MUSIC NEW RELEASES Daft Punk - Random Access Memories The most talked about and most highly anticipated album of 2013 is Daft Punk's ‘Random Access Memories', the groups 4th studio album and first in 8 years. In their 20-year history Daft Punk have redefined electronic music, pioneered the live dance concert experience and shaped pop culture. Random Access Memories is their most ambitious and epic release to date. There are undeniable moments of genius in this album and they are now looking very much like one of the biggest bands in the world. Daft Punk have said that the album is an attempt to revive the "magic" of the event albums that soundtracked their childhoods. But the albums real hit potential lies in two tracks - ‘Lose Yourself to Dance’ and the lead single ‘Get Lucky’.

Miles Kane: Don’t Forget Who You Are Produced by Ian Broudie (The Zutons, Echo and the Bunnymen), 'Don't Forget Who You Are' is an upbeat, contemporary record, with a nod to glamrock, driving drumbeats and brimming with fierce riffs, as expertly demonstrated on recent single 'Give Up'. This 11-track album focuses purely on Miles Kane’s rock ‘n’ roll roots, stripping everything down so that this artist can focus on his individuality and the side to music he truly loves the most. From upbeat indie and rock inspired tracks, Kane mixes the album up a bit by including an emotive song at the beginning of the album. ‘Out of Control’ is a similar sound to his previous work. With lyrics such as ‘they’ll never be an end to our journey’ this indie/rock ballad gives a more serious side to his work. Another highlight to the album includes ‘You’re Gonna Get It’ which was co written and performed with Paul Weller.

Primal Scream - More Light Primal Scream release their 11th album, More Light which is a 13 track collection of new songs and the bands first album in 5 years. The band however have always remained defined by their third album, ‘Screamadelica’ from 22 years ago! ‘More Light’ has some standout tracks which include Elimination Blues, River of Pain as well as 'Invisible City' and the classic 'It's Alright, It's OK', out May 6th. Bobby Gillespie says: "I wanted to convey coming out of a dark time and into a good one. We always knew it wasn't going to be a straight ahead, high energy rock 'n' roll, two guitars, bass and drum record. It's sophisticated, layered, cinematic and orchestral; obviously working with (David) Holmes we were hoping to make a record more in keeping with that vision."

AT THE CINEMA THE GREAT GATSBY

No one has ever accused director Baz Luhrmann of modest ambitions, and it's not hard to see what he's trying to do in his kaleidoscopic, all-glam version of The Great Gatsby. Not that there is nothing to admire. Fitzgerald's 1925 novel was a jazz age fever dream, a mysterious story of obsession in which a poor man, born James Gatz, reinvents himself as the hugely wealthy Jay Gatsby (Leonardo DiCaprio) and buys a Long Island home across the bay from his lost love, the perky Daisy (Carey Mulligan). There he pines for her, surrounded by the gangsters, Wall Street investors, crooked politicians, and slinky hangers-on of the era, or at least of F. Scott Fitzgerald's imagination. Their story is narrated by Nick Carraway (Tobey Maguire), Daisy's cousin, who has rented a small place next to Gatsby's and becomes their go-between. In the film, he's a ruined alcoholic writing his memoirs, and Luhrmann shows his fealty to the printed word by having letters float through the air in rich, if totally

unnecessary, 3D. It's not literature exactly, but it's visual style that passes for it. Gatsby is just a rumour in the first part of the story, a man of mystery whom people are talking about. Someone says he's related to the German ruler Kaiser Wilhelm, but he seems more like Keyser Soze, a dark and mythic presence. When he is introduced, we see DiCaprio in close up, smiling into the camera with stars twinkling in the heavens behind him. With his broad, confident grin, he's reminiscent of no one as much as Charles Foster Kane, the reinvented dreamer of another, more coherent, American myth, and a hero also obsessed with the past. "Rosebud" is just another way of saying “Daisy". She's just as elusive. Gatsby and Daisy fell in love years earlier when Gatsby was a soldier, but after he went to war she married Tom Buchanan, an arrogant polo player with old money, in contrast to Gatsby's nouveau vulgarity.

