MUSIC NEW RELEASES KT Tunstall: Invisible Empire / Crescent Moon. Eight years ago KT Tunstall’s unique blend of pop, blues and folk made it to the top of the charts in the form of ‘Black Horse and the Cherry Tree’ which was arguably one of the greatest songs of 2005. ‘Suddenly I See,’ also taken from her debut album release ‘Eye To The Telescope’ brought the Scottish lass similar mainstream success. Now, well established with two further critically acclaimed albums under her belt, KT is back with ‘Invisible Empire / Crescent Moon.’ Both the album’s title and cover art emphasise KT’s country sound, which has clearly been well developed during two recording sessions in Arizona. Anyone hoping for the catchier side to KT may not get into this new record - It's very much the gentle side of her and anyone who appreciates KT trying new ideas for new albums, will probably be very impressed by this, even if it takes several listens. It is clearly written and sung with passion, each track comes with proof of someone clearly in love with their art.
Editors: The Weight Of Your Love Four years is a long time. In that time, Editors have lost their guitarist, and expanded their lineup. “The Weight Of Your Love” is Editors at their best. Whilst there is a left turn away from the potent mixture that made their last album “In This Light” a compelling tale of electronics and electrics, this is a different and compelling record, the sound of a new identity but already known. The Editors have shown a lot of progression since their earlier work It is interesting how ‘The Weight Of Your Love’ seems to be a return back to Editor’s roots in music, whilst also featuring many of their new styles they’ve learnt over the years. In fairness to Editors, they’ve worked it well, creating an album that seemingly spans a few genres, but manages to combine them all with a great flow. There’s a lot to enjoy on ‘The Weight Of Your Love’, which should please fans of Editors, both of their old style, and their somewhat newer style.
Daft Punk - Random Access Memories The most talked about and most highly anticipated album of 2013 is Daft Punk's ‘Random Access Memories', the groups 4th studio album and first in 8 years. In their 20-year history Daft Punk have redefined electronic music, pioneered the live dance concert experience and shaped pop culture. Random Access Memories is their most ambitious and epic release to date. There are undeniable moments of genius in this album and they are now looking very much like one of the biggest bands in the world. Daft Punk have said that the album is an attempt to revive the "magic" of the event albums that soundtracked their childhoods. HEALTH KEEPING GUM DISEASE AWAY
How often have you seen blood in the basin when brushing your teeth and done nothing about it? Unfortunately, this is just one of the signs of gum disease, which has been linked to heart and lung disease, diabetes, strokes and premature births. Gum disease, also known as gingivitis, is where the gums become swollen, sore or infected. It can cause bad breath, bleeding gums, abscesses, loose teeth, receding gums and cavities. With around half of the population having some degree of gum disease, the risk of further health complications makes for scary reading. But the good news is that there is plenty you can do to improve things. Bad bacteria The disease is caused by a build-up of plaque on the teeth, which contain hundreds of bacteria that can be harmful to your gums. If you don’t brush your teeth properly or have them regularly cleaned by a professional, this plaque can build up and irritate your gums. Surprisingly, even if you aren’t experiencing any
pain you might still be suffering from gum disease. In severe cases, a condition called periodontitis can develop - this affects the tissues that support your teeth and hold them in place, meaning that you may even lose teeth. There are cases where you may be more likely to get gum disease and not just because you aren’t brushing your teeth well. For example, if you: • Are over the age of 35 • Are a smoker • Have a condition that makes it harder for your body to fight infection • Have a high level of stress • Are taking certain forms of medication linked with gum disease, including tricyclic antidepressants, antihistamines, antimuscarinic drugs, some antiepileptic drugs, some antipsychotics, betablockers, diuretics (water tablets) • Have a poor diet • Are pregnant

Dental check-ups With many of us neglecting our visits to the dentist and a recent survey revealing that men are the worst culprits when it comes to regular dental check ups, you may be completely unaware of the existence of a problem other than perhaps seeing blood in the sink when brushing your teeth. Don’t wait for your gums to become painful, inflamed or bleed before you visit your dentist mild cases can be easily treated or even reversed. However, in cases of severe gum disease, you may need further treatment carried out by a specialist. There’s no shame in asking your hygienist to show you how to clean your teeth properly or the best way to floss - years of bad habits can be hard to change, but even changing your toothbrush every three months can help.

