From The Principal Dear SBA Families,

The fact that this initiative was started and accomplished by our students is one of the reasons why SBA differs from other schools. Our students understand the importance of an education, but also the importance of being well-rounded and living out God’s plan for each of their lives.

Greetings from SBA! It is difficult to believe that we are in our final quarter of this school year, and what a year it has been so far! I was recently asked what makes SBA different from other schools? Not sure where to start on that answer, because there are many reasons. Many schools can promise a top-notch education, as do we. Our scores, curriculum, faculty and AP Capstone all back up that promise. But, SBA is not just academics - it’s about preparing our students to be “Scholars & Saints.” We are blessed to partner with many families to help prepare teenagers for the journey.

We hope you enjoy reading this issue of “On Eagle’s Wings” – to be able to share in the many accomplishments of our students, faculty and alumni who are well on their way to becoming “Scholars & Saints.” God Bless and Go Eagles! Sondra Morris, Principal

Why SBA? For some, it may be the curricular offerings. For others, it could be Athletics, STEM, Robotics, Choir, Band, Theater, SGA, Cheer, Dance, Students for Life, Ambassador/Retreat Leader Program, or “Live from Varnavas Drive” Social Media Class. And, for some, it is #theNest. Whatever the reason for choosing SBA, one theme is common -- which is, we are educating the whole person. Our faculty members view teaching not as a job, but as a ministry.

FROM THE EDITOR It certainly has been another full year! Fun, but full! Please take your time and look through this issue of On Eagles’ Wings for all the outstanding things our students, faculty and staff have accomplished. Also, check out the exciting events in our alums’ lives. It’s always wonderful to learn of their news and, most importantly, how SBA impacted their lives and how they are, now, impacting others. We’re so proud of them! It’s a book full of news! We hope you enjoy it!

One of our goals this year was to have 100% of our students, faculty and staff receive CPR certification. This initiative began at the behest of a group of students who recognized the importance of being CPR-trained and how lives can be saved. After some planning and grant-writing, this has now happened. We thank Mrs. Ray Payne for her assistance and persistence in this project, as well as The Speer Charitable Trust and Baptist Hospital Foundation for their funding. It was not an easy task, but SBA Nurse, Lindsay Wilemon, and her team of trainers did it!

God Bless, Sharon Masterson, Director of Communications and Sports Information

Development

“I have dyslexia and ADD, but that’s not what defines me.”

We need your help with the Annual Fund, and we need it now. We’ve been blessed with gifts from close to 25% of the current families at SBA, but we need your help to get that number to 100%. If you’ve already been a part of helping us this year, we appreciate your support more than you know. The SBA Board, faculty and staff have risen to the challenge and met our goal of 100%. If you haven’t donated yet, would you please consider making a gift, now? You can use the donor envelope that you find in this magazine or go online at http://www.sbaeagles.org/donate to contribute. No matter the means, your support not only assists us financially, it also is a symbolic gesture that shows the commitment that we all share in providing our youth with a learning experience that enriches the whole student, and prepares them to succeed in life.

Those words belong to an SBA senior and a proud member of the SBA PLUS program. Thanks to the support of her family, friends, fellow students and teachers, that student credits the PLUS program with helping her find a way to work alongside her dyslexia and not against it, and next fall she will enroll at Mississippi State and major in Biology. SBA was founded upon the morals, values and teachings of the Roman Catholic faith, and we believe that every student can succeed. Whether that’s in the PLUS or the Honors program, in the classroom, in elevating one’s faith, in extracurriculars, the arts or on the playing field.

Later this summer I’ll be mailing you a timeline of our Fundraising plans for the 2018-2019 year. We’ve got some exciting new opportunities for you to connect, support and truly feel a part of this SBA family- starting with our First Annual Concert in the Café with John Angotti on June 16th, be sure to save the date!

Our Annual Fund, “Fly like an Eagle,” helps manage the gap between tuition income and our operating budget. The Annual Fund benefits every student every day, touching all aspects of school life, from academics to the arts, athletics, facilities and more. Your support of the SBA Annual Fund ensures that current and future students have the necessary tools to excel and reach their potential. We rely on the support of our families, friends, faculty and staff. Each tax-deductible gift makes a difference, no matter the size.

