Welcome TO CHAUTAUQUA COUNTY

Located in Western New York, Chautauqua County is a year-round destination for adventure, entertainment, the arts, history and leisure learning. A vacation destination for more than 140 years, we know how to have fun and how to keep people coming back again and again. Our beautiful landscape is highlighted by five lakes including the Great Lake Erie and Chautauqua Lake. Water is a commonality shared by many of our world-class attractions. Boating and fishing are popular activities but without the micro climate created by Lake Erie, our notoriety as the second largest grape growing region in the US, with more than 30,000 vineyard acres and 20 wineries, would not be possible.

The allure of the lakes serve as inspiration to our many artists and it once set the stage for Lucille Ball, whose earliest public performances were at the former Celoron Amusement Park on Chautauqua Lake. Today we honor her legacy at the National Comedy Center in Jamestown. The wetlands and migratory flyways that attract a multitude of bird species appealed to a young Roger Tory Peterson, the pre-eminent American naturalist who illustrated and chronicled the natural world to the public in the 20th century. Chautauqua County’s earliest vacationers arrived by steamship to Chautauqua Institution, situated on the northwestern shore of Chautauqua Lake, for a summer experience steeped in education, religion, recreation and the arts. The water is also responsible for our impressive annual snowfall, on average 200 inches of lake effect each season, which allows for downhill and cross country sports, snowmobiling and other winter fun.

AND SNOW

“ Discover magnificent views and undisturbed landscape while hiking, cycling, birding or horseback riding…”

Chautauqua County boasts an elevation ranging from 500 to 2000 feet above sea level, rolling foothills and five lakes, including the Great Lake Erie and Chautauqua Lake. Discover magnificent views and undisturbed landscapes while hiking, cycling, birding or horseback riding the county’s network of multi-use trails and parks. Spring and fall are seasons for fly fishing in Steelhead Alley, the tributary streams that feed Lake Erie. It is also a time to enjoy more than 20 golf courses in a region known for the quality, accessibility and affordability of its golf season. In summer, the lakes provide plenty of opportunity for water fun from boating to beaches. With more than 200 inches of average annual lake effect snowfall, Chautauqua’s landscape transforms to winter lovers paradise. Downhill ski and board Peek’n Peak Resort and Cockaigne Ski Resort, go snow tubing or ride the region’s 400 miles of snowmobile trails. The trail network becomes a sanctuary for cross country ski and snowshoe enthusiasts.

Did You Know… Reputed to be one of the world’s most extensive formations of glacier-cut ocean-quartz conglomerate, this ridge was a hangout for real-life counterfeiters and robbers in the mid-1800s. Guests can search for Panama Pete’s lost treasure, gold robbed from a bank carriage. Read Pete’s letter for clues and begin conducting your own thorough investigation of Panama Rocks Scenic Park.

Five Amazing Lakes

Windswept shores, sandy beaches and dramatic cliffs define Chautauqua County’s northern Lake Erie border. Just a few miles inland at 1308 feet above sea level, Chautauqua Lake is said to be one of the highest navigable bodies of water in North America. Several smaller lakes surround Chautauqua, including Findley Lake to the southwest, formed from spring fed ponds that drain into the West Branch of French Creek, and Bear and Cassadaga Lakes to the north. Explore the water on

Ascend cargo nets and ladders while navigating elements in this tree top adventure. Suited for all ability levels, this 3-hour, selfguided experience allows visitors to explore at their own pace and try any (or all!) of the eight courses. Work through the tree tops, zipline, climb and crawl from platform to platform, encountering more than 60 obstacles along the way.

DEEP WATER ANGLING, TRIBUTARY STREAMS AND INLAND LAKES Named the #3 Best Bass Lake in the Northeastern US by Bassmaster Magazine (July 2018), Lake Erie is the shallowest of the Great Lakes. Bass are found along the entire New York shoreline, with hotspots along rocky drop-offs in 15 to 35 feet of water. Anglers can enjoy an early bass season on Lake Erie, which runs from the 1st Saturday in May until the 3rd Saturday in June. The eastern basin of Lake Erie is also well-known for trophy-size walleye (8-10 lbs) found in deeper waters with local tournament winners often exceeding 11 lbs. Lake Erie's tributary streams, receive an annual run of migratory rainbow trout called "steelhead." From October through April, thousands of steelhead ascend Cattaraugus, Chautauqua, Canadaway, and 18-Mile Creeks on their mission to spawn. For the sportsman, excellent fly-fishing opportunities await. Go fishing on inland lakes including Chautauqua, Findley, Cassadaga and Bear Lakes. Chautauqua Lake, ranked #23 Best Bass Lake in the Northeast by Bassmaster (July 2018), offers exceptional fishing for walleye, bass, muskellunge and several species of panfish. Findley Lake’s abundant beds of aquatic vegetation provide angling for a variety of sportfish and panfish, while the three interconnected lakes of Cassadaga provide angling for largemouth bass, smallmouth bass, northern pike, muskellunge and panfish. The smallest of the County’s inland lakes, known as a kettle lake, Bear Lake's shoreline is predominantly wetland, providing excellent habitat for bass and other predator and prey fish.

