IMPACT REPORT

BUILDING ON SUCCESS Dear Friends, Last fall, I met a visitor who lamented “There is just so much to see and I don’t have enough time.” This was not the first time I had heard this and I am always happy to encourage another visit. We want visitors to feel they could spend all day and not see everything we have to offer. Reviews of our new Garden spaces have been universally positive. The Island View Garden surrounding the Pritzlaff Conservation Center is appreciated as a space to rival our Redwood Section or the Meadow. I hope both the historic and new areas of the Garden give everyone reasons to come back again and again, and to take their time exploring, relaxing, or just appreciating the native plant landscapes. In addition to new Garden spaces, the Pritzlaff Conservation Center brought expanded capacity for native plant conservation in 2017. Our new lab spaces enabled a significant expansion of our partnerships with federal, state, and nonprofit conservation partners. Increasingly, our partners turn to us to provide botanical expertise on the Channel Islands or the Central Coast. Because of this demand, our conservation staff have grown from four full-time staff at the end of 2016 to six full-time staff at the end of 2017, with another full-time and two parttime staff starting in January 2018! This growth was fueled by projects across the region, from vernal pools in Baja to rare plant work in Monterey County, seed collecting on the Carrizo Plain, and 23 projects on the Channel Islands. We ended 2017 with the Thomas Fire, a disaster which only deepened in 2018. A week after the devastating mudflows, we waived admission fees and offered the Garden as a space for healing and recovery for our community. We continue to work with our regional partners to determine how we can best assist the natural recovery of the habitat impacted by this event, while helping our community heal. With gratitude,

Steve Windhager, Ph.D. Executive Director

PLANTS

CONSERVATION For over 90 years, the Santa Barbara Botanic Garden has been studying, protecting, and promoting California native plants and habitats. Our conservation work is making an impact throughout California’s Central Coast and offshore islands. SANTA BARBARA COUNTY The Garden is plugging knowledge gaps in the botany of Santa Barbara County with its Los Padres Botanical Blackholes project. Work includes surveying back-country locations where no botanical collections have been made to gather specimens for future scientific research and to develop a plant checklist of the County. The surveys document the recovery of the area burned in the Zaca fire, identifying both rare plants and invasive weeds to guide habitat restoration. This project is just getting started with much more to report in the coming year.

CALIFORNIA CHANNEL ISLANDS In 2017 the Garden collaborated extensively with CHANNEL Channel Islands National Park, the U.S. Navy, The Nature Conservancy, Catalina Island Conservancy, and the U.S. Geological Survey to conserve native plant species on the Channel Islands. At press time we had 23 active conservation projects on the islands. The Garden also began to realize our vision to create an accessible database to share data collected on the islands more efficiently by the scientific community. We were excited to receive our first results from a plant genetics project that will help us understand the evolution of island plants and how to best protect them.

MONTEREY COUNTY Jolon Clarkia (Clarkia jolonensis) is a rare plant found only in Monterey County. Most of the historical observations of this plant are over 100 years old. Development and land use change have greatly altered the historic range of the species and the status of the plant in the wild was largely unknown. In 2017, the Garden obtained funding to visit historic locations of Jolon Clarkia and to look for new ones. Using herbarium records and the help of a local expert, we conducted surveys, located four populations of the plant, and collected seed from these populations for conservation efforts. Our results show that it may be more rare than previously thought. Our next step is a conservation plan for this rare native plant. ISLANDS

KERN COUNTY The 2017 "Super Bloom," an unusual spring show of wildflowers made possible by winter rains, sent Garden scientists, staff, and volunteers to the Carrizo Plain National Monument. We collected seeds from 18 populations of 13 common native species for the Bureau of Land Management’s Seeds of Success Program to provide seeds for habitat restoration projects. Over 250,000 seeds were collected and banked. 2017 IMPACT REPORT • 5

SERVING DIVERSE COMMUNITIES

• In 2017 the Garden worked with several groups including Alpha Resource Center, Mountain House, Santa Barbara County Probation adult and juvenile programs, and other local nonprofit organizations bringing individuals to the Garden to learn new skills, discover more about the Garden, and enable them to give back to their community. • A revised visitor map and a Spanish-language version is making it easier for visitors to navigate the Garden, and to focus on our messages. • A new resource booklet, Water Wise Native Plants for Santa Barbara County, was completed in collaboration with the City of Santa Barbara WaterWise program. It is available for free at the Garden, on our web site, and through the City of Santa Barbara. • After a successful spring campaign new wayfinding signs were installed at the Garden to aid navigation and enrich the visitor experience.

CULTIVATING THE NEXT GENERATION

• A new undergraduate apprenticeship program in the genetics lab provides mentorship to five students from three local colleges. • We revived the California Flora course at UC Santa Barbara (both lab and field), a botany course not offered to biology students for over a decade. • Our 125 University of California Naturalists contribute an average of 16,400 service hours annually, impacting over 78,300 people throughout the region, through docent/guide activities. We welcomed 15 new participants in 2017. • The Garden offered 81 classes (increase of 42%) to almost 1300 participants. • The Garden increased its Seasonal Focus Labs for elementary schools from eight to 11, with 357 participants. • A gift of professional quality stereo microscopes is the heart of the Garden’s new Plant Lab – a teaching lab supporting programs for school children, training for staff and volunteers, teacher in-service continuing education, citizen science, and classes in botany and other topics for all ages.
