Fishing
DEEP WATER ANGLING, TRIBUTARY STREAMS AND INLAND LAKES
Largemouth, smallmouth and black bass fishing is enjoyed by anglers on Lake Erie year-round. The lake’s shoreline between Dunkirk and Irving, NY was named the #3 Best Bass Lake in the Northeastern U.S. by Bassmaster Magazine (September 2022). Bass are found along the entire New York shoreline with hotspots concentrated around rocky drop-offs in 15 to 35 feet of water. The eastern basin of Lake Erie is well-known for trophy-size walleye found in deeper waters.
Lake Erie's tributary streams, collectively known as “Steelhead Alley”, receive an annual run of migratory rainbow trout called "steelhead." From October through April, thousands of steelhead ascend Cattaraugus, Chautauqua, Canadaway, Silver, and Walnut Creeks on their mission to spawn allowing for excellent fly-fishing opportunities.
Among local inland lakes, Chautauqua Lake has exceptional fishing for walleye, bass, muskellunge and several species of panfish. It also ranked #25 Best Bass Lake in the Northeast by Bassmaster (September 2022). Findley Lake’s beds of aquatic vegetation provide habitat for a variety of sportfish and panfish, while the three interconnected lakes of Cassadaga provide angling opportunities for largemouth bass, smallmouth bass, northern pike, muskellunge and panfish. Bear Lake's shoreline is predominantly wetland, providing excellent habitat for bass and other predator and prey fish.

Birdwatching
IN WESTERN NY
Experience birding in the very same landscape that first inspired famed ornithologist, artist, author, and natural historian, Roger Tory Peterson. Thermal currents and flyways along Lake Erie, forested areas, wetlands, and open fields provide ideal conditions for migratory birds and nesting pairs. During the spring and late fall, Chadwick Bay and Barcelona Harbor on Lake Erie and portions of Chautauqua Lake as well as other inland lakes host a variety of species on their brief layover. Spring also brings thousands of hawks, eagles, vultures, and other migrating birds to Ripley. Conservation efforts have proven successful as an increased number of Osprey can be seen in the skies of Chautauqua County. Plan a stop at the Roger Tory Peterson Institute of Natural History in Jamestown to view the changing wildlife art and photography exhibits by both Roger and renowned artists from around the world. Birding resources are available at TourChautauqua.com/ play/birding.

Winter Fun in Western NY
FUN ON THE SLOPES & TRAILS
Chautauqua County receives a large amount of snow each winter due to its proximity to Lake Erie and lake effect storms, reaching over 100 inches annually! Experience Peek’n Peak Ski Resort’s 27 slopes and trails, five progressive terrain parks, and a renowned ski and snowboard school. Their seven-lane tubing arena with “Magic Carpet” lift transforms into a nighttime Lunar Lights Snow Tubing experience, highlighted by thousands of pulsing LED lights synchronized to music.
Visit Cockaigne Resort in Cherry Creek to ride their 10 downhill slopes and trails. Take advantage of convenient access to Chautauqua County’s 400-mile snowmobile trail network as well as a dedicated riding space at the resort. The Snowmobile Adventure Park includes a loop around the 450-acre complex, two uphill trails, a downhill slalom, and an open field dubbed “Powder Peak.” After some outdoor winter fun, warm up and grab a bite to eat at their new lodge and Base Pub restaurant.
The Chautauqua-Lake Erie region’s multi-use trails are popular with cross-country skiers, snowshoers, and fat-tire bikers each winter. Favorites include Long Point State Park on Chautauqua Lake, Lake Erie State Park, Boutwell Hill State Forest, the Eastside and Westside Overland Trails, Chautauqua Institution, and the Jamestown Audubon Community Nature Center.
Explore the Chautauqua-Lake Erie Region by Snowmobile
Over 400 miles of groomed snowmobile trails stretch across Chautauqua County. Ride through rolling foothills, open meadows, and majestic state forests. Trails open after hunting season, if there is adequate snow. Five dedicated local clubs coordinate with private landowners and utilize 16 groomers to maintain safe and smooth riding conditions. Find convenient access to amenities near trailheads including service stations, restaurants and lodging options.
Membership dues assist clubs in properly maintaining trail systems and visitors to the area are encouraged to join. Contact one of the clubs listed to purchase a county-wide trail map or to support efforts to improve snowmobiling conditions for your next snowmobiling trip. Membership in a New York-based snowmobile club will save more than 50% off annual registration costs, which is required to ride anywhere in NYS.
Get updated trail conditions by calling the Snowmobile Hotline at 1-800-2424569 (choose option 2, then option 5) or visit TourChautauqua.com for a link to an interactive trail map.
Trail Maps: The new all-club Snowmobile Clubs of Chautauqua County Trail Map can be purchased for $10 through clubs or Mayville area businesses.