For downhill and cross country snow sports, head to Peek’n Peak Resort and enjoy 27 slopes and trails, state-of-the-art snowmaking, eight chairlifts, four progressive terrain parks, and a renowned ski and snowboard school. There’s even a tubing area with seven lanes and a “Magic Carpet” lift. Cockaigne Ski Resort is looking forward to opening their ski slopes and lifts for the 2019-2020 winter season. Hundreds of miles of snowmobile trails groomed by five local clubs provide an ideal setting for snowmobiling over old railroad beds, former trolley lines, open farm fields, heavily wooded areas, and seasonal roads. Snowmobile trails may officially open a week or so before Christmas provided the ground is frozen and there is adequate snow.

CYCLING TOURS AND RACES Explore the rolling hills of Amish Country, low lying Great Lakes Plain, and inland shorelines of Chautauqua County on two wheels. Cycling is fast becoming a popular activity in the region from casual rides to destination tours and races like the Chautauqua Gran Fondo event in August that circles Chautauqua Lake, and the Tour D’Vine and Tour of Chautauqua rides through the Lake Erie region. Take a ride from Findley Lake to Panama Rocks or Silver Creek to Cherry Creek and enjoy country roads and idyllic scenery. Routes that climb the Lake Erie escarpment challenge the hardiest cyclists and offer the most rewarding views. For off-road cycling and mountain biking try the Rails to Trails system or the Overland Trails including Harris Hill Extension and State Forest. Chautauqua Institution, Lake Erie and Long Point State Parks, and Point Gratiot in Dunkirk offer little traffic and gentle grades for families. Visit tourchautauqua.com for details and maps on scenic cycling routes recommended by area cycling shops, clubs, and race organizers.

Mountain biking is a growing pastime and Chautauqua County has some of the best single track and fat tire trails in Western New York. Harris Hill Extension in Gerry, home of the annual Harris Hill Hustle, features over 17 miles of single track trails including a skills loop. Both the Westside and Eastside Overland Trails and Long Point State Park on Chautauqua Lake are popular destinations for riders of all abilities. Loud Performance Products, located near the park, offers rentals and weekly social rides, a perfect opportunity for visitors to immerse themselves in the local culture. Long Point hosts the annual King/Queen of the Point race series, which is open to multiple age and skill classes. Event dates, area trail condition information and maps can be found by contacting the Western New York Mountain Bike Association (WNYMBA.)

Breathtaking Beauty

Leave your high tech gadgets at home to cycle, paddle or hike the region’s pastoral countryside, miles of shoreline and wooded trails, or set off on a sightseeing adventure to enhance your Instagram feed. Visit tourchautauqua.com for a host of trip planning resources including cycling route maps, scenic overlook videos, and a list of the 25 Most Instagrammable Spots in all of Chautauqua County. Here are a few #TourChautauqua sights you won’t want to miss:

1. Located in Dunkirk, Point Gratiot Park offers beautiful views of the Lake Erie Shoreline and is a perfect stopping point for a picnic and photos. Use your lens to capture the angle of the shoreline and play with the exposure to master the texture of the waves as they break on the beach. 2. Perhaps one of the most distinguishable sights in the region, Barcelona Lighthouse and the adjacent beach features a pebbled shoreline and the country’s first natural gas lighthouse, complete with a pier reaching out to Lake Erie. Choose a day with sheer cloud coverage and a stunning sunset to capture how the sun’s rays play off of Lake Erie

