MUSIC NEW RELEASES

Coldplay - Mylo Xyloto Coldplay's fifth studio album Mylo Xyloto, the follow up to 2008's Viva La Vida, will be released on October 24th. The album was produced by longterm collaborators Markus Dravs and Rik Simpson as well as the band's front of house engineer Daniel Green, with what is described as "enoxification". Although the band have not yet revealed a track listing, the album will definitely including the hit "Every Teardrop Is a Waterfall" and the second single "Paradise," and is very likely to include the songs "Us Against the World," "Charlie Brown," "Hurts Like Heaven" and "Major Minus," all of which have been performed regularly at recent Coldplay gigs.

Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds Is the first collection of new studio material from the outspoken English musician and singer/songwriter since leaving Oasis in 2009. Set for release on October 14th, and features the talents of former Oasis keyboard player Mike Rowe, Lemon Trees drummer Jeremy Stacey, and percussionist Lenny Castro. The song which has been cherry picked from the album to take on this job is ‘If I Had a Gun‘. which is a reminder of what made us fall in love with his songs in the first place, and it looks like it might just happen all over again. If there are more tracks like this on the album then we are in for quite a treat...

Hard-Fi - Killer Sounds After a three year break, Hard-Fi are back. With previous tracks "Suburban Nights", "Hard to Beat", "Cash Machine", and "Living For The Weekend" already under their wings, they’re sure to break the mould once again with their boisterous up-tempo tunes. The band’s vibrant new album (partly recorded in Los Angeles and in Staines’ Cherry Lips studios) has been coproduced by frontman, Richard Archer, with the help of some highly-praised names: Stuart Price (The Killers, Madonna), Grey Kurstin (Lily Allen) and Alan Moulder (Yeah Yeah Yeahs, The Killers). The positivity bouncing out of Killer Sounds will make Hard-Fi truly a band who are Hard To Beat this year.

AT THE CINEMA THE INBETWEENERS

Starring: Simon Bird, Joe Thomas, James Buckley, Blake Harrison, Lydia Rose Bewley, Laura Haddock Director: Ben Palmer Rating: 15 In this feature length adaptation of the hit Channel 4 comedy, our four heroes Will (Bird), Simon (Thomas), Neil (Harrison) and Jay (Buckley) are at the end of their final year at Rudge Park Comprehensive and off to Greece in search of 'sex, booze, sex, booze and sex', thanks to Jay's inheritance. Of course, if nothing went wrong it would all be too simple. As it turns out, Simon's ex Carli (Emily Head) is on holiday at the same spot, which rather puts the kybosh on his trying to forget her. But their boozefuelled holiday begins to look up when they meet four girls in a nightclub.

Kevin and Perry, for example), largely due to the fact that the original team behind the original programme have full control here. The pace and tone that made the original so funny and successful have made it across nicely to the big screen version, with the same excellent performances from all four leads that we've come to know and love throughout their time on the small screen. A great script, consistent laugh-rate and some really, really crude sight gags all come together for a laugh-out-loud, hilariously funny effort. It's the most hotly-anticipated movie of the year so far, and definitely won't disappoint fans of the show. Highly recommended.

Thankfully, The Inbetweeners hasn't gone the way of some of the less successful movie adaptations (think To advertise call Scott or Natalie on 0141 945 4210 or email: info@sbdirectory.co.uk

BOOKS THE BEST BOOKS FOR HALLOWEEN It’s that one night of the year where we all prepare to be spooked and scared, donning our most frightening costumes and relaying stories of ghosts, ghouls and werewolves. Here, we’ve selected some of the best books to get all the family in the mood for some spine-tingling fun and games.

The Haunting of Hill House by Shirley Jackson A fragile young woman, Eleanor, escapes her oppressive existence to stay with three other guests at old Hill House. Soon becoming the victim of a number of strange occurrences, Eleanor struggles to decipher whether she is terrified of the house, or comforted by it in all its weirdness. This dark, psychological tale is bound to set the cogs whirring.