TRAVEL CORFU
Corfu is the greenest of the Greek islands, festooned with vines and olive groves and tall cypress trees pointing straight up to the sky. Gentle shores in the east, mostly shingle, sheer cliffs but gorgeous sands in the west, lowlands in the south, mountains in the north, the scenery changes with every bend of the road. Framed by wooded hills on the west coast, Paleokastritsa is one of the most idyllic spots, all crystal clear waters and crescent-shaped bays meandering around cliffs and rocks. Pink villas peep through the trees like giant candyfloss, boats sail around the coast and into gaping caves, most exciting the ‘blue eye’ where shoals of fish swim in a luminous patch of blue water. Up on the headland, crowds head for the pocket-sized monastery, keen to set eyes on precious icons, light candles and enjoy panoramic views over land and sea.
In the distance, meadows spread across the slopes, sprinkled with pink orchids and wild gladioli and isolated farms tucked in lemon groves. There are secluded coves, sweeping sands and quiet trails where rosemary and oregano leave their scent in the air. Meanwhile on the east coast, Kerkyra, the capital, stretches across a peninsula guarded by two Venetian forts. The ‘Old Fortress’ is the most spectacular with ramparts and moat, courtyards, canons, museum and a lighthouse with dizzying views. Mainland Greece is just across the water and in the distance you can see Mount Pantokrator, Corfu’s highest point, just short of 3000 feet. Down town, the main square is occupied by a cricket ground, complemented by an English bandstand and the elegant Liston Arcade modelled on the Parisian rue de Rivoli. Bars and restaurants spread under the trees,

horse-drawn carriages wait for custom and the Old Town beckons, a maze of paved lanes and stepped alleyways, tall buildings and spires jostling for space, hidden squares, souvenir stalls and balconies draped in laundry and flower pots. Cruise ships dock on the western pier, yachts bob at anchor while fishermen unload the early morning catch. A short distance from the capital is the stylish Achilles Palace, not a ruin of ancient Greece, as one might expect, but a flamboyant 19th century building in neo-classical style, commissioned by Austrian Empress Sissi to nurse a broken heart. Achilles was her hero and painting and statues pay tribute among colonnades, stucco work and personal belongings of the empress and the next owner, Wilhelm II. But best of all is the fabulous panorama from the gardens, where you might feel just
like the beautiful Sissi or James Bond, since the palace featured as a casino in ‘For Your Eyes only’. The Kanoni peninsula is just a stone’s throw away, home to ‘Mon Repos’, an elegant mansion built by the British and later, summer residence of the Greek royalty and birthplace of Prince Philip. Everyone is welcome to explore the grounds and house now exhibiting centuries of the island’s history. Excavations around the estate have unveiled vestiges of Paleopolis, the ancient city of Kerkyra. But it is at the end of the peninsula that you find Corfu’s most iconic image. Set on a tiny islet, the Vlacherna monastery comes straight out of a fairy tale, flanked by a single cypress tree and the mere pencil line of a gleaming causeway.

CINEMA MADE OF STONE & SPIKE ISLAND

This month, cinema-goers are invited on a journey back to one of the most treasured periods in UK music. A time when clothes were baggier, haircuts bowl-ier, and the impact of rave culture was being felt everywhere in music, from indie icons to pop princesses. Manchester, or Madchester as it became known, was arguably the most fertile city to take hold of this crosspollination idea. Or perhaps more accurately, the names that emerged from there would be remembered longer than many counterparts elsewhere in the country. When considering new indie directions in the city circa 1990, it's impossible not to reference John Squire, Ian Brown, Mani and Reni. Despite only releasing two studio albums, there's no denying the impact The Stone Roses had with songs like I Am The Resurrection , Sally Cinnamon, Fool's Gold and Made of Stone. Considering all that, and perhaps more crucially the band's triumphant return to the live circuit last summer
and recent UK dates during June, including the sell out gig at Glasgow Green which attracted 50,000 people, it's not too shocking that no less than two of June’s box office releases feature these players in various stages of their notably sporadic careers. The first of which is the much-anticipated and already widely acclaimed Stone Roses: Made of Stone. Shane Meadows (This Is England, Le Donk and Scorzay-zee) has pieced the film together, and focuses on those comeback shows staged in Heaton Park, Manchester, over one weekend during 2012. Of course, there is also archive footage interspersed between the original scenes, but the most interesting aspect of this is the way it shows a band facing up to a series of high-pressure, make-or-break events. For years there had been rumours of a reunion, and it never came. As such, when these gigs were finally confirmed, the weight of expectation was matched only by the threat of an almighty fall from grace.

