MUSIC NEW RELEASES

Stereaophonics - Graffiti on the Train Stereophonics release their eagerly awaited new album ‘Graffiti On A Train' on their own Stylus Records label. In the past 15 years they’ve toured virtually all over the world, chalking up five UK Number One albums along the way. Graffiti on the Train feels relaxed, at terms with its place in the world and is clearly the work of a man and an outfit that's done the rock'n'roll thing and is now easing into the next step.

David Bowie - The Next Day One of Britains most celebrated, much cherished, original & iconic figures, David Bowie returns after a 10 year absence, with this brilliant new album “The Next Day”. In his absence he suffered a heart attack and kept such a low profile that fans despaired that he had effectively retired from music. But with the timing of an artist who built his career on subverting expectation, Bowie announced a new album on his birthday in January. The album actually lives up to expectations raised by his lengthy absence. It’s his most consistent and rewarding work since “Scary Monsters and Super Creeps” in 1980. He's still here, and he hasn't given up on us yet. Or, to quote the seventh song on the album, "If you can see me, I can see you”.

Ocean Colour Scene - Painting Not many bands get to make it this far so it is to be hugely applauded that Ocean Colour Scene release their landmark 10th studio album. The band is most famous in their homeland for riding the crest of the '90s Britpop wave, they have at least one bona-fide classic under their belt with 1996's Moseley Shoals, which spawned a few hit singles and they are also known for opening for the likes of Paul Weller and Oasis back in the day. The album is a representation of all that is great about British rock; anthems, heartfelt ballads and weird, left-of-middle psychedelic wig-outs. Quite simply, Painting is another great record from British pops most under-rated storytellers. As artistic statements go, it might just be their masterpiece.

AT THE CINEMA OZ - THE GREAT AND POWERFULL

This month UK audiences go bravely back to a world many believed there was little chance of re-visiting. Then again, great stories die hard, and not least when they're based on best-selling books and multi-million dollar box office classics.

perspective, the most recent(ish) releases have been TV movies (including both The Muppets and Tom and Jerry versions), along with Return To Oz, 1985's belated sequel to the instantly recognisable Doris Day outing of 1939.

Oz the Great and Powerful is just one in a number of titles that have arisen since The Wizard of Oz. What makes it interesting is the fact that Sam Raimi is directing, a chap who shot to notoriety with Evil Dead, before establishing himself as something of an international director-brand famed for a particularly sharp visual style, by way of the Spiderman trilogy.

The fact that Disney is responsible means there is yet more pressure on producers to rethink this much-loved story well. After all, last year's John Carter was an out and out disaster, so we need reassurance Walt's brand hasn't lost its edge. Interestingly, neither film could exist without early 20th century U.S. literature (Oz coming from L. Frank Baum's The Wonderful Wizard of Oz , first published in 1900, with Carter inspired by the character created by Edgar Rice Burroughs in 1912). But, needless to say, everyone involved in the forthcoming title will be hoping the similarities between the two features stop there.

More so, this new tale inspired by Dorothy's exploits in the strange Land of Oz, which arrived in cinemas on March 8th, is the first serious narrative to focus on the bizarre kingdom in decades. To put things in

he's in Oz, and the real adventure begins.

In terms of the plot itself there's no denying there is a distinct difference. In fact, 'Oz 2013' is unlike anything you're likely to see this year, not to mention earlier incarnations of the same idea. Here James Franco plays a magician called Oscar, who's an ambitious and mildly roguish type willing to do a few less than moral deeds in order to turn a quick buck. Embarking on a hot air balloon adventure in the somewhat selfish pursuit of fame and fortune he runs into a tornado, spinning its way through the Kansas dustbowl. Next thing you know

Waking up to find himself in a genuinely impressive CGI rendering of this infamous magical kingdom, our misguided protagonist gets to know three witches- Evanora (Rachel Weisz), Glinda (Michelle Williams), and Theodora (Mila Kunis)one of whom is, apparently, wicked. Cue Emerald Cities, Yellow Brick Roads, and some truly imaginative details that, whilst falling short of the precedent set by many other modern fairytales (such as the work of Guillermo Del Toro), make for a wholly immersive two hours of escapism as we explore strange locations, and watch the unlikely hero try to take on that evil sister in the hope of claiming his prize - all the gold in the Land. Fun, far fetched, but unarguably one to experience on the big screen.

WE ARE FAMILY

For kids, April means the Easter holidays. Time for enforced fun, ill-fated camping trips and long drives squished in the back of the car, with your siblings breathing in your face. We’ve picked some of the best books about family life and how to survive. Two weeks off…are we there yet?

Everybody Jam Ali Lewis The Dawson family is used to harsh climates and tough situations: they run a cattle station in Australia’s Northern Territory. Plagued by drought, this year’s ‘muster’ will be another battle with the elements. But there’s more to contend with than the outdoors this year. Eldest son Jonny has been killed but no one talks about it, 14 year old Sissy is pregnant after ‘rooting’ with an Aboriginal lad and there’s a new Pommie house girl who can’t even make toast. Told through the eyes of 13 year old Danny, it’s a story of a strong clan who overcome adversity and survive, way out in the outback.

