MUSIC NEW RELEASES

Radiohead - King of Limbs The King of Limbs cuts their full-length form down to a concise eight tracks and 37 minutes. It’s the bands shortest-ever album with the announcement - a Valentine's present to set hearts, minds and the interweb a-flutter. There is much here that will please the 'Head faithful, who will delight in the claustrophobic likes of Morning Mr Magpie and Little By Little. The King of Limbs is another great album from Britains most consistently brilliant band.

Green Day - Awesome as F**k Awesome as F**k is composed of tracks recorded during the band's 2009-2010 world tour in support of their eighth studio album 21st Century Breakdown. Green Day recorded every show on the 21st Century Breakdown tour. When it concluded, the band members sifted through the audio to deliver the best performances from their shows around the world. The band's explosive performances and captivating energy from the tour have been captured in their new live album and DVD . The footage on the bonus DVD was shot at the band's show in Tokyo, Japan. The package includes Green Day's biggest hits and fan favorites.

Foo Fighters - Wasting Light 'Wasting Light' is the seventh studio album from US rockers Foo Fighters, following up 2007's 'Echoes, Silence, Patience And Grace. The album was recorded entirely on analog tape in the garage of Grohl’s home in California’s San Fernando Valley. The no computers/no software backto-basics approach has resulted in arguably the strongest effort of the band’s 15-year-plus career and has produced the awesome sound of a band massively rejuvenated.

AT THE CINEMA THE COMPANY MEN

John Wells' debut tale about downsizing and executive greed isn't quite the cutting social commentary it sets out to be, but you have to give it points for trying: it's a portrait of an American corporate culture so devoid of human values and compassion towards the people who are steamrollered by it. Ben Affleck riding high on the success of last year's The Town, plays Bobby Walker, a mid-level manager who gives his life to megacorp GTX for twelve years before falling victim to redundancy, quickly followed by company veteran Phil Woodward (Cooper) - 60 years old and fearful of ever finding another position - and their old boss Gene McClary (Jones). Convinced that he'll quickly find an equivalent position, Bobby is in denial about his predicament, continuing to shell out for golf club fees and pay for dry-cleaning while the mortgage falls behind, because his belief in the need to 'look successful' is unshakable. But as time passes and Bobby's self-esteem plummets when he realises the corporate powers-that-be aren't

beating down his door to hire him after all, he resorts to taking a job with his construction-worker brother-in-law, Jack (Costner), who offers him a lifeline in return for manual labour. While the movie admirably tries to show the embarrassment faced by each of the characters as their worlds fall apart, it might be hard for your average moviegoer to sympathise with these high-flyers whose Porsches are in peril, who can't afford their kids' Ivy League school fees, and who spent everything they made without making provisions for the future. Admittedly, they're hard to root for. It would have been very easy for The Company Men to slip into sentimentality, but John Wells mostly manages to avoid it. It's ultimately a movie about what it means to be a man and provider in these tough economic times, and the emotions that come into play as a result when offered an alternative to the life the characters are used to. If nothing else, it shows that the corporate world that so many willingly hand over control of their lives to is never really your friend.

TRAVEL SUNSET ON EVEREST

You have to earn your first view of the mighty Everest range. From the Lukla airstrip, a short flight from Kathmandu, it takes a day and a half, trekking through pine forests, past lodges framed in dahlias and rhododendrons, across dizzying bridges and up the long steep spur of the Namche Hill. Now and then, you flatten yourself against the cliff face to let pack animals and porters scrape past. Far below, the foaming waters of the Bhote Kosi roar through an invisible gorge. At last, the pretty Sherpa town of Namche Bazaar appears, clinging to the very edge of the precipice, all pastel roofs and frilly awnings, prayer flags wavering like giant plumes and stepped alleyways where men carve Buddhist scriptures on the boulders and trekkers bargain for turquoise and Tibetan rugs. At 3340 metres, in the Everest National Park, Namche is the place to acclimatise for a day or two and enjoy glorious