In the end, reassuringly, the concerts were lauded by public and press alike as some of the finest in Britain for some time. This, coupled with the fact the director clearly has a penchant for the Roses' work, makes the film more celebration than documentary, but when it comes to stories like this, who can really blame those involved for being sentimental?

INTERIORS BRING ME SUNSHINE Add extra space, make the most of precious sunshine and bring the garden into your house. Katherine Sorrell looks at what you should consider when planning to build a conservatory. Kit or bespoke? Kits tend to be cheap and DIY-friendly, as most of the parts (usually a PVCu f r a m e a n d polycarbonate roofing) are pre-cut and pre-drilled ready for installation. If you choose a bespoke design you’ll pay a great deal more, but you’ll also get something tailored to your individual requirements. Remember that unless a conservatory is well finished and appropriate to your property, it may detract from rather than add to its value. Size, siting and aspect A simple plant room or occasional-use home office can be squeezed into quite a small space, but for a useable room such as a sitting room, dining room or playroom, allow at least eight to ten metres of floor area. Overall, ensure that the proportions of your conservatory suit how you’re going to live in it and complement your property and garden. How will your conservatory adjoin the house? Is there a large enough exterior wall, and will you have to avoid obstructions such as trees or outbuildings? If possible, try to place it facing east or west, as north-facing conservatories tend to be cold, while south-facing ones can overheat. Walls and frames Traditionally, conservatories are built onto a 600mm high ‘dwarf’ wall made of brick or stone, in a colour and
style that matches or complements that of the main house. More recently, however, fully-glazed structures have become fashionable, offering a contemporary look and even more light. The most popular choice for the wall framework is PVCu, a material that is light, strong, requires little maintenance and is often made to stock lengths so it can be system-built quickly and easily. It isn’t an environmentally friendly choice, however, and its modern look can be inappropriate for a period property. Bespoke conservatories are generally made in hardwood, which can be carved into slender, intricate designs and suits older properties, though it is more expensive and requires regular maintenance. Glazing Double or triple glazing is essential to reduce heat loss from a conservatory at any time other than midsummer. The best glazing combines a low-emissivity coating that reflects heat back inside, and argon-gas filled units for maximum insulation. In a bespoke conservatory, you can specify tinted, etched, obscured, anti-sun, fire-resistant, self-cleaning or other specialist glass at a price.

For roofs, choose from glass or polycarbonate panels. The latter are light and strong, cheap, and quick and easy to fit, but tend to obscure light, particularly at thicknesses that achieve the same thermal performance as double glazing. Near trees, they may also suffer from algae growth. Heating Heating is essential if you plan to use your conservatory in winter and, to comply with building regulations, it must be independent from your main system. You may wish to place radiators against the dwarf walls or install under-floor heating, either of the warm-water pipe or electric cable variety, or you may consider electric trench heaters, hidden under grilles around the edges of the floor. Where there’s room for a chimney or flue it is perfectly possible to install an open fire on the wall that was the outside of the original house. Ventilation In the height of summer you’ll need to be able to provide a cool waft of air in your conservatory. Roof vents may be opened manually (with long-armed winding gear) or electrically, or may even be thermostatically controlled to open at the necessary time, with a sensor to close
them if it starts to rain. Trickle vents in the roof or side windows are useful, allowing warm air to flow out as necessary. You may also wish to add a central ceiling fan. Shading Not just necessary for privacy, blinds also provide shade from direct sunlight and reduce the build-up of heat. If the latter is a problem, your best bet is solarreflective roller blinds. Otherwise, the options include pleated fabric, pinoleum Roman blinds and slatted Venetian blinds. The blinds you choose will have an enormous impact on the style of the room as a whole, so take your time choosing a look that’s right for you. Remember to ask how easy it is to clean your chosen blinds, and consider whether you want to open and close them with pull-cords, rods or via remote control. Do I need permission? Many small, domestic conservatories don’t need planning permission, but there are conditions. For further information, look at www.planningportal.gov.uk and consult your local planning authority. How can I ensure the best finish and coverage from my foundation? It is important to find a foundation that is suited to your skin type as well as your requirements. Liquid foundations work best for most people because you can apply as much of it or as little of it as you like. Your foundation will work best - and last longer - if it’s applied to primed skin. Always ensure that you cleanse, tone and moisturise your face first and then apply a primer to create the ideal base. Using a damp make-up sponge, evenly apply your foundation to your skin, paying particular attention to blending well over your jaw line. When I use concealer under my eyes to cover dark circles I seem to draw attention to my fine lines. Do you have any tips to stop this? Always ensure that your eye area is well moisturised before you apply your concealer. Use an eye cream both in the morning and at night and choose a concealer that has a very creamy texture.
My skin is dry, but I have heard that foundation should always be set with a powder. Should I use it? Powder is essential for creating a flawless finish. If you have dry skin, try applying a little powder sparingly to your t-zone (this is the centre of your face, forehead, nose, front of cheeks and tip of chin), but not all over your face. I really like having a bronzed glow in the summer, but most of the bronzers I have used look fake and orangey on my fair skin. What should I do to avoid this? Bronzers are often very dark in colour and can look incredibly unnatural, especially on fair or ivory skin tones. Try using a bronze coloured pressed powder instead - the colour will be far more natural and you can build up both colour and coverage until you obtain the look you want.

