See what’s happening during the summer of 2016, from a destination cycling tour and the return of PGA Golf to continued development of a National Comedy Center. With four distinct seasons, there are plenty of reasons to bring family and meet friends in Chautauqua County throughout the year.

A Learning Heritage

For over 140 years, Chautauqua County has been the world’s go to destination for vacation learning. It began with the first summer assembly of Chautauqua Institution in 1874 and continues today with spring and fall learning festivals, recreational instruction including golf, sailing, skiing, snowboarding, kayaking, and fly fishing, educational institutions like the Roger Tory Peterson Institute of Natural History and the Robert H. Jackson Center for Justice, workshops at the Audubon Center and Sanctuary, Fenton History Center, Lily Dale Assembly, and annual special studies program at Chautauqua. The list includes camps for children and youth as well as programs for adults with subjects ranging from brewing to robotics. This summer, challenge your mind, body and spirit at Chautauqua Institution during its nine week program from June 25 – August 28, 2016. The season begins featuring conversations on creative expression with Roger Rosenblatt and Friends and concludes with a full week of Wynton

Marsalis and Jazz at Lincoln Center. The summer program at the Lily Dale Assembly runs from June 24 – September 4, 2016 with special guests including Michele Whitedove on July 16 and James VanPraagh on August 6th. Learn about the history of internationally celebrated local heroes like Roger Tory Peterson, one of the world’s leading ornithologists, and Robert H. Jackson, Supreme Court Justice and Chief Prosecutor of the Nuremberg War Trials. Celebrate the creative life and entrepreneurial work of beloved comedienne Lucille Ball, a native of Jamestown, at the Lucille Ball Desi Arnaz Museum and Center for Comedy. In Westfield, discover the world of grapes at the Grape Discovery Center and the story of how Abraham Lincoln came to grow whiskers at the McClurg Museum. In Dunkirk, take in the view from the 61 foot tower at the Historical Lighthouse. The light's 27-mile range makes it one of the most prominent on Lake Erie.

Dunkirk Lighthouse

First established at Point Gratiot on Lake Erie, the Dunkirk Light helped to guide ships to the safety of Dunkirk Harbor. In 1857, it was retrofitted with the current third-order Fresnel lens and lantern imported from Paris, France at a cost of $10,000, and by 1876, a 61-foot stone tower and Victorian style residence were constructed to replace the original tower. Climb these steps for a view of Lake Erie from the observation deck and tour the light keeper’s house and grounds to see an extensive collection of military artifacts. The Lighthouse is open May through October. Look for special events and Ghost Tours.

A Four Season Destination

Take advantage of Chautauqua County’s four distinct seasons to play outdoors

all year long. The region boasts an elevation ranging from 500 to 2000 feet above sea level with rolling Allegheny foothills and five lakes including 50 miles along Lake Erie and western New York’s largest inland lake. Discover magnificent views and undisturbed landscapes while hiking, cycling, birding, horseback riding, snowmobiling and cross country skiing.

Spring and Fall

Spring and fall are peak seasons for fly fishing in Steelhead Alley, the tributary streams that feed Lake Erie. They are also seasons for learning to play golf and practicing on more than twenty courses throughout a region known for the quality of its golf season, access to courses, and reasonable fees. Novices to advanced golfers are readily welcomed at the Chautauqua Golf Club at Chautauqua Institution and the Peak Academy in Findley Lake.

Summer Lakes

Warm summers and five lakes provide plenty of opportunity for fun on the water. Rent a boat. Relax on a beach. Go fishing or kayaking. Take a lesson in sailing. The John R. Turney Sailing Center at Chautauqua Institution offers individual lessons and classes for all ages. In Lakewood, the new Chautauqua Lake Community Sailing Foundation provides coaching, training and instruction in fundamental skills for youth, families and adults. On Lake Erie, Jamestown Community College’s Continuing Education program presents seasonal sailing classes at the Dunkirk Yacht Club.

Winter Snow Sports

With more than 200 inches of average annual lake effect snowfall, Chautauqua’s landscape, well-known for summer fun becomes a winter sports lover’s paradise. Connect with a local snowmobile club to learn about snowmobile safety classes for youth before heading out on more than 400 miles of trails. Skiers and snowboarders will find plenty of expert advice from the instructors at the Peek’n Peak Resort.

