Welcome to chautauqua county

Take a deep breath, open arms wide, and embrace the fresh air in Chautauqua County. Five amazing lakes, including Lake Erie and Chautauqua Lake, have drawn visitors for generations. The lakes are a source of endless fun; enjoy boating, fishing, swimming, lakeside dining, festivals, and entertainment. Camp, book a cottage, rent a vacation home, or stay in a grand hotel. The region’s earliest vacationers were motivated to visit Chautauqua Institution, a National Historic District Campus on Chautauqua Lake. It continues to be a summer experience steeped in education, recreation, and the arts, nearly 150 years later. The surrounding landscape is populated with tributaries, hiking trails, and agricultural scenes. This same terrain once inspired a young Roger Tory Peterson, the early 20th-century artist who made the natural world accessible to the public through guidebooks. See Peterson’s original work on display at the Roger Tory Peterson Institute of Natural History. Several unique experiences and attractions await visitors including, three New York State Parks, Lake Erie Wine Country, Lily Dale Assembly, the Lucille Ball-Desi Arnaz Museum, the National Comedy Center, and more. The National Comedy Center tells the story of comedy in America through highly engaging exhibits. Realizing the vision of comedy legend, television pioneer, and hometown hero, Lucille Ball, the National Comedy Center has been recognized as not just an amazing new attraction, but a benchmark for modern museums, and one of the “World’s Greatest Places” by TIME Magazine. Winter visitors delight in the transformation from summer playground to winter wonderland. Two hundred inches of annual snowfall make for awesome downhill skiing and snowboarding at Peek’n Peak Resort and Cockaigne Resort. Ride more than 400 miles of snowmobile trails or explore cross-country snow sports trails. What an exciting time to be planning a vacation to the Chautauqua-Lake Erie Region in western New York. Let this official Chautauqua County Travel Guide be your go-to source for information on attractions, dining, lodging, shopping, and events. Visit TourChautauqua.com for even more trip-planning tools and don’t forget to follow @TourChautauqua on social media and tag us in your #TourChautauqua photos.

“ Experience the

performing arts and LIVE entertainment at unique venues.”

Chautauqua County has been a vacation destination since 1874 when Chautauqua Institution was founded, but the importance of the region dates further back. Spend a day touring local museums and history centers; glimpse how Victorian-eratravelers experienced Chautauqua Lake at the Fenton History Center, visit the McClurg Museum – a Federal-style mansion home to the Chautauqua County Historical Society, or get hands-on learning about antique boats and motors at the Lawson Boating Heritage Center. Art and history collide at the Roger Tory Peterson Institute of Natural History. Peterson made the natural world publicly accessible through his illustrations and guidebooks. A visual arts community thrives throughout the region, where gallery events, juried art shows, and festivals are organized year-round. Experience the performing arts and LIVE entertainment at unique venues ranging from lake cruises, lakeside parks, the open-air Chautauqua Amphitheater, Northwest Arena, and historic vaudeville theaters including the Reg Lenna Center for the Arts and 1891 Fredonia Opera House.

“ …diverse mix

of year-round recreation like hiking, biking, horseback riding, and snow sports...”

Chautauqua County’s geography is defined by five lakes including, Lake Erie, Chautauqua Lake, Findley Lake, Cassadaga Lakes, and Bear Lake. The lakes themselves are destinations for boating, sailing, swimming, and fishing. The surrounding landscape is varied in its topography and foundational to the diverse mix of year-round recreation like hiking, biking, horseback riding, and snow sports supported here. Spring and fall are seasons for fly fishing Steelhead Alley, the tributary streams that feed Lake Erie. It’s also the perfect time to enjoy more than a dozen golf courses in a region known for the quality and affordability of its golf courses. With more than 200 inches of average annual snowfall, the Chautauqua-Lake Erie Region transforms into a winter wonderland. Get to Peek’n Peak Resort and Cockaigne Resort for downhill sports. Try Lunar Lights Snow Tubing at Peek’n Peak, a mesmerizing nighttime light show set to popular music. Ride the region’s more than 400 miles of groomed snowmobile trails or the new Snowmobile Adventure Park at Cockaigne.

Did You Know? There is Lost Treasure at Panama Rocks - Reputed to be one of the world’s most extensive formations of glacier-cut, oceanquartz conglomerate, this ridge was a hangout for counterfeiters and robbers in the mid-1800s. Hunt for Panama Pete’s lost treasure - gold robbed from a bank carriage. Read Pete’s letters for clues and conduct a thorough investigation of Panama Rocks Scenic Park.