The tradition of golf began in the Chautauqua-Lake Erie region over a century ago, with the development of the golf club at Chautauqua Institution. Today, more than a dozen courses, some of which are four-star rated, and a Learning Center offer numerous choices for hitting the greens during spring, summer, and fall.
Play at the first golf club established in the region, Chautauqua Golf Club. Choose between their Lakes Course or scenic Hill Course, two highly rated 18-hole courses. Tee off with a spectacular view overlooking Chautauqua Lake, near the majestic cliff-lined shores of Lake Erie, or at Peek’n Peak Resort’s challenging Upper Course, which has hosted several professional golf events. Enjoy golf year-round when you visit Mulligan’s on Fairmount, a digital golf facility, or partake in some friendly competition with a round of mini golf at one of the area’s fun courses. See the Golf Chart on page 45 for a full list.
Local courses host a variety of golf tournaments between May and October. Join in on the fun or bring a group and plan your own. Visit TourChautauqua.com/events for more information.

Taste Flavors of the Region
More than 30,000 vineyard acres along a 50-mile trail and over 20 wineries collectively known as Lake Erie Wine Country make up Lake Erie’s Concord Grape Belt. The local wine selection spans the taste palette from dry to sweet, including award-winning dessert and ice wine, pinot noir and grigio, Riesling, port and more.
Tour the original location of Southern Tier Brewing Company, now one of the largest craft-makers in the country. Enjoy a cold one with a beautiful lake view at Ellicottville Brewing Company’s Bemus Point location or grab a pint and dinner from local food trucks while listening to live music at Big Inlet Brewing.
The roots of fresh and local run deep in the Chautauqua County community. Farmers Markets occur in nearly every community during growing and harvest seasons, while a visit to Amish Country features roadside stands that sell bulk spices, baked goods, and produce throughout the countryside. U-pick produce is a fun activity for families. Visit local farms for the chance to pick in-season fruit, squash, and greens.
“The roots of fresh and local run deep in the Chautauqua County community…”
Did You Know?
New York State’s first combined brewery, winery, and distillery at Five & 20 Spirits & Brewing / Mazza Chautauqua Cellars is right here in Chautauqua County! These Westfield brewers pride themselves on working directly with farmers to source the best local agricultural products. Order a pint to enjoy in the tasting room or gorgeous outdoor patio.
1 Chautauqua Inspired Charcuterie
Fill your next charcuterie board with a delicious variety of artisanal meat, cheeses and spreads from the Chautauqua-Lake Erie region. Choose from over 30 kinds of imported and domestic cheeses when you visit to Cadwell’s Cheese House. Pair your cheese board with local wine from Lake Erie Wine Country.
Made in NY
Chautauqua County has seen a rise in farm breweries and distilleries which means a minimum of 75% of product ingredients must come from New York State agricultural products such as grains, honey, fruit, maple syrup and more. Breweries often release small batch brews featuring seasonal flavors during the harvest seasons throughout the year. During summer, visitors can enjoy beers with notes of fruit such as berries, stone fruits and citrus while in fall and winter, local breweries lean into the heavier beers and incorporate notes of warm spices and maple syrup.
2 Grape Discovery Center
Learn the over 150-year history of grape growing in the region and what exactly makes the Lake Erie Concord Grape Belt superior at the Grape Discovery Center. See how grape products transition from vine to table and sample grape juice, wines, and other artisanal grape products. Shop for grape inspired gifts and art, plus bottles of wine.
3 Try Local Sweet Treats
Taste a variety of handmade chocolates sold at local candy shops such as Webb’s Candies. Choose from milk, dark, and white chocolate treats - some with nuts, and some cream or caramel filled. Try goatmilk fudge, pecan turtles, and sponge candy - a regional delicacy.
Visiting a winery or two is the perfect addition to your itinerary no matter if you’re planning a romantic weekend, girlfriend getaway, or a family reunion. The Chautauqua-Lake Erie region possesses optimal growing conditions for American and European varietals making it the perfect location for over 20 unique wineries collectively known as Lake Erie Wine Country. From grape to glass, sample the finished product year-round at wineries, each delivering a unique product and experience.
In addition to tastings, visitors can attend events hosted by members of the wine trail throughout the year. Take a stroll through the rows of grapes during the summer and fall on a vineyard walk, pair your favorite wines from Lake Erie Wine Country with a variety of food including cheese, chocolate, and seasonal dishes. Celebrate the annual grape harvest during the Harvest Celebrations Weekends and the Festival of Grapes. Try Ice Wine, a seasonal specialty created with grapes that were harvested after the first frost which produces a uniquely sweet dessert wine.
Visit TourChautauqua.com/trip-ideas for suggested wine tour itineraries and TourChautauqua.com/events/food-and-drink for winery event details. See a craft beverage trail map on page 51.
The Chautauqua-Lake Erie region is the largest U.S. grapecultivating region east of the Rockies and the largest global Concord growing region. The Lake Erie Concord Grape Belt was carved out by glaciers that left behind rich soil that when combined with the climate moderated by Lake Erie and Allegheny Plateau creates ideal conditions for growing grapes also known as terroir. Grapes harvested here end up on tables all over the world!