The film is some 2 1/2 hours of gorgeous costumes, incipient alcoholism, heightened recreations of Old New York, and a beautiful yellow Duesenberg that Gatsby drives to and from the city, orchestrated to a soundtrack that melds Jay-Z, Beyonce and Gershwin. His route takes him past the bleak coalfields where workers slave in carefully designed silhouette - under the watchful eyes of Dr. Eckleburg, a billboard that represents an all-seeing God. It's a haunting symbol in the book but just another bit of production value in the film: this Gatsby doesn't so much build to a dark revenge as drag its artfully bloated glamour to the far end of the bay. At its heart, though, there is a ticking life. Unlike the 1974 Robert Redford version of the story, which just lay there on the screen, this Gatsby has a pulse.

every frame of this film. Luhrmann’s explication of The Great Gatsby is less unorthodox in many ways. We remain in Long Island during the roaring Twenties, the eponymous character still throws parties, and everything centres on awkward indiscretions, infidelity, and dishonesty. Then again, modern bands like The XX appear on the soundtrack, which isn't that traditional. Either way, the whole thing looks gorgeous, and the famed plot will always be engaging; as such we're already sold on the idea.

DiCaprio has a slick charm, even if his catchphrase, "old sport," sometimes comes out as "old spore" in his attempt at an Oxford accent. Mulligan is good, but she is too soulful an actress to capture Daisy's essential shallowness. Fitzgerald wrote that Daisy's voice is full of money: the line is missing in the movie, probably because Mulligan's voice is full of everything but. You don't have to go far to find it, though. It's in

TRAVEL GREEK ISLAND HOPPING IN STYLE

The beautiful Greek islands are just perfect for a spot of hopping, as many students will tell you. But you don't need to live out of a backpack and navigate your way round the island's hostels - hop aboard a luxury liner for a tour of the very best places in Greece. Santorini One of the world's most dramatic backdrops of cliffs, sea and sky in the world was sculpted by a volcanic eruption during the Bronze Age. The explosion caused the middle of this once-circular island to sink, leaving an enormous sea-filled crater flanked by mammoth cliffs. This cataclysmic event is the reason for many of the island's remarkable features, from its black-sand beaches to exquisite wines grown from the fertile volcanic soil. The town of Fira, located on the island's west end, is perched on the edge of sheer 260m cliffs. Wonderful views combine with quaint streets filled with souvenir shops, jewelers and fine restaurants. To truly appreciate this cliff-clinging spot, descend by cable car

to the port of Athinio below. If you're truly daring, zigzag down the face of the cliff on a donkey. Rhodes Rhodes is said to be the sunniest place in Europe, with an average of 300 days of sunshine a year. Inhabited since prehistoric times, the island has a rich history spanning millennia. The Old Town's character is greatly influenced by Italian architecture and this wellpreserved society still maintains its charm of a medieval town with Venetian and Turkish influences. This ancient harbour is where the famous Colossus of Rhodes, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, once stood. There are also ruins of the ancient acropolis and the Temple of Apollo. Buy fine pottery, leather goods and painted vases in the winding streets of the old town. Savour some local olive oil, homegrown fruits and vegetables and well-reputed Rhodian wine. Tour Sokratu Street for the best shopping and cuisine choices on the island.

Mythology cites Delos as the birthplace of Apollo, son of Zeus. Visit remnants of temples dedicated to Apollo or take a stroll to the Sanctuary of Artemis, dedicated to Apollo's sister. The House of the Dolphins and the House of the Masks showcase superbly colourful mosaic pavements. The Terrace of the Lions, a row of marble lions erected in the 7th century BC, stand as eternal guardians of the sanctuary.

PETS HOW YOUR DOG COOLFUEL IN THE SUMMER TOP TO 10 KEEP TIPS FOR IMPROVING EFFICIENCY While most of us are looking forward to soaking up a few rays in the summer sun, our four-legged friends are probably thinking otherwise. Unlike their human counterparts, dogs can't enjoy a refreshing iced drink or luxuriate in the cool of a gentle breeze through light summer clothes. Our hot and hairy hounds need a little extra help to keep them happy and healthy this summer, and animal welfare organisations are anxious to alert owners to the potential perils for their pets. Overexposure to the sun presents particular problems for animals as they can't sweat though their skin in the same way as humans. Dogs cool down by sweating through glands in their feet and panting so it's vital owners help their canine companions to stay cool. The RSPCA warns that warm or hot weather can be very uncomfortable for pets and cause distress, suffering and even lead to death. It urges owners to avoid leaving animals in cars, caravans, conservatories or outbuildings even if they are in the shade during sunny spells as temperatures can quickly rise to a potentially fatal 47C (117F). Their advice is reinforced by the Dogs Trust, whose veterinary director Chris Laurence says “Whilst enjoying fun in the sun please remember that dogs can suffer from the same problems that humans do including overexposure to the sun, overheating, dehydration and even sunburn. I urge dog owners to keep their hounds happy this summer by following Dogs Trust's advisory points”. The Trust says that pets should never be left in direct sunlight and need to be able to access a cool shady spot to escape from the sun at all times of the day. They also require a constant supply of clean, fresh drinking water to replace water lost through sweating

