4 | SBCV Studentz Camp 2015: NOISE

WELCOME CAMPERS

“WHAT IS THAT NOISE?” I can hear my mom asking it in my memory even now. Usually she was talking about the music I was listening to or the TV that I had left on in the living room. Technically speaking, “noise” is an “unwanted signal that harms the quality of something”. “Noise” can be the static that keeps your radio from sounding crisp, the 2.4 Ghz cordless phone that keeps your Wi-Fi from connecting to your Xbox, or the obnoxiously loud-mouth movie-goer who keeps you from hearing the dialogue in the movie you just paid $10.50 to see. There is also a type of noise that impacts us spiritually. It keeps us from receiving, understanding and sharing the “truth-signal” that God sends. This kind of “spiritual noise” surrounds us and takes different forms. It constantly attempts to distort, cover up, or make unintelligible God’s truth and will for us. This year at camp, we will be focusing our attention on how to tune-out spiritual noise, tune-in to the True Signal, and how to re-transmit what God has communicated to us. On behalf of the churches of the SBC of Virginia, I welcome you to JMU and to Studentz Camp 2015. We are so glad you’re here with us. We are looking forward to having some fun together as we tune-in to God’s Word and open our lives to His message. Tuned-In,

SHAWN AMES

SPECKA?

S.P.E.C.K.A. Bible Study METHOD

You keep using this term SPECKA. WHAT DOES THAT EVEN MEAN?

I’m glad you asked!

As Christians we learn to relate to God through the Bible. SPECKA is an uncomplicated Bible Study method that uses the six questions represented by the acronym S.P.E.C.K.A. to study and apply God’s Word to our lives. It works well for personal Bible study and for leading a group Bible study.

HOW SPECKA WORKS: Pick a passage of Scripture (maybe 5-10 verses). We’ve already picked it for you for this week. Read the passage. Referring back to the passage, answer 2-3 of the SPECKA questions. Some passages you will be able to answer more questions than others, and that’s ok. Always answer the last question about application.

PRETTY SIMPLE, RIGHT? Cut me out and put me in your Bible as a Quiet Time help!

Is there any SIN to avoid?

E

Is there any good EXAMPLE to follow or bad EXAMPLE to avoid?

TUESDAY

As a group, read 1 John 2:7-27 aloud.

Beloved, I am writing you no new commandment, but an old commandment that you had from the beginning. The old commandment is the word that you have heard. 8 At the same time, it is a new commandment that I am writing to you, which is true in him and in you, because the darkness is passing away and the true light is already shining. 9 Whoever says he is in the light and hates his brother is still in darkness. 10 Whoever loves his brother abides in the light, and in him there is no cause for stumbling. 11 But whoever hates his brother is in the darkness and walks in the darkness, and does not know where he is going, because the darkness has blinded his eyes. 7

TUESDAY

I am writing to you, little children, because your sins are forgiven for his name’s sake. 13 I am writing to you, fathers, because you know him who is from the beginning. I am writing to you, young men, because you have overcome the evil one. I write to you, children, because you know the Father. 14 I write to you, fathers, because you know him who is from the beginning. I write to you, young men, because you are strong, and the word of God abides in you, and you have overcome the evil one. 12

Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. 16 For all that is in the world—the desires of the flesh and the desires of the eyes and pride of life—is not from the Father but is from the world. 17 And the world is passing away along with its desires, but whoever does the will of God abides forever. 18 Children, it is the last hour, and as you have heard that antichrist is coming, so now many antichrists have come. Therefore we know that it is the last hour. 19 They went out from us, but they were not of us; for if they had been of us, they would have continued with us. But they went out, that it might become plain that they all are not of us. 20 But you have been anointed by the Holy One, and you all have knowledge.21 I write to you, not because you do not know the truth, but because you know it, and because no lie is of the truth. 22 Who is the liar but he who denies that Jesus is the Christ? This is the antichrist, he who denies the Father and the Son. 23 No one who denies the Son has the Father. Whoever confesses the Son has the Father also. 24 Let what you heard from the beginning abide in you. If what you heard from the beginning abides in you, then you too will abide in the Son and in the Father. 25 And this is the promise that he made to us—eternal life. 26 I write these things to you about those who are trying to deceive you. 27 But the anointing that you received from him abides in you, and you have no need that anyone should teach you. But as his anointing teaches you about everything, and is true, and is no lie—just as it has taught you, abide in him. 15

TUESDAY

TO TUNE OUT

If we cannot tune out the and on what God has called us to, we will miss a large part of what the community of believers is to do. Since the community of believers, the , should be an extension of , we must have an accurate picture of love. We must understand why Christ would willingly sacrifice himself for people who were screaming for His execution. We must understand how much Christ has loved all of mankind that he would die for sins not even committed—for you and me.