I’m never sure what colour of blusher to choose or where to apply it. Do you have any tips for making sure I get it right? A lot of blushers can look harsh, so it’s very important to choose the right colour. Avoid bright pinks and reds or any other loud hue and instead select more neutral shades in peachy, soft pink tones. Remember that your aim when applying any make-up product is to enhance your beauty, so keep that in mind when applying your cosmetics and ensure you always aim to create a natural look. Blusher should be applied to the apples of your cheeks. To find them, look in the mirror and smile, then sweep the product evenly over that area. Be sure to keep colour to the outer part of your cheeks though as you do not want it to be placed too close to your nose.

FINANCE THE LONGEST HOLIDAY
Most of us shy away from considering our later years and what they might bring. There may be the joy of watching our family grow and develop with grandchildren, great nephews and nieces, but understandably we do not like the idea of becoming incapacitated. However, we should start thinking about what can be termed as the “longest holiday” of our lives sooner rather than later, as it is now clear that the government will not be funding the ongoing costs of any care that might be required. The reason for the government’s stance becomes clear when examining some of the facts. According to statistics from the Office for National Statistics, in 1992, 14.2% of the London populace were aged 65 or more. In areas where a large number of residents are retirees, such as within the county of East
Dorset, this figure was running at a rate of over 24%. The average percentage of people within this grouping for the whole of the UK, in 1992, was 15.8%. By the year 2033, estimates show that this figure will have increased to 22.9%. As the state is not going to assist in any meaningful form regarding ongoing care needs, we need to consider the cost of buying care as this is also rising. For example, maintaining professional quality care in one’s own home is now running at around £13.68 per hour. This means that just two hours of care each day mounts up to around £200 each week. Furthermore, full time fees in a care home now average at just over £27,000 a year rising to over £38,000 for nursing home fees. These fees are just for a basic level of care. To have any form of “luxury” is an additional cost.

MOTORS NEW RANGE ROVER SPORT
It was a case of double-oh-heaven for Land Rover at the New York Motor Show as it managed to steal the limelight for the launch of its new Range Rover Sport thanks to a rather special unveiling by none other than Daniel Craig. The Bond star helped the British manufacturer deliver the first car to the press launch in a live drive through the streets of Manhattan. The $1 million stunt saw sections of the city closed at rush hour and it had all the razzamatazz of the Oscars. One of Land Rover’s most important models, the Sport has notched up nearly 304,000 worldwide sales since it arrived in 2005. Now, following the successful births of the Evoque and Range Rover, it’s the racy middle brother’s time to shine. Based on the same aluminium platform as the Range Rover, but with 75 per cent of the parts changed, the Sport ushers in an Evoque-esque look, clever new technology, and some seriously impressive statistics. Powering the top-of-the-range model is a 5.0-litre supercharged V8, producing 503bhp and 625Nm of
torque. With a tuned exhaust system, it sounds incredible as it powers its way to 60mph in five seconds. The popular SDV8 diesel unit also makes a welcome return. With 332bhp and a mighty 700Nm of torque, it can crack 60mph in 6.5 seconds. There are further diesel and petrol units to pick from, but of more interest is the hybrid which is set to arrive later this year and combines a 3.0-litre diesel engine with a 50kw battery, a big leap forward for the model. Improvements have been made across the board. The new Sport is 33% lighter than its predecessor (that’s the weight of six average adults), the body is 25% stiffer and on average it’s 24% more efficient. Clever new technology on the Range Rover Sport includes an iPhone and Android app that lets you connect with their car. It can guide you back to where you parked it, tell you how much fuel is left, file company car mileages via email and even alert you if it thinks it’s about to be nicked. The clever kit includes in-car wifi for up to eight devices, a tracking system to aid recovery and the ability to dial emergency services in the event of a crash and alert them of your location.