and panting. Without this, your canine companion could become dehydrated so it's important to check and fill bowls regularly. And remember to bring a supply of water if you and your pal are taking a car journey. Animals still need exercise when it's hot, but should not be allowed to exercise too much in the heat of the day. Experts recommend walking dogs early in the morning or later in the evening, when it's cooler, and make sure shady spots and water are available. Pets can also get sunburnt, especially those with light coloured noses, or light coloured fur on their ears. Human sunscreen can be toxic to our four-legged friends so buy a special pet version and apply to areas most likely to burn - ears, nose and bellies. Owners of very hairy hounds should also ensure their pooches are clipped to ease the weight of their summer coats. Most importantly, it is vital to be alert to the symptoms of heatstroke, which can be fatal. Signs include excessive panting, heavy salivation, rapid pulse, very red gums/tongue, lethargy, lack of co-ordination, being unable to get up after collapsing, vomiting, diarrhoea and, in extreme cases, loss of consciousness. Extra vigilance is needed with older, short-nosed and overweight dogs as they are more prone to overheat. If you suspect that your pet has heatstroke, move it to a shaded area, wet thoroughly with cool water (never iced) and use a household fan to blow cool air over their head and body while seeking urgent veterinary advice. Remember, under the Animal Welfare Act owners have a legal duty to care for their animals, which includes preventing suffering. Penalties are a fine of up to £20,000 and/or up to six months in prison.

MOTORS JAGUAR F TYPE TOP 10 TIPS FOR IMPROVING FUEL EFFICIENCY

The E-Type replacement has taken 50 years to arrive - can it live up to the legend? What is it? Quite simply, the most important Jaguar for more than 50 years. Not since the iconic E-Type has Jaguar launched a new model into this segment, and boy has the wait been worth it. The stunning F-Type is the British manufacturer’s new halo model a high performance, two-seater convertible that’s charged with ‘changing the face of the brand’. Buyers are queuing up for them, with a six-month wait already in place, and that’s before any of them have driven it. What’s under the bonnet? There are three different models the F-Type, F-Type S and F-Type V8S. The first two are V6s and the latter, obviously, a V8. All units are supercharged. The standard F-Type has a 3.0-litre V6 with 335bhp, 450Nm, hits 60mph in 5.1s and tops out at 161mph. The middle of the range F-Type S hits 60mph in 4.8s and cracks 171mph thanks to 375bhp and 460Nm. The range topping 5.0-litre V8S has a frightening 488bhp, 625Nm and tops 186moh with 60mph dispatched in 4.2

seconds. They all feel rapid and sound absolutely incredible thanks to an exhaust system which took 18 months to develop. What’s the spec like? Highlights include the eight-speed automatic gearbox (standard), the multi-adjustable sports seats, and Meridian sound system. There are some brilliant design touches too - like the central heater vents that rise out of the dash when you turn the air con on. And the deployable door handles that pop out of the bodywork. Ian Callum we salute you. Any rivals? Yes, several. But the biggest the Voldemort of the Jaguar world (dare not speak his name or he’ll grow stronger) is without doubt the Porsche 911. Jaguar benchmarked the German rival in all areas of the FType’s development. Other notable foes include the Audi R8 and Aston Martin V8 Vantage. All cost considerably more than the equivalent Jaguar.

