MUSIC NEW RELEASES
Elbow: The Take Off And Landing Of Everything Elbow 's new album is largely inspired by Brooklyn, in New York. The group's follow-up to ‘Build a Rocket Boys!’ is apparently as much about the trendiest borough in New York as it is about Manchester, the band's hometown. Garvey explained the title for the album. "It's to do with the fact that there have been so many life events. There are five members of the band – people have split up, got together, had children. It never stops, this stuff. Especially round the 40 mark... Everybody's feeling relief, with remorse, next to joy, next to loss." Accordingly, the title track was inspired by Primal Scream and Spiritualized. Can we still rely on the bearded kings of Greater Manchester to deliver in 2014? Thankfully the new tracks on this album are proof that Elbow are still providing music that's reassuringly tender and fabulous!
Bombay Bicycle Club: So Long, See You Tomorrow The bands fourth album was produced by Jack Steadman in the band's studio in London. The band members have never wasted much time; when they formed the band at school in north London in 2006, they won a competition to play at that year’s V festival, released two EPs the next year and wrote their debut album, ‘I Had the Blues But I Shook Them Loose’, while still at school. It came out in 2009 and went gold! In this album, there was always a purpose from the beginning to bring everything together, to tell a story from the first track through to the finale with everything interconnecting as a complete body of work. This is an album that is almost impossible to categorise and without doubt a defining record for a band that are not even halfway through their twenties.
Maximo Park: Too Much Information The band have just released their fifth album which is the follow up to 2012’s critically acclaimed ‘The National Health’, and sees the band reach new heights in their remarkable songwriting and sonic experimentation. 'Too Much Information' sees the band keen to challenge the listener with some of their most adventurous musical and lyrical work to date. The band's frontman Paul Smith said in a statement: "Our lyrics and our music will never be too-cool-forschool - we are an emotional band even if it might be too much information for some..”

WEDDINGS CHOOSING THE RIGHT VENUE
Well you’ve popped the question and are excited about your big day but with so much to think about, where do you start? Rest assured, everything will fall into place when you book the right wedding venue. The key element is communication between you. Establish what you are looking for and be prepared to compromise if you have different ideas as this will help fall outs later! Be realistic and set yourself a budget as it may run away with you. Firstly, when to get married and how many guests you anticipate will attend. If you have a date in mind and an idea of the number of guests, ask these questions when you first telephone a venue to check they have availability and are able to accommodate your wedding celebrations. Make an appointment to view the venue, enjoy the show round and talk about your wedding....You’ll be surprised how many people get a feel that a certain venue is right for them straight away, whether it be their first visit or whether they have been before. Are you looking for a church wedding or a civil ceremony in a hotel? Many venues now have civil ceremony licences and the beauty of holding your whole day from ceremony to evening function at the same venue is the convenience for yourself and your guests. You don’t have to think about the prospect of guests getting lost travelling to another venue! Hotels are ideal for your guests who don’t live within the
local area, as often you can negotiate a special rate for your guests staying over, or the venue may already have a special room rate available for your guests. If you are flexible about the day of the week, month, season, or even the year of your wedding, you'll have a wider choice of venues as many have various offers throughout the year. When working with your budget, bear in mind the cost of such things as the hire of chair covers, sashes, table runners, table decorations etc. Those costs may mount up, although they may be offered within certain packages at your preferred venue, so it’s always worth asking the question! Remember, your venue sets the tone for your wedding. It’s the first thing your guests see when they arrive and it’s what they’re going to be immersed in for the hours they are celebrating with you. Your wedding co-ordinator should be willing and able to answer your queries, as insignificant you feel they may be. You need to feel you will be looked after - it’s YOUR big day and a venue who really want to host your wedding will make you feel welcome, and that nothing is too much trouble. You need to feel assured all the little details will fall into place and your day will run smoothly, so you have something to look back on with a smile and some wonderful memories. It is your day, your very special day, so you should be reassured you can relax with the knowledge that everything will be amazing and your guests will enjoy celebrating with you!