Little Women Louisa May Alcott Never were there such devoted sisters…until you add domestic turmoil, death and boys into the mix. Amy, Beth, Jo and Meg are the March sisters growing up during the Civil War era. Jo doesn’t want to cut her hair off and Meg doesn’t want to be a governess, but you have to admit that Beth comes off worst! It’s an allAmerican classic and is a definite must-read for any teenage girl, whether you have sisters or not.

We Need to Talk About Kevin Lionel Shriver This is the shocking and disturbing story of a family torn apart when the eldest son carries out a massacre at his school. It’s powerfully told through a series of letters written by his mother, Eva to her husband Franklin as she tries to come to terms with the atrocities carried out by Kevin. It brings up all kinds of questions about nature versus nurture and how siblings and parents impact on each other’s lives. Throughout the book we can begin to piece together exactly what took place in the high school gym, but it still won’t prepare you for the startling conclusion. Quite simply, a brilliant thriller.

The Red House: Mark Haddon How do siblings become total strangers? Brought together by the death of their mother, Angela and her brother Richard have only really communicated through phone calls for the last decade or so. Now Richard has invited Angela and her growing brood to spend a week with them in deepest darkest Wales. The book flits between characters but once you’re into the rhythm of how these two families tick, it’s a great read that’s full of sibling-rivalry, trips and falls down memory lane and getting to know each other all over again.

TRAVEL HONG KONG ISLAND

HIGH RISE AND DRAGONS Sail on the old Star Ferry across Victoria Harbour, just an eight minute ride from the peninsula, and Hong Kong Island greets you with its 21st century skyline, here the zigzag patterns of the Bank of China Tower, there the sensuous curves of the Convention and Exhibition Centre or the Central Plaza rising to 78 floors, framed by verdant hills. Above these monoliths of concrete and glass, Victoria Peak looms undisturbed, like a grand old lady smiling at a mob of unruly children. At a cool, often misty, 1810 feet, the Peak has long attracted the elite who built luxury dwellings on its upper slopes laced with gardens and wooded trails. For most visitors, the Peak begins with a steep thrilling ride on the funicular, hauled up to Victoria Gap by a single cable. The summit is out of bounds, topped with telecom masts, but weather permitting, there are unrivalled views across the harbour to Kowloon, the New Territories and a few of the 260 outlying islands which are part of Hong Kong. At night, the city below is an

ocean of lights. With a density approaching 16,000 inhabitants per square mile, the main island is an eclectic mass of humanity. Executives in pin-striped suits, fortune tellers, revellers, manicured store assistants, families on their way to the Ocean Theme Park, shoppers, tourists, the city is for ever on the move, flooding every pavement and elevated walkway, buses, trams, ferries, taxis, underground and the mid-level stairs where a string of 20 escalators carry commuters down in the morning then switch uphill for the rest of the day. The aptly named ‘Central’ district on the north coast is the glittering seat of government, finance and upmarket shopping, its new architectural wonders jostling for space above the last colonial buildings. There are swanky boutiques and antique shops but affordable goods in the lanes and the Chinese Emporiums brimming with handicraft.

Tai Chi enthusiasts gather in Victoria Park, locals bargain for dried fish, snake bile and chopsticks and around the temples festooned in red lanterns and dragons, clouds of incense fill the air as they did long ago, giving Hong Kong its name of ‘fragrant harbour.’ Once dotted with its own incense mills, Aberdeen on the south coast has sprouted into high rise but retains a frenzied wet market and harbour where tyre-draped sampans weave past the ageing fishing fleet and the last houseboats strung with laundry. On the quayside, seafood lovers wait for the free ferry which will take them to glitzy floating restaurants, anchored on the edge of the typhoon shelter. Beyond Aberdeen, life moves at a gentler pace as week-enders relax on the lovely beaches of Deep Water or Repulse Bay or venture to the sleepy village of Shek O in the east. Cooled by sea breezes, Shek O marks the end of the Dragon Back’s Trail, a pleasant

trek along a ridge with stunning vistas of the interior country parks and South China Sea. True, Hong Kong Island thrives on banking and business but the old China survives, more discreet than on the peninsula, but coming into its own at festival time when brightly-decorated dragon boats compete in the traditional Stanley race, spurred on by drums and cheering crowds.

PETS THINKING BRINGING HOME A RESCUE DOG? TOP 10ABOUT TIPS FOR IMPROVING FUEL EFFICIENCY It is fantastic that so many people decide to give a home to a dog from one of the many re-homing shelters . BUT.... do you know a high percentage of these dogs are returned within the first few days/weeks. Your new dog is very likely feeling confused and anxious about his/her situation. Dogs like routine and order in their lives and when this disappears for whatever reason many dogs become frightened and it is this fear which almost always causes dogs to act out of character. If a dog is frightened its ears will flatten to its head ,its tail will go between its legs, sometimes it will growl and occasionally even snap. This does not mean it is a bad or difficult dog , just a mixed up and scared one! If you follow these simple tips, hopefully your dog will settle well and permanently into your home. 1.Do not over handle or crowd your new dog for the first few days. Give it a bit of peace and quiet to settle into its new environment. It can take up to a few months for some dogs to relax and accept their new family completely so don't rush things! On arrival home do not have lots of visitors round to see the new dog (I know you want to show off your dog but too much stimulation can be overwhelming for an already stressed dog.) Take your time and give your dog a period of adjustment to its new environment. 2.Try very hard not to overhandle (overpet) your dog for the first few days as this can frighten some dogs, especially the ones with a more nervous or timid temperament. Hard as it may seem it will really help your dog relax if you and any visitors completely ignore your dog when it is looking for attention......wait until it has calmed down and then call it over for petting. Do this for the first week or two and see the difference in your dog's behavior. Dogs understand ignoring, after all they practice it on us humans all the time!