What’s it like to drive? Incredible. This is a drivers’ car through and through. We spent plenty of time in all derivatives and loved the crisp steering, the rapid eight-speed paddle shift box and the sound. Under acceleration all versions sound brilliant, and fizzle, crack and pop on the overrun. It feels a lot lighter than it looks with extensive use of aluminium in the construction helping here. On the track it’s nimble and involving and huge fun while on the road it’s nothing short of intoxicating. We’d go as far as saying this is the best driver’s Jaguar ever. Lightweight The 50:50 weight distribution is key to the way the car feels. Engineers even moved the windscreen washer bottle to the rear to save 7kg from the front end. Some 50 per cent of the aluminium used is recycled the bonnet alone is made from 26,000 drinks cans.

The verdict It’s the car of the year, without a shadow of a doubt. Our pick of the range would be the V6S it’s just as much fun to drive as the V8, sounds just as brilliant, and the peaky power delivery is stunning. But the real coup is the pricing every model is 25 per cent less than the equivalent 911, its bitter rival. The Knowledge Model: Jaguar F-Type Price: £67,500 Engine: 3.0-litre, V6, supercharged Power: 357bhp, 460Nm Max speed: 171mph 0-60mph: 4.8s By James Baggott Managing Director of Economy: 31mpg BlackballMedia.co.uk Emissions: 213g/km

Sales Of the 74m cars sold worldwide last year, just 0.6 per cent of them were sports cars. The US will account for 45% of sales, UK 25% and Germany 23%. Some 90% of buyers will be new to Jaguar.

TECH GUIDE HIGH TECH HOLIDAY

A VERY HAPPY HOLIDAY WITH SOME HIGH-TECH HELP Some of the most useful travel gadgets are the simplest. The TanSafe is a great example: it looks like a standard bottle of sun cream, but it’s a secret safe that’s big enough for your cash, cards, keys and even your mobile phone (but not a phone case). It’s even watertight, so it can protect your phone from the odd splash. At £7.99 it’s cheap too. Some of our favourite technology solves problems we thought were with us forever - such as creased shirts. For £34.99, the Shirt Shuttle MK2 is a hanger that you wrap your freshly ironed shirt or blouse around, folding it and clipping it shut to protect your shirt from creasing. How attractive it is depends on how much you hate ironing: a travel iron will set you back around £10, while a portable garment steamer such as Rowenta’s DR5050 promises to unwrinkle anything for £30. If you’re travelling with children, there’s no shortage of technology that can keep them amused on even the longest trip. Apple’s iPad Mini is ideal, providing all the fun of an iPad without the weight or price, but it’s still quite expensive at £269! an iPod touch does much the same thing in a smaller case for half the price, or a quarter of the price if you’re buying used. If you prefer Android tablets Google’s Nexus is a good buy at £159. All of these devices can run apps, and you can copy video from your computer or buy or rent videos from wherever you can find an internet connection. We’d advise against 3G devices that connect to the mobile phone network: there are often very high charges for data roaming.

The problem with many travel-related gadgets is that they can be very large and very heavy - and that’s terrible if you’re trying to keep everything in a single suitcase that doesn’t exceed the airline’s weight limit. For example, a wireless speaker such as the Supertooth Disco weighs a massive 1.1kg, and it’s a hefty size too. When it comes to travel speakers, small can be beautiful: the £18 X-Mini II Capsule speaker weighs just 82g but it punches way above its weight. It doesn’t sound as good as a top-end speaker system but it’s a vast improvement on any smartphone’s speakers. If size really does matter, you can even cut the size of your plugs - but beware, because it can be pricey. The Mu Folding Plug is a 3-pin plug with a USB socket on the other side, and it folds down to a titchy 1.4cm - but at around £25 for one, it’s considerably more expensive than standard plugs. Now that we’re travelling with lots of gadgets, powering and/or recharging them can be a problem: it’s not unusual to have a camera, an e-reader, a smartphone and a music player competing for the same plug socket as the TV or hairdryer. Rather than packing multiple chargers or 4-way extension leads, it might be a better idea to invest in a 4-port worldwide travel charger, which comes with 4 USB ports in the top and a collection of interchangeable plugs that work almost anywhere in the world, all for around £10. Such chargers aren’t powerful enough for iPads, which draw massive amounts of power, but they’re fine for smartphones, cameras and other popular bits of kit.

