MUSIC NEW RELEASES Kaiser Chiefs: Education, Education, Education & War After more than 15 years, four albums, platinum record sales, top ten singles and 3 Brit Awards, it would have been simple for Kaiser Chiefs to sit back and enjoy the warm glow of having been one of Britain’s most treasured bands, but the departure of founder member and drummer Nick Hodgson, an event that might have derailed the band entirely, instead has lit a fire that has carried the Kaiser Chiefs forward, through a period of reinforcement, to create an album that is considered one of their best to date. The album was recorded in Atlanta, Georgia - a move that gave the band the opportunity to view themselves from a new perspective. “In a weird way working in America has been good for us, because unlike some bands who work in America and end up sounding American, I think it’s solidified how British we are,” says lead singer Ricky Wilson.
Coldplay: Ghost Stories After nearly three years, alternative rock band Coldplay are gearing up to release their sixth studio album Ghost Stories on May 19th. Since the arrival of ‘Yellow’, Coldplay claimed a legion of fans worldwide and, with each successive album, the band has broken new grounds both artistically and commercially and Ghost Stories looks follow on suit. The sound track ‘Magic’, is a return to Coldplay's traditional form as lead singer Chris Martin lays down his famous tones with an easy going and typically romantic pop track, ‘Midnight’, the album's fifth track has their usual stadium histrionics for fluttering synths. This album will surely be a number 1 when it is released.
Paolo Nutini: Caustic Love The Scottish singer-songwriter is back and sounding better than ever. Paolo Nutini released his eagerly anticipated new album 'Caustic Love' on April 14th. Produced by Paolo and Dani Castelar, the album features 12 sparkling new Nutini original songs that sound like no one else. First single 'Scream (Funk My Life Up)', already on the national airwaves, is just a taste of what is to follow on the album. Highlights include the epic 'Iron Sky', the r&b tease of 'One Day', the bluesy swagger of 'Let Me Down Easy’, the beauty of 'Better Man' and 'Fashion' featuring Janelle Monae. This album is definitely worth a listen.

TRAVEL GREEK ISLAND HOPPING IN STYLE
It’s a well known route for student backpackers, but at the other end of the market aboard a luxury cruise ship, the attractions of Greek island-hopping are many. The beautiful Greek islands are just perfect for a spot of hopping, as many students will tell you. But you don’t need to live out of a backpack and navigate your way round the island’s hostels – hop aboard a luxury liner for a tour of the very best places in Greece. Santorini One of the worlds most dramatic backdrops of cliffs, sea and sky in the world was sculpted by a volcanic eruption during the Bronze Age. The explosion caused the middle of this once circular island to sink, leaving an enormous sea-filled crater flanked by mammoth cliffs. This cataclysmic event is the reason for many of the island’s remarkable features, from it’s black sand beaches to exquisite wines grown from the fertile volcanic soil.
The town of Fira, located on the islands west end, is perched on the edge of sheer 260m cliffs. Wonderful views combine with quant streets filled with souvenir shops, jewellers and fine restaurants. To truly appreciate this cliff-clinging spot, descend by cable car to the port of Athinio below. If your truly daring, zigzag down the face of the cliff on a donkey. Rhodes Rhodes is said to be the sunniest place in Europe, with an average of 300 days of sunshine a year. Inhabited since prehistoric times, the island has a rich history spanning millennia. The old Town’s character is greatly influenced by Italian architecture and this wellpreserved society still maintains its charm of a medieval town with Venetian and Turkish influences. This ancient harbour is where the famous Colossus of Rhodes, one of the seven wonders of the ancient world, once stood. There are also ruins of the ancient acropolis and the Temple of Apollo.

living history in the streets of Corfu’s old town and take in the old and new fortress, or citadels, surrounded by delightful gardens. Narrow winding streets, wander past quant village squares, and richly decorated churches and homes. Empress Elizabeth of Austria built the Palace of Achilleion. Adorned with statues and motifs associated with Achilles, the palace features a dramatic statue, the Dying Achilles, by German sculpture Herter. The Palace grounds feature lush and tropical terraced gardens with sweeping views of Corfu Town and the countryside.