OUT DOORS CAMPING ON A BUDGET If the luxury of an overseas holiday is just not going to be affordable for you this year, you probably don’t want to spend a fortune in this country either. However it doesn’t mean you have to go without a break completely because camping can be great fun and very affordable. You can’t just put the TV on, there are no computer games for the children and your time is spent exploring forests and cooking outdoors. It makes for a wonderful family bonding experience completely unlike renting a holiday home, and is lots of fun if you can find a group of you to go. There’s a huge retail market around camping, and an hour on one of the many equipment websites could have you thinking that the whole event is going to be far too expensive, especially if you aren’t sure if you’ll do it more than once. It doesn’t have to cost the earth though.

For example www.pitchup.com has 5000 UK and Ireland sites listed and it allows you to filter the features that are a ‘must’ for you and those that are a ‘nice to have’. For example you might want to visit a site that allows children and dogs (or doesn’t), has wifi access, or where there are cycling facilities nearby.
Sleeping bags might be necessary if you are hiking across the mountains, but chances are you’ll be driving to your camping site so take your own duvets and pillows with some old covers and that will be perfectly adequate. A night’s sleep on the hard ground isn’t comfortable though so you’ll need to find something to lie on. Cushions from outdoor chairs or a beach lilo will be good enough for children, but you might want to invest in an inflatable mattress for the adults.
Still not convinced? If you think this sounds like more hassle than it’s worth, you might want to consider ‘glamping’. It’s still sleeping in an open area surrounded by trees, but the living accommodation is provided for you. Many sites offer tipis, yurts, wooden huts or even a gypsy caravan.
Other equipment such as a gas stove, water containers and plastic plates might be offered to you if you put a wanted advert on Gumtree or on Freecycle and a polite plea to your friends could produce a surprising haul for you to borrow. You might not be able to look your glamorous best while camping and really, why would you? It’s time to get back

The bed and bedding for the adults is supplied as well as futons for the children. You are also given your own cooking and toilet facilities. BUGS AND BEASTIES based insecticide. • Use biological controls - they’re a great way to deal with these pests, totally safe for all other creatures and of course leave no residues. • Use a strong jet of water (perhaps by putting your thumb over the end of the hosepipe) to blast the aphids off plants, but do make sure that you do a thorough job or else they will soon be back up and causing damage.
Bugs and beasties are really thriving in this warmer weather, so just how should you deal with the most common problems you are likely to encounter at this time of year? Aphids Greenfly and blackfly, also known as aphids, can be a real menace as they suck sap from your plants and sometimes even transmit viruses at the same time. Aphids breed incredibly rapidly, so regular control is necessary or one or two individuals will turn into a huge colony. • Check plants regularly and either spray with a suitable insecticide or if you prefer not to use this type of chemical then consider spraying with a soap or plant oil
Caterpillars Caterpillars come in all shapes, sizes and colours, but can do a lot of damage as they munch their way through your plants and perhaps even into your vegetables. • Hand pick the pest where possible and either squash or place on the bird table. Remember many caterpillars feed in the evening, so they are easiest to spot at dusk or very early in the morning. • Spray with a suitable contact insecticide or better still use the Nemasys Caterpillar biological control. This latter control is the favoured option for organic gardeners who can’t solve the problem purely with hand picking. • Some caterpillars, in particular the Tortrix Moth produce quantities of fine webbing which they use to bind leaves or other plant parts together to create particularly safe shelters for themselves. These types can be especially difficult to control as it is hard for a pesticide to actually reach them. Hand picking or squashing is often the best answer. • Cover caterpillar-susceptible crops such as calabrese, broccoli and other brassicas with Envirofleece or Enviromesh. This will help to keep a wide range of pests, including caterpillars away from the plants. Woodlice Woodlice often cause a lot of concern, particularly if you find them lurking in and around sickly looking plants in your greenhouse. However, these little creatures are rarely responsible for doing that much damage in their own right as they simply do not have adequately strong mouthparts. This means that although they can indeed cause damage to soft new growth or occasionally to