The Haunting of Toby Jugg by Dennis Wheatley Hailed as ‘The Prince of Thriller Writers’, this is Wheatley’s most chilling read which begins with a dark, sinister something trying desperately to get into Toby Jugg’s bedroom window. The wounded Battle of Britain pilot soon embarks upon a struggle with a supernatural force which will stay with the reader long after the last page is turned.

Dracula by Bram Stoker It’s a classic horror story, but despite being over a century old, none of the terror is lost in the ageing of this brilliant tale. Bram Stoker has created the ultimate fearsome character in Dracula, a vampire whose power and influence lead to the manipulation of a number of individuals who tend to meet a rather gruesome end. Sinister, dark and incredibly chilling, this is the ultimate vampire read.

The Turn of the Screw by Henry James Hailed as one of the most sinister reads out there, Henry James’ classic tale is of a governess who is sent to care for two newly orphaned children. The story takes a twisted tale when ghosts begin to appear who seem to have much more in common with the two youngsters than they will admit.

TRAVEL ST LUCIA

At the southern end of the Lesser Antilles, in the Caribbean islands, St Lucia is just a drop in the ocean, 27 by 14 miles, with spectacular mountains, lush rainforest and fertile valleys fringed by sandy beaches. Tossed 14 times between French and English colonial powers, the island has thrown both cultures into the melting pot with a generous helping of African folklore, a little East Indian spice and vestiges of early Amerindian settlers. English is the official language but Creole, a mix of African dialects and French, is coming back, in tune with the stirring rhythm of reggae and calypso.

Pleasure boats sail along the coast looking out for sunfish, dolphins and whales, past the lovely Marigot Bay featured in Dr Doolittle, the fabulous diving sites, hidden coves and sleepy villages strung with fishing nets and laundry drying on the beach. On a Friday night, when the beat of Afro-Caribbean steel bands echo along the shore, the village of Anse la Raye stages a gigantic fish fry al fresco, a lively family event where all sorts of delicacies bubble in the pots or sizzle in the pans - seafood, sweet potatoes, corn on the cob, rice, callaloo soup and more.

St Lucia is tourist-hungry but eco-friendly and most developments have been limited to the north-west around Rodney Bay. There are fine sands and palm trees, a gleaming marina and out on the hilly peninsula, known as Pigeon Island, fabulous views over the

TOP 10 TIPS FOR IMPROVING FUEL EFFICIENCY

We’ve all watched helplessly as the cost of fuel has rocketed over the last few years. Does anyone remember when it cost less than £1 per litre? Believe it or not, according to the AA, it was only a little more than two years ago in May 2009. Whilst we can’t do anything to beat the increases, there are ways we can minimise its impact. Here are our top 10 tips for improving fuel efficiency. 1. Check the internet. Sites like www.petrolprices.com are invaluable as they’ll not only tell you where to find the cheapest petrol near your postcode, they’ll also tell you the highest, lowest and average prices in your area. 2. Drive more efficiently. The experts tell us that it’s possible to cut 60% off your fuel bills just by driving more carefully. Don’t ‘warm up’ the engine, accelerate gradually (try to stay under 3000 revs), avoid sharp braking, drive in the correct gear and at your car’s optimum speed. Stay aware of your

positioning and the road conditions ahead to avoid sudden movement. 3. Don’t fill your tank. Remember that fuel weighs a lot so find a balance between not having to go to the petrol station that often but not carrying a full tank either, rather aiming for between one half and three quarters.

To advertise call Scott or Natalie on 0141 945 4210 or email: info@sbdirectory.co.uk

23

4. Streamline your car. Again, weight is a huge factor in fuel efficiency. Don’t keep a buggy, golf clubs or other unnecessary items in the car. Take off roof racks which add wind resistance and force your engine to work harder. 5. Keep a regular eye on your tyre pressure. Check your car’s manual to find out what the levels should be and ensure they don’t dip lower than this. This will mean your car needs less oomph to keep it moving. 6. Turn off the air conditioning. Many cars have air conditioning on by default and it does use an incredible amount of fuel so make sure it’s turned off unless you really need it. Similarly, use your demisters and heated windscreens sparingly. However if it’s really hot do use your air conditioning because driving with open windows causes drag and is even less cost effective.