GARDENING WATER WATER EVERYWHERE For smaller spaces or patios you’re best off with a self-contained and perhaps wall-mounted feature. There are lots of great self-contained water features available such as terracotta or glazed pot stacks with the water continuously circulated from one container to another by a hidden pump, so you would only need to top it up in the hottest weather to compensate for the effects of evaporation.
A water feature adds a truly magical dimension to any garden, large or small. The sound of tinkling water and the movement of light on its surface both works wonders, even on a less than perfect plot, and can be just the finishing touch you need for a patio or back yard or for a much larger garden. A visit to your local garden centre or specialist aquatics centre, or a browse online, will reveal a plentiful choice of water features of all shapes, styles, and sizes; but before you commit yourself, just what are the main points to bear in mind? First, position. If you want moving water, your choice of feature will almost certainly need an electric pump, so there has to be a power-point nearby - an obvious point perhaps, but one that people do sometimes overlook. Do you want an eye-catching centrepiece for a formal garden, or just the music of running water as the soundtrack to your barbecues or alfresco Sunday lunch? In either case, you need to carefully consider the appropriate position. Any water feature from pond to delicate fountain can turn bright green in summer due to the build-up of floating algae. You can go a long way towards preventing this pea-soup effect by positioning the feature away from the hottest direct sunlight. Make sure it’s well away from overhanging deciduous trees, too, as falling leaves are likely to clog everything up.
Spouts and fountains are great fun in a garden. A spitting fish, frog, or gargoyle can add a touch of art or humour while its water-jet will oxygenate a pool, reducing algae and keeping the pond-life happy. If you want moving water and the reflections it provides but perhaps have toddlers, a stone-effect millstone with a low centrally-positioned jet spreading ripples of water across its surface is both beautiful and safe. Plants are integral to any pool or pond. Surface-floating plants such as waterlilies not only look gorgeous but their large, near-circular, leaves also shade the water’s surface again, reducing any problems you might have with algae. Waterlilies need still water, though, so they are best avoided if you have a fountain; but a single spitting feature at one end of the pool shouldn’t create too much turbulence for them. Make sure you plant them at the correct depth if you want them to flourish. Plants grown around the edges of pools and ponds are called marginals and do best in shallower water or boggy ground. Use plenty of them: they look gorgeous; they hide unsightly edges and signs of the liner; and they are a haven for wildlife. For a more formal look you’ll want fewer marginals, but some shapely rushes or ferns or some yellow or purple bog-iris will add extra impact.

Water-features attract wildlife, and on summer days you may well be visited by beautiful, colourful dragonflies or mayflies. If there’s any depth of water then many birds may also come to drink and bathe. And remember, even a small pond needs a safe exit-route in case wildlife such as hedgehogs pop by for a drink and inadvertently tumble in. A shallow beach of pebbles at one end should do the trick.
ice. Floating an old football on the surface helps, or you could melt a hole in the ice using the bottom of a pan of very hot water (but don’t pour the water in), repeating when the surface re-freezes. Visit Pippa’s website www.pippagreenwood.com for ‘Grow Your Own with Pippa Greenwood’ for the AskPippa Q&A service, Nemaslug, natural pest controls and lots more besides!
If your feature has a sizeable surface, it’s well worth netting it in the autumn to catch falling leaves. Simple garden netting stretched taut over the surface is ideal. Remove it as necessary, tip off the leaves, and replace it until the worst of the leaf-fall is over. If leaves are allowed to accumulate in the water they’ll not only clog the pumps and reduce the depth of the water, but as they rot down they’ll produce methane gas which is toxic to pond life. In winter, try to stop the water feature from freezing up. If the weather forecast predicts extremely cold temperatures, smaller features are best emptied out completely and the pump cleaned up and stored in the shed. Ponds with fish need to have an ice-free area maintained on the surface or the fish may be killed by toxic gasses such as methane building up under the

CINEMA WE ARE THE BEST The joys of youth are laid bare this month in a brand new movie from acclaimed Swedish writer-director Lukas Moodysson. This is the filmmaker whose previous work includes beloved films such as Show Me Love and Together, two revered and treasured indiecomic works that each possess a tangible vibrancy and energy. But, over the last ten years or so, he has delivered a string of decidedly odd, often confusing films which had certain corners of the cinematic press pondering on whether it was time to call time on the Scandinavian artiste. Here's proof that we were right to stick with him. We Are The Best! is a bona fide celebration of adolescence. Forsaking a focus on the innocence of fresh-faced school kids in favour of the microcosm of society we commonly refer to as school, and all the cliques, trends, expectations and pressures that come with it, sincerity abounds as we watch our three girls with cropped hair and a penchant for counterculture - go about their teenage business. Which here centres on music. The year is 1982. Bobo (Mira Barkhammer) and Klara (Mira Grosin) are aged 13, confident and best friends forever (although that cringe-inducing phrase hadn't made it into the common consciousness yet). United by a love of punk, which at the time had fallen out of favour
in almost all regions of the world, the pair begin taking tentative steps towards starting up a band, and penning their own three-chord anthems. First, though, they need to find a decent guitarist to strum those riffs, which they get in Hedvig (Liv LeMoyne) There's a problem, though. Aside from the fact that all their classmates poke fun at their musical tastes, the