3.Many dogs like to sleep in small dark spaces. That's why they like going under tables, beds even the duvet cover! Seriously consider getting a dog crate to give your dog a place to sleep, rest and get away from the household hubbub. The crate should be roomy enough for your dog to stand up, turn around and lie stretched out comfortably. 4.Dogs need leadership Try not to make the same mistake as many people and over love your dog and let it do exactly as it wants because you feel it sorry for it. Rescue dogs don't know they are rescue dogs all they want is to feel secure from day one. Yes of course give your dog lots of affection but also make some rules and boundaries and teach your dog some general obedience. Dogs without leadership become confused then unruly and disruptive and often frightened. A frightened dog is the one that can growl and sometimes nip, so you can end up going full circle! Sadly these are the dogs which often end up back in the re-homing centre. BUT if you follow some simple rules and treat your dog as a dog you should enjoy many happy years with your pet.

MOTORS PORSCHE CAYENNE GTS TOP 10 TIPS FOR IMPROVING FUEL EFFICIENCY

You want a 911, but need more space and would rather have the commanding view of the road a 4x4 offers. Is the Porsche Cayenne the answer? We find out… What is it? It’s a Cayenne - Porsche’s roughty toughty off-roaderbut one that’s had a dose of steroids and some glitter liberally applied to its bodywork. Slotting into the range between the V8 S and the Turbo, the GTS comes with more focus and power and some distinctive styling options.

What’s the kit like? Pretty impressive, but like all Porsches you’ll soon rack up Ford Fiesta-sized bills on the options. A communications pack costs £2,157, 21-inch black alloys are £1,513 and even the red paint will set you back £1,619. Our test car had a total of £13,760 worth of goodies…ouch.

What’s under the bonnet? A rather raucous 4.8-litre V8 that’s been uprated from 394bhp to 414bhp and boasts 515Nm of torque. Performance is far from the Turbo’s though; the GTS will hit 60mph in 5.7s and go on to 162mph. It sounds pretty special getting there though! Everything else has been on the sharpening block - the steering is crisper, the eight-speed gearbox shifts quicker, and the lowered ride height gives it an added edge on the road.

Any rivals? The ageing Range Rover Sport puts up a pretty good fight, but we’ve never tried a Rangie that sounds as good as this GTS. Audi will soon be at the party with its SQ models, but that’s yet to be applied to its Q7. For a left field there’s always the Infiniti Vettel Edition, but that’s very expensive in comparison. So, not much choice out there at the moment.

What’s our verdict? We like the GTS treatment given to most Porsches. The 997 911 really benefitted from the work over, and the Panamera GTS we tried after this Cayenne worked fantastically well too. However, the off-roader doesn’t feel quite right in this guise. It’s quick and sounds incredible, but feels like it’s pretending to be something that it’s not. by James Baggott, Editor of Car Dealer Magazine www.cardealermag.co.uk

Is it any good? Although it’s incredibly quick and sounds tremendous, it can feel a little bit stressed out at times. By that we mean it feels on edge, twitchy even - perhaps the added sharpness has given it a little too much bite. However, there’s no doubting it has real presence on the road - it’s just the styling might not suit all tastes.

Model: Porsche Cayenne GTS Price: £67, 147 Engine: 4.8-litre, petrol Power: 414 bhp, 515 Nm Max speed: 162 mph 0-60mph: 5.7s MPG (comb’d): 26.4 Emissions: 251g/km

TECH GUIDE NO APRIL FOOLS

ODD GADGETS THAT REALLY DO EXIST Every year, technology firms join in the April Fools fun so for example in recent years Google announced selfdriving racing cars, Toshiba pretended to make a 3D monocle and video site Animoto offered bark recognition for dogs. Not all odd-sounding technology items are fakes, though: there are some truly strange items and accessories out there. Some of the oddest items are related to smartphones and tablets, such as the iStuck mobile phone stand (£3) that looks like chewed bubblegum, the Knuckles iPhone case - designed to look like a knuckle duster - and the just-announced iPotty (£39), a child’s potty with a builtin iPad stand. The idea, apparently, is that letting children use iPads while on the potty will make toilet training a fun game. Other gadgets are more sensible, but rather odd looking - such as the iPhone SLR mount, which enables you to attach enormous SLR camera lenses to your phone. It might look like a novelty item, but the price says otherwise: at the current US exchange rate, it’s £156 plus shipping and tax, and of course that doesn’t

include the lenses. The mount is available for both Nikon and Canon lenses and promises to bring SLR effects such as variable depth of field to “the camera you carry with you every day”. Another odd-looking but fairly sensible gadget is the Handspresso Auto ESE, a portable espresso coffee maker designed for in-car use. It uses the Easy Serving Espresso pods you might have seen for ordinary domestic coffee makers, and it’s particularly handy for road warriors who’d rather not pay inflated prices for motorway service station coffees. At around £130 it isn’t cheap, but if you use it regularly it’ll soon pay for itself. You can buy odd things for your house too, and if you’re a musician or a fan of rock music you’ll appreciate the Marshall Fridge. From the outside it looks like the iconic Marshall amplifier stack, and it even uses authentic Marshall parts including the famous logo, fret cloth and brass-finished faceplate with knobs that go up to eleven, but inside it’s - yes! - a fridge. The manufacturer says it’s “the ultimate combination of rock and refrigeration”. Yours for £405.