8. Choose where you fill up. Again, check out www.petrolprices.com and plan ahead. Fill up at a supermarket station when you’re doing your regular shop, particularly if they have a petrol promotion running and if you have a loyalty card attached to the supermarket. Don’t be caught out with an empty tank when your only option is a motorway service station. 9. Combine short trips into one longer one. Cold starts are inefficient so plan ahead and try to do more than one errand when you go out. 10. Last but not least, turn the engine off If stuck in a jam. The general rule of thumb is if you think you’re going to be stationary for more than three minutes, it’s worth switching off.

7. Avoid super fuels. Unless you have a highly tuned performance car, the difference isn’t noticeable enough to warrant the extra cost.

TECH GUIDE LET THERE BE LIGHT Winter’s double whammy of darkness and bad weather is enough to bring anybody down, so why not brighten the mood - and everything else - with some high-tech lighting? From lights that make your gadgets work in the dark to remote controlled candles and lights designed to cheer you up, there’s no shortage of gadget firms with very bright ideas. The arrival of LED (Light Emitting Diode) bulbs has transformed lighting. LEDs can be made impossibly small, they use tiny amounts of energy compared to their incandescent predecessors and they last for an extremely long time - and because of that they’re absolutely everywhere. Fancy reading your Amazon Kindle in the dark? Amazon will happily sell you a (pricey) case with a pop-out LED light that draws its power from your e-reader. Prefer a fan that creates concentric coloured rings as it spins? Search for “Mini LED Fan” and you’ll find lots. Require a torch that doubles as a Swiss Army Knife and fits in your purse or wallet? Allow us to introduce the Victorinox RED Swiss Card Lite (pictured here), although you should probably leave that one at home if you’re planning to go through airport security. LEDs can deliver serious benefits too. If you have down-lighters in your home, replacing the bulbs with LEDs will slash your electricity bills - although you’ll notice a dramatic difference in the way your room looks, because LEDs tend to give out a very white light compared to the yellowish glow of incandescent or halogen bulbs; if you have a bike, accessories such as the Nite Ize Spokelit bike light makes you easier to see by turning your wheel into a glowing green circle. You’ll find LED gadgets in all kinds of bike accessories: not just bike lights, but also helmet lights and task lights for urgent repair jobs. Some LED gadgets are just strange. The Drivemocion LED car sign enables you to broadcast messages to other drivers, with a choice of smiling and winking faces, THANKS, BACK OFF or SORRY. You can’t customise it to display your own messages,

although that’s probably for the best. You can also buy LED-powered, remote controlled candles (pictured below), which embed a flickering LED inside a real wax candle to deliver a surprisingly lifelike glow. The remote control enables you to adjust the LED’s brightness, to switch between flickering light and a continuous glow, and to enable the timer mode that switches the candles off after four or eight hours. If the winter months bring you down, a SAD lamp might help. Designed to address Seasonal Affective Disorder, LED SAD Lamps start at around £50 and deliver bright summerstyle light, which numerous studies suggest can lift the mood of people who are perfectly cheery in Spring and Summer but find their mood changing with the seasons. Not all SAD lamps are created equal, however, so it may be worth reading reviews on sites such as lighttherapyreviews.co.uk to find out which lamp best suits your need. LED bulbs are beginning to appear in reading lamps too, with clip-on desk lamps costing around £15 and anglepoisestyle ones ranging from under £20 to well over £300 depending on where you shop and whether you want an expensive designer one or a cheap and cheerful plastic job. Whether you go for a little light that attaches to your book or an enormous metal free-standing lamp, you’ll find that LEDs are particularly good for reading: the crisp white light from LED bulbs delivers excellent contrast, which is ideal for reading black text on a light background.

The Listening Post Hearing Matters Advice Column I am delighted to announce the launch of a local hearing care service in Bishopbriggs, within the practice of Apple Opticians. We are also starting this advice column which will appear in future issues of the directory. My first advice is to be hearing aware. Some nine million people in UK are deaf or hard of hearing and only a fraction of this number take positive action. Sometimes the progress of the hearing loss is so slow that the sufferer isn’t even aware of its onset.

Do you often ask people to repeat themselves? Do you find you need the TV turned up louder than others find comfortable? Do you have trouble hearing in a café, pub or restaurant? Do you often comment that it would be okay If only people wouldn’t mumble?

