SBA Logged into the 21st Century
From the Head of School
Dear SBA Families and Friends:
W
hen you take a look at the 2010-11 Annual Report for St. Bernard Academy you are not only looking at a snapshot of the previous year’s financial status, you are also looking at a collection of names of
the people who continue to support the great work started by the Sisters of Mercy so many years ago. We continue to follow the mission started by those sisters and are proud to share in their legacy. When we have the opportunity to visit with the Sisters both on our campus and on theirs at Pennington Bend, we are always met with the greatest hospitality . I ask that you continue to keep them in your prayers as important members of our school community. We certainly appreciate their strength, their commitment, Mr. Carl J. (Chuck) Sabo Head of School
and their dedication to making St. Bernard Academy what it is today.
During these last few years of economic uncertainty we recognize the sacrifices made by our families to invest in their children’s education by sending them to SBA. Please know how proud I am to note that this year we have had the largest percentage of parent participation in our Annual Giving Fund campaign ever. Thanks to the hard work of Jim and Lauren Pareigis, nearly 83% of our families participated. Please add to that list the names of so many generous grandparents and friends and the wonderful one-for-two dollar match by SBA friend and grandfather Jim Carell. You may have noticed the campus improvements over the past year. We have been very fortunate to receive so much support from our Home and School Association and were able to remodel the lobby and convert the garage into a beautiful music classroom. The Board of Trustees also paved the way for the development of a master site plan and work on a school-wide 3-5 year strategic plan. The focus of the plan will be to improve, enhance, and sustain the educational experience of St. Bernard Academy. Finally, we celebrate the accomplishments of a growing list of alumni. We are especially proud of the successes in the secondary schools, their collective college choices, and their meaningful contributions to a much broader community. I am happy to share this report with you. With kindest regards, Carl J. Sabo Head of School

From the Board President Dear SBA Family, Although eight years have passed since my wife Eileen and I attended the St. Bernard eighth-grade graduation of our youngest child, it would seem uncomfortably odd to address this message some way other than to our St. Bernard “family.” From the first time we stepped foot in the school more than 21 years ago at the invitation of friends who thought we should bring our oldest child to a Fall Fair to see if St. Bernard might be the proper fit for him, the sense of family associated with the school has been omnipresent. Indeed, what most impressed us that evening many years ago was the genuineness of the interactions between the faculty and the students and between the students themselves. My mind’s eye still clearly sees teachers laughing and smiling as their students paid prize tickets to have them Tim Wurz detained in a makeshift jail, older students surreptitiously helping President Board of Trustees younger students hook that special prize at the Fish Pond, and juniorhigh students offering kindergartners their own tickets so younger students could “purchase” a stuffed animal at the redemption booth. These days, my visits to the school on weekdays unfailingly elicit a hug from Sister Mary Ann or Ms. Fahey, a genuine inquiry about the well-being of Michael and Emily from Mr. Stewart, or a welcoming smile and special moment of conversation with Ms. Floyd and Ms. Stockwell that lets me know that our nuclear family is still a part of the larger St. Bernard family. Of course, like all families, the St. Bernard family also has had its trials, tribulations, and internal disagreements about matters both trivial and important. Fortunately, however, the school has had the good fortune over the years to be guided by Board presidents like Phil Mattingly, John Bumpus, David Tehle, Beverly Bond, Brent Antony, and so many others who have reminded us that the support, forgiveness, compassion, and loyalty that serve as the hallmarks of successful family life also serve our school family well. As St. Bernard Academy turns another page in its history, it is faced with challenges that are, in some ways, much different from those faced in the past and, in other ways, merely new takes on age-old dilemmas. Through them all, St. Bernard will continue to strive “to provide an excellent Catholic academic education built on a foundation of self-discipline, compassion, and a sense of responsibility for social justice in the tradition of the Sisters of Mercy.” In many arenas, the tension between the effort to secure a place as the preeminent elementary educator in the city and the Sisters of Mercy’s commitment to offering such an education to all deserving children without regard to socio-economic status, ethnicity, race, or belief system might prove to be an insurmountable stumbling block. At St. Bernard, the two goals are not only compatible, but necessarily essential components of a truly great, principled, academic institution. To help define the