Have you ever wished your fork could nag you about your eating? Good news if you have: the Hapifork (around £70) may look like an ordinary fork, but it’s stuffed with sensors that monitor how quickly you’re eating. It measures the number of times you put the fork in your mouth, the time between each serving and the total time you’ve spent eating, and vibrates and flashes if you’re eating too quickly. The data is then sent to your smartphone. For now the line-up doesn’t extend to other cutlery, but manufacturer HAPIlabs says a spoon is in development. The HAPIfork was one of several odd gadgets shown at this year’s Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, but it wasn’t the oddest: we saw GPS-enabled gadgets such as the TrakDot luggage locator (around £30 plus a £10 annual subscription), Nano Nails, which turn long fingernails into styluses for touchscreens (price tbc); the iMusic BodyRhythm, a music-powered massager that makes you look like you’re wearing a toilet seat around your neck (currently accepting pre-orders for $69, around £44), and the thoroughly odd Minime, which can create a phone case or a cuddly toy that includes a 3D rendering of your child’s face (or anybody else’s face). Expect to see Minime kiosks in shopping malls later this year.

FINANCE YOUR TOP 5 MONEY SAVING APPS The mobile application market represents a cultural shift for the human race. Smartphones are now the ultimate universal digital Swiss Army Knife for every possible facet of our lives and a broad cross section of money-saving utility is now in your pocket. We’re going to take a look at some of the best money-saving apps available for both Apple and Android devices. Skype | www.skype.com | Free These days, Skype is practically a household name but many overlook the mobile version of this brilliant Internet telephony software as a supremely useful money-saving tool. Encourage everybody you know to download Skype on their mobile device and you have suddenly significantly reduced the chances of ever using up all of your free minutes. For those of you who find yourselves with £10-£50 (or more) in excess fees, this simple app could save you hundreds in the long run. Voucher Cloud | http://www.vouchercloud.com | Free Most people are familiar with the idea that we’re now in a digital era of cutting coupons. Voucher Cloud is an app for all of the best digital offers. Firing it up will find you everything from free five-day passes to your local gym to discounts on driving lessons and reduced prices in restaurants. It’s worth taking the time to sit down and check the T&Cs so you know exactly what it is you’re signing up for. Spending a little time being thorough on the small print however will save you hundreds of pounds per year.

Ever found yourself in a shop whereby the little voice in your head is asking you whether you might find the item cheaper on the Internet or just round the corner? All that’s needed to answer the question is your smartphone device and a Wi-Fi or mobile Internet connection. Photograph the barcode using the on-board camera and it will recognise the item and then cross reference prices with department stores, a vast array of websites, including Ebay, and even local stores. It’s worth noting that the latter feature works best in larger towns and cities. It’s practically impossible to scan a barcode which is not recognised by this incredible app so scout for bargains and save money. Direct Debit Control Centre | http://www.directdebit.co.uk | Free There’s nothing worse than trying to stay on top of your finances, thinking you’re almost there and subsequently getting stung with excess overdraft fees for an unexpected direct debit. The Direct Debit Control Centre helps you keep on top of when your direct debits are leaving your account via its early warning system. It will save you money and give you peace of mind. iXpenseIt | http://www.fyimobileware.com | £2.99 So, what will you do with all this money saved? One small but wise investment would be to buy an app that helps you stay on top of your expenditure and few are better than iXpenseIt. There’s a lite version which can be downloaded for free so you can try before you buy. This is as good as mobile money management software gets and the app has won several awards including one from CNN Money Magazine.

INTERIORS CLEAN AND FRESH Clear the clutter, sort your stuff and make everything in your home spick and span your home will feel bright and revitalised, and so will you, says Katherine Sorrell Do you have clutter in your cupboards, or fur balls all over your floor? Does your fridge need defrosting, do your windows need washing and your sink require a good scrub? Are you closer to being the goddess of grime than the queen of clean? Spring sunshine is notorious for pointing out the flaws - whether they be major or minor - in your housework routine, and now could be the ideal time to don your apron, snap on your Marigolds and refresh your home from top to bottom. They call it spring cleaning, but in fact there’s no reason why you shouldn’t have a good clear-out, shake-down and wash-up at any time of the year. Or, if you really can’t bear the thought of tackling every room at once (and let’s face it, we’re not all so domestically inclined), you could divide it into manageable tasks, and spend perhaps an hour a week or else tackle one room at a time until your home feels truly transformed. Having decided to make a fresh start, where should you begin? The obvious place is with a good, old-fashioned tidy up, paying attention to all your tables, shelves, floors and other surfaces, inside kitchen and bathroom cupboards, bedroom wardrobes and chests of drawers, and anywhere else that mess has gradually accumulated. Once you have cleared the space, you are almost ready to begin. But not quite. Good preparation will, in the long run, really pay off. Make a list of what needs doing (this may be rather time-consuming, but will be worth it in the end) and allocate some time for each chore. Then dig out appropriate clothing. What to wear will depend on the task at hand, and the types of tools and cleaners you’ll be using, but should include an old shirt and trousers, and could also mean rubber gloves, sturdy shoes, a headscarf, overall or apron and a dust mask or