Boating

Rumor has it there is no place in Chautauqua County more than twenty-five miles from open water. Along 50-miles of Lake Erie shoreline, windswept shores, sandy beaches and dramatic cliffs form the county’s northern border. At 17.5 miles long and 1308 feet above sea level, Chautauqua Lake occupies the heart of the county. It is said to be one of the highest navigable bodies of water in North America and the largest inland lake in western New York. Several smaller lakes surround Chautauqua, including Findley Lake to the southwest, formed from spring fed ponds that drain into the West Branch of French Creek, and Bear and Cassadaga Lakes to the north. Explore the water on vessels of all sizes from canoes, kayaks and fishing boats to narrated cruises aboard commercial yachts.

fish Inland Lakes

Go fishing on inland lakes including Chautauqua, Findley, Cassadaga and Bear Lakes. Chautauqua Lake offers exceptional fishing for walleye, bass, muskellunge and several species of panfish. The lake is divided into two basins of nearly equal size. The north basin averages 25 feet deep, with a maximum depth of 75 feet. The south basin is considerably shallower, with an average depth of 11 feet and a maximum depth of 19 feet. In southwestern Chautauqua County, Findley Lake’s abundant beds of aquatic vegetation provide angling for a variety of sportfish and panfish. Farther north, the three interconnected lakes of Cassadaga provide angling for largemouth bass, smallmouth bass, northern

pike, muskellunge and several species of panfish with just over five miles of shoreline and a maximum depth of 50 feet. Bear Lake is the smallest of the County’s inland lakes. It formed several thousand years ago when huge blocks of melting glacial ice dotted the landscape, and is known geologically as a kettle lake. Unique among western New York's public lakes, over 70% of the Bear Lake's shoreline is wetland, providing excellent habitat for bass and other predator and prey fish.

Lake Erie Fishing

Deep water fishing takes place on Lake Erie, the eastern basin of which is well-known for trophysize walleye (8-10 lbs). Local tournament winners often exceed 11 lbs. Not as well known, the New York waters of Lake Erie may have the best smallmouth bass fishing in the Northeastern United States. Bass are found along the entire New York shoreline, with hotspots along rocky dropoffs in 15 to 35 feet of water. Anglers can enjoy an early bass season on Lake Erie, which runs from the 1st Saturday in May until the 3rd Saturday in June. During this early season, there is a one fish limit and 20" minimum size requirement.

32| 866.908.ILNY(4569) www.tourchautauqua.com

Fly Fishing

Lake Erie's tributary streams, receive an annual run of migratory rainbow trout called "steelhead." From October through April, thousands of steelhead ascend Cattaraugus, Chautauqua, Canadaway, and 18-Mile Creeks on their mission to spawn. Excellent fly- fishing opportunities await any angler who wishes to try their hand at steelhead fishing. Between the acrobatic leaps, long drag-screaming runs and rod quaking head shakes, the fight of an early run steelhead is a truly exhilarating experience, drawing anglers from across New York, surrounding states, and Canada.

hunt A diverse landscape and abundance of species make Chautauqua County an attractive destination for hunters. The region teams with whitetail deer and draws thousands of hunters each fall for bow, shotgun and muzzleloader seasons. Several area shops specialize in preparing deer for hunters to take home and store. The eastern wild turkey thrives in forested areas throughout the county which for ten years has ranked in the top three counties in New York State for the spring turkey harvest. Check the Hunting Regulations below for specifics on season dates and licenses.

Explore the rolling hills, low lying Great Lakes Plain, and inland shorelines of Chautauqua County on two wheels. Cycling is fast becoming a popular activity in the region from casual rides to destination tours and races like the Chautauqua Gran Fondo event in August that circles Chautauqua Lake, and the Tour D’Vine and Tour Chautauqua rides through the Lake Erie region, America’s grape country. Take a ride from Findley Lake to Panama Rocks or Silver Creek to Cherry Creek and enjoy country roads and idyllic scenery. Routes that climb the Lake Erie escarpment challenge the hardiest cyclists and offer the most rewarding views. For off-road cycling options, try the Rails to Trails system or the Overland Trails. Take the family to Chautauqua Institution, Lake Erie and Long Point State Parks, and Point Gratiot in Dunkirk for little traffic and gentle grades. For more suggestions, go to tourchautauqua.com/cycling to find details on cycling routes recommended by area cycling shops, clubs, and race organizers. Each suggestion includes a summary map and description of the route in a printable PDF format.