FINANCE DEALING WITH PERSONAL DEBT

The story is a common one. It begins with a few minor expenses paid on a credit card - petrol, the week’s shopping, and a present for a loved one. The habit develops to include a weekend break, then meals, and of course a new television to replace the cranky old one. The convenient plastic friend becomes a little stretched, so an offer of another credit card is retrieved from the mantelpiece - a flyer detailing an ‘unbeatable’ 0% 6month introductory rate and healthy £5,000 credit limit. After a few days, the shiny card arrives to join the evergrowing family of plastic companions. So many, they can barely fit in the wallet. As well as cards, there are other offers to temp the lowly consumer: loans, remortgages, overdrafts, all with unique methods of repayment, that seemingly provide access to cash in more immediate and exciting ways than saving. As the personal burden grows, however, there’s a need for increasingly creative ways to juggle the bills, perhaps by shifting the balance between cards, consolidating them into a personal loan, or remortgaging the house to swallow the entire debt. But alas, these measures all lead in one direction: into the abyss of spiralling debt. Denial is a common reaction. That cabinet that used to file the odd bank statement and credit card bill becomes

home to a wad of paperwork telling an uncomfortable story of outstanding balances, demands of repayment, or threats of court action. For the working man or woman, this extra burden compounds everyday responsibilities of work, children, and bills to a frightening degree, such that every waking hour is consumed by the fear and dread of an ever-worsening predicament. What started as a little extravagance on that solitary plastic friend, turns into an all-consuming monster. What to do? Like the alcoholic, health and relationships are the first to suffer. Action is the only answer and the first stage is to admit the problem. In the modern world, borrowing has become a normal part of our lives, but trouble looms when the ability to meet repayments diminishes with mounting debt. Fortunately, help is at hand, and in a way, the current climate of indebtedness has removed some of the associated stigma. In the UK, the Citizens Advice Bureau is an excellent first port of call in a storm. Whether the ship is sinking, or already on the seabed, a frank discussion will reveal that you are not alone in your plight. You may even find that your predicament is not as dire as you thought.

To advertise call Scott or Natalie on 0141 945 4210 or email: info@sbdirectory.co.uk

The worst thing you can do is suffer alone. No one is out to get you and no one wishes to humiliate you when you’re down, but you must face the music and talk it through with the experts. The Citizens Advice Bureau will assess your financial situation. If you have any income, they may suggest a debt management plan, and even negotiate monthly repayments you can afford with your creditors. Sale of assets, repossession, or bankruptcy are other possibilities that are not the end of the world, but will require you to adapt and take a new approach to dealing with money. Other organisations can offer assistance, but beware of the sharks and never try to resolve the situation by undertaking more debt. Payplan provide debt help and advice via their website and freephone number, with options ranging from debt managements plans, trust deeds (residents of Scotland only), and IVAs (Individual Voluntary Arrangements) for self-employed people. IVAs can avoid bankruptcy through a formal arrangement with creditors to pay a proportion of your unsecured debts. Payplan provide their services free of charge and are funded by donations from the credit industry, thus they claim impartiality by not favouring, or having any affiliation to, any one creditor.

For those not confident on the telephone, the Citizens Advice Bureau might be the best option as they do arrange meetings, although be aware that they are a busy organisation and it may take some time to get an appointment. Insolvency practitioners (IPs) can advise on debt problems and whether bankruptcy is the best way forward. They can also oversee the processes of company liquidation, bankruptcy, or IVAs, depending on individual needs. It’s imperative to use the services of a licenced IP, but your first port of call might be one of the aforementioned organisations prior to taking this route.

HOME FAMILY GARDENS Warm sun and blue skies are not the only ingredients for a perfect summer’s day spent outdoors. Whether for dining, playing or simply relaxing, we look at ways in which to make your garden a fun and functional place for all the family. From the smallest to the largest outdoor area, it’s possible to create a beautiful, useable space that children and adults alike will enjoy. But it does require a little forethought. First, consider how you can really make the most of your garden. Perhaps you could paint an unattractive fence, trim back some overhanging branches or extend an area of paving? Can you create a tucked-away area for making dens, or would you like an adultsonly seating area away from noisy games? Should that greenhouse really be next to the lawn where the kids play football? And can you install lighting? Exterior lighting will transform your garden, highlighting interesting features, guiding you safely in the dark and allowing you to enjoy it after the sun has set. Next, it’s time to consider furniture. For relaxation, it could be anything from a hammock to a sun lounger, an outdoor mattress to a steamer chair. For eating, outdoor dining tables and chairs vary hugely in price, but solid, more durable types are usually an investment worth making. Styles range from metal to funky coloured plastic to classic wood (an FSC-certification means it’s environmentally friendly). Bear in mind, however, that you don’t always have to buy new you could scour car boot sales and second-hand shops for cheap and cheerful pieces that, as long as they’re stable and at the right height for eating, can be given a couple of coats of exterior-quality paint for a charmingly casual look. Remember that, ideally, garden furniture should be stored away when not in use, so unless you have an enormous shed it’s best to opt for pieces that are slimline or can be folded up easily.

