WELCOME Welcome to the first edition of 2013 which will hopefully be a good year for everyone. We seem to have escaped the worst of the snow for a change this year but hope you have enjoyed the little bouts of snow we did have, I know our little one certainly did and is looking for more to build another snowman or go sledging but lets hope that winter is coming to an end as the lighter nights creep in. This is also the start to the wedding season and to celebrate this we have a few wedding related advertisers along with a special wedding related article - so if wedding bells are in the air be sure to look at some of the great offers our wedding advertisers are running in this issue. Remember if you are looking for any type of business, have a look in here first to try and support our local businesses as much as possible and please mention the Bearsden & Milngavie Directory when contacting them - it makes all the difference and you could get a discount as a result! If you would like to include anything into the directory please drop us a line or get in touch - we would love to hear from you.

Zagros Hot Towel Shaves to make you feel like the proper gentleman

Hot towel shaves & facials are now seeing a great demand and Zagros in Milngavie is the perfect place to indulge. The open razor shave offers unparalleled luxury, craftsmanship, and a zen-like experience. The luxuriousness of a traditional straight razor shave cannot be over stated. From the hot lather on your face, to the smooth & irritation free shave, you cannot experience a better shave. Add the hot towel and face massage and your truly in the lap of luxury. If you haven’t experienced one yet it’s highly suggested you try it - you won’t regret it. At Zagros their approach is very simple - they provide a service to the everyday man whereby he can escape, relax and enjoy some proper male grooming services but without a West End price tag. The owner Kaywan’s vision is to restore some good old traditional values and quality service back to the male community.

You can sit back and relax and take a real hot towel shave. This includes the application of two steaming hot towels enriched in lemon cologne, two hot lathers of Italian formulated shaving creams, both including a pre-post undercoat cream, brushed on with a pure badger hair brush. The ritual is then finished with a cold towel, a post cream face massage, and a fine cologne splash. Zagros are there to look after you like proper Gentlemen. Zagros are also available for both ladies & gents hair cuts along with discount for children and senior citizens. Please note that, although not necessary, making an appointment is advisable for weekend bookings, due to the high demand. They are also open on Sundays between 10am & 5pm. MUSIC NEW RELEASES Ocean Colour Scene - Painting Not many bands get to make it this far so it is to be hugely applauded that Ocean Colour Scene release their landmark 10th studio album. The band is most famous in their homeland for riding the crest of the '90s Britpop wave, they have at least one bona-fide classic under their belt with 1996's Moseley Shoals, which spawned a few hit singles and they are also known for opening for the likes of Paul Weller and Oasis back in the day. The album is a representation of all that is great about British rock; anthems, heartfelt ballads and weird, left-of-middle psychedelic wig-outs. Quite simply, Painting is another great record from British pops most under-rated storytellers. As artistic statements go, it might just be their masterpiece.

Frightened Rabbit - Pedestrian Verse For over six years and three critically-acclaimed albums, Frightened Rabbit (from Selkirk, now based in Glasgow) have been tirelessly working on building a dedicated fan base around the world with their crushingly emotive, marvelously honest and unmistakably Scottish approach to alt-folk. Shortly after the release of their last record, The Winter of Mixed Drinks, the band left their beloved independent label home of Fat Cat and joined the major leagues by penning a deal with Atlantic. Now, 2013 could be the year of the Rabbit. Have they sold-out or are they finally cashing in on quality? Either way, they may not be Scotland's favourite secret for much longer.

New Order - Waiting for the Sirens’ Call New Order's mini-album of previously unreleased material will still delight fans of the band with its feelgood sound. More than a year has passed since New Order's mini-album of unreleased material was announced and the contents date back further. With the Salford indie icons stressing that the tracks were deliberately saved from sessions for 2005 album Waiting For The Sirens' Call. It does sound like cracking open a time capsule; It's also the last release to feature Peter Hook's gorgeous, brooding basslines; its delay was partly due to his split from New Order and these feel-good Sirens are worth holding on to. Lost and found. Nearly eight years after Waiting for the Sirens' Call, New Order finally unleash this EP of remarkably polished leftovers. If they truly are the band's final recordings with departed bassist Peter Hook, at least they parted company on a high note. WEDDINGS ORGANISING YOUR BIG DAY

It’s your big day, and with months of discussion about dresses, colour themes and table decorations, the comfort and enjoyment of guests is often overlooked. But if your friends and family are enjoying themselves and everyone is getting along famously, it’ll make the celebrations even more special for you. So how can you make sure a good time is had by all? The first thing to bear in mind is that many people that come to your wedding won’t know each other, so it’s important that you give everyone the best chance of becoming better acquainted. You may not have time to introduce people personally, so instead ask a close friend or relative to look out for those who are coming along on their own. Position individuals considerately on the table plan next to someone with similar interests or who works in the same field. It’s also important to place quieter individuals next to somebody warm and welcoming. An engagement party is also a great idea – hire out an area of a bar somewhere accessible to everyone so that your guests will have a chance to mingle before your big day. A common problem at weddings is that family and friendship groups may not have seen each other for a

