DRAMA FOR CHILDREN IN THE COMMUNITY Raenbow Theatre School has been part of our community for 14 years. The school's focus is on building confidence, having fun and developing skills. There is no auditioning process. Raenbow believes that all children should have access to drama and music and all the positive elements this brings. Everyone is welcome. Ages range from 5 - 18yrs and this is split into four individual drama classes. Raenbow also has a Vocal Performance Class for children Age 8-18yrs. “Raenbow provides a safe and nurturing environment for children to develop their skills and confidence through drama and music,” said Anne Rae, (Artistic Director). “Everyone is encouraged to participate and grow at their own pace and there is a strong emphasis on mutual respect and support amongst our children.”

Raenbow's ethos of fun and encouragement is reflected in the number of pupils who stay with the group all through their school days. This year at Raenbow's annual end of year show, twelve (18yr olds) pupils said a tearful goodbye after celebrating an amazing 13 years with the theatre school. “It's always emotional when we say goodbye to our older students, especially when we've seen them grow so much, both literally and figuratively!” said Anne, “We remember the shy, nervous children and look at the strong, confident individuals they've become. We like to think that Raenbow had a hand in that!” Former pupil Erin Bond (18) would agree: “Being involved in Raenbow has been a great experience and really helped build my confidence as a person as well as a performer. I have made such good friends and I'd recommend the Raenbow family to anyone!” To discuss any aspect of the classes or to register, please contact Anne Rae on 0141 563 9655 or email anne@raenbowproductions.com

MUSIC NEW RELEASES Jake Bugg: Shangri La Still in his teens, Jake Bugg has already notched up a UK number one. The Nottingham artist's self-titled debut album topped the charts, producing hit singles such as 'Lightning Bolt' in the process. Wasting no time, the singer went back into the studio earlier this year. Sessions were obviously productive, with Jake Bugg due to release new album 'Shangrila on 18th November and will be trailed by a new single. 'What Doesn't Kill You' boasts Rick Rubin on production, and has a heavier, rock-influenced feel in comparison to the jaunty Mod-pop of his debut. With echoes of Bob Dylan, Oasis and Don McLean in his soulful voice, Bugg is hoping to follow up his praised debut disc with tunes recorded in Malibu with producing guru Rick Rubin.

Morcheeba: Head Up High After 2010′s disappointing “Blood Like Lemonade”, there's a lot riding on their new LP “Head Up High”. Although this is their 8th studio album, it will be their first release of new material since 2010. Fortunately, the album gets off with a strong start, going slap-bang back into Morcheeba's trip-hop roots, with new single Gimme Your Love. The beat is divine, and the overall end product is pure Morcheeba, with Edwards' soothing vocals making you just feel, well, great. Head Up High is a nice effort, however it remains to be seen whether it will retain the success of early albums Big Calm and Fragments of Freedom. With a career that has spanned 18 years, it appears that Morcheeba really are here to stay.

Moby - Innocents Moby is one of the most innovative and individual forces in electronic and popular music today. He has sold over 20 million albums, headlined Glastonbury, and is back with arguably one of the best albums of his career, Innocents. Much of Innocents recalls early Moby in the best way. Moby has been retrofitting antiquated styles and archaic sounds to the electronic age since Natural Blues - one of many enduring hits off of his 1999, twelve-millionplus selling international smash album Play. The epic, emotional and melodic nature of this album reminds us of Moby’s musical ingenuity and singles him out as one of music’s most creative forces.

HEALTH HYPNOTISE TO A LESS PAINFULL LABOUR With Kate Middleton reportedly using hypnobirthing to achieve a natural and less painful birth and many other women swearing by it for a more enjoyable labour, is this going to become the latest craze in childbirth? With her second child due imminently, Julia Faulks is certainly keen to give it a go… What is hypnobirthing? Hypnobirthing is a form of self-hypnosis used during labour, in the lead-up to labour, or even during a caesarean as a way of coping with pain, anxiety, fear and tension. With selfhypnosis being used for centuries to ease pain, what woman wouldn’t want to try something to help her body release as many endorphins (happy hormones) as possible in order to help with pain management? Just to be clear, hypnobirthing won’t take away all the pain, but it will help you remain calm and relaxed. It is said to work by easing the ‘fight or flight’ syndrome that can occur during labour where hormones are released that raise blood pressure and heart rate, meaning that labour can be less productive and more painful. Letting go. With the birth of my first child, ignorance was, quite simply, bliss - there were nerves, but as I didn’t have any idea how it was going to feel, there was less focus on the actual birth than I’m feeling as a second time mum-to-be. In other words, no, I didn’t quite forget the pain. I now realise I need to accept that I actually don’t have any control over my birth and labour, but at the same time, I can have control over the pain by using the techniques I’ve learnt from reading books, taking regular yoga classes and listening to my hypnobirthing CD. So whether it’s for your first birth or a subsequent birth, you have nothing to lose by trying it out. It’s also important to make sure that your birth partner is briefed on how you will be using the techniques you have learnt in order to remind you if you lose focus.