Navajo lounging armchair, £299, and stool £129; Oxford outdoor scatter cushion, Pioneer Dash, £20; all John Lewis (08456 049 049; www.johnlewis.com).

cover the table you could choose anything from a practical oilcloth to a pretty embroidered tablecloth. An informal collection of crockery and glass, in varied but co-ordinating colours, looks fantastic, too. For young children, plastic, metal or even paper plates, bowls and tumblers are available in a range of gorgeous colours and patterns. The finishing touches are colourful bunting, fairy lights or strings of lanterns, tea lights or decorative candles and jugs filled with a profusion of flowers. Despite the vagaries of the English weather, one of your main considerations must be to provide some shaded areas, especially for eating and playing areas. Permanent shading might take the form of a gazebo, arbour or similar, or simply a fabric awning fixed to hooks in walls or trees. Alternatively, a parasol or garden umbrella is an inexpensive option, either freestanding or over a table; look out for versions that tilt, offering greater versatility.

Finally, it’s playtime. From paddling pools to trampolines, croquet sets to giant games of snakes and ladders, there are all sorts of toys that will keep the kids amused. Simple things as a ball, a swing (hung from a strong branch) or a skipping rope will also provide hours of fun.

By now your garden planning should have paid off and, with everyone happily fed and the children entertained, it’s time to make a cup of tea, pop on a sunhat and head out for that well-earned snooze in a deckchair.

Plants for family gardens In a family garden you need tough plants that are easy to look after and safe for children: avoid fragile blooms, anything with thorns, or plants that can cause skin irritations or are poisonous. A good backbone of easycare shrubs will provide structure, then add a few perennials for both colour and fragrance. Lavender and chocolate cosmos (Cosmos atrosanguineus) are good choices for their lovely

scent, as are Mexican orange blossom (Choisya ternata) and the thornless rose ‘Zéphirine Drouhin’. You could also consider mallow (Lavatera), dogwood (Cornus), buddleia and the vigorous Kerria japonica. If you have the space, set aside an area for children to grow their own plants. Sweet peas, sunflowers, beans, lettuces and nasturtiums are easy to cultivate and will give pleasure all summer long.

Monkey Music - Nurturing a Lifetime of Music Monkey Music, the award winning pre-school music group for children aged 3 months 4 years across the UK, is delighted to announce that it is expanding its classes in Bishopbriggs and Milngavie from January and will be holding classes at Playtown, (with reduced entry to softplay) Bishopbriggs on a Tuesday morning and Milngavie Town Hall on a Thursday morning, adding to the classes already running in Bearsden, Milngavie and Lenzie. Monkey Music, which was founded in 1993, aims to introduce music to very young children in a way they can easily understand and enjoy, nurturing a child's natural love of music so that it will last a lifetime. Specialist teachers, some of whom are professional musicians and parents themselves, gently encourage social and musical skills within a fun, stimulating and friendly environment. Experienced with young children, their classes are carefully structured to encourage learning and freedom of expression, and children are grouped in small classes according to their age.

website at www.monkeymusic.co.uk to sample some of the delights of Monkey Music for yourself? Monkey Music : Nurturing a Lifetime of Music.