while, meaning that great huddles of people may form. A fantastic way of breaking these up and encouraging people to mix is by incorporating some games into the day’s itinerary. You might have chandeliers, sugarcoated almonds and a six-foot train, but a bit of fun won’t detract from the glamour and sense of occasion, it’ll simply allow your guests to let their hair down. Organise a sweepstake for how long the best man’s speech will take and ask an usher to time it, with the winner receiving a prize. Create a pub quiz with questions which have been tailored to different groups in the room, as well as some associated with the bride and groom, so that everyone has an answer to contribute. This can be done at the tables between courses, so lay out some answer sheets and you’ll encourage everyone to work together. If you have a sunny day and a garden, get some lawn activities going – giant Connect 4, Twister, croquet or even a friendly game of cricket. Check out amazon.co.uk, play.com and EBay for great deals (and with EBay you can resell them after the day too!) Give people a talking point. The more inventive aspects of the day you can include, the better. But you don’t have to come up with lots of mad ideas for the sake of it,

11

instead use this as a way of personalising your wedding day and making it all the more special. For example, instead of flowers go for some quirky centrepieces. Don’t forget any little ones. Look after them and their parents can relax and enjoy themselves. So think about food timings; if you have a midday ceremony and the wedding breakfast isn’t until mid-afternoon, arrange a hamper with biscuits, packets of raisins, bananas and cartons of squash to see them through. Avoid E numbers and too many sweets – and have the basket on a high table so that tiny hands can’t stuff themselves silly. Don’t forget that weddings can be boring for children, so pick up some cheap toys to keep them amused during speeches. When your evening guests arrive, get the party started by jazzing up your first dance. This can be the most worrying part of the day for the groom, so invest in some choreography or choose a song that’s a little less daunting and involving other members of the wedding party can also ease the anxiety. Instead of cradling each other to a Whitney Houston classic, think about a song which makes you both laugh, or something with a fun routine to follow: Grease is a good one, as is

Saturday Night Fever, or something which brings back memories such as a cheesy 80s tune. By choosing an upbeat track, you’re likely to get people up onto the dance floor, so encourage children and grandparents to join in and pluck people from the crowd so that everyone feels involved. Don’t be afraid to break tradition if it suits you. Why not skip the receiving line, so that people aren’t forced to wait around, only to struggle for something to say? And when it comes to speeches, keep them short and sweet – perhaps with just the bride and groom offering a few words of thanks? The trick with all these personal touches is to delegate. Plan well in advance and ask for help from your ushers and bridesmaids – it’s what they’re there for. The most important thing to remember is to stay relaxed; the more stressed you become with all the details, the less fun your wedding day will be. When people talk about ‘that fantastic wedding’, they generally mean that it was a comfortable, fun, and relaxing day spent celebrating two people they love.

TRAVEL HIDDEN ALGARVE

Long ago in the Algarve, says the legend, a Nordic princess pined for her frozen homeland until her husband, the King of the Moors, planted thousands of almond trees. The snow-white blossom soon brought a smile to her lips and to this day almost every house in the Algarve looks out to an almond tree. In the lush rolling hills of the interior, the trees herald the first days of spring, flowering among vineyards, orange groves, fig and carob trees. Just a stone’s throw away from the coast, it’s a quiet land of orchards and meadows, meandering lanes and forests and redroofed villages tucked in the greenery, their whitewashed houses topped by filigree chimney pots, in Moorish style, and rooftop terraces where laundry and fruit dry side by side. Goats wander across the road and sometimes a donkey and cart rattle along the cobbled streets. Up there, the cool wooded slopes of the Serra de Monchique are dotted with rivers and lakes, moors and dark forests where rosemary and oleander splash colour in the clearings. The fragrance of eucalyptus and pine follows you along the trails but you find swathes of chestnut and oak and ‘strawberry trees’ whose innocent-looking berries are eagerly collected to make

the local firewater. It’s a paradise for ramblers and birdwatchers hoping to spot goshawks and royal eagles. With a subtropical micro-climate, mountain and sea all in one, the Serra claims over 1000 species of plants but now and then a church bell chiming in the distance betrays the presence of an isolated village, perched on a terraced slope where vegetables and fruit compete for space. The road to the top winds past the spa resort of Caldas de Monchique, once the site of Roman baths and the place where King Joao II came to take the waters in search of a cure, in the late 15th century. Now the emphasis is on beauty and well being, pampering and relaxation. In a deep wooded glen, quaint buildings gather around a shaded square and you are welcome to stroll in the park, quench your thirst and best of all, make a wish at the Fountain of Youth.

Beyond this charming watering place, you reach the rustic hill town of Monchique, once a prosperous weaving centre for wool and cloth, still famous today for a wide range of craft, linen, wicker baskets, tree sculptures, wooden spoons, dried flowers and scissor chairs, invented, some say, by the Romans and so-named because of the way they fold up. All sorts of goods spill out on the pavements but step inside and you may find the shopkeeper quietly nursing her baby while grandma is shelling peas for the family’s supper. Then follow the lanes climbing up to the square and the whole town is at your feet, tumbling down the hillside among camellias, hydrangeas and fruit trees. The panorama is superb but anyone with a head for heights and twisty roads will also enjoy the drive up to

Foia, just five miles away and the highest point at nearly 3,000 feet. Standing on the summit, battling with the wind, you feel like the knights of yore surveying the wild rolling lands of the Algarve, from the verdant slopes of the Serra to the coastal plain and the Atlantic glistening like silver on the horizon.