mountain views, here the holy summit of Khumbila, there the fluted walls of Thamserku or the snowfields of Kongde and on the horizon, the dark windswept cone of Everest. Spring is the best time for rhododendrons, autumn for clear views. From Namche, Bazaar, it is a fairly easy stretch to Tengboche, the most sacred monastery in the Khumbu region, perched all alone on a wooded ridge. Boy monks scrub their laundry at the gate, chanting drifts from the temple, punctuated by cymbals and drums, and the twin peaks of Ama Dablam rise hauntingly, so close you could almost touch them. Beyond, the land is bleak and you pass only a few hamlets with tiny potato fields and yak dung drying for fuel on stone walls. Sometimes, wild Himalayan goats bound on the slopes and pheasants in iridescent rainbow colours peck on the edge of the trail.

17

Onto the forlorn village of Dingboche then Lobuche, past myriad stone chortens lined up on the pass, each one a shrine to someone who died in these parts. Now it is high time to eat garlic soup to thin the blood and fill up on energy food, pancakes, potato bread, vegetable rolls the size of a family pie. After a week of toiling up and down slopes and one last scramble over a moraine, anyone reasonably fit can reach Gorak Shep, the original base camp at over 5000 metres, now with a few lodges, tucked in a moonscape of tortured land and ice with gaping crevasses and the great cascade of the Khumbu Icefall. Lhotse, Nuptse, Pumori, Choyu, mountains rise in a m a g n i f i c e n t amphitheatre across the Tibetan border, but Everest remains stubbornly out of sight, hidden by a lower but closer ridge.

So, to set eyes on the panorama of a lifetime, you have to climb even higher and tackle the seemingly easy but breath-taking, knee-jerking Kalapatar, the Black Rock above Gorak Shep, towering at 5623 metres. Slowly, Everest appears above Nuptse, rising higher and higher, and when the sun dips in the west, the whole mountain rumbles and groans as huge blocks of ice crash down the slopes. All around the peaks come to life, shimmering pink and gold in the dying light. Suddenly, sharp as a knife, darkness falls right across the land but for a long time, on the roof of the world, E v e r e s t continues to glow, a lonely beacon in a starlit sky.

Specialising in storage solutions, display cabinets, home entertainment units and much more all using sustainably sourced timber and MDF products and with a spray booth facility they can achieve a professional factory finish.

The workshop is designed to manage all joinery and carpentry requirements and they welcome all enquires from existing tradesmen to make a job easier for them.

Bishopbriggs Directory: The Local Directory at the heart of the community

“I never knew so many businesses existed within the area.”

between the two directories of 25,000 homes throughout East Dunbartonshire and surrounding areas.

This remark has been made time and time again in relation to the Bishopbriggs Directory. Since April 2006 the Bishopbriggs Directory has gone from just an idea to firmly establishing itself as the magazine for the local area. Starting off with just 2000 copies, the directory has expanded over the 4 years to now cover 12,500 homes throughout Bishopbriggs, Robroyston, Auchinairn, Colston and Torrance. Containing a mixture of editorials, adverts and articles, as well as local information and events, the Bishopbriggs Directory regularly receives positive feedback from the residents and advertisers alike.

Step Out of the Box…

Truly Local Local residents like to support local businesses: local businesses need the support of local residents. The vast majority of our advertisers live, work or have connections within our distribution area. Many of these businesses don’t have a ‘shop front’ - they’re small independents who use a home office, and Bishopbriggs Directory is one of the few affordable ways they can promote their business to a local audience. By using them you are truly supporting your local community. A sister directory covering Bearsden & Milngavie started in March 2007 which gives total coverage

… and get noticed. Adverts are visible and never lost on a page, even if people are skim reading. There are never more than four adverts on a page and there are limited advertisers within each business category, to ensure that no-one becomes “lost” in a long list of competitors. Editorial features are available, if you want to tell readers about your business in more detail. We also offer leaflet drops along with the directory.