Unique to Monkey Music is their newest curriculum which has been specially written for babies from 3 months in response to huge demand from parents, who are increasingly aware of the importance of introducing their children to music from as young an age as possible. Called “Rock'n'Roll”, each class is themed around the everyday life of a very young child and is a special time in the week for parents and carers to simply stop, look at each other and enjoy the sensory experience of sound together. As well as offering weekly classes, Monkey Music is also on hand to cater for children's birthday parties. Whether at home or in a hired hall, Monkey Music parties offer great entertainment for all the guests. An hour's musical fun is individually tailored to include your own little monkey's favourite songs and activities. BEAUTY

KITCHENS FOR LIVING

EAT YOURSELF BEAUTIFUL You might think that the secret to beautiful skin lies inside an expensive pot of ‘miracle cream’, but you’d be wrong. That’s because the key to achieving a young, glowing, healthy complexion is far simpler and much cheaper and you will find that it helps your hair and nails too. It’s all about eating the correct food; getting the right vitamins and nutrients and stocking up on the super foods that are guaranteed to boost your beauty the completely natural way. So, instead of heading to the nearest beauty counter this weekend and spending a fortune, take a trip to the supermarket instead and start eating your way to flawless skin, shiny hair and long nails. Here are our top tips on how to do it: Foods that are rich in vitamin C help the production of collagen which strengthens the capillaries that feed your skin. So, to keep looking youthful, start munching your way through plenty of delicious blueberries, strawberries, oranges, kiwi fruits and blackberries. Omega-3 benefits the skin by boosting hydration, regulating oil production and delaying ageing of the skin. Find it in oily fish, like mackerel, herring, salmon, anchovies, and tuna. Vitamin E-rich foods are essential for healthy skin - try snacking on hazel nuts, brazil nuts, walnuts and seeds to get your quota. Avocados are renowned for their beauty benefits; thanks to their high nutritional value, they are also a good source of vitamin E. Eating eggs, leafy green vegetables, carrots and liver as well as drinking milk are good ways to increase levels of vitamin A, which helps the skin to re-build tissue. It’s a key vitamin in the fight against ageing as it can aid in keeping lines, wrinkles and dull skin at bay. Pumpkin seeds, sardines and oysters will keep skin supple and soft because they are rich in zinc, so make sure you add them to your shopping list.

Sulphur can be found in foods such as garlic and onions and helps the skin stay smooth. Iron is useful for improving skin tone, so try to nibble on sesame seeds and dried apricots throughout the day.

To advertise call Scott or Natalie on 0141 945 4210 or email: info@sbdirectory.co.uk

61

Don’t forget to keep skin completely clear by staying thoroughly hydrated. Most of us don’t have enough to drink throughout the day, and we foolishly think that all of those cups of tea and coffee count - they don’t. It’s really important to drink eight glasses of water to make a difference to your complexion. After a while you’ll find that your skin will be clearer and those annoying breakouts will be gone forever. In fact, it’s a good idea to cut down on the caffeine altogether - limit your tea and coffee intake, and remember that some fizzy drinks are loaded with caffeine too.

It really doesn’t take long to start reaping the rewards of a healthy change in your diet and lifestyle. Almost immediately you will start to see and feel the numerous benefits. You can be sure that your body will be thanking you for making the changes that result in you looking beautiful. The nutrients, vitamins and minerals that you need for healthy skin, glossy hair and strong nails are essential for the health of the rest of your body too. This means that you’ll be left feeling fantastic as well as looking your best.

Remove all processed and junk foods which are high in fat, salt, sugars and calories from your diet as much as you can. Apart from being no good for your overall health, poor foods make your complexion appear dull and lifeless. They contain little in the way of protein, vitamins or minerals, and so add nothing positive to your diet but calories. Smoking and drinking are one of the biggest factors in losing your youthful look, so quit the cigarettes, and try to keep alcohol consumption to a minimum.

GARDENING HOME GROWN HERBS By Pipa Greenwood There’s a really reliable, easy, low-cost and loweffort way to add some zing to your meals; homegrown herbs. Many herbs are simple to raise from seed and if you start sowing now you should be able to have a plentiful supply of fresh, tasty herbs to add to salads, sandwiches, stews and stir-fries for months to come. All you need to is a sunny window sill or balcony, or a well-drained, sunny spot in your garden. First, find some good quality multi-purpose compost, your chosen herb seeds and some pots. Good-quality compost is well worth the little bit extra you need to pay. The style of pot is up to you. You may want to choose a classic Mediterranean one, or perhaps a good-looking plastic planter for longevity and light-weight characteristics. Remember that plenty of drainage is essential, and that the smaller herbs do not need a deep root run, so there’s no need for a very tall planter or pot. It’s best to grow each type of herb in its own individual pot, so buy a selection of pots with a minimum diameter of 8cm. Once you have your pot to hand, put a broken flower pot or other drainage material in the base and then fill with good quality compost to within 1cm of the rim of the pot and firm it down, not too aggressively, but enough to ensure that there’s no subsidence later on. With large seeds such as coriander, position the seeds evenly on the compost surface. Sprinkle smaller seed thinly. The seeds need to be covered with compost so use your finger or a dibber to gently press the seed in to the very surface of the compost and then drizzle more compost on top to the depth stated on the packet of seed. Water the compost thoroughly either from above using a watering can with rose attached, or by standing the pot in a saucer of water for a few minutes until the compost surface is just moist. The seeds generally germinate quite quickly and often within just a week or two you’ll have lots of tiny herbs like this coriander. Once the herbs are up and growing strongly you can start to harvest them. Use sharp scissors or a sharp knife to cut off what you need; this way you’ll minimise damage to the growing plants and so help to keep them cropping for longer. As long as you keep the pots adequately watered, ideally by watering