Apollo Blinds Lead The Way In Child Safety Apollo Blinds is aiming to strike a chord with homeowners in East Dunbartonshire and surrounding areas — precisely because it has the area’s widest selection of cordless blinds. The owners of the showroom on Kilbowie Road, Clydebank are keen to raise awareness of the array of cordless blinds, not only because they spell the end for unsightly cords but also because of the child safety aspect. Martin and Brian Long have been very vocal in their campaign to promote child safety for window blinds, especially as unsecured window blind looped cords have resulted in a number of fatalities of young children across the UK who had become tangled in them. “Window blinds from responsible retailers like Apollo have come with safety devices as standard for a number of years on blinds with cords,” said Martin. “But Apollo has led the way in developing cordless blinds,

which aren’t just safe but look stunning in any room in any home.” The latest generation blinds for kitchens, bedrooms, living rooms and conservatories are beautiful to look at and mesmerising to watch as they have brilliant actions to open, close, lower and raise them. Martin continues “We would urge everyone who would like further information to call in and see us to see Apollo’s pioneering cordless blinds.” You can visit Martin and Brian’s showroom at 36 Kilbowie Road, Clydebank to see an extensive range of cordless blinds or call 0141 941 1852 to get practical information on child safety. CINEMA LINCOLN

Honest Abe is the subject of Steven Spielberg's latest historical outing, which boasts an Oscar-winning ensemble cast including Daniel Day-Lewis and Tommy Lee Jones. Don't be mislead, though, this isn't quite the epic one might assume at first glance. Of course there's certainly an element of grandiosity about Lincoln. No right-minded American director would set his sights on one of the most influential and respected U.S. political figures in history without realising their vision with a little pride and cinematic pageantry. So the cinematography is wonderful, and the set designs by Rick Carter are wonderfully evocative. Washington during the 1860s lives and breathes, with no expense spared when it comes to establishing shots and overall production authenticity. Everything about it suggests we're seconds away from bloody battle scenes, seen through smoke with stars and stripes just visible in the distance.

In some ways that's true, there are Civil War sequences included within the intimidating two and a half hour running time. But realistically Lincoln is more about a struggle within the United States government, a truly savage fight, but one less saturated in crimson compared with physical conflict. Following the plotlines of Doris Kearns Goodwin's bestselling book, Team of Rivals: The Political Genius of Abraham Lincoln, or more specifically the last two chapters then, the actual focus here is on the 13th Amendment to America's Constitution. As most people on this side of the Atlantic will be relatively unfamiliar with the technical terminology, this is the addition to America's bill of rights that outlawed slavery forever. Needless to say, back in the day some factions didn't want that to happen, and so we watch as the President, just months before he was assassinated, fights to push the bill through and ensure Emancipation isn't seen as a temporary measure. There's plenty more to the full story, mind, but that represents the long and short of it- a far cry from War Horse .

More accurately, the two are worlds apart, with Lincoln, perhaps against all the odds, arguably belonging to a list of Spielberg's finest films. Day Lewis, who plays the eponymous leader, is exceptional as ever, dominating the screen every time he sets foot in front of camera, and stopping well short of any overblown, gushing portrayal of a character long since placed on an inconceivably high pedestal by the population of his beloved nation.

fuel that allowed his fire to burn. She was also rather intimidating, if this stellar performance is anything to go by. On the whole then Lincoln is one of those films that makes you thank Tinsel Town for major actors in mature roles, guided by unarguably adept directors, and as such ranks as this month's one to watch.

The supporting players aren't bad, either. Tommy Lee Jones is great as Pennsylvania congressman Thaddeus Steven, and brings a hit of 'proper' Hollywood to events with some slickly delivered lines. Meanwhile, Sally Field (Forest Gump, The Amazing Spider-Man) excels as the woman behind her man, Mary Lincoln, whom many believe to have been the

Fill in the grid so that every row, every column, and every 3 x 3 box contains the digits 1 through 9. That’s all there is too it. There’s no math involved. The grid has numbers, but nothing has to add up to anything else. You solve the puzzle with reasoning and logic. It’s fun. It’s challenging. It’s addictive! Solving time is typically 10 to 30 minutes, depending on your skill and experience.

KAYS Garage & MOT Centre Generations of history in Bearsden In 1936 my grandfather, Robert Simpson Kay, started his own business on Drymen Road servicing and repairing cars in the Bearsden and Milngavie area. The business prospered but was put on hold throughout World War II while Robert went to work for Rolls Royce, contributing to the War effort by making and repairing aero-engines for fighter plane / bombers. After the War was over it was back to business as usual and time for the next generation of Kays to enter into the family trade.

premises have also proven to be ideal for the garage’s expansion into modern day mechanical practices such as diagnostics & fixed price servicing. Vehicle Servicing We can service almost any make and model of vehicle. We follow manufacturer’s service schedules, paying attention to timing belt changes, diagnostic checks, air conditioning checks, brake fluid changes etc or we can offer our own “tailored” service schedules to suit your vehicles needs. You can wait in our reception area while we carry out the service or leave your vehicle with us or why not ask us if we can take you home or collect your vehicle with our FREE collection and delivery service. To book in now for a service or vehicle repair call us on 0141 954 6001 and mention this directory.