third party in the trio isn't really cut out for a life spent sticking two fingers to the man and generally challenging conservative views. A blonde, god-fearing lass, whilst stopping short of a bubblegum pop princess collaborating with The Sex Pistols, you can probably imagine the kind of obstacles that need to be overcome. Nevertheless, persevere they do, making for an opening half to the film that's heart-warming, amusing and amongst the best highschool comedies to come out of recent years In contrast Act II, as it were, is a little less easy on the eyes and decidedly darker. Here Moodysson struggles a little, although by now we are already hooked. The arrival of male distractions, which threaten to tear the trio apart, creates an obstacle that must be overcome. Nevertheless, We Are The Best! remains a tale that's not necessarily an original offering (sharing, as it does, so many similarities with other adolescent sagas set in and around academe), but a wholly enjoyable one, and well worthy of attention. Now in cinemas, it should go without saying that we consider ourselves fully-fledged fans.

Fill in the grid so that every row, every column, and every 3 x 3 box contains the digits 1 through 9. That’s all there is too it. There’s no math involved. The grid has numbers, but nothing has to add up to anything else. You solve the puzzle with reasoning and logic. It’s fun. It’s challenging. It’s addictive! Solving time is typically 10 to 30 minutes, depending on your skill and experience.

INTERIORS A HOTEL BATHROOM AT HOME The best hotel bathrooms are blissful escapes from humdrum reality. Superbly planned to make the most of what is often not the hugest of spaces, they offer sleek efficiency at the same time as indulgence and opulence, from cosy-toes underfloor heating to tactile taps, monsoon showerheads to gleaming glass. And that’s not even to mention the most flattering of lighting schemes, the deepest of deep-fill baths and the fluffiest of fluffy towels. All this and more is why we find it so pleasurable to stay in a hotel that’s got its bathrooms right. And if you hanker for this feeling all the time, there’s no reason why you shouldn’t recreate the same sort of haven in which to relax and refresh at home. Simply take some of the essential elements that we have outlined below, and your boring room can be transformed into a true bathing beauty. Planning A well-designed bathroom feels comfortable and convenient no matter how large or small. If you are rethinking your entire room, decide on basic layout issues at the start. Should the WC be in a separate room, for example? Do you need to knock down or add partition walls? Or would you like a walk-in shower, underfloor heating or perhaps a pair of his ‘n’ hers basins? Avoid moving existing plumbing, if possible, as it will save money and effort. However, if the floorplan of your current bathroom really isn’t working for you, this one-off plumbing cost could be worth it in the long run. Flooring Bathroom floors must be non-slip, easy to clean and comfortable underfoot; most importantly, though, they mustn’t mind getting wet. While the upmarket hotel bathroom uses expensive stone or marble tiles, lookalikes made from ceramic or porcelain are a cheaper option. Vinyl flooring also much less expensive comes in a vast range of colours and patterns, some of which replicate natural materials such as ceramic, stone or wood. If you want to go green, think bamboo which looks similar to timber, but loves humidity; natural rubber - available in gorgeous textures and colours; cork - which now comes in a range of fashionable shades; and linoleum - made from renewable resources. On a tight budget, simply sand timber
floorboards and repaint them with glossy, off-white floor paint for a fresh, clean look. Storage Great storage is just as important in a bathroom as any other room in the house; sometimes even more so. Where are you going to keep towels, toilet rolls, bottles of cleaning fluids, razors and a whole host of other (mostly unsightly) things? Fitted storage, either from a bathroom supplier or made for you by a joiner is ideal if you can afford it (though of course you can’t take it with you if you plan to move house). Alternatively, there are plenty of less expensive options. A wooden chest or blanket box, for example, could double as both a seat and towel store, while a wall-mounted shelf could be the perfect place to stack lotions and potions. In a large bathroom, a chest of drawers keeps all your bits and bobs in one place, while in a small room a metal rack on wheels combines both function and style.