40| 866.908.ILNY(4569) www.tourchautauqua.com

in a smattering of bright colors, it will be the epitome of #summer in Chautauqua County. 3. The stunning 70-acre Luensman Overview Park near Brocton provides a vista of Lake Erie and the surrounding Lake Erie Wine Country. Put your panoramic skills to the test to see if you can capture the full view for your #picoftheday. 4. Head over to the Greater Jamestown Riverwalk to capture the newest addition to the city’s landscape: the twin industrial bridges over the Chadakoin River. Put your subject in the middle of one of the bridges for a lovely image driven by architectural lines. Or, stand on the shore to get a great shot of both of the bridges and the National Comedy Center as the backdrop. 5. Long Point State Park (pictured here) is always hopping in the summer. You’ll find boaters tied up in a #floatila in the bay and picnickers grilling all along the point. But for the best picture, head to the end of the Point Trail for those gorgeous portrait shots. One of the best #sunset spots on the lake, the tip of Long Point is sure to garner gorgeous views.

Natural Elements

Experience Chautauqua County through the eyes and expertise of a local by signing up for a guided tour of the region’s natural world. The Chautauqua Watershed Conservancy maintains several preserves that are open to the public year round. Guided tours communicate the need to protect vital habitats for native plants and wildlife, and to preserve the ecological function of our watershed. Evergreen Outfitters hosts weekly paddle tours of Chautauqua Lake and the Chadakoin River Outlet each summer. Guests are welcome to bring their own kayak or rent one. The Roger Tory Peterson Institute of Natural History (RTPI) continues Roger’s conservation mission by organizing learning opportunities in the area. Become a citizen scientist, Project Wild America Youth Ambassador or attend a River Walk Tour with the RTPI’s President, Twan Leenders. GRAPES, WINE & BEER

Delight your senses in America’s Grape Country, the world’s largest and oldest Concord grape growing region. The 150 year old story of grape harvesting is told at the Grape Discovery Center in Westfield. Headquarters of the National Grape Cooperative Association are located in the area as are facilities that process grapes destined for food products on every continent.

“ Facilities that process grapes destined for food products on every continent are located in Chautauqua County”

While Labrusca grapes like Concord and Niagara dominate the region, French-American and European varietals perfect for fine wines also thrive here. Sample the local flavor at Lake Erie Wine Country’s more than 20 wineries. Plan a visit during annual events including Wine and Chocolate, Wine and Cheese, Charming Wine, or Harvest Wine Celebration Weekends. Chautauqua County boasts many small family dairy farms, livestock operations and vegetable growers. Winemaker’s, Farm-to-Table, and Beer Pairing Dinners offer unique opportunities to not only enjoy sumptuous meals that are sourced from these local farms, but also to learn from the winemakers, brewers, and chefs how to pair foods and flavors when entertaining and creating your own culinary masterpieces.

Farm and Public Markets can be found all across the Chautauqua-Lake Erie Region. They are great places to shop local and organic produce, protein sources, flowers plus artisanal food products and handmade goods. See page 46 to find a market near you.

Play with Food

Source your own food at an edible vegetation foraging or shiitake mushroom growing workshop at Green Heron Growers. Hickory Hurst’s fourth-generation family farm will teach you to master the art of caring for edible flowers or growing vegetables in a 5-gallon bucket. A brisk morning walk with Fred Johnson of Johnson Estate Winery, New York’s oldest estate winery, is the perfect opportunity to ask questions about the care and keeping of vineyards and the winemaking process. The 3rd Annual Food Festival at Chautauqua Institution returns during Week 9. Enjoy delicious food & beverages and sign up for culinary workshops with top experts. Learn more at tourchautauqua.com.

The Lake Erie Concord Grape Belt was designated a New York State Heritage Area in 2006. The Discovery Center is a place to promote the grape industry through sharing stories and engaging, educating and informing the public about all things grape!

A JUICY HISTORY

All wines start with grapes and all grapes start with “terroir,” or the dirt and climate in which the grapes are grown. The Lake Erie Concord Grape Belt was carved out by glaciers that left behind ideal soil for the fruit. Lake Erie and the Allegheny Plateau moderate the climate and make it possible to grow grapes here; a tradition that began in the 1870’s when the Concord grape was introduced to Western New York. Today, many North American and European varietals populate our vineyards but cultivating the Concord is how the local grape industry began.