If you answer yes to any of these you may be experiencing the onset of hearing loss. If you suspect that this is the case for you or for a member of your family I would advise you to have a screening test at our new practice, this would take only a few minutes and is free of charge. It includes a physical examination of your ear, which could point out a the simple fact that it may just be ear wax. Thank you for reading the first advice column, I hope you found it helpful. For further service please see the details on our advert below.

LIVING TURN YOUR DREAMS INTO JOB SATISFACTION

What did you want to be when you were growing up? If you fancied becoming an astronaut, you aren't likely to have fulfilled your dreams. However, if, like most children, you dreamed of becoming a teacher, footballer, police officer, vet, fireman, hairdresser, nurse, dancer, doctor or driver, you are far more likely to achieve your dream job. In a study of primary school children carried out by Jobcentre Plus, it was revealed that boys are most likely to aspire to sporting or "protection" professions and girls to caring or nurturing professions. One in ten boys dreams of being a footballer and seven per cent a police officer or fireman. For girls, 13 per cent would like to become a teacher and nine per cent a nurse. If you are looking to change your career, whatever your age and experience, Jobcentre Plus advisers can help you take a fresh look at how your childhood dreams can translate into career reality. They can help you assess your interests and hobbies and look at job opportunities

that relate to these. Jobcentre Plus adviser Jenni Vardy says: "Many of us have childhood dreams of what we want to be when we grow up, often related to our interests, hobbies or natural skills. However, as we reach adulthood these aspirations often get forgotten or appear unattainable. "When looking for work it is often worth considering hobbies and interests, as we are more likely to be good at something we enjoy and which comes naturally. There are often lots of opportunities which can incorporate hobbies or interests." Vardy advises: "If football is your passion, coaching training courses can be available at local football clubs, in particular for jobseekers aged 18-24, or opportunities working as a groundsperson or in hospitality at a football club. "If you're interested in getting into teaching, one way

might be to offer to help out at your children's school or look into becoming a classroom assistant, which can lead to a qualification. “Those who aspire to be vets could start by trying voluntary work at their local RSPCA or animal sanctuary to see what it's like before looking for a job working with animals. Jobs could range from an administrator at a veterinary surgery to being a stablehand. There are lots of different options available; it's just a question of thinking laterally around where your interests lie.” Jobcentre Plus helped Ruth Jordan, aged 62, turn her love of cross-stitching and découpage into a successful business. Jordan said: "When my arthritic condition worsened, I took up cross-stitching and découpage as a hobby. Then I started to make greeting cards, which were very popular locally. My daughter, Catherine, suggested I could develop my interest into a small business and that's when I contacted personal adviser Ivan Wright at Broker North East, part of Jobcentre Plus, who helped me turn my hobby into a really successful business.” Vardy gives some tips on what to think about when

considering making your hobby your job or realising your childhood dreams. Ask yourself if a job already exists that involves your hobby, she says. It might be something that would require you to start your own business. Does the job you are thinking of require specific qualifications? If so, don't be put off. There are many opportunities to train or retrain to obtain these. If you don't have a specific hobby, think about what you enjoy doing in your spare time. If you like spending time helping out at your children's school, you could obtain a teaching qualification to work with children. If surfing the internet and computers are your thing, consider web design or IT. Talk your thoughts through with a friend or an adviser at the Jobcentre to sound out different ideas and work out how a new job would really fit in with your life and best suit your interests.