Lighting Give your bathroom a boost with a new lighting scheme. Always use fittings designed for wet and steamy conditions, and combine task lights (for shaving and putting on make-up) with general background light. Downlights set into the ceiling are a great start, or else ceiling tracks with directional spotlights, which are inexpensive to fit. If you’re renovating the whole bathroom, it may be possible to install two lighting circuits: one for working lights and the other, on a dimmer switch, for soothing, ambient lights. Alternatively, set the mood for a long, relaxing bath with the warm glow of candlelight.
definitely not least - consider buying a new set of coordinating towels. The fluffier the better and, of course, in clean, bright hotel-white. . .
Accessories and extras Quick fixes for tired bathrooms include changing a dated pair of taps for some good-looking, modern ones, installing a glass shower screen to replace a flappy old curtain or jazzing up your windows with some decorative window film. Add a large mirror, it’s not only useful but also helps to increase the feeling of light and space in the room, and can become a focal point. Small storage items, such as wicker baskets, pretty ceramics or bright plastic tubs, bring texture, colour and interest. Last - but

BEAUTY AGE PROOF YOUR HAIR You’re probably all too aware that you need to look after your skin if you want to stay looking younger for longer but have you ever thought that you might need to age-proof your hair as well? Hair, like skin, suffers two types of ageing: extrinsic and intrinsic. Extrinsic ageing is the effect of everything that your locks are exposed to, like heatstyling, sun damage, and colouring. Intrinsic ageing comes from below the scalp and reveals the signs that your hair is past its prime: reduction in melanin, decline in sebum production, and a change in hair diameter. What that means is that greys start to appear, the shine starts to disappear, and your hair loses its bounce. Hair growth also begins to slow over the years, so it’s harder to achieve the length you loved when you were younger. Ageing is a natural process, but there’s plenty you can do to slow it down. Always Be Aware of Your Hair Try to limit extrinsic damage. Lay off the heated styling tools; prevent your hair from being frazzled by the sun by applying a deep conditioner to the lengths and ends when you’re on the beach; and cut right back on
products that can dry your hair, like hairsprays. Reconsider Your Colour Although you might colour your hair to hide greys, choosing the wrong hue can be very ageing. An allover colour can be hard to wear as you get older. Instead of opting for a block shade, choose a base colour that’s no more than two shades lighter or darker than your natural hue, and add highlights. Not only will your hair look younger, your face will too. Condition, Condition, Condition Smother the lengths and ends of your hair with a rich deep-conditioning treatment once or twice a week. Try hair oils and products that are specially formulated for ageing, thinning, or dried-out hair. Try a New Hairstyle It’s easy to get stuck in a rut, but out-of-date, unflattering styles really do make you look a lot older than you are. That’s why it’s important to take a fresh look at yourself every so often. Talk to your stylist, or try a new salon. The opinion of someone who doesn’t already know you and your hair can result in a fantastic new look.

Any hairdresser worth their salt can advise on what styles work best for thinning or ageing hair, but generally it’s worth considering the following:
Julie C Fell
Mobile Personal Stylist
Length: Long locks look lovely if they’re bouncy, thick, and full of life, but if that’s not the case then they really aren’t worth holding on to. Chopping long hair into a flattering, blunt, midi-cut is a quick way to create more youthful-looking hair. Ridding your tresses of dead splitends improves condition, and a blunt cutting technique will create the look of fullness.
FULLY TRAINED BY RITA RUSK INTERNATIONAL
Frame Your Face: Try a fringe, or have some soft layers added to the styling around your face. This lifts your features and makes you look younger. A Professional Opinion is Best Although it’s normal for your hair to show signs of change such as thinning over the years, it’s worth seeing your GP if you notice any sudden changes. Hair loss can be caused by hormone deficiencies, low thyroid levels, for example a deficiency in nutrients, stress, and the side-effects of various medications. So if you’re in doubt, ask your doctor’s advice

FINANCE CREDIT WHERE CREDIT IS DUE -The chances of identity theft are reduced. -Control of finances is significantly improved. For those looking to buy their own property, a good credit rating can quite literally hold the key to the door. Are repairs to your credit file necessary or even possible? Lots of options exist to boost your credit rating, and taking several small actions adds up to a big improvement over time. If you’ve ever been refused credit, you’ll already know how demoralising it is to be held back in life. Being unable to buy your first house or a new car is bad enough but poor scores don't just hurt your ability to borrow money. You’ll need a credit card to hire a car and your score will be checked before you can take out a mobile phone agreement. A poor rating can even make insurance premiums more expensive. However, there are steps you can take to improve the situation, and they all start with checking your credit file. Credit reports contain details such as past and current borrowing, late or missed payments, County Court Judgements and bankruptcy information. How to access your credit file Three main credit reference agencies exist in the UK Equifax, Experian and CallCredit. Equifax and Experian offer a 30-day free trial (but be aware you will be charged if you don’t cancel within 30 days) or just £2 for a statutory report. CallCredit provide free access for life. It’s advisable to obtain credit reports from all three agencies to get a complete picture of your situation. Why you should make the effort to check your credit report It pays to check your credit file at least once a year for a number of reasons: -Lenders can make mistakes which you may be able to rectify. -An overall view of historic and current borrowing is provided.
It’s important to remember that having no credit file at all can also hold you back. Young people just starting work are often penalised because they can’t demonstrate their ability to make regular repayments on time, and find themselves in a ‘Catch22’ situation. Below are some easily implemented short-term fixes, whether you have a credit history or are brand new borrowers: -Cancel all unused credit cards by writing to the provider and cutting up the card. -Make sure you are on the electoral register - this action alone has a significant effect on your ability to obtain credit, as lenders can identify you and reduce the chances of fraud. -Stop applying for credit for a while, or space out your applications. -Ensure that a landline phone number is included in your file, rather than just a mobile number. -Check that all information is indeed correct, including any late repayments and outstanding loan amounts mentioned. -‘Unlink’ yourself from a former partner if they have a poor credit rating it also affects yours. Long-term plans for a good credit rating Long-term plans largely depend on whether or not you have borrowed before. For those with no existing credit rating, the only way to demonstrate financial responsibility may be to apply for a high interest credit card with a low limit.