Choosing the right method for you You can start learning hypnobirthing at any time, but experts recommend that it’s most beneficial from 18 to 30 weeks. It’s also a good idea to step things up as you reach your due date by attending a refresher class, listening to CDs or reading your notes on a daily basis. The self-disciplined mum-to-be: If you have the time and can be organised, there’s nothing to say that you can’t teach yourself hypnobirthing skills in the comfort of your own home or by mixing things up with a regular yoga or hypnobirthing class. This is just what I am doing by downloading a hypnobirthing CD and attending a weekly yoga session where we do regular meditation and breathing exercises. The busy mum-to-be: If you’re too busy to find the time to read, then an intensive course will probably be the best option for you. You can find a list of courses in your local area by visiting the hypnobirthing.co.uk website. You may also prefer a private lesson with one-on-one attention. The sociable mum-to-be: Meet other mums and dads who want to learn this technique together and support each other as the big day approaches. Weekly classes will give you focus and help keep you on track as well as make sure that everything you learn is fresh in your mind.

TRAVEL BREAK TO BRUGES

If you love chocolate, beer, canals and charm, the Belgian city of Bruges, just a train drive away on Eurostar, offers the perfect destination for a city break. It is regarded as the best preserved medieval city in northern Europe as is fondly known as the Venice of the North. The historic city centre is surrounded by picturesque canals and enclosed within ancient city walls. Once inside, everything is close to hand. There is street after street of charming centuries-old houses, majestic gothic churches, plenty of chocolate shops and canalside bars, cafes and restaurants. For most tourists, the best feature of Bruges is the winding cobbled streets that lead to the main tourist areas of Market Square, with its open air cafes, and Burg Square, home to the oldest gothic city hall in Belgium. The belfry on Market Square is one of Bruges's most

distinctive landmarks. Its bell tower dates back to the 13th century and is over 80m high. If you climb the 366 steps to the top you'll be rewarded with panoramic views over the city's skyline. The cobbled streets boast plenty of tempting chocolate shops, so don't expect to stick to a healthy diet. The chocolatiers are highly skilled and their creations are nothing short of works of arts, so you can expect to pay quite a lot for the privilege of eating their creations. Once you've eaten all the chocolates you could want, you can wash it down with a speciality beer from one of the beer boutiques. There are also two historic breweries offering tours where you can sample Straffe Handrick, Brugs Tarwebier and Brugse Tripel beers straight from the barrel. You can buy chocolates and beer much cheaper in the local supermarkets, but that certainly spoils the shopping experience and the chocolate and beer won't

specialising in works by local artists and lacework.

The religious sites of Bruges are another big draw for tourists. The Basilica of the Holy Blood is a beautiful gothic church on Burg Square and houses a vial of blood that is believed to have come from Jesus. There is an ambient Romanesque-style chapel underneath the main church.

As Bruges is a perfectly compact city, getting around is easy on foot. If you want to sit back and enjoy the view you can hop on a boat for a tour of the city's beautiful canals. Tours only cost a few euros and it is the best introduction to Bruges. Like Amsterdam, cycling is a popular way to get around the city and you can rent a bike from many locations.

The Church of Our Lady dates back to the Romanesque and gothic periods. The east end of the church is home to the tombs of Charles the Bold and his daughter, Mary of Burgundy. The church also has a small but lovely Michelangelo sculpture of the Virgin and Child. One of the main cultural highlights of Bruges is the City Museum of Fine Arts. The collection mainly focuses on works by painters who either lived or worked in Bruges and spans several centuries. CINEMA BLUE JASMINE

Friends are chosen. Families are not. It's an age-old adage because, sometimes regrettably, it's true. As the latest work from Woody Allen goes to show. In many ways Blue Jasmine isn't simply the next addition to his rather sizeable directorial portfolio. Of course this is the same expert observer of human behavior - the man who made nervous tendencies and social paranoia comedy gold, the chap who has, over more recent decades, moved on to more tender, sophisticated smiles, proving his unarguably clear understanding of what it is to be a person. And the guy who has forgotten more about making movies than most will ever know. But there's something more vital about this outing when compared with his other contemporary work. Vicky

Cristina Barcelona, Midnight In Paris, Cassandra's Dream, and most of the other titles he has been responsible for post-2000 have all been well and good, but here there's an element that has been missing from much of his 21st Century work (and arguably that of the 1990s too). In this instance, he not only hits the 'what the average person would do' nail on the head, he also judges perfectly what the average person would do in the context of society in 2013. A subtle difference, but one that really elevates the viewing experience, and engages the audience more candidly, themes such as the fallout of excess, the integrity of honest blue collar folk, and the wanton abandon shown by the wealthy classes mark this out as a reflection on civilisation today.

To advertise call Scott or Natalie on 0141 945 4210 or email: info@sbdirectory.co.uk

25

OK, so nobody is claiming Blue Jasmine is a balanced work of documentary-like realism, but nonetheless it should strike a chord with most people, thanks in part to the excellent performances. Not least Cate Blanchett, who excels as the eponymous Jasmine, a stuck up and once well-to-do East Side New York darling whose filthy rich and unfaithful broker-type husband Hal (Alec

Baldwin) has just left her at the first sign of financial trouble. Now single and flat broke, she's forced to up sticks and head West to her sister's humble San Francisco home. In contrast to her silver spoon sibling, Ginger (Sally Hawkins), is a lot less fussy, and used to a more ordinary life. The right ingredients to fuel a family feud, from the moment the pair are reunited it's obvious they won't see eye to eye (with Jasmine complaining about the standard of first class flights upon arrival, despite apparently being poverty struck). Slowly but surely arguments take place, truths are spoken, lessons learnt, and we realise as viewers, that this could well be Allen's most relevant flick in decades, and a triumph of the modern domestic comedy drama, with darkly humorous jokes abound. A must see then..