TRAVEL THEME PARKS
Theme parks are a mainstay of the family holiday options, especially in the summer. Something about amusement parks makes kids believe they are characters in their own favourite cartoons or on the set of an adventure movie exercising their right to one thrilling experience after the other. Adults, we all know, are not much different. While we’re happy to claim to be at these hubs of boundless enjoyment purely for the sake of the kids, we secretly (and sometimes not so secretly) enjoy the experience. If you have already visited a theme park with children you may have already experienced the transformation from strict and orderly parent to 21st century Peter Pan for a few weeks in these modern day Neverlands. There are many theme parks to choose from in the UK (such as Thorpe Park, Alton Towers, Legoland and Chessington World Adventures). Europe offers many more options, from the oldest theme park in Europe at the Tivoli Gardens (Copenhagen, Denmark) to the home of the biggest rollercoaster at Europa-Park (Rust,
Germany). However, no theme park evokes as much excitement in children, or entices as many visits, as Disneyland in Paris, France. Over 12 million people visit the park annually, dwarfing second place EuropaPark’s 4 million annual visitors. Opened in 1992 in Marne-la-Vallee in the eastern suburbs of Paris, France, Disneyland Paris is one of France’s and Europe’s most visited tourist attractions. Its unique appeal to families stems from the longevity of the brand and its characters. It is one of very few childhood crazes that can be said to be shared by the children of today, their parents and grandparents. Perhaps only sports share this privileged status. With a combination of theme parks (Disneyland Park and Walt Disney Studios Park), retail, dining, entertainment hubs, golf courses and seven hotels there is lots for every member of the family to enjoy, both on their own and together as a family. Impressive, but you would not expect anything less from an attraction that is one fifth the size of Paris.

The icing on the cake is that Paris - a cultural centre and one of Europe’s top tourist destinations is only a few minutes away and can easily be added into the mix of your holiday plans. While the city may suit parents more than children, the whole family can enjoy the fruits of cooking classes that are becoming increasingly popular weekend holiday excuses in themselves. The Pompidou centre also offers a variety of weird and wonderful exhibitions, and several installations aimed directly at children and young adults.
home to 25 species of cats, plus Lemurs and Farm Animals. The cats are afforded a lot of space and the many tame and nondangerous species are allowed to walk freely so you can observe them in their natural behaviour. There are many Chateaux to enjoy, and the open spaces and beautiful gardens are well suited to kids with a lot of energy or walks with very young children pushchairs. The Chateau de Vaux-leVicomte in Maincy is perhaps the most beautiful of all, and every summer Saturday sees the exterior lit by 2,000 candles, while every 1st and 3rd Saturday of the month features a firework display.
Close by, outside of Paris, the Parc Des Felins in LumignyNesles-Ormeaux is a theme park with more genuine animal entertainment than Mickey & Minnie Mouse. This park is

SC Pilates, founded in 2013 by Silvia Catani, offers Pilates classes in Bishopbriggs, Lenzie, Bearsden and Milngavie. This simple, yet effective exercise method can help participants develop a healthy self-image, through the development of better posture, proper coordination, breathing and improved flexibility. As a direct result of their weekly practice, Silvia's clients often experience improvements in confidence, selfesteem and self-awareness resulting in a new zest for life. Silvia Catani, owner of SC Pilates, said “Having been recommended to try Pilates to overcome back pain in 2008, I quickly fell in love with the health and wellbeing benefits experienced as a result of my weekly practice. I was so passionate about how Pilates had helped me, I wanted to share this with others, which prompted me to embark upon my studies as a Pilates instructor and subsequently change career to allow me to teach others this highly rewarding exercise method.” Karen from Milngavie commented: “Silvia's classes are enjoyable and relaxing. She explains everything brilliantly and ensures that everyone has the correct positioning which is so important with Pilates. My back problems are improving and I am so much more aware of my posture and stance, in general - Silvia has helped me to correct bad habits I have had for years!“ Silvia commented “High fitness levels or great suppleness are not a necessary prerequisite for Pilates. In fact, my Pilates classes enhance both of

CINEMA HER
Britain is in the midst of a revolution. Don't get too excited, though, this is more a business than a cultural uprising. Once a nation of shopkeepers, the UK is fast becoming a country of freelancers. From web designers to personal assistants, quality surveyors to data analysts, more and more people are choosing to work for themselves, rather than sign up to a career with larger companies. In many ways, then, Spike Jonze's latest film epitomises our times, and not just because it centres on a potential nut-job who falls in love with the latest version of his computer operating system. Like any wordsmith, he spends far more time in the company of that flickering screen than any human companion, and soon - in typical Jonze style - the lines between fantasy (or perhaps hallucination) and reality gradually start to blur. Needless to say, we expect nothing else from the director in question. Soon he's besotted with the software, which (quite bizarrely) seems to respond with similar levels of affection. But surely man and machine (or rather desktop programme) can't find true love together. Or can they? We'll leave it to you to discover how the latest work from an enigmatic filmmaker, who specialises in creating worlds wherein anything can happen, pans out. Highly recommended, it's both genuinely unique and extremely relevant, at a time in history when microchips play an important part in our emotions. As such, we implore you to take a look.

