Jacaranda Award

for Outstanding Community Service

Santa Barbara Association of Realtors® (SBAOR)

T

he phrase “Community Service” is synonymous with the name Santa Barbara Association of REALTORS. This organization is made up of 1,200 people dedicated to giving back to the community of beautiful Santa Barbara that they serve. SBAOR is more than 100 years old and has more than a century-old track record of donating to more organizations than we have the time to list here. Realtors are passionate about giving back to their community in gratitude for the privilege of practicing their profession. You will always see realtors on clean-up days at the beaches, and of course participating in all those walks/ jog-a-thons for curing diseases such as cancer, heart disease, and MS. SBAOR was one of the founding contributors to our beloved Unity Shoppe. For the past 23 years, the Association has held a yearly auction in December for the benefit of the Unity Shoppe. Many realtors staff the phones during the Unity TV pledge time. They give generously of not only funds, but of their time. SBAOR is in their 8th year of the Annual Charity Golf Tournament. The 2017 recipient was Santa Barbara Athletic Round Table. Donations to past Annual Charity Events include: Teddy Bear Cancer Foundation (2005), Children’s Story Teller Hour (2006), Hearts Adaptive Riding Center (2007), United Boys and Girls Club (2008), Hospice of Santa Barbara (2009), Hugs

for Cubs (2010-2012), Teen Star (2013), Santa Barbara Athletic Round Table (2014), Alpha Resource Center (2015), and Sara House (2016). Other organizations that SBAOR members contribute to are: Unity Shoppe, Kiwanis Pancake Breakfast, Scholarship Foundation of Santa Barbara, Computers for Families, Habitat for Humanity, Housing Affordability Fund, Housing Summit, NAR Relief Fund (benefiting Hurricane Katrina Victims, SB Sheriff’s fund, MAD Academy, Youth Interactive, Girl’s Inc., FoodBank, United Way, Domestic Violence Shelter. Children’s organizations are often the recipient of SBAOR donations. The Golden Rule is included in the Realtor Code of Ethics. Realtors pledge to take grave social responsibility and are zealous in fulfilling that pledge. They take the “Golden Rule” to a high heart-felt level in believing in uplifting people in the community, as evidenced in a review of organizations that they support on a consistent basis.

MOXI, the Wolfe Museum of Exploration + Innovation OXI, The Wolf Museum of Exploration + Innovation opened its doors this past February and forever transformed lower State Street and the greater Santa Barbara community. The architecturally stunning, LEED Gold Certified hands-on science museum with its trademark Towbes Family Lookout Tower and soaring glass entryway beckons guests to come explore, discover, and play throughout its three floors of interactive experiences. The museum’s mission is to ignite learning through interactive experiences in science and creativity. As Santa Barbara’s newest hands-on destination for families and curious minds of all ages, it beautifies and enhances our community in so many ways. In just six months since opening, MOXI has welcomed more than 125,000 guests from around the world and been recognized as one of the “World’s 10 Best New Museums” by Fodor’s Travel. Nearly 4,000 school children have already visited on field trips, including 1,350 from 17 Title 1 schools. The museum’s first summer camps served and engaged 200 kids, including one session filled with teens from United Boys and Girls Clubs of Santa Barbara County. Campers had fun conducting experiments around a variety of themes and enjoyed tons of hands-on making, designthinking activities and interaction with MOXI’s exhibits. Plus, more than 5,000 families have become MOXI Members in support of the nonprofit museum. MOXI is a place where fun comes first and learning happens in active, exciting, and unexpected ways. Themed exhibit tracks include areas dedicated to Sound, Fantastic Forces, Tech, Light, Speed, and Interactive Media. The third floor is home to the rooftop Levinson Family Sky Garden and features exhibits that take advantage of the natural elements and stunning views of the mountains, harbor, and Stearns Wharf. Be sure to stop in the Innovation Workshop, MOXI’s very own makerspace, to enjoy rotating daily activities in making and tinkering. When visiting, keep an eye out for the museum’s floor staff, known as Sparks, who are there to ignite that learning by sparking your curiosity and creativity. They’re the ones in the blue shirts and will encourage you to experiment, observe, explore, discover, question, make and design.