Shelf Life The Bishopbriggs Directory has excellent shelf life, the relevance of the editorial and advertising content, as well as local information, means it is in constant use. Residents keep it as a reference point until they get the next issue, thereby giving advertisers immediate access when their services are required. This is really important because although some people may require services immediately, most will not, but will subconsciously retain the names of adverts they find eye-catching and notice often. This is why repetitive advertising usually yields the best results: it keeps your name prominent and at the forefront of peoples minds. If you think that advertising in either the Bishopbriggs Directory or Bearsden & Milngavie Directory could benefit your company then please call either Scott or Natalie on 0141 945 4210.

What our advertisers say................. “Brilliant! We have seen a dramatic increase in business since advertising in the directories. They get delivered when they should and where they should, unlike some other “mags” that we have used in the past. The professional image the directory delivers benefits every existing or potential customers.” Noel Daly P & N Bathrooms

“We have been advertising in the Bishopbriggs Directory now for about three years and have had consistent results from our advert. Due to the custom gained we have no need to advertise anywhere else and can highly recommend any local business to advertise in the Bishopbriggs Directory.” Fiona & Stephen Taylor Pit Stop Barbers “Last year we spent a large percentage of our advertising budget on well known publications such as Yellow Pages with mediocre results but in comparison, the budget spent on both the Bishopbriggs and the Bearsden & Milngavie Directory proved invaluable consistently producing more local enquires than any other of the larger nationwide publications. It remains our favourite way to generate valued local customers. There are many imitators of this style of local magazine advertising which have sprung up recently, but Scott and Natalie have the original formula that works with the publication and its results are underpinned with their professional creativity and good old fashioned but necessary hard work. ” Iain Penman Penman Architectural Plans

“I have been advertising with the Bishopbriggs Directory since the first issue and I am pleased to say that I have had a large return on my investment. Scott & Natalie are efficient, creative and professional and the publication is the ideal medium for the clientele I seek. I will continue to advertise in this proven publication and it has great potential for any business owner in the area.” Brian Rule B. Rule Monoblock Specialists “For us, the Bishopbriggs D i r e c t o r y, i s a n important part of our marketing plans. It allows a local company to reach local customers in need of our services – something we should all be doing in the current climate. When we ask customers how they got our contact details, they consistently say that they saw our advert in the Directory. I would have no hesitation in recommending the Bishopbriggs Directory to any local business.” Darren Nichol pckwikfix

TECH GUIDE GADGETS TO TAKE WITH YOU WHEN YOUR OUT AND ABOUT After a pretty terrible winter, the longer days and warmer temperatures mean most of us can’t wait to get out of the house - and technology is happy to come with us. Whether you’re an explorer or just fancy listening to your iPod in the garden, there are plenty of high-tech ways to enjoy the great outdoors.

GPS One of the most interesting kinds of outdoor technology is GPS, the global positioning system that tells your satnav where you are. Portable GPS units such as Garmin’s Etrex H (around £70) enable a new kind of sport, called Geocaching. It’s a kind of electronic treasure hunt: on sites such as Geocaching.com you can discover coordinates of interesting things or secret stashes. Plug the co-ordinates into your portable GPS system and it tells you how to get there. It’s a great way to discover hidden historical gems or just really interesting walks that others have created for you. If you like the sound of geocaching and you own a smartphone there are several GPS-enabled smartphone apps, so for example iPhone users can pick up Groundspeak’s Geocaching for just £5.99

RECORD EXPERIENCE If you’d like to record the rough and tumble of your outdoor adventures, the GoPro Helmet Hero camera (£129 from Wilkinson.co.uk) can be mounted on a cycling helmet or other outdoor kit for handsfree snapping. There are also plenty of rugged cameras that can handle lumps and bumps, bashes and splashes: Kodak’s PlaySport camcorder (around £94) and Toshiba’s Camileo BW10 can both shoot HD video, and they’re waterproof to 2m (Toshiba) and 3m (Kodak), making them immune to splashes and rain.