God bless and Go Eagles! Matt Stark Director of Advancement

About Our Faith FROM THE DEACON’S DESK Learning to Know By Deacon Jeff Drzycimski, Campus Minister

and recipes and names. This is the ordinary, passing knowledge that we use in our everyday lives. We fill our heads with it and it is supposed to inform our day to day thoughts, decisions and actions.

If someone were to ask you what you think we are doing at St. Benedict at Auburndale High School, how might you answer? At first, it might seem to be a silly question with a very simple answer. For most folks, the first and most immediate thing that comes to mind is that we are learning stuff. Yes, we are learning. Ok, that was easy. Let’s move on.

But, there is another kind of knowing, a much more profound and relational knowing, that not only informs us but transforms us. To fully grasp this kind of knowing, we have to go to the Scriptures. Remember in the Old Testament where we are told that Adam knew Eve? What happened? A baby was born. And when Abraham knew Sarah, a baby was born. That kind of knowing is much more profound, life-giving and life changing. To truly know someone is to have an exclusive, intimate and deeply personal relationship with them (and it’s NOT just merely a sexual relationship). That’s why Jesus tells us in Matthew’s gospel that to some of those who cry “Lord, Lord!” on Judgment Day He will tell them to depart from Him, for He never “knew” them. (Mt 7:21-23) He never had an intimate, personal relationship with them.

But, wait. What are we learning? That may take just a few more seconds to answer. Certainly, we are learning math and science, history and religion, language and communication. We are learning to be better artists and athletes. We are learning to develop extracurricular skills and interests. Yes, we are learning all that stuff. In fact, this should be the case at any and every school. But, we’re still not done. There’s more to learn.

That’s also why God described His covenant with Israel in terms of marriage. He said He would “marry” Israel “as a young man marries a virgin.” (Is 62:1-7) He desires that we have an unbreakable bond of relationship with Him that is exclusive and personal and intimate and life-giving. He wants to know us, and He wants us to know him.

We are learning about God. We are learning prayers. We are learning how to assist at Mass. We are learning how to make good, morally sound choices. We are learning to be pro-life and to respect the dignity of every human person. And, we are learning to live in harmony with others and to be at service to those in our community. That covers it, right? No, not quite. But, we’re almost there.

And, that’s why we, at St. Benedict, see it as our solemn and sacred duty to teach our students to know Jesus...not just to know about Him. Sure, you can count on us to teach all the basics – the reading, the writing and the arithmetic – and all the arts, sports and extracurriculars. We may be successful in expanding a child’s horizons and preparing them for college and the life beyond school. We may have helped make our community and our world a better place by our mere existence as an institution here in the Diocese of Memphis. But, we have ultimately failed in our mission – we have failed you, our students, our Church and our God – if every person who walks under the great rotunda of St. Benedict at Auburndale and enters these hallowed halls does not have the opportunity to learn to know Jesus.

You see, even though these are all good answers to the question of what we are learning at St. Benedict, none of them is THE answer – the single, most-important answer. We here, at SBA, feel that the number one thing being taught…and learned…at our school is to know Jesus. That’s right, we are learning to know Jesus. And, to understand fully what that means, we have to take a closer look at the word “know.” We are all familiar with the first and most common understanding of knowing. I know what time it is. I know how many days are in a week. I know the Capital of Tennessee. I know statistics and equations 4

Meet our new Theologian If you do an internet search for our new theology teacher, Dr. Mark Ginter, you will find the distinguished career of a nationally recognized theologian with more than 30 years of experience teaching. He has educated students in high school, college – undergraduate and graduate school and seminary. He is a renown Catholic author and has produced hundreds of CDs and DVDs, all in the service of the Catholic faith. But the first achievement he mentions when asked about himself is that he has been married to Diane for 31 years and is the father of seven children, including two sets of twins. Welcome to SBA, Dr. Ginter! Check out The Spirit of God which he helped translate at www.hfsbooks.com/the-spirit-of-god-congarbrown-Ginter/<http://www.hfsbooks.com/the-spirit-ofgod-congar-brown-Ginter/>