At the start of the 1960’s with my father, Alistair Kay, at the helm, the business moved to new premises on Station Road. It was here that Alistair joined forces with Bill Kyles to create "Kay & Kyles", a partnership which many of my customers today remember fondly. Comprising of brand new garage facilities, a petrol filling station and a Hillman dealership, Kay & Kyles thrived at the Station Road site for many years. In 1985 Bill Kyles retired and my father carried on the business, now known as Station Garage, on his own. I started work at Station Garage in 1986 and the rest, as they say, is history... The Garage Today With Alistair having retired, and following the sale of the Station Road premises, I moved the business, now known as “Kays Garage” to Duntocher in 2004. Five years later the business moved again - this time to new state of the art premises in Anniesland Industrial Estate; and this is where you will find the garage today. The Anniesland premises have allowed the garage to expand its range of services offered to customers. A larger floor area has meant that the garage can now carry out MOT testing. The installation of additional ramps coupled with a general upswing in business has allowed the garage to expand its workforce. The new

INTERIORS THE TRUE COST OF A KITCHEN

So you’re planning to fit a new kitchen. But how do you ensure value for money? Here’s the lowdown on where to start, what to look for and all the questions to ask. Designing your kitchen Using an architect or interior designer is the most expensive option. Check whether they price per hour or for the job, and what’s included from simple outline sketches, to detailed drawings, assistance with planning applications, specifying suppliers, appointing contractors and supervising the entire process. At the other end of the scale, you could design it yourself for free, as well as source all components such as units, worktops and appliances. Remember that this will mean managing the project every step of the way. Many people go for the middle option of using their kitchen supplier’s design and installation service. If you’re asked to take your own measurements, be careful: even in a new-build, walls are not always true and the surfaces flat. Take at least three measurements at floor, work-surface and wall unit height, and work to the smallest width. Alternatively, if you are using a mid-range or luxury kitchen supplier, you may be asked to pay a few hundred pounds for them to measure up and produce a set of drawings specific to your room.

Comparing prices What’s included when you buy a kitchen? It varies widely, from a basic delivery of flat-packed cupboards to an all-encompassing service. When comparing prices, ensure that you know exactly what you’re buying a cheap option can cost considerably more if you end up paying for extra work. Ask the right questions. Will they dispose of existing fittings? Prepare plumbing and electrical work? Carry out associated building work? Fit floor and wall finishes? What about final decorating, electrical work and other carpentry such as shelving? Who will fit worktops, sinks, taps, appliances and extras such as plate racks and knife holders? Is there a guarantee and after-sales service? Checking for quality The main difference between buying an off-the-shelf kitchen from one of the budget suppliers and a pricier kitchen from a mid-price or luxury supplier is that the former will give you machine-made units that come off a factory line, whereas the latter offer hand-built cupboards by cabinet-makers. Machine-made units are not necessarily poor quality, though they will have “plant-on” doors that sit in front of the frame, rather than “in-frame” doors, which are individually made to fit perfectly inside their frames.

29

Doors Solid-wood doors with traditional mortise and tenon joints are often considered the highest quality. In-frame doors may expand and contract with the humidity (though the thicker they are, the less chance there is of this). A good supplier will offer an after-sales service to check their fitting after a few months. Veneered doors are usually cheaper, and are considered easier to maintain. Check whether painted doors are machinesprayed, or painted by hand with a brush. Carcasses Top-of-the-range carcasses are made of solid wood. Next-level-down ones are usually made from plywood or MDF veneer, while cheaper ones are made from chipboard, sometimes with just hardboard backs. Check the thickness of the chipboard 18-20mm is a good guide. Hinges Poor hinges are usually made from thin metal and will wear so thin that the doors hang unevenly. While many people are happy with good quality Blum or Blumstyle hinges (concealed, adjustable and available in a variety of specifications), solid brass butts are better. Check

whether hinges open through a complete 180 degree angle. Worktops At the budget end of the market, very cheap laminate worktops can burn, scratch and wear out quickly. Highpressure laminates are more durable than lowpressure ones; check that the underside is sealed to prevent water damage from appliances beneath. In a more luxurious kitchen package, you’ll be offered solid wood (at least 4cm thick is best), granite (3cm), manmade solid surfaces (such as Corian) or even glass or concrete. They’re more expensive, but they will last longer and look better. A last word: installation A good fitter can make an average kitchen appear fantastic, whereas poor fitting will make the most luxurious kitchen look terrible. Bear this in mind if you’re planning on doing it yourself. If you’re using a fitter, ask to see a kitchen they’ve installed previously. When buying an expensive, bespoke kitchen, it’s wise to use the company’s own fitters (you may not have an option to do otherwise). Otherwise, finding a good fitter is, as always, a question of recommendation.

