“...a variety of mobile apps (applications)...help customers make buying decisions and use its products more efficiently.” Emerging Trends: Apps Help Business Marketers Go Mobile Now that many business customers carry mobile devices, such as smartphones and tablet computers, business marketers are stepping up their use of mobile marketing to reach buyers, sellers, and users. For example, Emerson Climate Technologies, which makes thermostats and other climatecontrol equipment, offers a variety of mobile apps (applications) to help customers make buying decisions and use its products more efficiently. Another ECT app allows sellers to show homeowners how much energy and money will be saved by installing new, high efficiency systems. A third app helps technicians diagnose malfunctioning climate-control systems and identify the appropriate replacement parts needed to make repairs. CBS Outdoor, which markets advertising space on billboards, offers a map app that allows advertising agencies and media buyers to pinpoint its North American billboard locations. The app also shows nearby transportation facilities and offers access to a gallery of billboard ads, to help agencies evaluate traffic patterns and plan creative strategies. The office supply retailer Office Max reaches out to small businesses with apps that promote weekly product specials, help customers find the closest store and check loyalty rewards, show customers’ purchase history for quick and easy reordering, and enable customers to order copies of printed documents on the go. As an added convenience, Office Max will send a text alert when a customer’s print order is ready to be picked up.

Back to the Future: Adaptation and Precognition in Venture Capital

Executive Director Dr. Don B. Bradley III

Development Intern James Vire

In this paper we examined two factors considered vital for success in the venture capital industry: adaptation to changing conditions; and an ability to predict future trends. We conducted semi-structured interviews with eleven venture firms, asking about how they planned to adapt their investment strategies, on the stage and industry of companies in which to invest, and the future of their industry. We compared their views with industry results published year later in the National Venture Capital Association (NVCA) Yearbook, and found that the VC industry is undergoing significant changes that have farreaching implications on the entrepreneurial landscape.