INTERIORS WARM UP FOR WINTER When long nights and frosty mornings make it feel as if winter is never going to end, it’s time to cosy up with a blazing fire, warm radiators or a welcoming stove. Katherine Sorrell’s ideas for overhauling your heating will help you make it through till next summer… There’s no doubt that we’re all going to be thinking carefully about how we heat our homes this coming winter and sensible measures such as good insulation, draught excluders and thermostats will help keep both costs and CO2 emissions down. But no matter how many extra jumpers we put on, there’s bound to come a time when we can’t do without some form of home heating. And since we’ve got to pay for it, we might as well make sure that it’s as efficient and attractive as possible. First: the traditional fireplace. Many of us have one and it’s usually a focal point of a living room despite the fact that open fires are shockingly poor heat producers, operating at around just 15-20% energy efficiency. If your fireplace as a whole is unappealing (whether or not you want to use the fire as a form of heating), you can usually update it relatively easily just by changing the surround, hearth and/or mantelpiece: altering the colours, materials and proportions really does make a world of difference. If you haven’t got a chimney, though, the good news is that you can still have a fire. Balanced flue gas fires require a gas supply and an outside wall on which to mount the fire, while powerflue (or fan flue) gas fires have the same requirements, and also need mains electricity. No outside wall? No problem. Electric fires can be used regardless of chimneys, flues and outside walls, and can look surprisingly attractive compared to the ghastly models of old. And some gas fires use a catalytic converter to turn combustion gases into harmless carbon dioxide, so no flue is required. Because no energy is lost through the flue, they are also 100% heat-efficient.

attention-grabbers: traditional styles have timeless appeal, while hole-in-the-wall or centrepiece versions fit wonderfully into a modern setting. And by burning wood from sustainable, local sources you’re not increasing your carbon emissions (for more information, go to www.nef.org.uk/logpile). Last, but not least, if you’ve got central heating, don’t forget your radiators. Are they giving off enough heat for the room? You can help prevent heat loss especially on an outside wall by fitting tin foil (or special radiator reflectors) behind them to reflect the heat back in. But if they’re simply not effective enough then consider replacing them with a more powerful version, perhaps in a dramatic modern style or in a classic column shape. They’re not cheap, but they are both practical and goodlooking, and will last you many long winters yet to come.

The big news in heating at the moment, however, is the wood-burning stove. In looks alone, they’re huge To advertise call Scott or Natalie on 0141 945 4210 or email: info@sbdirectory.co.uk

Dress your home for winter with layers of cosiness Throw down a deep pile rug to add extra softness and a sense of warmth underfoot. Swap sheer, pale, lightweight curtains or blinds for something heavier wool, tweed, velvet, even felt, denim or mohair. On sofas and armchairs, pile up cushions for a sense of cosy luxury and add a throw or two folded over the back: great for snuggling under. You could use a length of tweed edged with velvet ribbon, chunky knitting or crochet, fake fur or soft fleece. Replace pale bed linen with sheets or a duvet cover in a deeper shade. Add quilts, eiderdowns, bedcovers, throws and blankets. Feature walls may no longer be cutting edge, but they’re still good looking: paint one wall of a living room or bedroom in warm, boldly coloured emulsion it’s easy enough to paint over again if you get bored with it. GOLF TIP FINE TUNE YOUR TEMPO

Go from too fast or too slow to just right and watch your shots soar high, far and straight. This drill is for you if: · You both slice and hook, and you never know why · You make contact toward the heel or toe more than on the sweet spot · You don’t have a ‘go-to’ swing, especially when the pressure is on Few swing fundamentals are more overlooked than tempo (the consistency of the pace at which you swing your club). Tempo is a difficult concept to grasp – there’s more to it than swinging your club faster or slower. You need to feel it, in the same way that you developed your natural walking pace, you need to find your natural swing speed or your motion will lack the smooth, rhythmic feel associated with solid ball striking. Use this exercise to find perfect swing tempo: Tee up four balls in a row. Address the one closest to

you and hit it at 25 percent of your standard swing speed. Immediately, move to the next ball. This time, make a swing at 50 percent speed. Hit the third ball at 75 percent speed and the last at full throttle. Perform this drill a few times. Focus on the feel of the different speeds, and keep in mind that your goal is to not slow down or speed up your swing in order to hit your ball longer or straighter. Your objective with this drill is to become familiar with different tempos and to learn to coordinate the movement of your body and your club to produce solid contact at any tempo. That’s what creates consistently long and straight shots. You can’t stick to a single tempo for every swing. Every day on the course is different. Your body is different, your swing is different, and the course and weather are different. To play your best you must discover what tempo – faster or slower – will work for that day.