Here to help - Paul’s DIY Services Property renovation, maintenance, even simple repairs can be daunting for homeowners. As costs rise, homeowners look for ways to save on property repairs. But if they can't do the work themselves and don't need a building company, how can they get their home fixed? The solution is a multi-skilled tradesman. Ever wondered how someone gets to learn many different building skills? Easy! Well it was in Paul's case. He was born into the family business and grew up in the building trade environment. His parents owned derelict houses which were transformed and made new! Paul worked in engineering and on building sites as a Carpenter, he has lived in the city, village & rural countryside and over the years has renovated his homes, built sheds, outbuildings & stables, having many years of trade experience. Paul's DIY Services started a few years ago and repairs properties in the Bearsden & Milngavie communities. “I often get asked 'what repair work do you do?', but it's easier to list what I don't do” says Paul. “My work varies considerably and each call is different. It ranges from the expected 'change a bulb or hang a picture' through to fixing handles, painting & decorating, repairing doors,

kitchen units, bedroom furniture, bathrooms, putting up shelves, lighting, tiling, wooden flooring; in fact, the list of repairs I can do is endless.” “House repairs should be done sooner rather than later, this would avoid costly rebuilds rather than simple economic repairs!” With each property there is an owner and Paul's client list has grown remarkably. Each client is as diverse as the properties themselves & and includes many local professional people, along with busy corporate diehards and the many individuals who make up the local community - even a few small businesses and clubs. This growth of clients is mainly because he treats every home as his own, taking care & pride, he works fanatically, paying attention to the smallest detail. “I have many wonderful clients, homeowners that I look after on a repeat basis and they're becoming like friends & family; they're not houses, they are homes” he says with a smile, as he harks back to times when he wore different hats! With many property repairs being small in nature it's often difficult knowing where to look for help or whom to call; comforting to know then, that when we need a fix or repair, that Paul's DIY Services is there to help us.

BEAUTY ALL ABOUT BROWS - HOW TO PLUCK LIKE A PROFESSIONAL

You might be surprised to read that there is a quick, simple and easy way to look years younger and all you’ll need is a pair of tweezers. Well-groomed eyebrows are essential for creating a youthful look, but it’s easy to forget them. Many women spend a great deal of time - and money - on trying to improve their skin, hiding lines and wrinkles and emphasising their best features, without giving their brows a second thought. Eyebrows serve as a frame for your eyes and by creating the right shape you can instantly lift your face, draw attention to your eyes and look altogether more beautiful. It is crucial to do it correctly however, because the wrong shape, size or even colour eyebrows can have a dramatically different effect and leave you looking permanently surprised, confused or angry.

guide to making sure you have beautiful brows: Work With What You Have The key is to work with your natural brow shape whatever that may be. Some people are lucky enough to have brows that naturally sweep up to an arch, whereas others are born with much straighter eyebrows and need to do a little more work to create the desired look. Trimming You might not think it, but eyebrow hair is often quite long. A little trimming is essential for allowing the hair to lie nicely and fall into shape easily. Remove any hair that grows beyond your upper brow line - do this by brushing your eyebrows up - with a brow brush - and snipping off the long ends. Next, brush the hair downwards in the opposite direction and cut the hairs that extend past the lower brow line. To finish, brush the hair into place. Your eyebrows should already be looking much better.

It’s important to think before you pluck so here’s our To advertise call Scott or Natalie on 0141 945 4210 or email: info@sbdirectory.co.uk

37

Time To Tweeze Tweezing can be a little painful at first, so it’s a good idea to open up your pores before you start by holding a warm facecloth over your brows. Ensure that you’re working in good natural light and determine where to begin. It’s good to start by holding a pencil vertically against the side of your nose and observe where it meets the brow - this gives a guide to where your eyebrows should begin. Pluck any hair away that grows before this point. Take a few hairs at a time and do the same on your other brow. Looking straight ahead, hold the pencil against your nostril and move it diagonally across the outer half of the iris of your eye - the point at which the pencil is lying is where the arch of your brow should peak. To create the best shape for your brow, gradually tweeze a line that tapers when you reach the peak of your arch. Again, take a little at a time from each brow and keep them both looking even.

To finish the shape, place your pencil back against your nostril and this time extend it diagonally to the outer corner of your eye. This is where your brow should be at its thinnest. Pluck from the arch to this point, tapering the line gradually, so that it is at its thinnest at the far corner. Don’t be tempted to pluck away too much hair remember that the fuller your brows are, the more youthful you’ll look. Work slowly and steadily, tweezing one hair at a time and be sure to keep standing back from the mirror to check how the shape is progressing. Define Your New Shape When you’re finished you can enhance your new shape by applying a little colour to make your eyebrows really stand out. If your hair is fair, choose either a brow powder or pencil that’s a shade lighter than your hair colour. For dark hair, choose one that’s a shade darker. Gently sweep the product over the brow hair and set using a clear eyebrow gel.

FINANCE HOW TO HOLIDAY FOR LESS IN 2013 As winter draws to a close, conversations about where to go for summer holidays are on the increase and the difference between what we can afford and what we would ideally like often represents something of a discrepancy. However, there are steps which can be taken to bridge the gap and help us afford a summer holiday which may otherwise be financially out of reach. Book Early or Book Late As far as saving money is concerned, there are two choices on the table and they are booking either late or early. Whether you book far ahead using low-cost airlines and advance bookings for accommodation or snag a last-minute bargain from a package holiday company, either of these approaches can work wonders for your budget. The key is to decide which suits you best and to plan your holiday around that. Indecisiveness will cost you money, so take the time to make a clean decision on your strategy.

rather than just turning up and paying for what you find. You really will save a fortune. Travel Light Airlines these days charge a great deal for excess baggage. This is especially true for the low-cost airlines and this represents another area where some advance planning can save you cash. Take some time to put together a packing list which will make the most efficient and effective use of space so you don’t have to take any extra or unnecessary items that will bump up your budget.