Experience Life on the Lake Rent a power or pontoon boat or trailer your own to take advantage of convenient access to Chautauqua County’s many lakes and all the fun the “lake life” has to offer. Float all day at Long Point State Park on Chautauqua Lake, or cruise Chautauqua’s 17 miles and discover public docking points in Mayville, Bemus Point, Lakewood, and Celoron. Anchor near municipal parks or the floating stages on both Chautauqua and Cassadaga Lakes for LIVE music. Boat, tube, and waterski across picturesque Findley Lake, where a summer highlight is the annual Fourth of July boat parade.

Take a scenic tour from Barcelona Harbor all the way up to Sunset Bay State Marine Park, appreciating the beauty of Lake Erie’s rugged shale shoreline. Stop to explore the Dunkirk Pier and Boardwalk Market, or nearby Dunkirk Lighthouse. Charter a fishing boat for a Great Lakes fishing experience. Cast a line for walleye, largemouth bass, northern pike, and more. Connection to the water runs deep here; there isn’t a single town across the entire Chautauqua-Lake Erie Region that is more than 20 minutes from open water.

Must Do Peek’n Peak Hike or Bike 1 2 Mountain Adventure Local Trails

Guided Kayak 3 Excursions

Suited for most ability levels, this 3-hour, self-guided experience allows visitors to explore at their own pace and try any (or all!) of the eight courses. Ascend cargo nets and ladders, work through the treetops, zipline, climb and crawl from platform to platform, encountering more than 60 obstacles along the way.

Evergreen Outfitters hosts regular kayak tours of local waterways including, the Chadakoin River, Chautauqua Lake, and Lake Erie. One of the most popular is the full moon paddle when familiar waters become something other. Each event is an opportunity to learn about local ecology and wildlife. Bring your equipment or rent theirs.

There are dozens of miles of trails to explore throughout Chautauqua County. (Trails Chart, pg. 39.) Explore them on foot, two wheels, snowshoes, or cross-country skis. Equipment rentals are available at Evergreen Outfitters, Jamestown Cycle Shop, Hollyloft Ski & Bike, and Loud Performance Products.

Deep water angling, tributary streams and inland lakes Lake Erie’s shoreline between Dunkirk and Irving, NY was named the #3 Best Bass Lake in the Northeastern U.S. by Bassmaster Magazine (July 2019). Bass are found along the entire New York shoreline with hotspots concentrating around rocky dropoffs in 15 to 35 feet of water. Anglers can enjoy an early bass season on Lake Erie, which runs from the 1st Saturday in May until the 3rd Saturday in June. The eastern basin of Lake Erie is well-known for trophy-size walleye (8-10 lbs) found in deeper waters. Tournament winners often exceed 11 lbs! Lake Erie’s tributary streams receive an annual run of migratory rainbow trout called “steelhead.” From October through April, thousands of steelhead ascend Cattaraugus, Chautauqua, Canadaway, Silver, and Walnut Creeks on their mission to spawn. Excellent fly-fishing opportunities await. Among local inland lakes, Chautauqua Lake has exceptional fishing for walleye, bass, muskellunge and several species of panfish. It also ranked #23 Best Bass Lake in the Northeast by Bassmaster (July 2019). Findley Lake’s beds of aquatic vegetation provide habitat for a variety of sportfish and panfish, while the three interconnected lakes of Cassadaga provide angling opportunities for largemouth bass, smallmouth bass, northern pike, muskellunge and panfish. Bear Lake’s shoreline is predominantly wetland, providing excellent habitat for bass and other predator and prey fish.

Hunting Turkey, Deer and Game A diverse landscape and abundance of species make Chautauqua County an attractive destination for hunters. The region teams with whitetail deer and draws thousands of hunters each fall for bow, shotgun, and muzzleloader seasons. The eastern wild turkey thrives in forested areas throughout the county, which consistently ranks in the top three counties in New York State for the spring turkey harvest. Peek’n Peak Ski Resort has 27 slopes and trails, four progressive terrain parks, and a renowned ski and snowboard school. The tubing arena transforms into a nighttime Lunar Lights Snow Tubing experience, highlighted by pulsing LED lights synchronized to music. Cockaigne offers convenient access to Chautauqua County’s 400-mile snowmobile trail network and dedicated riding space at the resort. The new Snowmobile Adventure Park is a ticketed feature that includes a loop around the 450-acre complex, two uphill trails, a downhill slalom, and an open field dubbed “Powder Peak.” Cross-country skiers, snowshoers, and fat-tire bikers will also find opportunities on the Chautauqua-Lake Erie Region’s multi-use trail systems including, Long Point State Park on Chautauqua Lake, Lake Erie State Park, Boutwell Hill State Forest, the Eastside and Westside Overland Trails, Chautauqua Institution, and the Jamestown Audubon Community Nature Center.