What Would You Like to Learn Today?

Take a Sunday morning walk through the vineyards with the winery owner at Johnson Estate and learn about making wine from the vine to the bottle.

America’s Grape Country Delight your senses with America’s native grapes, wineries, farm markets, lighthouses, scenic vistas and historic trails along the Lake Erie shoreline. This is America’s grape country, home to the oldest and largest Concord grape growing region in the world and the largest grape growing region in the United States east of the Rockies. Learn the story of more than 150 years of grape growing at the Grape Discovery Center on Route 20 near Westfield. Sample award winning wines in Lake Erie Wine Country. Plan a visit during one of the wine country’s annual events including a Wine and Chocolate Weekend in February, Wine and Cheese Weekend in May, and Harvest Wine Celebrations in November. Chautauqua County boasts the largest number of farms of any county in New York State primarily due to many small family dairy or grape farms supplemented by meat from livestock operations, tree fruits and vegetables. Winemaker’s, Farm-to-Table, and Beer Pairing Dinners offered at individual

wineries, restaurants, breweries, and the Grape Discovery Center offer unique opportunities to not only enjoy sumptuous meals that are sourced from these local farms but also to learn from the winemakers, brew masters, and chefs how to pair foods and flavors when entertaining and creating your own culinary masterpieces.

Vineyards

For more than 150 years, farmers have been growing grapes in the Lake Erie region where glacial ridges, welldrained gravel-loam soil, and a moderating effect from the great lake on spring and fall temperatures combine to create the perfect growing environment for grapes and fruit trees. From Silver Creek, NY to Harborcreek, PA, over 800 farms cultivate 30,000 vineyard acres. Labruscan grapes, such as Concord and Niagara are grown in most of these vineyards and are used for products sold throughout the US and in more than 35 countries around the world. Look for events at the Grape Discovery Center that highlight the vineyards through the seasons. In the past several decades many of the Concord vineyards have been replanted with premium wine grapes. With a climate and growing environment or “terroir” similar to that of Germany’s Rhine and Moselle River Valleys, Rieslings, Gewürztraminers and premium late harvest and ice wines are regional specialties. Stop at 24 wineries in Lake Erie Wine Country to sample award-winning wines, including native labruscas, French-American and European vinifera, ice wines, fruit and sparkling wines, brandies, and ports. lake erie grape region

Travel along the Lake Erie shoreline in western New York from Silver Creek to the Pennsylvania border and look out over mile upon mile of vineyards. Sharing an area less than six miles wide with three major east/west routes (Routes 5, 20 and Interstate 90), this 50-mile stretch includes beachfront communities, two lighthouses, charming villages, picturesque farms, orchards, produce stands, and 20,000 acres farmed by grape growers. Look out over the Great Lake Erie from the Dunkirk Lighthouse tower next to the water or the Luensman Overlook Park at the top of the escarpment. Both offer spectacular panoramic views. Take a walk or play on one of many beaches and lakeside parks. The sandy beach at Sunset Bay, groomed daily, is one of the area’s hidden treasures and a popular getaway spot. Point Gratiot near Dunkirk is a hotspot for cycling and bird watching. Barcelona Harbor offers the perfect westerly vantage for watching the sun drop below the watery horizon.

Wine Tasting

While the vineyards lie dormant in winter and early spring, grape country is buzzing with activity throughout the year. Visit 24 wineries in Lake Erie Wine Country, open for tastings and special events all year long including Frozen: an Ice Wine Festival in January, Wine and Chocolate Weekend near Valentine’s Day in February, Wine and Cheese Weekend in April and Wine and Art Saturday in May. After harvest season ends, there’s another celebration in November, and from Christmas to New Year’s the wineries put on their finest holiday attire. Also open year ‘round, the Grape Discovery Center in Westfield offers shopping, tastings, and a history lesson of more than 150 years of grape growing in the region. Visit during harvest season to inhale the sweet aroma arising from Concord grapes grown on the patio and in the vineyard next door and celebrate at numerous events featuring locally grown produce, brews, wine and music.

chautauqua lake

At the heart of Chautauqua County lies western New York’s largest inland lake. At 18 miles long, one to three miles wide, and an altitude of 1308 feet, Chautauqua Lake touches several communities from the urban landscape of Jamestown and Lakewood at its southern end to the summer communities of Bemus Point and Stow at its narrow mid-point, and Mayville and Chautauqua, centers of government and learning at its northern tip. The Seneca name “Jad-dah’gwah” is said to describe the shape of the lake, resembling a bag tied in the middle or two moccasins tied together.