For advance accommodation bookings, websites such as holidaylettings.co.uk are fantastic and when b o o k i n g f l i g h t s , t r y s k y s c a n n e r. n e t o r travel.kelkoo.co.uk to track down the cheapest ones. If you’re flexible about both when and where to go and are just looking to find a great deal, then companies such as markwarner.co.uk, kuoni.co.uk and wandotravel.com all offer fantastic higher-end packages for less money when you book at the last minute.

Be Prepared to Travel Out Of Season While summer may be a mere figment of our imagination here in the UK, other countries do see sunny weather in May and June as well as into September and October. July and August are peak seasons for UK holidaymakers so if you’re not bound by school holidays, travel either earlier or later in the year to avoid peak season and its associated costs.

Plan Your Budget While it’s a nice idea to lounge around in the luxury of a five-star hotel, your accommodation is really only a place to sleep and store your luggage. This is a good example of how stripping some aspects down to the bare necessities can save you money. Do some research into the restaurants and other holiday expenditures in the area you’re visiting to track down ways to eat, sleep, drink and sightsee for less money

Consider a House Exchange A house exchange is a great way to get some decent accommodation at a very minimal cost. This is especially true if you have a family as exchanging a nice home in the UK can go a long way when travelling to countries where things are a bit more affordable. Websites such as homeexchange.com are trusted, reputable and have been running for a great deal of time.

Northwood - Guaranteed Income Scheme Northwood, pioneers of The Platinum Guaranteed Income Scheme for landlords are celebrating the third anniversary of the Bearsden branch opening their doors for business. Barry Dunlop, branch director puts their success down to Northwood’s innovative approach to the lettings market in reaching the significant milestone. The Platinum Scheme was launched over 10 years ago and offers sole or multiple landlords from all walks of life guaranteed rental income whether the property is occupied or vacant or even if the tenant doesn’t pay the rent. In additional Northwood provide tenants with safe, well managed accommodation. Barry believes that it is the Northwood “safety blanket” that has attracted thousands of landlords and tenants to the Bearsden branch and has been the driving force behind their success. Barry tells us “There is no shortage of letting agents in the Glasgow area, I knew competition would be fierce so had to offer something to my customers that they wouldn’t get elsewhere. The Northwood Platinum Scheme has proven to be a no brainer to landlords, especially those with multiple properties who can’t risk their properties sitting empty or those landlords who wish to spread the risk and minimise their exposure, which in turn has enabled them to add

more properties to their portfolios. Although Northwood is a nationwide franchise business, branches are run independently and as such have a personable feel. We genuinely enjoy being part of the local community and that, coupled with the unique Platinum scheme, I believe has been the recipe for success.” If you are looking to rent your property or for somewhere to call home, then contact Northwood Bearsden on 0141 942 2200 or email northglasgow@northwooduk.com and join the thousands of landlords and tenants that are enjoying the unique benefits that Northwood have to offer.

MOTORS JAGUAR XJ AWD

Jaguar has introduced a clever all-wheel drive set-up for its luxury XJ - we head to Canada to try it out. Jaguar’s star is rising fast. Sales across the world are booming, especially in growth markets like China where sales are up a staggering 84 per cent this year. It’s a similar pretty picture in the US and even in the troubled European markets the prestige brand is still up 20 per cent. Jaguar Land Rover’s global brand director John Edwards attributes the success to the Indian company Tata taking over the company in 2008. “I look back to the days of BMW and Ford ownership and think of them as foster parents,” he said. “They had their own parameters of what we could and couldn’t do and we had to live by those rules.” But since Tata took over, the manufacturer has been able to set its own rules once again and Edwards thinks it’s this that has helped the Jaguar and Land Rover brands flourish.

“When Tata took over it was like we became 18 - we could make up our own rules. We have a careful guardian watching over us but we can come up with our own plans and go our own way. That’s liberating. It’s opened our eyes to the long term.” What is the AWD XJ? It’s an all-wheel drive version of Jaguar’s luxury limo, the XJ. Using a part mechanical, part electric set-up Jaguar’s engineers have created a clever four-wheel drive system for markets where cold weather is the norm, like the car’s launch location, Canada. The system allows 100 per cent of the power to go to the front or rear wheels, depending on where the grip is needed. The good news is that no driving characteristics are lost during normal conditions as just five per cent of the power is sent to the front wheels.

