Tip

of the Week

“For some, success is growing a business only to the point where it provides a comfortable living, rather than a larger, perhaps even a publicly listed, company.” Skills and Knowledge: Resources at Start-up At the beginning of a new venture, every potential entrepreneur will bring with them a set of skills gained over their life course through education, work experience, or even from managing a venture previously. A lone entrepreneur will have a limited set of skills, while a management team may bring a wider variety of capabilities and experience. Depending on the sector, ambition of the entrepreneur and the scope of the firm, potentially at least, the necessary skills will vary. It is important to consider, therefore, what skills are available at the outset and what the nascent entrepreneur might need now, and in the future, and why certain skills are important. There has been some research to identify exactly what skill sets provide the best opportunities to create a successful firm. Studies generally apply the resource-based view of the firm to explain how the entrepreneur’s or founding management team’s capabilities and human capital have a fundamental influence on the performance of the firm. However, the results are inconclusive and it is advisable to approach this subject with caution. The issues are complex. Studies that have been conducted range across a broad assortment of contexts in terms of sector, geography, economic climate, institutional regulation, gender and son on. Studies also use a variety of measures for success—for example, profit, turnover or number of employees—and are not necessarily comparable. The inconclusive results may be because of the different measures used and different contexts investigated. It is worth considering also that such measures may not accord with the criteria of success entrepreneurs themselves apply. For some, success is growing a business only to the point where it provides a comfortable living, rather than a larger, perhaps even a publicly listed, company. The ambition or motivation to achieve the latter will require a particular and very different skill set from a lifestyle business. Nevertheless, and despite this range of caveats, it is still important to consider the types of knowledge, skills, and capabilities that may be relevant when starting a new venture.

A Replicative Study

Dr. Don B. Bradley III

Pricing is an important decision in small business management. This paper explores the factors that impact small business owners/managers in setting and changing prices. Satisfactory profits, costs and competitors’ decisions seem to be the basic factors that affect setting and changing prices among small business owners/managers. Additionally we explore non-price tools used by small business as an alternative way to compete. (pg. 26)