soft-fleshed fruits such as strawberries, they are not actually able to tackle tougher plant growth. You may, however, see them at the ‘scene of the crime’ and presume that they have caused the initial damage but they have probably moved in to clean up a lot of the debris created by other creatures.

Earwigs Earwigs do cause quite a bit of damage, particularly on the flowers of plants such as clematis and dahlias, where they can nibble out large quantities of petal or occasionally leaf, leaving the plants looking decidedly moth eaten. One of the best ways of trapping earwigs is the traditional method using an inverted flowerpot on top of a bamboo cane. The bamboo cane and pot should be positioned amongst susceptible plants and the pot needs to be stuffed loosely full of hay, straw or similar material. The earwigs climb in there to hide and the pots can them simply be emptied out on a regular basis.
Keep the damage to a minimum in the first instance by ensuring that the plants are kept well watered; plants which are dry around the roots seem to be particularly prone to mildew attack. In addition try to ensure a good flow of air around the plants as stagnant, moist air seems to have a similar effect and can make matters worse very quickly. A bit of careful pruning or weeding often solves the problem.

TECH GUIDE EASY WAYS TO PROTECT YOUR PC
How to avoid a digital disaster These days, we’re doing more and more things digitally: our holiday snaps sit on hard disks, our music is often in MP3 and we’re as likely to download films as buy them on disc. That’s great when your PC’s working perfectly, but how do you make sure it stays that way? Protecting your PC falls into three key categories: protecting your valuable data, protecting your PC from online threats and protecting your PC from physical damage. Protecting the hardware is the easy bit. Surge protectors can prevent nasty spikes in the electricity supply from causing any damage, and if you have a laptop you can buy a Kensington Lock to secure it to something suitably hefty. A compressed air canister can blow dust out of fan vents and debris out of keyboards, and it’s a good idea to keep your PC away from extremes of temperature - a sunny room in summer is a terrible place to keep a PC. Be particularly aware of potential spills: liquid can destroy computers and you won’t believe the damage a tin of baby food can do to a keyboard. It’s a very good idea to keep food and drink and PCs separate. No matter how careful you are, computers can and do break: every hard disk will wear out eventually. That’s why it’s really important to keep backup copies of
anything important such as family photographs, home videos or iTunes downloads. You can do this in several ways - using an online service such as Mozy (www.mozy.co.uk) or Skydrive (skydrive.live.com), by burning them to DVD or by copying them to an external hard disk, but remember that if your backup is in the same place as the original, a domestic disaster such as a burst pipe might ruin both of them. It’s worth remembering too that services such as Facebook won’t compensate you if they accidentally delete or damage your online photo libraries; once again make sure that if it’s important, you have more than one copy in case of disaster. The other issue to worry about is “malware”, which is software designed to do nasty things. Sometimes malware spies on you, trying to obtain your passwords and other details; other times it just damages files or slows your PC to a crawl. The good news is that it’s relatively easy to avoid: Windows 7 and Windows 8 both have firewall software, which can prevent nasties getting in, and if you’re suspicious you can avoid most malware. Don’t open unsolicited email attachments from people you don’t know, and don’t let fake emails from the bank fool you: your bank will never send you programs or zipped documents in an email.

Always make sure you’re downloading from reputable sources, such as Microsoft.com, not Big Dave’s Totally Honest Download Page and make sure your web browser software is up to date. Old browsers are a real security risk. Last but not least, invest in some security software. You don’t need to spend any money - Microsoft’s Security Essentials is free (www.microsoft.com/security_essentials/), as is AVG Free anti-virus (free.avg.com) and AVAST
(www.avast.com), and there are also free tools to tune up your PC. One of our favourites is CCleaner (www.piriform.com/ccleaner), which works miracles on sluggish PCs, and we’d also recommend the free AdAware program (www.lavasoft.com) to prevent annoying software setting up shop on your PC. Keeping your PC safe isn’t difficult, time-consuming or expensive, but it’s worth doing. Think of PC protection like home insurance: you hope you’ll never need it, but if disaster strikes you’ll be glad you have it.