The St. Cecilia Dominican Sisters from SBA and St. Paul schools enjoyed an evening at the movies to see “Paul, The Apostle” on opening night in Memphis! Powerful! The Boys Soccer Team kicked off their Gulf Coast Cup Tournament trip in the right way, with a prayer service and blessing before leaving. Freshmen and sophomores were inspired by the live stage performance, Tolton, From Slave to Priest, a story of the first African-American Catholic priest in the United States, at the Cannon Center for Performing Arts in March. Diocese of Memphis Bishop, Martin Holley, brought the program to Memphis in commemoration of the 50th Anniversary of the death of Dr. Martin Luther King in Memphis. The prelude, “Peace, Harmony and Justice,” before the one-man, multi-media drama, included SBA Chaplain Monsignor Tom Kirk, senior Sydnei Sutton and sophomore Hayes Golightly. Campus Minister Deacon Jeff Drzycimski was a member of the steering committee. Sister Rita Marie and SBA students visited with the phenomenal actor, Jim Coleman, following the “Tolton” presentation., Heartfelt thanks to our shepherd, Bishop Martin Holley, for the opportunity to see this beautiful story of faith!

Ash Wednesday and the Stations of the Cross always offers our students the opportunity to reflect on what Our Savior did as He was sacrificed for our salvation.

About Our Faith † In Memoriam The faculty, staff and students of St. Benedict at Auburndale offer our most sincere condolences to all those families who have lost loved ones. We remember them and all our dearly beloved in our daily prayers and Masses. Archbishop Emeritus Daniel Buechlein, OSB, 79, former Bishop of Memphis (1987-92) and founder of St. Benedict at Auburndale, passed away on January 25, 2018.

The Annual trip for to the St. Cecilia Dominican Sisters (our Sisters) Motherhouse in Nashville for senior girls is fast becoming a favorite. Glorious time of peace and joy! Students were treated to a wonderful presentation by the dynamic and inspirational Catholic speaker John Sablan in early March. Sablan was in town for the annual Men’s Morning of Spirituality at the Church of the Incarnation and SBA was privileged to be one of the school’s he visited. He is the founder and President of World Ablaze, Inc. Ministry. John’s life growing up was troubled, as he was a product of physical and mental abuse. He overcame his difficulties to become the first in his family to graduate from college. He is a Third Order Dominican and has an MA in Theology from the Augustine Institute. John engaged students and faculty alike with his hopeful message of how we’re all made in God’s image and that He, God, has ordained a purpose in each of our lives “just find it and strive for it,” he says. John was excited to meet some fellow Dominicans when our Sisters spoke to him after his presentation.

Headline News STEM and Robotics takes off at SBA By Victor Hoang, Senior The following article was written by senior Victor Hoang. Victor is a robotics specialist and taught his first workshop at the kickoff of the First Lego League Robotics season in the Memphis area. His class was held at the Nolan Engineering School at CBU and he was speaking to area STEM/Robotics teachers, coaches, mentors and students. He is the son of Lien Nguyen, the Robotics Team Sponsor, and Vincent Hoang of Collierville. We welcome his insight in STEM and Robotics. He gives a nice overview of both. Victor (in red shirt above) speaks to STEM/Robotics teachers at CBU.

In 2017, St. Benedict made efforts to enhance the curriculum by adding a STEM program – science, technology, engineering, and math. STEM was created to adapt to a changing higher education and job market. The program (Project Lead the Way) was designed for students to apply knowledge learned in the classrooms towards project. Skills taught and utilized in STEM classes – critical thinking, applied mathematics, project management, and group communication – are crucial to success in college and long after higher education.

Victor (left) and Eric Ardis prepare a Robotics display for visiting 8th graders.

At SBA, students may further apply what they have learned by joining the robotics team. Over the past four years, the robotics team has competed in multiple competitions – BEST Robotics, VEX Robotics, FIRST Robotics Competition – and have won seven awards, one of which is an international accolade from VEX and the Robotics Education and Competition Foundation won by sophomore Samantha Barton (see cover photo).