High interest, low limit credit card Cards such as these are known as ‘credit-builder’ cards, and as long as you make payments on time for a minimum of six months, they allow you to build a good credit file. Don’t forget to stay within your credit limit or this will automatically trigger alerts with the card provider, damaging your credit rating The interest rates on these cards can be eye-watering though, with APRs of up to 39.9% not unusual, but if it’s only used for small purchases and then paid off in full, you won’t be affected. Credit-builder’ prepaid cards This type of card involves signing an agreement for a small loan typically around £60 which is then repaid at £5 per month. Twelve loan repayments successfully made on time are then recorded on your file. Similarly, if you have a mobile phone contract, no payment defaults will lead to a good credit score over time. Being aware of how your actions influence future decisions by lenders is the first step towards developing a positive credit rating.

An existing credit score can be improved by understanding which criteria are important to lending institutions. Lending criteria A long employment history, living in one place for a long time as a homeowner, and a significant period with the same bank, all contribute towards a positive credit report. Payment defaults of more than three consecutive months can be a problem. If you can pay off some or all of the arrears, however, the lender may agree to remove the default notice, although this isn’t guaranteed. The cost of not keeping an eye on your credit file is high. At best it is a temporary inconvenience. At worst it affects your ability to invest in property, which has a knock-on effect for the rest of your life.
Your credit score is set on how you use credit. If you don't use credit at all, you may have a poor score even if you are in a well-paid job and have savings.

MOTORS 2014 MITSUBISHI ASX
Crossovers are fast becoming the default car choice of the masses. Consumers love their commanding driving position and pumped-up looks while it seems manufacturers can’t stop releasing new versions. Pretty much all the mainstream makers now have an SUV in their range and that has led to the marketplace becoming rather overcrowded. That boom in choice for buyers has also meant those manufacturers that arrived early to the crossover party have been forced to up their games and release refreshed models. Skoda has recently renosed its Yeti, Nissan has worked its magic on the built-in-Britain Qashqai and now it’s Mitsubishi’s turn with its ASX. When it first appeared in 2010, the ASX was one of the more niche models in the segment, but even then it managed to chalk up 8,000 sales in its first year. However, that success was short lived: a devastatingly high Yen put up the price of imports and buyers fled to rivals. A year later sales had dropped to just 3,000. But Mitsubishi is bouncing back. The exchange rate has moved back in the maker’s favour, prices have dropped and the ASX has had a makeover. Mitsubishi has slashed prices of the ASX by an average of 10 per cent and for 2014 it’s been treated to a nip and tuck with plush interior fittings, new suspension tweaks
and a panoramic glass roof with LED mood lighting on the top-of-the-range models. There’s a new engine too. Joining the 1.6-litre petrol and 1.8-litre diesel is a 2.2-litre diesel unit poached from the larger Outlander off-roader. By not offering a larger capacity diesel engine in the ASX range at the start, Mitsubishi thinks it missed out on nearly 20 per cent of the market, so this new lump will come as a welcome addition. The larger diesel develops 148bhp and 380Nm of torque. Naturally that means more power and shove, but thankfully not at the cost of fuel economy. At 48.7mpg on the combined cycle, the ASX4 2.2 diesel is more economical than a number of rivals’ 2.0-litre diesel offerings, including the sector’s all-conquering Nissan Qashqai. There’s also a new automatic gearbox thrown into the mix. That self-shifter has also been borrowed from the Outlander and with six ratios and paddles behind the steering wheel, it’s a smooth and precise set-up. Some models get a switchable four-wheel drive system. One press of a button on the centre console sends 30 per cent of the car’s power to the rear wheels, while a second prod locks the centre diff and splits power 50/50 front and rear.