safety goggles. Next, assemble your equipment from brooms and scrubbing brushes to buckets and cloths. Having it all ready beforehand will save time and effort later. And the last piece of preparation is to find the cleaning products you’ll require, including an all-purpose household cleaner, washing-up liquid, furniture polish, nonchlorine bleach, anti-mildew tile and bath cleaner and window cleaner. Store them in a heavy-duty caddy with a handle.

To advertise call Scott or Natalie on 0141 945 4210 or email: info@sbdirectory.co.uk

39

At last, you’re ready to begin. Refer back to your list of what needs doing you’ll see it divides into five main areas: vacuuming, dusting, mopping/scrubbing, washing and wiping, and polishing. There will also be specific tasks which vary from room to room, such as turning mattresses, spot-cleaning upholstery, cleaning the oven, defrosting the fridge, descaling the shower head and beating rugs. Now is also a good time to sort out those less frequently required jobs such as steamcleaning the carpets or having the chimney swept. Before you embark, bear in mind the basic principles of cleaning: work from top to bottom (dust the light fitting before polishing the table beneath) and tackle dry before wet (vacuum before mopping, obviously). As you work, try to be organised, whether you work one room at a time, or one task at a time. Put some music on and really throw yourself into it. Once you start, you may well find that you enjoy the entire process far more than you ever thought you would. With a little forethought, preparation and organisation, spring cleaning can be a rewarding activity that will restore your home to its rightful place as a peaceful haven that is well-kept, tidy and gleamingly, squeaky clean.

FIVE OLD-FASHIONED CLEANING TIPS • Polish chrome taps with vinegar, a little baking soda on a damp cloth or a gentle rub of white toothpaste • To dust carved wooden furniture, put a dab of furniture cream on a damp cloth, and hold it over the bristles of a soft toothbrush you will be able to work your way into all the cracks and crevices • De-grease a vinyl floor (under the oven, for example) by rubbing with a halved lemon, then mop with an all-purpose cleaner • Spot-clean upholstery by gently rubbing in a little foamy shaving cream and removing with a clean, damp cloth • Beat a rug by hanging it over a washing line and using a tennis racket

LIVING DON'T SUFFER IN SILENCE Being able to hear is fundamental to our ability to communicate. If we can't hear, we can't respond to others nor speak clearly or judge our pitch - try talking to someone with headphones and they’ll shout back at you. But like most of our senses we take our hearing for granted and only notice it if it starts failing. Most age related hearing loss is not noticeable until later life, but deterioration begins much earlier. You start to lose some of your range as early as in your twenties. Age related hearing loss is much the same as other types of “wear and tear” on the body. Just as hips and knees wear out so does our hearing. Constant exposure to the noisy world we live in gradually wears away at the “nerves” in our ears, reducing their number and the range of sounds that can be picked up. What can you do to protect yourself? Even if you already have some loss, looking after what's left is imperative. Be aware of situations and environments that can damage your hearing such as: Playing loud music through headphones and earphones Attending loud live music concerts - even some classical concerts. Using simple DIY equipment such as hammers and power tools Day to day activities such as riding a motorcycle (wind noise not the engine noise as you might think) or even driving in a car with the window down (some truck and taxi drivers have more pronounced hearing loss in their right ear, nearest the open window) Recreational activities such as shooting. So first off, be aware when there may be damaging levels of noise present and if there is, protect your ears. Inexpensive foam earplugs can be purchased from DIY stores and some high street chemists. Most concert venues have free earplugs available, and whilst they rarely offer them to you on arrival, there’s usually a good supply behind the bar. Keep a few pairs in a drawer for use around the house when tackling your latest DIY project too. What if you already have hearing loss?

It’s not usually that you can’t hear at all but just that it’s not clear. Often it’s the high frequency sounds that fade first, such as bleeps and bells. Then it becomes difficult to hear what people are saying when there is background noise such as in crowds or when the television is on. If left undiagnosed or treated, a hearing loss can lead to other problems. Because it’s unclear what has been said, socialising in groups becomes awkward. Sufferers find themselves pretending to laugh at jokes when they didn't hear the punch-line, or just nodding and smiling and then being embarrassed because the person talking is awaiting an answer. This in turn leads to loss of confidence and feelings of social exclusion. What can be done? It’s really not necessary to literally suffer in silence. A simple trip to your GP to arrange a hearing test or to a specialist hearing centre or audiologist will mean your hearing is tested and assessed, usually free of charge. Discrete and almost invisible the latest aids can make such a difference and vastly improve your hearing. You'll never regain what has gone, but you can make the best of what you have left.