course that our journey to new heights will take over the next five to eight years, your Board is spearheading an ambitious strategic-planning process. The success of this effort depends in great measure upon your support, your ideas and participation, and your prayers. On behalf of the entire Board, I invite each of you to join us in coming together as one family to address the issues that face us and strengthen those bonds that make St. Bernard the special haven that it is. I thank you for the opportunity I have had to serve you as Board president since July. I also look forward to working with you to provide present-day and future St. Bernard students the tools and skills they will need to be the inquiring, compassionate, visionary leaders of tomorrow. Sincerely, Tim Wurz President, SBA Board of Trust 3. The Clairvaux

SBA Welcomes New Faculty Seraphine Bitter – School Counselor Seraphine is a Cincinnati, Ohio, native who graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Pre-professional Psychology from Anderson University and a Master of Arts in Mental Health Counseling, specializing in children in a school setting, from the University of Cincinnati. Seraphine moved to Nashville in May 2010 for a position at a private non-profit company where she worked as an in-home family therapist for 15 months before receiving the opportunity at St. Bernard Academy. An avid Cincinnati Red’s baseball fan, Seraphine loves her adopted threeyear-old dog Radin (named after her favorite singer), karaoke, and enjoying the numerous social opportunities for a young professional in Nashville. Seraphine is passionate and committed to working with children and teenagers in a school setting and maintains a positive, strength-focused, systems approach with every individual she encounters. Blessed and honored to be a new member of the SBA family, Seraphine prioritizes providing emotional, relational, and educational support to both students and families alike. Susan Bryant - Pre-Kindergarten Aide Susan moved to Franklin, Tennessee, ten years ago from California. She has a Bachelor’s degree in history from Fresno State University. She taught history and implemented science programs in the elementary schools in southern California. Before coming to SBA, Susan taught for five years in a Pre-K program in Brentwood. She has taken several courses on special education, learning disabilities, and positive reinforcement. Susan has been married to Kyle for sixteen years. She has three children: Kevin, a sophomore at Father Ryan High School, Jack, a sixth grader, and Adam, a second grader. She stays busy with their various activities including football, karate, and lacrosse. Susan has also taught religious education at Holy Family Catholic Church for the past five years. Her hobbies include reading, socializing with friends, and spending time skiing at Centerhill Lake. She loves being an aide in Pre-K. Mary Margaret Busler– Lower School Mary Margaret was born and raised in the small town of Lewisburg, Tennessee. After high school she attended the University of Tennessee in Knoxville where she studied animal science. After graduating with a Bachelor of Science degree, Mary Margaret worked for the University of Tennessee’s Dairy Research and 4. The Clairvaux
Education Center. Two and a half years ago, she had her little girl, Leland. Mary Margaret has always had a passion for working with children. She has done quite a bit of volunteer work for underprivileged children in her hometown along with supporting children’s programs in Knoxville while she was in undergraduate school. Her little girl inspired her to go back to school and earn a degree in teaching. When Leland was four months old, she began elementary education classes at Trevecca Nazarene University in Nashville. During her studies she worked at St. Bernard Academy as a substitute teacher and fell in love with everyone there. Once she completed her Master of Arts in Teaching degree, she began teaching full-time at SBA in the fall of 2011. Mary Margaret has the opportunity to teach the second-level children and enjoys it more than anything! She feels so blessed to be with SBA and is thankful for all those who encouraged her to be where she is today. Sandy Derwenskus – Physical Education Sandy Derwenskus came to St. Bernard Academy with 10 years of teaching experience. Raised in a family filled with teachers and administrators, teaching was Sandy’s goal from an early age. She earned her Bachelor of Arts in Education from Michigan State University and her MA in Educational Leadership from Eastern Michigan University. Sandy has been married to Kurt for 20 years and has three children: Megan 15, Paige 13, and Matthew 11. Sandy’s interests, aside from teaching, include sports (watching and playing), reading, whitewater rafting, and spending time with family and friends. Sandy also volunteers her time with St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital and Girl Scouts. Teaching P.E. at SBA is Coach Derwenskus’ dream job! Lindsey Griffey – 3rd, 5th, and 6th Levels Lindsey is a native of Franklin, Tennessee, and comes from a family of teachers. She earned a Bachelor of Arts in English and Master of Arts in Teaching from Belmont University. Her teaching career began with internships at Eakin Elementary and St. Bernard Academy during the 2010-2011 school year. Lindsey is excited to join the SBA family as a full-time faculty member this year. Lindsey lives in Spring Hill with her wonderful husband Joseph, and cat, Riley. The Griffeys are parishioners of Catholic Church of the Nativity. Lindsey enjoys gardening, reading, shopping for antiques, and spending time with family and friends. Lindsey is blessed to have the opportunity to teach at SBA and loves sharing her passion for learning with students.
