South Buffalo: A Historical Perspective South Buffalo is a neighborhood that makes up the southern third of the City of Buffalo. Traditionally known for its large Irish-American community, it also has a strong presence of various other nationalities. This once heavily industrialized area of Buffalo was home to vibrant manufacturers and a strong economic and employment base that supported middle-class families. With the decline of manufacturing, South Buffalo experienced problems like economic hardship, population decline and urban blight, similar to most blue collar communities throughout the region.

Due to loyal generations of tight-knit families, strong community leadership and a more recent focus on quality of life matters, waterfront redevelopment and the revitalization of South Buffalo’s commercial strips, the community is seeing a significant resurgence.

CEPSB Supports South Buffalo’s High Quality Education and Quality of Life In response to strong community concern related to the sustainability of Catholic education and healthcare institutions throughout Western New York, the Catholic Education Partners of South Buffalo (CEPSB) was formed. CEPSB is a unique private-public partnership united in providing excellence in education from pre-school through college and career while supporting the quality of life in the South Buffalo community and promoting it as one of the best areas of the city to live, work and raise a family.

The overarching objective of CEPSB is to promote the high quality of education and career offerings from kindergarten through college and career at South Buffalo’s academic and healthcare institutions in order to help retain and attract students and their families, which in turn will strengthen the South Buffalo community as a whole.

High Quality Education and Employment from Pre-K through College and Career South Buffalo has various educational and career offerings, but it is traditionally and most significantly tied to its Catholic education and healthcare institutions that make up CEPSB and include Notre Dame Academy, Mount Mercy Academy, Bishop Timon-St. Jude, Trocaire College and Mercy Hospital. These long standing institutions helped build South Buffalo into the community it is today and are vital to the sustainability of the community’s future.