Fill in the grid so that every row, every column, and every 3 x 3 box contains the digits 1 through 9. That’s all there is too it. There’s no math involved. The grid has numbers, but nothing has to add up to anything else. You solve the puzzle with reasoning and logic. It’s fun. It’s challenging. It’s addictive! Solving time is typically 10 to 30 minutes, depending on your skill and experience.

What is Myofascial Release? Myofascial Release (from myo, muscle, and fascia, band) is a unique approach to manual therapy pioneered by US physiotherapist John Barnes. At its simplest, MFR involves gentle stretching of tight, painful areas in the client's body using slow, sustained pressure or subtle traction. At its most profound, it reaches deep beneath these superficial restrictions to unwind the body's unconscious holding patterns which, though we may not know it, are often the root cause of our dis-ease. Fascia forms a continuous 3D web throughout the body, providing a framework of support for the skeleton, muscles, organs, nerves and blood vessels. Without fascia to hold us up we would collapse in a heap. A healthy fascial system is relaxed and resilient, acting as our body's shock absorber. After injury, however and injury can be both physical and emotional - our fascia begins to tighten and harden in the areas affected. Over time, as the body tries to compensate for these restrictions, it creates further imbalance and tension at sites ever more distant from that of the original trauma. Thus a problem which originated in the

knee/hip could eventually cause pain in the shoulder/neck, and vice versa. Research suggests that the body remembers everything that happens to it and stores that information in the fascial tissue. These subconscious memories of past experience may be associated with postural positions, actions or emotions. The body/mind is also capable of creating habits and bracing patterns to protect us from physical and/or emotional pain and discomfort. While these holding patterns are essential short-term coping mechanisms they can persist into the longer term, resulting in a new set of problems for the body. MFR practitioners seek out underlying patterns of fascial restriction and follow them to source. We do not treat by numbers. No two clients are identical, even if they present with apparently identical problems. Find the pain, yes - but look elsewhere for the cause. For more information on how MFR can help promote health and wellbeing, contact Jane Meek, MFR practitioner, on 07759 182236.

Myofascial release (MFR) uses gentle pressure and traction to unlock restrictions in the body’s fascial system or connective tissue. MFR tracks these restrictions to source, addressing the root cause of a problem rather than just the symptoms.

INTERIORS TEXTURES FOR INTERIORS The way a space feels is just as important as the way it looks. Interiors expert Katherine Sorrell reveals how an imaginative use of different surfaces can make an impact in your home. Colours and patterns may be the first things you notice when you walk into a room, but spend any time in it and the textures become increasingly important. From the polish of smooth ceramic to the soft give of cashmere, the nubbly weave of wicker to the homely warmth of felted wool, not only is the right surface in the right area a functional necessity, but an appreciation of texture also enables us to relate to our surroundings in a direct and sensual way, making us feel comfortably and securely at home. Textures, in short, bring a room to life and make a house a home. Underpinning every design scheme, textures relate to just about every aspect of a room, from size and lighting to colour schemes and style. Consider this aspect of room design as layering one texture with another (floor, walls, upholstery and window treatments are the basics), then adding touches of one or two more (cushions, lamps, vases, rugs and so on). At first the concept may sound challenging, but it will soon come entirely naturally. Start with key areas - upholstery or loose covers in a fabric that’s neither so shiny and slippery that you slide off it the moment you sit down, nor so rough that it’s uncomfortable and snags instantly. Curtains that draw easily, worktops that are tough and durable,

floorboards that can be cleaned easily. A ‘quiet’, fairly smooth texture is likely to be the backbone of most schemes, but the interest is all in how it is combined and contrasted with other elements. If you wanted to bring out the cosiness of a small bedroom, say, you could combine a fluffy rug, matt-painted walls, velvet curtains and chintzy quilts. Or, to emphasise a bright and airy living room, the main features might be varnished floorboards, glossy white woodwork, sheer curtains and glass or chrome lamp bases. The aim is to achieve pleasing contrasts rather than clashes, so avoid too many unusual, eye-catching textures in one space - think trims and accents such as a woollen throw with an edging of silk satin, or a plain cotton sofa piled with embroidered and appliquéd cushions, for example.