What’s under the bonnet The highlight is the new 3.0-litre supercharged petrol V6. Producing 335bhp and 450Nm of torque it hits 60mph in 6.1 seconds, achieves a top speed of 155mph and returns 28.8mpg. It’s a corker of a unit and mated to the eight-seed automatic it’s incredibly smooth. What’s the kit like? It’s plentiful. Leather upholstery, a frankly sensational Meridian sound system, Bluetooth, cruise control; in fact pretty much everything you’d want and more comes as standard. Any rivals? The biggest rivals come with four-ringed badges on the bonnet. Audi has always made a big deal about its Quattro models, as the firm’s four-wheel drive system is one of their biggest selling points. With that in mind the Audi S8 would be the Jag’s biggest rival. Is it any good? It’s brilliant. Jaguar took us to Canada to test the system in the snow and I’ve never felt as safe on the slippery stuff. However, it’s worth noting that these AWD Jaguars aren’t due to come to the UK. Sales of four wheel drive saloons are small, says the manufacturer,

and it doesn’t warrant the development costs, but a spokesman did tell AOL Cars that it hasn’t been ruled out completely. By James Baggott, editor of Car Dealer Magazine (CarDealerMag.co.uk) THE VERDICT It’s a shame they aren’t coming to the UK as they are very accomplished and with the weather we’ve been having recently, they’d make wise buys. However, there is a slim chance we’ll see the technology here and it’s always nice to see a success story for British car manufacturing elsewhere around the globe. Our exercises aim to induce a state of ’relaxed alertness’ - the optimum frame of mind for easy learning and memory retention (also know as ‘the alpha state’ or ‘the zone’). YogaBellies exercises encourage the creation of new neural pathways and connections between the two hemispheres of the brain. In laymans terms, we reach the parts other activities cannot reach! Childhood Health Meditation has been scientifically proven to increase immunity. In Holland, people are given cheaper health insurance if they practise meditation! Yoga helps to tone the muscles of the body so reducing the chance of childhood obesity and stress related behavioural problems. Improved Behaviour Stress is the main cause of challenging behaviour. When stress is released through the combination of our Little Angels and Angel Bear techniques, children experience the best of themselves. Meditation creates a 'feel good' effect and helps to create a positive outlook on life.

GARDENING

KITCHENS FOR LIVING

SEED SOWING ON THE CHEAP

It’s the time of year when you can easily produce great plants without breaking the bank. If you want your garden full of colour, interest, perfume and perhaps even tasty crops, there’s no doubt that the least expensive way to do it is to raise your plants from seed. But what can be done to ensure the results in the garden are just as impressive? Start with a little self-restraint. Whether from catalogues or at the garden centre, it’s all too easy to buy enough flower seed to fill a tennis court when you have an average-sized garden, or enough veg seed for a family twice the size of your own. Make a list of what you actually need and put a limit on how many un-planned purchases you’ll allow yourself. Think about sharing. Each packet of seed often contains tens or even hundreds of seeds, so why not agree to swap a few with friends and relatives. This will not only save you money, but will also maximise the range of plants you can grow without increasing your outlay. Don’t be tempted to sow too many seeds at one time. By sowing little and often you’ll maximise flower time of

annual flowers and cropping time for vegetables and herbs. It also means that if the conditions are not right for germination on one occasion, all is not lost. Don’t forget that you may not need to buy what you want. Some plants can be reliably raised from seed collected from your own garden and don’t forget to ask friends and neighbours too. Make sure you only collect from healthy plants however and make sure they are ready and ripe seed harvested too early will not be fully mature and won’t germinate. Some seeds, especially those labelled as ‘F1’, will produce flowers whose seeds will not ‘come true’ - this means that the offspring will not be the same as the original plant and will often be less productive. As well as ensuring the seed is ripe, try to harvest it when the plants and the weather are dry, remove any bits of plant debris that are attached to the seed and allow the seed to dry off naturally. Letting them become too warm or too cold can soon kill off seeds. If you can’t sow the seeds straight away, make sure you store them, well labelled, in a cool, dry place. Old film containers or tightly sealed lunch boxes work well, especially if you pop a sachet or two of silica gel into the containers. Store them in the veg box of your fridge.

A small heated or even un-heated propagator can often end up saving you money as you can reliably raise a far wider range of plants from seed. There are many types available now, but make sure you choose one which is sturdily built and has proper ventilation in the clear plastic lid, otherwise seedlings may die on hot days. We stock some of the lovely UK-made Stewart propagators at www.pippagreenwood.com including a simple window sill propagator which, unlike many others, fits perfectly on most window sills without protruding.

and over the next few weeks, you could get some great cuttings from summer favourites such as fuchsias for virtually no cost at all. They’ll be flowering later this year too. Rhubarb crowns benefit from division every five or so years. March and April are generally the best months to do this. My favourite rhubarb, ‘Valentine’ has been grown from lovely crowns in a friend’s father’s garden. By Pippa Greenwood

Seeds do best if not sown too closely, and by sowing thinly you’ll also save yourself time and money. Wider spacing makes for less thinning out but if you do have to thin out a bit, remember that most seedlings will perform well if looked after properly. Many herbaceous perennials can successfully be divided into several new plants. Indeed most herbaceous plants do better when occasionally divided as the plant does not become so congested and you can dispose of the grotty bits and plant the good sections into fresh soil.

Visit www.pippagreenwood.com and sign up for ‘Grow Your Own with Pippa Greenwood’ where you can choose from a fantastic selection of vegetables for planting AND receive an email each week telling you all you need to know to ensure great results from just £29. You can also sign up for Pippa’s newsletter and receive a free ebook on organic gardening, and buy Nemaslug and other garden products.

