Dear Readers, Universitas Gadjah Mada has always been committed in producing innovative products and inventions that will benefit the industry and society at large. This is done in the hope to strengthen and advance our national independence and economic resilience. Aside from facilitating innovators and inventors that are composed of lecturers and researchers, it is also the university’s priority to encourage students to produce innovations through creativity and digital technology. One way this is done is through Innovative Academy, a program managed by the Directorate of Business Development and Incubation in collaboration with various industry partners, that facilitates the creation of a startup business to create innovative industrial and societal solutions. The Innovative Academy curriculum is developed with a semi-structured approach that is intended to equip participants with the needed entrepreneurship content while also strengthening their technological capacity. It is hoped that the resulting technological innovation will be able to bring about large socio-economic impacts. Innovative Academy activities are unique, as it involves participants from various scientific fields (STEM, socio-humanities, and economics) that are driven by a collaborative spirit to solve social-community issues. Participants are rigorously selected, guided, and mentored to develop new cultures in managing technological based startups. Finishing the program, teams are then introduced to various actors in the startup ecosystem; such as venture capitalists, angel investors, and other acceleration programs. Up to now, Innovative Academy has produced a number of prospective startups that are now entering the acceleration stage, ready to be introduced to investors and startup business developers. Some of our startups have received positive public acknowledgement, both nationally and at the international level. In the future, Innovative Academy activities are expected to involve more industry players, potential investors / accelerators, and mentors to improve the program’s quality; so that more innovations could emerge with greater level of technological mastery, resulting in greater impact for the public.
Dr. Hargo Utomo, M.B.A., M.Com. BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT & INCUBATION DIRECTOR UNIVERSITAS GADJAH MADA