D8 | Lake Erie/Grape Belt

Dr. Thomas Bramwell Welch set up his first plant in Westfield back in 1897, five years after his non-alcoholic pasteurized Welch’s Grape Juice became America’s favorite at the 1893 World’s Fair in Chicago. Today the National Grape Cooperative, comprised of 1,000 farmers, owns the Welch’s brand and they maintain a presence in Westfield. Their products are sold in approximately 40 countries around the globe so there is a good chance the grapes you pass growing along Lake Erie in Chautauqua County will end up at a breakfast table oceans away.

In 2004 the Concord Grape Belt Heritage Association was formed with the mission of supporting the local grape and wine industries. The Grape Discovery Center opened in May 2013 as a showcase for local grape-related products and as a venue for sharing the rich history and culture of the region, which is the largest US grape growing area east of the Rockies. Visitors are invited to stop in, sample and shop for local grape products, and learn more about our interesting history!

AND LIGHTHOUSES

“ Visit during the harvest season to inhale the sweet aroma arising from nearby vineyards.”

Fifty miles of Lake Erie shoreline comprises Chautauqua County’s northwestern border. This area features beachfront communities, two Seaway Trail lighthouses, shop-lined Victorian villages, farms and produce stands, and over 20,000 acres of grape vineyards. Lookout over the Great Lake from the Sunset Bay Breakwall or Luensman Overview Park, one of the highest elevation points in Chautauqua County. On a clear day it’s possible to see Canada across the otherwise seemingly endless horizon. Open year-round, the Grape Discovery Center in Westfield offers a history lesson detailing a more than 150 year old grape growing tradition. Visit during the harvest season to inhale the sweet aroma arising from nearby vineyards. Enjoy a glass of local wine or sample Concord grape juice. Taste products made locally like grape jam, vinaigrettes, grape berry topping and even grape popcorn. Purchase Lake Erie Wine Country wines and grape-inspired gifts to share with friends back home.

52| 866.908.ILNY(4569) www.tourchautauqua.com

Did You Know… The Lake Erie Grape Belt is the largest grape growing region outside of California, with some 20,000 acres of vineyards, major processing plants and the headquarters of the National Grape Cooperative Association (which owns Welch's Foods). Labrusca grapes like Concord and Niagara dominate the region but French-American and European wine grape varieties that are made into fine wines are also common.

Dunkirk Pier & Boardwalk Market

The Boardwalk Market and Dunkirk Pier is one of the most unique destinations in not just Chautauqua County, but all of New York State. The beauty of Lake Erie should not be underappreciated! Grab a meal or ice cream at the Boardwalk Market before browsing the shops for unique treasures. Enjoy great music on the Dunkirk Pier all summer long, from country bands to cover bands.

Sip, swirl and savor the taste of the region at the more than 20 Lake Erie Wine Country wineries. Year-round events like vineyard walks, dinners, wine and cheese or wine and chocolate weekends offer multiple reasons to return.

Adventurous travelers will enjoy the climb to the observation tower to behold the expansive view of the Great Lake Erie. Regular daily tours of the lighthouse keeper’s home offer a glimpse at life in a bygone era. The light is operational today but technology has rid the need for an onsite keeper.

The Great Lakes Offshore Grand Prix is anticipated to return in summer 2019. This free and family-friendly event features multi-million dollar speedboat races with multiple vantage points from shore. Additionally, every year on the Fourth of July the City of Dunkirk puts on a huge fireworks display, lighting up the Dunkirk Harbor.

Beaches, including a few sandy ones, and a stretching horizon might fool you into thinking you’re at the ocean. Check out our parks and beaches chart on page 43 to help you pick the perfect spot.

CANDLELIGHT LODGE in the Town of Westfield is one of the region’s best kept secrets. The beach is wide with rocks and sand, perfect for walking, looking for beach glass, unique driftwood, or enjoying a lakeside campfire where permissible. The water is good for fishing, kayaking and canoeing. There are no lifeguards here but picnic tables, free parking, a pier, several restaurants and a boat launch make it a bustling destination. Visit the information center at the Barcelona Lighthouse, one of the oldest lighthouses on the Great Lakes and the first to be powered by natural gas. Barcelona also offers the perfect westerly vantage point for watching the sun drop below the watery horizon.

