eemingly born to champion beautification in the areas of preservation, protection, and restoration of historic resources including natural, architectural, or cultural, Kellam de Forest will receive Santa Barbara Beautiful’s 2016 Jacaranda Award for Outstanding Community Service. As a founding member of the Pearl Chase Society and a longtime chair of their Preservation Committee, Kellam has been involved in all aspects of their important preservation work. “Kellam is an outstanding director and contributor to the Pearl Chase Society,” shared Steve Dowty, Pearl Chase Society President. “He exemplifies the Society’s mission to preserve the rich architectural and landscape history of Santa Barbara. Approaching his 90th year he remains the activist and spokesman, attending all HLC and ABR design meetings.” Kellam not only serves as the guardian of his native city but also maintains his family’s creative legacy. Kellam’s father and grandfather, Lockwood junior and senior, were the acclaimed landscape architect and nationally recognized painter. Kellam continued in his family’s artistic spirit during his professional life by consulting in the motion
picture and TV industries. “Santa Barbara has its own feel, its own ambience, and its own identity,” Kellam has shared. He not only talks about preserving Santa Barbara’s historic, beautiful architectural tradition, he personifies the very traditions he has been advocating to protect. Kellam also played a major role in the creation of a new Historic Element in the City of Santa Barbara’s 20-year General Plan Update. A partial list of Kellam’s championed projects include Franceschi House, Moody Sisters Tea/House Cottage, Santa Barbara Botanic Garden meadow restoration, Mattei’s Tavern landmark designation, and Lemon Scented Gums designation as historic trees at the Central Library. This award adds to his many recent awards including; the 2010 Pearl Chase Historic Preservation and Conservation Award bestowed by the Santa Barbara Trust for Historic Preservation, the 2013 Santa Barbara Award from the city Historic Landmarks Commission, the 2014 preservation steward by the Montecito Association, and the 2009 Preservation Hero from the Library of American Landscape History.

riving through the richly wooded, garden-filled estate, visitors can discover the historic and recently restored Marilyn Horne Main House; this year’s President’s Award winner. Situated on a stunning ten acres, the former Miraflores estate, originally the site of the Santa Barbara Country Club, has been home to the Music Academy of the West since 1951. Purchased in 1915 by Mr. and Mrs. John Percival Jefferson, the property took on its distinctive Mediterranean revival style elegance under the direction of architect Reginald G. Johnson and landscape architect Paul G. Thiene. The conservation of this structure was the number one priority for Schipper Construction, who meticulously restored the original building to “bring back” its original charm – as envisioned by Johnson and Thiene – by adhering to the original design, architectural, and landscape features. In addition to seismic retrofitting and replacement of early twentieth century electrical and plumbing; restorative features were meticulously executed. Original exterior windows and doors were removed, restored, and re-installed, the carved entry stone arches were lovingly refurbished, the back courtyard terrace was salvaged and completely restored by replicating the original concrete pattern of the patio floor. Additionally, the original decorative ceramic tiles of the reflecting pool were cleaned and restored to their original glory. The dedication on the part of the Music Academy of the West to preserve, renovate, and bring back the luster of an aged building on a historic campus and by Schipper Construction in restoring such an important piece of Santa Barbara’s history are the reasons that the Marilyn Horne Main House won the President’s Award. This recent renovation will provide the best possible experience for guests and the community at the Music Academy’s world class facility.

The Santa Barbara Botanic Garden Native Choice Award
for Leadership in the use of California Native Plants
Stevenson’s Residence: 845 Norma Way, Goleta CA