POWER One of the problems with exploring the great outdoors is that there aren’t many power sockets - and some gadgets can run out of power pretty quickly. Despite the UK’s dire weather the sun pumps out enough power to make solar chargers a sensible option, and firms such as Power Traveller (www.powertraveller.com) offer everything from solarpowered phone chargers (from about £19) and gadget power supplies (from £29) to the £140 Solargorilla, which is powerful enough to charge laptop computers. Unfortunately that kind of power requires a fairly big solar panel, and the Solargorilla does look rather like a George Foreman grill. If you’d rather enjoy the outdoors in a more relaxed way, technology can help there too. Solar powered speakers (around £40 from NigelsEcostore.com) enable you to take your music with you, while the rechargeable Ion iPA03 Block Rocker (£159 from Play.com) is loud enough to stun passing birds. Alternatively, a pair of AQSound wireless speakers (£89.95 from Superfi.co.uk) enable you to transmit music from your hi-fi or other home audio system and listen to it outside without having to take any kit out with you

RELAX You can even get an outdoor TV: sites such as Proof Vision (www.proofvision.co.uk) will happily sell you a TV designed for outdoor use, although inevitably such sets are pricey: expect to pay around £820 for a 19-inch model. They’re clever, though, and they enable you to watch EastEnders while robots get on with the chores: the Robomow RL550 robotic lawnmower (£1,099 from Greenfingers.com) will mow the lawn while you relax.

KITCHENS FOR LIVING

EARLY RETIREMENT - WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

Although research shows that, surprisingly, most people are actually quite happy in their jobs that doesn’t mean that given half a chance many of us wouldn’t take an early retirement. But leaving work before ‘official’ retirement age isn’t as simple as packing up your desk and heading for the golf course. When considering early retirement the first thing that will come to mind is the effect on your finances. Obviously the government isn’t going to roll over and give you a couple of extra years’ state pension, so

what are you entitled to and how can you make the most of your money when you’re no longer supported by a full-time wage? As things stand men are entitled to draw state pension at 65, women at 60. However, between 2010 and 2020 women will reach pensionable age at 65 until 2024 when both men and women will need to reach 68 before drawing a state pension.

To advertise call Scott or Natalie on 0141 945 4210 or email: info@sbdirectory.co.uk

31

Likewise, the earliest one is entitled to draw a company or personal pension is 50, rising to 55 in 2010. Serious illness with a life expectancy of less than a year is the only situation in which your pension can be drawn early – 100% in a lump sum for a single person, 50% for those married

longer time. In addition, final salary schemes, based on how many years you have worked, will be less too. Pension schemes differ and indeed some may make allowances for retirements due to ill health or redundancy, so be sure to check your policies carefully.

Retiring early may also affect your state pension entitlement. Why? Simply because while working you’re building up entitlement through paying money to the taxman. So what can you do to ensure you get the maximum from your retirement fund without spending any longer than you have to behind a desk? If you’re under 60, voluntary National Insurance contributions can be made while part time or casual workers can also add to their NIC record. Likewise men aged between 60 and 65 may be entitled to contribution credits. Speak to your local tax office to get good advice on how to make the most of your state pension.

To be sure to get the most from early retirement trace entitlements from past jobs which you may have forgotten about, where possible buy additional years from a final salary scheme, increase your contributions to existing pension schemes and use tax-friendly savings such as ISAs to boost your income and give you the lucrative and relaxing retirement you’ve always dreamed of.

Personal or company pensions will also be affected by early entitlements – you will have saved less money which needs to fund you, in theory, for a