Texture has an important part to play in the overall style of a room. Modern rooms tend to feature harder, shinier surfaces, whereas a vintage or ethnic look is more rustic and varied in texture. You only have to think of the contrast between a contemporary room that features lots of stainless steel, chrome and mirror, with a more nostalgic room that contains quilts, knitting, embroidery and lace, to understand how important texture is in setting a scene. Using understated colour schemes and simple patterns allows textures to speak for themselves. This is where a palette of neutrals comes to the fore just think of the beautiful, natural hues of sisal, shell, stone or wicker. A dash of brightness may add a focal point, but the subtlety is in the surfaces themselves. The contrasting finishes of different types of paint can add to your textural scheme, from ultra-matt emulsion to the shiniest gloss even if

Superb Organic Cleaning of Carpets, Curtains, Upholstery and Leather

they are all exactly the same shade. Lastly, remember that good lighting shows off textures to their best advantage. Try to pick out interesting features and highlight them with uplighters, spotlights or angled lamps placed appropriately. Once you have grasped the basic principles of using texture, you can incorporate all sorts of different elements: distressed or varnished wood, woven willow, worn stone, foxed mirror, distressed leather, fake fur, buttons, raffia and crochet, to name but a few. Look for interesting combinations and there are even more exciting and delightful opportunities a feather trim around a plain fabric lampshade, perhaps, or something as simple as a set of monogrammed napkins contrasted with pearl-handled cutlery. Textural possibilities are endless and, with just a little effort, you can achieve a look that is individual, intriguing and truly remarkable.

BEAUTY ALL ABOUT HAIR EXTENSIONS If you dream of long, luscious locks but are stuck with limp and lifeless tresses, you might be tempted to turn to hair extensions for a quick and easy fix. Celebrities everywhere wouldn’t be seen without them, and more and more they are becoming an essential beauty buy for many women. But there is a lot to consider before you take the plunge and invest in extensions, and that’s why we have compiled a guide to which ones are right for you and your hair. Human Hair or Synthetic Hair? Extensions can be made from either real human hair, synthetic hair or a mixture of both. The more expensive the extensions are, the more likely they are to be made from 100% human hair. This is because using the real thing makes for a head of manageable, natural-looking locks that can be styled, coloured and cared for just like your own hair. If you’re planning on having a lot of extensions added to your hair and want to wear them for a long time, it is essential that you invest in the best you can afford and have them professionally applied in a good salon. Always make sure that the extensions you buy are ethically sourced. If you want to wear just a few extensions, and only for special occasions or a night out, then synthetic hair should be ok for you. It’s a lot cheaper than real hair, but remember that in most cases it can’t be heat styled - so you’ll have to decide on what look you want and stick to it. It also can be a lot more difficult to manage and does become easily tangled and matted, so wear it sparingly and make sure you keep it in good condition.

Generally many brands organise their colours in the same way as hair dyes, so that it’s easy to determine the correct hue for you. Colours range from the lightest shade of blonde to the deepest shade of black and incorporate all warm and cool variations.

The Right Hue for You What look do you want to achieve when you’re wearing extensions? If you prefer a very natural look that blends seamlessly with your own hair, it is essential to find

And, if you fancy a few sections of bold colour, then your options are limitless. You can easily pick up extensions in a range of vibrant shades, and what’s more they are usually cheaper and are perfect for occasional use.

extensions in a shade that matches it perfectly.

Texture and Style Extensions come in a vast range of textures, so that they will blend with your own locks. There are straight lengths, spiral curls and everything in between. It’s important to match the texture to your own hair for the extensions to lie and fall properly. Application There are many ways to apply extensions to your hair and some can be more comfortable, gentle and affordable than others. Remember hair extensions are meant to enhance your hair, not damage it, so always make the health and condition of your own hair a priority. Clip-in/Tie-in - These extensions are ideal for occasional use and can be taken out and applied easily to achieve a variety of different looks. Because of the way they are joined to the hair, they don’t always look natural and can be obvious to the touch. Heat Fusion - These can provide long lasting results, with a natural looking finish. However, because heat is used in the application process, this method can damage your own hair. Cold Fusion - Unlike heat fusion, cold fusion doesn’t use any heat for application, meaning that your natural hair won’t be damaged. The

& Beyond y b a B Childrenswear

results are very natural looking, as well as long lasting. Weft - This can look very natural when applied correctly, although to the touch a weft can feel chunky if not applied with skill. Microbead - These extensions don’t need glue or heat to be applied, which limits damage to your own natural hair. The extensions are fixed in place using a small bead. With a little bit of thought and preparation, you will soon be on your way to those long, luscious locks you’ve been dreaming about.

FINANCE HOW TO MAKE AN EXTRA £100 A WEEK FROM HOME Stuck at home and need to make some extra cash? There are lots of ways you can do it. Here are just a few of them. Be a Virtual Assistant A Virtual Assistant (VA) is someone who works as a secretary outside the office from their computer at home. It can involve a wide range of tasks, from simply answering phones and sending emails to bookkeeping, business planning, desktop publishing and even event management. The more specialised your skills are, the more you’ll be able to charge.

fairly sporadic but it requires minimal effort and you have nothing to lose, not to mention the fact that it’s all done from the comfort of your own home.

To be a successful VA, you’ll definitely need to be computer-savvy and have experience of admin work already. It’s also helpful to join the Society of Virtual Assistants (www.societyofvirtualassistants.co.uk) which runs courses and offers support to VAs of all levels.