ncorporating more than 40 different types of California native plants, the Stevenson property takes full advantage of our state’s rich botanic diversity to create a distinctly Californian sense of place. The landscape plan integrates water conservation design with low water use native plant choices to serve as a model of beauty and sustainability. With that in mind, The Santa Barbara Botanic Garden is pleased to present this year’s Native Choice Award for leadership in the use of California native plants to Martin and Elizabeth Stevenson for their residence at 845 Norma Way. Situated between two forks of San Jose Creek, the Stevenson’s approximately 10,000 square foot property serves as an inspiration to homeowners who would like to replace their lawn with a more creative and water thrifty design. Like many Santa Barbara residences, this property was formerly landscaped with non-native ivy groundcover in the front yard and non-native hedges and a lawn in the backyard, all irrigated with sprinklers. Now this space is filled with more than forty native plant species (primarily Santa Barbara-South Coast genetic stock), including groundcovers, shrubs, aquatic plants, trees and wildflowers. Together these beautiful natives offer year round color, texture and variety while providing habitat and food for local wildlife. In working with the Stevensons, Daniel Wilson, president and founder of Wilson Environmental Contracting, focused on water conservation. Sprinklers were eliminated and much of the site’s water supply now comes from carefully redirected
roof runoff moving through sculpted soils to become cisternstored rainwater. Supplemental irrigation, when needed (approximately every 22-25 days), is delivered via drip emitters. All hardscape is permeable and includes cobble driveway, unit paver patio and paths, and mulched or decomposed granite paths. The property is heavily mulched with on site recycled wood chips created from a non-native sycamore species which was removed. Native plants Wilson selected for the Stevensons include: giant chain fern, holly-leaf cherry, ironwood, currant, chaparral currant, mountain mahogany, quail bush, oldman sage, white sage, five kinds of buckwheats (California, desert, island, sea-cliff, and St. Catherine’s lace), two kinds of dudleyas, monkeyflower, three kinds of manzanitas (Howard McMinn, Sunset, Carmel Sur), groundcover ceanothus, textile rush, deergrass, hummingbird sage, woodmint, Island alum root/coral bells, scouring rush, iris-leaved rush, yucca, snowberry, barberry, four kinds of aquatic plants (spike-rush, rush, cattail, sedge), and California poppies. The Santa Barbara Botanic Garden is a private nonprofit charity that has been conserving California’s native plants for over 90 years. Founded by eminent plant ecologist Frederic Clements in 1926, the Garden is one of the nation’s oldest botanical gardens focused exclusively on native plants. It’s innovative platform was the combination of public displays, scientific research, education, and promotion of landscaping with native plants. In 2014, the Santa Barbara Botanic Garden established the Native Choice Award to recognize leadership by an individual or organization in the use of California native plants in a designed landscape and celebrate the people and the plants that make Santa Barbara uniquely beautiful.

ith a body of work as richly varied as his personality and abilities, Leon Olson emerged on the Santa Barbara scene in 1977, after a career in Lincoln, Nebraska. A graduate of the University of Nebraska school of architecture, he had recently sold a design / build construction business that he and his partners initiated in 1969 which focused on residential and multi-family projects. But now Leon, new to California, was ready for something different. His plan? Art. A few days after arriving in Santa Barbara, Leon discovered what the city could provide when he experienced his first “Summer Solstice” parade. Leon was “home.” Quickly determining that such an open and creative venture was a good place to put his energy, he became a part of the Mime Caravan Board, helping transform the Summer Solstice event into Summer Solstice Inc., a non-profit company which continues to sponsor the popular Summer Solstice parade and festival. He served on its board in many roles for eight years. Not completely giving up his interest and experience in the development and construction of residential properties, even while he pursued the skills of a fine artist and non-profit leader, Leon was led to “Homes for People” where he joined the Board and served as treasurer for many years. During his term on the board, Homes for People helped 63 Santa Barbara families build their homes. In 1989 he joined the Board of the Contemporary Arts Forum and served a term as President. He was Cota Street Studios integral in their Finance Committee and helped to develop and then served on the Million Dollar Raffle Committee for six very successful years. Leon re-emerged in the design / build industry big time in 2006 with the Laguna Vieja development, a Santa Barbara Beautiful Award winner in a collaboration with Jeff Shelton. Since then he and the team have been cooking with winning projects, Leon providing business leadership on a team including Architect Jeff Shelton and Contractor Dan Upton, who have created About Leon... several successful collaborations over the years. 50 years Architectural and Contractor Business His non-profit and arts work also continued. STABLISHING A FOUNDATION FOR PARTICIPANTS TO COEXIST IN A CREATIVE SPACE, The Santa Barbara Center for Art, Science & Technology (SBCAST) founders believe that Art, Science and Technology are intertwined. This year’s 2016 Business in Art Award recipient, Alan Macy, is the founder of SBCAST. Fully creative, innovative, environments can be established by recognizing and embracing the links between these concepts. The ability to innovate, supported by a motivating environment, is encouraged when needed resources are present. SBCAST resources include community, communication facilitation, physical infrastructure and tools. The Alan Macy SBCAST founders believe that fusion collaborations, among “cylinders of excellence,” are required to solve vexing problems of human endeavor. In addition to SBCAST, Alan is the Research and Development Director, past President, and a founder of BIOPAC Systems, Inc. Alan has spent his career developing data collection and analysis systems used widely by life scientists. His current focus is on a complex web of applied science studies with a special emphasis into human interactions