INTERIORS 10 WAYS TO SAVE ON RENOVATING YOUR HOME Building work can be expensive, but if you’re canny you can keep costs down, says Katherine Sorrell 1. Use trade suppliers: they’re much cheaper than their highstreet equivalents. If you’re embarking on a major project, open an account with your local builders merchant, or else try specialists such as Screwfix or Plumbase. Feel intimidated about going into a branch? Do your research beforehand (so you know what you’re talking about), wear appropriate clothing and act confident. If you need to ask advice, though, do - these guys are the specialists and will probably be only too happy to help. 2. Borrow rather than buy expensive tools that you're unlikely to use very often. Ask friends making sure their tools have been well maintained or try a local hire shop. Before you start, though, make sure you know exactly how to use the tool safely. 3. Do as much work as you can yourself, and ask friends and family to help. You may be able to improve your DIY skills by studying a good manual, taking an evening class or even attending a specialist course. Only tackle jobs you can manage safely, however. Painting, decorating, tiling, sanding floorboards are all fine. But complex or tricky jobs should be left to the professionals, as should anything that involves electricity, gas or working at a height. 4. Try to design fitted furniture such as shelves or cupboards with the dimensions of standard materials in mind. This will allow you to either buy off the shelf or will save on cutting-waste, and therefore cost you less. 5. Grab the best bargains in sales and clearances,
and at factory outlets, seconds shops and discount warehouses. This may mean planning your decorating around a one-off sale, or waiting until you have acquired just the right discounted item, but your patience will pay off in the end. 6. How about second-hand? You never know what you might find if you scour the right places, from auctions and junk shops to small ads in your local paper and salvage yards. The golden rule is to be prepared - if you’re out and about, write out a list of relevant dimensions and keep it, together with a mini tape measure, on your person at all times. And be aware of safety: if you do buy second-hand radiators, taps or electrical items, have them fitted by someone who’s qualified to check that they’re totally safe and functioning correctly. 7. Something for nothing? Some people swear by the fine art of ‘skip dipping’ - and it’s true that many a desirable item, from floorboards to kitchen cupboards, has been re-homed in this way. If you’re going to try this, never trespass, and ask the owner’s permission first. Much easier, though, is to sign up to an internet-based network such as Freecycle, which connects people who are giving things away with people who will happily take them off their hands.

Don’t expect designer style, but you may be surprised at the range of useful things on offer, and you can even post a ‘wanted’ ad if you’re after something in particular. 8. Buy wallpaper and fabric from ends-of-line and discount suppliers. And avoid paying extra for special colours from expensive paint companies have your chosen colour mixed for you, in whatever finish you require. Johnstone’s and Dulux both offer this service. 9. Use decorating tricks to save money. If you can’t afford carpet, for example, either sand your floorboards or paint them, and add a simple rug for a clean, contemporary look. Instead of bespoke curtains, choose Roman or roller blinds, which
use much less fabric and are correspondingly a great deal cheaper (you may even be able to buy them off the peg or make them yourself). Can’t afford to have the glass in an overlooked window beautifully etched? Then buy some stick-on window film, which is easy to use and inexpensive. 10. Think laterally. In a bathroom, for example, you can completely transform the look and feel of the room by changing the taps, loo seat, bath panel, window treatment and shower curtain. In a kitchen, consider replacing either the cupboard doors and drawer fronts, or carefully repainting them. A new worktop can also be relatively inexpensive, and will give the room a whole new look.