You can earn up to £50 a month if you are willing to put in the hours. Websites such as www.opinionoutpost.co.uk, uk.mysurvey.com and www.valuedopinions.co.uk offer free paid surveys (N.B. you should never be asked to pay to join up or hand over your credit card details).

You can make good money as a VA. Agencies like VA4U.com charge up to £150 per client per day, but typically you would charge between £15 - £25 per hour for routine admin work done by phone or email.

A good tip would be to set up a separate email account just for this type of job so your personal one doesn’t become flooded with spam.

Giving your opinions Make £50 - £100 a time in cash for giving your opinions in focus groups. Companies like Sarosresearch.com need people of all ages and in various parts of the country to join a focus group every now and then to give opinions on anything from shampoo to high-end cars. There’s free food and drink too. If you have the time and don’t mind answering questions you could do online surveys. The work is

Then there are online competitions. For example, Freepostcodelottery.com is free to enter and gives away £20 every day at noon to one of the postcodes on their list. There’s no catch, but you will have to check each day to see if your number has come up. Check our competitions page on Moneymagpie.com for the latest competitions online. Set up an online buying and selling business Do you collect dolls or electronic gadgets or some other low-priced collectible? If you’re a little knowledgeable

about a particular niche area you could make money by buying and selling items online. Pick a narrow product area (such as Cindy dolls or NatWest piggy banks or Beano comics) that you are knowledgeable about and then scour car boot sales, charity shops and jumble sales for cheap items that you could sell for a profit. Then set up a seller’s account on eBay or eBid and start selling. Make sure you keep a squeaky-clean rating as buyers are much more likely to buy from you if you have 100% approval. Always send items on time and package them up nicely to make it look professional. Of course you can make money online purely by selling your junk on a regular basis. It can become secondnature and an easy way to bring some cash in each week. In fact, once you are used to that you can sell on behalf of other people. Take in their items and sell them online taking a 30% cut of the profit (once you have taken out your advertising, postage and packing costs).

Propagate seedlings If you have green fingers and a decent-sized greenhouse (or somewhere else to place plant pots) you could make around £600 a week between February and October by propagating seedlings. Grow plants that you then sell at car boot sales and at local garages and shops or to friends and neighbours. To make a profit you need to choose carefully the type of plants you are going to grow. Some seeds cost £2.99 for six and some cost £2.99 for 1,500. You do the maths. Also, if you’re going to grow a lot of plants you will need a lot of pots. Try to do a deal with your local garden centre to buy the pots that they would usually throw away for a discounted price. Also go online and bulkbuy compost to cut your costs there. Fun fact: More than two thirds of people in the UK have sold something second-hand. The average amount raised per person in the last 12 months is £106.15. CDs and DVDs are the most popular second-hand item, followed by books and clothes. By Jasmine Birtles, Moneymagpie.com

MOTORS ASTON MARTIN RAPID S

What is it? Meet Aston Martin’s slightly awkward-looking four-door saloon, but now with added adrenaline. Not that the standard car really needed an additional dose of go-go juice, but that’s never stopped the Gaydon massive from administering aid before. As part of a mid-life refresh the S has more power and even more refinement, and is the only model in the maker’s range that comes with two rear seats. What’s under the bonnet? An almighty lump, that’s what. The ageing 6.0-litre V12 is still in situ a last hurrah before AMG work their black magic under the hoods of Britain’s finest but for now it has even more grunt. Power is up 80bhp to 550bhp and this helps the 60mph dash time tumble under that allimportant five second barrier, but only by a tenth of a second. Top speed is a heady 190mph and with those sorts of figures fuel economy and emissions suffer. The former is a rather woeful 19.9mpg and CO2 is puffed out at a rate of 332g/km. What’s the spec like? In a word: glorious. The leather is soft, the carpets thick and the wood burnished. Several cows were sacrificed

to coat most surfaces inside and the instruments are as beautiful as one of the finest Swiss watches. Standard kit includes Bluetooth, sat nav, front and rear parking sensors (you need them, this thing is Ark Royal long), tracking device and a stunning 1000W Bang & Olufsen stereo. Some of the controls are a little small and fiddly, particularly the buttons in the centre console. Those rear seats have the option of TV screens (£2,495) and you can go mad on the other options too. Even the paint of our test car was an additional £3,495, but it’s worth it for the name alone: Skyfall Silver. Any rivals? A few. The biggest is the Porsche Panamera. An ugly car from some angles, stunning from others, it’s a super-sized sports car that’s superb to drive, especially in GTS form. The new Mercedes S-Class will be a potent rival too as will Audi’s luxurious A8. Even BMW’s 7 Series will have a sniff in this category, where price matters far less than the badge that’s on the bonnet. What’s it like to drive? It’s not the most dynamic of Aston Martin’s range, that’s for sure, but this is a GT car to transport you and the family with ease. It’s relaxed and sedate when you want

drive an Aston anywhere without gaining nods of appreciation and that very rarely happens in ostentatious equivalents from the likes of Ferrari or Lamborghini. There’s a certain respect for Aston Martin, and I like that. The Rapide S is a big car and it feels it on the road and that engine really is starting to feel dated in terms of economy, but the power is impressive and if you need those e x t r a r e a r s e a t s i t ’s w o r t h considering… if you have the cash, of course. by James Baggott, Managing Director of Blackballmedia.co.uk

it to be, but can still pick up its skirt and go when you put your foot down. As the revs rise the butterflies in the exhaust containing the cacophony of noise open, releasing a guttural V12 groan. The rear seats are comfy too, even for adults, but that said, headroom can be a little cramped. Our Verdict The Aston Martin Rapide S is a stunning way to travel. It’s luxurious, looks sharp and is caked in cool. You can’t

LIVING DOES YOUR BODY LANGUAGE SEND THE RIGHT MESSAGE?