INTERIORS KITCHENS

What makes a good-looking, functional kitchen? Careful planning is the answer - plus a little bit of lateral thinking… These days, kitchens aren’t just for cooking in, or even for eating; they’re for socialising, doing homework, painting, reading, chatting, catching up with the accounts, watching TV or simply hanging out. So how do you go about designing a space that really works for you? First, assess exactly what you need from the kitchen. The panel on the right will give you a good start. Next, do plenty of research read everything about kitchens you can get your hands on, and visit every showroom within reach. It really is the best way to establish what styles you like, and what you can afford. Then, before you get bogged down with the detail, think about the space as a whole. If your kitchen is on the small size and you’re planning on investing in it, it might be worth, at this stage, considering either amalgamating it with an adjacent room or extending. If that’s not possible, can you enlarge a doorway or knock through a ‘hatch’ to give a feeling of extra space, and better sight lines to what’s going on elsewhere in the house? Perhaps you can create more room by moving the washing machine into the garage or under the stairs, or by fitting a fold-down dining table? Anything you can do in which to create a larger floor area will help. Next: layout. Plan it with the utmost care to ensure that the room is easy to use and comfortable to be in. You don’t want to have to walk right across the kitchen to put the crockery away, tripping over the dog and the child practising headstands on the way. Nor do you want to have to manoeuvre around a dining table every time you need to get from the cooker to the sink. In technical terms, experts recommend a ‘work triangle’ between the cooker, sink and fridge (in practice, this doesn’t always work, but aim to leave

Designing your kitchen? Ask yourself these questions first… • Who will use the room, how often, and how many at a time? • How will it be used - for semiprofessional cooking, regular family meals or the occasional microwave dinner? And what about other activities homework, watching TV, doing the washing or ironing? • Do you like using high-tech appliances? What wiring and plug sockets will be required? Will you keep small appliances out on worktops, or hidden in cupboards? • How much storage do you need, and of what type? For cupboards, do you prefer solid or glass doors, or maybe lots of open shelves? Will you have some unfitted elements, such as a dresser or sideboard? And would you prefer built-in or free-standing appliances? • What about worktops - wood, stainless steel, composite, stone or laminate? And flooring - ceramic or stone, brick, rubber, wood, cork, vinyl or lino? Collect as many samples as you can, and lay them out together to give an idea of the overall effect.

uninterrupted space between the areas you use more frequently). An island unit is great for maximising space, but needs to be well designed within one step of the other worktops, not so deep that you can’t reach across it and, ideally, positioned so that the cook can see what else is going on in the room. In addition, room to cook in the way you want and enough cupboards and shelves to store everything tidily but accessibly are vital, while even seemingly small things matter a lot, like providing an area on which to dump shopping bags before unpacking, or ensuring that the bin is close to the chopping board. Ultimately, of course, what defines a really great kitchen is much more than a set of guidelines. Avoid fashion fads, invest in quality and do your planning but, above

HOME IMPROVEMENTS FLOORING When you choose new flooring take some time thinking and planning before you buy. Decide what fits your lifestyle and taste. The style of flooring you select depends on many considerations. There are so many different flooring options available that sometimes it can get a bit confusing. A floor covering you choose for a kitchen will not necessarily be suitable for the living room. The most important aspect of your choice is what traffic does the area have? You need a floor covering that doesn’t show wear, will be comfortable and easy to maintain. Welltrodden areas such as

hallways need a more durable flooring than, for example, a guest room carpet. The bathroom floor needs to be waterproof. Vinyl tiles or linoleum, warmed up with a rug or two, is ideal. Wooden or laminate floors look stylish and are easy to clean, but can be slippery, and while stone tiles look attractive, they can be cold. Carpet is by far the most popular choice and gives an enormous range of textures, colours and styles. Unless you are skilled in doing so, don’t be tempted to lay the floor yourself. For a professional finish, it’s well worth paying someone to fit it.

MOTORS THE MOST PROFITABLE CARS Car companies turn over billions of pounds every year and bank millions in profits but which cars are the most profitable? It’s a question we’ve been pondering for some time. All car manufacturers can flog a car, but what makes the difference between a bumper profit margin and a tiny one? Well, we asked a host of industry experts, professors and insiders to help us come up with this list. They told us cutting costs and maximising returns in the automotive world is all about sharing expertise and platforms do that and car manufacturers can dramatically increase their profits. Here are some of the cars that our experts believe are real cash cows for their makers.