BEAUTY DESIGNER V BARGAIN BEAUTY BUYS
Do you love designer cosmetics? Or do you much prefer a bargain buy? Whatever your preference, it’s worth checking out our guide to when to splurge and when to save, so that you can get the best value - and results - from the products you spend your hard-earned cash on. Foundation - Splurge Foundation literally provides the foundation for the rest of your make-up. It evens out your natural skin and covers up flaws - like blemishes and scars - to leave you with a perfect finish. So it’s very important to choose the right one for you. Cheap products just can’t beat their costly counterparts when it comes to this all-important purchase, because poorer formulations don’t have the staying power and the true-to-skin colour of pricier versions. To find the one that’s ideal for you, head to your nearest department store and take advantage of some expert advice. Find a shade which matches your natural colouring and works best for your requirements - like skin type and coverage.
High-end foundations are formulated with all of these things in mind and come in a variety of true-to-life shades. Built to solve the problems presented by cheap foundations, these products really are a cut above the others. Try Estee Lauder Double Wear £28.50. Blusher - Save Everyone needs a bit of colour in their cheeks; fortunately you don’t have to spend too much to find the one that’s perfect for you. Blusher is definitely one of those items that you can save on, because high-end products don’t differ too greatly from budget versions. Just make sure that you choose a natural shade, as cheaper colours can be a little more intense and unnatural if applied too heavily. Try No7 Natural Blush Tint Powder £8.00. Mascara - Splurge Full, long lashes really do make your eyes look more beautiful, so it’s worth investing in a quality mascara. Cheap mascara is often disappointing because its consistency doesn’t match that of more expensive products, and so leaves lashes looking sticky, clumpy and undefined.

Eyeshadow - Save Generally you can opt for wearing cheaper eyeshadow as there isn’t too much difference between budget and more costly versions; as long as you choose neutral shades, as stronger colours can be very harsh and unnatural looking. Cheap eyeshadow does have a tendency to be more glittery and shimmery though, so be careful using it if you’re a more mature lady because it will emphasise every line and crease around your eyes. Try Bourjois Little Round Pot Intense Eyeshadow £6.99. Powder - Splurge Like foundation, there is a real difference between budget and high-end face powder. Expensive products are finely milled, making their texture extra soft and natural looking on the skin, whilst cheaper versions won’t last as long or match your skin tone well. A good powder sets your foundation and finishes your make-up look, so make sure you splurge and invest in a quality one. Try Guerlain Les Voilettes Compact Powder £35.
Body Control Pilates Classes Bishopbriggs - Torrance - Strathblane For details of classes and private tuition, including the new Back4Good programme for the management of low back pain, call Jane Meek Body Control Pilates, the Body Control wordmark and Back4Good are registered trademarks used under licence.
Lip-gloss - Save Lip-gloss formulations are pretty similar, so save some money when you buy yours. There are literally hundreds of colours and flavours to choose from and all of them will instantly serve to plump up your lips. Try those with a brush rather than the rub on type as these are said to be gentler and less damaging on the lips. Try Barry M Lip-gloss Wand £4.49. Highlighter - Splurge A good quality highlighter will perk up your complexion, accentuate your favourite features, and even camouflage aging skin. There are many different ones on the market - some are in powder form, others liquid - but find the right one and your face will be instantly lifted with a radiant and youthful glow. And if there’s one product that you really should splurge on, it’s YSL’s Touche Eclat Radiant Touch £25.

