El Encanto Santa Barbara
G
enerations of dreams resonate within its walls. The Old El Encanto Hotel, cloaked in nostalgia and teeming with memories of generations past, captures the glamour and romance - the very name means “The Enchanted.” Early on, El Encanto became known as a playground for movie stars and politicians. In 1918 a news article described the historic hotel’s setting: “It is claimed for El Encanto that it is the most beautifully situated hotel in California, and certainly there is much in the situation to justify the claim. From its elevation is viewed the city, the channel and islands, and the Santa Ynez Mountains to the north.” Fast-forward 91 years, and the hotel’s beautiful vista remains the same. This is Santa Barbara’s beloved hotel, home to those special occasions of the past...anyone who has lived in Santa Barbara for a period of time has special memories of the hotel, drinks on the terrace, prom-night dinners, banquet parties, weddings at the lily pond, and the wonderful wisteria vines covering the Arbor. This historic property has undergone a meticulous restoration by Orient-Express Hotels, marking the luxury brand’s first property in the West. The hotel reopened this year with 92 remodeled bungalows that overlook the city and the ocean. Orient-Express has spent well over a hundred million and many years of planning to restore this landmark in keeping with its historic styles. Architectural historian Alexandra Cole said, “Restoration should emulate 1938 when the Inn showed the most cohesive historic integrity. The new main building should occupy the same exact footprint of the old one. On the most authentic cottages landmark status was designated...Most people will not know that the main building is not the original” Orient-Express’s major revitalization of this treasured property includes new buildings, remodeled interiors, architectural elements, private patios, a brand new pool and pool terrace, and a new banquet room in the main building. The magnificent arbor and lily pond still remain, and the columns were re-built brick by brick to retain their historical integrity. The gardens and pathways have been carefully reconfigured and profusely replanted with the green hues associated with El Encanto’s historic period of significance. Today we remark upon the history of our beloved El Encanto, within the Riviera neighborhood, and the phenomenal efforts made by designers and craftspeople with one of our highest honors, the President’s Award. It was the playground for the rich and powerful yet this Hotel has held our hearts in its hands.

Jacaranda Award for Community Service
The Santa Barbara Rose Society he Santa Barbara Rose Society is a nonprofit, made up entirely of volunteers, devoted to sharing knowledge about roses, rose culture, and the pleasure of rose gardening. This longstanding horticultural group provides lectures, mentorship, and in the field, opportunities on how to plant and maintain roses. For many years this group has had an ongoing impact on Santa Barbara. Established an affiliate of the American Rose Society by its founders in 1959, the group called themselves the Santa Barbara Rose Society. Soon the non-profit set its sights on a Rose Garden seen at the Mission Historical Park, across from Santa Barbara’s Old Mission, which had a vast lawn area and the A. C. Postel Memorial Rose Garden on the far side. Formerly mission land, the City bought this park area in 1928. In 1955 a city rose garden began with a donation of 500 rose bushes. When city budget cuts resulted in a declining rose garden, there was talk of converting it to tennis courts. The Santa Barbara Rose Society and others rounded up the finances and volunteers to assure that the rose garden remained. Through the dedication of the Rose Society and efforts of the City Parks Department, the garden was awarded Garden Accreditation by the All-America Rose Selections Committee. This special honor provides the city garden with All-America Rose Selections donated by growers one year in advance of their sale to the general public. Each year these beautiful, award-winning introductions are on display. Through the dedication of the Rose Society working

with the City Parks & Recreation Department, the garden developed spectacularly over the years and has been recognized as one of the top two municipal rose gardens in the nation for the excellence of its maintenance and the beauty of its setting. Through its monthly meetings the Rose Society also continues to encourage the growing of roses in private gardens. It provides information on rose culture, the best varieties for this area, sustainable cultivation and practices, and offers advice on growing roses from expert consulting rosarians. Santa Barbara Beautiful’s Board of Directors is pleased to honor this outstanding organization with the 2013 Jacaranda Award for Community Service.