between perception and technology. With his vision in the development of SBCAST he will continue to explore the relationships between art and technology. Recently SBCAST received an honor from the AIA California Council. The Business in Art Award was established by the City Arts Advisory Committee in 2005. This award is given to an individual or entity that conducts business in the Santa Barbara area. It may include being a retail or commercial establishment, a sole practitioner, a partnership or a professional corporation: one that exhibits outstanding support of arts activity in our community in ways that create a stronger, more vibrant arts environment in Santa Barbara and enriches the lives of both residents and visitors.
This year’s Business in Art Award, The Macijauskas, is named after Alan’s Lithuanian origin name and tailored to the essence of his passionate interests in art, science and technology. The Macijauskas is a work of art envisioned, engineered, and custom-built by a team of Alan’s impassioned comrades in art. The Macijauskas incorporates the architectural aesthetic and ethos of SBCAST in an elegant fusion of order, chaos, and interactivity. Each artist contributed to this multi-media award with individual specialties, including research and design (Mark Goerner), engineering and technology (John Lawrence), light and digital projection (Jon Smith, Ethan Turpin), sculpture and fine art finishing (Kym Cochran, Tracy Beeler), and calligraphy (Jill Littlewood), fabrication and production (Ryan McCullough, Andrew Garrard, Justin Harmon). Additional direction and artistic consultation were provided by Maiza Hixson, Ron Glover and Zachary Rosen. These artists live and work in Santa Barbara and exhibit nationally and internationally.

Santa Barbara Beautiful: The Early Years
A
meeting was held on September 9, 1965 at City Hall for the purpose of establishing Santa Barbara Beautiful (SBB) as the name of a new developing organization. The founder, Mrs. Catherine Adams, was present, and the founding committee included Mahlon Read, chairman; Miss Pearl Chase (City Plans & Planting); R. Peter Krupszak, Secretary (Ge–Tempo); Stan C. Lowry (Chamber Of Commerce); and Michael Pahos, city landscape architect. At this meeting Miss Chase offered a quotation from Abraham Lincoln that says “I like to see a man proud of the place where he lives.” She said she felt a motto could help to crystallize community thinking and stimulate interest. Thus the idea for Santa Barbara Beautiful took root. Peter Wolfe designed the Santa Barbara Beautiful was formally original three inaugurated at a dinner which took place days leaved plant in 1966 later, on September 15, 1965 at the Miramar, launching the active, achievement-oriented civic organization. The fledgling organization with R. Peter Krupszak as President, held its first meeting in 1966 on January 19 at El Paseo Green Room. By September of 1966, Santa Barbara Beautiful had 17 Board members.

Mayor Don MacGillivray and Pearl Chase at a tree planting in 1977
The first awards program was carried out by the organization in 1966. That year commercial and industrial firms were recognized, as there was a need to encourage improvement. The judges included architects, landscape designers, and laymen active in garden clubs. The awards certificate, designed by James “Bud” Bottoms, was used at this first affair. At the annual awards banquet 1979, Mayor Shiffman expressed his high regard to sbb for calling the public’s attention to the importance of recognizing projects of beauty in the community. He noted that the program “was done without taxation, essentially a love offering from private citizens.” For many years, Santa Barbara Beautiful commemorated Dr. Pearl Chase’s birthday as a part of the program during the annual awards banquets. Roses from the Mission Rose Garden were used to decorate every table. The story of the life of Dr. Chase (1888–1979) is very well known, but perhaps it is not so well known that she was one of the founding members of Santa Barbara Beautiful. She was an active participating member of the Board of Directors down through the years. Her contributions were many. Both Dr. Pearl Chase and Jim Hodges dearly loved trees and all growing things, and they strongly supported the Street Tree Planting Program. Consequently, the Board of Directors of Santa Barbara Beautiful established a “Tree Replacement Memorial Fund” to honor these two board members. Approximately 300 street trees are lost every year due to disease, old age, weather, or vandalism, so this ongoing fund will serve to assure the replacement of the lost trees. —Compiled from History of Santa Barbara Beautiful by Rozella Jewett.