Find gift shops, craft stores, and general merchandise while circling Chautauqua Lake. Interstate 86 via the Chautauqua Lake Bridge dissects the lake at its narrow mid-point connecting the communities of Stow and Bemus Point and offering easy access to activities, shopping, and dining on either side. For a more leisurely crossing, the historic Bemus Point-Stow Ferry has been transporting pedestrians, cars, cyclists and even cattle across the narrows for over 200 years.

Chautauqua Lake has been a summer destination for well over a hundred years. Rent a cottage, condominium or vacation home and enjoy the quintessential summer vacation by the lake. From your vacation home, there are plenty of ways to get out on the water and enjoy the attractions around the lake. Take some time to explore Chautauqua Institution celebrating its 142 program season in 2016. Stop in the Chautauqua Bookstore on Bestor Plaza and pick up a “Walking Tour Guidebook of the Chautauqua Institution” for a self-guided exploration of the grounds. Take a ride across the 968 foot narrows of Chautauqua Lake aboard the 204-year-old Bemus Point-Stow Ferry. It runs on weekends. Climb aboard the Chautauqua Belle, an authentic steamboat for a guided tour of the northern basin of Chautauqua Lake, or the Summer Wind, a modern cruise ship that circles the southern basin from Celoron to Long Point State Park. Join Evergreen Outfitters in Mayville for a weekly evening kayaking tour. Once a month, there’s even a Full Moon Paddle on Chautauqua Lake.

Golf at the Peak

Golf at Peek’n Peak Resort began on the Lower Course in 1974. The traditional par-72 course features bent grass fairways lined by mature hardwoods, strategic bunker locations, numerous ponds and a meandering creek. With subtle undulations, it is easy to walk while still providing risk and reward opportunities for golfers of all abilities. In 1993, the first nine holes of the championship caliber Upper Course opened with an additional nine holes developed three years later. Its unique terrain and natural features include rolling hills, deep sand bunkers, panoramic views and mature woods. As host to five annual PGA Nationwide Tour events from 2002-2007, Peek’n Peak Resort has built a renowned reputation for golf. This summer, Peek’n Peak Resort is bringing professional golf back to the Chautauqua region. The PGA’s Web.Com LECOM Health Challenge event will take place July 4-10, 2016 on the challenging Upper Course. Watch the professionals play and play where the pros play this summer at Peek’n Peak Resort.

amish trail

Travel country roads over gently rolling hills along the eastern edge of Chautauqua County extending into neighboring

Cattaraugus County to find New York State’s largest concentration of Amish farms and shops. Accessed through the Villages of Cherry Creek and Randolph, this area is home to one of the largest Old Order Amish communities in the country.

Amish merchants offer their goods from a room in their home or an extra building on the farm. In addition to the Old Order community near Cherry Creek and Randolph, Amish farms can be found in the Findley Lake/Sherman area in the southwestern part of Chautauqua County and the Bear Lake/Stockton area between Mayville, Westfield and Fredonia. Maps to the three Amish areas are available at the Chautauqua Main Gate and I-86 Chautauqua Lake Visitors Centers or online. Plan to visit before sundown and on any day but Sunday. Please note that photographs are forbidden by the Amish.

Amish Made

Drive through the back country roads of Chautauqua County and pass by Amish farms, school houses, and horses working in the field. Farming is the main occupation here with work done using all metal wheeled equipment and horses. Cows are milked by hand, and neighborhood gatherings help with the harvesting while the women on the farm prepare meals. To supplement their income, some Amish have turned to making quilts, wrought iron, furniture, leather and collar goods, windows, steel roofing, and cutting lumber. Stop at the Westfield Farmer’s Market on Saturdays during the summer to find a selection of Amish made baskets and other goods. The Amish Produce Auction operates in Clymer on Tuesdays and Fridays, from April through October.