More than 400 Miles of snowmobile trails

Ride rolling foothills, open meadows, and majestic state forests. Trails open after hunting season if there is adequate snow, generally the last week of December to mid-March. Five dedicated local clubs coordinate with private landowners and utilize 16 groomers to maintain safe and smooth riding conditions on more than 400 miles of trails throughout the region. Along the trailheads, service stations, restaurants, and lodging partners provide convenient access to amenities. Clubs rely on membership dues to properly maintain trail systems and visitors to the area are encouraged to join. Contact one of the clubs listed on page 45 to purchase a county-wide trail map or to support efforts to improve snowmobiling conditions for your next snowmobiling trip. “ The emphasis

on small-batch, fresh, and local is strong in Chautauqua County.”

The emphasis on small-batch, fresh, and local is strong in Chautauqua County. Farmers Markets crop up in nearly every community during growing and harvest seasons, while Amish stands sell bulk spices, baked goods, and produce throughout the bucolic countryside. U-pick produce is a fun family tradition. Visit Aber’s Acres, Meadows Apple Farm, or Olde Chautauqua Farm for in-season berries, apples, stone fruits, squash, and greens. Pair your handpicked haul with artisanal cheese from Cadwell’s Cheese House or Reverie Creamery. Delight in the variety of handmade chocolates sold at Webb’s Candies, Peterson’s Candies, and Valvo’s Candies; curate a box with milk, dark, and white chocolate treats some with nuts, and some cream or caramel filled. Try goatmilk fudge, pecan turtles, and sponge candy - a regional delicacy. Chautauqua County is the largest U.S. grape-cultivating region east of the Rockies and the largest global Concord growing region. Grapes harvested here end up on tables all over the world! Tour Lake Erie Wine Country’s more than 20 wineries plus area craft beer and distilled spirits makers.

Craft Beer and Spirits Craft breweries and distilleries continue to grow throughout Chautauqua County. Plan a tour during a festival, as an après ski activity, or just for fun. 7 Sins Brewing Company is located within Sensory Winery in Ripley and doubles as an art gallery. Order a pint at the source or visit their Westfield brewpub, Grace & Abe’s, to tuck into wood-fired pizzas. Big Inlet Brewing in Mayville is a popular food truck stop and LIVE music is a regular occurrence. The brewery and taproom are in a converted hoop barn, and the hayloft has been transformed into a cozy seating area. Ellicottville Brewing Company has two Chautauqua County locations. EBC West’s unique charm complements its Fredonia college town surroundings, while the Bemus Point outpost offers superb indoor/outdoor dining and sunset views over Chautauqua Lake. “ …quaint harbor

towns, beaches, art galleries, shop-lined Victorian villages, produce stands, vineyards, and more than 20 wineries…”

Fifty miles of Lake Erie shoreline constitutes Chautauqua County’s northwestern border. Tucked in among the region’s shale escarpment are harbors towns, beaches, art galleries, shop-lined Victorian villages, vineyards, and more than 20 wineries known collectively as Lake Erie Wine Country. Appreciate Lake Erie vistas from the Sunset Bay Breakwall, Dunkirk Breakwall, or Luensman Overview Park - one of the highest elevation points in Chautauqua County. Adventurous travelers will enjoy the climb to the top of the Dunkirk Lighthouse observation tower after touring the keeper’s house and the adjacent military museum. The light is still functional, but modern technology has released the keeper from his duties. Lake Erie State Park is a true gem, with camping facilities, cabin rentals, disc golf, playgrounds, and hiking trails that support wintertime cross-country skiing. The Barcelona Lighthouse State Park became the U.S.’s First Natural Gas Lighthouse in 1829. The keeper’s cottage features exhibits chronicling both lighthouse and local history. Travel by boat or by land to discover an abundance of things to do, places to eat, and experiences to be had along Chautauqua’s Lake Erie shoreline.

Did You Know… All wine starts with grapes, and all grapes start with terroir, the dirt and climate in which grapes are grown. The Lake Erie Concord Grape Belt was carved out by glaciers that left behind ideal soil for the fruit. Lake Erie and the Allegheny Plateau further moderate the climate, making this a highly successful growing region. Cultivating the Concord is how Chautauqua’s grape industry began in the 1870s and today ranks as the largest Concord grape-growing region in the world!