Here’s a game to play next time you’re stuck on a crowded platform, waiting for a train, or any place where you can observe people milling together. Let your eye roam over the crowds as they come and go, and select one individual who stands out to you. It doesn’t count if you spot the identical twin of a movie star or someone dressed as a kangaroo. We’re talking about averagely dressed, normally behaved commuters. Who catches your attention, and why? It’s likely that you’ll find yourself drawn to the person who’s walking along purposefully, head held high. That person will seem alert and confident: interested in everything that’s going on around them. They have what is known as “positive body language”. We are instinctively attracted to such people: we all want to be liked and we feel confident that if we spoke to them, we would receive a positive response. Alternatively there are people we would hesitate to approach because we fear a negative reaction.

morning and you catch a reflection of yourself in a shop window, you’ll know exactly what I mean: shoulders hunched, eyes focused on the ground, grumpy expression… Even though you may be sad, tired or bored rather than angry, your posture and expression are enough to make others avoid you. I was recently reunited with an old school friend I hadn’t seen for many years. I remembered him as a teenager with a sunny, open disposition so when we met up again I was shocked to find that he’d turned into a very different character. Throughout our meeting he perched uncomfortably on the sofa, arms folded across his body, and barely made eye contact when he spoke. Although I tried to keep the discussion going by asking him various questions, his replies were brief and the conversation soon dried up. After a decent interval I made my excuses and left. As I said goodbye he looked directly into my eyes and smiled, and for the first time I saw a spark of his old self. He said: “It’s been great talking to you. I have to admit my social life is a bit of a disaster area these days.”

When I arrived home I thought long and hard about my old friend’s lacklustre social skills. He didn’t seem particularly unhappy or troubled, so I began to suspect that he had simply lost confidence in his ability to communicate. Perhaps he was reluctant to talk because he didn’t feel he had anything worth saying. Feelings of insecurity or self-doubt can have a powerful effect upon the way you interact with others, often leading to the very outcomes you dread. In the same way many women claim to feel ‘invisible’ when they reach a certain age - complaining that men no longer look at them and younger people seem to look right through them - but their body language could be partly to blame. When you feel unattractive you send out unconscious signals that say “Don’t look at me”. Humans decide whether or not they want to interact with another person by interpreting a wide range of signals. These are based on facial expression as well as the subtle messages conveyed by the rest of the body. For example, tension in the hands might indicate aggression, arms tightly folded across the body suggest that you are feeling defensive and downward glances can make you seem sulky and uncommunicative.

This reading of body signals is largely unconscious and may be open to misinterpretation, so it pays to be aware of what your own body is saying. Once you start to analyse your own behaviour, you can start to make changes. Check your posture - do you stand upright, with a straight spine and erect head, or do you slouch? Do you pick up your feet when you walk, or do you shuffle? If you want to alter the way you are perceived by others, then try out the techniques used by politicians and celebrities when they ‘work’ a room. Take a deep breath, relax your shoulders, lift your head and walk in. As you enter, look around, smiling: try to meet the gaze of as many people as possible. When you talk to someone on a one-to-one basis, look them directly in the eye, ask questions and generally give them the kind of attention you’d want to receive yourself. You’ll be surprised at how much impact you can make by simply changing your body language. It may not bring back the sort of attention you enjoyed when you were in your twenties, but it will encourage others to actively seek you out and - more importantly remember you long after you’ve left the room.

GARDENING

KITCHENS FOR LIVING

GROUNDCOVER Groundcover plantings are a wonderful way to create gorgeous carpets of colour in your garden, whatever its size and wherever it’s located. But what’s so special about groundcover growing, when is it most useful and when should you start? Slopes are a common feature in gardens, and they can be hard to manage, but with ground cover planting, once it’s established you’ll not have to do acrobatics to keep it looking good. The initial few months will take some effort, but once growing well, most groundcover planting needs little if any maintenance except perhaps a very occasional trim, some food and water in drier weather. By definition, groundcover plantings will cover the ground, and as they cover the soil surface they will have a superbly smothering effect on the weeds, killing weedlings and deterring further weeds from appearing. The denser the groundcover planting, the better the effect. Autumn is a great time for planting. Trees, shrubs, climbers and herbaceous plants that go in to the ground at this time of year often establish extremely well as they have the luxury of enjoying the relatively warm and yet moist soil, a perfect place for new roots to grow out and establish rapidly. To ensure a good groundcover experience, it’s worth investing a bit of time and effort in to the preparation. Clear the area of weeds, digging out all tough weeds completely if you can. Fork the soil over, removing debris such as large stones or buried rubbish and then fork in plenty of well-rotted manure or garden compost, and perhaps a little slow-release feed too. If you’re planting up a slope, it’s worth trying to secure the soil a little too, as all that preparation and weed clearing will have loosened the surface and made it prone to erosion. Once growing well the roots of the plants will help to secure the slope brilliantly, but in the meantime, use landscape fabric pinned down onto the