At St. Benedict, the students are not merely participants and learners; they are also judges and mentors. Alumni such as Tylan Barr, Megan Brown and Elizabeth Free; upper classmen such as Chris Chiong, Zach Crawford, Benise Duhart, Victor Hoang, Allen Jimmerson, Vy Le and Emily Light; and under classmen such as Samantha Barton, Brianna Duhart and Jaden Warner have all been judges for middle and lower school robotics competitions – FIRST Lego League and VEX IQ Challenge. The school was also among those who were given thanks by the event partner for FIRST Lego League, Daniel Kohn. “I am adding my thanks to the chorus for the great FLL West TN Championship that you all helped make a reality… I look forward to working with you all next year and for years to come.” One of those student judges said this about STEM, “Education has changed from when my parents were in high school. Back then, it was simply lectures, homework, tests and maybe a project here and there. Now, the game has changed. I don’t believe we should simply stop at applying what we learn in the classroom. We need to learn how to present our findings to all sorts of audiences.” Last year, only two STEM classes were offered – “Introduction to Engineering Design” and “Principles of Engineering.” In the fall of 2018, the school will boast of additional courses – “Principles of Engineering Honors,” “Advanced Engineering Dual Enrollment” and “Introduction to Drones.” Librarian Lisa DuFur set up a drone obstacle course in the library. It was a popular lunch-time activity and generated media coverage across the Memphis area. While it does seem daunting to join the STEM program, much less participate and/or judge robotics, let’s all remember what Samantha Barton has to say about it. “Don’t refrain from entering anything you’ve made because you’re afraid of your competition. Just because there are thousands of entries from around the world doesn’t mean you can’t win—it’ll just be more rewarding when you do.”

SBA’s rookie Robotics Team captured the judges’ heart at their first VEX competition. As mentioned and evidenced by the cover Samantha Barton’s photograph was a winner against 1,500 teams from around the world and the engineering notebook beat out VEX World’s teams. The judges loved our energy, creativity, etc. VEX World is known as the Olympics of the Robotics World. It is so renowned that CBS and ESPN broadcasts the tournament this month. This is a prestigious honor for Samantha and SBA, winning an award at VEX World as a first-year team. Not many schools, if any at all, are able to boast of such an achievement. (Samantha’s design graces the cover of this issue of On Eagles’ Wings.) In January, St. George’s School had asked SBA for help judging their competition with 30+ teams. We are so proud of these students for giving up a long Saturday with the University of Memphis’s STEM Ambassadors, CBU’s engineering students and area teachers. Additionally, they were invited to judge the VEX State Competition with Vanderbilt University and Brentwood Academy and they worked with community leaders such as Cummins, MLGW, TVA, and even the University of Memphis and CBU professors. TVA has partnered with SBA’s team in providing scholarships for VEX.

Team members are - Allen Jimmerson (Engineering Notebook), Samantha Barton (Art for the Engineering Notebook), Lauren Hagood (Website Design), Nicholas Schmitz (Robot Build), Lee Arnold (Programmer for Team B), Chris Mata (Robot Build), Alec Lazarini (Programmer), Eric Ardis (Team Captain for Team A & Robot Design & Build), Emily Light (Robot Design & Art for Engineering Notebook), Vy Le (Art for Engineering Notebook), Jaden Warner (Researcher for Engineering Notebook), Chris Chiong (Robot Build), Brianna Duhart (Exceptional Programmer), Dustin Tran (Team Captain for Team B & Robot Build), Carlos Rodriguez (Robot Build) and Victor Hoang (Engineering Notebook Executor).

Headline News Grant provides CPR training for everyone at SBA Through a grant received from the Speer Charitable Trust and support from The Red Cross and Baptist Hospital, St. Benedict has begun training the entire school (faculty, staff and student body) in CPR. St. Benedict is reported to be the only school in the state training each person associated with the school during the school day.