Go birdwatching in the landscape that first inspired renowned ornithologist, artist, author and natural historian, Roger Tory Peterson. Thermal currents and flyways along Lake Erie, heavily forested areas, protected wetlands and open fields provide ideal conditions for migratory birds and nesting pairs. The Audubon Community Nature Center in Jamestown offers multiple habitats for wildlife viewing and you can always count on seeing Liberty, a Bald Eagle under the center’s permanent care due to a wing injury. During the spring and late fall, Chadwick Bay and Barcelona Harbor on Lake Erie and portions of Chautauqua Lake and other inland lakes host a variety of species on their brief layover. Plan a stop at the Roger Tory Peterson Institute of Natural History in Jamestown to view the changing wildlife art and photography exhibits by both Roger and artists from around the world. Birding resources are available at tourchautauqua.com.

Charter Fishing LAKE ERIE

New York’s stretch of Lake Erie was recognized as a 2018 Top 3 Bass Fishing Lake in all of northeastern US, an accolade not unfamiliar to the region. Anglers of all levels, from pros to weekend hobbyists, travel here for some of the best smallmouth and largemouth bass, trophy-sized walleye, and lake trout fishing the country has to offer. Lake Erie is also known for its quickly changing conditions and waves capable of reaching monster status due to its expansive surface, but relatively shallow depths. Lean on the expertise of area sport fishing guides on your next fishing trip. Many charter captains have years of experience and are happy to share the wisdom that just may help land your next trophy. Visit page 31 for a list of Lake Erie fishing charters.

AROUND THE LAKE

“ The lakeshore is dotted with summer communities ....hotspots for lakeside dining, shopping and summer entertainment.”

At the heart of Chautauqua County lies Chautauqua Lake, one of Western New York’s largest inland lakes at 18 miles long two miles at its widest. The lakeshore is dotted with summer communities including Bemus Point and Mayville, both hot spots for lakeside dining, shopping and summer entertainment. Chautauqua Institution, located on the northwestern shore, has made the area a vacation destination since 1874. Their program season offers a unique mix of fine and performing arts, lectures, interfaith worship and recreational activities like golf, tennis and sailing. The lake itself is a destination for multi-season recreation including boating, fishing, and kayaking. Paddle down the Chadakoin River outlet all the way to Jamestown, observing lush banks teeming with wildlife along the way. Several marinas offer boat and kayak rentals but there are other ways to enjoy the beauty of the water like hiking at Long Point State Park, camping lakeside, or visiting municipal parks and beaches.

A family tradition since 1898, Midway is one of the oldest continually operating amusement parks in the US. Take a nostalgic ride on a Herschell carousel, a mid-century roller coaster or play classic midway games.

What’s So Funny?

Learn and laugh as Chautauqua Institution again partners with the National Comedy Center for a week exploring how comedy changes us and, in turn, society. • What does your sense of humor reveal about you? How can we be challenged by things we don’t find funny? • We look at the potential of comedy — particularly political comedy — to change minds and influence decision-making. • Examine the complicated intersection of free speech, political correctness, humor, and what we can learn from that uncomfortable space. Learn more at CHQ.org

Circle Chautauqua Lake to find causal and fine dining opportunities throughout its towns and villages. Many offer boat slips to those traveling via watercraft and nearly all offer spectacular sunset views when the conditions are right.

No gate fee and free parking until 2pm every Sunday at Chautauqua Institution. Attend the afternoon program at the Amphitheater, the morning interfaith worship and other on-grounds events like Art in the Park and more.

Wine Tour

Sip, swirl and savor regional wines in Lake Erie Wine Country. More than 20 wineries and 30,000 vineyard acres lie between Silver Creek, NY and Harborcreek, PA, making it the second largest grape growing region in the United States. Wineries are open for tours and tastings year round and several offer seasonal experiences such as vineyard walks, sleigh rides, winemaker’s dinners and annual celebrations like America’s Grape Country Wine Festival, Silver Creek Festival of Grapes, Harvest Wine Weekends and Wine and Chocolate Weekend. Look for events happening at the Grape Discovery Center or stop by any day to tour the exhibits, learn about the science of growing grapes and sample local grape products.

Lure of the Lake MUSKY FISHING

Chautauqua Lake is recognized as a premiere, worldclass muskellunge fishery, with many fish in the 40-50 inch class caught each year. Anglers employ a number of productive tactics when chasing Chautauqua's top predator. Better catch numbers tend to come from shallower areas along weed edges, where trolling or drifting and castings are both effective methods. Trollers also see good action for larger, suspended musky caught over depths of 25-35 feet, in the north basin. Chautauqua's musky population is supported by an annual stocking of 13,000 fall fingerlings (8.5 to 9 inches), by the DEC Chautauqua Hatchery at Prendergast Point. A minimum size limit of 40 inches and a daily limit of one fish have been set to help maintain the high quality muskellunge fishing. Anglers are encouraged to release their catch without even bringing the fish into the boat. When muskellunge are handled carefully, the odds of surviving to be caught again are excellent.