& Staff Danielle Powell – Kindergarten Aide Danielle Powell is a new addition to St. Bernard Academy as the kindergarten aide. She received her Master of Arts in Education from Lipscomb University specializing in instructional technology. Her favorite things about teaching are making every lesson fun and interesting by relating lessons to everyday life. She also enjoys the excitement of incorporating new technologies into the classroom. Danielle and her husband, Joseph, spend their free time doing charity work as members of a non-profit costuming group called SOSI (Society of Secret Identities) as well as traveling as much as possible. Jacquie Rohricht – Lower School Jacquie was born and raised in Wisconsin. The eldest of five children, she graduated with a degree in economics from Lawrence University and moved to Knoxville to work for Kimberly-Clark Corporation. When her first child was born, the next phase of her life began – ten years as a stay-at-home mom. When it was time to return to the workplace, Jacquie decided to pursue a long-held dream of becoming a teacher. She enrolled at Trevecca Nazarene University and, two sleepless years later, earned her Master of Arts in Teaching. When she is not at SBA teaching reading, language arts, and religion, she is with her children Lizzie and Josh. Their many activities keep the family on the go. Jacquie enjoys cooking, gardening, and reading. When asked what she is reading, the answer is often a piece of children’s literature. She is always on the look out for another great read to share with her children and students. Curt Winter – Assistant Head of School Mr. Curt Winter is the newest member of St. Bernard’s Administrative Team. Mr. Winter has been involved in Catholic education for 30 years and has earned a master’s degree in Educational Administration and an additional educational specialist degree (Ed.S.). He comes to SBA from Mater Dei High School in Breese, Illinois, where he served as a teacher, coach, principal, and school president. As president, he was responsible for the overall operation of the school and supervising a faculty and staff of sixty-five and a student population of 600. Mr. Winter is the proud father of three adult children and has four grandchildren. 5. The Clairvaux
Keeping A Commitment to Learning Professional Development in the world of learning is an essential part of remaining current with both knowledge and skills in the classroom. The staff at St. Bernard Academy take advantage of opportunities to sharpen their professional skills and have attended many conferences around the United States throughout the 2011-2012 school year. Mr. Clapp attended the National Science Teachers Association meeting in New Orleans and participated in sessions covering a wide range of topics from bio-diversity in the bayou ecosystem to extracting and sequencing DNA in a middle school classroom. Mr. Powers traveled to UT Knoxville for a Science Olympiad Coache’s Workshop in which the Directors of Science Olympiad for regional and state competitions gave insight about event day strategies and student preparation as well as how to tie events into everyday science curriculum. Mrs. Dwyer and Miss Bitter attended the “Mean Girls” Girl Bullying and Relational Aggression workshop in Nashville. The seminar gave new tangible methods to translate female relational aggression and how to address it and encourage empathy and positive relationships between female students. Miss Kenimer attended an annual conference for Tennessee first grade teachers in the fall. This two-day conference held in Brentwood provided innovative hands-on activities to take back to the classroom. Miss Kenimer enjoyed the networking opportunity to share ideas and success stories with other local first level teachers. All teachers of levels K-3 participated in STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) professional development. This program included all classroom curriculum supplies for A World In Motion – Engineering Inspired by Nature. On-site professional development was provided by SAE International and funded by a grant from Nissan. St. Bernard Academy was the only private school in Middle Tennessee selected to receive this training prior to its nation-wide launch. Mrs. Mila attended two roundtable discussions held by TAIS, one devoted to Division Heads and the other toward Academic Deans. She also attended an informative ERB workshop for the CTP4 and eCTP testing programs. Mrs. Flanagan discovered multiple opportunities for online professional development through Annenberg Learner. This resource provides a wide range of videos for professional development and coinciding workshop materials with background reading. Mrs. Flanagan reports that this phenomenal resource takes teachers step by step with “homework” to prepare for each next session. She has already completed two workshops on writing for middle school students through this website In spite of the numerous conferences already attended, several staff members at SBA are already planning on attending a conference at the end of June in Atlanta geared toward School Discipline. There’s no end to professional growth and the SBA staff is committed to maintaining open minds and their own commitment to learning.
