INLAND LAKES, DEEP WATER ANGLING, AND TRIBUTARY STREAMS Go fishing on inland lakes including chautauqua, Findley, cassadaga and Bear Lakes. Chautauqua Lake, ranked #20 Best Bass Lake in the Northeast by Bassmaster (June 2016), offers exceptional fishing for walleye, bass, muskellunge and several species of panfish. Findley Lake’s abundant beds of aquatic vegetation provide angling for a variety of sportfish and panfish, while the three interconnected lakes of Cassadaga provide angling for largemouth bass, smallmouth bass, northern pike, muskellunge and panfish. The smallest of the county’s inland lakes, known as a kettle lake, Bear Lake's shoreline is predominantly wetland, providing excellent habitat for bass and other predator and prey fish. Named the #3 Best Bass Lake in the US by Bassmaster magazine (June 2016), Lake Erie is the shallowest of the Great Lakes. Bass are found along the entire New York shoreline, with hotspots along rocky drop-offs in 15 to 35 feet of water. Anglers can enjoy an early bass season on Lake erie, which runs from the 1st Saturday in may until the 3rd Saturday in June. The eastern basin of Lake erie is also well-known for trophy-size walleye (8-10 lbs) found in deeper waters with local tournament winners often exceeding 11 lbs. Lake Erie's tributary streams, receive an annual run of migratory rainbow trout called "steelhead." From october through April, thousands of steelhead ascend cattaraugus, chautauqua, canadaway, and 18-mile creeks on their mission to spawn.

EXPLORE WOODS, FIELDS AND TRAILS Proximity to Lake erie and lake effect storms mean snow for chautauqua county, totaling an average of 200 inches annually! For downhill and cross country snow sports, head to Peek’n Peak Resort and enjoy 27 slopes and trails, state-of-the-art snowmaking, eight chairlifts, four progressive terrain parks, and a renowned ski and snowboard school. There’s even a tubing area with seven lanes, and a “magic carpet” lift. cross country skiers and snowshoers will also find opportunities at Long Point State Park, Lake erie State Park, Boutwell Hill State Forest, chautauqua Institution, and the Jamestown Audubon community Nature center. Hundreds of miles of trails groomed by five local clubs provide an ideal setting for snowmobiling over old railroad beds, former trolley lines, open farm fields, heavily wooded areas, and seasonal roads. Snowmobile trails may officially open a week or so before christmas provided the ground is frozen and there is adequate snow.

TOURS AND RACES explore the rolling hills, low lying Great Lakes Plain, and inland shorelines of chautauqua county on two wheels. cycling is fast becoming a popular activity in the region from casual rides to destination tours and races like the Chautauqua Gran Fondo event in August that circles chautauqua Lake, and the Tour D’Vine and Tour Chautauqua rides through the Lake erie region. Take a ride from Findley Lake to Panama Rocks or Silver creek to cherry creek and enjoy country roads and idyllic scenery. Routes that climb the Lake erie escarpment challenge the hardiest cyclists and offer the most rewarding views. For offroad cycling and mountain biking, try the Rails to Trails system, the Overland Trails including the Harris Hill State Forest, or the new mountain trails at Peek’n Peak Resort. chautauqua Institution, Lake erie and Long Point State Parks, and Point Gratiot in Dunkirk offer little traffic and gentle grades for families. For more suggestions, go to tourchautauqua.com/cycling to find details on cycling routes recommended by area cycling shops, clubs, and race organizers. each suggestion includes a summary map and description of the route in a printable PDF format.

Visit family owned farms like Abers Acres in Kennedy and pick-your-own fruit in season. many farms offer a “u-pick” option for strawberries, blueberries, cherries, apples, raspberries, blackberries, and pumpkins. See the Taste Trail for more suggestions or stop at a farm stand and inquire. Plan a weekly trip to a farmers market during growing season to find fresh meats and cheese, homemade jams, jellies, and fudge in addition to seasonal produce. See the calendar of events on page 19 for a schedule of farmers markets in chautauqua county where you might also find pure New York State maple syrup made from the sap of local trees and local honey. At the Sugar Shack in Barcelona, sample 21 flavors of farm-made fruit syrups. Stop at Reverie Creamery on Route 394 in mayville for small batch artisan cheese. For convenience and a taste of the harvest from multiple farms, contact CHQ Local Food and have produce delivered right to your door.

Craft Beer AND SPIRITS

Stop by the continuously growing Southern Tier Brewing Company. The Empty Pint Pub offers a selection of draught beers Wednesday through Saturday evenings and Sunday afternoons with a menu of house-made barbeque pulled pork, chicken and pastrami, specialty sandwiches, tacos, and appetizers. Arrive early on Saturday to take one of the 45 minute afternoon tours of the brewery with a tasting session in the Schalander Tasting Room. Rieslings FROM CONCORDS TO

L3 | Lake Erie/Grape Belt

For more than 150 years, farmers have been growing grapes in the Lake Erie region where glacial ridges, well-drained gravel-loam soil, and a moderating effect from the great lake on spring and fall temperatures combine to create the perfect growing environment for grapes and fruit trees. From Silver Creek, NY to Harborcreek, PA, over 800 farms cultivate 30,000 vineyard acres. Labruscan grapes, such as Concord and Niagara are grown in most of these vineyards and are used for products sold throughout the US and in more than 35 countries around the world. Look for events at the Grape Discovery Center that highlight the vineyards through the seasons. Try your skills at grape stomping during Silver Creek’s 50th annual Festival of Grapes, September 15-17, 2017.