How did it happen? She says, “Like many good things – it started with a conversation. That conversation was shared with a few people, one being Mrs. Ray Payne. Ray set the ball in motion and was diligent enough to garner us the opportunity to get everybody trained. Funding was

School Nurse Lindsay Wilemon, RN is the primary instructor beginning with training teachers from Our Lady of Perpetual Help Elementary School in Germantown. Through the grant, SBA also provides training for others in the community, as well as their own students and staff. Why CPR? SBA Principal Sondra Morris says, “We’re blessed at St. Benedict to partner with our families to provide not only a rigorous academic education, but also a well-rounded education that prepares our students to be Saints and Scholars. CPR is an example of the importance we place on the gift of life and, if by providing this training to our students and faculty, we save even one life it is worth it! Now we have close to 800 individuals trained to assist those who might need assistance. That’s an accomplishment!”

made possible by the Speer Charitable Trust, Baptist Hospital Foundation and St. Benedict. People volunteered to be trained to serve as instructors, we had our full-time School Nurse work out the logistics plan to make it happen and another important aspect – we had the buy-in of our students, faculty and staff. Some gave up their lunch time in addition to the class time to make sure training was completed. It was quite the undertaking, but our ‘family’ at ‘The Nest’ pulled together and it was accomplished. I’m very proud of them.”

Why the entire school? Morris says, “The St. Benedict community is like a huge family. Within our family we have suffered the loss of loved ones, several due to heart related issues. Our student section is named ‘The Nest’ in memory of Gerold Blum (SBA graduate from the Class of 2013) who passed away the semester after he graduated. Many others from our SBA family have also lost loved ones in situations where CPR training may have benefitted.”

Representative David Kustoff (TN-8) bestowed Congressional Nominations to seniors Bubba Erwin for West Point and Gauge Nesbitt for Naval Academy in January.

Sophomore Adam Brigance was honored at the recent Memphis Central Rotary Club meeting with their Character Achievement Award. This annual award and scholarship is presented to students who, in spite of many obstacles, strive to succeed. In Adam’s essay he wrote, “I choose to accept how God made me.” Adam has overcome several challenges, but all with a diligent and positive attitude.

St. Jude Scholars We are so proud of these two young women, sophomore Maggie Alexander and senior Katherine Farler, who were selected for the 3rd Annual St. Jude Science Scholars of Tomorrow Symposium on March 1, 2018. Only about 100 students from 30 schools from Shelby County were selected to attend the event at the Marlo Thomas Center for Global Education and Research for a day of tours, classes and lectures from St. Jude staff about the variety of careers in science and health care. Maggie and Katherine applied and received teacher recommendations from Honors Biology teacher Patsy Rush and Algebra II Honors teacher Andrea Smith, respectively. The teachers were invited to also attend with the students. The students were recommended for showing strong interest in pursuing science and health care-related careers. They were then evaluated and selected by a committee of St. Jude faculty and staff. Both students aspire to study and to follow careers in science in the areas of microbiology, biomedical engineering and research. These young women are budding scientists representing SBA STEM and Science! Well done, ladies! Brianna Duhart has been selected to participate in the Engineering Volunteers for Tenth Graders (E-VOL10) at the University of Tennessee-Knoxville. E-VOL10 provides an introduction to chemistry and awareness of engineering careers. The program will be hosted July 15-20, 2018. Only 32 students were selected to participate. Students live within a residence hall on the UT campus and engage in chemistry, ACT preparation, compete in engineering challenges and tour an engineering industrial plant. Throughout the program, students team up to apply what was learned and work on an engineering design project.

On And Off Campus SBA enjoys the Eclipse

While skies were darkened in many areas, SBA’s sky drenched the students as they made their way to the football field, but spirits weren’t dampened as we studied, did mathematical calculations and experiments and just plain enjoyed the Solar Eclipse on August 21.

To end the day, the students spent time extensively researching their Memphis-themed researched argument topics for the English 1020 final essay. Each student left the U of M campus with at least three to four more scholarly sources to add to their researched argument essay. The librarians enthusiastically complimented the students on their behavior, intelligence, and excitement for their newfound research and strategies. It was a wonderful experience and all the students agreed it was incredibly helpful for their current research and for their future college careers. They were very excited about the day and about getting a glimpse of the excitement of spending a day working on a college campus.