David Jacoby avid Jacoby is a man who has lived many lives. Each of those lives has been grounded in the fertile soil of volunteerism and philanthropy. As a young emigre to Palestine from Poland in the 1930’s, David became immersed in an agrarian country that was doing its best to feed thousands of disenfranchised Jewish people from around the world. He worked during school vacations on a Kibbutz and fondly recounts volunteering to plant hundreds of trees, a national project. As he planted, he joined the ranks of those who only had the gift of their efforts to share. This tree planting and other volunteer efforts when he was still a boy were where the seeds of generosity were first sown in his life. David served Israel in countless ways, then immigrated to America to study in 1951 at the urging of his parents and brothers Henry and Abe. Upon arriving in Los Angeles and studying at LA David Jacoby City College, David’s employment project was for the Los Angeles Metropolitan Recreation and Youth Services Council. He helped with a city wide map survey of all of the parks in the city. He was able to use the cartography skills that he learned during Israel’s struggle for independence. He loved the project and received praise for his excellent work. Soon after, he moved to Champaign-Urbana, Illinois to attend the University of Illinois and earned a BS in Food Technology. He was invited to join Gamma Sigma Delta, the National Honor Society of Agriculture. He also joined the Institute of Food Technologists, University of IL International Student Organization, and the Hillel Student Foundation. Next he moved to the San Francisco Bay area to attend UC Berkeley, where he received a MS in Food Science and a minor in Chemical Engineering. There he volunteered to be news correspondent for the local IFT publication. He also met his future wife, partner, and best friend, Janine. Following school he worked for Gerber Baby Foods Inc., doing Research and Product Development, in Oakland. After getting married the pair moved to Woodland Hills and raised their children, Naomi and Daniel. At that time he worked for Adolph’s Food Products Inc., in Product Development and Quality
Control, in Burbank. Following this he developed a successful exporting business that focused on speciality coatings and chemicals. He joined the Valley Chamber of Commerce, Los Angeles of Chamber of Commerce, LA World Trade Organization, and became a Charter Member of the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum. David was deeply influenced to expand his support of non-profit organizations with his time and resources by his son Daniel. When Daniel fell ill, he used his energies to form a foundation that continues to support Interfaith camps. Daniel also supported the Wellness Community in Ventura County. After Daniel died nine years ago, David continued to support these projects. David and Janine started a family philanthropy program “The Jacoby Family Fund” that supported many non profits each year. Then, when they bought a second home in Santa Barbara, David responded to a classified ad placed by Santa Barbara Beautiful looking for volunteers. He joined as a member, then was invited to join the board, was elected Treasurer, and Chaired the Ways and Means Committee for several years. Janine was supportive of all of David’s activities and at the same time was nationally recognized for her teaching abilities. Unfortunately, she passed away shortly after Daniel. David’s family continues to be a central part of his life, including his daughter Naomi Ryerson; three granddaughters, Michaela, Lia, and Jordana; two great granddaughters, Sophia and Emma; and his partner and best friend for the past eight years, Penny Haberman. In his new life, David and Penny, who shares his love of the arts, began joining each other’s non profit organizations – thus adding involvement with the SB City College President’s Council, Architectural Foundation of SB, Wildling Museum, Santa Barbara Museum of Art, Los Angeles Worlds Affairs Council, and C-Cap organization for helping disadvantaged students to graduate in the culinary arts. As he worked with Santa Barbara Beautiful, David’s insight into the importance of Art in all communities began to influence the board to include art projects as well as green projects in their purview, often using his own funds to see that projects were launched. Most notably, he was instrumental in funding Santa Barbara’s first public art DVD and later, he offered an inspiring gift in support of the Chromatic Gate restoration. Also, he was an advocate for art during his service on the City’s You Plan Santa Barbara Outreach Committee. These kinds of gifts, that come at pivotal junctures, are how David likes to use his resources, encouraging others to step up and join him in supporting a healthy, vibrant, and creative community where everyone’s gifts and abilities are appreciated. or almost 49 years of working in and around the City of Santa Barbara and a year of relationships Under Santa Barbara Skies, the community has witnessed Santa Barbara Beautiful continuing to extend its hand in support of community projects. Some of those projects represent the wide open possibilities of the organization’s longstanding commitments to children and education about the natural world, such as Arbor Day programs in local schools. Some represent newly forged ties, such as the birth of a huge collaboration of nonprofit agencies in support of the Santa Barbara Public Gardens Partnership. For Santa Barbara Beautiful, collaboration is key as the organization looks around the community for ways to offer a helping hand and give an encouraging boost to local programs with similar goals and missions. This year community collaborative grants were accepted by Lotusland, the Santa Barbara Botanic Garden, Youth Interactive in the Funk Zone, The Children’s Creative Project/I Madonnari, 15 local schools, the Restoration of the

Chromatic Gate Campaign, and the Santa Barbara Harbor with a landscaping improvement project to welcome visitors to our fair City. Santa Barbara Beautiful has been creating a legacy of community beautification since 1965 and continues to preserve and protect Santa Barbara’s rich and diverse urban forest through its commemorative tree and neighborhood street tree programs. With funding from Santa Barbara Beautiful raised through private donations, and the hard work of the City Parks & Recreation Department, the Department has planted over 12,000 street trees within the City of Santa Barbara. Since 1980, the City of Santa Barbara has earned recognition as a “Tree City USA” from the National Arbor Day Foundation for 33 consecutive years. It takes in excess of $20,000 per year on Santa Barbara Beautiful’s part to support this tree-planting and care program. SBB also supports and promotes art in public places and continues to recognize exceptional beautification efforts with its awards programs for individuals and organizations.