SERVING

Craft Beer & Spirits In an area that has been a long time praised for its grape vineyards and award-winning wineries, craft breweries and distilleries have begun to not only take hold, but grow throughout Chautauqua County. The new kid on the block is Mayville’s Big Inlet Brewing. Formerly a working farm, the barn has been fully converted into a small batch microbrewery with farm-related décor that produces high-quality beers and cider.

After more than 40 years in wine making business, the Mazza family opened Five & 20 Spirits & Brewing/Mazza Chautauqua Cellars in Westfield. As New York’s first combined brewery, winery and distillery, they have a strong commitment to creating small batch craft beverages and partnering with local agricultural producers to ensure ingredients are grown as close to home as possible. Southern Tier Brewing Company, one of the largest craft brewers in the game, got its start right here in Chautauqua County. Visit their Empty Pint Tasting Room and Pub at their flagship Lakewood brewery to sample your favorite STBC brands and tuck into house-made comfort foods. Tours are offered every Saturday on a first come, first serves basis. Afterwards hang out in the Brewhouse Tasting Room overlooking the beautiful state-ofthe-art facility. Before leaving, journey down the hill to visit their sister distillery, Southern Tier Distilling Company. Ask for a flight or have the bartenders shake up a creative craft cocktail features STDC’s award-winning spirits.

AND LAKEWOOD

CHAUTAUQUA’S URBAN CENTER

“ ... a storied Industrial past but today it's where the story of comedy lives.”

The Greater Jamestown area, which stretches from Falconer to Lakewood, has a storied industrial past but today it’s where the story of comedy lives, at the new National Comedy Center. A growing Theater District offers stage and cinematic events held at venues like the Reg Lenna Center for the Arts, a beautifully restored vaudeville theater; the Lucille Ball Little Theatre of Jamestown, New York State’s largest community theater; and Willow Bay and Spire Theater. Year-round entertainment, sporting events, art galleries, recreation and festivals draw visitors and residents alike to Downtown Jamestown.

The Lucille Ball – Desi Arnaz Museum attracts fans from all over the world while a few blocks down the street, the Northwest Arena hosts big name performers, standupcomedy and the Rebels, Jamestown’s NAHL junior hockey team. Find shopping and dining options in Downtown Jamestown, along historic Chautauqua Avenue in Lakewood, and at the Chautauqua Mall with several popular chain stores.

Jamestown may be Chautauqua County’s urban center, but ample green space provides a multitude of opportunities to enjoy the outdoors. If fact, the City’s department of Parks, Recreation and Conservation alone manages 500 acres of parkland and an urban forest of more than 10,000 trees. At the heart of downtown lies Comedy Center Park, named for its proximity to the National Comedy Center. It’s part of the Greater Jamestown RiverWalk and open to the public. Leave your vehicle at Panzarella Park and use the two footbridges that cross the Chadakoin River or take the underpass from the National Comedy Center’s public plaza. An information kiosk provides a map of the entire multi-mile RiverWalk urban trail system, perfect for riding bicycles, rollerblading and jogging. McCrea Point Park & Boatlanding, another RiverWalk destination, is usually abuzz with activity. Launch your boat or kayak, fish off the wooden boardwalks, or let the kids explore the playground which features a steamship inspired jungle gym, a nod to when this location was a dock for ships that would take Victorian era travelers to Chautauqua Institution and the wooden hotels that once populated Chautauqua Lake’s shoreline. Bergman and Allen Parks are home to summer events and festivals such as Fitness in the Parks, bandshell concert performances, and the annual Labor Day Festival. College Park, locally known as the 100 Acre Lot, is located across the street from the Roger Tory Peterson Institute of Natural History. In fact, these woods instilled an appreciation of the natural world in a school-aged Roger. The trails here are well-worn and easily passable, making it a popular destination for families with small children and dog walkers. The Audubon Community Nature Center, a 600-acre wetland preserve that includes over five miles of trails, a native tree arboretum, natural play space, and educational gardens is located at the outskirts of the City. Visit Liberty, a non-releasable Bald Eagle, in her enclosure near the Nature Center building. The Nature Center itself is home to three floors of interactive exhibits, including live animals, which engage visitors of all ages.