FINANCE WHY SAVING DOESN’T HAVE TO BE TAXING It’s that time of year again. Suddenly everyone is talking about tax free savings and the banks and building societies are in overdrive, advertising different types of ISAs. Perhaps you’ve never considered tax free saving before, either because you’re not sure how it works or don’t think you have enough money to make it worth it. But you’re really missing a trick if all your savings are being taxed so read on for an introduction to making the most of your savings in the next tax year. Avoiding and Reducing Tax in your Savings If you don’t earn enough to pay tax that is, you earn less than your annual tax allowance then you won’t have to pay tax on your savings income, unless it takes your total income over your tax allowance. But as most banks and building societies automatically tax your interest, you’ll need to register as a nontaxpayer by filling in form R85 here: http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/forms/r85.pdf (you need to fill in a new form for each institution you bank with). If you’re not sure if this applies to you, take a look at the handy helpsheet at http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/helpsheets/r85helpsheet.pdf. Don’t forget that children are liable for tax too the majority of them won’t earn enough to go over their allowance (unless they’re a Harry Potter star or a teen with a remarkably well-paid part-time job), but parents need to fill in an R85 form on their behalf. It’s worth bearing in mind that if money given by a parent produces interest of more than £100 a year, the interest is treated as part of that parent’s income, so be careful (this only applies to money from parents, not from any other relatives or friends). If you or your partner pay different tax rates, or either of you pays none at all, consider putting your savings in the name of whoever has the smaller tax liability. Of course some couples may not be happy for their savings to be in just one name; that’s a decision they need to make together. But if your partner is paying higher rate tax of 40% and you’re paying the basic 20% rate or no tax at all it obviously makes good financial sense for savings to be in your name, and vice versa.
Tax Free Savings Even if you’re a tax-payer, there are government sanctioned schemes that allow you to receive savings interest tax-free. Tax-free saving schemes allow you to invest a limited amount of money in each tax-year. What kind of tax-free savings are available? ISAs The most well-known tax-free saving scheme is the ISA (Individual Savings Account). An ISA allows you to save a limited amount each year. In the 2013/14 tax year, adults may invest up to a maximum of £11,520 in ISAs. There are two main kinds of ISA; Cash ISAs and Stocks and Shares ISAs (sometimes called ‘Investment ISAs’). You can save the full ISA allowance in a Stocks and Shares ISA, but only £5760 per year in a Cash ISA, so you may decide to invest in a Cash ISA and put the rest in a Stocks and Shares ISA if you want to invest your full allowance. Many Cash ISAs now have instant access facilities, which is handy if you want to save but think that you might need to dip into your ISA.
To advertise call Scott or Natalie on 0141 945 4210 or email: info@sbdirectory.co.uk
39
ISAs are also available for children up to 18 too, but Junior ISAs have an investment limit of just £3,720 per annum and those born between 1 Sep 2002 and 2 Jan 2011 aren’t eligible, as they have Trust Funds. Of course, most children won’t be paying tax anyway so is there any point? Possibly - because one advantage is that savings in a Junior ISA automatically convert into an adult cash ISA when the child turn 18, and then remain tax-free even if the amount is over the adult ISA limit. The Government backed NSI (National Savings and Investments) schemes are also worth investigating. They sometimes offer Savings Certificates which give tax-free returns without affecting your ISA allowance. You can also save tax-free with a Friendly Society. Their savings schemes or policies often come with other features such as life or health insurance, but they’re designed for long term investing; charges or interest reductions can be
severe if you stop payments or end the policy. Pensions Pensions are one type of saving we should all have, and pension contributions accrue tax relief. You can usually pay extra voluntary contributions into your employer’s pension scheme, and can also pay into a personal pension scheme (either as a top-up or your sole pension).Of course pensions aren’t designed for short-term investment; some pensions will allow you to take early lump sums, but always check terms and conditions before deciding how much money to commit long term. Of course, that’s sound advice for all saving. Spend time comparing schemes and accounts and always read those terms and conditions carefully. Fun fact: The average UK coin jar contains £38.35, whilst 9% of the nation’s coin jars hold £100. By Jasmine Birtles, Moneymagpie.com

What is Myofascial Release? Myofascial Release (from myo, muscle, and fascia, band) is a unique approach to manual therapy pioneered by US physiotherapist John Barnes. At its simplest, MFR involves gentle stretching of tight, painful areas in the client's body using slow, sustained pressure or subtle traction. At its most profound, it reaches deep beneath these superficial restrictions to unwind the body's unconscious holding patterns which, though we may not know it, are often the root cause of our dis-ease. Fascia forms a continuous 3D web throughout the body, providing a framework of support for the skeleton, muscles, organs, nerves and blood vessels. Without fascia to hold us up we would collapse in a heap. A healthy fascial system is relaxed and resilient, acting as our body's shock absorber. After injury, however and injury can be both physical and emotional - our fascia begins to tighten and harden in the areas affected. Over time, as the body tries to compensate for these restrictions, it creates further imbalance and tension at sites ever more distant from that of the original trauma. Thus a problem which originated in the

knee/hip could eventually cause pain in the shoulder/neck, and vice versa. Research suggests that the body remembers everything that happens to it and stores that information in the fascial tissue. These subconscious memories of past experience may be associated with postural positions, actions or emotions. The body/mind is also capable of creating habits and bracing patterns to protect us from physical and/or emotional pain and discomfort. While these holding patterns are essential short-term coping mechanisms they can persist into the longer term, resulting in a new set of problems for the body. MFR practitioners seek out underlying patterns of fascial restriction and follow them to source. We do not treat by numbers. No two clients are identical, even if they present with apparently identical problems. Find the pain, yes - but look elsewhere for the cause. For more information on how MFR can help promote health and wellbeing, contact Jane Meek, MFR practitioner, on 07759 182236.

