 400ml Double cream Pinch Saffron Âź tsp of Smoked Paprika Pinch Maldons Smoked Salt and milled black pepper. Flat leaf Parsley, chopped, to garnish 6 Free range eggs
Cook until the potato is tender. 4. Add the double cream, bring to the boil and cook for a further 5 min. 5. Meanwhile, remove the skin, and any bones from the haddock, and break into flakes. 6. Season to taste. Share the haddock between bowls, spoon over hot soup, sprinkle chopped parsley and a good twist of black pepper and pinch of smoked Maldons salt. Serve with crusty bread & butter and if you are feeling extravagant add a poached egg and a handful of smoked mussels.
Method: 1. Put the fish into a pan large enough to hold it comfortably, and cover with about 400ml cold water. Add the bay leaf, thyme and bring gently to the boil. By the time it comes to the boil, the fish should be just cooked. Remove from the pan, be careful not to remove liquor along with it and set aside to cool. 2. Melt the butter in another pan on a medium-low heat, and add the onion and the leek. Cover and allow to sweat, without colouring, for about 10 minutes until softened. Add spices and potatoes. 3. When potatoes are coated and have a shine pour in the strained haddock cooking liquor, and bring to a simmer.

BOOKS WAR AND PEACE
In November we remember Armistice Day and it’s always a moving and contemplative time of the year. It’s particularly poignant now we’ve reached 2014, as we mark the 100th anniversary of the outbreak of World War 1 and remember those who gave their lives fighting in the trenches, and for the lost generation who never returned. Whether they’re based on fact or purely fiction, the stories and novels of WW1 still resonate today. Here are some of the most unforgettable. Line of Fire: Diary of an Unknown Soldier Barroux (Author), Sarah Ardizzone (Translator) This remarkable and unusual book came from the chance discovery of a diary. French writer and illustrator Barroux found the journal of an unknown soldier in a rubbish heap on a Parisian street. Barroux’s simple and often stark pencil illustrations have brought the words of the soldier to life and given us a rare glimpse into the first two months of WW1. The diary begins just as France officially declares war, and the soldier’s often heartrending descriptions cover a broad spectrum of emotions: from the physical ache and rub of boots in the here and now, to the hope and longing for his family and for a safe passage through the conflict. What became of the soldier we will perhaps never know, but here we have a rare glimpse into a moment and a life, in time. The Guns of August - Barbara W. Tuchman The thirty days leading up to the start of World War One have been brought to life in Tuchman’s Pulitzer Prizewinning novel. It focuses on why the war broke out, who was involved and why it wasn’t prevented. Her attention to detail is incredible and as those last few weeks spill out in front of us, you can almost feel as though you are reliving it, one hundred years on. It makes for incredibly powerful and thought-provoking reading.
War Horse - Michael Morpurgo From the pen of acclaimed children’s author, Michael Morpurgo, comes a story that has captivated kids and adults alike. Joey is a beautiful young foal who is sold to the army and quickly finds himself charging into battle as the war rages in France. Told through Joey’s eyes, this is a powerful story about friendship, humility and humanity. Joey battles to stay alive and never lets go of his dream of returning home to his original owner, Albert and the farm life he left behind. This powerful story has become both an emotive stage show in the West End and a Hollywood blockbuster.
A Farewell to Arms - Ernest Hemingway Based on his own experiences of the First World War, volunteering for the ambulance service in Italy, A Farewell to Arms is a love story between Frederic Henry (a Lieutenant serving in the ambulance corps of the Italian Army) and a nurse called Catherine Barkley. Set against a brutal and bloody backdrop, the novel is full of moments of sheer romanticism and passion. Hemingway’s descriptions of war are truly unforgettable and the themes of love and death make for a very dramatic read.