The ASX’s small dimensions always meant it was good to drive, but road noise was a bit of a let it down. These new 2014 models come with improved sound deadening, which has helped a little, and the bouncy ride of previous ASXs has disappeared thanks to retuned suspension. That’s not to say it’s a perfect driving experience though. The steering still lacks crispness, there’s a fair degree of body roll and the ASX is sadly just not as refined or as comfortable as a Kia Sportage or Skoda Yeti.

There are some more up-market plastics, “piano black” materials now adorn the dashboard and the top spec ASX4 gets that aforementioned panoramic glass roof, which makes the cabin wonderfully light and airy. But despite Mitsubishi’s efforts, compared to rivals, the interior still lacks a certain sparkle.

That said, with revised pricing, unique styling and an enviable reputation for reliability, the ASX certainly deserves a second look if you’re in the market for a crossover and if the sales figures are anything to go by, there’s a high chance that’s most of you. HEALTH SLEEP: YOU CAN DO IT WITH YOUR EYES SHUT Sleep is supposedly an involuntary process. So we take it for granted when we can sleep, and often just accept it when we can’t. But we shouldn’t. Research has proved that sleep is just as influential on our health as diet and exercise. Lack of sleep affects our memory, mood, concentration and reaction times (increasing accident risk), and long-term it can affect our language processing, planning abilities and sense of time. Some medical sleep disorders can contribute to serious health problems such as diabetes and heart disease. So what stops us getting the sleep we need, and how can we improve the quantity and quality of our sleep? Our sleep has recurring cycles around 100 minutes long, starting with Non-REM sleep. Non-REM (nonrapid eye movement) sleep progresses from Stage One (light sleep), through Stage Two and Three (when heart rate and breathing slows) to Stage Four; then we’re in a deep sleep, and feel disoriented if we’re awakened. This is when bed-wetting, night terrors, or sleepwalking occur. REM (rapid eye movement) sleep - our dream time follows around 80 minutes after we fall asleep. Our brain is very active, and breathing and blood pressure rise. Our eyes move, but we can’t move our bodies. When this stage ends, the cycle restarts. Sweet Dreams aren’t made of this Common enemies of good sleep include pain; a frequent need to urinate; stress or depression; the menstrual cycle (due to hormonal changes that affect temperature control and melatonin production); the menopause and snoring (caused by muscles at the back of the tongue relaxing). There are also sleep disorders - these merit an article to themselves but include night terrors, sleep walking, sleep talking, sleep paralysis, teeth grinding, restless limb syndrome and sleep apnoea (a serious condition; sufferers stop breathing or breathe shallowly for minutes at a time, starving the brain of oxygen).
To help you sleep soundly: Eliminate Physical Factors Cure snoring using nasal strips or sprays; sometimes minor surgery may be necessary. See your doctor about any physical problems, mental health issues or sleep disorders that are disturbing you. Sometimes they may recommend Cognitive Behaviour Therapy or sleeping tablets. PMS (Pre-Menstrual Syndrome) treatments may help women who sleep badly before a period, even if they don’t suffer other PMS symptoms. Calcium deficiency can make PMS worse, so the next tip is useful: Drink Warm Milk Milk contains tryptophan, a raw material for the sleep hormone melatonin, but only in tiny amounts which probably don’t cross the blood brain barrier; this can be overcome, some evidence suggests, by eating a carbohydrate-rich snack just beforehand. Milk may help by making you feel warm and full too. Don’t Go to Bed Hungry Large meals late at night may impair sleep, but hunger can keep you awake, so have a light, easily-digestible snack if you’re hungry at bedtime. Avoid Alcohol and Caffeine in the Evening, and Stop Smoking. Caffeine is a stimulant which may keep you awake, while alcohol, although famous for making us sleepy, impairs our sleep quality and may make us need the loo more often. Nicotine affects both the length and quality of our sleep.