HEALTH IS YOUR HEAD BANGING?

More than 10 million people in the UK suffer from regular headaches. But how do you know what type of headache you have and what the best treatment is? Whether you wake up with a banging headache or it develops as a dull ache throughout the day, a headache can be more than just a pain in the head inconvenient, and at times debilitating. Headaches can also be scary, especially if you’re a fan of Dr Google and have already diagnosed yourself with several life threatening conditions. Thankfully most headaches aren’t dangerous, but understanding what type of headache you have and what’s causing it will help you when it comes to choosing treatment. Why does my head hurt? A headache is caused when the blood vessels around the brain swell, along with tension in the muscles and nerves in surrounding muscles. If you’re stressed, not having enough sleep, drinking too much, dehydrated or eating lots of junk food, there’s more chance you’ll end up with a blinder. Eye strain, blocked sinuses, a change in body temperature or blood pressure and hormonal changes

are other known triggers. Headaches can also be as a result of a cold virus or other health condition. If you’ve suffered a blow to the head or have a rash accompanied with a headache, always seek medical advice. Tension headaches are the most common type of headache and can feel as if someone has stretched a rubber band around the top and side of your head. Your scalp, temples, neck and shoulders may also be sore to touch. The pain is normally more constant compared to the throbbing ache you may experience from a migraine, which can cause vomiting and sensitivity to light. Cluster headaches tend to cause an intense pain around one or both eyes and can come on very suddenly. Sufferers may have one to three of these attacks every day for weeks or months. These types of headache are often more painful than a migraine and will require something stronger than paracetamol. Brewing up a headache Sadly the things we enjoy aren’t always great for us in the long-run and caffeine is just one of these examples. Found naturally in tea, coffee and chocolate and added to many energy drinks, it’s more the withdrawal than the caffeine itself that can lead to headaches. On the flip side,

non-prescription painkillers with added caffeine can actually speed up their effectiveness. Treating your headache It’s a good idea to speak to your doctor if you feel you need to take painkillers for more than two days a week, which is not recommended. You may also be at risk of developing ‘medication-overuse’ headaches if you do take them all the time. You can buy a range of different painkillers over the counter or obtain stronger alternatives on prescription. Some may suit you better than others they include paracetamol, codeine, anti-inflammatory painkillers (such as aspirin and ibuprofen) or a group of antimigraine medicines known as triptans (for example, sumatriptan). If you are allergic to drugs such as ibuprofen or nurofen known as non-steroidal anti-inflammatories (NSAIDs) or you are pregnant - then paracetamol is the safest option, but always check with your doctor or pharmacist first.

1.Essential oils: either use them for massage or add them to your bath. Recommended oils include Lavender, Clary Sage and Roman Chamomile. Add 6 to 8 drops to your bath or mix 2 drops in with a base oil. (Not suitable for pregnant women). 2.Cooling headache pads: you can normally buy these from any chemist for some instant soothing relief. These can be used alongside any other medication or on their own. 3.Tiger Balm: this is a natural remedy that is often used to help relieve headaches. Rub it in to the affected area or use it with a warm towel. (Not suitable for pregnant women or children under 2.) 4.Headache pillows: these may help prevent or relieve headaches by providing support to your neck, improving your posture and reducing inflammation. 5.Acupuncture/massage/reflexology: all of these alternative therapies can be extremely effective at relieving a nagging headache. Find out how to ease symptoms yourself, or make an appointment with a specialist who can carry out the treatment for you. by Julia Faulks

Yogabellies - For Women, Mothers’ and Babies What are YogaBellies Little Angels classes? Our exercises aim to induce a state of ’relaxed alertness’ - the optimum frame of mind for easy learning and memory retention (also know as ‘the alpha state’ or ‘the zone’). YogaBellies exercises encourage the creation of new neural pathways and connections between the two hemispheres of the brain. In laymans terms, we reach the parts other activities cannot reach! Childhood Health Meditation has been scientifically proven to increase immunity. In Holland, people are given cheaper health insurance if they practise meditation! Yoga helps to tone the muscles of the body so reducing the chance of childhood obesity and stress related behavioural problems. Improved Behaviour Stress is the main cause of challenging behaviour. When stress is released through the combination of our Little Angels and Angel Bear techniques, children experience the best of themselves. Meditation creates a 'feel good' effect and helps to create a positive outlook on life.

Increased Strength, Flexibility and Co-ordination Yoga strengthens the core stabilising muscles of the back and abdomen through its use of deep stretches and stamina building postures. Children's natural flexibility is decreasing due to modern sedentary lifestyles. YogaBellies sessions gets kids moving in fun, engaging ways. Confidence, Self-Esteem and Emotional Intelligence (EQ) YogaBellies classes are designed around themes which teach children about core values, feelings and ethics. We incorporate positive affirmations to embed self-esteem and use group work to build confidence. More FUN!! After all the scientific research is said and done, YogaBellies sessions, from a child's point of view are just FUN! It feels good to act out adventures, it is wonderful to lie down and relax with a beautifully scented lavender bag over our eyes and it's reassuring to begin to understand ourselves and those around us.