VINEYARDS, BEACHES AND LIGHTHOUSES

Travel along the Lake Erie shoreline in Western New York from Silver Creek to the Pennsylvania border and view mile upon mile of vineyards. Sharing an area less than six miles wide with three major east/west routes (Routes 5, 20 and Interstate 90), this 50-mile stretch includes beachfront communities, two lighthouses, charming villages, picturesque farms, orchards, produce stands, and 20,000 acres farmed by grape growers. Look out over the Great Lake Erie from the Dunkirk

Lighthouse tower next to the water or the Luensman Overlook Park at the top of the Chautauqua Ridge and escarpment. Both offer spectacular panoramic views. Spend the day at a beach or go shopping along the Dunkirk Boardwalk. Plan a trip to the farmers market on Saturday in Fredonia or Westfield.

Open year ‘round, the Grape Discovery Center in Westfield offers shopping, tastings, and a history lesson of more

than 150 years of grape growing in the region. Visit during harvest season to inhale the sweet aroma arising from Concord grapes grown nearby. Enjoy a glass of wine or sample grape juice made with 100% Concord grapes. Taste products made locally like grape jam, Concord grape vinaigrette, grape berry topping, or grape fruit sticks. In the Exhibit Room, discover how grapes are grown through each season.

Sip, swirl and savor regional wines along Lake Erie and a trail comprised of over 23 wineries between Silver Creek, NY and Harborcreek, PA. Lake Erie Wine Country is unique in that it incorporates wineries from two states in a contiguous grape growing region that boasts over 30,000 acres of vineyards and a landscape sprinkled with Victorianera villages and family owned shops and restaurants. While Concords and Labrusca grapes dominate the region, the wine selections span the taste palette from dry to sweet and include award winning dessert, ice and specialty wines. The climate is particularly conducive to Germanic varietals and hybrids. Most wineries are open for tastings year round and several offer seasonal experiences like walking tours, carriage, or sleigh rides through the vineyards, winemaker’s dinners, and annual celebrations like the Strawberry Festival and Septemberfest at Merritt Estate Winery.

Welcome to the Brick House Bed and Breakfast! Relax in nineteenth century elegance with twenty-first century comfort in the heart of the Lake Erie wine and grape region. Explore local shops, restaurants and wineries, or spend the day visiting many area cultural and natural attractions. Open all year.

STAY, SHOP & DINE

Called the Gateway to the West, Mayville grandly overlooks the northern basin of Chautauqua Lake. It was here that early explorers accessed Chautauqua Lake and the Ohio River Valley by portage from Lake Erie at Barcelona. Today, Mayville is the center of Chautauqua’s county government, a popular destination for lakeside dining, a hot spot for summer lake activity and entertainment, and a hub for the snowmobile trail system in winter. Plan to visit for annual celebrations like the President’s Day Weekend Winter Festival, a grand 4th of July parade and fireworks, and summer concerts in the park.

STAY, SHOP, AND DINE

At the heart of Chautauqua County lies Western New York’s largest inland lake. At 18 miles long, one to three miles wide, and an altitude of 1308 feet, Chautauqua Lake touches several communities from the urban landscape of Jamestown and Lakewood at its southern end to the summer communities of Bemus Point and Stow at its narrow mid-point, and Mayville and Chautauqua, centers of government and learning at its northern tip. The Seneca name “Jad-dah’gwah” is said to

describe the shape of the lake, resembling a bag tied in the middle or two moccasins tied together.

Interstate 86 via the Chautauqua Lake Bridge dissects the lake at its narrow mid-point connecting the communities of Stow and Bemus Point and offering easy access to activities, shopping, and dining on either side. For a more leisurely crossing, the historic Bemus Point-Stow Ferry has been transporting pedestrians, cars,

cyclists and even cattle across the narrows for over 200 years. Along the northwestern lakeshore, Chautauqua Institution has been welcoming summer visitors by lake and land since its founding as a vacation learning center in 1874. Visit during Chautauqua’s program season for a unique mix of fine and performing arts, lectures, interfaith worship programs, and recreational activities including golf, tennis, and sailing.

COMEDY, ART, AND HISTORY

Chautauqua County’s urban center lies in the Greater Jamestown area from Falconer to Lakewood. Find shopping and dining in downtown historic Jamestown, at the Chautauqua Mall with several popular chain stores, and along historic Chautauqua Avenue in Lakewood. Just off I-86 at Exit 12, this once industrial hub is transformed with theaters, museums, art and music studios, cafes, restaurants, recreation, and a river walk park anchored by the new National Comedy Center. Designed by Jack

Rouse Associates and the interactive specialist Local Projects, which recently completed work on the 9/11 Memorial Museum, the National Comedy Center will feature the first world-class visitor experience entirely devoted to comedy; both the craft and its contributors.