Seniors make the grade

English Dual Enrollment gets a taste college research and resources

Seniors Joey Zazzara, Gabriel Mendez and Phillip Tovar (all Boy Scouts through St. AnnBartlett Church) were recognized at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in January for earning the Pope Pius XII Religious Scouting Award. They also earned the Pillar of Faith Award after completing requirements for all four religious awards that scouting offers. This requires active involvement in Catholic scouting starting in the first grade. Bishop Holley celebrated Mass and presented the awards to these worthy young men for their many years of hard and diligent work. In early May, they received their Eagle Scout Awards and held their Court of Honor.

Mrs. Zeanah’s Dual Enrollment English Class took a field trip to the University of Memphis McWherter Library. The seniors started their day with a tour to learn about every level of the physical library to start, including a tour of the special collections, microforms and government documents. The Dual Enrollment students, with the assistance of four University of Memphis librarians and staff, then received instruction on the online resources and databases available through the university. The students practiced navigating some of the databases U of M subscribes to (there are around 500) before presenting their findings to each other. 20

Annual Catholic Schools Meetings at SBA

We share with Catholic Charities

In a monthly Principals’ meeting moderated by Mrs. Donato SBA welcomed principals from Catholic Schools in the Diocese. In celebration of community servers during Catholic Schools Week, SBA hosted an out-ofuniform donation day for Catholic Charities of West Tennessee. CCWT Executive Director Richard Hackett (center) accepted a check in the amount of $710 from SBA Assistant Principal Beth Fischer, SGA President Alex Miller and Campus Ministry Director Deacon Jeff Drzycimski. We are always proud to partner with CCWT in their ministry to God’s children.

SBA is always honored to host Dr. Colleen Butterick, Director of School Counseling and Mrs. Janet Donato, Superintendent of Catholic Schools for their Schools Counselors luncheon meeting.

SBA thanks those who serve us

SBA Students for Life Best in the State

During Catholic Schools Week, we celebrated our nation with community servers. SBA was honored, this year, to have Memphis Police Director Michael Rallings, SBA Alum (2012) Louis Focht, Staff Assistant for Congressman David Kustoff (TN-8) and District Representative Jennifer Martinez for State Senator Brian Kelsey and other servers in our community join our Student Ambassadors and faculty in a morning reception to thank these servers for all they do for SBA.

In the fall and in January, the SBA Students for Life Club brings the witness for the sanctity of human life to the school. This year, the SBA Chapter of the National Students for Life was recognized by the district organization based in Kentucky. In the fall, the SBA group was recognized for collecting the largest amount of new baby items in the district for pregnancy centers Birthright and Life Choices. 21

On And Off Campus In addition, Students for Life of America “audits” the chapters they work with just so it’s easier to track pro-life progress across the country. The auditing standards entail a rating scale of 1-6 (1 being a basically dead group, 6 being a rock star group). The number of events a group does combined with how many of the pillars (Effective Education, Industry Impact, Rapid Response, Supportive Services, Public