While many of us struggle to juggle the bills and cope with increasing workloads, it seems we are shielding man's - and woman's - best friend from the worst of the recession. Granted, few are going to the incredible lengths of billionaire heiress Tamara Ecclestone, daughter of Formula One boss Bernie, who was a weekly visitor to Harrods where she treated her pets to facials and claw treatments. And now she's splashed out on a doggie spa for her "babies" at her new ÂŁ60 million Kensington home, complete with grooming area with bone-shaped inlays, specially designed hairdryers to set their coats and a wardrobe for their clothes, leashes and collars. While only A-list celebs and the mega-rich can have doggy staff including a personal trainer, cook and masseur, new research by online retailer Littlewoods.com Pet Insurance has found that other dogs aren't far behind in the pampering stakes. The survey found that in its lifetime, the average British dog will: Walk 11,263 miles - equivalent to 430 marathons or Land's End to John O'Groats 13 times. Drink 12,402 bowls of water - enough to fill 10m x 9m swimming pool. Receive 1,158 bones to gnaw on. Get 9,912 hours of cuddles and pampering - equivalent to one year, one
month and 17 days - almost a tenth of their life. Spend a third of their life asleep. Have 25 all-expenses-paid holidays - 69% of dogs get two holidays a year with their owners. Chase cats from their property for fun 883 times. The findings also reveal that over half (58%) of dog owners would never dream of leaving their dog tied and alone outside a shop or alone in a car (49%). But it's not all sleep and treats for our pooch pals. Despite being social animals who adore human company, the British dog spends 20% or two years and six months of its life alone indoors - even if they are mostly sleeping off the walks and treats. Pet expert Pete Wedderburn says: "It's very refreshing to see the extremes that so many pet owners go to to keep their pets happy. Whilst cuddles, pampering and treats are vital, we must ensure that we spend just as much care and attention to their future health.� Gary Kibble from Littlewoods.com adds: "British dogs have never had it so good. While the rest of us have to count the pennies, calories and decades until retirement, we can only dream of a dog's life.�

The West End will soon be heaving again as tourists flock to see the hottest musicals. Many of them started life as novels, plays and poetry, and the authors’ words were adapted into catchy show-tunes and moving ballads. Here’s our pick of the best-loved tales to get the toetapping treatment.
Pygmalion George Bernard Shaw Long before Julie Andrews was beaten to the film role by Audrey Hepburn, My Fair Lady began life as Bernard Shaw’s triumphant comic play Pygmalion. The deliciously arrogant Professor Henry Higgins makes a bet that he can turn ‘guttersnipe’ Eliza Doolittle into a lady but she is far from being the downtrodden flower girl he believes her to be. It’s one of Shaw’s greatest critiques of the English class system and it’s absobloomin’-lutely hilarious to boot.
Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West - Gregory Maguire Written in 1995, Maguire’s novel is set in the land of Oz, way before Dorothy and Toto follow the yellow brick road. Elphaba is a girl who was born green, with sharp teeth and a disagreeable temperament. In Maguire’s vision, Oz is imaginatively recreated, with all its Technicolor splendour practically seeping from the page. But there are sinister goings on, adult themes and a not-so-happy-ending .The young Elphaba soon learns that it’s really not easy being green.
Les Miserables Victor Hugo Jean Valjean is a man who’s desperate to escape his past, but with a policeman like Javert on his tail, this escaped convict is going to have a battle on his hands. Les Mis has everything: mistaken identity, injustice and love, all set against the backdrop of the French Revolution. It’s the world’s longest running musical, and most recently gave us the cinematic opportunity to see Hugh Jackman without a shirt on.
Chitty Chitty Bang Bang Ian Fleming Chitty Chitty Bang Bang: The Musical Car was written by Ian Fleming of James Bond fame, who penned the original three-part series for his son. The idea has to be every child’s dream: a flying car. Inventor Caratacus Potts restores a second-hand vehicle and he and his children name it after the sound of a backfiring engine. It soon becomes clear that Chitty isn’t your average automobile and the family embarks on an adventure that involves kidnap and gangsters, cross-channel flying and some bizarre characters. When Chitty made it to the West End, audiences poured in to see the flying car in all its glory.