Get enough Sunlight and Exercise Light levels and activity have a profound effect on the hormones that regulate our body clock and mood, so try to get outside every day, get regular exercise, and on dull days, try to spend time near a window. Dim the lights However, bright light before bedtime will suppress melatonin secretion, so dim the lights. Either avoid TVs, laptops, tablets and smart phones within two hours of bedtime, or turn down their brightness settings (some screens have a night mode). Establish a Routine Try to establish a relaxing routine before bed; make sure your bedtime reading isn’t too emotionally charged or terrifying (or so compulsive that you keep reading ‘just one more chapter’), and don’t watch TV in the bedroom before sleeping. Make your Bedroom a Haven Try to avoid using your bedroom as a work space - or the dump space for everything homeless. Barbara Hemphill famously said ‘Clutter is delayed decisions’; don’t surround yourself with items that will nag you to be

cleared up. Ensure your bedroom is well ventilated and not too hot or cold for comfort, and keep it dark - fit a blackout blind, line curtains, or wear an eye mask. If you have noisy fellow occupants or neighbours, earplugs could be useful. A comfy mattress is also vital, so ensure you try before you buy. Declutter your Brain. Worried you’ll forget something important for tomorrow? Download your brain by jotting them down on paper or typing them into a Smartphone/PC to-do list. This can be therapeutic for worries as well, particularly if you can write a possible positive action beside them. Have A Warm (Not Hot) Bath Before Bed Try some relaxing bath oils, too. Try not to worry about it. It’s easier said than done, but try not to let a lack of sleep become a worry, or it could start a vicious circle. If you can’t sleep, leave the bedroom and do something absorbing but calm: read a magazine or do a jigsaw until you feel sleepy.

TECH GUIDE PET PROJECTS
Pet owners are famously free with their cash: nothing’s too expensive for a beloved dog, cat, budgie or Vietnamese pot-bellied pig. It’s taken a while for the technology industry to notice, but now they have and there are all kinds of high-tech gizmos for your furry or feathered friends. Forget automatic pet flaps and antibark collars: the new wave of pet tech includes health monitors, cameras and even exercisers.
Another way to get an insight into your pet’s life is to shell out for an Eyenimal camera. The Petcam is available for cats and dogs, attaches to your pet’s collar and records whatever he or she sees; you can then transfer the footage to your computer. Expect to pay around £60. Some pet gadgets appear to be practical jokes, but the GoDogGo is perfectly serious: its Automatic Ball Thrower is a £99 gadget based on the automated tennis ball machines that tennis players use in training. The GoDogGo will happily hurl tennis balls 5 to 10 metres, exercising your dog while you sit back and relax.
The star of this year’s Consumer Electronics Show - or its pet division at least - was Voyce, which is essentially a fitness tracker for dogs. It isn’t cheap - it’s around £200 for the collar and another £10 per month - but the pitch is that by monitoring your dog’s activity, breathing, heart rate and calories it’ll give you early warning of any potentially dangerous and expensive health problems. Voyce will go on sale later this year, and it’s entering a market that’s already looking a bit crowded: in addition to Voyce there are pet fitness trackers including Fitbark (around £60) and Whistle (also around £60).
Have you ever wished you could take your pet bird for a walk? The people behind the Feather Tether hope you have, because their £12.99 bird harness means your bird can go wherever you are without fear of injury or “the tragedy of fly-aways”. The harness comes in five sizes and a range of colours.
If you think that’s a bit odd, wait until you hear No More Woof: the £50 No More Woof gadget promises to convert doggy brainwaves into human speech. Don’t expect to engage in scintillating conversation with your Shih-Tzu, though: the repertoire is currently limited to “I’m hungry”, “I’m tired”, and “who are you?” The developers say that No More Woof is a work in progress, though, and early sales of the device will enable them to make it smarter, more useful and - we hope - more comfortable. We can’t imagine our own dog putting up with a No More Woof headset for more than a few seconds.
If you can’t always be with your pet, Petcube might be the answer: it’s a smartphone-powered gadget which contains a wide-angle camera and microphone for streaming high definition video and audio to your iPhone or iPad. There are speakers and a low-intensity laser pointer to transmit your voice and amuse your cat respectively. It’ll cost around £160 when it goes on sale in May. If you don’t have a pet, the iPhone/iPad app also enables you to log into other people’s public Petcubes (with their permission) and annoy their pets instead and if it’s just the laser pet toy you want, the Frolicat Bolt automatic laser toy is currently £20.01 on Amazon.

