ANNUAL HOMECOMING

I thank my God in all my remembrance of you, always in every prayer of mine for you all making my prayer with joy, because of your partnership in the gospel from the first day until now.

PHILIPPIANS 1:3-5, ESV

Our President From

Anytime I think about our Annual Homecoming, the gathering of the church in Antioch in Acts 15:30-31 comes to mind. The backdrop of that gathering was the Jerusalem Council meeting and recognizing that the gospel of Jesus Christ and his attendant kingdom have no racial, ethnic or geographic borders. Paul and Barnabas, along with other leaders, went to the church at Antioch to read the letter from the apostles and elders. The church received the news of the advancing of the gospel with great joy and were encouraged by it.

As we gather for the Annual Homecoming of the SBC of Virginia, we will hear much about the advancement of the gospel both here in the Commonwealth and around the world. The amazing and humbling reality is that God is using the ministries of the SBCV to make an eternal difference in the lives of men and women, boys and girls. And, like those early believers in Antioch, I trust what you hear and experience at Annual Homecoming will cause you to rejoice and be encouraged. I know my own heart has been encouraged as I realize how blessed we are to be advancing the gospel together.

I am so grateful for the faithfulness of our Executive Director, Dr. Brian Autry, and the wonderful ministry and support staff of the SBCV. A special word of thanks to Greg Brinson and London Bridge Baptist Church for their hospitality and services provided during our Annual Homecoming.

It has been a pleasure to serve as your convention president this past year. I have had the honor to meet many of you and to hear what God is doing in your own churches and communities, because of the gospel. As your convention president, I am available to serve you in any way that I am able. I am thankful for you and for your partnership in the gospel and pray for you regularly (Phil 1:3-5). And, I am convinced that we can do far more together than we can do on our own.

Let us continue advancing the gospel together, remember that we are not alone.

First Baptist Church, Charlottesville

Our Executive Director From

On behalf of your SBCV team, we join with your convention officers, executive board, and our wonderful host church, London Bridge, and their pastor, Greg Brinson, to welcome you to the 2024 SBCV Annual Homecoming.

This church serves as host church for our Youth Evangelism Conference, and at this Annual Homecoming, we will have a feature on the call to reach and mobilize the next generation. We will also have a time of prayer for our nation’s military and their families as this area is home to many of those serving and those who served our nation. As we are meeting this week, I want to also ask you to consider coming back in the spring of 2025 for our Send Tour. For a couple days, we can come alongside churches in this area seeking to reach this community with the Good News of Jesus Christ. As you are here over the next few days, pray for this community and the churches who serve here every day.

We are blessed to have faithful preachers of the Word, heartfelt worship leaders, and wonderful times of fellowship and encouragement. We will celebrate how the Lord is working through His Church to send missionaries around the world, share the Good News of Jesus with the lost, equip ministers of the Gospel, plant and revitalize churches. Most of all, it is our prayer this year, that we will celebrate and mobilize as we advance the Gospel together.

If you have attended before, you know our gathering is much more than an annual business meeting. You will hear and see testimonies of God’s work over the past year. Thank you for your church’s partnership in the Gospel. Even now, because we advance the Gospel together, we have disaster relief and rebuild teams serving, we have over three and half thousand missionaries witnessing around the world, and we are seeing churches planted and strengthened.

So, welcome to the Annual Homecoming of the SBCV. Our prayer is that you will be encouraged by the ministry that is taking place through God’s empowerment as your church prays, sends, gives, and goes through our Gospel partnership. By God’s grace and power, the SBCV will continue to seek to come alongside local churches advancing the Gospel together to reach our neighbors and the nations for Jesus Christ!

CHILDREN’S MINISTRY

Led by Landon Tucker C-205

Leading the Next Generation Through a Sinful World Through Connection: Kids are experiencing hurt, trauma, and brokenness from a young age. The enemy has a clear assignment against the next generation, but God is not intimidated. Let’s discover how God has equipped us to hold kids’ hands during this crucial time in their lives.

CHURCH PLANTING

Led by Chris Dowd and Colby Garman F-200

Church Planting Start to Finish: Sometimes church planting can sound like a special activity for elite operatives. In this session we will demystify the church planting experience from beginning to end. Come hear church planters describe their experiences in different stages of development and learn how your church can partner all along way.