Lake Erie Charter and Fly Fishing Anglers from all over travel to Chautauqua County for access to Lake Erie’s eastern basin, home to some of the best small and largemouth bass, trophy-sized walleye, and trout fishing the country has to offer. Lake Erie is the shallowest of the Great Lakes, making for quickly changing conditions. Lean on the expertise of area sport fishing guides, many of whom have years of experience and are happy to share the wisdom that could help land

your catch of a lifetime. Lake Erie’s tributary streams receive an annual run of migratory rainbow trout called “steelhead.” From October through April, this area transforms into the renowned Steelhead Alley, as thousands of trout ascend Cattaraugus, Chautauqua, Canadaway, Silver, and Walnut Creeks on their mission to spawn. Visit page 32 for a list of fishing charters and guides.

Must Do

1 Visit a Winery There are more than 20 wineries in Lake Erie Wine County; make it a priority to visit at least one during your upcoming vacation. Sip wine while amongst the vineyards or in handsome tasting rooms. Wine tasting is also a perfect rainy day or winter activity.

Dunkirk Pier and Hunt for Beach Glass 2 3 Boardwalk Market Order an ice cream cone then browse shops for special treasures at the Boardwalk Market. The Dunkirk Pier is the place to be on Thursday nights all summer long; enjoy cover, country, and rock bands, plus favorite vendors.

The rocky beaches at Barcelona Harbor and Point Gratiot Park are popular spots to gather Lake Erie beach glass. Search for a variety of colors including, white, green, cobalt, pink, orange, and red. Store them in a jar or get crafty and transform them into jewelry and art.

Lake Erie Beaches Sunset Bay Beach Club near Silver Creek is one of Western New York’s favorite beaches. The wide, sandy shoreline and shallow water is an ideal spot for families looking for a place to go swim or build sandcastles. Adjacent to the beach, Cabana Sam’s Beach Bar & Grill provides an outside deck and inside dining room. Point Gratiot Park in Dunkirk is a hotspot for cycling, birdwatching, tennis, and life-guarded swimming. There are picnic facilities and a playground, making it a popular gathering spot. Wright Park Beach, another Dunkirk location, has a splash pad that’s a hit on hot days. Plus, there are volleyball and pickleball courts for those with a competitive streak. High bluffs provide a breathtaking view at Lake Erie State Park, where visitors can also enjoy the conveniences of picnic areas, playgrounds, cabin rentals, a disc golf course, and hiking trails. Barcelona Harbor in the Town of Westfield is one of the region’s best-kept secrets. The beach is wide with rocks and sand, perfect for walking, looking for beach glass, unique driftwood, or enjoying a sunset lakeside campfire. The water is good for fishing, kayaking, and canoeing. There are no lifeguards here but picnic tables, free parking, a pier, several restaurants, and boat launch make it a bustling destination. Visit the information center at the Barcelona Lighthouse, one of the oldest lighthouses on the Great Lakes and the first U.S. lighthouse to be powered by natural gas. During times of regular rainfall, look for Barcelona Falls, an 18-foot tall waterfall east of Dan Reid Pier.

“ …hot spots

for dining, shopping, entertainment, nightlife, and festivals.”

Chautauqua Lake lies at the heart of Chautauqua County. It’s a year-round destination for outdoor fun like boating and fishing. Launch a canoe, kayak, or stand-up paddleboard at McCrea Point Park and paddle the Chadakoin River Outlet, observing wildlife along the lush banks or birdwatching. There are many ways to enjoy the beauty of the water including, narrated boat cruises, dining lakeside, hiking and mountain biking at Long Point State Park, campgrounds, playgrounds, municipal parks, and beaches. Much of the lakeshore is charmingly undeveloped, with private residences and vacation homes interspersed among a handful of towns. Bemus Point and Mayville are both hot spots for lakefront dining, shopping, entertainment, nightlife, and festivals. Chautauqua Institution is a 750-acre lakeside community that captivates guests with a unique mix of visual and performing arts, author readings, workshops on food, music, photography, and more each summer. Participate in recreational activities including, golf, tennis, yoga, and sailing. Catch a nationally touring music act, worship service, or current events lecture at the open-air Chautauqua Amphitheater.