MOTORS INFINITI Q50S HYBRID
What is it? Remember the Infiniti G37? No, we didn’t think so. When it quietly appeared on the scene in 2009, it was one of the first Infiniti’s Brits could buy. But with, how should we say this, interesting styling, a thirsty 320bhp 3.7-litre V6 petrol under the bonnet and acres of switchgear poached from low-rent Nissans, it wasn’t terribly successful. But that was then and Infiniti now has a far more appealing proposition for the nation’s fleet managers used to buying 3 Series BMWs and Mercedes C-Classes. We’ve already driven this car abroad but now we’re one of the first to slip behind the wheel of a British car - and Infiniti UK is understandably proud of its latest product. “It’s a halo car for us,” a spokesperson told us on our test drive. “A real performance car with the added benefit of low running costs.” What’s under the bonnet? We have the all-wheel-drive Q50S Hybrid on test - you could opt for a version fitted with Infiniti’s new 2.2-litre diesel - and it sports a 364bhp 3.5-litre V6 petrol mated
to a 50kW electric motor. It tops out at 155mph and reaches 60mph in 5.1 seconds. To put that into perspective, a BMW M5 will reach 60mph in 4.1 seconds but the Q50S will return a combined MPG of 41.5 and emit 159g/km of CO2. It’s quick and punchy, but it won’t be the best-seller in the UK - that’ll be the diesel. What’s the spec like? It seems to have everything you could want from this type of saloon. The Q50S Hybrid retails at £41,635 and comes absolutely loaded with tech and electric wizardry. The headlines are: full leather upholstery, NASA-developed ‘fatigue free’ front seats, climate control, parking sensors, Bluetooth with streaming and Infiniti’s clever new infotainment system. The latter not only looks neat but works well too - although we weren’t behind the wheel for long so we can’t say how easy it would be to live with. The Q50S has another crafty little piece of tech too. Called Active Lane Control, the system reads the white lines on the road and keeps the car tracking safely between them.

Any rivals? Well, it’s the three big guns that make up the biggest competition - namely, BMW’s 3 Series, the MercedesBenz C-Class and the Audi A4. There’s no doubt the Infiniti matches the Bavarian threesome in many areas and it does have individuality up its sleeve too. For other left-field choices, there’s also the Volvo S60.

Complaints have been aimed at the Q50S’s steeringby-wires system that can feel artificial. But on our admittedly short test drive, we had little complaint. While it doesn’t match the sheer precision of the 3 Series, the Q50S can be set up for the driver’s tastes whether sporting or The Knowledge comfort and Model: Infiniti Q50S Hybrid AWD is perfectly Price: £41,635 adequate. MOTHERS DAY ’
MAKE YOUR MOTHER’S DAY
Mother’s Day is celebrated all around the world, usually in March or in May. In the UK, it is a mixture of a Christian tradition, and the celebration of motherhood that began in the USA in the early 20th century. During the 16th century, people in service would return to their home or ‘mother’ church on the fourth Sunday in Lent - Mothering Sunday. Mother’s Day as we know it became a regular event in the 1950s, largely thanks to businesses keen to exploit its commercial potential. From the day you have a baby or adopt a child, your life changes forever. People tell you this when you’re pregnant, but it’s only when it happens that you really understand what they mean. Suddenly there’s someone who depends on you entirely. Every decision you make from now on will be based on their needs or desires.
Mums have to take on every role in the family carer, teacher, agony aunt, sergeant major, personal assistant, taxi driver… And it doesn’t stop when the children leave home. Now approaching 40, I still rely on my mum for advice, friendship, help with childcare, emergency loans and the occasional kick up the backside to get things done.
Being a mother can be the best of jobs and the worst of jobs. For every heart-warming moment of pride and loveliness, there’s a blazing row or slammed door (but hopefully with a hug and a sorry afterwards).
It’s only as you get older, especially if you have children of your own, that you realise how your parents felt as you grew up why they made you do your homework, go to bed, stop fighting with your brother, eat properly, save money and above all, be careful!

Bluebell Wood
Florist & Gift Shop
The founder of Mother’s Day in the US, Anna Jarvis, eventually regretted campaigning to get the day recognised because it became so commercialised. She hated the fact that people would buy a card with a printed message rather than writing a letter.
Mother’s Day bespoke hand-tie d bouquet from £2 8 pick-up plants & arrangements from £10
It’s lovely to buy or make a card and give flowers and chocolates. You can also do something special to show you care - maybe take on a job that she hates or treat her to a day of pampering.
Flowers and gifts for all occasions
But this year, why not go beyond the message in the card and write a few personal lines of your own to tell your mother how much you love her. Make sure she knows that she really is the best mum in the world (like mine).