Create, Collaborate, Consult, Connect
T
echnology is everywhere: in homes, at work, and at our fingertips. Saint Bernard Academy is no different, as technology is an integral part of every level of the school from prekindergarten through eighth level. Every classroom sports a SMART Board, an interactive whiteboard, which is used to project everything from class notes to educational videos to instructional presentations that are developed by students, teachers, and textbook publishers. The boards which require the use of a projector have also been used to connect with other schools and participate in web-based simulations via Skype. For the last several years, all eighth-level students have been loaned laptops for classroom use. While all students have weekly access to the PC and Mac labs in the library, two mobile computing labs were added allowing for classes to use computers outside of their assigned lab time. Beyond typing and taking notes, teachers encourage their students to use technology in many subject areas. During a unit on weather, Jen Bates’ third-level science class recently tested their meteorology skills by creating weather forecasts and posting them on YouTube. Other grade levels have incorporated video creations with the use of flip cams, iMovie, and Windows Movie Maker. Several levels and various subject areas incorporate the use of PowerPoint presentations as part of the curriculum, along with newer programs like Prezi, ToonDoo, and Pixton. Students at various grade levels use the Internet to research different topics. Hannah Dwyer often uses Webquests in her classes, which are inquiry-based learning activities in which all of the information students learn comes from the web. These collaborative activities culminate with a project and presentation. Technology is also extremely important for the teachers as they plan their instruction to meet the needs of their students. With the implementation of the ERB/CTP4 test and Children’s Progress test two years ago, the students now complete all standardized testing online. The teachers receive the results much more quickly than they had previously. The reports are also available online, and the data can be organized into customized reports for individuals and groups of students. STAR tests and Accelerated Reading quizzes given throughout the year show progress in a student’s reading level. Accelerated Math gives upper school students opportunities to practice the skills they

have learned in class and can give immediate feedback to both the student and the teacher. Teachers also make use of technology to further their own professional learning through webinars, online classes, and reading educational articles and blogs, which all lead to greater learning opportunities for the students. The effort to incorporate technology extends school wide, especially in terms of communication. For several years, the weekly newsletter “The Bear Facts” has been delivered by email to the school community, and Mr. Sabo added his weekly video newsletter three years ago. SchoolReach enables the school to deliver a recorded phone message to all families, faculty, and staff regarding announcements, reminders, and changes in schedule. School advancement director Elizabeth Wilson assists with school communication by posting on the school’s Facebook page and Twitter account. During a recent Board of Directors meeting, the board communicated with Dallas-based consultant Bob Shea via Skype. For the first time, parent conferences were scheduled with the use of SignUp Genius, a web-based tool allowing parents to select times that would best fit their schedule and receive immediate confirmation of their conference time. This summer, Saint Bernard Academy will launch its new website. The site will be a comprehensive platform that will streamline the information that is available to stakeholders. Information, events, announcements, assignments, and much more will be in one place. Among many of the new features available, students will be able to submit assignments online through the new website, and the site will also improve communication between teachers with a feature that marks due dates of major projects and tests on a shared calendar. An app button will also be available so the school’s mobile website will be directly accessible from a user’s smart phone. Technology goes far beyond email and word processing these days. As Saint Bernard Academy looks to the future, the school will continue to emphasize the use of technology to ensure that the students receive a world-class education. In the coming years, one can expect to see an increase not only in the kinds of technology that the school is using but also in the ways teachers are incorporating the technology so that the students become competent digital citizens of the 21st century.

