The AD’s Corner Welcome to another edition of The SBA Way Athletic Newsletter. Your source for all things SBA Athletics. As another season is upon us, we are so excited to see how God uses our teams this season to bring glory and honor to Him, both on and off the field. Isaiah 40:31 says, “But those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.” Ancient Hebrew culture revered But those who eagles as mighty warriors that also cared fiercely for their young. Eagles are hope in the Lord also known for their strength and courage in dangerous, turbulent weather, will renew their soaring above the storm clouds to safety. In Isaiah 40:31, God promises to strength… provide renewed strength and courage to overcome obstacles, if we trust in Him. When Christ is in the center of our lives, teams, classes, and relationships we can have a hope and a renewed strength to keep going. We Isaiah 40:31 !1

SENIOR SPOTLIGHT ALEXA PANGONAS - VOLLEYBALL (CLASS OF 2018) Rising senior Alexa Pangonas traveled with Catholic Charities of West Tennessee, over the summer, to help out at Catholic Charities of the Rio Grande Valley. Bishop Holley of Memphis offered the services of the local Catholic Charities to the Texas group providing shelter and services to immigrants at the border. Alexa volunteered with the group from Memphis representing the Catholic Diocese of Memphis. They departed from Memphis International Airport on July 3 to join the Catholic Charities of West Tennessee team already serving in the Humanitarian Respite Center with Catholic Charities of the Rio Grande in McAllen, Texas. The volunteers will be serving immigrant families as they are reunited following processing at the border. Alexa worked at the Respite Center in McAllen, TX, in the kitchen and reorganized everything! “I used my strength that God gave me and put it to work, and I loved every minute of it," stated Alexa as she continued to serve! “We moved everything into cabinets and shelves! It was great to see how the food was prepared and to help behind the scenes of all the smiles!" Alexa closed her trip by saying,“Well it’s a wrap on the CCWTN Mission Trip to McAllen,TX! This was a trip of a lifetime and it sparked many interests I didn’t know I needed! I am excited to keep doing God’s work! Every day is a blessing and we all learn something new every day!" Alexa is a student-athlete at SBA and has participated on the volleyball and bowling teams. We are extremely excited for what God is doing in her life and we pray she will continue to minister to the less fortunate doing after she leaves SBA. Job well done Alexa!
“The third day at the respite center was awesome! I started off with sorting the shoes and clothing, and then I moved back to the snack room to organize more! When I got to the snack room there were many new shelves that had to be assembled, that generous people donated! It was great to see so many people working together, for a common goal! So putting together the new shelves cleared up the room! I am so excited that the snack room is almost done, so I can take on a new task!”

The SBA WAY When working with student-athletes, a successful coach will work towards building our culture as a program and as a team. The SBA Way is not about what we do, but how we do what we do. As coaches, we want to create a championship environment, and teach our players to lead an entire team. Each player will understand the SBA Way and our athletic culture. Our culture is explained by the acronym SCHAPE:
S - Spirited, enthusiastic, excitement - Our environment will be one that is loud, excited, spirited about what we are doing. Our culture will be full of energy and our coaches will demand it. The difference about championship practices is they are full of sound, they are intense, and everyone is involved.
C - Communication enhances every human experience - Our student athletes will be leaders not only by example but also in their communication with the coach, teammates and parents. Coaches will teach each student-athlete how to communicate by calling names, delivering valid information, having a positive tone and making eye contact. If our communication follows this format, all communication is done directly, face to face, and not behind each other’s back.
H - Hard work - Working hard is very contagious and we will have a relentless persistence to achieve any goal. We will be the hardest working coaching staff and teams in our league.
A - Approach - Our approach to everything is the attitude we choose to bring to something; the path we take to arrive at our destination. Our approach will be made up of three rules: showing up early, learning something and adding value to our culture. Our teams will be mentally tough which will direct our focus to every situation.
P - Precision - Our student-athletes will have a ridiculous attention to detail. They will be taught to have the discipline to do something as well as it can be done, every single time, even if its uncomfortable or inconvenient (even if the coach isn't looking).
E - Enhance - We will contribute to an environment or unselfishly offer a service. SBA student-athletes will also be asked to leave their environment better than they found it by being contributors rather than contaminators. The SBA Way is the culture we will live and die by. Our culture will trump every coach, player and parent. Nobody is bigger than the SBA Way. !8

ATHLETIC NEWSLETTER
The Training Room - Concussion A concussion is de+ined as a “trauma-induced alteration in mental status that may or may not involve loss of consciousness.” Dr. Hyden, SBA’s team physician from Campbell Clinic, likes to explain a concussion as “an event (hit, fall, etc…) along with symptoms (headache, dizziness, etc…). You have to have both.” A concussion can be caused by a bump, blow, or jolt to the head that causes the brain to quickly move back and forth. Concussion signs and symptoms can appear immediately or not be noticed until days or even weeks after the injury. What to do: Common symptoms: Headache Dizziness Nausea More emotional (crying)
Red Flags: Can’t be awakened Worsening headache Repeated vomiting Slurred speech Sensitivity to noise and light Fatigue Confusion
1. Report symptoms: Tell a coach, parent or athletic trainer if you suspect an athlete has a concussion. 2. Get checked out: Only a health care professional experienced with concussion management can tell if a concussion has occurred and when it is OK to return to play. 3. Get plenty of rest: Immediately after the concussion is sustained, rest is recommended. This includes keeping a regular sleep routine and avoiding activities that require a lot of concentration. 4. Give time to recover: It’s important to allot time to heal. Another concussion sustained while the brain is healing can result in long-term problems or even death in rare cases. 5. Take it slow at +irst: After the physician or athletic trainer gives the OK to return to activity, an athlete shouldn't jump in all at once. The athletic trainer will work with the athlete to develop a safe plan for progressively returning to play. 6. Address concerns: If there are concerns, don’t hesitate to bring them up with a health care provider (athletic trainer, physician, etc.). Concussion Testing Standardized Concussion Assessment Tool (SCAT) test is a functional test used to establish a valid, standardized, and systemic evaluation for the immediate onset of concussions in athletes. It includes measures of orientation, immediate memory, concentration, balance, delayed recall. When an athlete is suspected of having a concussion, the athlete is administered the SCAT evaluation, along with a symptom checklist. The athlete is then referred to the doctor and must be cleared by the doctor in order to return to his/her sport. by Megan Koontz - ATC Campbell Clinic and SBA trainer
