his monthly series helps increase awareness and appreciation of Santa Barbara’s many outstanding public trees, and our support for planting thousands of street trees.

Honoring John Palminteri...

The SBB Board of Directors joined John Palminteri, his family & KEYT news crew on Dec. 4, 2018 - the 1st Anniversary of the Thomas Fire - to dedicate a tree and plaque to John, first recipient of the “King Palm” Award for Public Service news coverage of the Thomas Fire and Montecito Debris Flow. The King Palm is located at 812 Anacapa St, near the Main Post Office.

“Trees are a special part of our

commitment to the environment and present very special opportunities for our community.

SBB ♥ TREES Welcome Back Street Trees!

W

ith colorful Santa Barbara Beautiful logo caps, big shovels and cameras rolling, the board of directors, City of SB Urban Forest crew, City TV, and John Palminteri’s KEYT News Crew gathered together the morning of Monday, May 20th at the entrance to Alice Keck Memorial Gardens to relaunch the Street Tree Planting Program. “We had to wait until the city lifted its Drought restrictions,” SBB President Penny Haberman explained. The wet winter prompted City Council to approve resuming new tree planting in the city.

SBB President Penny Haberman helps plant a new Sweet Shade dedicated to past president Courtney Seeple

With thanks to the Seeple Family for donating funds in memory of Past President Courtney Seeple, ten Sweet Shade city street trees were planted along the 300 block of East Micheltorena Street. A commemorative tree plaque dedicated to the Seeple Family was also installed at the blooming Sweet Shade tree at the steps of the park’s entrance. Attending board members each shoveled dirt into the tree well to remember him. “Each street is designated with a specific species and this is the designated species for this street,” said David Gress, SBB past president and former City Arborist. “They can get to be 40-feet tall with a 20-foot spread and they get covered with these fragrant flowers that smell like orange blossoms.” Putting the young trees in from plastic pots requires a technique that included loosening up the roots. “The roots are going around in circles; we don’t want it to continue doing that because it will choke the tree. They get root bound,” said George Jimenez from the Santa Barbara Parks and Recreation Division. The city says there’s a backlog of work. “It’s been several years of drought and it has been a trying time - we lost a lot of trees,” said Nathan Slack, City Street Tree Supervisor. More street tree plantings are expected through spring and summer in areas including the Mesa and off Portesuello near Las Positas.

Arbor Day 2019

E

very Spring since 2000, SBB and the City of Santa Barbara have teamed up with local schools to celebrate Arbor Day with tree planting ceremonies. Hands on tree planting by the children –and tree – related book donations to the schools – are a vital element of our longstanding commitment educating our future leaders of the natural world and the benefits of trees. This year five local schools participated in planting seven new trees. Arbor Day celebrations include an annual Arbor Day Proclamation presented by the Mayor at City Hall in the Council Chambers. 2019 Arbor Day Books donated to the local schools and public libraries: Elementary School Book: “Who Will Plant a Tree?” Secondary School Book: “The Hidden Life of Trees”

Santa Barbara Beautiful A Legacy of Beautification ... Since 1965

I Madonnari ~ Italian Street Painting

S

ince 2008 SBB has participated as a sponsor of the annual Children’s Creative Project I Madonnari Italian Street Painting Festival over Memorial Day Weekend at the Old Mission. Participation in this festival is an important link to SBB’s commitment to educational outreach and community beautification through the visual and creative arts. Funds raised at the festival are donated to local school arts programs. With the generous support of arts advocate David Jacoby, first I Madonnari event sponsor, SBB has been a constant presence at the annual festival. Over the years the concept of implementing 8’ X 8’ works of art in chalk - featuring a horticultural theme - has evolved from rendering a local artist’s works to now offering aspiring young artists an opportunity to create their own original works and translate the image into the dynamic chalk medium.