Monkey Music - Nurturing a Lifetime of Music Monkey Music, the award winning pre-school music group for children aged 3 months 4 years across the UK, is delighted to announce that it is expanding its classes in Bishopbriggs and Milngavie from January and will be holding classes at Playtown, (with reduced entry to softplay) Bishopbriggs on a Tuesday morning and Milngavie Town Hall on a Thursday morning, adding to the classes already running in Bearsden, Milngavie and Lenzie. Monkey Music, which was founded in 1993, aims to introduce music to very young children in a way they can easily understand and enjoy, nurturing a child's natural love of music so that it will last a lifetime. Specialist teachers, some of whom are professional musicians and parents themselves, gently encourage social and musical skills within a fun, stimulating and friendly environment. Experienced with young children, their classes are carefully structured to encourage learning and freedom of expression, and children are grouped in small classes according to their age.

website at www.monkeymusic.co.uk to sample some of the delights of Monkey Music for yourself? Monkey Music : Nurturing a Lifetime of Music.

Unique to Monkey Music is their newest curriculum which has been specially written for babies from 3 months in response to huge demand from parents, who are increasingly aware of the importance of introducing their children to music from as young an age as possible. Called “Rock'n'Roll”, each class is themed around the everyday life of a very young child and is a special time in the week for parents and carers to simply stop, look at each other and enjoy the sensory experience of sound together. As well as offering weekly classes, Monkey Music is also on hand to cater for children's birthday parties. Whether at home or in a hired hall, Monkey Music parties offer great entertainment for all the guests. An hour's musical fun is individually tailored to include your own little monkey's favourite songs and activities. BEAUTY

KITCHENS FOR LIVING

PUCKER UP - MAKE UP TRICKS FOR KISSABLE LIPS

Soft, plump, kissable lips are guaranteed to get you noticed - but if mother nature hasn’t blessed you with them, don’t despair, because we’ve compiled a clever guide that will help you to fake a full-on pout. Soften Up Before you even think about applying lipstick to your lips, it’s essential to spend a bit of time creating the right base for your product. Exfoliation is key in keeping your lips looking luscious as well as smooth and free of flakes, so it’s important to do this once a week. Start by applying a generous amount of lip balm to your lips to soften them, and then gently remove the top layer of skin using a soft wash cloth or toothbrush, in circular motions. Smother your lips in balm every night so that they are super soft for the next morning, when you apply your make-up. Line Up Although lip pencil probably isn’t high up on your shopping list of beauty must-haves, when used

correctly it can be an essential tool. It allows you to shape and define your lips, and helps to stop your lipstick from ‘bleeding’. Choosing a neutral and natural shade of lip liner is key for creating a modern look. Lining just outside the coloured part of your lips provides the fullest effect. Many women don’t do this, and tend to line inside the lip line, but this makes your lips appear thinner because the natural lip line generally extends further than the coloured part of your lips. Be sure to choose a soft lip liner and ‘round off’ the tip by smudging it on the back of your hand a few times - a sharpened point will look unnatural and harsh - before you apply. Define your ‘cupid’s bow’ by drawing a V in the centre curve of your top lip, bring the line round and down using soft feathery strokes. Line the curve of the bottom lip with the same light movements, and soften by lightly blending with your finger.

To advertise call Scott or Natalie on 0141 945 4210 or email: info@sbdirectory.co.uk

61

Complete with Colour It’s best to choose a natural shade of lip colour for two reasons: firstly, light and bright hues look youthful and secondly they make the lips appear fuller, unlike dark shades which have the opposite effect. Use a lip brush to paint the product onto your lips for a neat and even application - ensure that you take the colour right up to your lip liner line.

The tingling sensation lets you know it’s working and the results last for a few hours, so to keep the look you’ll need to re-apply regularly. By Helen Taylor

Get The Gloss Lip gloss is every girl’s best friend because it offers a lovely finish to otherwise dull lipsticks and can modernise your entire make-up look. Apply a shimmery gloss to the centre of your lips and blend gradually outwards to make your lips look really full. And, if you really want to make an impression with your pout, try one of the plumping glosses that are on the market. Using menthol, cinnamon or even chilli as active ingredients, these lip glosses create a mild irritation on contact with the lips causing them to temporarily increase in size.

GARDENING GROW YOUR OWN VEG By Pipa Greenwood I know a lot of people who have yet to try growing their own veg and plenty more who have tried but had some disappointing results. But as the new gardening year is upon us, why not have a go because it doesn’t need to be difficult and has the potential to be one of the most productive and fun things you’ve ever done. Now I’m no great fan of green wellies (mine are black) but I am a fan of green-gardening. Yes, plenty of gorgeous greens in the beds and borders, but also an ecologically green outlook. Simply put, home grown food tastes better, uses little if any air miles, can save you a packet and is enormously rewarding. Grow your vegetables and you are really getting the top end of the market produce and minimising any harmful effects to the environment. Remember to grow what you like and what your garden can grow well - this may take some experimenting, but don’t be afraid to admit that some things are trickier than others in your plot. If you’re an organic gardener or you simply want to produce pesticide free vegetables, you might need to spend more time thinking about what to grow and how you can best nurture it so that pests, diseases and other problems take a back seat. *Seed and plant catalogues are now more likely to let you know which varieties are relatively pest or disease resistant. *If you garden organically you can also encourage some of the naturally occurring insects that parasite or predate upon the garden pests, or bigger animals such as frogs, toads, hedgehogs and many birds. Insects include: Ladybirds: The larvae and the adults both consume huge numbers of aphids. Lacewings: The young or larvae are brilliant predators, eating mainly aphids, but also eating other pests such as thrips and eggs of moths.

when you move pots, low-growing plants or loose slabs, they are mostly black and often shiny and are brilliant predators of many pests including slugs, vine weevils and some insect eggs. Solitary wasps: Some feed their larvae on aphids, weevils and other insects. Centipedes: These eat a lot of soil dwelling creatures and their eggs.