Home and School Celebrates our Families and Fundraising! The 2010-2011 school year was a great one for St. Bernard’s Home and School Association! I was honored to serve as president of the HSA and work with such a talented and generous group of parents and volunteers. We started the year with the Fall Magazine Sale and then seamlessly rolled into the Family Fun Event followed by many amazing activities such as: Catholic Schools Week, Father/Daughter Dance, Mother/Son Vandy Baseball game, and the Spring Auction. These events and the many luncheons and receptions held at St. Bernard are not possible without the enthusiasm and dedication of our parent volunteers. Thank you for all the hard work from our committee chairs and volunteers. HSA raised close to $90,000 (not including the Fund-A-Project) last year and was able to fund projects such as: $20,000 to build and develop the new SBA website, monthly landscaping, new wooden cubbies for aftercare, and 11 desktop computers for the classrooms. A big thank you also goes out to Chuck Sabo, our Head of School, and the entire faculty and staff, whose continuous support is greatly appreciated. I am thankful for the opportunity to have served with all members of the St. Bernard Home and School Association for the last 13 years. During that time I have become convinced that there are two things paramount in the success of a Catholic elementary school. First, it takes a village. Every constituent – students, parents, faculty, staff, administration, and board – must stay focused on the success of the student and play their role well. Second, and most important, the school must be committed to knowing and loving every child. I am proud to be a part of St. Bernard Academy whose students, because of its loving environment, graduate with a strong foundation of caring for others, ready to make a positive contribution to their high school. The Home and School Association is now in the capable hands of our 2011-2012 President, Kathy Dortch. She is already doing an outstanding job. Here’s to another great year for SBA and HSA! Sincerely, May Bumpus
President, 2010-2011 Home and School Association

Alumni Spotlight Ellie Walsh (Class of 2004) receives honors at The College of William and Mary
Ellie
recently won the Lyon Gardiner Tyler Award for a Rising Senior at the College of William and Mary. This
award was instituted in 2001 through the generosity of the Harrison Tyler family in honor of Mr. Harrison Tyler’s father, Lyon Gardiner Tyler, past president of the college. Aimed at supporting work on an honors thesis, it is awarded at the beginning of the fall semester to the rising senior history major with the highest GPA, both overall and in their major. Ellie has a 3.87 in History and a 3.81 general GPA. Ellie is currently researching and writing an honors thesis focusing on the understanding and treatment of cognitive disability in antebellum times. She has access to the records of John Minson Galt II, the supervisor of Eastern Lunatic Asylum in Williamsburg in the decades before the Civil War. She also occasionally blogs about her research. In addition to her classes, Ellie has been active in community programs like Buddy Ball and Buddy Art which partner the college students with area residents who have disabilities. This year, she helped found a group to raise awareness and encourage volunteerism known as Campus Buddies.