MOTORS BEST FIRST CARS Passing your driving test is one of the best feelings in the world but the joy of finally getting your licence can quickly disappear when it comes to finding a car. Astronomical insurance costs can put many models out of the reach of teenagers, but don’t despair too much there are options out there. You need to accept the fact that insurance is going to cost you more than the car, but you can help cut the price by taking a Pass Plus course or asking to be added to your parents’ policy as a named driver. That will mean talking to them first though… If that sounds too challenging there are new insurance schemes that place a black box in your car to monitor your driving style and charge you accordingly this can be a great way of cutting premiums. But what cars make sensible buys? Here, we have scoured the classifieds to hunt down a few options you may want to consider. Ford Ka from £300 Cheap to buy, run and fix and there’s thousands on the road to choose from. Even models with air conditioning and CD players can be had for under a grand, but keep an eye out for rust under the sills, behind the bumpers and around the fuel filler cap. And buy the latest one you can afford. Fiat Cinquecento from £400 Made famous by TV show The Inbetweeners, this little city car wasn’t Simon’s motor of choice without good reason. It’s extremely cheap to run and insurance won’t be too painful either. Don’t expect much in the way of equipment and remember these Fiats can be a little unreliable, so budget for repairs. Citroen C1 from £2,700 This Citroen is the sister car of the Peugeot 107 and Toyota Aygo, not much changes apart from the badge. It’s good to drive and being relatively new it’s one of the safest options. However, insurance will be a bit more expensive than others and you’ll be hard pressed to find one with air con. Fuel economy will make up for the lack of equipment, but they are still pricey. Toyota Yaris from £750 One of the most bulletproof models if you want to avoid running repairs, a Yaris is a sensible choice. They’re roomy inside and if you can stretch to a diesel variant, trips to fuel stations will be relatively infrequent. Insurance costs are surprisingly affordable and it’s a safe option, but prices can reflect that. To advertise call Scott or Natalie on 0141 945 4210 or email: info@sbdirectory.co.uk

47

Peugeot 106 from £300 They can be picked up for next to nothing and with a choice of engines and trims to suit most budgets, a 106 is a tempting option. Most are a bit basic, but they’re entertaining to drive and reasonably affordable to insure. However, they’re not known for their reliability so try and buy one with service history and have it checked over before handing over your cash.

Finally, a couple of tips if you’re buying your first car: Always take someone with you who knows what they’re looking at, even and don’t laugh if that means your parents. Have the car checked over by a mechanic too - it’s often worth half an hour’s labour in a garage to save you big bills. And for more expensive cars fork out for an HPI check to ensure it’s not stolen. Happy hunting!

BEAUTY

KITCHENS FOR LIVING

BUY BEAUTY FOR LESS As the country well and truly feels the financial pinch of the recession, there’s a lot of pressure on us to be careful with our money, to spend it wisely and to adapt to a less indulgent lifestyle. So buying those designer labelled beauty products complete with very large price tags - can become difficult to justify for those of us on a weekly budget. Yes, it’s hard to fight the allure of the brand and the promises that come with it, not to mention the sublime packaging and determined sales pitch from the assistant. We all have a tendency to think that if it’s designer and expensive, then it’s guaranteed to make our skin more youthful, our lips look fuller and our lashes appear longer. We reassure ourselves that the expense is, of course, worthwhile but in reality, are there other products that can transform us from plain to gorgeous, for half the cost? Is a healthy glow, flawless skin, luscious lashes and perfect pout only available if you buy into expensive top brands or is there an effective value for money alternative? Well, thanks to the new trend in budget beauty, a superb range of affordably priced buys are emerging. They might not be quite as exciting and glamorous as designer alternatives, but they do offer surprising results at pleasing prices. The once uninteresting ‘value’ ranges have been overhauled and replaced with ones that are far more likely to grab our attention and make us realise that these products can stand up well against the competition. After all, what makes a beauty product great is what it can do for you, not the name on the container. With supermarkets like Tesco leading the way with unbelievably cheap prices on cosmetics, these budget buys provide a great way for us to try out different or

fashion-forward make-up looks, that we usually wouldn’t want to invest a lot of money in. The cheap price tag makes experimenting fun, and a few pounds lost in an unsuitable lipstick is easy to live with, unlike the hefty credit card bill from the beauty counter of a top brand. And it isn’t just cosmetics that are available at bargain prices. Everyday essentials are great value too. If you love relaxing with expensive bath and body products then you won’t be disappointed. The Body Shop although slightly more expensive than some of the really cheap budget buys - is always the best for sumptuous, sweet smelling ranges that are perfect for pampering, cater for all needs and rival any designer fragrance.