Thousands vacation here annually, many of whom visit attractions or summer camps their great-great ancestors attended. Chautauqua County first became a vacation destination in 1874, the year Chautauqua Institution was founded. Lily Dale Assembly opened its gates just five years later. Before touring Panama Rocks Scenic Park or Midway State Park, try searching the Chautauqua Institution Archives for photos of Victorian era travelers at these same locations. Chautauqua County has seen the recent development of attractions that will continue to push the boundaries of time such as the National Comedy Center, Lucille Ball-Desi Arnaz Museum, Roger Tory Peterson Institute of Natural History, and more.

3 Lakeside Dining Chautauqua Lake’s town and villages feature a variety of lakeside and outdoor dining. Some restaurants have boat slips for patrons traveling via watercraft, and nearly all offer spectacular sunset views when the conditions are right. Refer to the restaurant chart on pages 88-89.

THE

Lure of the Lake Musky fishing

Chautauqua Lake supports a diverse sport fishery, with angling for walleye, muskellunge, largemouth bass, smallmouth bass, and several species of panfish. Its waters consistently rank among the top bass lakes in New York State by Bassmaster Magazine. The shallow, weedy areas and docks offer exceptional cover for largemouth bass and boaters and shore anglers do best by waiting to ambush prey. Although less abundant, smallmouth bass can offer good action for those fishing the right spots. Walleye are highly prized and moderately abundant in the lake. Early-season anglers catch walleye from dusk through dawn along Chautauqua Lake’s gravel shoals by casting or trolling minnow-imitating lures. Chautauqua Lake is also a popular “hard water” fishing destination, with anglers seeking walleye and a variety of panfish from the lake’s frozen depths. Chautauqua Lake is recognized as a world-class muskellunge fishery, with many fish in the 4050-inch class caught each year. Better catch numbers tend to come from shallower areas along weed edges, where trolling or drifting and castings are both effective methods. Chautauqua’s musky population is supported by annual stocking of 13,000 fall fingerlings (8.5 to 9 inches), by the DEC Chautauqua Hatchery at Prendergast Point. For current fishing information visit the Lake Erie Fishing Hotline on the DEC’s website or call 716-855-3474.

Jamestown & Lakewood

Walking Tours and History Lessons Join the Fenton History Center for guided walks around town and learn about Jamestown’s history every Saturday, June through September. Themes rotate weekly and include Jamestown’s Southside and “Old Northside” neighborhoods, Lakeview Avenue, the Riverwalk and Downtown Churches. Roger Tory Peterson Institute of Natural History offers both gallery and architecture tours, while the Robert H. Jackson Center gives in-depth docent tours, recounting the life and impact of U.S. Supreme Court Justice, Robert H. Jackson. During the autumn season, both the Fenton History Center and Festivals Fredonia schedule cemetery tours that communicate local history and lore through period-dressed actors. It’s a fun way to uncover some of the thousands of personal stories laid to rest in the Lakeview (Jamestown) and Forest Hill (Fredonia) Cemeteries. The Dunkirk Lighthouse & Veterans Park Museum hosts public group paranormal tours of the grounds several times throughout the year, but private group tours are also available. Does the paranormal activity stem from the memories of past lighthouse keepers? Or the artifacts related to the five branches of the U.S. military?

Jamestown/Lakewood

McCrea Point Park McCrea Point Park was once the primary gateway to Chautauqua Lake. Victorian travelers would arrive in Jamestown by rail, then journey via steamboat to wooden hotels and Chautauqua Institution. Transportation has changed, but McCrea Point remains significant as Chautauqua Lake’s southernmost public boat and kayak launch, a destination for shore fishing, picnics, rowing and a whimsical steamboat playground. The Chautauqua Belle makes round-trip passenger excursions from McCrea Point to the Chautauqua Harbor Hotel during May, June, September, and October. Across the Chadakoin River, at the Eighth Street Jamestown RiverWalk entrance, is Breakwater, a public playspace, and architectural statement.

Connect over dinner and drinks at one of Jamestown’s many local establishments. Officially open as of July 2019, Jamestown Brewing Company is the new brew in town. The menu is a meat-lovers dream with local-inspired favorites like beef on weck sandwiches, a bacon flight, and wild game burgers being served alongside vegetarian options. Enjoy an after-dinner digestif at Forte the Restaurant, a Jamestown hotspot known for its eclectic fusion cuisine, sushi rolls, and creative cocktails. Or go to Brazil Craft Beer and Wine Lounge, where 18 rotating taps, 100-plus bottles of craft beer, and more than 40 unique bottles of wine mean something new for every palate. Grab a board game and find an alcove to recount the day’s adventures. For more Jamestown restaurants, see the Restaurant Chart on pages 88-89.