The SBA Way Excelling: Going Beyond the Average From the AD Caleb Marcum

What does it mean to be a Christian athlete? In the past few months we have seen Super Bowl champions, NBA stars, Olympic athletes, and college football national champions give all glory and honor to God after incredible performances. They express that, without God’s help, they would not be able to accomplish the things they did. So, what does it mean to be a Christian athlete? This is a question that most ordinary people would answer by saying that praying before and after a game and asking God to help them win is being a Christian athlete. Others would say taking a knee in an end-zone after scoring a touchdown means that they are a Christian athlete. All of those situations may involve Christian athletes, but that is not what being a Christian athlete is all about. I recently read an article that explained a Christian athlete. I am not sure who deserves the credit for this article, but it encompasses everything about a Christian athlete. It stated, “Being a Christian athlete doesn’t mean praying for your team to win. God doesn’t give an edge to those who pray, over those who don’t; hard work does that. Being a Christian athlete means competing for Christ, in a way in which you always give your all for Him, and win or lose, you thank Him for the ability and opportunity to play. It means giving all the glory and honor to God, no matter the outcome, because you trust in His plan for your life.” This article describes the epitome of the Christian athlete. It also reminds me of a story in the Bible in Genesis 24 about a woman named Rebekah. Many of you may know about this story, but it is a good reminder of being a Christian athlete and going beyond the average to excel for the glory of God. Many have called this example, the Rebekah Principle. Abraham sent his servant to find a wife for his son Isaac. He sent his servant back to his homeland in search for this woman. As the servant approached the town, he saw several women drawing water from the well, which was customary at the time for women to do. The servant approached Rebekah and asked her for a drink of water. Rebekah responded by saying not only can you have a drink, but I will also draw water to feed your camels. What a response from Rebekah! Scholars have pointed out that camels, after a long journey, could drink up to twenty or thirty gallons of water per camel. Rebekah not only was going to give this stranger a drink, but she went beyond the average and offered water to his camels, adding almost two or three hours more work. Think about it this way. A woman could only carry roughly five gallons of water at a time. She had to lower the bucket into the well, pull it back out, and carry it to the watering trough over and over again. In addition, this stranger could have been traveling with close to ten camels. Would you do this for a stranger? The Rebekah principle came about from this event. Leadership experts have stated that today’s philosophy in many organizations is minimum effort for maximum expectations. How little can I do and how much will I receive? The Rebekah Principle epitomizes the Christian athlete. Her philosophy was maximum effort, for minimum expectation. How much can I give without receiving anything in return? I once heard a member of the Super Bowl Champion Philadelphia Eagles comment that he saw a difference in Christian athletes in the locker room, playing field and off the field. He stated that when things were bad, they were calm. When things seemed like they were spinning out of control, they were steady and quiet leaders. This is what it means to be a Christian athlete. To work as hard as you can and go beyond the average, not for earthly rewards, but to give all the glory and honor to HIM. This is true success and the true meaning of being a Christian athlete. 23

The SBA Way

When working with student-athletes, a successful coach will work towards building our culture as a program and as a team. The SBA Way is not about what we do, but how we do what we do. As coaches, we want to create a championship environment, and teach our players to lead an entire team. Each player will understand the SBA Way and our athletic culture. Our culture is explained by the acronym SCHAPE: S - Spirited, enthusiastic, excitement - Our environment will be one that is loud, excited, spirited about what we are doing. Our culture will be full of energy and our coaches will demand it. The difference about championship practices is they are full of sound, they are intense, and everyone is involved. C - Communication enhances every human experience - Our student-athletes will be leaders not only by example but also in their communication with the coach, teammates and parents. Coaches will teach each student-athlete how to communicate by calling names, delivering valid information, having a positive tone and making eye contact. If our communication follows this format, all communication is done directly, face to face, and not behind each other’s back. H - Hard work - Working hard is very contagious and we will have a relentless persistence to achieve any goal. We will be the hardest working coaching staff and teams in our league. A - Approach - Our approach to everything is the attitude we choose to bring to something; the path we take to arrive at our destination. Our approach will be made up of three rules: showing up early, learning something and adding value to our culture. Our teams will be mentally tough which will direct our focus to every situation. P - Precision - Our student-athletes will have a ridiculous attention to detail. They will be taught to have the discipline to do something as well as it can be done, every single time, even if its uncomfortable or inconvenient (even if the coach isn’t looking). E - Enhance - We will contribute to an environment or unselfishly offer a service. SBA student-athletes will also be asked to leave their environment better than they found it by being contributors rather than contaminators.

Bowling makes it to State for the 16th appearance

The Boys and Girls Bowling Teams finished as State Runners-up in their respective divisions in their 16th appearance in State Bowling Championships. The girls finished as Region Champion and the Boys were Region Runner-up. Finishing 3rd in State Individuals was senior Nick Agnew and junior Alexa Pangonas finished 5th in the women’s individuals. The SBA Bowling Dynasty continues! Recently, Athletic Director Caleb Marcum welcomed the new Bowling Coaching Staff – Assistant Coach Tommy Martin and Head Coach Deacon Jeff Drzycimski. Both coaches have extensive resumes in bowling circles. Together they have had over 75 years combined bowling and coaching experience. Coach Martin is one of the most-sought after and well-respected coaches in the Mid-South and he brings that expertise to SBA with a strong focus on developing fundamental skills in student athletes. He is a PBA Champion and a member of the Memphis Bowling Hall of Fame. Coach Drzycimski is a skilled bowler, with scores in the high 200s and is happy to have Coach Martin, who helped found the original SBA Bowling Team years ago, back to help continue the SBA bowling winning tradition. 24