Throughout the year, performances, sporting events, and festivals draw visitors and residents alike to downtown Jamestown. The Lucille Ball Desi arnaz Museum and Center for Comedy attracts fans from all over

the world while a few blocks down the street, the Northwest arena hosts big name performers, Friday night comedy, and local hockey teams.

A growing Theatre District offers stage and cinematic events held at venues like the Reg Lenna Center for the arts, a beautifully restored vaudeville theater; the Lucille Ball Little Theatre of Jamestown, New York State's largest community theater; and Willow Bay and Spire Theaters.

FOUR SEASONS OF FUN

Renowned as one of the most important streams in eastern North America for its biological diversity, the headwaters of French Creek form in Findley Lake’s rural landscape of farms and undisturbed natural land. Water from Findley Lake flows into the West Branch of French Creek, moving south to Pittsburgh and eventually the Gulf of Mexico.

FOUR SEASONS OF FUN

In the southwest corner of Chautauqua County, the Findley Lake area extends roughly 10 miles from the town of Sherman to the Pennsylvania border. Its proximity to I-86 offers easy access to attractions in Chautauqua County and Lake Erie Wine Country. Visit the picturesque hamlet of Findley Lake on a small lake of the same name with a main street of boutique shops and restaurants. Find access to the lake and a waterwheel overlook in the center of town.

A short drive down the road takes you to Peek’n Peak Resort, a four season destination for golf, snow sports, aerial adventures, mountain biking, archery, pampering at the spa, fine dining, and getaways at an old English Tudor style Inn.

In winter, with some of the greatest snowfall in the county, the Findley Lake and Sherman area becomes Chautauqua County’s primary destination for downhill and cross country

skiing as well as a popular spot for snowmobiling and ice fishing.

A highlight for the community, and the entire county, is the arrival of the LECOM health Challenge. One of twenty-five professional golf tournaments on the Web.com Tour, the 2017 Challenge takes place July 3-9th and is the sophomore edition of the four year partnership with the Chautauqua Region Economic Development Corporation and Peek n’ Peak Resort.

Chautauqua is home to more than 1,500 farms, more than any other county in New York State, as well as a robust Farm to Table movement. While there are many noteworthy restaurants where guests can enjoy meals inspired by locally sourced produce, dairy and meats, the backbone of this movement is the growers themselves. Spend an afternoon picking your own USDA certified organic fruits and produce at Abers Acres farm in Kennedy. At Green Heron Growers Farm Store in Sherman, you’ll find cuts of grass-fed beef, chicken, organic shiitake mushrooms, tart cherry juice and other Green Heron goods. After gathering the staples, visit the award-winning Reverie Creamery in the Mayville Chautauqua area to select the perfect locally made cheese to pair with your fresh, farm foods. AND WESTERN NEW YORK NEIGHBORS

STATE FOREST

Near the Town of Cherry Creek, the Boutwell hill State Forest offers hiking, mountain biking, horseback riding, and hunting on almost 3,000 acres of state-owned forestland. Eight and half miles of the Earl Cardot Eastside Overland Trail pass through this area along with about 6 miles of designated snowmobile and horseback riding trails. The State Forest is also home to the Boutwell Hill Ski Club. The 5 miles of trails groomed by the Ski Club are the only dedicated cross-country ski trails in Chautauqua County, and are free for public use. They are situated on the Chautauqua Ridge, which boasts higher snowfall averages than any other location in Western New York. Maps of all Boutwell Hill State Forest trial systems can be found at tourchautauqua.com

AND WESTERN NEW YORK NEIGHBORS Travel country roads over gently rolling hills along the eastern edge of Chautauqua County extending into neighboring Cattaraugus County to find New York State’s largest concentration of Amish farms and shops. Accessed through the villages of Cherry Creek and Randolph, this area is home to one of the largest Old Order Amish communities in the country and New York’s amish Trail. Farming is the main occupation here with work done using all metal

wheeled equipment and horses. Cows are milked by hand, and neighborhood gatherings help with the harvesting while the women on the farm prepare meals. To supplement their income, some Amish have turned to making quilts, wrought iron, furniture, leather and collar goods, windows, steel roofing, and cutting lumber. Amish merchants offer their goods from a room in their home or an extra building on the farm. In addition to the Old Order community near Cherry

Creek and Randolph, Amish farms can be found in the Findley Lake/Sherman area in the southwestern part of Chautauqua County and the Bear Lake/Stockton area between Mayville, Westfield and Fredonia. Maps to the three Amish areas are available at the Chautauqua Main Gate and I-86 Chautauqua Lake Visitors Centers or online. Plan to visit before sundown and on any day but Sunday. Please note that photographs are forbidden by the Amish.