surface of the slope. Simply cut an ‘X’ shape in the fabric at each planting position, and plant through the hole made when you peel back the flaps formed by the ‘X’. An added advantage is that the landscape fabric will also prevent weeds growing up from the soil. Cover the surface of the fabric with chipped bark or a bit of soil to camouflage it if you wish. Although you are after a carpet of foliage and maybe also flower, don’t be tempted to cram the plants in too closely. Given time they will form the desired effect if planted at the correct spacing. But if you fall in to the trap of planting them elbow to elbow, then they are more likely to become stressed and miserable, more prone to disease and will need thinning out.

Groundcover plantings need the same sort of maintenance that you’d give if the plants were used individually or in small numbers in a garden border or bed. Make sure the plants are kept just moist at the roots until they’re well established and feed occasionally. By choosing varieties of plants which are recommended for use as groundcover you’ll be unlikely to have to do much if any pruning. So what should you choose to grow? Foliage that is attractive and interesting makes a wonderful groundcover planting and if you wish you can add a few more flamboyant flowering plants to the mixture too. Used as ‘dot plants’, the flowering additions will have more impact and look great set against a backdrop of pretty foliage. By using plants with interestingly shaped leaves or variegated leaves your leafy planting will look even better. You may want your groundcover planting to look stunning at any one particular time of year, but if you’re after a reasonable effect all year around, then select at least some of the plants you use from the evergreens. These may lose their leaves, but they do so gradually so you’ll never be left with totally bare soil.

TECH GUIDE THE HEAT IS ON

Cool gadgets to keep you warm this winter. Every year, heating our homes becomes ever more expensive, and as a result we do all kinds of things to cut our bills: we make sure our homes are properly insulated, turn the thermostat down a notch and do our best to save energy. But no matter what kind of heating system you have, there's a very good chance you're heating your entire home rather than the room you're using. Wouldn't it be great if you could heat just the bit you're in - and do it quickly so you don't have to sit shivering? That's the thinking behind Dyson's fan heaters, which use the firm's "air multiplier" technology to send a steady stream of hot air without the buffeting you get from normal fan heaters. They aren't cheap - expect to pay £249 for a heater, or £349 for one that can cool air in the summer - but they're safe, effective and extremely efficient. If you'd rather not spend quite so much on a heater, halogen heaters are worth considering: instead of heating the air, they heat whatever you point them at and they do so instantly, which is a real boon if you've just come home from a typically cold November day. Prices start at around £15 for a basic model, and you

can also buy models designed for heating outside areas. For larger rooms, it's worth looking for heaters that can rotate: that enables them to heat a wider area than immobile heaters can reach. Make sure they have antitilt shut-offs too, so that they automatically switch themselves off if they're accidentally toppled. The cheapest heaters around are fan heaters, which as the name suggests use a fan to blow air over a heating element. According to the Energy Saving Trust they aren't less efficient than other kinds of heating, but the less powerful the fan the longer it'll take them to heat a room: we wouldn't recommend trying to heat a highceilinged room with an £8 fan heater from the local supermarket. If you spend a lot of time using a computer you'll know that your fingers are often the first things to feel the cold. Technology has the answer to that too: V8 Tools’ heated computer keyboard is exactly what it sounds like, although for the time being you'll need to import one from the US. Avoid USB-powered heating devices: products such as USB-powered Monkey Hand

Warmers are novelty gifts, not practical products. If you often suffer from frozen feet there's a gadget for that too: the AccuLux foot warming mat, a flexible heating mat that's designed to make your tootsies toasty. Expect to pay £39.99. Humans aren't the only creatures to benefit from heating pads: they’re available for pets too. A quick search on eBay uncovers all kinds of electric pad heaters for dog and cat beds, with prices as low as £19.99. If you'd rather not leave anything electrical near your pets, microwaveable heat pads do much the same job for slightly less money. While you're microwaving things for your pets, why not warm up some pads for yourself? You can try a pair of microwaveable slippers, a microwaveable hand warmer or a microwaveable neck wrap, and if you're suffering from sports injuries or arthritis you might find they help ease your symptoms too. Alternatively you might like to try the Heat In A Click Muscle Warm Pad, which quickly heats up to 54 degrees celsius and last for 20 minutes to two hours depending on the size of pad you buy.