- Feel great and alleviate back pain these conditions, whilst strengthening the core muscles around the spine, pelvic and shoulder girdles. The sessions also develop breathing control, coordination and stability of the body, changing muscle lengths, relaxing and re-balancing the body.” No matter what age, sex, size or shape Pilates classes can build up core strength, helping to avoid or recover from injury, improve posture, balance and gain a greater mind and body awareness. SC Pilates classes are performed in a group environment with class sizes kept small to ensure participants receive the attention they require. One to one sessions can also be arranged by appointment.
SC Pilates, founded in 2013 by Silvia Catani, offers Pilates classes in Bishopbriggs, Lenzie, Bearsden and Milngavie. This simple, yet effective exercise method can help participants develop a healthy self-image, through the development of better posture, proper coordination, breathing and improved flexibility. As a direct result of their weekly practice, Silvia's clients often experience improvements in confidence, selfesteem and self-awareness resulting in a new zest for life. Silvia Catani, owner of SC Pilates, said “Having been recommended to try Pilates to overcome back pain in 2008, I quickly fell in love with the health and wellbeing benefits experienced as a result of my weekly practice. I was so passionate about how Pilates had helped me, I wanted to share this with others, which prompted me to embark upon my studies as a Pilates instructor and subsequently change career to allow me to teach others this highly rewarding exercise method.” Karen from Milngavie commented: “Silvia's classes are enjoyable and relaxing. She explains everything brilliantly and ensures that everyone has the correct positioning which is so important with Pilates. My back problems are improving and I am so much more aware of my posture and stance, in general - Silvia has helped me to correct bad habits I have had for years!“ Silvia commented “High fitness levels or great suppleness are not a necessary prerequisite for Pilates. In fact, my Pilates classes enhance both of

BOOKS IT’S EASY BEING GREEN
April signalled Earth Day - with so many great books around to help us be more environmentally aware, it’s just a matter of making some simple changes, and finding the right books to help us along the way.
The Green Book by Elizabeth Rogers and Thomas M. Kostigen This book is packed with information about small efforts that can make a big difference. It has thought-provoking facts and figures for when you’re standing there cleaning your teeth with the tap running. There are celebrity hints and tips including pearls of wisdom from Robert Redford, Jennifer Aniston and Justin Timberlake to name but a few.
Last Chance to See… by Douglas Adams and Mark Carwardine Bestselling author of The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, Douglas Adams has teamed up with zoologist Mark Carwardine for a round the world voyage in search of some of the planet’s most critically endangered species. On their journey they encounter some bizarre and astounding creatures that are perilously close to being wiped out altogether. Adams’ reactions are often those of someone coming face to face with an alien species.
An Inconvenient Truth: The Planetary Emergency of Global Warming and What We Can Do About It by Al Gore Former Vice President of the United States, Gore is an articulate and prolific ‘green’ campaigner who has long been on a mission to raise awareness of global warming. Gore writes in a succinct, passionate and compelling way about the need to halt climate change and react now, rather than thinking it’s something that’s happening at a glacial pace. He brings urgency and momentum to the debates, insisting that governments need to stop ignoring this most inconvenient of truths: that our planet is heating-up and we have a critical situation on our hands.
How Bad Are Bananas? : The Carbon Footprint of Everything by Mike Bernau-Lee We talk about our giant, trampling, carbon footprints, but exactly how bad is it to take a transatlantic flight, or use a plastic carrier bag, or buy bananas? This book takes us, step by step through around 100 everyday items and occurrences to show the impact our daily existence is having on the planet. It’s an entertaining, though sometimes disturbing read.

What is Myofascial Release? Myofascial Release (from myo, muscle, and fascia, band) is a unique approach to manual therapy pioneered by US physiotherapist John Barnes. At its simplest, MFR involves gentle stretching of tight, painful areas in the client's body using slow, sustained pressure or subtle traction. At its most profound, it reaches deep beneath these superficial restrictions to unwind the body's unconscious holding patterns which, though we may not know it, are often the root cause of our dis-ease. Fascia forms a continuous 3D web throughout the body, providing a framework of support for the skeleton, muscles, organs, nerves and blood vessels. Without fascia to hold us up we would collapse in a heap. A healthy fascial system is relaxed and resilient, acting as our body's shock absorber. After injury, however and injury can be both physical and emotional - our fascia begins to tighten and harden in the areas affected. Over time, as the body tries to compensate for these restrictions, it creates further imbalance and tension at sites ever more distant from that of the original trauma. Thus a problem which originated in the

knee/hip could eventually cause pain in the shoulder/neck, and vice versa. Research suggests that the body remembers everything that happens to it and stores that information in the fascial tissue. These subconscious memories of past experience may be associated with postural positions, actions or emotions. The body/mind is also capable of creating habits and bracing patterns to protect us from physical and/or emotional pain and discomfort. While these holding patterns are essential short-term coping mechanisms they can persist into the longer term, resulting in a new set of problems for the body. MFR practitioners seek out underlying patterns of fascial restriction and follow them to source. We do not treat by numbers. No two clients are identical, even if they present with apparently identical problems. Find the pain, yes - but look elsewhere for the cause. For more information on how MFR can help promote health and wellbeing, contact Jane Meek, MFR practitioner, on 07759 182236.
