2016 IMPACT REPORT

SUSTAINABILITY Sustainability achievements include using recycled materials for construction, water efficiency and collection, air quality and comfort using “Earth Tubes,” solar panels, and window innovation to enhance natural lighting while reducing the need for heating or cooling. RESEARCH LABS Our multipurpose labs include a molecular genetics lab with state-of-the-art equipment that allows us to sequence native plant DNA. Other lab activities include examining and identifying collected specimens including insects, soil, plants, and seeds. CLIFTON F. SMITH HERBARIUM The herbarium contains the region’s largest scientific collection of preserved Central Coast plants. Collectively, the specimens document the diversity, ecology, and geography for scientific purposes. SEED BANK The Santa Barbara Botanic Garden’s Conservation Seed Collection stores over 175,000 seeds, composed of 434 collections and 106 taxa. These include state and federally listed species, Bureau of Land Management and U.S. Forest Service sensitive species, and special collections. EXHIBITIONS & EVENTS From connecting science to art, plants to people, and conservation scientists to practitioners, making connections has always been a goal of the Garden. In this new exhibition and event rental space, we are able to bring people together to celebrate art, science, and native plants. Island View Garden photos by Saxon Holt / PhotoBotanic

PEOPLE, PLANTS, AND PLACE Dear Friends, In 2016, we celebrated the 90th Anniversary of the Santa Barbara Botanic Garden with the opening of the Pritzlaff Conservation Center and the surrounding Island View Garden, the Wooded Dell and Children’s Maze - both completed in partnership with the Garden Club of Santa Barbara and the redesigned Water Wise Home Garden. Our year-long celebration concluded with the news that the city would recognize the Garden with the “Water Hero Award.” As I reflect on the achievements of the past year and look toward the future, I am reminded that our work is all about people, plants, and place. The Garden wouldn’t exist without the people who create it, sustain it, and love it. From our donors and members to our volunteers and staff to our visitors from near and far to the school groups and life-long learners who participate in our educational programs – it is people who make our garden grow. Last year, we recognized one of these people – Tom Craveiro – with the Volunteer of the Year Award. As a docent, Garden Grower, teahouse volunteer, trustee, development committee chair, member, and donor, Tom exemplifies all the ways people engage with the Garden. One of the highlights for me in 2016 was the Baja Islands Trip where we collected rare Dudleya, Malva, cactus, Eriogonum, and so many more I lost count! Some of these extraordinary plants are on display in the Island View Garden. Studying plants is endlessly fascinating. One example is the Santa Cruz Island bush mallow, which we helped bring back from near extinction in the wild with the help of our seed bank – yet its reproduction rate on the island is still very low. We have been studying the pollinator networks associated with this plant to understand if low pollinator numbers is what is inhibiting the spread of this species that was once more common on the island. Located in Mission Canyon, nature has given the Garden a head start on place-making. We are blessed to have a stunning setting and sweeping views of mountains, ocean, and the islands. The sense of place at the Garden is palpable. The Garden is California, it is Santa Barbara, and it is the Channel Islands. From deep in the canyon at the historic Mission Dam to high above the city at the Jackson Family Foundation Island View Deck – the Garden contains miles of trails, microclimates leading to diverse gardens, and historic landmarks. All this combined makes the Garden a special place. Together, when we value California’s tremendous biodiversity and embrace the interdependency between people, plants, and place, we grow more than a garden, we grow healthy communities and ecosystems. Thank you for being a part of the Garden family. I hope you will take pride in all that you have helped us accomplish over the past year and enjoy the incredible place we make together. With gratitude,

Steve Windhager, Ph.D. Executive Director

NEW ADDITIONS TO THE GARDEN

Island View Garden The Island View Garden is composed primarily of plants from the California Islands and features stunning views of the Channel Islands themselves. The Garden worked to preserve the historic setting of the garden by restoring the original, crumbling perimeter walls and historic stone stairs that were still present on the site after the Jesusita Fire.

Water Wise Home Garden The Water Wise Home Garden features easy to grow California native plants in a variety of landscape applications: sunny mixed borders, shady understory of a mature oak tree, ground covers, and decorative potted plants.

2

Wooded Dell We took inspiration from the Campbell Trail’s dedication plaque which reads: “A Trail through a Wooded Dell dedicated to Peace and Meditation” when designing the garden. A variety of largeleaved, deciduous trees and shrubs give the space a lush, light-green look that contrasts with the dark green of the surrounding live oak woodland.

Children’s Maze The Children’s Maze was designed by artist and Garden Club of Santa Barbara member, Lenore Hughes using coyote brush. The Maze represents the anchoring element for the future Backcountry Adventure Garden where children will experience and learn about nature in an informal way.