When do we find it hardest to tune out?

DEMAS

When do we find it easiest to tune out?

What are some things that we know we need to tune out, but don’t?

Read the story of Demas from Colossians 4:7-8.

Tychicus will tell you all about my activities. He is a beloved brother and faithful minister and fellow servant in the Lord. 8 I have sent him to you for this very purpose, that you may know how we are and that he may encourage your hearts, 7

Demas is described as alongside Luke in ministry.

while working

We don’t hear anything about Demas again until 2 Tim. 4:10a when Paul writes the words, “For Demas, in love with this present world, has deserted me and gone to Thessalonica.” If we neglect to tune out the world on a regular basis, there is a chance that we may begin to . We won’t hear God because we aren’t to what He is saying.

1 John 2:17 gives us the real why—the only why that matters. The world is passing away—it is dying. We must tune out to hear God, that we would do the will of God and have eternity with Him. TO TUNE OUT

As for you, see that what you have heard from the beginning remains in you. If it does, you also will remain in the Son and in the Father. 25 And this is what he promised us—eternal life. 24

1 JOHN 2:24-25 (ESV) In order to effectively tune out, we must begin to

One practical way to tune out is to have a time daily where all electronics . It is then that you can have and have a time of and .

I LOVE SPOKEN WORD POETRY. There is something about the truths found in Scripture turned into a lyrical tongue that just seems right. One of my favorite spoken word poets is David Bowden. In his poem Chew, David says that we have come to “prefer ingestion instead of obsession” when it comes to the Word. What does that even mean? Do you find this true with your life? Do we prefer just to cram the Bible in our metaphorical mouths rather than to #noise15 out and @SBCVirginiaStudentz | @SBCVirginia 29 tune everything meditate and listen?

TUESDAY

There are more things to tune out that may need more of a permanent tune out such as: sinful habits of , , , doing whatever it takes to be liked, etc. These things are the fullness of 1 John 2:15-17. Do you notice sin patterns in your life?

Are you willing to tune out your sin patterns in your life?

Are you willing to do whatever it takes?

Read James 4:1-8.

What causes quarrels and what causes fights among you? Is it not this, that your passions are at war within you? 2 You desire and do not have, so you murder. You covet and cannot obtain, so you fight and quarrel. You do not have, because you do not ask. 3 You ask and do not receive, because you ask wrongly, to spend it on your passions. 4 You adulterous people! Do you not know that friendship with the world is enmity with God? Therefore whoever wishes to be a friend of the world makes himself an enemy of God. 5 Or do you suppose it is to no purpose that the Scripture says, “He yearns jealously over the spirit that he has made to dwell in us”? 6 But he gives more grace. Therefore it says, “God opposes the proud, but gives grace to the humble.” 7 Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. 8 Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded. 1

WEDNESDAY TUESDAY

Read John 10:1-21 slowly and thoughtfully.

Truly, truly, I say to you, he who does not enter the sheepfold by the door but climbs in by another way, that man is a thief and a robber. 2 But he who enters by the door is the shepherd of the sheep. 3 To him the gatekeeper opens. The sheep hear his voice, and he calls his own sheep by name and leads them out. 4 When he has brought out all his own, he goes before them, and the sheep follow him, for they know his voice. 5 A stranger they will not follow, but they will flee from him, for they do not know the voice of strangers.” 6 This figure of speech Jesus used with them, but they did not understand what he was saying to them. 7 So Jesus again said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, I am the door of the sheep. 8 All who came before me are thieves and robbers, but the sheep did not listen to them. 9 I am the door. If anyone enters by me, he will be saved and will go in and out and find pasture. 10 The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have life and have it abundantly. 11 I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep. 12 He who is a hired hand and not a shepherd, who does not own the sheep, sees the wolf coming and leaves the sheep and flees, and the wolf snatches them and scatters them. 13 He flees because he is a hired hand and cares nothing for the sheep. 14 I am the good shepherd. I know my own and my own know me, 15 just as the Father knows me and I know the Father; and I lay down my life for the sheep. 16 And I have other sheep that are not of this fold. I must bring them also, and they will listen to my voice. So there will be one flock, one shepherd. 17 For this reason the Father loves me, because I lay down my life that I may take it up again. 18 No one takes it from me, but I lay it down of my own accord. I have authority to lay it down, and I have authority to take it up again. This charge I have received from my Father.” 19 There was again a division among the Jews because of these words. 20 Many of them said, “He has a demon, and is insane; why listen to him?” 21 Others said, “These are not the words of one who is oppressed by a demon. Can a demon open the eyes of the blind?