McLaren MP4-12C One of the shock cars to emerge from our research was the new McLaren. Although development costs are high, the actual car is relatively inexpensive to make in relation to the high retail price. Our experts said the carbon chassis could be the cheapest to produce ever while many physical components have been replaced by more cost-effective electronics. If they sell the numbers forecast at between £160-170k it could be one of the most profitable cars ever! Range Rover Sport The Range Rover Sport benefits from all factors that make a model profitable: It’s based on an existing chassis (Defender) which keeps build costs low. It’s sold for a premium with lots of added extras. And it’s been kept on sale for a long period of time without a major redesign. All these add up to a holy grail in terms of profitability.

BMW 3-Series It’s the salesman’s mile-muncher, but its premium price and relatively cheap production costs mark the 3-Series out as a winner for the marque. Our experts said it was mostly down to excellent cost control, the fact cars are often highly specified and usually sold for a premium over similar-sized cars like the Ford Mondeo.

VW Golf Described by our experts as ‘the daddy’ of platform sharing, VW isn’t one of the most profitable makers without good reason! The Golf is responsible for two million units a year and currently provides underpinnings for a huge array of Seat, Audi, Skoda and other VW models. Many are sold for a premium but cost no more to make, adding a healthy balance to VW’s bottom line every year. Aston Martin Cygnet Ok, we know this hasn’t arrived yet, but the baby Aston has the potential to be a real profit centre for the maker.

Essentially rebadging a To y o t a i Q and charging £30k-plus for it and that’s b e f o r e buyers have shelled out on extras which could spell happy times for the marque. However, despite its potential, our experts warned this would only be possible if buyers like it… Ford Transit It’s not just cars that add substantially to a manufacturer’s bottom lines vans do too! The Ford Transit is sold in markets around the world and our experts believe it is one of the most profitable vehicles on sale in Europe. Low production costs and decent volumes help keep the cash flowing for the Blue Oval.

FITNESS BEGINNERS GUIDE TO RUNNING

If you’re tired of paying out for gym memberships but never having the energy or willpower to go, or you can’t be bothered to do your old workout DVD yet again, then there is another option open to you. What’s more, it doesn’t cost a penny. Say the word “running” to most people and you’ll probably see a look of horror sweep across their face, followed by a comment protesting their complete inability to run even the shortest distance. But remember, you won’t be doing a marathon on day one. The key to becoming a runner is taking a gradual stepby-step approach.

Once mastered, the ability to jog is a great asset and allows you to effectively exercise any place you may be. When done correctly it increases the density of your bones and can significantly improve your health and fitness. However, getting past the initial mental barrier of starting to run is arguably the most difficult part of the sport. The key is to start off gently, then progress gradually and before you know it you’ll be running 10k without thinking. To help you get started here is a simple guide aimed at complete beginners. So what are you waiting for? Get those running shoes on and give it a go.

To advertise call Scott or Natalie on 0141 945 4210 or email: info@sbdirectory.co.uk

51

Step One: You have to walk before you can run. Let’s be honest, if you can’t walk a circuit of your local park without getting seriously out of breath you’re not going to be able to run round it. So to get your fitness levels up, start walking for an amount of time that feels comfortable – anywhere from 10 to 30 minutes.

Step Five: In the beginning try to aim for at least a couple of sessions a week and build up to three or four times as you feel more comfortable. These goals should be fairly attainable depending on your current fitness. The key is to let your body dictate your progress.

Step Two: Once you can walk for 30 minutes easily, sprinkle one to two-minute running intervals into your walking. As time goes on, make the running intervals longer and the time you spend walking shorter, until you are running for 30 minutes straight.

After a few weeks you should have an idea if this is the sport for you. If so, then invest in a pair of good running shoes, as these will help soften the impact on your joints and support your ankles. There are countless magazines and running websites that will be able to offer you advice on which shoes to buy. The key to becoming a good runner is to listen to your body. Joggers are among the most stubborn of all sportsmen for ignoring aches and pains and causing more significant damage as a result.