GARDENING
KITCHENS FOR LIVING
A TOUCH OF THE ORIENT
As the new gardening year is under way, is it time to embark on a new era in your garden? It can be really refreshing to have a change of style, not necessarily in your whole garden but perhaps you could create a different and contrasting feel in a small part of your plot to the rest of your well-loved garden?
easily using a simple plank of wood, allowing you to cross over an existing or new pond or other water feature. Stain the wood an interesting colour: perhaps even bright Japanese-style red if you’re feeling daring and a very simple structure like this suddenly looks great and carries a certain style and impact.
Do you like the idea of a touch of oriental charm? Whether you want to create a Japanese garden to replace your existing one or just a Japanese corner, there is a definite appeal to the Japanese style of gardening in spaces large or small.
Thinking of water, why not create your own ‘deer chase’? Although these moving water sculptures do not actually seem to have any helpful effect when it comes to scaring unwanted deer from your garden, they epitomise the Japanese garden.
The Japanese style is largely very simplistic and aims to create a relaxed, calm environment which is in harmony with its surroundings and with you too. In any garden you’re going to need walls, fences, pathways and so forth, but these can be created to be beautiful and calming, whilst also serving their purpose. If you use natural materials such as wood or of course bamboo, they blend in better with the surroundings of an existing or a newly planned garden and instantly help to create that oriental feel. You can either construct your own barriers and screens or take a look at the ever-extending range of ready-made bamboo screens and garden dividers. Provided the surface is made relatively slip-proof, a small bridge can be created quite
All you need to set up is a source of water powered by a pump, then allow the water to pour out from a bamboo spout and then into another hollowed out piece of bamboo. As the weight of the water increases in the hollowed out bamboo it causes it to tip and to swivel around slightly. Once filled up it then tilts downwards and pours its water into the basin or bowl beneath. When empty it clunks back into position. If you want something even simpler, then buy some wide diameter bamboo canes, hollow one out, cut the end at an angle and simply create a trickling water spout. Provided you fix everything up with a pump, the water can then be recycled around from the bowl or basin and back into the trickling pipe.

Gravelled areas raked into simple patterns resembling waves or entire circles also help to create a Japanese feel. These can take up the majority of the garden space, be a relatively small area or perhaps link your existing garden into the Japanese ‘room’ that you have created. Concentric rings of raked gravel or sand look particularly dramatic if you place a sizeable, interestingly shaped boulder, stone or specimen plant in the centre of the middle circle. A visit to a few local garden centres or maybe even DIY stores will reveal just how many different sizes and colours of stone chippings and gravel are now readily available. Don’t forget that you’ll also need some landscape fabric to lay beneath the stone to help deter weeds. When it comes to plants there are several which instantly help to evoke that Japanese effect. The socalled Japanese maples with their intricately divided leaves epitomise Japanese gardens and many will turn brilliant shades in the autumn. Japanese azaleas too can be used to great effect and can bring in some of those really bright colours which look so good for the relatively simple garden surrounding them. Pine trees may be too large for most gardens, but you can gradually bend the stems of a smaller one to create a bonsai effect. Of course, if you’re a collector of bonsai then most of these trees actually enjoy spending the summer outside in a garden and provided they are kept adequately maintained, will look great in your Japanese garden. A trip down to your local garden centre is bound to supply you with a few oriental-themed containers. Plant one or two of these up with a small acer, camellia, miniature azalea or miniature bamboo and you will really help to complete that oriental touch.