The Santa Barbara Botanic Garden Native Choice Award

for Leadership in the use of California Native Plants

Las Positas – Cliff Drive Roundabout

N

ative plants define the look and geography of our distinctly beautiful region. They are the foundation for healthy ecosystems and sustainable landscapes. For the past four years the Santa Barbara Botanic Garden has been honored to be a part of the Santa Barbara Beautiful Award Program through its Native Choice Award. Created to recognize leadership by an individual or organization in the use of California natives in designed landscapes, the award seeks to encourage the use of native plants in our home gardens and public spaces. This year, it is our pleasure to bestow the 2017 award to the City of Santa Barbara Public Works Department. The newly installed Las Positas-Cliff Drive Roundabout is located at the confluence of three natural landmarks: Arroyo Burro Creek, Elings Park and the Douglas Family Preserve. It serves as a gateway to coastal access for thousands of Santa Barbara visitors and residents. First programmed as a street improvement project in 2002, work on this busy intersection accelerated in 2014 when the City contracted with Kittelson & Associates to complete the final design for the roundabout with David R. Black & Associates providing the landscape design in collaboration with the Santa Barbara Parks and Recreation Department staff. This unique roundabout is surrounded by natural coastal habitat and it complements its setting with beautiful native plantings and aesthetic treatments. The plant palette incorporates drought tolerant trees, shrubs, ornamental grasses, and ground covers that grow well in our region: Catalina ironwood, John Dourley and emerald carpet manzanita, Cleveland sage, deer grass, canyon prince giant rye, and California gray rush, to name a few. The roundabout incorporates best practices for water conservation through its use of a drip irrigation system using recycled water. Its design also captures storm water runoff, allowing it to infiltrate into

the ground, helping to recharge our groundwater supplies and keeping pollutants out of Arroyo Burro Creek. Congratulations to the City of Santa Barbara—we hope to see more projects like this in the future! This project had been a vision for a long time, and state funding was first programmed back in 2002. The relinquishment of State Route 225 in 2014 allowed the City to accelerate efforts to improve the intersection. The City contracted with Kittelson & Associates to complete final design of the roundabout, and David R. Black & Associates served as the project’s landscape architect. The approximately $2.0 million project was funded with $750,000 of State Transportation Improvement Program grant funds, with the City funding the remaining costs. Below are the key project players: City Project Manager (design): Ashleigh A. Shue, PE, City of Santa Barbara, Public Works Department City Traffic Engineer: Derrick V. The Flying A Studios discretely located on the north east corner of Chapala and Mission Streets has an amazing unique historic qualification in our Community. Built in 1913 by the American Film Corporation [based in Chicago], the silent movie studios actually took up a whole city block with very ambitious buildings and open site spaces for the filming of hundreds of silent movies up until 1920 when the movie business took a turn down to Hollywood. The last remaining building quite visibly has been meticulously maintained, and additionally enhanced with thriving succulent gardens. The interesting Flying A logo is perched prominently at the front of the building over the sign of the current architectural firm occupants. The stewardship that has maintained and preserved this slice of architectural history is apparent in all aspects of the building, including the three prominent arched windows, stucco details, arched entry gate, and period vintage entry light sconce.

A Tribute to Francis and Anne Griswold

S

anta Barbara Beautiful’s principal benefactors, Francis and Anne Griswold, rarely left their house on Marina Drive in Hope Ranch, and did not participate in community life. But their legacy provides funding for historical preservation and beautification in the two towns they apparently loved the most, Santa Barbara and Beaufort, South Carolina. Little is known about Mr. Griswold’s history. He apparently came from a monied family and was never employed. For unknown reasons, he moved from Albany, New York to the South, and authored two popular romance novels! While there, he met Anne, a retiring woman who “didn’t like anyone,” according to Mike Rodrigue, their stockbroker and presently their trust’s Trustee. Francis and Anne moved to Santa Barbara, hired a gardener and became recluses. Francis Griswold did like the stock market however, and so Mr. Rodrigue and Mr. Griswold talked almost daily. The Griswolds’ health declined over the years, and Mr. Rodrigue was appointed by the County to be their Conservator. He would go to their home a couple times a month and deliver some cash to spend, and their gardener Gilbert would take them

out for whatever they needed. If they wanted to take a rest from their downtown shopping, they went to their “town place,” the tiny house on Anacapa St. that was occupied subsequently by the Santa Cruz Island Foundation. The Griswolds loved animals, which perhaps explains their selection of two cat charities as additional trust beneficiaries. Mr. Rodrigue remembers Mr. Griswold sitting on his porch, feeding peanuts by hand to the bluejays. Originally, they owned the land from their Marina Dr. home down to the ocean cliffs, but in 1987 they sold the cliff portion, where a home was built by Astrid Rotman. She later sold it to Jeffrey Henley, Vice Chairman of Oracle Corp. After Mr. Griswold’s death in 2001, Mr. Henley purchased the Griswold home to use as a guest house. The Griswolds left no clue about their selection process for trust beneficiaries, with one exception. We do know that Mr. Griswold phoned Santa Barbara Beautiful in the late 1990’s, and asked questions about what SBB would do with the money if it were received. Patsy Brock, SBB’s secretary at that time, stressed SBB’s education programs for children about trees, its beautification projects, and the professionalism of the Board members. Apparently he liked the answers, and today the visual enhancements and cultural activities that SBB supports are in large part thanks to Francis and Anne.

SB Beautiful is happy to finally have learned the names of the team for the 2016 Single Family Home Large Lot, including:

She earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts at the Art Center College of Design, Pasadena and has experience as an Elementary School Enrichment Program Art Teacher.