Interpreted for the Deaf

CHURCH CARES

Led by Jim Sells and Dave Velloney A-203

The Church Cares: What if the church is the key to solving our nation’s mental health crisis? The Church Cares initiative is building a community of lay helpers who listen and walk alongside those in emotional distress. At no cost, the initiative will help churches do what the church does best… care for and bring Christ-centered healing to those in distress; mobilize our people to serve others; and build a healing community.

DISCIPLESHIP

Led by Gordon Fort A-103/105/107

The Prayer Life of the Pastor: The church will model its prayer life after the example of their pastor. Jesus said His Father’s house would be called a “house of prayer”. Praying pastors lead to praying churches. Let’s look together at the importance of the prayer life of the pastor personally and corporately. Prayer isn’t just important, it is essential!

EVANGELISM

Led by Steve Bradshaw

LEGAL ISSUES

Led by Marcus Harris A-102

Protecting the Church’s Call to Proclaim the Truth: You became a church leader to preach the Word, make disciples, and serve your community. However, as our culture moves away from Christian values, new laws and policies are creating challenges for pastors, diverting your focus from ministry to legal matters. Alliance Defending Freedom exists to legally protect your God-given right to live and speak the truth. Come learn how ADF’s Church & Ministry Alliance has equipped over 4,000 churches and ministries like yours with the legal knowledge and tools to ensure you can operate, teach, and serve consistent with God’s calling.

MISSIONS

Send Relief: Partnering with Send Relief to mobilize for compassion ministries in your community and around the world.

BREAKOUT SESSION 1

MEN’S MINISTRY

Led by Mike Young

A-205/A-207

Get out of the Cul-de-sac! Moving Beyond Dead-End Men’s Ministry: Many churches check the men’s ministry box by hosting events that generate interest and excitement but fail to transform lives. Typical “cul-de-sac ministry” means men leave the same way they arrived. This workshop will help you develop a men’s discipleship strategy that starts with engaging events and leads to lasting transformation.

NEXTGEN

Led by Chad Higgins A-104/A-106

Helping Parents with Hard Questions: This breakout will focus on how church leaders can help both students and parents find answers and community in their church when it comes to navigating hard cultural and life questions.

PASTORAL MINISTRY

Led by Chuck Lawless C-206/C-207

When You Just Want to Quit: If you’ve ever thought about quitting in ministry, you’re hardly alone. As pastoral ministry gets tougher, we need to know how to press on even when we might want to quit. This breakout session is designed to help you keep looking forward in the tough times.

You will walk away with tools and resources to help you in your church.

BREAKOUT SESSION 2 • 10:30

CHILDREN’S MINISTRY

Led by Landon Tucker C-205

Keep Going! Need Encouragement? Sharing Jesus with the next generation is both a privilege and a challenge. The enemy wants to bring discouragement and exhaustion into our ministries. Let’s be energized and find ways to trust God for the encouragement we need to press on!

CHURCH PLANTING

Led by Josh Miller F-200

Breaking Growth Barriers: Growing and Going – You can grow without going but you can’t go without growing – long term anyway. If we want to plant more churches, send more missionaries, and multiply disciples we need to focus on breaking growth barriers because sending and church planting is downstream from reaching people.

COMPASSION MINISTRY

Led by Chris Seaton and Lauren Welch A-203

Equipping Your Church to Love Vulnerable Children through Family Advocacy Ministries: James 1:27 is our guide for loving children from hard places. But let’s face it, it is complicated! Parenting is complicated by trauma, working with agencies, helping (without hurting) struggling families… they are all tough issues. Developing a strong FAM ministry at your church (with helpful guidance) will establish a foundation for your church family to discern what God is calling your people to and equip you in the process. If you believe in slow, steady “drips” of progress forward… this is the place for you!

DISCIPLESHIP

Led by Gordon Fort A-103/A-105/A-107

Disciples aren’t born, they are Made! Red flag when the back door is as active as the front door. Have we neglected the critical importance of making disciples? Disciples are made-not born. The pastor takes the lead in developing avenues and methods for making disciples. Let’s talk about that!

MEN’S MINISTRY

Led by Mike Young

A-205/A-207

Bigfoot Discipleship: Reaching Men Who Are Hard to Find: Do the same few men attend all your ministry events? While it’s great to see them, you know others are lurking in the shadows and along the edges of the church – like mythical Bigfoot, rumored but rarely seen. This workshop will explore who these men are, why they’re hard to find, and strategies to engage them.

MISSIONS

Led by Brad Russell and Chris Derry