She was named the Director of Family Life for the newly established St. Philip Institute of Catechesis and Evangelization in July. The Catholic East Texas magazine published an article about the St. Philip Institute and also did an interview with Deanna about her accomplishments and how she has accepted this mission. Please read this wonderful article about Deanna and her beautiful family, “God has been so Faithful” at https://issuu.com/catholiceasttexas/docs/cet_fall_2017_issu She tells us, “I have always felt that my Catholic education has played a significant role in my formation, and I am grateful for the seeds that were planted and nourished during my years at SBA!” So very proud of you, Deanna, living the Faith! 2009 grad Stephen Whitney is highlighted as a member of the Memphis Flyer’s 20 Under 30 2018 Class cover story! Check it out! Stephen Whitney was a freshman in college when a deep fryer caught on fire, burning his arms, legs, and feet. “It was life-changing. It made me think, what do I truly enjoy? I asked, ‘What is my purpose, and how can I fulfill that purpose?” Through music, was the answer he came up with. “Everyone and their brother in Memphis can play an instrument,” he says. “I realized that there’s nobody helping these musicians. Who is getting them gigs? I wanted to be the one making it happen.” He co-founded Whitney Entertainment Brokers, which has put on more than 150 live events in the city, and in 2013, while still a student at University of Memphis, joined the Blues Foundation, where he works as the Membership, Sales, and Production Coordinator. He also founded the city’s first African-American craft brew festival, the Taste the Flavors Craft Brew Event, which benefits the Sickle Cell Foundation of Tennessee. “Memphis’ strength is that we’re so rich in history — civil rights, music, and food. Another strength is, that we’re a diverse city. I want to connect the dots and help groups connect with each other.” From The MemphisFlyer, January 25, 2018 https://www.memphisflyer.com/memphis/memphis-flyer20-30-the-class-of-2018/Content?oid=10865488

Alexa Armstrong (SBA 2013) recently shared with us her extraordinary experiences and education after graduating from SBA. She is now with Entertainment Tonight in Los Angeles By Alexa Armstrong After graduating from SBA in 2013, I started my freshman year at the University of Alabama. For my second semester of college, I spent five months studying abroad in London, England. While abroad, I explored various places in Europe and even took my first film class. Starting my sophomore year of college, I became a member of Alabama Greek Missions. Alabama Greek Missions, now known as Capstone Collegiate Missions, was a student-led organization that traveled every year to Nicaragua to build homes, donate supplies and lend a helping hand to the villages of Trapichito. While at the University of Alabama, I began working at WVUA-23 News as a production and news intern. WVUA-23 News helped me to gain experience in production, reporting, and producing the news. After gaining experience at WVUA-23, I participated in the Communication and Information Sciences in LA program through the University of Alabama. With this program, I learned more about the entertainment industry through an internship with Young Hollywood, discussion panels, and courses led by an on-site instructor.

I graduated from the University of Alabama in December of 2016 with a Bachelor of Arts in Communication and Information Sciences. My focus was on telecommunication and film. After graduation, I moved to Los Angeles to pursue an internship at Entertainment Tonight. After a little over a month as an intern, I was promoted to production assistant and started working full time. On January 9, 2018, I celebrated my one-year anniversary working with Entertainment Tonight. The biggest thing I’ve learned about working in Los Angeles and in the entertainment industry is that it’s all about networking. I landed my internship with Entertainment Tonight by meeting a previous intern while studying abroad in 2014. Through that intern, I was able to learn more about the Entertainment Tonight environment and get a contact email. From there it was all about my resume and a phone interview to get the gig. My daily tasks at Entertainment Tonight consist of working with directors to piece together projects, transcribing interviews, and logging interviews. The best parts about this job is that for certain events I can shadow field producers as they go out and conduct interviews. So far, I have been able to shadow on several different field shoots but, my favorites have definitely been the Guardians of the Galaxy, Valerian, and Dunkirk press junkets. Working at Entertainment Tonight has helped me to get a start in the industry and from here I hope to continue to learn and move up the ladder into more television focused roles. 35