Ø Although it is hard to deny that a lipstick clad with an iconic designer logo looks so much more sophisticated in any handbag than a budget alternative, when on the lips the two look equally effective. And of course, with what you save on a designer lipstick, you can invest in expanding your make-up bag, finding a new look that really suits you and a satisfaction in knowing that, even with all the new purchases, you are still saving money.

GARDENING AMAZING AUTUMN COLOUR By Pipa Greenwood Autumn colour has always had the ability to make me go weak at the knees. I love it....just as the temperatures are dropping and there’s too much potential for things to become dull, gloomy and miserable, your garden can develop a new potential to be positively glowing with fantastic foliage colour. If you’re looking to add some glorious golds, passion-filled purples, ravaging reds, yummy yellows or perhaps some outrageous oranges to your garden, then now is a perfect time to buy those autumn colour plants. Not only is autumn a great time to plant trees and shrubs, but if you buy the plant when it is showing its beautiful autumn colours, you’ll know exactly what you’re getting. If you want to indulge in a little planting for autumn colour on vertical surfaces such as walls, fences or arbours, there are several plants I’d suggest you consider. Vitis coignetiae a rampant grower, the heart-shaped leaves may measure up to 25-30cm across and their splendid scarlet and crimson colours are un-missable. This vine can be grown through large trees and over sturdier supports. The colours tend to be especially good if the soil is miserable or the root run restricted. Parthenocissus quinquefolia - more commonly known as the Virginia creeper, it’s another sizeable climber, and this also offers a good degree of selfclinging ability, so it can be used to clothe walls where you have not fixed up a support system. In autumn the leaves are numerous shades of scarlet, orange and red. It can grow taller than you want, so will ultimately need trimming if, say you grow it on a house wall, or else it will move on to the roof. Parthenocissus henryana - a relative of the Virginia creeper, but much more restrained. For much of the

year its divided leaves are a dark green to bronzy colour with pretty silvery white veining. In autumn they turn rich shades of red. If you are after a shrub or two then there is an even wider range to choose from. Fothergilla major or Witch Alder is a gorgeous smallish to medium-sized shrub that is covered with scented creamy white spiky flower clusters early in the year, before the leaves appear. Pale green for much of the year the foliage turns shades of yellow and orange in the autumn. Fothergilla needs a lime-free Amelanchier lamarckii, also known as the snowy mespilus or serviceberry, is a large shrub or small tree and produces lovely whitish blossom in spring (that is much longer lasting than the flowering cherries!) In spring the new leaves are a coppery colour, changing to bright green and then come the autumn it is one huge mass of fiery colours. Acers or maples are generally reliable autumn show stoppers, and for smaller gardens you find it hard to beat one of the Japanese maples with their stunning divided leaves turning rich purples, reds, oranges and yellows depending on exactly which one you have planted.

To advertise call Scott or Natalie on 0141 945 4210 or email: info@sbdirectory.co.uk

73

The Japanese maples also do well in large tubs, perfect for a sheltered back yard. Cotinus or smoke bush is a shrub with attractively rounded leaves that come in shades of green, pinkishorange or purple. Come the autumn they produce a bright display to be proud of. The fluffy seed heads that are left after flowering look just like little clouds or plumes of smoke….perfect with the bonfire effect of the leaves. It is a great time to choose plants for autumn colour, but if you’re not sure what’s available, treat yourself to a visit to an open garden, arboretum or park, and note down the names of what you like best. Planting at this time of year works well, but if your garden soil is waterlogged now, then wait a week or more until it is in better condition. If the soil is on the dry side, it will still need watering well, and the soil around the roots will need to be kept moist. Always check the ultimate or potential height and spread of trees or shrubs you’re considering…..there’s no use planting something that will out-grow its space in a couple of years time. Then sit back and enjoy your own bit of autumnal magic!