Step Three: The first goal is to set out a maximum time period or distance to cover. This should be something you can realistically perform a few times a week – maybe in your lunch hour, before or after work. Then build toward achieving that. Step Four: There is no need to run with pain. Instead, back off from the training and examine what is going wrong. Remember when jogging that the rate or perceived exertion should not go past 15 out of 20 – 5/20 is easy, 10/20 is comfortable, 15/20 is hard and 20/20 is collapse.

Burnbank - A home from home for your pet The Burnbank Pet Hotel in Queenzieburn has recently changed hands in December 2010 and is now a family business run by Lisa McCabe and her Dad James Kerr, offering the best overnight accommodation in the area for cats and dogs. They also offer a day care service for both cats and dogs and are open all year round, which is uncommon for boarding establishments. They aim to provide the best quality service you could hope for. Lisa explains “As pet owners ourselves, we understand the anxiety which comes with leaving your feline and canine friends when you go on holiday, as after all they are part of the family! We offer comfortable surroundings and lots of cuddles and attention, therefore a typical home from home experience.” The cattery has room for 40 cats per night, all comfortably set out with beds, blankets and toys. The cattery is also well heated, therefore keeping them toasty and warm during the winter months and the dog kennels can accommodate 50 dogs per night, all with their own little room, which includes bed, blanket and chew toys. Each one is heated, therefore keeping our 4 legged friends nice and warm.

Before moving into the pet hotel, Lisa and Jim ran a successful dog walking business (Stardust Dog Walking), which now runs hand in hand with the pet hotel and therefore provides a full dog walking service, offering 1 hour and 2 hour walks along with the day care service. Lisa and James are having an Easter Egg Hunt on April 16th to meet with people from the local community and invite you to come along and have a look around. They are also offering a 10% discount for multiple animals from the same household. Why not pop along and see what they can offer for your furry friends.

GOLF TIP TEE BOX DRILLS - By Daryn Cochrane PGA Professional at Esporta Dougalston For a drill that addresses power and consistency off the tee (or any long shot for that matter). Hit it a Mile Driving the golf ball with today’s new drivers is arguably the most enjoyable part of the game. There is hardly an amateur golfer on the planet that wouldn’t love a few extra meters on their drive. Here are four basic check points that could add yards to your tee shots! Tee the ball Higher - If you want to get the proper angle into the ball and put the right kind of spin on the ball, be sure to tee it up (half the ball above the driver at address).

focus on keeping your right arm straight and extending through the ball well after impact. Hopefully these tips will add valued yards to your game! Take the club back low and slow – Far too often when amateurs swing a driver too hard, it starts with a quick backswing and no width. LOW and SLOW is the key. Turn your weight behind the ball – don’t get stuck on your front foot, make sure when you swing, you can feel your weight turning onto you back thigh and foot. Extension through the shot – Don’t collapse too early,

RECIPE ASPARAGUS BRUSCHETTA

INGREDIENTS 12 fresh asparagus spears, trimmed 6 thin slices crusty bread (such as sour dough) 6 tbsp good quality olive oil 1 large garlic clove, halved 225g (8oz) goats’ cheese Handful of rocket leaves Salt and freshly ground METHOD Half fill a large frying pan with water and bring to the boil. Add the asparagus spears and simmer for 3-4 minutes until just tender. Drain well and refresh under cold running water.

Enjoy the wonderful flavour of fresh British asparagus with these deliciously simple topped toasts. To make them more substantial add some flaked smoked mackerel or ruffles of Parma ham.

Brush the slices of bread on both sides with some of the olive oil. Place the slices on a hot cast-iron griddle pan and cook for 1-2 minutes on each side until just crisp and lightly charred in places. If you don’t have a griddle pan then simply grill the toasts. Rub the cut garlic cloves all over the hot toasts (this imparts a mild garlic flavour to the toasts). Spread the goats’ cheese over the toasts. Arrange the asparagus spears on top of the cheese and add a few rocket leaves to each. Drizzle over the rest of the olive oil. Season with salt and freshly ground black pepper and serve immediately.