“ …multiple

Findley Lake is never out of season. The picturesque hamlet is nestled on a small lake of the same name and features multiple lakefront vacation rental properties, boutique shopping, and regular events. A short drive takes you to Peek’n Peak Resort, a destination for golf, downhill and cross-county snow sports, Peek’n Peak Mountain Adventures, plus overnight getaways, spa treatments, and dining at the classic Tudor-style hotel. Cherry Creek offers year-round fun for horseback riding via the Chautauqua County Equestrian Trail System, plus superb singletrack mountain biking and fat-tire biking at Harris Hill State Forest. Snowsports enthusiasts will find thrills at Cockaigne Resort’s downhill slopes and new Snowmobile Adventure Park. Connect to Chautauqua County’s 400-mile snowmobile trail network or ski groomed cross-country trails in Boutwell Hill State Forest. Cherry Creek is especially lively during its annual Independence Day Celebration; multiple days of festivities draw visitors with classic entertainment including, pie contests, a parade, a car and motorcycle cruise-in, LIVE music, and fireworks.

Must Do Year-Round Pool Complex & 1 Play Zone at Peek’n Peak The outdoor pool features a splash pad, waterslide, Cabana Bar, plus DJs and contests on select dates. The indoor pool and indoor/outdoor hot tub are open year-round. A Play Zone features a playground, basketball court, and pickleball courts.

Did You Know… The surrounding countryside is home to local Amish communities. Farming is the primary occupation, but some Amish merchants sell quilts, rugs, furniture, leather goods, bulk spices, plus baked goods and homegrown produce. Bring cash and expect shops to be closed on Sundays. You can also find many Amish tradespeople at community farm markets throughout the Chautauqua-Lake Erie Region.

Live Music and Festivals 2 at Cockaigne Resort In addition to the new lodge and Base Pub restaurant, Cockaigne Resort built a 3,000 sq. ft, professional outdoor stage. Its location at the bottom of the ski slope offers a great vantage point for the entire audience! Discover upcoming events at TourChautauqua.com.

Water Wheel Overlook 3 and Anchor

Happy Heron A summer tradition since 1992, the Great Blue Heron Music Festival is an annual celebration that brings thousands of music lovers to the rolling hills of Sherman, NY each July. A wide variety of live original music on three stages, instruments workshops, dance lessons, plus youth and family activities keep fans coming back year after year. Camp out among the breezy fields and shady woods that grace the property, an organic produce and livestock farm called Green Heron Growers. Two other festivals, The Great Rhythm Revival and Night Lights at the Heron also take place each summer on the grounds.

Visit downtown Findley Lake to witness two historical points of interest; the Water Wheel Overlook represents Findley Lake’s past as a dam-powered sawmill – Findley Lake is manmade, and the Mautenee Anchor is an artifact from a nearby Lake Erie shipwreck dating back to 1905, off the coast of Ripley, NY.

Our Western New York Neighbors One of New York’s most visited sites is just two hours north of Chautauqua County, Niagara Falls. With 400 acres of natural landscape and wildlife, Niagara Falls State Park is open 24-hours a day, 365 days a year. Visit the City of Buffalo on the way, perhaps spending an afternoon touring their Buffalo Wing Trail. Just east of Chautauqua County sits Allegany State Park, New York’s largest. Explore paved and natural trails while hiking, cycling, horseback riding, cross country skiing and snowmobiling throughout 65,000 acres of mixed hemlock/hardwood forests with rolling hills, meadows, ponds and two lakes. The Seneca-Iroquois National Museum is housed in the new Deyonöhsagwë:de’ Cultural Center in Salamanca. The Living Culture Village gives visitors an in-depth look at the traditional history of the Haudenosaunee people, with emphasis on the Seneca people. Visit Western New York’s must-see artistic and architectural gems. America’s oldest sculpture park, Griffis Sculpture Park, is located just outside of Ellicottville and features 50 monumental steel sculptures dispersed over miles of hiking trails. Two estates designed by Frank Lloyd Wright for Isabelle and Darwin D. Martin are nearby. Graycliff estate is located on a bluff overlooking Lake Erie just south of Buffalo and the Martin House Complex is in the city itself. Architectural details include classic Wright features like cantilevered balconies, graceful terraces and “ribbons” of windows. Sign up for a historic architecture tour of Buffalo or, if time is short, head to City Hall and awe at the resplendent Art Deco details.