from the base, they should last for several weeks or months but make sure that the compost is not too wet or else your herb pots won’t last long. If you find that you’re not eating them fast enough, store some for later use. Ice cubes give you a really great fresh-herb taste offseason. Just half fill ice-cube tray sections with water. Add chopped fresh herbs to each section and top up with water. Label the tray as they can be difficult to identify. You can then simply pop them whole into stews and casseroles as and when you need them. Top herbs that grow well from seed: There are lots of herbs which do very well in pots when sown from seed. Some of my favourites include Italian or Genovese basil, lemon basil, chervil, Coriander ‘Cilantro’ for leaves, flat-leaved parsley, Ainse, Thai basil, chervil, chives, fennel, garlic chives. Visit www.pippagreenwood.com for Pippa’s ‘Winter thru’ Spring’ vegetable collection, great plants for planting and regular advice emails from Pippa, and buy a great range of gardening products including Nemasys caterpillar, slug, ant and other biological controls, Enviromesh and Envirofleece.

HEALTH FEELING THE ITCH

With the British summer finally here it’s not just us embracing the warmer weather - as we peel our winter layers off and take our arms and legs out of hibernation, summer bugs will also make their untimely appearance. Over the past couple of years wet and warm summers have resulted in an explosion in mosquito and flea populations, which can only mean one thing - bites and more bites. You’d like to think you would take it as a compliment that insects think you’re tasty enough to feast on, but it’s not much fun when you’re left with burning, red, swollen and itchy marks - not to mention the pain from stinging nettles after balmy walks in the countryside and picnics in the park.

On-the-spot treatments There are some simple ways you can help relieve any discomfort if you’ve been bitten or stung: wash the area with soap and water, use a cold compress or an ice pack (a bag of frozen peas will do the trick) and try not to scratch to prevent infection. You can also use a spray or cream that contains local anaesthetic, antihistamine or mild hydrocortisone to prevent itching and swelling, or take an antihistamine tablet (check with your doctor or pharmacist if you are pregnant, breastfeeding or worried about drowsiness or allergies to medication). Alternative remedies For stinging nettle rashes rub the affected area with dock leaves for some instant relief - they are normally found growing near nettles. Homeopathy is often used

to treat bites and stings. For example, Apis and Ledum can help reducing swelling and relieve aching pains.

Use an insect repellent at times when you’re more likely to be stung and try and keep your skin covered.

Essential oils such as Tea Tree Oil and Lavender Oil (dabbed on neat) can be a useful addition to your first aid kit and provide on-the-spot relief as well as helping reduce the risk of infection. You can also add any of the following oils to a bite and sting lotion or cream: Burdock, Plaintain, Echinacea, Feverfew, Nettle, Yellow Doc and St John’s Wort. Some oils can be used as a preventative by putting them in a lotion or water spray and applying to the skin. For example, Lavender, Rosemary, Tea Tree or Citronella.

Keep an eye on your drinks to make sure that wasps or bees haven’t sneaked inside for a cheeky sip they particularly like sweet drinks. Try not to panic when you see an insect that may sting if you wave your arms around you are far more likely to be stung. Stand up slowly, walk away and it will usually buzz off.

Always seek medical advice if you have wheezing, difficulty breathing or swallowing, excess swelling around the bite or sting, or flu-like symptoms that appear to become worse rather than better. If you’ve previously had a severe reaction you will normally be offered an adrenaline pen or be referred to an allergy clinic for further investigations.