AND HISTORY LESSONS

Join the Fenton History Center for guided walk around town and learn about Jamestown’s history. Walking Tours of Jamestown are held each Saturday from June through September. Each week is one of four tours which are rotated throughout the season and include Jamestown’ Southside and “Old Northside” neighborhoods, Lakeview Avenue, the Riverwalk and Downtown Churches. Tours begin at 1pm, last about 2 hours and cost $10. The Fenton History Center hosts “Saints & Sinners” tours of Jamestown’s Lakeview Cemetery near All Hallows Eve. Uncover some of the over 43,000 personal stories hidden within the cemetery. A “Mausoleum Tours & More” event features actors dressed in Victorian garb who tell spirited tales of those laid to rest on the grounds. Festival Fredonia hosts similar tours in the Lake Erie Region.

AND AMISH COUNTRY

AND NEW YORK’S AMISH TRAIL

Farming is the main occupation but some Amish have turned to making quilts, wrought iron, furniture, leather goods, and steel roofing.

Findley Lake is never out of season. The picturesque hamlet is nestled on a small lake of the same name with a main street of boutique shops. A short drive takes you to Peek’n Peak Resort, a destination for golf, snow sports, aerial adventures and getaways at an old English Tudor style Inn. The farmlands in the surrounding rolling countryside are home to the local Old Order Amish communities. Farming is the main occupation but some Amish have turned to making quilts, wrought iron, furniture, leather goods, and steel roofing. Charming Cherry Creek lies at the heart of Amish Country and offers year-round recreation including snowmobiling and a newly expanded equestrian trail network. The friendly town is especially lively during the week of the Fourth of July, when multiple days of celebration attract people from all over. Winter enthusiasts can anticipate hitting the slopes at Cockaigne Ski Resort during the 2019/2020 season.

Escape to beautiful surroundings at Peek’n Peak Resort. Enjoy amenities, recreational activities and restaurants that you would expect to find at any premier resort in the country. The Upper Golf Course is home to the LECOM Health Challenge, a PGA Web.com Tournament, which takes place July 1-7, 2019.

Happy Heron

A summer tradition since 1992, the Great Blue Heron Music Festival is an annual celebration that brings thousands of music lovers to the rolling hills of Sherman, NY each July. A wide variety of live original music on three stages, instruments workshops, dance lessons, youth and family activities keep fans coming back year after year. Camp out among the breezy fields and shady woods that grace the property, an organic produce and livestock farm called Green Heron Growers. Two other festivals, The Great Rhythm Revival and Night Lights at the Heron also take place each summer on the festival grounds.

Amish merchants offer their quality goods from a room in their home or an extra building on the farm. Maps of the three predominant Amish areas within Chautauqua County are available at Chautauqua Institution’s Main Gate, the I-86 Chautauqua Lake Visitors Centers or at tourchautauqua.com.

Did You Know… Alexander Findley, a War of 1812 veteran and Northern Ireland immigrant, created Findley Lake with the development of a dam and sawmill in 1815. Findley Lake is part of French Creek, one of the most bio-diversified creeks east of the Mississippi River. Boating, excellent fishing and other watersports are mainstay activities. Today the Marion Labar Walford Water Wheel Overlook is a unique visitor center to honor the history of Alexander Findley’s original dam and mill.

Take an hour to hike, snowshoe or cross country ski the loop trail that follows a variety of habitats along French Creek. The trail winds through floodplain, mixed hardwood forests and along a creek bluff. Enjoy more than 90 acres teeming with wildlife including migratory birds.

Findley Lake and Cherry Creek are hubs for winter fun. Both receive their fair share of lake effect snow, in fact Peek’n Peak Resort named their newest dining establishment, Bistro 210, after their average annual accumulation of 210 inches. Nearby Pine Junction is where the snowmobilers gather. Its secluded location, inviting outdoor fire pit and places to store gear while enjoying dinner make the restaurant popular with riders. Travel to the opposite end of Chautauqua County’s 400 miles of snowmobile trails to visit the Trillium Lodge and neighboring Cockaigne Ski Resort in Cherry Creek. Cockaigne is anticipated to be fully operational under new ownership for the winter 19-20 ski season.