TECH GUIDE FOOD GADGETS
Handy gadgets to help prepare a meal If it’s true that the way to someone’s heart is through their stomach, wouldn’t it be better to wow your partner with something you’ve cooked up yourself? Best of all, you can use it as an excuse to splash out on some new kitchen gadgets too. We’re big fans of Joseph Joseph’s brightly coloured (and quite expensive) cooking gadgets, such as its foldable TriScale (£30), its Elevate raised utensils and its very useful Chop2Pot foldable chopping boards. If the price is a little high you’ll find shopping around online can save you a packet, and there are plenty of more affordable imitations too. Grating, chopping, blending, pureeing, julienning, mixing, do-everything food processors are fantastic things, and while they can be pricey there are plenty of deals around: a quick bit of online research uncovers Kenwood’s FP736 for £89.99 instead of the £120 RRP, and multi-function blenders such as the Shef Collection
for £17.99 instead of £49.99. If that’s still too much or you just don’t have room for all the attachments, electric choppers can be picked up for around £12. Some of our favourite gadgets are the simplest ones: Microplane graters were originally designed for woodworking but are fantastic for parmesan and can be found for as little as £10, while mandoline slicers take the effort out of preparing fruit and veg. Expect to pay around £10 to £20 for a good one. If your partner’s a barbecue fan, don’t let the fact it’s still winter deter you: Philips’ Avance Table Grill promises all the taste of a smoky barbecue without having to leave the house. It looks like a chunky George Foreman grill and at £95 costs quite a bit more than one, but unlike some of George’s grills the plate is detachable and dishwasher safe and you can use its unique infusers to add smoke flavours (from real wood chips) or liquids such as marinades.

Just make sure you put it near a cooker hood if you’re using it to smoke your food, or your romantic evening could end up involving the local fire brigade. We’re keen on celebrity chefs here in Britain, and one of the biggest is Jamie Oliver - and he hasn’t been shy when it comes to lending his name to everything from tea towels to salad servers. He’s also put his name on Philips’ Homecooker, which promises “a completely fresh approach to cooking”. It’s a cross between a slow cooker and a food processor, and it chops, slices, shreds, grates, cooks, stirs, steams and keeps cooked food warm. The HomeCooker is a fairly frightening £250, and if you want one you’ll have to go to John Lewis.
particularly easy, and while the larger models cost around £30 you can pick up plastic ones for around £11. They’re much easier to use than traditional corkscrews and less likely to damage the cork, although if you’d rather keep things old-school you can pick up a waiter’s friend corkscrew for as little as £2.45. Even good ones won’t cost much more than £10.
No romantic dinner would be complete without a nice bottle of wine, but if you’re worried about wrestling with a traditional corkscrew there are plenty of alternatives. Le Creuset’s Screwpulls make opening wine

BOOKS MARCH ON
Now the weather’s improving and spring has almost sprung, it’s time to head outside and explore the great outdoors. OK, so this might be taking the month of March a tad literally, but how about taking it literary? Here are some of our top tips for great reads about epic journeys. Walk in the Woods, Bill Bryson Far from being a stroll among the bluebells, the Appalachian Trail is a two thousand mile route that goes right the way along the East Coast of North America, from Georgia to Maine. Bill Bryson’s hilarious account of all the things that will kill you along the way will have you longing for a bit of adventure. This is a trek that’s a journey into the wild. Some don’t make it alive. Rest assured, if the bears don’t get you then the poison ivy will.
Walking Home: A Poet’s Journey, Simon Armitage Most walkers complete the Pennine Way by going South to North but Simon Armitage decided it would be more poetic if he did it the other way around. He made the 256 mile journey from Kirk Yetholm on the Scottish border to his native Yorkshire, and the village where he was born. True to form, Armitage decided not to look like he was on a Duke of Edinburgh expedition but to wander as a lonely troubadour, penniless on the Pennine Way and give poetry readings in village halls, churches and pubs. It’s packed with Northern soul and would be best enjoyed with a pint of stout in a pub
The Hobbit, J R R Tolkien If there’s one thing in life that hobbits enjoy more than anything, it’s comfort. From the sanctuary of his hobbithole, Bilbo Baggins is plucked by the wizard Gandalf and taken off on an extraordinary and most unexpected journey, deep into Middle Earth. Accompanying Gandalf and his band of thirteen dwarves, the world’s most reluctant hero must help them raid the treasures of Smaug the Magnificent, a dangerous dragon. Written for Tolkien’s own grandchildren, it’s the prelude to The Lord of the Rings and a fantastic odyssey into the unknown.
Rabbit-Proof Fence, Doris Pilkington, Nugi Garimara In 1931 the Australian government dictated that all Aboriginal and mixed race children should be removed from their homes and put into settlements to assimilate into white culture. This is the true story of three little girls who followed the rabbit-proof fence 1000 miles across the harsh Australian outback, all the way back home. Doris Pilkington’s mother was one of those girls and here she tells her mother’s remarkable survival story. It’s an absolutely unbelievable account of the human spirit and its resilience.
