Algae for water treatment and Biofuel production (Bioenergi genom vattenrening)
Collaboration partners Hammarby Sjรถstadsverk and Clear Water Energy Nordic AB (CWE Nordic) Summary The aim of this project is to investigate how algae can be utilized in order to reduce the amount of energy (e.g. for aeration) and chemicals used in conventional wastewater treatment. The tests with algae for water treatment is also examined regarding the production of biomass that may be suitable for biogas production. The system at Sjรถstadsverket consists of shallow ponds. In a full-scale the algae treatment may replace parts of the traditional treatment processes or it may be used for complementary treatment of the effluent water. The project at Hammarby Sjรถstadsverk is aimed to investigate how different conditions and loads will effect the treatment efficiency and the biomass. Further, the biogas potential of the produced biomass is examined. The project will also include tests about the cleaning effects of different compounds that the system was not originally designed for, such as medical compounds. CWE Nordics seeks open minded collaborators in the field of gas yield optimization. This may include different treatment steps after harvesting. www.sjostadsverket.se

Description The system contains algae that are in symbiosis with bacteria that degrade the organic compounds of wastewater. The algae produce the oxygen that is necessary for the bacteria to carry out the degradation process. The bacteria in turn provide carbon dioxide that is vital for the photosynthesis of the algae. The bacteria form sludge and algae produce biomass that can be used for biofuel production. The system consists of shallow ponds with algae and, if required, a heavy metal trap. CWE Nordic also has a demonstration system for the treatment of runoff water from farm and agricultural areas in the municipality of Trelleborg, and a small system in Fors Reningsverk in Västerhaninge. Goal The goal of this project is to map the systems performance concerning biomass and biogas yield at different conditions. This is done in order to be able to optimize the system to the different and varying conditions in the field and to increase the gas yield in general. Expected benefit The system can reduce the costs for wastewater treatment as the need for aeration and the use of chemicals is reduced. Further, the biomass produced can be used for carbon dioxide neutral biofuel production.