GARDENING SPRING CLEAN YOUR GARDEN

With the flowers blooming and new leaves appearing on the trees, April is a time when most of us like to have a bit of a tidy-up and revitalise the garden for summertime. Whether you’re preparing for the growing season, or simply wanting to improve the look of your garden, we have some great ideas to give your green space a good spring clean. Tools of the trade Before you tackle your garden, have a quick sort through your tools. Give them a clean, decide what needs to be replaced and scrub off any rust, before rubbing on a little vegetable oil to keep them in tip-top condition. Check your mower and hedge trimmer to see if any blades need sharpening or replacing and throw away any old chemicals cluttering up your shelves, which may even present a health risk. Throw out the old plants Start by removing dead annuals or plants showing any sign of disease, and pull up invading weeds - but don’t add them to your compost bin. Any bulbs which have finished flowering will need deadheading, but don’t remove the leaves as they will provide the energy for next year’s growth. Some shrubby plants with woody stems, such as buddleia and lavender, will need to be pruned in order for new blooms to appear on the freshly-cut branches. Clean your decking Barbeque season is just around the corner and if you are doing a bit of entertaining, you’ll want your decking

to scrub up well. Start by picking a dry day and go over the wood with a stiff broom or multi-purpose pressure washer. Now that the deck is free from any clutter and dirt you can focus on cleaning the wood using a dedicated product, finishing with a good rinse to remove all traces of the chemicals. Allow the deck to dry completely before replacing the furniture and other items. Patios, paths and rough edges A little touching up here can make the world of difference. Start by trimming overhanging grass from the edges of your patio, pathways and borders, and check to see if any stepping stones have sunk below ground height if they have, raise them so that loose soil won’t cover them when it rains. Brush off any old leaves from your patio before giving it the once-over with a pressure washer. If you don’t mind a bit of graft, scrub with a specialist path and patio cleaner. Finally, pull out any invasive weeds from the gaps between the patio stones, and lift up encroaching moss. Bring your grass up to scratch If all the trudging around in mud hasn’t done your garden any favours, it’s well worth investing in a lawn fertiliser, which will make your grass lovely, thick and green as well as preventing weeds and moss from forming. If you have a real problem with the latter, find a feeding product which incorporates weed-killer. At this time of year, aeration is also important: you don’t need any flashy equipment, by piercing holes with a pitchfork about 4 inches deep evenly across areas where the

lawn is suffering, you’ll improve drainage which will do wonders for the grass Be house proud Don’t neglect the exterior of your house. Wash your windows, and if they have wooden frames, you may want to give them a fresh lick of paint. Clear out dead leaves from the guttering and check that nothing is blocking the soakaways. Throw away any old children’s toys or clutter, and remove cobwebs. Treat garden furniture To prolong the life of your garden furniture, it will need a yearly service to remove any rust spots and prevent against decay. Your wooden furniture will benefit from a good rub down and coating of varnish or teak oil. To remove rust spots, scrape away with a steel wool pad, and use a dry paintbrush to remove particles left on the surface. Finally, apply a waterproof sealer, in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions. Prepare the soil If you plan to grow some fruit and veg, purchase a soiltesting kit from your local garden centre. Once you know what kind of earth you’re dealing with, you can

Superb Organic Cleaning of Carpets, Curtains, Upholstery and Leather

improve its quality by adding various nutrients. Beds and vegetable patches will benefit from the removal of stones, twigs and plant debris, a good dig, and the addition of some organic matter such as rotted-down horse manure and a layer of mulch. Give your pond some life Start by getting rid of dead leaves, fallen branches and old plants, but don’t throw these instead, try replanting in new soil. Next, remove the pump, replace the filter and check everything still works properly. If you have any paving slabs, give them a bit of a scrub and tidy back any overhanging plants. Note however that if you have fish, try not to cause too much of a disturbance as they are still in winter mode. Get growing The weather is warming up and now is the ideal time to cultivate some seedlings. Start off with some tomatoes, sunflowers, salad leaves and chillies, and place them somewhere warm, ready for the sun when summer comes. Clean all your old pots with a scrubbing brush, re-plant your window boxes and, finally, sit back and enjoy!