A Legacy of Community Beautification
D
uring the last 51 years of work in and around the City of Santa Barbara, the community has witnessed Santa Barbara Beautiful (SBB) extending its hand in support of community projects with an ongoing commitment to beautification. Some of their projects represent the wide open possibilities of the organization’s longstanding commitments to children and education about the natural world, such as Arbor Day programs in local schools. For Santa Barbara Beautiful, collaboration is key as the organization looks around the community for ways to offer a helping hand and give an encouraging boost to local programs with similar goals and missions. Santa Barbara Beautiful has treated its work as a mission to create a legacy of beauty. The organization plans to continue preserving and protecting Santa Barbara’s rich and diverse urban forest through its commemorative tree and neighborhood street tree programs. SBB’s mission also includes supporting and promoting art in public places as well as extending a hand in appreciation, recognizing exceptional beautification efforts with its awards programs for individuals and organizations.
Congratulations Santa Barbara Beautiful!
COMMITMENT TO THE ARTS: Santa Barbara Beautiful’s strong commitment to visual and cultural arts is often demonstrated in its community grants program, helping fund significant projects. Past collaborations include the new airport terminal mosaic medallion; restoration of Herbert Bayer’s Chromatic Gate; and the development of a Cultural Arts Master Plan. This year Santa Barbara Beautiful funded several art related projects such as a Phoebe Brunner mural, Hurry Home, in the Funk Zone; What Breathes Us: Santa Barbara Poets Laureate 2005-2015, a book of poems that celebrates ten years of Santa Barbara poet laureates; and has approved a scholarship for a MAD Academy student. Funk Zone Public Art Program Hurry Home, a mural created by Santa Barbara Artist Phoebe Brunner, is located at 127 Gray Avenue (corner of Yanonali and Gray). The Funk Zone Public Art Program, as approved by the City, allows property owners and tenants to work directly with The Arts Fund and selected artists to create site specific public art projects within the Funk Zone’s boundaries. The goal is that in time the murals and public art projects will add to the Funk Zone’s already dynamic environment to attract a larger audience for the arts.

A large-scale chalk rendering of an original work by the Funk Zone’s Youth Interactive art team lit up the Old Mission plaza in dynamic blazing color over the Memorial Day Holiday. 2016 marked the ninth consecutive year SBB has sponsored this art project. This year's project was dynamic, and, through the process, mentored an energetic group of young artists. 43

Commitment To The Environment
Tree City USA Since 1980, the City of Santa Barbara has earned recognition as a “Tree City USA” from the National Arbor Day Foundation for 35 consecutive years. The City of Santa Barbara honors SBB for its urban forest partnership with a yearly Arbor Day Proclamation at City Hall. Commemorative Tree Program The commemorative tree program has long been a favorite for families, friends, pet lovers and organizations. These dedication markers are installed at the base of city street trees. Proceeds from the plaques help fund the purchase of new street trees in collaboration with the City Parks & Recreation Department.

Commitment To Collaboration
Street Tree Program Santa Barbara Beautiful continues to preserve and protect Santa Barbara’s rich and diverse urban forest through its neighborhood street tree program. With funding from Santa Barbara Beautiful (raised through private donations) and the hard work of City Parks & Recreation Department crews, this partnership has planted more than 12,000 street trees within the City of Santa Barbara. This year’s severe drought has impacted the street tree program, with preservation of existing trees now a priority.
& Education
COMMITMENT TO COLLABORATION: State Street Flags Santa Barbara Beautiful, the community-supported non-profit organization continues its commitment to Downtown Santa Barbara’s State Street Flag Program. Brightly colored soft green flags fluttered along State Street for a week during April calling attention to the organization and its mission of promoting beautification through recognizing excellence in architecture and landscaping, and promoting art in public places.
COMMITMENT TO education: Arbor Day Program Santa Barbara Beautiful continued its Arbor Day tradition of teaching the value of trees by donating tree-related books to all local elementary and secondary local schools and libraries in April, the perfect month to celebrate trees and horticulture.
Scholarship Program Santa Barbara Beautiful’s commitment to higher education now includes funding of an annual Santa Barbara City College scholarship. The SBB scholarship grants $1,000 per year to students pursuing education in Horticulture. The scholarship testifies to SBB’s commitment to education and partnerships within the community. Jennifer Allen, a mother of six, is this year’s scholarship recipient. She is in her second year in the Horticulture Program and is working towards a degree in Environmental Horticulture with an option in Environmental Landscape Design.