WEDNESDAY

We need frankly to face ourselves at this point. We are, perhaps, orthodox evangelicals. We can state the gospel clearly; we can smell unsound doctrine a mile away. If asked how one may know God, we can at once produce the right formula: that we come to know God through Jesus Christ the Lord, in virtue of his cross and mediation, on the basis of his word of promise, by the power of the Holy Spirit, via a personal exercise of faith. Yet the gaiety, goodness, and unfetteredness of spirit which are the marks of those who have known God are rare among us—rarer, perhaps, than they are in some other Christian circles where, by comparison, evangelical truth is less clearly and fully known. Here, too, it would seem that the last may prove to be first, and the first last. A little knowledge of God is worth more than a great deal of knowledge about him. J.I. PACKER, Knowing God What makes reading the Bible difficult?

What can you do to develop the discipline of reading the Bible?

THE VOICE

It is one thing to know God, it is another to remember that He has spoken. The Bible describes the central story of God as “the Gospel.” The word “Gospel” comes from the Greek word euangelion. eu -

God has spoken! We have a speaking God! Think about how amazing that is. Consider this quote from theologian and scholar D.A. Carson: Has God disclosed Himself in words or only in numinous experiences? If he’s disclosed himself in somehow subjective, mystical, numinous experiences that can’t be verbalized accurately then any notion of inerrancy or the like just makes no sense. But if God in his mercy talks to us, if He’s a talking God in our language, despite the fact that he inhabits eternity, [that changes everything.] He speaks to us in Hebrew and in Aramaic and in Greek (the languages of the Biblical periods) D.A. Therefore, knowing the fear of the Lord, we persuade others. But what we are is known to God, and I hope it is known also to your conscience. 12 We are not commending ourselves to you again but giving you cause to boast about us, so that you may be able to answer those who boast about outward appearance and not about what is in the heart. 13 For if we are beside ourselves, it is for God; if we are in our right mind, it is for you. 14 For the love of Christ controls us, because we have concluded this: that one has died for all, therefore all have died; 15 and he died for all, that those who live might no longer live for themselves but for him who for their sake died and was raised. 11

From now on, therefore, we regard no one according to the flesh. Even though we once regarded Christ according to the flesh, we regard him thus no longer. 17 Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come. 18 All this is from God, who through Christ reconciled us to himself and gave us the ministry of reconciliation; 19 that is, in Christ God was reconciling the world to himself, not counting their trespasses against them, and entrusting to us the message of reconciliation. 20 Therefore, we are ambassadors for Christ, God making his appeal through us. We are not commending ourselves to you again but giving you cause to boast about us, so that you may be able to answer those who boast about outward appearance and not about what is in the heart.”

One of three kinds of love will control your actions:

The gospel is concerned with the “heart” of the person, not about merely external appearances. v. 16 The gospel is about the changing of the heart. vv. 16b-17, “Even though we once regarded Christ according to the flesh, we regard him thus no longer. Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come.” (2 Corinthians 5:16-17) The gospel is about the work of God, in Christ, that brings about heart-change v. 18, “All this is from God, who through Christ reconciled us to himself...” Viewing people through the lens of the gospel, means that: a. I by external appearance, but seek to understand the heart. b. I view examples of brokenness (sin) in as opportunities to share Jesus’ offer of reconciliation with God made possible through his substitutionary and resurrection. c. I view heart change as the result of in my life as I initially and continually trust his provision of reconciliation, not a work that earns me salvation.

FRIDAY

Read Hebrews 12:1-3 slowly and thoughtfully.

Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight, and sin which clings so closely, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, 2 looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and cis seated at the right hand of the throne of God. 3 Consider him who endured from sinners such hostility against himself, so that you may not grow weary or fainthearted.

HEBREWS 12:1-3 (ESV) APPLICATION Is there any SIN to avoid?

Is there any PROMISE to claim?

Is there any good EXAMPLE to follow or bad EXAMPLE to avoid?

Is there any COMMAND to obey?

Is there any KNOWLEDGE to remember? (About God or how He works)

What is the APPLICATION for my life?

What are some things that the Lord has taught you at camp? What are some things that you were convicted of?

AFTER CAMP

TO APPLY HEBREWS 12:1-3 TO WHAT WE LEARNED AT CAMP:

“ Lay aside every weight, and sin which clings so closely... ”

CALEB

“ Looking to Jesus, the founder and perfector of our faith... ”

“ Run with endurance the race that is set before us... ”

Review the story of Caleb from Numbers 13-14 & Joshua 14.

What are some spiritual markers in your life - positive or negative?

What are some of those challenges in your life currently?

We must remember to TUNE OUT and LAY DOWN the distractions and sin in our lives and marvel at His love for us, we are then able to focus and LOOK UP and TUNE-IN to Christ, to hear Him, and to follow Him. Once we TUNE-OUT, then TUNE-IN, we are then able to be used by Christ to LIVE STRONG and TRANSMIT His good news of redemption through word and action to the world!