Many plants are also easily propagated from cuttings,

TECH GUIDE HEAD FOR THE HILLS

Gadgets that make the great outdoors even greater Technology isn’t just something you use at home - it can be handy when you’re out and about too, even if your idea of out and about means going far off the beaten track. One of the most useful kinds of outdoor technology is GPS, the satellite system that can work out where we are and help us find where we want to go. There are all kinds of dedicated GPS receivers, ranging from cheaper devices such as Garmin’s £100 eTrex 10 to more expensive navigators such as Magellan’s Explorist 710, which currently costs around £350. You don’t necessarily need to invest in stand-alone GPS kit, however, especially now that smartphones and tablets can run very accurate mapping apps although if you’re taking a phone or tablet into the wilds, onto a boat or anywhere else nature can destroy it, it’s a very good idea to invest in some protection. You can spend ridiculous sums on all-weather protection, but cases such as Griffin’s Survivor (around £25 for phones, £29 for tablets) - something Griffin admits is “ridiculously over-engineered” - wraps your device in

military-spec protection for a very reasonable price. It isn’t pretty, but it’s tough - and that’s what really matters here. Technology has even made its way into the humble torch, which these days boasts LED illumination and innovative designs. Nite Ize’s BugLit LED (around £13) has low, high and strobe modes, is visible from a mile away and has rubber feet that you can twist to attach to almost anything, while head-mounted LED lights range in price from around £35 to well over £100. Petzl’s Nao Headtorch (£135) is a bit over the top for the odd walk in the woods, but for serious running and other sports its sensor ensures a uniform level of brightness irrespective of how light or dark conditions become. The most famous outdoors gadget is probably the Swiss Army Knife with its array of tools, but these days you’re more likely to carry a Leatherman or one of its many imitators. With prices ranging from around £30 to £100 for originals and considerably less for clones, the range offers all-in-one devices with tools such as pliers, knives, saws, bottle and can openers, wire cutters,

screwdrivers and even scissors. If you’re planning to be outside for a long time, you’ll need to eat - and gadgets can help you with that too. Jetboil’s Zip Stove (£75) is a gas stove given a hightech twist: its heat exchanger means it can boil half a litre in just over two minutes, and its neoprene jacket keeps things warmer for longer. Meanwhile the BioLite CampStove (£150) takes the humble campfire into the 21st century: as it burns twigs, bark or pinecones it generates electricity, which powers a fan, which fans the flames for better heat efficiency and less smoke and there’s enough power left over to recharge your lights, phone or MP3 player. If you need to recharge gadgets but don’t fancy lugging a stove around, no matter how portable, you might be better off with a monkey - and by monkey we mean a Powermonkey, such as the Powermonkey Discovery. Charge it before you go, and when your phone or other digital device runs out of puff the Powermonkey can recharge it twice if it’s an iPhone and three to four times if it’s a standard mobile phone. Expect to pay around £45.

BOOKS CREATURE COMFORTS

‘Hang spring cleaning!’ cries Mole in Kenneth Grahame’s The Wind in the Willows. The critters are emerging from hibernation, and so are we. We’ve picked a selection of the best novels where animals are calling the shots. What better way to welcome in the warmer weather, than with some tales from the riverbank… and beyond?

War Horse Michael Morpurgo Based on the true story of a horse named ‘Warrior’, War Horse follows the tale of Joey, a young mount who is sold to the cavalry for service in the First World War and the attempts of his previous owner Albert to bring him home safely. But Albert isn’t old enough to enlist and so sets off under his own steam to try and find his beloved Joey. It’s an amazing story of bravery and friendship, set against the bloodiest of backdrops and you can’t help but gallop alongside the intrepid pair.

Watership Down Richard Adams Fiver can sense impending doom. Something very bad is coming to the rabbit warren and fleeing is the only way to save the clan. His brother Hazel knows that Fiver is never wrong and so they embark on the journey of a lifetime to find sanctuary at Watership Down. Crammed full of amazing rabbit folklore, myths, legends and even their own language of ‘Lapine’, we become totally immersed in Fiver and Hazel’s world, carried along on this amazing and perilous journey across southern England. Is that ‘Bright Eyes’ I can hear?

Charlotte’s Web E.B. White Wilbur really is ‘some pig’ and it’s up to a spider named Charlotte to tell the world. Bashful and whimsical Wilbur is horrified to learn that he’s facing the chop. His human protector, Fern, might not be able to save him all on her own and it looks like it’s up to the barn’s resident arachnid to save his bacon. Can Charlotte convince the farmer that Wilbur really is worth hanging onto; how can a spider be that persuasive? Ok, so the clue is in the title but this is a thoroughly charming tale that will have you laying off the sausages, and letting the cobwebs hang around a bit longer, way after you’ve put the book down.

White Fang Jack London Set in Canada during the gold rush at the end of the 1800s, White Fang is the story of a half dog-half wolf hybrid puppy and his attempts to find his place in the world. It’s an epic story of survival, with White Fang struggling against the violent backdrop of the Yukon Territory and then the equally menacing and threatening life that awaits him as he is adopted by American Indian Grey Beaver and attempts to live as a domesticated canine. White Fang’s new life is just as brutal, as he fails to be accepted by other young dogs and so reverts to being the ‘lone wolf’, detached and isolated in the frozen wastelands.