Craft Beer and Spirits
Prefer beer and spirits? Plan a craft breweries and distilleries tour on the unofficial “brew and spirits trail” of Chautauqua County.
Big Inlet Brewing, located in Mayville, is a brewery and taproom in a converted hoop barn, with a hayloft that has been transformed into a cozy seating area. Enjoy various food trucks and live music during your visit.
Ellicottville Brewing Company has two locations in the region. EBC West complements its Fredonia college town surroundings, while the Bemus Point outpost offers indoor/outdoor dining on Chautauqua Lake during the summer.
Five & 20 Spirits & Brewing/Mazza Chautauqua Cellars has options for all tastes, whether you prefer wine, beer or spirits!
Southern Tier Brewing Company’s Lakewood location is the original brewhouse and taproom where it all began. Food and beer are served daily, stop in for a flavorful bite and seasonal beers on tap.
Southern Tier Distilling Company creates unparalleled small batch spirits including whiskey, vodka, rum and gin. Visit the Empty Bottle to purchase a bottle or taste one of their handcrafted cocktails.
BIG INLET BREWING is a New York State farm brewery that sources local and regional ingredients for their small batch, handcrafted beer.
Enjoy the converted dairy barn brewery space for weekly live music, and the outdoor fields now repurposed for family-friendly lawn games. Large groups and tour busses are welcome with advance notice. Private parties and events can be held in the newly renovated and spacious taproom or outdoor gathering space. Located at the north end of Chautauqua Lake between the Chautauqua Institution & Midway State Park, Big Inlet Brewing is dedicated to growth through tourism of Chautauqua Co. & WNY.

Where else can you immerse yourself in such a wide breadth of experiences all in one place? Only here! Chautauqua is a pedestrian-friendly community, and you can tour our picturesque grounds and brick walkways that lead you to all the wonders of this magical place. For visitors who only have a day to accomplish as much as possible, here are tips to make the most of a brief experience.
Purchase a Day Pass (or Come on Sunday, When Admission is Free!): Gate passes are available in advance at tickets.chq.org or in person at the Institution’s Main Gate Welcome Center. Use the resources at chq.org to discover art exhibitions, performances, lectures, worship services and readings offered on any given date, as well as other key guest information. Every Sunday, the Institution offers free gate passes, as well as free parking until 2 p.m. And kids under 12 are always free!
Narrated Bus Tour: Purchase tickets for the 75-minute bus tour at the Main Gate Welcome Center daily during the summer. Our tour is accessible for people with disabilities. An experienced guide will tell the fascinating story of Chautauqua Institution, from its founding in 1874 as a place to educate Methodist Sunday School teachers, to the inclusive and dynamic intergenerational community and programming it offers today.
Garden Tour: Chautauqua Institution’s 750-acres of land is an abundance of gardens, all diverse in size, flora and theme. Sign up for a guided nature walk with the Bird, Tree & Garden Club, showcasing multiple landscapes and ecosystems.
Rent a Bike: Grab a map and explore the tranquil grounds by bicycle or utilize shuttle transportation! The use of cars on Chautauqua’s grounds is restricted, which means you can take in our landmarks, beautiful parks, historic homes and inspiring architecture safely and at your own pace. It’s a cyclist’s paradise!
Shop and Eat: Visit a variety of centrally located offerings around Bestor Plaza, the quintessential American town square, including a pair of juried craft fair weekends and a weeklong food festival. The Institution also maintains a museum quality Gallery Store at the Strohl Art Center and popular eateries with lake views.
Stay the Night at the Athenaeum Hotel: Stay overnight at our full-service Victorian hotel, which has been operating continually since it was completed in 1881.