PETS THE ROODLE Celebrities like Paris Hilton may carry their dogs in their Gucci handbags, accessorised to the glittering collar. But the recent trend in designer dogs seems to suggest that everyday people are catching this unfortunate trend. Instead of simply buying diamante collars, however, people are demanding cross bred dogs with catchy marketing names. We've had the Spoodle, the Groodle, the Labradoodle, the Spanador, the Cavador, and the Retrievador. Now folks, meet the Roodle. The roodle is a cross between a poodle and a rottweiler. They are the successful creation of a breeder from Melbourne, Australia Fred Freeman. Roodles have the crinkly coat of a poodle, but larger. They are quite stocky, and fairly big, with long floppy ears. Mr Freeman describes the dogs as having the intelligence of a rottweiler, yet docile and easy to train. His roodles are also non aggressive, do not moult, don't smell, and are low on the allergy scale. The idea of creating a non allergic dog was what started the original breeder of the labradoodle, Wally Conran. Wally was the Manager of the Royal Guide Dog Association in Australia at the time. Someone needing a guide dog who was non allergenic contacted the Guide Dog Association, and Wally successfully crossed a labrador with a poodle that fitted this purpose. So, the origins of the labradoodle were quite in keeping with the way many of what are now considered pure bred dogs were created. That is, they were created with a specific purpose in mind. But the popularity of the labradoodle has created a new set of problems. Namely, many unscrupulous people, some with no experience breeding dogs, and others with none, or little, experience breeding labradoodles or other similar crosses, jumped on the bandwagon.

Demand meant that these dogs were expensive, supply was short, and this attracted many into this new field. But breeding dogs, especially across different breeds, is not simple. In Wally Conran's original efforts, not all labradoodles were low in allergy. And when it comes to trying to come up with new mixes, a lack of knowledge can produce disastrous results. For instance, breeding two dogs with similar genetic weaknesses can lead to the new litters born with an increased chance of the health problems associated with those breeds.

To advertise call Scott or Natalie on 0141 945 4210 or email: info@sbdirectory.co.uk

59

Other factors include disposition. If people are expecting certain traits based on what decent breeders have produced, and they pay a lot of money for a dog that turns our to be completely different, those dogs may well end up being abandoned. And given that badly bred rottweilers can be very aggressive, if the roodle trend takes off in the same way, this could be a disaster all round. Especially so if a family with children bought one expecting the docile nature of the roodles created by Mr Freeman, and end up with an aggressive, large dog. Normally, contacting an association for a recommended breeder would solve this type of problem. But in this brave new world of designer dogs, this may not always be the case. Especially if the experience with the labradoodles is anything to go by. The breeders at Rutland Manor and Tegan Park in Australia started their stock from labradors, poodles and labradoodles from Don Evans, another breeder who had discovered the breed independently of the Guide Dog Association. Those labradoodles were legitimate labradoodles, and they kept records of all

Bathed & Brushed Groomed (Clip or Hand strip) Nails Clipped Inner Ears Plucked Eyes Cleaned & Trimmed

subsequent breeding. They also determined which coats were low allergenic. They conducted extensive research and breeding programs to arrive at the dog that has become characterized as a 'labradoodle'. Contrary to popular knowledge, they are not the product of exclusively mixing in labradors and poodles. Other breeds were used occasionally, for certain characteristics. The International Labradoodle Association was set up originally to help maintain the quality and characteristics of this new designer dog. Yet they now are seeking to call all labrador-poodle crosses 'Australian labradoodles'. If this is successful, consumers will have no way of knowing whether they are buying what they think they are, and what their health requirements determine they need. The end result will be more abandoned dogs being euthanased because of a careless association and even more careless breeders. It does not bode well for the roodle.

BOOKS WHAT’S IT WORTH?

It’s said that money makes the world go round and it’s certainly provided adequate fodder for fiction writers over the years. Here’s our pick of the best books on bucks…and how to spend them.

Bonfire of the Vanities By Tom Wolfe Here’s written proof that life can turn on a dime. Bond trader Sherman McCoy thinks he has life pretty sussed, with a swanky Park Avenue apartment, trophy wife and even a bit on the side. Then he’s involved in a hit and run and his life starts to come undone. Wolfe’s novel exudes money, and all the excesses of the 1980s come spilling out of the pages.

Confessions of a Shopaholic By Sophie Kinsella You write about solving financial problems for a living, but your own bank account is firmly cemented in the red. Journalist Rebecca Bloomwood is a selfconfessed shopaholic, who becomes increasingly entangled in her own intricate web of credit card debts and unpaid bills, all the while dispensing advice to other poor financial flops. Can she ever see her way clear to a debt-free but romance-full life?

The Great Gatsby By F. Scott Fitzgerald The very embodiment of the excesses of the so-called Jazz Age, The Great Gatsby himself is the millionaire Jay Gatsby who resides at West Egg, Long Island. For years he’s been in love with Daisy Buchanan, who now lives across the water at East Egg and remains as elusive and just out of his grasp as ever. Determined to win back Daisy’s affections, Gatsby holds lavish party after lavish party in the hope that someday, she will walk back into his opulent hallway, and his life. This cautionary tale reveals what happens when American Dreams turn out to be anything but, and Gatsby learns, to his detriment, that all that glitters may not be gold.

The Way We Live Now By Anthony Trollope If you thought financial scandal was limited to modern day bankers and politicians then think again. This is Trollope’s great satire of the financial wheeler-dealings of the 1870s. Augustus Melmotte is a financier with a dubious past who relocates to London and sets the city alight with gossip and intrigue. Like Jay Gatsby, he holds lavish parties in order to extract what he wants from people, in this case investors, and so begins an intricately- woven tale of greed and dishonesty.