Hoverflies: The soft-bodied yellowy grey larvae are great aphid eaters, a single one eating up to fifty in a day, nearing 1,000 in its lifetime.

Anthocorids or flower bugs: They feed on aphids, mites, thrips and a range of small insects.

Ground beetles: Often seen scuttling off at speed

Devil’s coach horse: Predators of slugs, leather jackets, cutworms and other soil pests.

There’s a good chance most of these are already in your garden, silently but efficiently helping you, but by growing some suitable plants you can really encourage them in and help build up their numbers. On the whole the simple, non-double varieties are the most insect friendly, so try some of these: Phacelia: A hardy annual with bluish perfumed flowers, perfect for direct sowing. Limnanthes douglasii (the poached egg plant): This yellow and white flowered hardy annual is loved by hoverflies. Eschscholzia (the Californian poppy): This pretty yellow, orange and cream flowered plant can be direct sown and thrives in sunny well-drained sites. Iberis (candytufts): One of the easiest hardy annuals, it has readily available pollen and nectar, perfect for many beneficial insects. Calendula officinalis (the pot marigold): A gorgeous bright gold, another that can be direct sown and should keep on flowering until hit by frosts.

So why not take the plunge? Just being in the garden makes most of us feel better and more relaxed plus it’s a great way to burn off some calories. And then of course there is the regular supply of superbly tasty vegetables, picked when ripened to perfection (not just to make them last longer on the supermarket shelf), gathered as and when you need them and in the quantities you need (cutting down on wastage). You will also find that growing your own veg allows you to choose the tastiest varieties and create some really delicious meals.

Why not grow some great vegetables in 2013? Visit www.pippagreenwood.com, sign up for ‘Grow Your Own with Pippa Greenwood’ and choose from a fantastic selection. Pippa sends them to you at just the right time for planting AND each week you receive an email with advice on ensuring great results; from just £29 for up to 66 garden-ready plants and the advice. You can also sign up for Pippa’s newsletter, receive a free e-book on organic gardening, buy Nemaslug and other biological controls and a hand-picked selection of garden products from her website.

HEALTH ALTERNATIVE HEALTH ON NHS

Until recently the world of health care was split very carefully down the middle. The 'proper' doctors; GPs, consultants, the NHS stood on one side, the 'alternatives' on the other, with their wishy-washy ideas which would never work like proper, good old-fashion pills and syrup. But as more and more alternative treatments become available from the NHS it is obvious that we as a country are embracing the vital part that alternative therapies can play in health care. Browse the NHS Directory of Complementary and Alternative Practitioners and you'll be amazed by the range of services now recommended by the now middle aged health service. From acupuncture to yoga, there seems to be a complementary therapy to suit you whatever your illness. There are some real surprises in there too; iridology, the practice of reading the patient's eyes for an indication of systemic issues, dowsing, more commonly associated with water seeking but often

used in diagnosing allergies and intolerances, even reiki, a laying on of hands which is often treated dismissively. Only five homeopathic hospitals exist in the UK at the moment so, as with many other treatments, getting an appointment can be a postcode lottery and take time. Not to mention the fact that many doctors are still reluctant to refer their patients to complementary therapists, unconvinced by their effect; indeed several top UK doctors have called for the NHS to stop paying for therapies, referring to them as 'bogus'. However there are many doctors and nurses who have embraced the alternative, entering further training themselves in order to carry out alternative procedures. The usefulness of acupuncture, massage and aromatherapy in treating pain and discomfort associated with cancer has been well documented and cannot be denied.

However, if there's one thing that the NHS cares about it's money and according to research the use of complementary therapies could in fact save the NHS huge amounts of money. A report commissioned by Prince Charles, who strongly believes in combining Eastern and Western treatments both alternative and conventional, was instrumental in convincing the press and public that alternative therapies could bring significant savings to the healthcare system where they are so desperately needed, particular in areas of palliative and mental health care.

Only 10% of GP services offer alternative treatments, however this doesn't mean you won't be entitled. Discuss the possibility of a referral with your GP and should he or she agree to treatment you may be sent to a specialist centre as an out of area patient. Be prepared to research: your GP may not have direct contact with practitioners but this doesn't mean that he won't refer you to someone you suggest. If your doctor refuses to refer you to an alternative therapist yet you are not satisfied with his reasoning you have the right to ask for a second opinion and, if still refused, make a complaint.

So how do you go about getting alternative treatment through your local healthcare trust?
