“Businesses may need to adjust their data collection methods for primary research in other countries, because some methods do not easily transfer across national frontiers.”

Conducting International Market Research As corporations expand globally, they need to correspondingly gather more knowledge about customers in other countries. Although marketing researchers follow the same basic steps for international studies as for domestic ones, they often face some very different challenges. U.S. organizations can tap many secondary resources as they research global markets. One major information source is the U.S. Government, which offers a wealth of information through its dedicated website, Export.gov. Here, marketers can find marketing research, business leads, and other data on international trade and intellectual property protection drawn from sources across the U.S. government. The site’s trove of international marketing research is organized by country (more than

130 nations) and by industry (more than 110 business sectors). Personalized counseling and customized research are available (the latter for a fee), as well as guidance on improving international business strategy, targeting markets overseas, evaluating international business partners, and increasing brand awareness around the world. U.S. trade show organizers can help get attracting foreign visitors. When conducting international studies, companies must be prepared to deal with both language issues— communicating their message in the most effective way—and cultural issues, or capturing local citizens’ interests while avoiding missteps that could unintentionally offend them. Companies also need to take a good look at a country’s business environment, including political and economic

conditions, trade regulations affecting research studies and data collection, and the potential for short– and long-term growth. Many marketers recommend tapping local researchers to investigate foreign markets. Businesses may need to adjust their data collection methods for primary research in other countries, because some methods do not easily transfer across national frontiers. Face-to-face interviewing, for instance, remains the most common method for conducting primary research outside the United States.

Online Connectivity and The Evolution of

Executive Director

Business Organization: Three Waves

Dr. Don B. Bradley III

Development Intern Abstract

James Vire

Recent historical studies of major changes in economic structures conclude that such changes do not occur as single events, but as a series of developments, often called waves, that occur over an extended period of time. The emergence and subsequent development of online connectivity and the changes in business practices that have been driven by that emergence and development are, it is argued, one such major change in economic structures. This paper explores the phenomenon and identifies three distinct waves that have occurred to date in the evolution of economic structures driven by the spread of worldwide electronic connectivity.