The organization’s serious commitment to public art was realized with SBB’s major funding of the Restoration of Herbert Bayer’s Chromatic Gate campaign. When a call went out for support for this beachside gateway to the community, Santa Barbara Beautiful stepped up with a $10,000 commitment to help underwrite the restoration. SBB has also contributed to temporary sculpture installations at the Santa Barbara Airport, Jardin de las Granadas, and State Street, among other locations and to additional art installations around the City. The organization also has been instrumental in funding and encouraging development of a Cultural Arts Master Plan as well as the inclusion of Public Art in the city’s ongoing General Plan update. These activities will be meaningful to the cultural life of the City in the years to come. As Santa Barbara Beautiful entered its 48th year in 2013 the community-supported non-profit organization continued several ongoing programs to contribute to the beauty of our city. Part of that effort involved promoting the organization itself. During recent years, Santa Barbara Beautiful made a commitment to the Downtown Organization’s State Street Flag Program. Brightly colored soft green flags fluttered along State Street calling attention to the organization and its mission of promoting beautification through planting trees, recognizing excellence in architecture and landscaping, and promoting art in public places.
The Santa Barbara Public Gardens Partnership “Get Inspired!” was the rallying cry heard from Santa Barbara’s many public gardens that collaborated on an expansion of local National Public Gardens Day events. The SB Public Gardens Partnership is a countywide collaboration that promotes awareness of our unique and inspiring public gardens, celebrates their beauty and benefits, and encourages their year-round enjoyment. Events included over ten lectures by local garden experts, a tea party at the Simpson House Inn, Carousel rides at Chase Palm Park, tours of the Courthouse Gardens and Clock Tower, and the Garden Lovers Tour. Lead partners included Lotusland, the Santa Barbara Botanic Garden, the City of Santa Barbara Parks and Rec Department, and Casa Del Herrero. Participating gardens included: Old Mission Santa Barbara’s La Huerta Historic Garden, Rancho La Patera and Stow House, the Santa Barbara Zoological Gardens, The SBCC Lifescape Garden at Santa Barbara City College, the University Of California Cooperative Extension (UCCE), Master Gardeners Of Santa Barbara County, the Four Seasons Biltmore Santa Barbara, and Santa Barbara County Parks. In an effort to support education, the first recipient of the newly created Santa Barbara Beautiful SBCC Scholarship was awarded to, Jose Javier Torres-bello, a SBCC student in Environmental Horticulture who received a $500 grant to further their studies in Environmental Horticulture. The newly established SBB scholarship grants a total of $1000 per year - $500 per semester - alternating each semester between Environmental Horticulture and Visual Arts. The Scholarship testifies to SBB’s commitment to education and partnerships within the community. The organization’s commemorative tree program has also experienced growth this year. Long a favorite of parents, spouses, grandparents, children, pet lovers, and organizations, the program received a huge visual boost with the implementation of a new design that offers a plaque lettered on a dark background embedded in a sandstone-colored concrete base. These attractive markers have improved durability and are installed next to City street trees. The plaques help fund the planting of street trees. A large-scale chalk rendering of an original work by acclaimed landscape artist David Ashwell lit up the Old Mission plaza in blazing color during I Madonnari Italian Street Painting Festival over the Memorial Day Holiday. It was Santa Barbara Beautiful’s entry in the festival. Art teacher Diane Stevenett and local landscape architect and Board Member Robert F. Adams, with the assistance of local Arts Fund teen art students created the rendering. 2013 marked the sixth consecutive year SBB has sponsored this art project that benefits the Children’s Creative Project.
Trevor The Traveling Tree Santa Barbara Beautiful continued an Arbor Day tradition of teaching the value of trees with the donation of tree- related books to (20) local schools and libraries. Copies of this year's book selection, "Trevor The Traveling Tree," written and illustrated by local artist Gail Lucas, were donated to all schools within the Santa Barbara Unified School District, plus Cold Spring School and Marymount of Santa Barbara. Books were also donated to City's Central Library and the Montecito, Eastside, and Goleta branches. During several Arbor Day celebrations, Trevor, in leafy costume, made surprise personal appearances with the author - including tree planting ceremonies at local schools Adams, Franklin, and the Santa Barbara Community Academy. The Central Library's Children's Reading Circle, much to the delight of the young children and their parents, met Trevor with hugs and wide smiles and a new appreciation of trees.

Santa Barbara Beautiful also has a history of recognizing important beautification projects throughout the City each year through annual and monthly awards programs. The Youth Interactive Mural Project Santa Barbara Beautiful stepped into the Funk Zone in a new collaboration with Youth Interactive, a non-profit founded by Nathalie Gensac. SBB was proud to fund an anti-graffiti project during the summer. Youth Interactive focuses on at-risk kids offering tuition-free classes and programs. On August 24th, along with Mayor Helene Schneider and area dancers, Youth Interactive teens participated in unveiling a 40-foot long mural that they created that portrays some of Santa Barbara’s landmarks along with various young artists interwoven throughout with spray paint. The mural is a colorful addition to local public art and the Funk Zone neighborhood was enhanced by this effort. As one of many local non-profit organizations, Santa Barbara Beautiful takes its place among those who are contributing to our beautiful, caring, and creative city. To accomplish that, SBB is looking for members to join and for financial support.
